In general terminology, the West Texas Permian Basin companies the area south of the Texas Panhandle and west of the Bend Arch or Central Basin region. It is outlined more definitely by geologists however, as that area underlain by the south half of the Permian Salt Basin4/ and includes Scurry, Mitchell, Sterling, Howard, Glasscock, Reagan, Crockett, Upton, Midland, Martin, Gaines, Andrews, rotor, Crane, Pecos, Ward, Winkler, and Loving Counties in Texas, and.. Lea and Eddy Counties in New Mexico. The oil fields of the area, of which more than 70 have been discovered, are shown in fire 1. Approximately 4,200 producing oil wells have been drilled in these fields. Oil has been produced from limestones and dolomites of Permian age in most of the fields in the West Texas Permian Basin. Some of the fields produced oil from sandstone beds above the limestone, and in two fields production has been found below the limestone in formations of Ordovician age.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among operators of mobile equipment used in mining and construction. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy mobile equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of ingress/egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. Five hundred and eighty six operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

Until now there has been controversy about which tests should be performed to diagnose early Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). Initial screening questions, especially about tingling and numbness, routinely given to patients prior to examinations proved to be a very important tool in the diagnostic process1, 4. However, standardized tests that are simple, quick, valid and reliable are needed to support a diagnosis of HAVS. Purpose: To find the most valid and reliable tests to diagnose HAVS. Material and Methods Five major tests were performed on Group I and Group II. Group I: Control group of 12 volunteers including students, nurses, secretaries and physicians with no history of using vibrating tools (age 20 to 50y, mean age 38.5y; 5male, 5 female.) Group II: 12 workers (age 17 to 65y, mean age 39y; 9 male, 3 female) were sent by a local trade union with a history of using vibrating power tools on their jobs for varying amounts of time (mean 12.2y, from 0.5 to 35y.) Pre-enrollment survey showed that each had more than 4 complaints commonly associated with use of vibrating tools (including numbness, tingling, weakness, pain, finger color or nail changes, temperature change, and difficulty moving.) 1. Sensory nerve conductive tests: Amplitude and nerve conductive velocity (NCV) were evaluated. 2. Cold Stress-Temperature recovery time tests were done on the index finger of the dominant hand following these steps: Confirm water bath is within 4-5º C. Place the finger temperature probe on pad of the index finger of the dominant hand. Record temperature every 15 seconds. Place subject’s hand in the cold- water bath for exactly five minutes. Record temperature every 15 seconds for ten minutes. 3. Blood test: Venous blood was taken by a 21-gauge needle with the yellow collection tube adapter. S-ICAM, Sera Thrombomodulin, Norepinephrine levels were evaluated by Henderson Research Centre, Canada. 4. Finger Sensory Evaluation: Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test and 2-point discrimination tests were performed on bilateral fingers. 5. Digital blood pressure test: blood pressure was measured in bilateral index fingers. Results 1. Median nerve sensory conductive amplitude from palm to wrist : GI: mean 96 ± 31µm; GII: mean 43± 30µm; for dominant hands. GI vs GII: P<0.001

The machine-mounted continuous respirable dust monitor (MMCRDM) is a fixed-location area sampling device developed for possible use at the working face of an underground coal mine. This device, based on proprietary technology known as the tapered element oscillating microbalance, has evolved over the past eight years through a cooperative effort of the former Bureau of Mines, MSHA, and the Rupprecht & Patashnick Company in Albany, NY. The capability to measure respirable coal mine dust levels on a continuous basis, rather than depending solely on periodic samples obtained from the traditional coal mine dust samplers, has been a goal in the mining industry for nearly two decades. Recently, an extensive series of laboratory and underground tests was conducted by NIOSH with the cooperation of MSHA and coal operators to test the performance of the MMCRDM In preliminary laboratory testing, the MMCRDM seemed to work well. However, in every underground test, when compared to reference samplers placed close to the inlet, the MMCRDM failed to meet the 25% accuracy criterion specified in the contract under which it was developed. Two reasons explain this failure: First, in most tests the bias (the relative discrepancy between the average MMCRDM concentration and the average reference sampler concentration) was too great. Second, the variability of the samplers used for reference comparison was too large. Finally, the underground testing of the MMCRDMs showed that they are quite unreliable at this stage of development. In the majority of mine tests, no more than 10 shifts of data were taken before the MMCRDM failed to function properly. Major breakdowns, requiring the return of the MMCRDM to the factory for repairs, occurred on average every 28 days. To be considered mine-worthy, MMCRDM reliability must be substantially improved. In This Chapter [Measuring the gas emission from the coal Methane at the top of the silo Methane at the load-out area and Actions taken after a silo explosion] Methane accumulations in coal silos have resulted in the occasional silo explosion. These can be quite violent and dangerous because coal dust adds to the strength of the blast. However, with the appropriate precautionary measures, methane accumulations in silos can be greatly reduced. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations at 30 CFR2 77.201 require that the methane content in the air of any coal silo be maintained below 1.0 vol %.3 Also, MSHA requires that methane tests be conducted before any electrical equipment is energized, unless a continuous monitor capable of deenergizing the electrical equipment is used.4 Measuring the gas emission from the coal. The first necessary step in dealing with silo methane issues is to measure the gas emission from the coal going into the silo. Such measure-ments allow one to estimate the silo ventilation needs and permit a comparison with the methane controls used at other mines that have similar gas levels. The gassiness of the coal can be measured by taking conveyor belt grab samples.5 Matta et al. [1978] measured the gas emission from conveyor belt grab samples using a simple desorption test. To conduct the test, they collected several grab samples of coal, weighing a few pounds each, from the conveyor belt entering the silo.6 They then sealed the coal into an airtight sample container that was equipped with a valve and short hose along with a pressure gauge. Every few hours they opened the valve and bled the emitted gas into a water-filled graduated cylinder that had been inverted and placed in a pan of water (Figure 11–1). The results are shown in Figure 11–2.

It is apparent that coal will play an increasingly important role in satisfying the nation&apos;s energy requirements for the remainder of this century. Both deep mining and surface mining will be practiced to develop known U.S. coal reserves, but until significant improvements in the productivity of deep mining emerge, surface mining is likely to be predominant. This report addresses the problems of coal extraction and surface mine reclamation in the 11-state Midwestern coal resource region, where surface stripping of high-sulfur, bituminous coal has been a well-developed industry for most of this century. Midwestern coal markets have declined in recent years. In part this is a result of widespread conversions to more convenient and (apparently) economical liquid and gaseous fuels, but the decline in Midwestern coal use is also attributable to the impact of current air pollution control regulations that prohibit emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter. A part of the regional demand for Midwestern coal has been transferred to the Northern Great Plains where extensive low-sulfur coal reserves are currently being developed.

Underground coal mining is the most hazardous industrial occupation in the United States.. Haulage accidents in underground coal mines contribute substantially to the occupational hazards of this type of work. In an effort to improve mine safety, a completely hydraulic transport system has been designed to move coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The capital investment for the hydraulic haulage system is great, and the size of the mine developed for this study is large. Mine production for the conventional haulage mine is 1. 1 million tons of clean coal per year, while the hydraulic haulage mine will produce over 1.6 million tons of clean coal per year. Safety statistics for a number of mines of this size are shown.

Mining operations were in progress at the Shawangunk mine near Summitville, Sullivan County, N. Y. as early as 1843 and again as late as 1918. Difficulty in effecting mechanical separation of sphalerite and galena was the primary reason for abandonment by various operators. The Bureau of Mines investigated this mine by diamond drilling, sampling, and performing beneficiation tests. The investigation included the construction of 1.25 miles of access road and the completion of 6,526 feet of core drilling in 24 holes. In addition, 151 samples were taken in the mine. The investigation proved an extension of ore contiguous to the old mine workings and resulted in the discovery of another ore shoot at depth. The ore occurs as fissure filling in a fault zone and contains concentrations of zinc and lead sulfides with minor dissemination of chalcopyrite in a quartz gangue. Metallurgical tests indicate that the ore can be concentrated by selective flotation.

Ethical concerns of in-vivo procedures and poor repeatability of non-invasive techniques have been major limitations in estimating vibration-induced spine loads through experiments. The biodynamic models of seated human body exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) have evolved for defining the frequency-weightings, enhancement of human responses to WBV, and developing anthropodynamic manikins for seating assessment activities. The widely reported mechanical-equivalent models, solely based on through- or to-the-body biodynamic response functions, do not seem to resemble the biomechanical structure and do not yield information on the dynamic loading and deflections of segments of concern, namely the spine. On the other hand, biomechanical models with representative anatomical structure and anthropometry are being attempted to simulate segmental movements and the coupling effects, using Finite elements (FE) or multi-body dynamics (MBD) formalisms, which could provide important insights into the inter-vertebral forces [1]. While the FE models pose considerable complexities primarily related to characteristics of the bio-material properties, the MBD technique with discrete rigid bodies offers the flexibility to create multi-segment models with relative ease and lower computational cost. In this study, a preliminary multibody dynamic model of a seated human body exposed to WBV along the vertical direction is formulated using MSC/ADAMS software. The model validity is demonstrated by comparing selected responses with the available measured data. Methods The seated human is represented by nine rigid body segments, including: head, neck, thoracic and lumbar torso, pelvis, hands and thighs, as shown in Fig. 1. The rigid bodies are coupled through different rotational and translational joints, some of which are force elements to allow vertical translations and sagittal–plane rotations of the segments. The measurements of transmission of vertical vibration through-the-body generally require subjects to voluntarily maintain a vertical head position to reduce head-accelerometer orientation errors. The head–neck–shoulder joint is thus considered to be rigid. The shoulders are assumed to be rigidly attached to the thoracic segment. The torso is made up of three (upper, middle and lower) segments connected by visco-elastic revolute and translational joints to permit relative pitch and vertical motions. The forces and torques generated by the joints are derived assuming linear stiffness and damping properties, which were identified from published studies. The pelvis is connected to the rigid seat by similar elements representing the visco-elastic properties of the buttock tissues. The two thighs are rigidly connected to the pelvis, while the segment masses are chosen from the anthropometric data for the 50th percentile male subject. Changes in the 1980 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1979, were of a mixed nature. Output of garnet and special silica stone products increased in both tonnage and value during the year, while emery and tripoli-type materials production decreased in both tonnage and value. The reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material-fused alumina and alumina-zirconia, silicon car-bidet and metallic iron and steel shot and grit-also decreased for 1980. Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (?water box?) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 percent reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

In 1981 the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Pyramid RARE II area (No. 5023) covering 23,500 acres (9,500 ha) of E1 Dorado National Forest and 7,900 acres (3,200 ha) of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (fig. 1). The Bureau of Mines investigation did not reveal mineral deposits in the area. Samples taken from silicified and limonite-stained metasedimentary rocks and aplite dikes were void of precious or base metals or uranium. Placer samples from stream gravels contained no gold values. Molybdenite occurs in quartz stringers within quartz monzonite near Grass Lake, adjacent to the area; no extension; were found in the area.

This report3/ gives the reconnaissance of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Churchill County, Nev., made in the fall of 1938 and spring of 1938 All of the mining districts in the county were visited, but no attempt has been made to include all the mines and prospects within the area; inclusion or omission of a property in this paper has no bearing on its merits, The report gives the situation of the various districts, mineral production, and ownership of properties; describes the ore deposit, mines, and prospects; contains information on past and current activity; and includes other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The various district, were named when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When established, the districts embraced large areas n without well- defined borders, so that the names have little geographical significance.

ISO8662-4, “Hand-held portable power tools - Measurement of vibrations at the handle - Part 4: Grinders” is under revision. The new revision shall harmonize ISO 20643 “Mechanical vibration - Hand-held and hand-guided machinery - Principles for evaluation of vibration emission” which, among others, requires measurements in three directions and declared values related to the upper quartile of real-use vibration. To get the most suitable test method, a round robin test was made for evaluation of the two test methods proposed by the ad-hoc group working with this standard revision. Methods Seven laboratories measured the vibration from four grinders of different sizes, with and without autobalancing units. The laboratories come from universities, health & safety laboratories and grinder manufacturers. Two measurement methods are evaluated with respect to repeatability and reproducibility: 1. Grinding on a well-defined mild steel bar with depressed center wheels according to detailed test instructions. The test sequence starts and ends with 10 seconds of running the grinder in the air, when measuring the unbalance contribution to the vibration coming from the unbalance of the grinding wheel. Between these runs the average vibration during 60 seconds of grinding is measured. Three operators do five grinding tests per grinder. 2. Measurements using an aluminum unbalance disc similar to the one defined in ISO8662-4. Each operator runs the grinder four times, between each run the unbalance is moved 180 degrees to avoid variations caused by the play between the test wheel and the spindle. The averaging time is 10 seconds. Each grinder is tested by three operators. Repeatability is the spread within a lab between operators and over short time period for one machine and reproducibility is the spread between laboratories and over longer time periods for one machine. Instrumentation and transducer location are chosen according to ISO8662-4 and circulated test instructions. Results Both the repeatability and reproducibility is poor for the real grinding test, see figure 1. The coefficient of variation for repeatability is approximately 40% higher for the grinding test and the coefficient of reproducibility is 60% higher for the grinding test than for the unbalance disc test.

A diesel particulate matter analyzer capable of direct, real-time measurement of engine exhaust particulate is necessary to effectively institute source control technology currently being used on diesel equipment and to ensure that the control measures are working. To investigate the potential of a differential pressure monitor to measure diesel particulate matter in undiluted exhaust, samples were collected from three different diesel engines-Kubota, Isuzu, and Deutz-running under 12 different RPM and load scenarios. These measurements were compared to elemental carbon concentrations in the sampled exhaust as determined by using the NIOSH 5040 analytical method. Elemental carbon is used as a surrogate measurement for diesel particulate matter. The results of the two data sets were then compared using a linear regression analysis. The coefficient of determination (or R2) was calculated to be 0.98, 0.94, and 0.74 for the Kubota, Deutz, and Isuzu engines, respectively. R2 values of this magnitude indicate that this method can be successful in estimating elemental carbon emissions in the engines tested. In addition, for replicate samples, the coefficient of variation ranged from 7.1% to 10.2% with an average of 8.5%. These data indicate that this method could prove useful to mechanics as they work to maintain engines and DPM control technologies.

Annoyance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain have been reported during prolonged exposures to propulsion-generated vibration in military propeller aircraft1. The objective of this study was to determine the vibration mitigation properties of selected seat cushions and the effects of occupant seating posture during exposure to higher frequency multi-axis vibration associated with military propeller aircraft. Methods A Navy E-2C Hawkeye crew seat was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). Six seat pan cushion configurations were tested during exposure to an E-2C vibration signal collected in the field1. Seat pan cushions 1 – 5 were used with the original E-2C seat back cushion. Cushion configuration 6 included seat pan cushion 5 with a prototype seat back cushion. Triaxial accelerometer pads were mounted onto the seat pan and seat back cushions to measure the vibration entering the human. Data were collected for seven subjects seated upright with their backs in contact with the seat (back-on) and not in contact with the seat (back-off). Spectral analysis techniques were used to analyze data at the two dominant frequencies associated with the propulsion system (propeller rotation frequency (PRF) ~18.5 Hz, and blade passage frequency (BPF) ~73.5 Hz). Overall accelerations were also calculated between 1 and 80 Hz. Vibration Total Values (VTVs) were calculated using the weighted seat pan and seat back (back-on only) accelerations and compared to the comfort reactions given in ISO 2631-1: 19972. Results In general, the highest accelerations observed at the seat pan occurred in the fore-and-aft (X) direction at both the PRF and the BPF for all cushions and both postures. The most pronounced effect was at the BPF in the X direction, where all configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations than configuration 1 (original E-2C cushion) with the back-on posture. Configuration 5 was the exception with the back-off posture (Fig. 1A, Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). The most pronounced effect of posture occurred at the PRF in the X direction, where all cushion configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations with the back-off posture (Fig. 1B). All configurations except configuration 2 showed similar VTVs as compared to Configuration 1 (Fig. 2, P<0.05). Configuration 2 tended to show the lowest weighted acceleration levels. The concept of isokinetic measurement of strength was originally related by Hislop and Perrine.(1)Characteristics of an isokinetic exertion are constant velocity throughout a predetermined range of motion. Strictly speaking, a means of speed control, and not a load in the usual sense, is applied in isokinetic exertions.(1)However, load and resistance are definitely present in this technique. In this case, the load is a result of the energy absorption process performed by the device to keep the exertion speed constant. The device prevents energy from being dissipated through acceleration in isokinetic exercise. The energy is instead converted into a resistive force, which varies in relation to the efficiency of the skeletal muscle. Since the speed of motion is held constant in isokinetic exercise, the resistance experienced during a contraction is equivalent to the force applied throughout the range of motion. For this reason, the technique of isokinetic exercise has sometimes been referred to as accommodating resistance exercise. This type of exercise allows the muscle to contract at its maximum capability a tall points throughout the range of motion. At the extremes of the range of motion of a joint, the muscle has the least mechanical advantage, and the resistance offered by the machine is correspondingly lower. Similarly, as the muscle reaches its optimal mechanical advantage, the resistance of the machine increases proportionally. It must be understood, however, that while isokinetic devices control the speed of the exertion, this does not assure a constant speed of muscle contraction. The speed of isokinetic contractions is constant during individual exertions; however, it is also possible to compare muscular performance over a wide range of isokinetic velocities. Increasing the isokinetic speed of contraction will place increasing demands on Type II muscle fibers (fast twitch and fast oxidative glycolytic). Workplace Assessment It is clear that isometric strength testing cannot substitute for dynamic strength assessment when examining highly dynamic occupational job demands. As most industrial work tasks contain a significant dynamic component, analysis of isokinetic strength capabilities appears to offer some advantage to isometric testing in this regard. However, it must be recognized that isokinetic devices are not entirely realistic compared with free dynamic lifting in which subjects may use rapid acceleration to gain a weight-lifting advantage.

The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as&apos; it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study examined spontaneous heating episodes in coal mine pillars in an active underground coal mine. The information obtained from these incidents was then analyzed to learn which sampling methods provided the earliest indication of pillar heating. The objective of this study was to discover if the location of future events of pillar spontaneous heating could be inferred from the available information. The spontaneous heating-prone area in this evaluation involved pillars located just inby the mine portals. Several detection methods were used to determine gas levels outside as well as inside the affected pillars. It was hoped that, by incorporating external and internal sampling methods into an organized pro-gram, locations undergoing spontaneous heating could be determined more readily. This study found that by drilling small-diameter boreholes into the pillars, then obtaining gas samples from the affected pillars, the ability to locate early spontaneous heating episodes was improved. However, the ability to accurately predict future spontaneous heating events remains in question.
