In order to evaluate the flotation process, the process flow sheet was investigated. The process mineralogy of main products was studied. Through chemical mineralogical and screening analysis as well as surveying using a microscope and scanning electro-microscope, the oxidation degree and mineral composition of main-products the liberation of main minerals, the occurrence of elements such as Pb, Zn were revealed. It is pointed that to determine the flotation process, the type of prod-ucts optimum grind of original ore and middling was provided on the basis of liberation of main minerals is reliable. As correct finer ground original ore, first high-grade lead-concentrates and zinc-concentrates fast was floated from a great part of free of the galena and sphalerite of liberated. Then for finely re-ground middling of locked mineral grains of difficult liberation, mixing lead-zinc-concentrates second was floated. The four products was best in contact with characteristic of ore of Fan Kou. Therefore be obtained certain to successful economic effect.

The Mineral Processing Industry needs accurate Production Simulators for the design of future plants and expansions. To achieve this, these simulators should not only provide an accurate portrayal of the dynamics of individual pieces of equipment they should include the impact of discrete stochastic events such as scheduled and unscheduled maintenance so the relationships between availability, equipment sizes, and plant capacity are understood. To provide such a tool accurate dynamic Population Balance Models need to be combined with solid discrete event modeling. The current paper provides a description of how these two disparate modeling techniques were combined and the associated benefits from this combination. South African is a repository of significant deposits of a variety of minerals. The Citigroup confirms this assertion with an estimate of in-situ valuation of US$2.5 Trillion. The mining sector plays an important role in the South African economy. In addition to the mineral resource base South Africa has other comparative advantages. Firstly, South Africa retains major mining companies that participate globally, including Anglo American, Goldfields and De Beers. Their global involvement offers much to the local mining sector and the broader economy. Secondly, government established research councils. The Council for Geoscience (CGS) was established to manage the Geological Survey of South Africa, including the reduction of geo-scientific investment risk. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) promotes industrial development, including mining technology development. Mintek undertakes mineral research from mineral examination of ores, to extraction and refining technologies and manufacture of end products. Thirdly, South African universities teach and conduct research along the mineral value chain. They have increased their minerals graduates? capacity, thus advancing knowledge and skills. Knowledge and technical progress are behind productivity growth and emergence of competitive advantage. The research and development (R&D) capabilities of industry, science councils and universities, working in unison, will enhance the competitiveness of the South African mining industry. The National System of Innovation (NSI) requires multi-disciplinary, collaborative research. Key R&D elements, including skills and expertise, funding and facilities, must be available to implement a long-term national strategy or programme. Improved international collaboration and partnerships between government, academia and industry driven human resource development (HRD), ultimately develop the critical mass for inter-generational skills requirements. This trend requires an expansion of research collaboration programmes. Decisions involving investments and collaborative actions pertaining to R&D in the sector necessitate an analysis of the South African mineral value chain R&D capability. This paper analyses the evolution of R&D capability from exploration to refining, tertiary education, science councils and industry. The political economy of the evolution of this capability is analyzed in relation to the central role that the South African government plays in creating an appropriate supporting environment and related initiatives to enhance R&D and innovation. "The inertia cone crusher has lots of advantages, such as big crushing ratio, fine particle size, material layer crushing, good passing tramp iron performance and stable technical index, realized open crushing circuit and simplified crushing flowsheet. The crusher was input to China’s Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (BGRIMM) from Russia’s Mekhanobr-Tekhnika Research & Engineering Corporation at the beginning of the 1990s. This paper introduces that after years of absorption and innovation how Chinese researchers optimized and creatively designed about transmission mechanism, bracing structure, kinetic parameters, lubrication system, dust sealing system, damping system and hydraulic control system etc on the basis of keeping its advanced theory and unique structure, therefore the crusher’s stability was raised and the usage cost was reduced greatly. Accordingly the inertia cone crusher in China has been widely used in many fields, such as mineral resources and the recycling of metallurgical slag. The achievement in cooperation was fully affirmed by governments of Russia and China, and cooperation of science and technology in the mining and metallurgy industry between Russia and China is promoted greatly. INTRODUCTION From the early 1950s, the former Mekhanobr Institite(now Mechanobr-Tekhnika Research & Engineering Corporation) devoted itself to the research of inertial cone crusher and put it into industrial application in the late 1980s. Inertial cone crusher is like a maverick flower in the field of crusher. With its excellent performance and excellent application effect, it shocks the world and is destined to shine with a bright future. In the early 1990s, the chief leaders of the Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (BGRIMM), Academician Sun Chuan-yao and Professor Zheng Baochen, captured the extraordinary performance and strong vitality of inertial cone crusher with keen eyes. "The study was conducted with the sulfide mineral from the province of Zamora Chinchipe. It was characterized physical, chemical and mineralogical, obtaining between its main results a copper concentration of head ore of 0,58 %. The mineral was homogenized and taken to direct closed circuit: rollers mill - vibratory sieve (mesh # 16). Flotation was carried out in two stages: the collective and selective where in each one were performed 6 water recirculation as suggested by the technique used to relate information of a batch flotation to a continuous circuit called cyclic flotation tests (LCT). In the collective flotation (bulk) 2 Kg of mineral were grinded with 10 Kg of balls for 30 minutes and 62.5% of solids, the pulp was taken to the flotation process with solids percentages of 33.3% and pH 7, it was conditioned with 45 g / t of KAX 1%, 50 g/t of Aerofloat 208 and 20 g /t of Pine oil. The concentrate and tailings bulk obtained were filtered separately for the recovery of water and it was recirculated to the next grinding of 2kg mineral. In the selective flotation 1Kg of bulk concentrate was carried to regrind for 40 min, 62.5% percent of solids, 10 g of lime and 5 g of tannin FLOATAN T5, the pulp was taken to the roughing-collection-refining flotation circuit controlling the pH between 10.5 and 11 where conditioning (60 g/t of Aerofloat 208 and 30 g/t of Pine oil) and adding lime to the circuit and FLOATAN according to the procedure. The four fractions obtained from the circuit were filtered; the water was recirculated to the regrind process of the bulk concentrate. In the collective flotation process tends to stability in the fourth recirculating water to obtain a copper content of 4.5% and a recovery of 87%, recirculated water represents 69.8% of all water used in the 6 recycles. In the selective flotation circuit the fifth recirculating of water is the optimal where obtaining a copper content of 13% and a recovery of 72%, recirculated water in the selective flotation circuit represents 95% of the total water used in the 6 recycles."

Andalusite, silimanite and kyanite are polymorphs of aluminosilicate known as kyanite group. Minerals of this group are used in refractory. Sarband andalusite deposit is located in Markazi province in Iran. Mineralogical studies showed that the main minerals of this sample are andalusite (5%~10 %), mica, quartz and feldspar. Processing of the samples was carried out using two sizes, i.e. +500 µm and -500 µm. In the processing of +500 µm scrabble test was carried out on -4750 +500 µm and -2380 +500 µm. For -500+300 µm shaking table and magnetic separation were applied. For -300 µm fraction, flotation was carried out. The results of this tests showed that the processing of Shazand andalusite was not possible, because silica and iron impurities were diffused inside the andalusite mineral grains.

The environmental and economic sustainability of froth flotation is dependent on effective management, which in turn improves the performance of a concentrator. In economic terms this means improved recovery of valuable minerals, in environmental terms this means effective management of acid generating tailings. Three indicators were selected to measure the performance of an integrated flotation system. The system consists of two stages of flotation; valuable mineral flotation followed by environmental desulfurisation by froth flotation. The suitable indicators were selected based on their fulfilment of four attributes. An attribute is a desired aspect of an indicator. The four attributes were: comprehensive, relevant, sensitive and quantitative. Two environmental indicators and one economic indicator were selected. They represent revenue generation from valuable minerals and environmental cost of management. The suitability of the selected indicators was shown using illustrative scenarios.

"Due to limited water resources in mineral processing plants, increasing the efficiency of iron tailing dewatering system in order to obtain more usable water is very important. In this research, flocculation process, as one of the best method for water recovery, was investigated by using one organic cationic and three anionic types of flocculants with different dosages (10, 20, 30 g/ton) and iron ore tailing slurry (8 % w/w solidity) in series of graduated cylinders and obtained results were compared. it is observed that for tailing sample, the anionic flocculants have a significant effect on the settling rate of solid particles compared to the cationic types. Furthermore, effects of temperature (10, 23 and 43 ºC) and pH (2, 7 and 12) on the rate of settlement and turbidity was studied by utilizing the best flocculant. Findings showed that by increasing the amount of flocculant dosage, sedimentation rate went up and turbidity decreased. Comparison the out-put data of tests indicated that at temperature 23 °C and pH=7, the best results for both of faster settling rate and producing more clear water were reached. It should be considered that lower temperature has a more negative effect on the sedimentation rate and overflow water quality. So it will be predicted that for cold seasons, the consumption of the flocculant powder would be higher than the moderate or warm seasons. Also, coagulation/flocculation was evaluated by applying organic cationic coagulant added to anionic flocculant in three different times. Different ratios of coagulant to flocculant was examined (70%:30%, 50%:50%, 30%:70%) as well. Overall, utilizing coagulant had desirable influence on sedimentation experiments and obtaining high quality water. 1- INTRODUCTION In mineral Factories, among the important processes, solid-liquid separation process due to limited resources of water is very important and operates on iron ore tailing in settling tank as thickener in order to gain clear water for preventing water loss and applying again in plant units (Ciftci and Serhat Isik, 2017). Iron ore tailing include inharmonious compounds of iron oxides, silicates and aluminum-silicates. The percentage of solid in the tailing usually changes between 5 and 10 percent (Dash et al., 2011). One of the major problem about dewatering of tailing in thickener is solid-liquid separation of slurries with high stability because of fine particles. It means that rate of sedimentation is very slow and recovered water quality is inappropriate. This issue can be solved to a large extent by factors such as pH control, ionic strength and flocculation/coagulation process which results in aggregation of particles so that settlement by gravity is happened (Dash et al., 2011)."

"In the most iron ore beneficiation plants, reverse flotation is the best method for removing silicate gangues from final iron ore concentrate. Many previous studies show, if the major portion of impurities include quartz minerals, the flotation process is simple, but if iron silicates are dominant, reverse flotation is so complicated and mostly not very effective. In this study which was performed on the Sangan iron ore concentrate, the performance using of reverse flotation and magnetic flotation separator for elimination of silicate gangues from the magnetic iron concentrate was investigated. The operational parameters for reverse flotation are considered as: collector and frother types and dosages and also modifiers. But for magnetic flotation separator parameters were magnetic field intensity as well as overflow and underflow water rates. Results showed that reverse flotation has not a significant effect on the elimination of impurities. Because of the silicate gangues of Sangan concentrate including a mixture of quartz and iron silicates (amphibole, pyroxene and feldspar), so downgrading of the SiO2 content for the flotation concentrate was rather low and only average reduces of 20.60% were possible. But the findings of using magnetic separator was more satisfactory. Results of the weight recovery, iron grade and also SiO2 and S grades of final concentrate were better with magnetic flotation device. So at the best and optimum condition, we could reduce 51.01% of the total silicate (SiO2~ 2.19%) along with 74.66% of sulfur content (S~ 0.076%) and concentrate weight and Fe recoveries of 92.04% and 94.51% respectively, final Fe grade of 68.73%.INTRODUCTION Chemical/traditional flotation is one of the most effective methods for separating valuable particles from waste minerals, which is used in most mineral processing industries. Blue dust is a high grade soft haematite material containing 96.14% Fe2O3 transformed into magnetite (Fe3O4), when it is subjected to planetary ball milling in the presence of iron powder as reducing reagent. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Laser particle size analyser have been employed to characterize various samples collected at various milling times to know the phase evolution, particle size distribution and morphology of particles. X-ray diffraction studies reveal the formation of magnetite phase at the optimum milling time of 40 hours. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) study demonstrates, that sample obtained at 40 hours of milling time exhibits saturation magnetisation of 14.757 emu/g whereas the starting material used in this study shows only 1.0425 emu/g. "Process mineralogy’ is a form of applied mineralogy which focuses on addressing problems associated with the processing of ores. ‘Mineralogy’ is the scientific study of minerals and ‘mineral processing’ is the production of concentrates from ores. ‘Process mineralogy,’ however can be defined as the practical study of minerals associated with the processing of ores, concentrates and smelter products for the development and optimisation of metallurgical flowsheets, including the waste and environmental management considerations. This hybrid discipline consists of teams that include geologists, mineralogists, samplers, mineral processors and often others, working together. The degree of cross-training, communication and trust dictates the potential capacity of the team and where an appropriate work dynamic is fostered, in which relationships flourish as much as does the ethic of technical excellence, it is possible to develop technical capabilities that surpass those of conventional teams. The world’s demand for metals is ever increasing and ore deposits available for extraction and processing are lower grade and more complex, often containing deleterious elements that require tailored treatment. Generally, in the past, the technical challenges only needed to be overcome and assessed economically to make an ore deposit viable; increasingly and in the future, a more sustainable approach including environmental and societal considerations is needed. Process mineralogical assessment is increasingly providing the critical information that stands between failure or collapse and survival or success of some mining operations. In this paper, selected case studies are used to demonstrate the valuable role of the process mineralogy tools being used to provide the platform for innovative technology development. Their common attributes are discussed and distilled, thus providing some insights and potential guidance for addressing some of the likely future challenges of the mining industry."

The comminution in a high-pressure roller mill is modeled by an energy-based population balance approach considering three aspects of breakage taking place in the active zones of the mill: the interparticle breakage in the high-compression zone, the breakage at the edges of the rolls, and the pre-breakage in the acceleration zone. Together with an appropriate model of classification, this model can be used to simulate steady-state performance of closed-circuit grindings with high-pressure roller mill. After a brief description of the basic modeling approach, the algorithm of the steady-state calculation for a generalized grinding-classification circuit is presented, from which the circuit configurations commonly met in industrial practice can be derived. With an iron ore as feed material for example, simulation results are shown and discussed in respect of circulating load, specific energy consumption and product fineness for closed-circuit grindings under various operating conditions. The effects of stressing intensity, working gap, classifier parameters as well as circuit configuration on the overall circuit performance are investigated systematically by means of computer simulation.

The traditional technological flow sheets for processing of ferrous quartzite (magnetite ores) al-low production of the iron concentrates with Fe content of 65%~68 % and recovery level about 55 %. The losses of iron with the tails of wet magnetic separation are related to hematite and quartz-magnetite particles, which are not extracted under low magnetic field employed. This work presents the results of the application of reverse cationic flotation for production of hematite concentrates with weak silica content from the tailings of wet magnetic separation of mag-netite. Fine particle size, complex mineralogy and presence of locked particles determine the impos-sibility of direct production of hematite concentrate by flotation or magnetic separation. The gravity concentration allows obtaining of iron concentrate from the well-prepared feed (size fraction -53+20 µm) but with very low recovery. Thus, hematite concentrates with weak silica content and satisfactory iron recovery were obtained by reverse cationic flotation, when it was fed with iron pre-concentrate produced by high gradient magnetic separation. The best flotation results were obtained by the use of formulations based on amines of different molecular structure that modulate the structure of adsorption layer, and favour a shifting of hydro-philic-hydrophobic balance on the surface of silicates with adsorbed starch and their preferential transfer into the froth product.

"Comparison of flotation efficiency of the new multi-zone flotation cell (MZFC) and different conventional cells was carried out at lab and pilot scales on the various samples: high contrast pyrite tailings and old copper containing tailings. MZFC is a cell of intensive flotation, which provides optimal hydrodynamic conditions for all flotation sub processes. Enhancing of particle attachment, creation of conditions for coalescent flotation, selection of spatially separated zones according to optimal hydrodynamic conditions for flotation sub-processes are proposed as main principles to design an MZFC. The bubbles/pulp stratification was pointed out as a limiting step in the existing intensive flotation machines. Two strategies to improve bubbles/pulp stratification in the MZFC were studied: (a) impact of pulp-bubble jet to the surface of a prismatic insert inside of cell, which provides the detachment of low hydrophobic particles from bubbles, and (b) profiling the pulp/bubbles jet from the reactors due to a specific geometry of cell walls. The new continuous MZFC devices were demonstrated similar or higher efficiency in comparison with laboratory batch flotation cells for pyrite flotation. Higher flotation efficiency (82%) with pure pyrite concentrate (51.2% of sulfur) and a recovery level of 92% was obtained in MZFC when the cell with stratification by impact was used. Similar results were obtained with old Cu-containing tailings. Although MZFC had 1.5 times greater yields of concentrate than a batch flotation cell, it provided the increase of chalcopyrite recovery by 29.4% and concentrate grade by 4.8%. An original organization of pulp/bubbles stratification in the separator part of the new intensive flotation machine using variable geometry inserts allowed the best flotation selectivity with a bubble mineral loading coefficient 1.5 fold higher than the laboratory mechanical or pilot cells."

Anglo American Platinum practices fine grinding in its processing plants to enhance the liberation of valuable minerals. If the fine particles of valuable minerals generated during fine grinding are not recovered during the flotation process, this could significantly contribute to the overall losses. This study examines the flotability of fine moncheite (PGE mineral) particles in a controlled environment (moncheite size distribution, concentration and liberation). A barren Norite ore ground to 40% and 80% passing 53µm was spiked, with four different size fractions of moncheite (-5, -10+5, -25+10 and -53+25µm) in order to evaluate the effect of particle size on flotation. The investigation also included the effect of energy input and collector dosage on the flotation of two moncheite size fractions, namely -5µm and -10+5µm. The results showed that the moncheite particle size has a significant impact on flotation. Coarse particles (-53+25µm) showed the highest Pt flotation kinetics and overall recoveries. The -5µm size fraction of moncheite could also be recovered by flotation, however, at a lower rate compared to the other size classes investigated. The increased collector dosage of 300g/t at the finer Norite grind of 80% passing 53µm enhanced the flotation rate of the -5µm size fraction of moncheite when compared to the lower collector dosage of 150g/t. The higher energy input during laboratory flotation, at an impeller speed of 1000rpm also increased the flotation rate of the -5µm size range, however, at a lower concentrate grade, when compared to the lower impeller speed of 700rpm. More favourable Pt flotation kinetics data was obtained for the -53 +25µm size fraction of moncheite at the fine Norite grind when compared to the coarse Norite grind. "In flotation, depressants are used to reduce the amount of gangue that reports to the concentrate and hence increase the selectivity of the flotation process. At the University of Cape Town extensive batch flotation tests are carried out to evaluate industrial depressants and standard procedures have been developed over the years.This study was conducted in order to develop an improved method for comparing depressants using machine vision as an aid. The modified method of batch flotation involved a test with prolonged intervals between scraping to allow more time for the froth to build up and mature.This method of testing showed increased differences between the flotation performance obtained as represented by grade recovery curves for carboxymethyl cellulose and guar depressants when compared to the standard method of testing with shorter scraping intervals. The improvement was attributed to reduced entrainment resulting from longer drainage time in the froth and therefore yielded a better test for comparing depressants on the basis of true gangue flotation with minimized entrainment. As expected, the sulphide recoveries were unaffected by the change in method. The machine vision system also added to the information obtained during these tests by recording bubble size trends throughout the tests which were later analyzed and related to the amount of flotable gangue in the froth. Modifications are recommended to improve the usefulness of machine vision in batch flotation."

The ore, dealt with in this paper, is a certain rutile in Shanxi province, China. A trunk flowsheet with gravity concentration is used, and the TiO2 grade of rutile concentrate is about 90%, but the TiO2 recovery is less than 50%. In order to increase the rutile recovery, the laboratory test, using the truck flowsheet with flotation, is carried out. The flowsheet is that firstly floatable gangue is re-moved by flotation; secondly rutile is recovered by flotation; and thirdly impurity is separated by LIMS, HIMS, gravity concentration and flotation from the rutile concentrate. In rutile flotation, BK423, a phosphonic acid, is used as rutile collector, and Na2SiF6 is used as silicates depressant. The experimental result shows that the recovery of rutile concentrate is improved obviously, and the recovery of ultimate rutile concentrate is 68.01% TiO2 and 84.88% rutile. The TiO2 grade of first concentrate is 95.98%, and the TiO2 recovery is 45.60%. The TiO2 grade of second concentrate is 80.53%, and the recovery is 22.41%. Furthermore, magnetite and ilmenite are recovered in the flowsheet.

"The extraction of gold in the Philippines has been a significant challenge for the past decades. Around 70-75% of gold mined in the country can be accounted from the small-scale mining industry which primarily use the traditional cyanidation and amalgamation; processes which have been advocated due to its adverse affects to health and environment. To address this challenge, an alternative clean and sustainable technology was developed for the small-scale miners to recover gold and other metal/mineral values efficiently from Philippine ores. An initial survey was conducted and followed through with extensive mineralogical investigations ascertain the best method applicable. It was determined that Philippine gold occur in ore as (1) very fine particles in the microns range, (2) free-milling, which is in abundance, and (3) locked particles with sulfides --- it was concluded that enhanced gravity concentration and flotation are viable alternatives. A comprehensive test regime was followed to check the response of the ores obtained from different small-scale mining districts across the country. It was shown conclusively that the gold ores respond positively, with recoveries using gravity concentration and flotation of at least 95% and 88%, respectively; exceeding the nominal recoveries using cyanidation or amalgamation. A specific process flow was designed for each type of ore with customized parameters. It was determined that while capital expenditure of implementing these alternative processes is higher than what is currently being used, the operational aspects show that it is much more economical to apply enhanced gravity and flotation. It should be noted that the process developed addresses the critical issue of environmental costs which should be more than enough to justify the shift from the current to the novel and sustainable technologies."

"Deep concentration of iron ores involves extraction, in addition to magnetite concentrate, of hematite and martite concentrates and recovery of other valuable components. A flotation technology was designed specifically for finely disseminated hematite ore, allowing producing saleable hematite concentrate containing 64-66% Fe. The main process challenge is caused by the presence of other ferruginous minerals such as carbonates, silicates, and phosphates, and fine hematite and martite mostly concentrated in the -0.044 mm fraction. Main operations of the processing circuit are removal of slime, flotation to remove impurities (carbonates, phosphates etc.) with an anionic phosphorous collector in an alkaline environment, hematite and martite flotation using same collector in a slightly acidic environment to produce commercial iron concentrate. Tailings of wet magnetic separation of magnetite containing 24.5% Fe and finely disseminated hematite ore containing 51% Fe were processed to produce iron concentrates with a yield of 15% and 50%, respectively, containing approximately 65% Fe and 5% of silica. Hematite flotation tailings had the highest content of gold (up to 0.09 - 0.11 g/t), while in other products it never exceeded 0.02 g/t. Using a Knelson concentrator was able to recover 40 to 45% of the gold into 3.31 g/t Au gravity concentrate. The success of gravity concentration is due to high gravitational contrast of gold to mostly quartz and aluminosilicates in the hematite flotation tailings. In general, the proposed process can be used as a solution to the challenge of selective concentration of finely disseminated iron minerals."
