Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.

This paper describes the installation, commissioning and operation of porous plugs featuring nitrogen gas purging in both Anode Furnaces at the Kansanshi Copper Smelter (KCS), a greenfield copper smelter which commenced operation in March 2015. The decision to install porous plugs was taken in November 2016 and the facilities were successfully commissioned on both anode furnaces in October 2017. The project was successful and has demonstrated the following process improvements: 12.2% reduction in main burner fuel consumption Larger average charge size, due to fewer accretions; 17 minute decrease in average refining cycle times Improvements in slag skimming operations Improved casting rates INTRODUCTION Porous plugs The application of porous plug technology in copper smelter anode furnaces is well established around the world. Vukovic and Gamweger (2017) and Wallner (2004) noted that the stirring and mixing action induced by the injection of inert nitrogen gas into the molten copper via porous plugs has potential benefits in the following areas: Homogenization of the temperature and composition of the molten copper resulting in Reduced fuel consumption Less tendency to overheat slag (reduced risk of refractory attack) Less slag produced with a lower degree of oxidation (lower rate of refractory wear) Less tendency for buildups to form Improved environmental performance (produce low sulphur blister at Peirce Smith converters) Elimination of buildups inside the furnace and potential for larger charges per cycle Reduced processing times and potential for shorter cycle times More efficient skimming of anode slag Shorter skimming time Less copper carry over to Peirce Smith converters Very little slag remaining in the furnace (reduced potential for buildups to form)

The increasing move to block cave mining methods (including sublevel and panel caving) to access deeper and lower grade ore deposits as near surface sources become exhausted raises questions as to the extent and magnitudes of caving-induced subsidence as it may affect strain-sensitive infrastructure on surface. Predicting these surface deformations is difficult as they tend to be discontinuous and asymmetric due to large movements around the cave controlled by geologic structures, rock mass heterogeneity and topographic effects. Of further impediment is the sparse number of case histories available, in which actual subsidence measurements are reported to provide guidance and empirical constraints for subsidence calculations. This study reports the development of an exhaustive and comprehensive database of available (i.e. public domain) subsidence data from block cave mining operations from around the world.

"The carbon-in-pulp process for recovery of gold dissolved in dilute cyanide solutions, in the presence of solids, has now replaced the convedntional processes of pregnant liquid/barren solids separation followed by Merrill-Crowe precipitation. Most plants built over the past ten years incorporate a CIP section. The process is described as cheaper in capital and operating costs, and few major start-up or operational difficulties are reported. For the purpose of the present paper, the CIP process will be assumed to consist of the following sequence of operations (Figure 1):- the slurry stream coming out of the cyanidation circuit is first screened to remove any tramp oversize material. Gold dissolution is assumed to be complete before entering the CIP circuit.- the slurry is sent into a series of agitated tanks in which it is mixed with activated carbon. The carbon particles size is much coarser than the top size of the ground ore. The tanks are fitted with screens that allows the slurry to overflow continuously into the next tank, while retaining the carbon in the tank. Slurry dilution is adjusted to prevent carbon from settling in the tanks. Agitation intensity is kept low in order to minimize carbon abrasion.- carbon is transfered from tank to tank in a discontinuous manner. According to a specific schedule, the carbon from tank one is removed, then carbon from tank two is sent to tank one, and so on, till the last tank, which is filled with regenerated carbon corning from the elutionregeneration section. The amount of carbon removed, the transfer from tank to tank, the sequence of transfer, the carbon inventory in the various tanks are parameters which are, up to a point, at th2 discretion of the operators, as long as they remove, batch wise, an amount of loaded carbon containing a similar quantity of gold to the one that has entered the circuit since the last transfer."

"In 1998, the Iron Ore Company of Canada initiated an aggressive program to improve the performance of its Carol Lake Concentrator located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This program was termed the Concentrator Upgrade Program. The Concentrator Upgrade Program was a group of initiatives developed with the common goal of improving the overall process and operations of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator. The main goal of the program was to increase the annual production capacity of the concentrator from 18.0 million tomes to 21.6 million tomes. This gain in capacity was to be done mainly through improvements in process iron recovery. The target iron recovery value was 80+% versus a historical value of 70%. This improvement in iron recovery would translate to a natural weight recovery improvement from 44% to 50%.The Concentrator Upgrade Program provided the first opportunity in 30 years to make fimdamental changes to the concentrator flowsheet. To accomplish this, several pilot plants were built to evaluate new circuits. AAer 2 years, a new flowsheet was selected for the primary gravity separation circuit and the magnetite circuit. The centrepiece of the new flowsheet was the introduction of Hindered Settling Separators to the metallurgical process.The Concentrator Upgrade Program has since proceeded into detailed engineering and, as of February 2001, construction. The first one of IOCC’s 3 primary AG Mills (Mill 11) has been converted to the new flowsheet at the time of writing and is in the throes of commissioning. This paper will review the flowsheet development program in the pilot plant for the gravity separation circuit and examine the overall benefits to the operation of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator."

"Mineral separation by exploiting the differences in mineral or metal specific gravities (sg) has been used since antiquity. In the modern era, this is most commonly seen in the recovery of gold by the use of centrifugal concentrators and the separation of coal (low sg) from waste rock (high sg) using heavy media cyclones and jigs. Other metals, notably oxides of tin and tungsten, are successfully recovered using some combination of jigs, spirals and shaking tables. However, many conventional gravity separation systems are limited to fairly coarse (>1 mm) to medium (>100 micron) particle separations due to the limitations of the gravitational separation forces in conventional equipment.Many of the high specific gravity minerals of interest are friable (e.g. cassiterite, wolframite, etc.) and excessive fines are generated in the grinding/comminution circuits which cannot be recovered with conventional equipment and may be lost directly to the tailings stream. Recent developments in centrifugal gravity separation equipment specifically designed for fine or ultra-fine particle separation and recovery have resulted in heavy mineral particle recoveries as fine as 10-20 microns. Ongoing research work has also identified the benefit of closed-circuit, multi-stage gravity recovery circuits using some combination of centrifugal concentrators and conventional equipment (tables, spirals, flotation, etc.) which can substantially increase overall plant recovery and final concentrate grade.This paper will provide details of the evolution of non-fluidized bed gravity concentrators for high sg mineral recoveries, correlate laboratory scale development work with plant results to confirm scale-up, and show how recent flowsheet developments have contributed to significantly improved plant performance.IntroductionGravity concentration is one of the oldest and most cost effective metal and/or mineral recovery systems, ranging from the classic hand panning of alluvial gold, through to the large scale production of a wide range of metals and minerals, including gold, silver, PGMs, black sands, coal and iron oxides. Conventional gravity recovery systems, comprised of some combination of sluices, spirals, jigs and shaking tables have limited application in fine particle (i.e. <100 microns) recovery, or where there are limited differences in particle specific gravities (sg), e.g. the separation of high sg, high value metal oxides (e.g. those of tin, tantalum or tungsten), from medium sg, lower value metal sulfides such as pyrite and pyrrhotite. These unit operations tend to have limited capacity, and while double and triple turn spirals and multi-deck tables have been developed, extensive floor space is often required in order to process the tonnages incorporated in the modern mineral processing plant."

Companies are expected to ?engage? communities without a clear understanding of ?how? to do this or to what end. This move, away from compliance, develops more of a focus on ?Community? Social Responsibility and sustainability. This shift leads to the development of world-class projects that provide sustainable development for people, reduce the incidence of costly delays, and promote good global citizenship for companies. The process of ?engaging? communities in mining project design and development leads to a stronger license to operate, and a reduction in social and political risk. To create this mutually beneficial relationship between communities and companies, communities must be ?engaged? in the project development and risk assessment processes as early as possible, preferably during the exploration or the concept phases. How to create this ?engagement? and manage this risk will be discussed.

"The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill’s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.THE FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE EQUATIONObservation of the feed and product size distributions going into and discharging from the mill in grinding circuits with low versus high circulating load ratios initially led to the definition of “circuit classification system efficiency” (or CSE, McIvor, 1988a), and ultimately the discovery of the Functional Performance Equation (McIvor, 1988b, and McIvor et al, 1992). The CSE is the percentage of “coarse” (typically with reference to the plus P80) size material occupying the mill (versus “fines” or product size material, finer than the circuit P80), and can be calculated by taking the average of the percentage of coarse material in the mill feed and mill discharge. As this also represents the percentage of the mill energy expended on targeted, coarse size material, it is directly proportional to overall grinding circuit efficiency and production rate. This is all clearly expressed in the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits, which is derived as follows.We define “fines” as any product size material, and “coarse” as that targeted to be further ground, the two typically differentiated by the circuit target P80. For any grinding circuit, the production rate of new, product size material (fines) must equal the specific grinding rate of the coarse material (i.e. fine product generated per unit of energy applied to the coarse material) times the power applied to the coarse material."

Controlling the level of impurities in copper refinery electrolytes is essential to achieving acceptable cathode purity. Purge of electrolyte is not an entirely satisfactory solution since the cost of neutralization, waste disposal, and replacement acid can be appreciable. The APU® process utilizes ion exchange resin to sorb sulphuric acid while rejecting metal salt impurities. Extensively employed for recovery of waste pickling and anodizing acids since 1977, the system is now being used at several refineries for removal of contaminants such as antimony, bismuth, iron, and nickel. The purified acid, which is recovered from the resin by water elution, is recycled back to the refinery tank-house, while the metals are typically recovered from the de-acidified by-product solution by precipitation.

The Porcupine Joint Venture operates the Dome Mine in South Porcupine, Ontario. Dome underground began production in 1910. It is the longest continuous operating gold mine in Canada, producing in excess of 15 M ounces. More than 900 underground stopes have been mined and hundreds of miles of drifts, sublevels and raises developed. Underground mining methods included shrinkage, cut and fill and longhole. Not all stopes were backfilled upon completion, particularly the longhole stopes. The Dome open pit was designed above the underground mine workings such that, as the pit is excavated, it intersects underground drifts and stopes. Potential operational problems associated with the interactions between the stopes and the pit walls may occur, necessitating pit wall redesign, ground support installation and operational rescheduling. Each intersection of the pit with the underground mine workings is closely evaluated to maintain a safe working environment and wall stability. This paper discussed how risks to pit wall stability are assessed, mitigated and monitored.

"Platinum-group minerals (PGM) typically occur in such low concentrations that quantitative mineralogical evaluation is difficult or impossible. The FEI MLA system used by Vale Base Metals Technology Development has been successfully employed to produce large PGM data sets that are statistically robust. The MLA Sparse Phase Liberation mapping routine produces false colored images that accurately document mineral textures, including intergrowths between various platinum group minerals and between PGMs and other tellurides and sulfides. MLA PGM search results can be used in conjunction with mineral chemistry to calculate platinumgroup element distribution to minerals and the MLA PGM images can be used to produce model grade-recovery curves.INTRODUCTIONThe platinum-group minerals (PGM) found in Sudbury area deposits have been extensively catalogued and reviewed by many authors including, but not limited to: Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), Cabri and Laflamme (1984; 1976) and Cabri (1981). The PGM list currently used has 12 minerals summarized in Table 1. As noted by Farrow and Lightfoot (2002), platinum-group minerals in Sudbury are dominated by tellurides, bismuth-tellurides and arsenides, with an absence of platinum-group element (PGE) sulphides or ferro-platinum alloys such as tetraferroplatinum - PtFe."

A comprehensive axial test program has been undertaken at the WASM Dynamic Test Facility on the performance of 20mm threadbar. The threadbar tests had a double embedment configuration, with variation to the encapsulation lengths, debonded length and surface hardware and fixtures to examine failure mechanisms. Performance was significantly affected by the collar embedment length and type of fixture nut used. Results ranged from thread shearing occurring between the nut and bar at 1kJ of energy dissipated, to control plastic deformation of a central debonded length dissipating 22kJ.

"AEROPHINE@ 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn- and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treating different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.INTRODUCTIONCyanamid operates the only phosphine and phosphine derivatives plant in North America, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Specialty chemicals manufactured at this facility are used in many diverse applications, including solvent extraction reagents and textile flame retardants. A unique phosphine-based sulfide mineral promoter, AEROPHINE 3418A, is also produced. The origins of AEROPHINE 3418A promoter date back to the 1960's, when it was established that sulfide mineral collectors based on phosphine chemistry demonstrated efficacy. This new collector chemistry was found to provide flotation performance differing significantly from those of more traditional thiol collector chemistries such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, mercaptobenzothiazoles, thionocarbamates and those with xanthogen groups. "In February, 1975, the President of Georgia Iron Works Company, Mr. Tom Hagler decided to build a new hydraulic laboratory to water performance test all of the companies' centrifugal slurry pumps.Equipment procurement started in March, 1975, by ordering of a mini computer data acquisition system.Work commenced on the lab in July, 1976, by erection of a Butler Building and the laying down of a 20,000 gallon concrete sump.By late October, a facility compromising two water test loops of 8"" and 18"" pipe diameter was in operation carrying out head quantity and suction performance tests on pumps up to 16"" in size.In August of the following year, an 8"" diameter pipe slurry loop was installed to enable pipe friction and deposition velocity of a slurry to be measured in an 8"" inside diameter pipe.With the encouragement of Reserve Mining in Minnesota and IMCC in Florida, this was followed in March, 1978, by the addition of over 300 feet of 18"" diameter pipe to make up an 18"" diameter pipe slurry system complete with head loss and deposition velocity observation sections.The office and shop areas of the lab were again expanded in April, 1978, to provide further expansion to the test sections and staff facilities."

"The study evaluated the impact on overall circuit metallurgy of improving the performance of the two flotation columns that make up the final Mo cleaning stage in the Cu/Mo separation circuit at Highland Valley Copper mine. The results showed that a key factor to improve the overall circuit metallurgy was to control the size of the bubbles generated in the columns. When a large proportion of small (< 1 mm) bubbles were generated, the production rate of solids-in-concentrate increased by a factor of 4-5 compared to typical production figures without compromising concentrate quality. This increase in concentrate production rate reduced the circulating load in the circuit causing a significant increase of Mo recovery. A statistical analysis of historical production data showed a strong relationship between final concentrate production rate and overall Mo recovery. This relationship along with the results from this study indicated an opportunity to increase the recovery of Mo from 90% (typical) to 94% without downgrading concentrate grade. This 4% increase represents about 14,000 lbs or $500,000 worth of Mo each month at current metal prices.To provide a rational interpretation of the results, this study also examined whether the model of Gorain et al. (1997; 1998; 1999) could explain the increase of Mo recovery seemingly resulting from the decrease of bubble size. The data showed that the model predictions did not agree with the experimental data, i.e., for a given change (decrease) of bubble size, the predictions underestimated significantly the observed recovery increase. An interpretation based on the fundamental analysis of Finch and Dobby (1990) and Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2005) is proposed to explain the discrepancy between measurements and predictions obtained from Gorain et al.’s model.INTRODUCTIONIt is generally accepted that the size of the bubbles generated in a flotation cell – a concept usually referred to as “bubble size” – has a significant effect on metallurgical performance. However, a significant number of mineral processing practitioners often question, with valid reasons, the practical benefits of implementing process improvement strategies based on controlling bubble size. “Small” bubbles are often considered to be “favourable”, but how small they need to be for a particular case, or how to adjust operating conditions to control a target bubble size, or whether the bubbles need to be smaller in the first place are questions that usually remain unanswered. "Abstract- The Dixie Zone Au-Ag deposit is a low sulfidation (adularia-sericite) epithermal system located 1.4 km from the producing Ken Snyder mine (7.0 M oz Au equivalent reserve/resource), Midas Mining District, north-central Nevada. This WNW striking, steep south dipping, fault system is hosted by mid-Miocene (17 Ma to 14 Ma) felsic volcanic rocks that were erupted from a vent(s) to the northeast. The system was mineralized by approximately 250 ± 20°C (n = 86), near-neutral pH, ascending fluids of predominantly meteoric origin [volatile corrected salinity = 0.52 ± 0.35 eq.wt% NaCl (n = 86)]. Bulk analytical fluid inclusion gas chromatography identified a mineralizing fluid volatile composition of 99.68 ± 0.18 mole % H2O, 0.16 ± 0.09 mole % CO2, 0.11 ± 0.05 mole percent N2, 0.05 ± 0.04 mole % CH4, and 0.01 ± 0.01 mole % CnHn+i (n = 7). Sulfur species were not analyzed due to absorption within the chromatography system; however, a H2S concentration of 16 ppm to 160 ppm molar is estimated. The volatile content contributes approximately 50% of the microthermometrically measured freezing point depression. Cl- concentrations up to approximately 9000 ppm suggest an additional, probably magmatic, fluid component.Ascending fluids were channelled along approximately NW striking faults related to the same primary extension (17 Ma to 14 Ma) responsible for Nevada basin and range physiography. Boiling induced by CO2 effervescence led to precipitation of Au and Ag over a 150 m vertical interval. At the time, this interval was about 460 m below the water table (approximately 38 bars), but because of erosion, it is now within 90 m of the surface. A Ag:Au ratio of 25:1 has been calculated for the Dixie Zone."

The current version of the JORC Code was issued in 2004 and since that date the Australian Securities Exchange, in collaboration with JORC, has issued a number of companies? updates to provide guidance on various reporting issues. An interim review will be undertaken during 2010 to meld these updates with the current 2004 Code. This will be followed by a full review during 2010/11 covering all aspects of the Code and focusing particular attention on: ? clauses / guidelines relating to Exploration Results1, exploration targets and the reporting of historical estimates; ? issues relating to the Public Report2, including definition, the requirements for Competent Person sign-off, level of disclosure and mandatory requirements; ? guidance on techniques to quantify resource / reserve estimation uncertainty; ? the level of study required to convert Mineral Resources to Ore Reserves, and disclosure of prices and economic factors; ? expansion of the requirements for reporting of marketable material for bulk commodities; ? the use of language and tone that anticipates new and emerging technologies and techniques for the qualitative and quantitative measurements of data; and ? linkages to valuation and the valuation code (The VALMIN Code). Although the Canadian and Australian reporting regimes for public statements on Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral (Ore) Reserves are similar in intent and coverage, they differ in detail, sometimes substantially. Canadian requirements are generally more wide-ranging and prescriptive than Australian requirements, including in the need in many situations to publicly lodge a Technical Report, a requirement that does not exist in Australia. Australian-listed companies seeking to list in Canada, and Competent Persons seeking to act as Qualified Persons in Canada, need to ensure that they are fully conversant with Canadian regulations and how they differ from those in Australia.

"In preparation for the milling of a new nickel and copper mine ore, Nickel Rim South, Xstrata’s Strathcona Mill is undertaking numerous process improvement projects. Within the grinding circuit, several projects are under development and an automated grinding control strategy, consistent with the operating objectives, was identified as a key requirement. The grinding strategy is to maximize the throughput (quantitative objective) while maintaining the cyclone overflow within specifications (qualitative objective).This paper describes the implementation of a robust grinding control strategy using the existing control system. The implemented controls maintain the cyclone overflow density at the desired target, while continually optimising the rod mill feed rate to allow maximum throughput. This approach has the added benefit of improving the stability of the rougher flotation circuit down stream of the grinding and improving energy efficiency of the rod and primary ball mills. This paper discusses the comparison of the before and after the implementation of results.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding process is a size reduction operation used in the mining industry to liberate the valuable minerals from the gangue. Grinding is one of the most important and expensive processes in a concentrator (Xi-song, 2007; Pomerleau 2000; Najim 1995), often accounting for around half of the total operating costs in base metal concentrators (Wills, 1990), which has led to a focus on development and implementation of control and optimisation strategies. The grinding process prepares the ore for the subsequent concentration step, which for sulphide base metal operations, is predominantly flotation. The performance of the concentration (flotation) is very much determined by the feed characteristics of the slurry coming from grinding. The valuable minerals recovery process in flotation is very much influenced by the grinding process and the liberation of the desired minerals from the gangue minerals (McIvor, 1991).The true objective of grinding is to obtain a proper liberation of the minerals as defined by a particle size distribution referenced typically by d80 (80% passing size of product). Besides achieving the desired mineral d80 size, it is clearly desirable to produce as narrow a size distribution as possible to squeeze the maximum amount of the mineral value into the highest recovery region (McIvor, 1991). This is an important criterion for the mill in economically optimizing the grade and recovery for the concentrate product. It is important not to over or under grind, while keeping the specific comminution energy as low as possible (Nunez, 2005) to achieve the target liberation. In other words, maintain an optimal throughput depending on the ore conditions to the capacity of the grinding mills, while providing the flotation process with a constant and narrow size distribution, at a cut size selected to meet the metallurgical requirements (Bascur, 1991)."
