"INTRODUCTION The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry.The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment, through improved types of lightning arresters, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures.LIGHTNING PHENOMENAIn 1751, Franklin proved that, lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition to define the various phases of the phenomenon. As part of the Bureau of Mines health and safety research program, a short-range locator system, capable of locating miners who have become trapped following a mine accident, has been devised, The system consists of a lightweight, low-power radio transmitter incorporated into a miner's cap lamp battery and a directional receiver carried by rescuers. Prototype transmitters have been constructed, and the propagation of their signals has been investigated, The detectability of the signal in underground coal mines has also been investigated, This research indicates that a short-range location system would serve as an economical and practical means of locating miners from within the mine following an accident,

This report describes Bureau of Mines experiments and reviews the work of others on the exposure of coal and coal-derived products to gamma rays and some other types of radiation. Results are presented on tests of three bituminous coals and a lignite that had been pulverized to minus 200-mesh particles and exposed to 1,000 megaroentgens of gamma irradiation from spent-fuel elements of a nuclear reactor. Of about 20 chemical and physical tests in Bureau work, only mass spectrometry of gases evolved during vacuum pyrolysis of the coals to 450° C gave results indicating differences in the irradiated and unirradiated samples. Mass-spectral distribution curves for CO and CO2 evolution showed fewer irregularities (reversals of curvature) for irradiated coals; thus, mass spectrometry appears to be the most sensitive method for determining radio-induced changes in coal. It is concluded that coal is not significantly altered by gamma irradiation owing to the resistivity of its highly condensed ring structure. High-level gamma irradiation, therefore, is unlikely to prove advantageous in coal processing and utilization. Specially treated coals, because of resistivity of coal to radiation damage, may be useful as an absorbent in processing radioactive wastes.

A two-dimensional finite element program has been modified and extended to account for some of the rock mechanics complexities associated with single entry development of longwall coal mine panels. Program capability includes arbitrary assignment of element properties without regard to element ordering, anisotropic elastic, plastic and brittle rock properties that may be time dependent (aging), arbitrary mining sequences and provision for the effects of artificial support on the adjacent strata. Failure is according to an extended von Mises criterion that may be linear or quadratic in form; flow rules are obtained from the yield function taken as the plastic potential, but brittle behavior is treated as a discontinuous process of material properties change with deformation. In either case the extent of failure is calculated from the external boundary conditions. Application of the program to essentially two-dimensional problems resulted in lose agreement between calculated displacements and field measurements in the double entry system. Bleeder entries were stable in one locality and not in another. Artificial support had little influence on stability.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of fracture fillings and associated alteration on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Experimental results are presented for 98 specimens from the Climax mine, which were tested since the annual report (May 1973). The conclusions reached are based on both these results and those reported in the annual report. The locations studied are the Climax and Henderson mines in Colorado and the San Manuel mine in Arizona. The rock types studied from each location are from: 1) Climax, medium-grained granite, fine-grained granite, granite porphyry, schist, and gneiss; 2) Henderson, rhyolite porphyry; 3) San Manuel, quartz monzonite and quartz monzonite porphyry. A description of the rocks was made including: color, texture, mineralogy, composition and fabric of fracture fillings, density, apparent porosity, and optical diffraction patterns. Unconfined and triaxial compression tests were run on the Climax and San Manuel specimens. Sonic velocities were measured during the compression tests; Shore sceleroscope hardness was measured before the compression tests. Conclusions are that some relation appears to exist between compressive strength and the following properties and features for all specimens: dynamic Young's modulus, sonic velocity, density, rock composition, slope of velocity curve, composition and fabric of fracture fillings-veinlets, and apparent porosity. There appears to be some relation between compressive strength and Shore scelerscope hardness for the quartz monzonite (San Manuel). A relation appears to exist between texture and compressive strength and the extent of failure on fracture fillings for schists, gneiss, and fine-grained granite (Climax). The amount of swelling clays (montmorillonite, hydromicas, etc.) present in the rock and the relative number of fractures in which they constitute of major portion of the fracture fillings are related to the strength of the rocks. Possible tests for checking the amount of these clays present is presented including saturation, dyes, and X-rays. A useful index relating to rock strength, as revealed in this study, is the presence of swelling clays in detectable abundances. These clays can be detected in the field with a simple wetting and striking test; in the laboratory they can be detected by X-ray and dye methods.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting investigations to improve design methods for mining volcano-genic massive-sulfide (VMS) type deposits in environmentally sensitive regions. This study was conducted at the Greens Creek Mine, which is typical of many VMS-type deposits throughout southeast Alaska, and served as a case history for computer modeling and structural analysis. Results indicated that the finite-element design method provided reasonable comparisons with both the anticipated regional stress regime and the measured deformational response of the underground accessways. Investigators concluded that reasonable accuracy can be expected for stability analyses of proposed mine design scenarios at this mine using the results of this preliminary study.

Oil fields in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming have produced 731 million barrels of petroleum through 1959. Production in 1959 was 32 million barrels, the highest production since 1924. The record production was in 1923, when the Basin produced 38 million barrels of oil and the Salt Creek field, then at its peak, produced 35 million barrels. In this report, the characteristics of crude oils found in the Basin are used as a basis for determining the best re-fining uses for the oils and for predicting the characteristics of oils that may be discovered in the Basin in the future. Analyses of 108 oils sampled over a period of 30 years are presented Crude oils of two major types are produced from the Powder River Basin. One has a low sulfur content and occurs in younger formations, and the other has a high sulfur content and occurs in older formations. The oils with low sulfur contents are generally light colored and waxy, and may be either paraffinic or naphthenic. The oils with high sulfur contents are usually dark colored and asphaltic; only their low boiling fractions are paraffinic. Alteration appears to account for the anomalous properties of some oils found at shallow depths. Shapes and slopes of correlation index curves classify the oils into the same two groups as their sulfur contents, with gently sloping curves representing the low-sulfur oils and steep curves representing high-sulfur, asphaltic oils,

In conventional noncoal, room-and-pillar mining, the cutting machine is frequently a major source of airborne dust. Water is often used for dust control. An evaluation of typically used water systems during this program showed that they reduced dust levels by 60 to 70 percent over dry cutting when at least 0.5 gpm of water was applied. These systems, however, are only marginally effective in maintaining compliance levels and the added moisture causes operational problems. During the program, three additional dust control systems were designed, fabricated, and evaluated. The first, a hollow cutter bar, was designed to capture dust in the kerf at the cutting zone. The system was only marginally effective in reducing dust levels due to its lack of control of other sources. Large quantities of material captured by the system made it operationally questionable. The second, a machine mounted exhaust system, was extremely effective in capturing virtually all the dust generated in the heading. The captured dust was ducted out of the heading and exhausted downstream in the crosscut. Exhausting the dust without scrubbing, however, creates problems for personnel working downstream of the cutting machine. Successful application would require changes to the mine ventilation system and mining sequence. The third, foam, injected foam from an onboard generator through a channel to the cutting zone at the tip of the bar. Test results showed that foam, using 1/3 to 1/2 the total fluid quantity, was equally effective when compared to the mine's current water system.

The Blackbird district, Lemhi County, Idaho, has long been recognized as a potential source of cobalt and copper. However, the comparatively low grade and small size of the known ore bodies, the small demand for cobalt, and. the lack of adequate roads throughout the region precluded extensive exploration of the early discoveries in the area. Recent advances in alloy metallurgy, accentuated by wartime activities, greatly increased the demand for sources of domestic cobalt. Beginning In 1941, engineers of the Bureau of Mines conducted an examination and exploration program in the Blackbird district. This work was supplemented by an exploration program by engineers of the Howe Sound Mining Co., 730 Fifth Ave., New York 19, N.Y.

"Previous investigations, too numerous to be listed in entirety, have been performed to determine the physical properties of rock. When considered according to their objectives, most of these investigations can be grouped as follows: First, the geologic group (1,2),4/ in which the purpose was to obtain information on the physical properties of the rocks that make up the earth's crust. Particular emphasis has been placed on the determination of the elastic constants--that is, Young's modulus, the modules of rigidity, and Poisson's ratio – as these quantities determine the propagation characteristics of seismic waves. Second, the structural properties group (3 - 11), in which the physical properties of architectural or monumental stone, concrete and aggregate rock, road blocks (cobblestone), and the like were desired. The tests have been quite general and include, besides the elastic properties; the compressive and tensile strength, and the toughness, hardness, and weathering properties of many types of rocks.To .a lesser degree, investigations have been carried out to determine the physical properties of mine rock. A few reports (12 - 14) present data on the crushability and grindability of mine rock, and a large number of papers discuss grinding and crushing procedures and methods of analyzing the data (for example, see references 15 - 17). Some of the latter group also have given the results of tests on mine rock; however, comparatively few include an adequate petrographic description or information on other physical properties of the rock. A few papers,(18 - 22) have reported studies of the strength of rock specimens in respect to the strength of parts of mine structures, such as pillars, roof, arches, etc. Other papers (23 - 26) have discussed investigations on such subjects as primary and secondary crushing, diamond and pneumatic rock drilling, explosive breaking and shattering of rock, rate of drifting and miring, and other allied problems. The majority of these reports have given no more than a cursory, description of the rocks and have included no statement regarding the physical properties. When statements have been given regarding the physical properties, they have usually referred only to isolated tests, making correlations between variations in the physical properties and variations in the .test under consideration difficult, if not impossible. Some reports have included handbook values on such characteristics as the crushing strength, hardness, and toughness. This practice is not satisfactory, because these values are usually given for col¬lective types of rocks, such as granites, limestones, and marbles, and it is known that the variations of the physical properties within these groups is often larger than the differences between the groups."

A comprehensive review of published research was carried out to identify methods for teaching and assessing critical but nonroutine skills needed for coping with emergency situations. Specific methods for assessing critical skills proficiency in aviation, medicine, organization management, the military, and other industrial/technical workplaces are described. The potential application of these methods for teaching and assessing (1) critical first aid and (2) self-rescue and escape skills to underground coal miners in annual refresher training is explored. Research and development activities that may improve mine health and safety training are suggested. Most of these research and development activities were completed later in the project. This additional work is reported in the project technical report #2 and the final report. The research reported in the present document was completed in 1984 -85. Many of the initial findings reported in this document are updated in the later project final report.

Surface mining activities disturb large tracts of land resulting in the potential for greatly increased downstream sediment loads. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 places increased emphasis on the protection of the environment from the adverse effects of surface mining operations. Surface mining activities must be planned to minimize disturbance to the hydrologic balance, erosion and sediment contributions to receiving streams. Sediment ponds must provide a sediment storage volume equal to the accumulated sediment volume from the drainage area as determined by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or other empirical methods established by the regulatory authority. It has thus become extremely important for the mining industry to secure more accurate estimates of potential erosion losses and sediment yield. Accurate estimates of sediment yield are required for the planning, design and successful operation of sediment control systems such as detention ponds and other alternative control structures and for evaluating the effectiveness of land management practices. The principal soil loss prediction procedure available for use is the LISLE. The USLE procedure is inadequate for use in predicting soil loss from surface mine regions for a number of reasons. These include: 1. The USLE was developed to estimate average average annual loss from agricultural soils. It cannot predict accurately soil loss for specific storm events. In surface mine regions a major portion of the soil loss occurs during the initial six months to one year of active mining. Accurate estimates of soil loss over short periods are thus required for the design of control structures. 2. This information circular documents the status of a laser-based guidance system to track and control the tramming maneuvers of a continuous mining machine. The work is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to develop technology for computer-assisted mining systems. The system includes stationary offboard laser-scanning sensors that report the angular coordinates of retroreflective targets on the mining machine. A microcomputer system processes the angular coordinates, determines position and heading, handles requests for data, and controls tram maneuvers of a continuous mining machine. This report describes the hardware for the sensor and computer systems and the software algorithms for continuous miner position and heading determination, closed-loop tramming, and data request handling. Improvements made to the system since previous documentation include the rewriting of the software on a stand-alone real-time microcomputer system, the implementation of real-time programming techniques, the use of a new version of the laser sensor, and the design and development of explosion-proof enclosures for the lasers and corresponding power supply.

Since 1941 the Federal Bureau of Mines has been conducting an intermit-tent program of placer and lode investigations to evaluate the potential tin resources of the western Seward Peninsula tin belt. Previous investigations were made in the Potato, Cape, Brooks (Lost River), and Ear Mountain areas. As part of this program the Bureau made a reconnaissance of reportedly tin-bearing stream gravels in areas adjacent to the previously worked tin deposits at Lost River and Potato Mountain. The objective of the reconnaissance was to determine if additional areas might be favorable for lode or placer exploration. The work was begun late in the fall of 1956 and completed during the following summer. The streams sampled were the Lost River and York Creek in the Brooks Mountain area and the Anikovik River and Kigezruk and Baituk Creeks in the York area. Samples were obtained by churn-drilling methods employing conventional placer-evaluation procedures. Holes were drilled at wide intervals at sites chosen as being representative of drainage areas rather than of individual gravel deposits. Minor to trace amounts of tin were found in the gravels of all these streams, but the highest grade was 0.35 pound of tin per cubic yard in the gravels of Lost River below the mouth of Tin Creek. Small amounts of gold were found on Baituk Creek and in one hole on the Anikovik River; the highest grade did not exceed 10 cents per cubic yard. Traces of scheelite and barite were found on York Creek, chromite was encountered in one hole on the Anikovik River, and minor amounts of titanium minerals (probably derived from basaltic intrusives) were found in the York area.

This report is the first of a series concerned with processes for producing magnesium. These reports will evaluate metallothermic, carbothermic , and electrolytic production methods, and will furnish a cost basis for comparing the processes. Areas deemed most promising for future research will be delineated for each procedure. This report presents briefly the history of the metallothermic process, and describes the operations of the Defense Plant Corp. (DPC) plants that employed the process. A hypothetical plant designed to produce 12,000 tons of magnesium per year, using ferrosilicon as a reductant, is described, and raw materials, energy, and major equipment requirements are estimated. Several process modifications are suggested for future research.

A family of personal computer programs that calculate the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The CMRR rock mass classification system provides a link between the qualitative geologists' description of coal mine roof and the quantitive mine engineers' needs for mine design roof support selection, and hazard detection. The program CMRR is a user-friendly, interactive program into which raw field data are input. A CMRR is calculated and output along with two graphic displays. The first graphic display is a plan view trap with the CMRR's displayed on a color-coded scale. The second display shows a stratigraphic section of the bolted roof interval and its resultant CMRR. In addition, a Lotus 1-2-3 worksheet, computer file BOM-CMRR.WK3, has been developed for easy storage of field data. The worksheet includes four macros that automatically calculate CMRR's, store field test data in a database format, and print a two-page report of the field data and CMRR parameters. Production of summary port; for analysis of site-specific information are readily generated using Lotus 1-2-3 software. These programs help to facilitate the engineer in utilizing the CMRR in ground control studies.

The desired specifications are used as guidelines but the possibility of their relaxation is also considered. Commercially available equipment is surveyed and found to not satisfy the guidelines. Several alternate concepts are investigated, and recommendations for further work are presented.

This report on the electrodeposition of gold and silver from cyanide solutions represents work that has occupied my time at intervals during the past 20 years. The investigation has been carried on simultaneously with my duties as professor of mining and metallurgy of the University of California. During shis long investigation I have been assisted in the details of the work by, a number of my former students, acting in turn as assistants. Particular mention in this connection is due W. H. Hilton, who graduated in 1900; C. T. Dozier, 1902; N. C. Stines, 1905; H. N. Herrick, 1907, and L. C. Uren, 1911. It is impossible to publish full details of the many thousands of experiments performed. Effort has been made to present only the essential data. Wherever possible, the results of the experiments have been expressed in diagrammatic form by curves showing the relation between the simultaneous variables of the experiments. It is necessary to show, as nearly as may be, the state of the art. This is difficult because of the meager literature on electrodeposition in the cyanide process; hence resort must be had to the specifications and claims of patents, most of which seem never to have been applied on a working scale. Such information consequently can not be taken at its face value. Expressing the essential ideas evolved in such specifications is no easy task. Clearly, in quoting from patent records it is not ·feasible to enumerate all of the specifications or the claims allowed the inventors. A statement of the chief contributions to the art in the patent cited must suffice. Legal details, of course, must be obtained from the original patent. In the study of patent literature, when one compares the ardent hopes of the inventors with the results realized from their efforts, it becomes clear that in the development of an art no one man contributes everything. Each subsequent inventor stands on the shoulders of the one who has gone before. It is only through the summation of the contributions of many inventors that the art as a whole prospers. On October 19, 1887, a British patent was granted to McArthur and Forrest for the use of dilute cyanide solutions for treating gold and silver ores. The rapid extension of this process, in various forms, all over the world, has almost revolutionized the treatment of ores containing precious metals. It is a remarkable fact, however, that long before this patent was granted there was issued, on February 5, 1867, to J. H. Rae, U. S. patent 61866, for an electrocyanide process. Thus a method of electrodeposition from cyanide solutions used for treating ores was invented 20 years before the McArthur and Forrest patent .was granted, although the process did not come into general use. On May 24, 1889, U. S. patent 403202 was granted to McArthur and Forrest for the use of zinc shavings for removing gold and silver from cyanide solutions. The use of finely divided zinc is still the standard method for recovering 'gold and silver from cyanide solutions. Since this patent was granted, many attempts have been made to replace the precipitation upon the zinc by methods of electrodeposition. It is the purpose of this report to give an outline of some of these methods, as well as to show the relative advantages and disadvantages of the zinc and the electrical methods of recovering gold and silver from cyanide solutions.

This report describes research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design and in-mine test a rapid response pneumatic fire detection system for multilevel metal mines. The relative merits of pneumatic detection are discussed in the context of typical multilevel mine layouts and environments. The Bureau's prototype system is described, with emphasis on design features that counter commonly experienced and/or perceived operating problems with pneumatic detection systems. Finally, the results of a 3-year in-mine performance evaluation of the prototype system are discussed.
