The Early Norian Windy Craggy massive sulfide deposit is within the allochthonous Alexander terrane of the Insular tectonic belt in extreme northwestern British Columbia (Figure 1). Host rocks are the Middle Tats Volcanics, part of an informally-named volcano-sedimentary succession of mixed graphitic argillites and mafic pillowed and massive volcanic flows and sills of Upper Triassic age (Figure 2) that have suffered only lower greeschist-facies metamorphism. The volcanic rocks are light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched and display a variably developed back-arc subduction signature. Major and trace element compositions of the host argillite show that it contains an appreciable hydrothermal component, as evidenced by low high Fe and Mn contents. These sediments therefore record steady, continuous hydrothermal activity punctuated by intermittent turbidity currents sweeping into the basin. The deposit consists of at least two discrete sulfide lenses (the North and South Sulfide Bodies), as shown in Figure 3, a level plan at the elevation of the exploration workings. Published reserves at 0.5% copper cut-off are 297.4 million tonnes grading 1.38% Cu, 0.08% Co, 0.21 g/t Au and 3.9 g/t Ag (as of December 1991). However, the deposit is larger than this and further drilling is required to delineate it completely. Mineralization comprises massive sulfide, stringer/stockwork, and finely bedded to laminated sulfides and exhalites. Stockwork mineralization consists of sulfide-quartz-chlorite veins with attendant chlorite and silica alteration. Mineralization consists predominantly of massive pyrrhotite andlor pyrite with lesser chalcopyrite and magnetite. Figure 4 is an oblique section through the North Sulfide Body, the most northerly sulfide mass shown in Figure 3, which shows the distribution of the pyrite and pynhotite-rich massive mineralization and the stringer zone. The North Sulfide Body contains appreciable sphalerite, whereas the South Sulfide Body contains only trace amounts. The western continental margin comprises of the southwest coast (Cape Comorin-Mangalore), centralwest coast or Konkan coast (Mangalore-Bombay), northwest coast (Bombay-Gulf of Kutch) and the Laccadives area. Placer deposits of heavy minerals occur in discontinuous patches on the beaches along many parts of the west coast. The richest offshore placer deposits occur along the 25 km stretch of the southwest coast from Neendakara to Kayamkulam. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) surveys show that the sediments off the Konkan coast consist largely of silty sand, sandy silt and clay and the concentration of ilmenite is higher than the onshore. The heavy mineral concentration ranges up to 90% and has mainly ilmenite and magnetite with minor quantities of apatite, rutile, zircon, kyanite etc. The heavy mineral sands extend below the clays to water depth down to 20 m. The heavy minerals sands vary in thickness from 2-10 m. Offshore placers can be mined by using wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line, bucket ladder and hydraulic dredges. Wire-line dredges may employ drag buckets or clamshell and hydraulic dredges suction or airlift principles. The dredges can be located on flat bottom or catamaran barges. Dredging of very near shore placers may be achieved by operating from land. The bucket ladder type of dredger has greater digging ability and hence can be deployed for mining placers which are partly consolidated or cemented or where the most valuable part of the deposit lies at the contact between the alluvium and the bedrock. This type operates very economically up to 45 m depth and needs minimum power requirement per unit dredged. Suction type hydraulic dredges can be operated very effectively up to 60 m water depths. This system is quite ideal for the inner shelf. The maximum practical economic working water depths for wire-line dredges are about 150 m. With the drag bucket modified into large net buckets, the method can be utilized to greater depths. They can be used in areas of high water currents and swells. The type of bucket can be changed readily with change in the nature of alluvium or substratum. The hydraulic suction dredge is the most suitable system for mining unconsolidated sediments. When the sediments are semi-unconsolidated, a cutter head can be mounted on the lower end of the suction pipe to agitate the seabed.

One of the obstacles during the initial phases of project development is the assessment of the environmental impact. Mining residue, consisting of fine seafloor sediments, are to be discharged subsea to mitigate the impact of these suspended particles. In order to test the effectiveness of discharging in proximity of the seabed, a numerical model is developed within the open source software package OpenFoam. Dedicated laboratory experiments for numerical model validation are discussed within this paper. INTRODUCTION Siltation is considered one of the major pressures on the environment for a seabed mining operation. Siltation is defined as the pollution of water by a high concentration of suspended sediments like clay or silt. This can be caused by two main activities during the mining process: the spill loss during the excavation and the return flow of undesired seafloor sediment after ore filtration on the ship. In a concentrated cloud, these fine particles form a so-called turbidity plume. Prediction of the size of these plumes and the created layer thickness of deposited sediment is a crucial part of the environmental impact assessment. The challenge in predicting the behaviour of these plumes is found in the wide range of scales involved in the process. At the point of origin, the turbidity plumes spread mainly under the influence of turbulent whirls created by an initial momentum and a buoyancy difference due to the presence of the suspended sediment particles. If carried by ambientcurrents, these plumes can spread for several kilometres before blending in the background.

The exploration of the seafloor regarding the abundances of poly-metallic nodules has received growing attention recently. Image-based exploration using cameraequipped deep-sea observation systems has been introduced successfully to increase spatial resolution in the exploration process but the evaluation and interpretation of the huge amount of image data creates a serious bottleneck. In this paper we present a new software solution to the problem of automatic detection and segmentation of poly-metallic nodules in underwater images, which is not only accurate but so fast that real time image analysis is definitely in reach. Thus, an application on an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) seems possible in the near future.

Six active Kermadec arc submarine volcanoes located between 34°S and 36°30’S were mapped and sampled by an interdisciplinary inter-institutional research team between April and July 2005 using submersibles Pisces V and Pisces IV aboard the mother ship the R/V Ka’imikai-o-Kanaloa. The purpose of the expedition was to study the relationship between hydrothermal activity, formation of hydrothermal mineral deposits, and the biodiversity of life associated with the hydrothermal vents. Of the volcanoes examined, all showed evidence of hydrothermal activity, including metal-rich plumes and helium anomalies. Only two of the volcanoes, namely Brothers and Clark, showed chimneys and surficial polymetallic sulfide deposition. Hydrothermal venting at a water depth of approximately 1,650 meters near the base of the northwest caldera wall of Brothers volcano has produced a field of chimneys, some of them seven metres high and discharging black smoker venting. Temperatures up to 300°C were measured from the active vents. Clark volcano has a double cone summit at a water depth of 875 meters. The shallowest cone has a near-summit hydrothermal vent field with five-meter tall venting chimneys with smaller structures around the periphery.

"The Blue Nodules project started February 2016 as part of the EU Horizon 2020 subsidy program. Blue Nodules aims at developing a sustainable deep sea mining system for the harvesting of polymetallic nodules from the sea floor. Blue Nodules is closely related to the Blue Mining and Midas projects, both EU subsidized projects. Blue Mining mainly concerned the development of technical capabilities to adequately and cost-effectively discover, assess and transport deep sea mineral deposits up to 6,000 m water depths. The MIDAS project - Managing Impacts of DeepseA reSource exploitation - was a multidisciplinary research programme investigating the environmental impacts of extracting mineral and energy resources from the deep-sea environment.The Blue Nodules project is divided in seven work packages defined to develop mining equipment and process equipment, to assess and integrate environmental, economic and technological aspects and to assess and minimize the environmental impact of mining polymetallic nodules.This abstract will address part of the work performed in the second work package called: ‘Subsea harvesting equipment and control technology’. The main topic addressed will be the development of a propulsion system to manoeuvre the harvesting system. The propulsion system will be developed with full incorporation of economical and compliance requirements and to have a minimal environmental impact.SummaryBased on information gathered in the 70’s during the first studies into polymetallic nodules mining and more recent data and developments, an initial full scale design of the propulsion system is developed. "With the growing global demand for strategic metals, commodity prices are rising and the scarcity of some metals is increasing. Europe’s technology sector is also affected by this growing shortage of metals. Securing the supply of critical metals is now a major element in Europe’s economic strategy. The Blue Mining and Blue Nodules projects have been initiated to principally advance deep sea mining technology beyond current TRL-levels.These critical metals are found inside so-called “polymetallic nodules”, lying on the seafloor in deep-sea environment. These nodules have a typical abundance of 10-25 kg/m2 and a size range of 10-125 mm.Harvesting the polymetallic nodules is challenging. Two main methods of harvesting or collector equipment are distinguished: hydraulic and mechanical. Over the last year, Royal IHC has designed, build and tested a full-scale hydraulic collector. Meanwhile, a mechanical collector is being developed.First, a scaled version of the hydraulic collector was developed and tested in order to have a proof of principle. The development as well as optimization were aided by multiphase CFD simulations."

Deep ocean mining is experiencing a rebirth following many years of low levels of activity. Large scale mining is being projected as just over the horizon. A lot has been made of the advances in deep water oil and gas developments over the last thirty years, and how this technology is directly applicable to ocean mining. The authors present their views on this from a perspective of a legacy of participating in the development of manganese nodule mining systems in the 1970s, followed by thirty years in the deepwater oil & gas arena. While it is true that great advances have been made in subsea technology, the differences between mining and oil and gas recovery should not be diminished. Fundamentally, oil and gas are stored in compact reservoirs under pressure. Any intervention leads to flow of the material up a pipe to the surface. The seabed hard minerals are stuck in place, either adhering to sticky pelagic sediment (nodules) or bonded together as hard rock (massive sulfides). The minerals require complex machinery in order to be extracted, sized, concentrated and lifted to the surface. Once at the surface the ore must be dewatered, de-fined and transferred to shore for processing. The overflow from this dewatered product must return to the sea in an environmentally satisfactory manner. These steps involve technology unique to mining that has to be addressed in a methodical fashion before commercial mining systems can be designed. The presentation will discuss the critical technical challenges of deepsea mining and thoughts on different routes to commercialization. The program will address the critical technical challenges, as perceived by the authors, and steps required to address them. Deep Reach Technology, Inc. recently completed a multi-year cooperative research project for the U S Army Research Laboratory for the purposes of investigating recovery of rare earth elements from the seabed. This research led to the discovery of a potentially economical deposit in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Cook Islands. In order to further develop this resource, Ocean Minerals LLC (OML) was formed in 2016 to explore the development of a deep-sea mining project to recover rare earth elements and scandium from the upper 10m of sediment in promising areas of the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone. OML and the Cook Islands Investment Corporation signed an Agreement in 2016 giving OML exclusive rights to explore a 12000 sq km area and option rights over an additional 48,000 sq km. This poster presents the current status and activities related to this project.

SUMMARY The Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) hosts the most valuable deposit of polymetallic nodules yet discovered. Understanding the geology of this deposit is key to its effective exploration and mining. Nautilus Minerals (via its subsidiary Tonga Offshore Mining Limited; TOML) has been progressing its understanding of the relationship between seafloor morphology/structure and nodule abundance/morphology, both locally (within its contract areas), and globally (across the CCZ and the span of its contract areas of almost 70% of the CCZ). We present the first results of a project with the aim of developing a method to quickly and accurately map seafloor morphology/structure (Tectonic Subcomponent scale) without the necessity for high resolution seafloor multibeam data. Furthermore, the results presented here will allow a first attempt in understanding the relationship between seafloor geomorphologically-defined zones and plate-scale tectonics of the CCZ and adjacent plate segments. INTRODUCTION A relationship between the type of geochemical active layer and nodule abundance/morphology has long been understood (ISA, 2010). Consideration of the range of differing nodule types found within, but especially between, the TOML contract areas allowed Parianos and Pomee (2017) to refine this relationship further via interpreted thickness and dynamism of the geochemically active layer. The scale of the deposit, both in terms of space and time is staggering (a 10-20 cm thick deposit, spanning almost 4500 km, varying within a circa 10 Ma period), but a segment wide geological map may one day prove to reflect controls on nodule formation and distribution.

Recent focus by terrestrial mineral explorers (and investors) on cobalt has increasingly highlighted the future critical need for this metal, with new-age batteries being the primary utilisation. We present an overview of the world’s current terrestrial cobalt resources and put this in perspective of currently known seabed resources, particularly polymetallic nodule and crust deposits. We focus on comparison of the key exploration, development and exploitation risks for such deposits, and provide a framework for financial evaluation and appraisal.

We will then recommend suggested amendments to the Exploitation Regulations to assist future investment on this growing industry.

The Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle is a two-man portable AUV that is capable of performing seafloor surveys in water depths to 2000 meters. The standard survey sensor suite includes a dual frequency side scan sonar and high resolution digital camera. Additional survey sensors are currently being incorporated into the Gavia AUV, include Sub Bottom sonar, Swath Bathymetry sonar and Multi Beam sonar. The modular design of the Gavia AUV allows the end user to quickly incorporate new sensors including client developed propriety sensors.

Many attempts have been made to design and build an AUV that is small, meets the sensing objectives and is cost effective. Many inventors have already designed smaller vehicles but the problem observed is an increased vehicle instability resulting in instrument instability where data gathered is not trustworthy. Additional problems include instrument weight to vehicle weight ratios and the lack of space for power storage and electrical components. The UFOceanic seeks to remedy these concerns by employing a completely different design and propulsion system. Still in the design stage ? now with a mock-up unit for testing, the results are encouraging. We have chosen a very low voltage embedded systems design using multiple PIC processors and fuzzy logic programming. We are designing the craft to rotate for stability and to provide friction reduction to minimize the need for instrument stability compensation and propulsion power. Additionally, we are looking and experimenting with a number of power plant drive systems including flywheels, GNP (plasma), fuel cells and more conventional systems. We of course plan for the UFOceanic to run for months at a time supported by a self-charging system.

"Seafloor mining provides significant potential economic benefits for many Pacific nations that may be “land poor” but “coastline rich,” meaning they have the potential to utilize and profit from the mineral wealth within their Exclusive Economic Zones that extend 200 nautical miles (360 km) out from their coastlines. Within international waters, mineral wealth is the “Common Heritage of Mankind” with additional benefits for sponsoring states and their people.The Solwara 1 Project build continues with significant progress over the last twelve months. The Seafloor Production Tools (SPTs), Subsea Slurry Lift Pump, riser pipe, launch and recovery systems and winches are now complete with delivery to test facilities and the vessel ongoing. Recent focus has been on submerged trials for the SPTs, but the vessel build continues to progress to schedule. Nautilus appreciates the great support thus far from our all our stakeholders.Our focus is to develop the world's first commercial high grade seafloor copper-gold project in an environmentally and socially responsible manner and to launch the deepwater seafloor resource production industry.Nautilus’s marine research continues, including a 3.5-month series of exploration cruises for Seafloor Massive Sulphides in the Bismarck Sea, as well as fabrication of purpose designed exploration equipment."

"Lifting of slurry from the seabed mining machine to the surface production vessel is a critical element of any deepwater seabed mining system. A Vertical Transport System (VTS) comprises pump(s), riser string, connectors and hang-off assembly as its main components, but it is the pipe material, riser configuration and installation method that often attract the most discussions.This presentation will feature important VTS design work 2H has done over the years for different stakeholders, and highlight the work carried out as a partner to the EU funded Blue Mining Joint Industry Project.The key challenges faced by a deepwater VTS are:??High riser payload??Large deck space for storing riser joints??Long time to deploy and retrieve riser??Uncertain metocean conditions??Vortex induced vibrations??Weld and connector fatigueIncreasing the water depth further sees the longer and increasingly ‘springy’ riser experiencing axial resonance caused by wave induced vessel heave motions being close to the riser resonant period. This can lead to snatch loading and fatigue failure in the riser.The presentation will discuss the above design issues, analysis requirements and provide guidance on pump/riser selection. Solutions to mitigate the resonant response issues will also be proposed.."
