This paper, describing the mining operations at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods. Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 to over 100 feet in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sublevel stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

An investigation was made of the distances over which sympathetic detonation of ammonium nitrate (AN) and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) might be expected. Large-scale gap tests used two types of AN-FO donor charges in three sizes with AN, both at ambient and elevated temperatures, and AN-FO acceptor charges. Donor sizes were varied to test the validity of a scaling law commonly used in quantity distance tables. The up-and-down experimental design was chosen to determine the 50-percent initiation point efficiently. The acceptor charges were instrumented to indicate initiation and to determine detonation velocity. Other electronic techniques for measuring the rate of growth, stability of detonation, and detonation pressures were employed. Air shock and fragment velocities between charges were measured by electronic and photographic methods, and determination of side-on air-blast pressures and impulse duration were made for about half the shots. Separation distances between donor and acceptor were found to be larger than anticipated both for the AN and the AN-FO. With AN-FO acceptors and a 16-gage steel faced donor, one initiation occurred at a separation of 53 feet or nearly 16-charge diameters; with AN, initiation occurred at 4 to 5-1/2- charge diameters.

Continuous experimentation utilizing a 3- by 36 - foot rotary kiln was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of simultaneous induration and reduction of magnetic taconite concentrate . Lignite , or lignite - anthracite mixtures , and green magnetite pellets (64.2 percent Fe , dry basis ) were heated in a rotary kiln to about 2,100 ° F. After separation from excess reductant , the product pellets were found to be highly reduced and acceptably hard . A total of 140 tons of prereduced pellets with an average Fe content of 79.0 percent was produced at Minneapolis and smelted in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace at Bruceton , Pa . Two additional supplies of prereduced pellets were obtained from The Steel Company of Canada , Ltd. , Hamilton , Ontario , which contained 83.8 and 91.3 percent Fe , respectively . Smelting of prereduced pellets was compared with that of unreduced pellets obtained from The Hilton Mines , Shawville , Quebec , and from the Erie Mining Co. , Hoyt Lakes , Minn . Blast furnace tests established that a substantial decrease in coke rates and higher production result from the use of prereduced pellets .

"The Keystone and St. George properties are in the so-called Johnson Camp area and adjoin a property that in recent years has become a steady producer of low-to medium-grade copper-zinc ores. The Keystone Copper Co. was active intermittently from 1908 to 1938 and during 1926 to 1937 produced a recorded 1,100 tons of 5 percent copper ore. There is no evidence that ore has been produced from the St. George property.In the Johnson Camp area both igneous and sedimentary rocks ranging in age from pre-Cambrian to Quaternary are exposed. The ore bodies are in the Paleozoic rocks and occur principally in the Abrigo formation, which is composed mainly of limestones and shales. The rocks of the productive zones are metamorphosed and are cut by systems of fractures and faults. Chalcopyrite and sphalerite, the principal ore minerals, replace altered limestones to form deposits locally called mantos and chimneys.Investigation of the Keystone and St. George deposits by the Bureau of Mines included topographical and geological mapping of the surface and the underground workings and diamond drilling from the surface. A total of 10,067.8 feet was drilled in 22 holes. The drilling started November 13, 1947, and was completed August 19, 1948.This report records factual information obtained during the course of the investigation."

This report shows the feasibility of predicting drillability, analytically, by using regression analysis techniques. The approach is new in diamond-drilling research. Further, the study shows that this technique may be of value to drill manufacturers and others in mathematically delineating performance characteristics of new drills in specific rock types. Another application might be the prediction of penetration speeds in extraterrestrial material based on the physical properties of the materials as samples become available. Prediction equations for penetration rates are presented for 9 rocks drilled in the laboratory and for 20 rocks drilled under field conditions. The prediction equations are based on drill operating parameters and on characteristics of the rock penetrated. No single physical property appeared consistently in the best predictor equations, and all the physical properties were found to be highly correlated with each other.

The performance of the world economy improved significantly in 1984. Real world output!/ grew 4.3% (compared with 2.6% in 19831, the highest since the 4.4% increase recorded in 1978 (table 1). The output of industrial nations rose 4.9%, while that of the developing nations rose 3.7%. The United States and Japan had the largest increases in output of the major industrial nations, with respective increases of 6.8% and 5.8% (table 2). The components of real output with the most significant growth in the industrial countries were gross fixed investment (9.2%), consumer expenditure (3.1%), and public consumption (2.5%) (table 1). Industrial output, as measured by industrial production indices, has returned to about the 1980 level for most of the major industrial nations (table 2). Exceptions to this were industrial production in Japan and the United States; Japan's industrial production rose steadily throughout the 5-yr period and is now more than 16% above the 1980 level, and the industrial production index for the United States reached 11 1.2 (1980=100.0). Real total domestic demand grew at 8.7% in the United States, more than double the rate of Japan, which, at 4.0%, had the second-largest growth. Average demand for all industrial countries was up 5.1%. During 1984 the U.S. dollar showed great strength on international markets, contributing to large current-dollar negative net exports of goods and services and even larger negative net exports of the merchandise sector. While growing U.S. imports helped spread the benefits of the recovery, they also led to a widening of current account imbalances and growing trade tensions throughout the world.3/, 4/

This report describes a process for recovering chromium and other metals from superalloy scrap. Part I contains the results of laboratory scale experiments which were conducted to test a complex flowsheet utilizing a wide range of extractive metallurgical operations. The novel basis for the process is the formation of a sulfide matte in which chromium is concentrated in a discrete chromium sulfide phase. Mineral processing and hydrometallugical procedures are used to separate chromium sulfide from the other matte constituents. The products of the process are a chromium-nickel alloy suitable for reuse in the superalloy industry, electrolytic nickel, electrolytic cobalt, and an iron-molybdenum residue. Recovery of the principal elements contained in the scrap are chromium(Cr)-93 percent, nickel(Ni)-99 percent, cobalt(Co)-96 percent, molybdenum(Mo)-92 percent. Part II encompasses a preliminary engineering design of a pilot plant capable of treating 100 pounds(lb) of superalloy scrap per hour. Also included is an economic analysis of the operation of the pilot plant.

This report, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the Blind Shaft Borer (BSB) shaft sinking system and an alternative modified BSB design concept in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the two systems was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the BSB systems with conventional shaft sinking was made on the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the component operations of the two BSB systems was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that both BSB systems are safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft sinking operations could be reduced by over 30%, on the average, with the use of the original BSB system, and by an average of about 10% with the modified BSB. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of these systems include better fire suppression systems, improved man haulage systems and more compact hydraulics. An operational safety manual was also developed for the modified BSB system.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to obtain hydrometallurgical information on the dissolution of mercury sulfides from ores, flotation concentrates, and pure mercuric sulfides. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and evaluate the resulting data. Studies demonstrated that cinnabar is readily soluble in sodium sulfide, partly soluble in potassium sulfide, and essentially insoluble in ammonium sulfide. Additions of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide to sodium sulfide solutions increased mercury extraction slightly; when either was added to potassium sulfide or ammonium sulfide solutions, mercury extraction was equal to that of sodium sulfide. Tests at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center showed that sodium sulfide would completely dissolve chemically pure mercuric sulfide, more than 95 percent of the cinnabar in 5-percent mercury flotation concentrates, and 60 to 90 percent of the cinnabar in low-grade ores. The double-leach tests showed that potassium sulfide would dissolve over 90 percent of the arsenic in mercury-arsenic products and 1 to 10 percent of the mercury; then sodium sulfide-hydroxide solutions would dissolve 80 to 90 percent of the remaining mercury and 5 to 10 percent of the arsenic.

This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.'s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. A laboratory and a pilot-plant-scale investigation has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines to examine possible sources of nitride defects in the production of magnesium-reduced titanium sponge. The production of alpha-stabilized nitride inclusions in hot-rolled titanium plate from air contamination of sponge during its manufacture has been experimentally demonstrated. Magnesium-reduced sponge prepared from air-contaminated magnesium or when contaminated by an air leak during reduction, vacuum distillation, or inert gas sweep, shows very large variations in nitrogen content. Refractory nitrides, delta TiN and epsilon Ti2N have been identified in this sponge. The highest incidence of inclusions resulted from sponge that was reduced by air-contaminated magnesium and from sponge subjected to air contamination during the vacuum distillation cycle and during helium sweep. Air contamination of sponge during the reduction cycle was not nearly as effective in producing inclusions. Tests showed that color and texture may not be reliable criteria for locating defects during sponge inspection. Maintenance of good vacuum-tight integrity, filtration of molten magnesium prior to charging into the reduction retort, and mechanical attrition of sponge to pulverize and disperse nitrides are suggested as practices to lower inclusion incidence in commercial titanium ingots.

The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. Analytical procedures are described for the quantitative determination of 16 elements (As, Ba, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, TI, and Zn) and 7 ionic species (NH4, C032-, CI-, F-, NO3-, P043-, SO42-), identification of major and minor mineral components, and measurement of physical properties associated with manganese nodules and nodule processing reject waste materials. Compound identification methods discussed include X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, selective area electron diffraction, and optical and reflected light microscopy. Methods for elemental analysis include atomic absorption spectrophotometry, inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy, neutron activation analysis, fluorescent X-ray spectrography, and ion chromatography. Thermal gravimetric analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, ion specific electrodes, and standard wet chemical procedures are briefly discussed. Physical properties determined in manganese nodule materials include grain size distribution, specific gravity, triaxial shear, permeability, maximum density, Atterberg limits, and slurry density. The results of a round-robin analysis of an ammonia process waste material and manganese nodule standards demonstrate the applicability of the discussed methods. Tests discussed for the evaluation of the waste materials for disposal options include the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) EP toxicity test, the ASTM shake extraction test, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers EPA seawater elutriant test.

The Bureau of Mines performed a study of the availability of cobalt from market economy countries. The study entailed the detailed analysis of 97 deposits which contain 3.9 billion lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level; in 94 of the deposits cobalt is recovered as a byproduct, and in 3 it is considered the primary product. Since 97 pet of all recoverable cobalt is derived as a byproduct from copper and nickel deposits, the report focused on these two sources. At an assumed market price of $0.89flb for copper, $3.45/lb for nickel, $475/tr 021 for platinum, and $7/lb for cobalt, 1,330 million lb of cobalt at the demonstrated level are potentially available. This total includes 1,105 million lb of cobalt from copper properties, 190 million lb from nickel, 29 million lb from platinum, and 6 million lb from primary cobalt. This analysis indicates that the production cost for 589 million lb of cobalt can be totally covered by the revenues obtained from the other metals produced. The impacts of increases in capital investment and energy costs are also discussed.

This report presents the results of a cooperative study between BethEnergy Mines Inc., Ebensburg, PA, a central Pennsylvania coal mining company, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to investigate longwall development entry roof instability. In-mine mapping of geologic and deformational features was conducted to reveal the major ground control problems encountered during gate road development. In addition, mining-induced pillar load monitoring was used to indicate development loading on variously dimensioned gate road pillars and to determine if pillar yielding occurred. Finally, visual observations of a variety of roof control methods were used to determine the most effective support elements for controlling cutter roof failure.

Design plans and detailed cost estimates of mining and treating ore from Maggie Canyon deposit by two alternative methods which can be used in the event of a sudden need to exploit this resource are given . Lower costs are estimated for the operation employing oil - emulsion flotation . The total capital investment required for this operation is estimated at $ 11,750,000 . Assuming an 85 percent recovery in mining , 55.6 pct of the manganese in the ore reserve would report in 153,333 tons of ferromanganese containing 75 pct manganese . The production cost for the 5 - year operation would be about $ 245 per ton of ferromanganese . The total annual operating cost would be approximately $ 7.5 million , distributed , in pct , as follows : Mining 11.9 , milling 24.4 , sintering 9.9 , smelting 47.2 , hauling ore and sinter 2.8 , and general offices 3.8 . Recovery and costs are both higher for the operation employing dithionate leaching . In this operation the required investment is about $ 17,220,000 . Manganese recovery would be 67.6 pct in 186,160 tons of ferromanganese . Production cost would be about $ 284 per ton of ferromanganese . The total annual operating cost would be about $ 10,575,000 , distributed , in pct , as follows : Mining 8.4 , milling 44.4 , sintering 7.4 , smelting 34.7 , hauling ore and sinter 1.3 , and general offices 3.8 . Potential process modifications might reduce the operating cost of the first operation by as much as 7 pct and that of the second operation by as much as 9.5 pct , but exploitation of the deposit by the techniques studied is not economical today .

The objective of this program was to determine by laboratory experiments the kinetics and mechanics of the reactions that produce acid in coal mine drainage. The program was divided into three phases: In Phase I, five coil mines, representative of Appalachian coal mines, were chosen for sampling and an experimental design was identified suited to accomplish the program objectives. In Phase II, the five mines were sampled and test protocols applied. The results showed most pyrite weathering to be based on oxidation in the presence of water. Iron bacteria, especially Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, catalyzed the rate of pyrite weathering by a factor of three. An increase in initial iron concentration in a system that modeled the nine environment acted to inhibit bacterial catalysis of weathering. In Phase III, five tailings piles were sampled and the material obtained was used to evaluate this method of bacterial catalysis inhibition. The evaluation verified method effectiveness; inhibition of over 80% of the release of weathering products was observed.

The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advances toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the system technology required to create a healthier and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.
