The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated prospects and mineralized areas in and adjacent to the Indian Pass and Picacho Peak study areas in 1983 and 1984. The Indian Pass study area contains 33,640 acres and the Picacho Peak study area contains 5,450 acres. The study areas are located in the southeast corner of California and are underlain by Precambrian gneiss, Pre-Tertiary metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, and Tertiary volcanic and non-marine clastic rocks. Low-grade gold-silver resources may be present in hydrothermally altered gneiss in the upper plate and altered schist in the lower plate of the Chocolate Mountain thrust fault. The thrust fault is exposed in the study areas for about 3.5 miles west and 5 miles east of Indian Pass. Mineralized zones in the thrust plates were not discovered until 1983. Earlier prospecting explored areas containing minor copper carbonate occurrences in schist and sedimentary and volcanic rocks that are younger than the thrust. Twenty-three mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences inside the study areas and fourteen outs; de were examined for this study. These surficial copper occurrences have been prospected extensively in the study areas; large areas have been scraped, pitted, and trenched by bulldozers. However, they appear to be of limited economic significance. Slightly mineralized zones are in the northwest part of the Indian Pass study area where granite contacts sedimentary and volcanic rocks.

The Florida phosphate industry, which supplies about three-quarters of the domestic phosphate fertilizer, produces tremendous volumes of phosphatic clay wastes (slimes). These clays retain a high percentage of water for extended periods of time. The clays also pose an environmental hazard because the disposal technique involves aboveground storage behind earthen dams. Although much research has been undertaken by numerous organizations to dewater slime, no completely satisfactory solution has been developed. In June 1972, a cooperative effort by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Florida phosphate mining industry was initiated to develop a solution for dewatering the Florida phosphatic slimes. This report discusses various aspects of the slimes problem, reviews past research, makes recommendations for future research, and includes a bibliography of references and patents dealing with the subject.

According to Lindgren , the economic importance of pegmatites stems from the fact that they represent the principal natural storehouse of two classes of mineral products : (1 ) common minerals in exceptional size and purity and ( 2 ) several of the rarest minerals , which are not commercially available from other types of deposits . Most pegmatites can be described simply as coarse- to very coarsegrained granites . Pegmatite includes coarse -textured igneous rocks of any composition , such as syenitic , alkali syenitic , dioritic , or gabbroitic ; but basic pegmatites are far less common than those that are associated with acid rocks and correspond approximately to the mineral composition of ordinary granite . Moreover , only a very few basic pegmatites can be considered as economic sources of useful minerals . Whereas , in ordinary granitic rocks the individual minerals usually measure 1/8 to 1/4 inch across , in pegmatites they are characteristically over 1 inch and often more than 12 inches in diameter . Although some of the constituents of the pegmatite may be only a fraction of an inch in length , single crystals more than 10 feet long are by no means unusual , and some crystals are enormous . A whole quarry was operated in the Urals within a single crystal of feldspar . Huge quartz crystals are quite common although usually imperfect . Muscovite plates 10 feet in diameter have been mined in India , and the Purdy mica mine in Canada contained a mica crystal measuring 6.5 by 9.5 feet and weighing nearly 7 tons , which supplied more than $20,000 worth of trimmed mica sheet . A loglike crystal of spodumene in the Etta mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota was 42 feet long . Giant crystals of beryl weighing several tons apiece have been mined from several properties . Because so many rare minerals are found in substantial concentration only in pegmatites , it is a common fallacy to suppose that pegmatites are always enriched in rare elements . Traces of most of these elements , of course , are found in almost all igneous rocks , and they reappear in the sediments derived from igneous rocks . It does not follow , however , that all or even most pegmatites contain higher percentages of rare elements than other granitic rocks . Geological evidence points to the probability that notable concentrations of rarer minerals or elements in pegmatites are more or less fortuituous , such additions often being ascribed to events subsequent to the original emplacement of the main body of the pegmatite . Most pegmatites consist principally of potash , feldspar , and quartz . Even mica , although commonly present , is not an essential constituent . Probably

This report on properties of commercial motor fuels is the twelfth in a series made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The -present report, covering the summer of 1941, presents analytical data for 1,857 samples, representing the products of approximately 135 companies. -As in previous surveys, these companies include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted, and these data are published exactly as they were received. Conforming to previous surveys, the data cover three groups of samples -- regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines -- and each group has been aver aged separately. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows: Regular price, 1,010 samples, 291 items, and 86 brands; premium price, 577 samples, 263 items, and 78 brands; third-grade gasoline, 270 samples 159 items, and 74 brands. The meanings of these terms as used in the surveys are as follows: Sample: The individual supply of gasoline obtained at the filling station and analyzed in the laboratory.

This three volume final report summarizes the activities and conclusions of this contract. The objective of the contract was to develop noise control modifications on a retrofit basis, for auger miner coal-cutting systems. Manuals were prepared to assist mine shop personnel in retrofitting the auger miner with these noise controls. Final Report Volume I - Details all vibration and acoustical tests conducted in develop¬ment of the noise controls. Final Report Volume II - Noise Control Modification Manual for the Jeffrey 100-L Auger Miner describes the various noise control modifications to the auger miner, along with fabrication procedures, cost and vendor information. The combined value of production of natural abrasives, which include tripoli, special silica stone, garnet, staurolite, and emery, decreased about 24% in 1992. The decrease in the value of tripoli production was the result of a decrease in total production. Emery decreased owing to a decrease in the volume of the material produced. Special silica stone experienced a significant increase in unit value and decrease in the quantity produced. Garnet showed a 6 % increase in quantity and a 36 % decrease in unit value. Staurolite decreased about 27 % in the quantity produced and value compared with those of 1991. The fused aluminum oxide industry showed a slight increase in the quantity produced and a 4 % increase in the value of production. The silicon carbide industry saw a 7 % increase in the quantity produced and a 10 % increase in the value of production. Combined, the industries increased 4 % in quantity and 6 % in value compared with those of 1991.

The mining industry of the United States has long been severely criti- cized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, not only as compared with other industries of the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries, particularly Europe. Statistics, often not strictly com- parable, indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These fig- ures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. The picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar mines in Europe, particularly England, Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. The sting is alleviated to some extent by the knowledge that our coal mines produce about 4 to 5 times as much coal per man day as is produced in at least some European mines. However, all of these foreign acci- dent statistics should be analyzed carefully before we become very much con- cerned about them, because they are not strictly comparable, for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions are definitely dissimilar to ours in many phases, and numerous other factors affect the comparability of foreign mine- accident statistics with those of the United States. Unquestionably, it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 140,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, three, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favor- able mine-accident rates than those of the United States (table 1). Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little more favorable than the comparable figures in the United States; namely, that mining has an accident severity rate about seven times the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

The objective of this program was to select approximately 100 acoustic materials for flammability evaluation. Noise control programs have been initiated on several types of mining equipment and vehicles which can be used in underground coal mines. Often, the materials which are used in these noise reduction programs have not been tested for flammability properties according to the same reference standard. During this program a variety of materials were selected for measurement according to ASTM E-162 procedures. A radiant heat energy source was used to measure flammability properties of 15.2 x 45.7 cm. samples. In the absorptive materials category, 45 percent of the materials tested had a flame spread index of less than 25. For barrier, damping, and isolation materials the corresponding values were 40, 43, and 9 percent.

This paper covers the salient features of the occurrence and mining of sheet mica in the United States and the preparation of mica for market; presents the results of a study of the physical properties of domestic and foreign micas, which the author hopes may he of interest to every mica user, as it definitely answers many questions as to the suitability of various minas for particular purposes; and discusses mica-trade conditions and the future outlook for the domestic mica industry. THIS report gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of the following eastern Kentucky coals: Elkhorn No. I bed, No. 28 mine, Wayland, Floyd County; Elkhorn No. 2 bed, Turner No. 5 mine, Drift, Flood County; Leatherwood (Haddix No. 5) bed, Leatherwood mine, Leatherwood. Perry County; and Harlan bed, Path Fork mine, Path Fork, Harlan County. The carbonizing properties were determined by Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) tests at 800° and 900° C. and by expansion tests in the sole-heated oven. Plastic properties were determined by tests in the Gieseler and Davis plastometers. The coals were tested singly and as blends with 20- and 30-percent low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. The dry, mineral-matter-free, fixed-carbon content of the carbonizing samples ranged from 56.7 percent for Elkhorn No. 2 to 59.7 percent for Leatherwood, and the heating values on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis ranged from 14,420 B. t. u. per pound for Elkhorn No. 2 to 14,720 for Harlan. The percentage of ash ranged from 2.9 to 6.1. The fluidity of three coals, measurer. In the Gieseler plastometer, ranged from 230 to 670 dial divisions; the fluidity of Elkhorn No. 2 could not be determined by this method. Blending lowered the fluidity of each coal; the fluidity of the blends containing 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 ranged from 16 to 53 and from 8 to 17 dial divisions, respectively. Agglutinating values determined on silicon carbide-coal mixtures in the ratio 15:1 ranged from 3.8 to 6.3.

1. Reserves are estimated in the Nemo, Sewanee, Wilder, and White Oak beds of Fentress County, Tenn. The Wilder is the only bed being mined commercially and contains the largest known reserves. Eleven lesser known beds are present in the county, but not enough information on them was available for estimating the reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 102 million tons as of January 1, 1955. This total includes 66 million tons in beds 28 inches and more thick.

This report (Independent Functional Safety Assessment Guidance 7.0) is the last in a nine-part series of recommendations and guidance addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment’s life cycle. Figure1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and after-market suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction (Part 1).—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics (PE), and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety (Part 2) and 2.2 Software Safety (Part 3).—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard IEC 61508 [IEC 1998a,b,c,d,e,f,g]and other standards. The scope is “surface and underground safety-related mining systems employing embedded, networked, and nonnetworked programmable electronics.” System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system’s safety. • 3.0 Safety File (Part 4).—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a “proof of safety” that the system and its operation meet the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. • 4.0 Safety Assessment (Part 5).—The independent assessment of the safety file is addressed. It establishes consistent methods to determine the completeness and suitability of safety evidence and justifications. This assessment could be conducted by an independent third party. • Safety Framework Guidance.—It is intended to supplement the safety framework reports with guidance providing users with additional information. The purpose is to assist users in applying the concepts presented. In other words, the safety framework is what needs to be done and the guidance is how it can be done. The guidance information reinforces the concepts, describes various methodologies that can be used, and gives examples and references. It also gives information on the benefits and drawbacks of various methodologies. The guidance reports are not intended to promote a single methodology or to be an exhaustive treatment of the subject material. They provide information and references so that the user can more intelligently choose and implement the appropriate methodologies given the user’s application and capabilities. Mineral raw materials, labor, capital, and technology form the basis of industrial production. The augmentation of one or all of the elements--labor, capital, and technology--will result in industrial growth. Thus, an increase in the labor force would increase output. A similar result would be achieved by expanding capital investment and supplying labor with more equipment. Finally, industrial growth can be achieved by introducing more productive methods and techniques born of technological advancement. The Soviet Union has employed these elements in many patterns to catapult from an agricultural to an industrial economy in four decades. The early history of the Soviet Union was marked by limited capital and borrowed technology, forcing the Soviets to concentrate on an abundant labor reserve to support the industrial program. The source of this reserve was the rural population. In [1928], 80 percent of the working population was employed in agriculture. This figure dropped to 43 percent by 1956, whereas industrial employment in the same period increased from 8 to 31 percent.3/

Through education, investigations, and studies and an expanded coal- mino inspection program the Bureau continued to dischargo the responsibility placed on it by Congress 39 years ago for promoting safety and health in the mineral industries. Although much still remains to be dono, definite progress was made in combating physical and psychological hazards in mines and plants. Accident-prevention cours os for coal-mine supervisory officials and special courses for coal-mine safety committeeman were inaugurated. First- aid, mine rescue, and other safety training was conducted for those engaged in all branches of the mineral industries. Assistance was given in recovery work after mine explosions and fires. Studies to reduce the danger of roof falls, the greatest single cause of fatal mine accidents, resulted in the development and adoption of new coal-mine roof-support techniques. Knowledge of the explosion and health hazards of mine and plant dusts and ways of pre-. venting them were advanced. Electrical equipment was tested for safety of operation in gassy coal mines, and emergency mine communications apparatus was developed and tested. More progress was made in the study of controlling flood waters that threaten life and property in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. More coal-mine inspections were made than in any previous year, and an impressive number of improvements resulted from the Federal inspectors' recommendations, even though many of them went unheeded. A program of con- trolling fires in inactive coal deposits on the public domain and private property was instituted during the year.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Andover-Sulphur Hill iron mines in Sussex County, N. J., have a production record extending over 100 years. The last production recorded was about 1880. These mines produced high-grade ore of two types: Red ore (hematite) and blue on (magnetite). Some sulfides (lead, zinc, and copper) were found underlying the iron deposits. Data as to size and grade of these sulfide bodies are very sketch"",Howard J. Hewitt of Elizabeth, N. J., lessee of the Sulphur Hill mines from 1940-45, prospected for lead, zinc, and copper. .His only production was several hundred tons of low-grade iron ore, which was crushed and used as heavy aggregate to make concrete blocks for ship ballast.In October and November 1942 made a magnetic survey of this area and bored six-diamond-drill holes with the dual objective of prospecting for sulfides and testing for extensions of the iron-are deposits indicated by the magnetic survey. 2/ In 1944, an iron-mining company examined this property and diamond-drilled seven holes. Between December 1949 and March 1950, the Bureau of Mines in search of sulfide deposits, bored three additional diamond-drill holes. Two of these were on the Sulphur Hill tract and one on the adjoining Tar Hill tract."

Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a technique to grow metallic fibers from a sulfide mineral. In this research, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) was made sulfur deficient, and the remaining sulfur partitioned to the iron in the mineral to liberate metallic copper, or to the copper to liberate metallic iron. The metals formed on the surface as fibers and in the interior as spherical particles. Fiber growth is very fast. Lengths of 3 to 4 cm form in a matter of minutes, and the diameter of individual fibers is less than 1 µm. The mechanism of fiber growth is explained, and the reactions are reversible as predicted. Copper fibers can be made to grow from the surface at 400° C or to dissolve back onto the solid surface and be replaced by iron fibers at 625° C. Growth and dissolution can also be controlled to form copper/iron duplex fibers.

Coal mine ventilation systems are often subject to high leakage rates. As a result, changes in airflow resistance will strongly affect the efficiency with which air is delivered to the working place. One major source of airflow resistance is the line brattice used to direct air from the last open crosscut to the working face. Because it is a great distance from the fan, the resistance of the line brattice can result in more overall leakage than an equivalent resistance closer to the fan. Substituting auxiliary fans for brattice eliminates this source of resistance, with improvements in system efficiency and cost. Also, in some mines, the leakage that leads to spontaneous combustion can be reduced. The benefits obtained by several different brattice and fan substitutions have been studied by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc., Lafayette, CA, under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Changes in main fan duty were compared with additional costs associated with auxiliary fans. Results indicate that in some circumstances, considerable leakage reductions and cost savings are possible.

"This circular is part III of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines, with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of miners.4/ It deals with theoretical and practical methods of conditioning air in mines to correct or alleviate the health hazards described in parts I and II and discusses the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various-parts of the world.The principal conditions to be corrected or alleviated are the chemical qualities of mine air (especially when contaminated with toxic and noxious gases and dusts) and the physical qualities (abnormal mine temperatures and humidities) that emanate from various sources in underground workings. Air motion and barometric pressure are physical qualities also to be considered.From the standpoint of health, knowledge of the composition of the air, or atmosphere, in mines and other underground operations is of prime importance. Suitable control measures or plans of procedure to combat or eliminate the hazards from contaminants must be based upon accurate information obtained by the selection and use of proper methods of sampling and analyzing mine atmospheres (1).5/Conditioning air is one of the most essential factors to be considered in any underground workings, not only from the standpoint of health and safety but also with regard to efficiency and productivity. Without modern air-conditioning, the war's great demand upon the copper mines could hardly have been met, as the mechanical refrigeration cooled off sweltering holes in less than a month, whereas in the past it was standard practice to blow air through the tunnels for 3 years or so until they were cooled.This paper discusses methods of determining the chemical and physical qualities of mine air and their control.
