"Purpose of InvestigationThe process of removing solid material from liquid suspensions has been studied at the Northwest Experiment Station, United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington, as part of a general program to investigate the dewatering of Pacific Northwest plastic kaolins, which is difficult by ordinary filter-pressing methods. The present paper is a progress report of the work began by Vance S. Cartwright in 1928 and continued in 1931 and 1932. Spray evaporation is believed to be valuable for the following classes or grades of clay and clay mixtures:(1) Highly colloidal, plastic-type clays, which release their mechanically attached water with difficulty; (2) clays prepared for shipment in pulverized or powdered condition; and (3) synthetic, ceramic, porcelain, and tile mixtures prepared as aqueons suspension, dried and pulverized before molding. Dilute suspensions can be dewatered by spray evaporation to produce concen-trated casting slip or plastic clay with a lower water content.The most common dewatering method used in preparing powdered kaolin for the market comprises the following steps: Reduction of the water content by filter-pressing from approximately 75 percent in the thick ""slip"" condition to about 30 percent in the condition; further reduction of the water in the filter-press cakes by heat to about 5 percent; and pulverization of the dried cakes in hammer or dust. These three steps can be simplified to a single process by spray evaporation."

The Bureau of Mines sampled surface exposures of podiform chromite in the Caribou Mountain-Melozitna ultramafic belt in the Kokrines-Hodzana Highlands, central Alaska. Fieldwork began in 1979 as part of an assessment of the mineral potential of lands adjacent to the trans-Alaska pipeline corridor, for the Bureau of Land Management, and continued through 1981 as a Bureau of Mines investigation. The belt comprises six complexes of which the three closest to the pipeline corridor were investigated. Concentrations of chromite disseminated in dunite host rock make up mineralized intervals ranging in thickness from less than an inch to 5 ft and in grade from 3 to 23 pct chromium. The largest occurrence has an exposed strike length of 80 ft. Bulk surface samples were collected from 10 of these exposures, and beneficiation tests on the samples produced concentrates of metallurgical, refractory, and subindustrial grades. The rare metals are becoming increasingly important to our industries. Rare-metal alloys have properties which indicate that we are only on the threshold of the possibilities of their utilization, not only in making nonferrous alloys, but also as special steels. Not only are their uses broadening rapidly, but the metals are affecting our industries in other ways. The oxides and some salts are used as pigments; others have medicinal value. The pure metals are made into filaments for incandescent lamps, and targets for X-ray tubes. By their efficient use in alloys, the weight of automobiles is reduced, • and the wear and tear on tires and roads is thus minimized; in machine shops they help to give greater efficiency to tools and reduce production costs. Their development has marked a milestone in the progress of civilization. There has been considerable uncertainty regarding analytical methods for the rare metals. A great deal has been published, but the weak and the strong points of the various methods have not been investigated as carefully as is needed. The Bureau of Mines at its Rare Metals station in Colorado necessarily had to do a great deal of analytical work in connection with the metals covered by this bulletin, which aims to give the results of the experience so acquired. No claim for much originality is made, although some published methods given have been modified, and some new ones have been developed by members of the staff. The principal methods available were studied critically, and it is to be hoped that the work will assist those interested in analytical work in connection with the metals named.

This paper describes the operations of the St. Joe Mining & Milling Co. in Boulder County, Colo., as of June 1936. Later a brief visit was made to the mine in September 1936; information obtained at that time has also been recorded. The company operates a gold mine, the Grand Republic, in the Sugar Loaf mining district; a 100-ton flotation mill in Lefthand Canyon near Gold Hill; and a custom sampling punt, the Boulder Ore Sampling Works, at Boulder, Colo.

Tin deposits in Catron County, New Mexico, were explored by the Bureau of Mines under authority of the Strategic Minerals Act of August 1939. The investigation covered both lode and placer deposits and was later extended to deposits in Sierra County. Six of the known deposits were examined by E. D. Gardner, supervising engineer of the Southwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, and S. G. Lasky, a geologist of the Federal Geological Survey, in June and July 1939. It was recommended that the more promising occurrences be explored by test pitting, trenching, and sampling. Field work, under supervision of M. E. Volin, began in September and continued through December 1939. The area was mapped by Carl Fries, Jr., of the Federal Geological Survey, in 1939 and 1940. The La Cruz Development Co. acquired control of the Squaw Creek placer claims in 1942 and began active sampling and development preliminary to large-scale operations. The result of this work showed a considerably higher tin content than that found by the Bureau of Mines in 1939. Because of this report and reports from other parts of the district that large-scale operations for the production of tin from lode deposits were possible, it was recommended that the Bureau of Mines resample parts of Squaw Creek and conduct a mill test of lode material to determine whether a concentrate could be made that was high enough in tin and low enough in iron to be acceptable in American smelting practice. This work, under the supervision of Paul L. Russell, was begun in November 1942 and completed in January 1943, during which time the Sierra Metals Co. acquired control of a large area in Sawmill Canyon. At the suggestion of the Federal Geological Survey and the War Production Board, which had reason to believe that a great deal of commercial material existed on certain flatlands and gully slopes, the project was extended to include test pitting and sampling of those areas. This work was completed in February 1943.

"INTRODUCTION Industrial sands, characterized by specific physical and chemical proportion, are,essential new materials for the manufacture of glass, sodium siliante and other products. Sands of suitable characteristics are used extensively for molds and cores in the casting of metals as a granular medium in municipal water filters, as abrasives, as traction sand to prevent the slipping of driving wheels of self-propelled vehicles on trucks and in various ceramic and other structural forms. In addition to the use of common silicon sands in concrete, cement, and mortar, special sands find use in sand-lime brick oxychloride cement, and flooring, for coating prepared roofing, and for placing ware in saggers although sand for sandpaper has been mostly displaced by other harder mineral or synthetic grains, other abrasive uses are numerous and include sandblasting stone sawing, glass burnishing and finishing."

1. Estimates have been made for eight coal beds in Marion County, but only the Pittsburgh is important from a production standpoint at this time. The Pittsburgh bed has the largest recoverable reserve, and the Sewickley is second in importance. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons estimated at 3,141 million tons, as of January lion tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick in all beds, based on a minimum per acre-foot of coal in place, are 1, 1955. Of this total, 2,983 mil-Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Respirable dust exposure has long been known to be a serious health threat to workers in many industries. In coal mining, overexposure to respirable coal mine dust can lead to coal workers? pneumoconiosis (CWP). CWP is a lung disease that can be disabling and fatal in its most severe form. In addition, miners can be exposed to high levels of respirable silica dust, which can cause silicosis, another disabling and/or fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for CWP or silicosis. The goal, therefore, is to limit worker exposure to respirable dust to prevent development of these diseases. The passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 established respirable dust exposure limits, dust sampling requirements for inspectors and mine operators, a voluntary x-ray surveillance program to identify CWP in underground coal miners, and a benefits program to provide compensation to affected workers and their families. The tremen­dous human and financial costs resulting from CWP and silicosis in the U.S. underground coal mine workforce are shown by the following statistics: ? During 1970?2004, CWP was a direct or contributing cause of 69,377 deaths of U.S. underground coal mine workers. ? During 1980?2005, over $39 billion in CWP benefits were paid to underground coal miners and their families. ? Recent x-ray surveillance data for 2000?2006 show an increase in CWP cases. Nearly 8% of examined underground coal miners with 25 or more years of experience were diagnosed with CWP. ? ?Continuous miner operator? is the most frequently listed occupation on death certificates that record silicosis as the cause of death.

"The Bureau of Mines evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary gold production from 135 mines and deposits worldwide. Collectively, the evaluated countries represent 93 pct of world gold production. Total recoverable gold available (as of January 1984) from a subset of 111 significant producing mines and developing deposits in 13 market economy countries (MEC's) is estimated at 810 million tr oz. The Republic of South Africa is estimated to account for 87 pct of total recoverable gold. The United States and Canada account for 4 and 4.5 pct of the total, respectively. Eighty-three percent of total recoverable gold is available at a constant 1984 break-even price of $400/tr oz, and 70 pct is available at $300/tr oz. South Africa accounts for 90 pct of the gold available at $400/tr oz or less.Major conclusions are that (1) South Africa should remain the largest world producer through the year 2000, (2) annual MEC output in 2000 should not be significantly different than current output given constant 1984 gold prices of more than $300/tr oz, and (3) there may be a significant decline in production after 2010 in the absence of major new discoveries and continued development of new mines to offset the depletion of the South African mines. INTRODUCTIONSince the late 1970's the world gold mining industry has been characterized by dynamic growth in production and volatility in price. World production in 1983 was almost 15 pct greater than in 1980, and the short-term trend continues upward. Annual dollar-based price changes since the early 1970's have been unprecedented in both magnitude and volatility. This commodity, which sold for $35/tr oz3 for over a third of a century, reached an annual average $612/tr oz in 1980. Until 1980, the future price of gold seemed set on an upward trend. Since that year, however, world gold prices have fallen by over 50 pct to slightly over $300/tr oz at the end of 1984.Against this background, this study was undertaken to determine (1) the level of world demonstrated gold resources, (2) total and annual availability of gold mine production, (3) long-run production costs per operation and by national aggregates, (4) the economic and technical factors that impact upon cost and availability, and (5) probable future mine production and cost trends."

Systematic waterflooding was first tried in Washington County, Okla., in 1937, when a 40-acre project was begun in secs. 24, 29, 32, and 33, T. 27 N., R. 13 E., jointly by the Keener Oil Co. and the Phillips Petroleum Co. The property later was sold to Lee Morrison. A second project was begun in 1941 in sec. 14, T. 6 N., R. 12 E., by the Oklahoma Oil Corp. Both projects were abandoned by the end of 1942. A third project was begun in 1945 and the fourth in 1948, but 1949 actually was the beginning of intensive waterflooding development in Washington County. The results of previous waterflooding projects are described in Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.2 3 4/ Oil production in the county followed a similar trend, dropping to a low of 990,000 barrels in 1945, then steadily increasing until 1956, when more than 4 mil-lion barrels of oil was produced. Most of the increase in oil production is directly attributable to water injection.

An investigation of coal deposits near Cerrillos Santa Fe County, N. Mex., was undertaken 14 the Bureau of Mines in 1943 as part of a general program to determine sources of metallurgical coal for western steel plants. Almost all of the coal used for metallurgical purposes west of the Continental Divide Is mined from the Lower Sunnyside bed in, Carbon County,, Utah. Coke used in western steel plants that is produced from Lower Sunnyside a coal is weaker, structurally, than coke used elsewhere in this country. For this reason, western coal operators and steel manufacturers are anxious to develop new areas of coking coal of better quality then the coal produced from the Sunnyside bed. The objective of investigations of western coals was to (a) develop additional reserves of coking coal to supplement proved reserves in the Sunnyside bed. and (b) develop; if possible, reserves of coal with coking quantities superior to those of Lower Sunnyside

"INTRODUCTION Experience in drilling oil and gas wells has shown that the voidance of blow-outs, twist-offs, fishing jobs, loss of circulation, and heaving and caving of shale formations into the drill hole depends largely on how well the drilling-mud fluid serves its purpose. A possible method for the control of the drilling fluids may be seen from a study of the relation between the particle-size distribution and some of the important drilling-fluid properties, such as the ability to build quickly a relatively impervious mud sheath on the wall of the hole in the porous formations penetrated by the bit during drilling operations. In a wartime economy, which urgently requires conservation of steel, proper functioning of the drilling fluid is particularly important because, as Parks 4/ has stated, intelligent use of good drilling fluids makes possible drilling of wells for thousands of feet in open holes without the necessity of setting protective strings of casing to control the movement of salt water, gas, and troublesome formations into the borehole; consequently, especially in deep wells, of proper drilling fluids materially reduces the need for casing and lowers the cost of drilling and completing the wells."

WHEN the Bureau of Mines initiated the program of large-scale research and development in the field of synthetic liquid fuels authorized in the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1044, the Coal Preparation Section was assigned the task of obtaining data on the preparation characteristics of the coal in large reserves that might be adaptable to use in this new industry. It is natural that, as the rapidly developing general research program brought about new concepts of raw-material quality, preferred geographical location, and the like, the orientation of coal-preparation investigations should have undergone some change. The first major assignment was the sampling and testing of a series of typical American coals deemed to he suitable for hydrogenation based on early research work conducted by the Bureau of Mines. This first series of tests has been completed and is reported in this paper.

To determine the availability of aluminum from world bauxite resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated 139 bauxite deposits worldwide and evaluated the potential production of aluminum based on the demonstrated resources of bauxite ore from 91 mines and deposits in 22 market economy countries. The demonstrated resources of the bauxite mines and deposits included in this study represent an in situ resource of 20.2 billion metric tons of bauxite. Total identified bauxite resources in market economy countries amount to roughly 31.9 billion tons. Of the demonstrated resource, some 18.8 billion tons of bauxite considered minable provide a production potential of 3.6 billion tons of primary aluminum. Given the wide geographic distribution of bauxite deposits, stable supplies of bauxite for aluminum production seem assured well into the next century. However, a tight market situation could develop during the 1990's unless the real price of aluminum increases enough to stimulate massive new investments in production capacity, particularly in refining and smelting. This study indicates that a real price of at least $0.85 per pound (in January 1980 dollars) would be necessary to stimulate the required investments and provide a sufficient rate of return on invested capital.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between, the Coordinating Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (C.R.C.) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.-4/ Further reports have been issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 and during the winter of 1942-43 and the summer of 1943 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1,) 41-42 and during the summer of 1942. The present report presents analytical data for 1,356 samples, representing the products of approximately 103 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines - and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 770 samples, 286 items, and 94 brands; premium-price, 537 samples, 236 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 49 samples, 31 items, and 18 brands. Dump site injuries occur in all major mineral industries. Working in elevated areas near an edge is a common hazard for operators of off-highway mobile mining equipment. In this Information Circular (IC), serious injuries involving haulage trucks working at dump sites are examined for the period 1988 to 1997. Data were acquired from injury reports gathered by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The IC is organized into three sections. The first presents an overview of the frequency and severity of injuries. The second analyzes injury characteristics using MSHA-defined data fields and author-defined injury classifications. Key findings are discussed in the third section. In summary, 370 serious injuries were identified that involved trucks at dump sites, of which 26 were fatalities. Although haulage truck activities at dump sites resulted in a small proportion of the total number of injuries at surface mines, these injuries were much more likely to result in death or significant amounts of lost time than most other surface mine injuries. These findings support the belief that haulage truck activities at dump sites are worthy of continued study by those interested in improving the health and safety of workers at surface mines.

PRODUCTION of bituminous coal and lignite increased substantially in 1963 compared with 1962 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. For the fourth year there was no upward trend in mechanization; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 3 previous years and the percentage of total tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. Furthermore, the percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1963--459 million tons-was 9 percent greater than the 422 million tons produced in 1962. Production was greater in 1963, largely because of expanded consumption by the electric utilities and an increase in exports.
