In the course of tire investigation into the causes, behavior, and control of mine fires, which the Bureau of Mines is now conducting, come attention was given to the subject of spontaneous heating. It is self-evident that the temperature of a pile of broken coal will rise if the rate of generation of heat exceeds the rate of heat dissipation and will fall if the opposite is the cane. This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change in coal seam inclination, Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in, diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, productlon to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. "INTRODUCTION The term ""friability"" as applied to coal may be defined as the physical property of coal which expresses its tendency to become reduced in size during handling as a result of such external forces as impact and attrition. Thus friability is a quantitative concept and property, and hence can only be defined in relative terms or in terms of measurement. Methods of measurement are difficult to formulate and apply because coal is anything but homogeneous in physical structure and chemical constitution. aMoreover, friability itself is a composite property obviously dependent upon a group of other specific characteristics such as cleavage, fracture, tenacity, hardness, and elasticity, which vary from coal to coal with change in rank and even between individual coals of the same rank. These characteristics affect the friability values of different coals to varying degrees, but this fact does not impair the usefulness of and the need for friability measurements.The amount of breakage or degradation in size that a coal suffers in mining, preparation, and subsequent handling depends upon its inherent friability and the severity of the handling treatment which it receives from the time it is taken from the bed until it reaches the consumer. The value of the coal to the producer and jobber depends in large measure upon these same factors--friability and severity of treatment—because the larger sizes still command a premium in the ordinary market. Although much has been accomplished by the coal-producing industry in minimizing the breakage of coal in mining and preparation, it is apparent that additional reductions in breakage must await further improvements in design of coal-handling equipment. Such improvements will result from more intensive investigations of the extent of breakage or degradation in size occasioned by specific mining and handling operations and the development and application of standardized methods of evaluating friability.The work described in this report was undertaken to assist in the development of standard methods for evaluating the friability of coal. Specifically, the work deals with a Comparison of the various methods previously proposed for estimating the friability of coal and coal products. This same objective is now being sought at a number of other institutions, both in the United States and Canada, by a committee of the American Society for Testing Materials. It is believed that by providing additional information concerning a property of coal pertinent to its increased usefulness, the work described will supplement and increase the useful of the data which long have been, and still are being, furnished by the bureau of Mines on the composition of coals of the United States."

A uniform hoisting-signal code for mines hoisting from more than one level, if adopted by all mining States, would be beneficial to employees and owners alike and should largely reduce the number of hoisting accidents. Misunderstood hoisting signals cause many shaft accidents involving injuries to men, damage to equipment, and loss of production from the resultant delay. Many of the metal-mining States have adopted codes for hoisting that are effective within the borders of that State but usually entirely different from the signal code, if any, in use in an adjoining State. For many years safety engineers have recognized this lack of uniformity as a distinct hazard, but a uniform code has never been adopted by the States or by the mining industry in those States that have not incorporated signal codes in their mining laws or mining regulations.

This report is the 24th in a series summarizing research on coal and related investigations3 by the Bureau of Mines. The coal programs of the Bureau of Mines include a wide range of theoretical and applied studies--such as fundamental studies of coal structure and properties, the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and work toward more effective processing and utilization of coal. The scope of these programs is indicated, in topical outline, by the table of contents. These investigations are integrated into a broad but coordinated effort to develop information on coal that will benefit the coal mining industry and the coal consumer while promoting the wise conservation and utilization of our national coal resources. Any attempt to summarize in one volume the progress in all of the program areas indicated must necessarily be limited to a brief review of developments, without detailed reporting of the data. However, while the brief discussion in each section will present only the highlights of the Bureau's work during the year, details of many of the operations or investigations described here can be found in the publications cited throughout the text. Other work, reported here for the first time, will be covered in greater detail in later publications.

Multiple versions of an educational message can reach a diverse population more effectively than a single version. For instance, some workers are trained in formal classrooms while others are self-taught. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has developed multiple versions of a hearing loss simulator (an interactive software package, a Web-based module, and an electronic slide show) to show how a single set of information can be readily adapted to different delivery methods. The three versions of the simulator were developed with a minimum of effort and expense compared to a single, less-flexible version. The interactive software is best for training sessions led by a hearing conservation professional, the Web pages are best suited for an individual worker, and the slide show is best for a small, more-generalized, training class. This paper will describe additional advantages and disadvantages of different delivery systems and will show what considerations are helpful in designing content that can be readily adapted to alternate presentations.

Many bituminous coal-mining companies have inaugurated extensive safety programs, but the failure to have approved or permissible equipment or safe practice in only one part of a mine has resulted in disaster. The necessity of using only equipment bearing the U. S. Bureau of Mines approval plate is emphasized by the fact that many accidents are the direct result of carelessness on the part of trusted employees using non-permissible equipment. A concrete example is found in the case of an explosion on October 26, 1926, in a mine in the Pittsburgh district, Pennsylvania. Story of the Explosion At about 10 o'clock on the night of the explosion an examination was made in No. 2 butt left and parallel off No. 14 north, and was found to be clear of dangerous accumulations of gas. (See figure). Several hours later a crew of two men brought a self-propelling rock-dusting machine within 50 feet of the face of No. 2 butt parallel before they examined for gas. The machine operator found an accumulation of explosive gas about 13 inches from the roof. He began to wave his arms thoroughly mixing the gas and air. Undoubtedly a highly explosive mixture was created, and as the men attempted to run the machine back to fresh air as explosion occurred.

The tests reported in this paper were made in the East Texas field in the summer and fall of 1932 as a part of the Bureau of Mines study of the operation of flowing wells and reservoir performance; and to determine, if possible, the minimum reservoir pressure necessary to produce the wells in this field by natural flow through different sizes of flow strings. The minimum reservoir pressure that would be required to maintain natural flow through 2 1/2-inch tubing was determined experimentally for the existing energy conditions in the East Texas field. With the present available data, however, it 'is impossible to predict accurately or to determine by calculation the necessary energy requirements for maintaining the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures under all conditions. Although some valuable data were obtained which seem to have application to the solution of problems involving vertical flow, this important research of the petroleum industry is so involved that more study of the complicating factors influencing the flow of oil-gas mixtures through vertical pipes is required. Versluys4 has presented a mathematical analysis of the vertical flow of oil and gas mixtures which covers the fundamental theories of the problem-although, as he points cut, there are factors, particularly friction, slippage, and solubility of the gas in the oil that must be mown or determined experimentally before the equations he has developed can be applied to actual

This report (arid related appendices) provides a description of the functional design specifications, engineering design specifications, and program of instruction for development of a training system for dragline equipment operators. Based upon a task analysis and training system analysis prepared under Phase I, Phase II efforts expanded upon and refined the functional design specifications. The training hardware components have been developed to a point shy of system fabrication. A detailed outline of the porgram of instruction and content sequence has been prepared. The objective of the training system described in this report is to provide new operators of dragline equipment with the requisite skills and knowledge to assure cost-effective development and an adequate supply of our human resources.

Fifteen shots of three explosives with charge weights of 0.52, 1.1, 3.1, and 5.1 kilograms were fired in a pond to study the seismic effects of detonating explosives in water. Shock pressures and bubble periods were measured with pressure transducers in the water. Vibrations were measured on land in three orthogonal directions with particle velocity gages. Statistical tests indicated that a charge weight exponent of 0.43 best scaled the data. While shock pressures and bubble periods showed considerable differences in explosive performances, the amplitudes of ground vibrations showed less difference, and one prediction equation was therefore derived to estimate vibration amplitudes from all the explosives.

These investigations were conducted to determine conditions for recovery of nickel and copper from Funter Bay, Alaska, sulfide ore and recovery of nickel from nickel-silicate ore, Nickel Mountain, Riddle, Oreg. Samples of Funter Bay cupriferous and nickeliferous pyrrhotite ore, were treated by beneficiation, roasting, electric smelting of roasted are for matte production, chlorination, leaching, and sulfatizing roasting with subsequent leaching. Funter Bay and Nickel Mountain ores were smelted together to produce matte. Total sulfide flotation, followed by magnetic separation of the tailings to recover entrained nickel-bearing pyrrhotite, resulted in the highest nickel recovery in beneficiation tests on Funter Bay are. Overall beneficiation resulted in recovery of 98.5 percent of the copper and 95.4 percent of the nickel in the concentrate that contained 3.5 percent copper and 1.7 percent nickel.

Amenability studies were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines on an electrooxidation technique for the extraction of mercury from cinnabar ores, particularly those that are too low in grade to be furnaced or retorted economically. Oxidation was accomplished by electrolysis of the ore while slurried with brine. Mercury was dissolved through the formation of the soluble tetrachloro mercury complex, HgC142-. Mercury extractions ranged from 90 to 98 percent in 4 to 6 hours of processing time when tests were made on eight different types of cinnabar ores containing from 0.7 to 18 pounds mercury per ton ore. Salt concentration was varied from 4 to 10 weight-percent depending on whether Pb02 anodes and iron cathodes were used or whether graphite was used for both electrodes. Power consumption ranged from 17 to 64 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore treated. Ninety-nine percent of the mercury was recovered from pregnant solutions by precipitation on an active metal such as zinc, followed by distillation of the resulting amalgam at 600° C.

This Bureau of Mines report is concerned with the testing procedures for evaluating clays, shales, and slates for lightweight aggregates using the rotary-kiln method of production. To meet the increasing demand for light-weight concrete, rapid, accurate methods for appraising raw materials for light-weight aggregate are needed. Preliminary tests were made on samples of clay, shale, and slate, using laboratory equipment, and the data were used to establish operating conditions for pilot-plant-size rotary-kiln tests. Lightweight concrete was made from the processed aggregates and the properties determined. The results show that the laboratory data can be used to guide rotary-kiln testing, and, with the exception of sampling, a complete appraisal of a raw material for lightweight aggregate concrete can be made in 3 days by the methods described in this report.

Many injuries are caused each year by rock falls in coal mines. Most of these injuries are not caused by major roof collapses, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate top or roof skin. Various surface controls are used in mines to control this surface rock. One that has been found to be very effective is roof screening. Depending on the size of the screen, roof coverage approaching 100%can be achieved. Many mines are reluctant to use screen for primary skin control because of additional costs of time and materials, but others are having great success at both controlling costs and surface rock. Data is presented from two mines that show a dramatic reduction in roof skin injuries when screening is used. Much of this success is due to innovations in roof bolting machines. Four case studies of roof screen experience are presented along with associated costs of materials, impact on bolting advance rates, and potential ergonomic risks. The effects of roof screening on skin control and safety are also included. Finally, this paper will provide information about features of different roof bolting machines that affect production and safety.

VOLUME III The objective of Volume III of this report is to provide a concise review of six major types of legal constraints, controls, and regulations on surface coal mining in the United States, as of January, 1976. At the same time, an attempt is made to format the details of federal and state exploration, mining, and reclamation regulations such that point-by-point comparisons can be made and updated as revisions occur. Thus, Volume III should provide both an executive overview and a user's manual of legal controls of surface coal mining.

The goal of the Bureau of Mines diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions and minimize the risk of fires and explosions caused by the use of diesel- powered equipment in underground mines. This program has led to a fundamental understanding of the problems and to solutions that allow diesel equipment to be used safely and effectively. This volume contains reports of the presentations made at the Bureau Technology Transfer Seminar on Diesels in Underground &fines given in Louisville, KY, and Denver, CO, on April 21 and April 23, 1987. It also contains three reports of related research, not presented at the seminar, which highlight the significant achievements of a joint US.-Canadian research program on diesel emission control technology for underground mines. Topics covered in this volume include discussions of industrial hygiene problems associated with the use of diesels, accident statistics, fire and explosion control systems, measurement of diesel pollutants, emission control techniques including engine maintenance, fuel additives, diesel particulate filters, and ventilation of diesel sections. An alternative to diesel power, the hydrogen-powered mine vehicle, is also described.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have developed adaptive process control systems in which genetic algorithms (GA's) are used to augment fuzzy logic controllers (FLC's). GA's are search algorithms that rapidly locate near-optimum solutions to a wide spectrum of problems by loosely modeling the search procedures of natural genetics. FLC's are rule-based systems that efficiently manipulate a problem environment by modeling the "rule-of-thumb" strategy used in human decision-making. Together, GA's and FLC's include all of the capabilities necessary to produce powerful, efficient, and robust adaptive control systems. To perform efficiently, such control systems require a control element to manipulate the problem environment, an analysis element to recognize changes in the problem environment, and an adaptive element to adjust to the changes in the problem environment. The control system also employs a computer simulation of the problem environment. Details of an overall adaptive control system are discussed. A specific laboratory acid-base pH system is used to demonstrate the ideas presented; all results are from the physical laboratory system and not from a computer simulation.
