CARBON-BLACK shipments, which had declined in the latter art of 1953, remained low in 1954 until after settlement of the labor strike that occurred in the rubber industry in July and August. The production of new model automobiles in the last quarter of the year spurred the demand for rubber tires and consequently the demand for carbon black. Total shipments of 1,498 million pounds for the year were 4 percent below 1953.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated creep and other properties of extruded Zn-30 pct-AI alloys containing 0 to 0.7 pct Mg. The alloys were extruded both above and below the Zn-Al eutectoid temperature of 275° C. Creep behavior is defined for the alloys as extruded and after various heat treatments. Tensile properties, hardness, thermal expansivity, impact resistance, and microstructures are given. The alloys, either with or without magnesium, required substantially less pressure for extrusion near 275° C than at higher or lower temperatures. The alloys containing magnesium exhibited significantly greater hardness, tensile strength, and creep resistance, but much lower ductility than the 2n-30 pct Al alloy. The properties were very sensitive to the processing conditions.

Large tonnages of the magnesium silicate mineral , olivine, are known to exist in the mountains of western North Carolina and in the Puget Sound region of Washington. The North Carolina deposits alone are reputed to contain at least 230 million tons of ore averaging 45 to 49 percent of magnesium oxide In both areas the mineral is readily accessible and can be mined by the simplest methods ; one of the largest of the Washington deposits is located at tidewater .

The commission may be permitted to express its earnest hope that the litigation which comes to an end with the findings and recom- mendations herein set forth will be considered by both parties to the action as definitely and equitably decided. The commission trusts that its work will show the value of the commission form of settlement and that its work will serve as a prece- dent to be followed in disputes relative to technical subjects. If the work of the commission is productive of a tendency on the part of technical litigants to avoid the use of the courts for the settlement of disputes it will not have been done in vain. Such tendency will surely grow and ultimately such differences will be arbitrated by technically trained men without recourse to the courts of law. Appended to the report of the findings of the commission are to be found the detailed reports covering the several lines of inquiry and investigation carried on by the commission and upon which its findings are based, and also a detailed statement of the fiscal affairs of the commission. A word of explanation is necessary in regard to the fiscal statement. While each party to the litigation has agreed to bear one-half of the expense of the investigations of the commission, it will be noted that the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. is credited with $21,000, while Solano County is credited with but $6,000. The U.S. Bureau of Mines characterized Hg-containing wastes and used a thermal-desorption process to remove and recover the contained Hg. The wastes were generated by an electrical-parts plant engaged in the assembly of Hg-containing switches and contained phenolic resins and paper insulating materials mixed with soil. The average Hg content was 396 ppm. Numerous characterization tests showed the Hg was tightly absorbed and could not be removed or concentrated by leaching or gravity separation techniques. Laboratory retort tests showed the Hg content reduced to < 16 ppm in 2 h at 400 °C; rotary-kiln, thermal-desorption tests required 4 h at 450 °C. Airflow through the retort im¬proved thermal-desorption efficiency, but vacuum operation only slightly reduced the temperature needed for thermal desorption. Offgases from decomposition of organic materials were burned in a high-temperature afterburner and subsequently cooled in a heat exchanger to condense water vapor. Finally, the Hg vapor was condensed and absorbed from the offgas by activated charcoal. Mercury recovery was over 99.99 pct of the desorbed Hg. Thermal-desorption processes have had wide application to many Hg-containing wastes, and historical experience in Hg mining has demonstrated its potential cost effectiveness.

From 1986 to 1989, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 59,600-acre Mexican Mountain Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-054) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Emery County, UT, about 24 miles east of Castle Dale, UT. A review of the geologic and mining literature, and a field examination identified two uranium prospects in the Wilderness Study Area, and three copper prospects nearby. One-hundred ninety-five rock samples were taken.

THE WILLISTON basin is the largest known sedimentary basin on the North. American continent. Two-thirds of this large basin lies within the United States in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Less than 10 years after the first commercial oil discovery in North Dakota in 1951, the petroleum became one of the largest industries in the three-state area. Crude petroleum is now the most valuable mineral resource in the area. In 1960, the basin produced 39 million barrels of worth $100 million at the wellhead. Most of the 137 oil pools covered to date are in Paleozoic carbonates at depths ranging from 3,000 to 13,000 feet. The major producing fields, centered on the Cedar Creek anticline in Montana and the Nesson anticline in North Dakota, produce from depths below 6,000 feet. This report presents descriptions of all phases of the Williston basin petroleum industry, including leasing, exploration, geology, drilling, production, transportation, and refining. Engineering, physical, and production data, maps, and crude petroleum analyses for 137 separate oil pools are included.

The Department of the Interior has recently investigated the atmospheric conditions in tunnels of the Union Pacific Railroad in Utah and Wyoming , by observations made from the cabs of freight locomotives . This work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the request of , and in cooperation with , the Union Pacific Railroad Co .. and was brought about by several accidents to members of engine crews while passing through tunnels , from pollution of the tunnel air by exhaust gases from freight locomotives . The object was to determine the cause of gassing accidents , by examining into composition of the air in locomotive cabs while passing through railroad turmels ; to learn the effect of these conditions on the engine crew; and to provide a means of protection for the men so exposed . Gas samples and temperature readings taken in the cabs of locomotives were used in studying the atmospheric conditions to which the locomotive crews were exposed . The symptoms and the physiologica effects produced in men exposed to the atmospheres encountered were studied . The pulse rates and body temperatures were taken , and the determinations of the carbon monoxide content of the blood were made . Various methods for the prevention of gassing and for the protection of men therefrom were considered and tested , among which were the use of mechanical devices for deflecting the smoke away from the engine cab, and the use of various types of gas masks and breathing apparatus . While this investigation is a part of the safety work of the Bureau of Mines in connection with hazards from atmospheres containing carbon monoxide ( CO ) , the results are of particular value to railroads operating steam locomotives through tunnels , and are also valuable to other industries where atmospheres having poisonous gases or of a high temperature and humidity may be present . A computer simulation has been developed to estimate the chances of a miner making a successful escape while wearing a SCSR. The model takes into account: (1) training in the use of SCSRs, (2) apparatus integrity, and (3) the oxygen cost of a mine escape. This Bureau of Mines report examines survival odds for a prototypical escape, and illustrates how these odds change when SCSR training is improved.

To develop a conceptual design for an automated longwall mining system, one should know what has been done, what is being done today and what is being planned for tomorrow. The bibliography referenced and discussed in this report provides a good source for that knowledge. To scientifically determine where attention should be focused to up-grade a system, the system must be quantized as far as possible. The Mechanization Profile of Appendix A-I is discussed in this report and has been used to analyze and determine the degree of mechanization currently in use and/or described in the literature for all three major elements of the long-wall system, namely, Winning, Roof Support and Haulage. The charted profiles make it self-evident where attention and design effort is needed to remove human operators from the face of the mine.

This Country Documentation Report presents the development of economic indices for the Philippines for the period from 1970 through 1981. The work was done through the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Availability Program, under Contract number J01225001. This contract calls for the development of twelve index time series describing factor input costs in the mining sector of 95 countries. The twelve index time series describe the costs of: 1) mining wages, 2) construction wages, 3) equipment and repair parts, 4) bits and related steel, 5) eimber and lumber, 6) fuel, 7) powder and balsting agents, 8) tires, 9) construction materials, 10) industrial materials, 11) transportation, and 12) electrical power. These indices combined with weight factors being developed by the personnel of the Minerals Availability Field Office (MAFO) of the Bureau of Mines in Denver, Colorado, will be used to perform instantaneous updates of all costs relating to the mining industry. The indices were developed primarily for use in the Bureau&apos;s Minerals Availability Program in assessing the worldwide availability of nonfuel minerals.

The real gross national product (GNP) advanced at a annual rate of 3.1 % during the second quarter, following a revised 3.4% increase in the first quarter (see table 1). Export growth continues to play an important role in the rising output. Combined with the decline in imports, it resulted in a noticeably improved trade position. Imports of consumer goods, including automobiles and food, fell while exports rose. Imported cars have been losing ground to domestic cars. The foreign car share of the U.S. market fell from 36% in October 1987, to 29% in May 1988. Business spending for new plant and equipment contributed strongly to the GNP increase. Equipment purchases, particularly of computers, rose at a 14.8% annual rate, following a large first-quarter gain. Purchases of structures rose 11.8%. The other key component of business spending, change in business inventories, declined from the first quarter. Inventory buildup in late 1987 had been considered excessive.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methods to electrodeposit erosion-resistant titanium diboride coatings from molten alkali metal borate baths at 900° C. These coatings have been shown to be highly resistant to material loss during impingement with high-velocity alumina and silicon carbide powders, and they show promise as protective coatings to reduce metal loss in erosive chemical environments, such as coal gasification systems. The most erosion-resistant coatings were prepared on nickel, Inconel, and molybdenum from an electrolyte containing LiBO2, NaBO2, Na2Ti03, and TiO2. The best coatings were deposited at current densities of [~]20 ma/cm2, using titanium or titanium diboride anodes. Erosion-resistant coatings were shown to exhibit (1) a high degree of crystallographic orientation along the (100) or (110) planes, (2) a chromium impurity level of less than 3 pct, and (3) a uniform, smooth, consolidated surface appearance when viewed under a microscope or by scanning electron microscopy. Optical spectroscopic studies of the molten electrolyte suggest that the lower valent (+3) titanium ion predominates in the baths.

"Contact-angle and flotation techniques were used to evaluate the influence of oxygen - both that inherent in the coal and that introduced by ambient temperature, aqueous oxidation - on a wide range of coal ranks. Oxidation was found to decrease the hydrophobicity and floatability of coal; with the effect being minor for coals of high rank but becoming increasingly important as the rank of coal is reduced. As an approximation, oxidation makes a coal behave as if it were one of lower rank. Frother only flotation' of coal· correlates with the captive-bubble contact angle whereas when oil is used as a collector, the flotation appears to follow the pattern shown by the water sessile drop on a fresh, un-reagentized coal surface. Coal recovery lost through oxidation may often be recovered by use of a variety of collectors, of which No. 2 foe! oil is among the best of those reagents tested. A simple alkali-extraction test may be used to estimate the influence of oxidation on coal preparation processes and use.INTRODUCTIONThe hydrophobicity of coal is not only a function of its rank but also of the extent of oxidation of the coal during and subsequent to its formation. Weathering and oxidation processes may proceed in-situ for coal deposits that outcrop near the earth's surface, or the oxidation of the coal particles may occur during mining, stockpiling or processing. Such oxidation, whether it affects the bulk-coal sample or on1y a thin outer layer on the coal surface, can dramatically influence the wettability of the particle and hence such processes as flotation, filtration, flocculation and dispersion.Many of the studies made on the oxidation of coals ·were designed to study its effect on flotation, coking or pyrolysis. The. present study 'is directed exclusively toward the effect of oxidation on the hydrophobicity and floatability of the coal. One of the first studies of the effect of oxidation on coal flotation was that of Sun [l] who found that as oxidation proceeds, coal becomes progressively more hydrophilic. Low-temperature oxidation (100-150°C for 250 h) generally lowered the coal floatability with an oily collector only slightly, but more extensive oxidation (200- 3500 C for 250 h) reduced coal floatability seriously. Sun also found that cationic amines were effective collectors for the oxidized coal which infers that oxidation makes the coal more negative in solution. He attributed the loss of floatability to be due to the accumulation of water-insoluble oxidation products at the coal surface. Gayle et al. [2] found that oxidation adversely affected coal flotation when an aliphatic-alcohol frother was used, though a small amount of oxidation appeared to improve the floatability of some coals using a kerosene-pine oil, collector-frother mixture in pilot-plant testing. Prolonged oxidation adversely affected the flotation recovery of the coals tested, the effect being more pronounced when an alcoholic-type frother only was used. They also noted that the reduction in floatability of lower rank bituminous coals was more affected by oxidation than was that of higher rank bituminous coals."

The Crewstation Analysis Programs (CAP) is a package of computer programs that can be used to analyze some human engineering aspects of crewstation design (such as visibility and illumination) that have particular significance in underground mining. It was developed under the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Health, Safety and Mining Technology program at the Pittsburgh Research Center, Pittsburgh, PA. This manual describes the steps necessary to collect data in the laboratory to develop luminaire profiles for the CAP illumination analysis. It also describes how the CAP Illumination Model calculates illumination. 1.1 How CAP Calculates Illumination 1.1.1 Background -CAP currently includes assessments of visibility and illumination in the surrounding work area. The advantage of using computers for these types of analyses is that many design iterations can be tested quickly and efficiently to learn the effects of changes. This reduces the need for expensive testing using physical mockups. Another advantage is that design ideas can be tested in situations where it would not normally be possible. For instance, the effects of modifications to a lighting system or canopy design on visibility could be tested while the machine remains in service.

[The ventilation of development faces in mines for diluting gas or dust concentrations aid in hot mines for providing air-motion cooling affect, by fan-pipe units discharging high-velocity streams of air close to the face, is an important phase of mitre ventilation. The effectiveness of such units depends largely on the air-flow distribution between-the pipe discharge said the face, a subject on which little definite information is available. A study of the air, flow from grills into rooms3/ has provided sore basic data, but under conditions so different from mine fan-pipe installations in development ends that tae data to are of doubtful application to mine installa¬tions, owing to differences in air-flow conditions. The purposes of this report is to present and discuss the results of an initial series of tests of a general investigation designed to yield definite laws and design data for the discharge of fan-pine lines in nines. The s series was planned to yield preliminary data on the effects of velocity of discharge, size and shape of tripe, and adjacent calls on the air-flow distribution. Tents were made on 10-inch pine with seven different end conditions and one change of wall condition. Changes in size and shape of discharge wore made b y short transformation pieces directly at the discharge end, with the result that effects due to contraction and expansion of the flow, which proved to be of much greater importance than was expected, totally obscured any normal effects cue to size anti shape. The results of this series of tests, therefore, relate to 10-inch pipe with various discharge designs is and ago se reported.]

Colorado has been producing petroleum since 1863 but only recently has become a major oil State. The first well was drilled on Oil Creek near Florence, but out-put was relatively small until discovery and development of the Weber sandstone reservoir at Rangely. Oil was discovered in the Weber sandstone in 1933, and the reservoir was developed after 1940, bringing Colorado, in 1949, to 11th place among the 48 States as an oil producer. Colorado&apos;s output increased further because of the discovery and development of many fields in the Julesburg Basin since 1949 By 1954 Colorado was in ninth place and maintained that position through 1955.4/ Between 1946 and 1951, Colorado&apos;s oil production more than doubled, while the total United States production increased only 25 percent. It seems probable that production will continue to expand in Colorado for many years. This report presents analyses of 92 crude oils from 73 fields representing 90 percent of the production in 1955. Abridged analyses are listed for easy comparision, and complete analyses arc given in the appendix. Oil samples were collected for study from many different sources. Although many of the newer fields were not sampled, their oils probably are very similar to those from corresponding formations that were studied and tabulated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.
