La Mine Louvicourt est une mine hautement mécanisée exploitant un gisement polymétallique avec des chantiers transversaux minés et remblayés selon une séquence primaire-secondaire. Dans certaines parties du gisement, il n'y avait qu'un accès à la coupe inférieure, car il n'était pas rentable d'avoir aussi un accès par coupe supérieure. Le minerai situé au-dessus des chantiers avec trous ascendants était considéré comme ressource non rentable par minage mécanisé. L'option de miner ces ressources avec des sous-niveaux avec accès par monterie alimak et forage long-trous de petit diamètre fût donc étudiée et démontra une rentabilité intéressante, particulièrement en considérant les tonnes ainsi minées comme tonnage supplémentaire au tonnage planifié. Dans ces chantiers, les détonateurs électroniques ont été très utiles et de plus, les coûts d'explosifs ont étés réduits considérablement par l'utilisation d'émulsion pompée en vrac.

"A multielement (Au, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, c-, Ag, As, Hg, Co, and S) geochemical rock sampling survey was carried out in 1977 in the Munro Township area of Ontario to assess the application of rock geochemistry for gold exploration in the region. Detailed sampling with analysis for gold and arsenic was done in 1986 in the immediate vicinity of the Croesus Mine.Samples of quartz veins and rock formations were taken in regional traverses and in more detail near old showings, prospect pits, and trenches. Quartz, graywacke, carbonate rock, and rhyolite contain the highest concentrations of gold for samples taken away from the old workings. Ultramafic rocks and gabbro have uniformly low gold. Basalt samples have slightly higher geometric means, but individual samples contain high gold concentrations. Multielement highs are mostly in mineralized quartz samples. Gold distribution is independent of other elements in most other rock types. Samples near old showings possess elevated concentrations of gold indicating that prospecting for individual mineral deposits by bedrock sampling is feasible. Concentrations of gold greater than 100 ppb are mostly within 30 m of old workings. Those samples which contain greater than 1000 ppb Au were obtained from quartz veins, basalt, graywacke, and rhyolite.High concentrations of gold were not notably concentrated near the Contact Fault although some anomalous samples came from near and on both sides of the fault. Arsenic concentrations are elevated near the Contact Fault. Detailed sampling near the Croesus Mine suggests that gold was introduced with faulting, alteration and quartz veining. Gold and arsenic have been added to the wallrock in the vicinity of the main veins."

"IntroductionThe Republic of Indonesia is a developing Southeast Asian country that unites the Indian and Pacific oceans, and spreads across nearly 14000 islands with a total land area of about two million km-. The distance across the country approximates the distance across Canada: Indonesia extends for more than 6000 km from the northern tip of Sumatra to the eastern border of Irian Jaya in the middle of New Guinea. With a population of around 180million, Indonesia is one of the world's most populous countries. A mix of 366 ethnic groups populates the country and there are some 250 distinct languages spoken. The topography of Indonesia generally is quite rugged because of its numerous volcanos. For example, the island of Java has 121 volcanos, of which 15 rise above 3000 m and another 44 reach heights between 2000 m and 3000 m.Indonesia has a diversified resource base, with plentiful energy resources (coal, oil, gas and hydroelectric), significant mineral deposits, large timber potential and a developed system of agricultural commodity production and export. A high proportion of the primary resources are on the sparsely populated islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, whereas 7'3 of Indonesia's people reside on Java, or on 70/0 of the country's land area. Around Jakarta in western Java the population density is around 8000 per krn2. This contrasts with less than nine people per km- on Sulawesi (Fig. I)."

"Major industrial restructuring, which started to manifest itself in the mature economies of the Western World and Japan in the 1970s, will accelerate in the 1980s and 1990s. Conventional heavy manufacturing industries will continue to lose ground to lighter processing/assembly operations and the new wave of high technology, information and service sectors. The decline in heavy manufacturing has severely impacted on the steel industries of Western Europe, the U.S.A . and Japan.World trade in metallurgical coal has shifted correspondingly, with declining demand in the mature developed countries being only partially offset by large increases in the steel intensity of the newly-industrialized countries (NICs) of the Far East, Latin America and, to a more limited extent, the Middle East and Africa. These trends will be accentuated in future years with direct implications for the distribution of metallurgical coal trade. This paper discusses, in quantitative terms, such changes in the 1980s and 1990s, and examines the implications for, and impacts on, Canadian metallurgical coal exporters.IntroductionThe twenty-year period from the early 1950 s to the early 1970s was characterized by inexorable growth in consumer demand and industrial expansion in most of the advanced countries of the western world. Long- term forecasting during this period typically used linear extrapolation techniques which , despite their simplicity, invariably ended up predicting future demand and production level s with uncanny accuracy. Times have changed!The last decade has been characterized by a n abysmal failure of our economies to respond to simple long-term, linear growth patterns. We appear to have entered a new world in transition, where we can observe a wave of dying or sunset industries reluctantly being submerged by a wave of emerging or sunrise industries.This paper is aimed a t examining the evidence for long-term industrial restructuring trend s. For want of a better word, these so -called, megatrends are then used to predict future demand level s and spatial distribution of steel development and , hence, metallurgical coal trade. It is tempting to correlate the decline in economic activity in the western world with the first Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' (OPEC) crisis of 1973. This crisis was probably no more than the straw that broke the camel's back, as the megatrends and embryo s of major industrial restructuring were already evident. Today these megatrends are merely more apparent and transparent than they were ten years ago.While the concept of industrial restructuring is the new economic buzz word, the process was at work, to a lesser degree even throughout the period of strong economic growth of the post-Second World War boom. Many people still remain convinced that our present-day sluggish economy is just part o f the typical , though rather more prolonged, recessionary cycle. Yet, we have always been part of a dynamic economic system and industry throughout history has been the subject of a continuous process of evolution, restructuring and reconstitution . Now the time is ripe to examine the evidence for such restructuring in order to develop coherent policies of adjustment in this transition from one industrial regime to another."

""Pirate"" part manufacturers invariably offer lucrative discounts which are most appealing to the average purchasing agent whose responsibility it is to save money. Unfortunately, in most cases, there is a tradeoff involved; when the price drops so does the quality, which can adversely affect owning and operating costs. Unless totally obvious, ""original"" or ""pirate"" part metamorphosis requires scrupulous analysis by competent individuals.Hydrostatic transmissions have been used successfully for many year s in various industries. They found their way into mobile underground loaders in the early seventies and have since become very unpopular in mining circles due to their apparent ""inherent unreliability"" and near ""prohibitive"" repair costs. "This paper presents the results of a detailed feasibility study carried out to investigate whether a low-grade deep underground mine of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd., closed since 1975, could be made more productive and profitable by the introduction of new mining technology. For this purpose, recent advances in mine design and development concepts, larger and better designed machines, such as hydraulic drills, high-pressure down-the-hole machines, LHDs, new blasting concepts, more efficient and improved stoping methods, and ground control technology were considered. Technical and economic analyses incorporated the latest computer-based techniques. The mine was reopened in 1979 and the paper concludes with an assessment of actual progress and performance compared with that planned and forecast.IntroductionThe East Mine orebody, located between the Falconbridge Mine and Inco's Cryderman Mine in the Sudbury District of Ontario, has been in production since 1956. From 1956 to 1978, about 5.6 million tons of ore had been mined from this ore zone. The ore body is low grade and was developed as a cut-and-fill operation. Due to high operating costs, the mine has been shut down several times during economic downturns. The latest closure was in 1975 due to a lower demand for metal.In 1978, investigations were initiated to assess the economic and technical feasibility of mining this ore using new developments in mining technology. In this study, consideration was given to the application of bulk mining methods with a potential for higher productivity, trackless development utilizing efficient LHD machines and hydraulic drills, new blasting and fragmentation concepts, and new ground control technology. Advanced computer techniques, such as finite element, for mine design and rate of return with discounted cash flow analyses for the economic comparison- of various mining options were utilized for a rapid and comprehensive assessment during the feasibility stage."

Ce secteur s'étend de la municipalité de Grenville jusqu'au pare du Mont-Tremblant (nord de St-Jovite). D'autres secteurs favorables a 'exploration pour la wollastonite ont été délimités dans les regions du Lac-Saint-Jean, de Shawinigan et de la Gatineau. Neuf categories litho-structurales de gites de wollastonite furent identifiées. L'importance d'un système ou vert pour la formation des gîtes de hautes teneurs fut établie. Un guide de prospection pour la wollastonite propre à la province tectonique de Grenville fut développé. Plusieurs des indices sont prometteurs et mériteraient des travaux de raise en valeur afin de determiner s'ils représentent une source de wollastonite exploitable à profit. Lac-Saint-Jean, Shawinigan and Gatineau areas. Deposits may be classified into nine categories depending on their relationship to intrusive rocks, discordant or concordant contacts with the host rocks, morphology, and major structural controls. Deposits consist mainly of wollastonite, calcite and clinopyroxene. They may contain one or several of the following minerals: feldspar, scapolite, quartz, titanite sulphides, zoisite, clinozoisite, garnet, idocrase and prehnite. Wollastonite content may reach over 70%. Some deposits are associated with graphite veins. Better understanding of the geology, combined with the proposed classification provides new exploration guide for wollastonite. Several deposits have grades of economic interest. Further work is needed to determine if any of these deposits can be exploited for profit."

Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) are new generation engineering materials that possess superior physical and mechanical properties compared to nonreinforced alloys. However, the presence of abrasive ceramic reinforcements in the ductile matrix causes severe tool wear and premature tool failure. Flank wear was found to be the dominant wear mode while the main wear mechanism was abrasion. Analysis of the cutting tools using scanning electron microscopy has shown that both two body and three body abrasion are operational during machining MMCs. A methodology for predicting the tool flank wear progression during bar turning ofMMCs was presented in an earlier paper [1]. In the proposed model, the wear volume due to two body and three body abrasion mechanisms was formulated. Then, the flank wear rate was quantified by considering the tool geometry in 3D turning. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the contribution of two body and three body abrasion towards the tool wear volume during cutting MMCs.

"IntroductionSince the mid -1960s, automatic control of grinding circuits has become the rule, to avoid losses attributable to frequent circuit upsets associated with uncontrolled disturbances such as ore hardness variations. Higher capital costs of grinding equipment and corresponding operating costs-especially with respect to energy consumption-are major factors that continue to stimulate interest in grinding control.Grinding circuit control strategies depend upon the control objectives defined by the processing plant and are subject to constraints such as: maintain final per cent solids within some range, do not transport steel ball s out of the discharge trunnion, or do not overflow or empty the pump box and so on. Constraints depend on the nature of equipment employed within the grinding circuit and may actually determine the characteristics of the control scheme. Typical control objectives are:1. Maintain final particle size at set point by ,a. manipulation of fresh feed rate with circulating load maintained by manipulation of pump box water addition rate, orb. manipulation of pump box water addition rate with circulating load maintained by manipulation of fresh feed rate, where the methodology utilized to accomplish either (a) or (b) is dependent upon equipment/circuit constraints such as the availability of a variable speed pump.2. Maintain circuit throughput at a maximum by,a. manipulation of fresh feed rate subject to constraints on final particle size and variables such as power draw, circulating load and mill overload.3. Maintain mill load at set point by a. manipulation of fresh feed rate subject to constraints such as on power draw.4. Maintain mill power draw at set point bya . manipulation of fresh feed rate subject to mill load constraints. Often, a grinding control objective is dictated by the recovery vs fineness-of-grind characteristic that exists for downstream separation circuits. When recovery is relatively insensitive to size, maximum throughput in the grinding circuit is advantageous.The purpose of this paper is to review control strategies for primary ball mill grinding circuits, rod mill/ball mill grinding circuits and semi-autogenous grinding mill circuits. Primary sensors employed are highlighted and modern trends are documented briefly."

"The objective of this paper is to describe the potential impact of inter-provincial competition f or new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. It will be shown that the ramifications of such actions are potentially severe, especially since the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which Canada purportedly possesses a significant degree of market power. More specifically, the paper addresses the impact of possible expansions in New Brunswick, Manitoba and, perhaps, Saskatchewan. The findings suggest that such initiatives could result in substantial excess capacity and the dissipation of monopoly rents. In summary, given the market structure of the industry, it is unlikely that the employment and economic effects associated with industry expansion will offset the loss in national welfare attributable to rent dissipation.IntroductionThe objective of this paper is to discuss the potential impact of inter-provincial competition for new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. "Cryogenic engineering is concerned with components and machines which operate for long periods of time at temperatures within a few degrees of absolute zero. The absence of a ductile-brittle transition is thus the prime component of the specification for a suitable low-temperature alloy. The word "" cryo"" means ""frost-forming"" , and this leads to the second component of the alloy specification, which is resistance to corrosion in humid atmospheres. Further, although most early applications of low-temperature alloys were limited to the storage or transportation of liquified gases, an increasing proportion of alternative energy storage and conversion technologies are being based on the availability of high-field superconducting solenoids. The third basic component of the specification for a low-temperature alloy is thus the absence of a low-temperature ferromagnetic transition.Although the firs t two of these components of the specification can be met by using austenitic stainless steels, many of these supposedly "" non-magnetic"" alloys have been found to undergo martensitic transformations to ferromagnetic phases at very low temperatures. In addition, steels which remain structurally stable may still exhibit other magnetic transitions, e.g. to antiferromagnetic or superparamagnetic states. The successful application of these alloys in cryogenic engineering has thus required an initial basic study of the types of magnetic transition that can occur in such concentrated solid solutions, followed by a more applied study directed at an alloy formulation which will induce beneficial magnetic states at low temperatures."

"In 1982, a study was initiated to investigate relationships between bonus and accidents in Quebec underground mines. In 1983, the study was expanded to include the impact of age and experience on accidents.The paper will describe the methodology followed in gathering information at ten mines from three mining camps in the Province of Quebec, and its transfer to data banks for subsequent treatment. Multifactorial analysis of nine variable files for the ten mines has shown: that age, experience and seniority are linked; that total working hours are tied with overtime; that bonus is linked to the main activity of the miner, and not to accidents. The most tangible factors affecting accidents seem to be the introductory training and subsequent retraining at regular intervals."

"The geometry of the terrain topography before and after the failure are the essential factors for analyzing a landslide and for the design of remedial works. This paper presents a method to determine these factors, considering that the determination of the slide surface profile is difficult and costly using traditional methods and the pre-slide topography data is often not available. The presented method to locate the 3-dimensional geometry of the slide surface is based upon determining the slide surface in 2- dimensional vertical sections. This method utilizes post-slide topography of the area to determine the pre-slide topography and uses equations to estimate the pre-slide situation using a statistical process applied to points located on the sliding mass. This method is tested on the Maskun landslide in Iran. The results indicate the applicability of the proposed method to obtain the key factors for the back analysis of a landslide in a cost effective manner.INTRODUCTIONProbably the most reliable method of determining the strength of soil and rock mass is to back analyze a failed or failing slope (Caia et al. 2007; Wyllie & Mah, 2004). This method is used in geotechnics for estimating geotechnical parameters of the rock and soil mass (Sakurai et al., 2003; Frayssines and Hantz, 2009; Cepuritis et al. 2010), but it requires that the failure mode is well established and that there is complete and precise information available on the slide surface and the sliding mass (Sjöberg, 1996). Measurement of the slope profile before failure provides the basic information required for a back analysis (Hock & Bray, 1981). The post-slide topography is another key factor. The back analysis process for determining the actual strength parameters of soil or a decomposed rock mass after a landslide requires knowledge of the sliding mass geometry, both before and after the sliding event. Many studies are reported in the literature about the application of back analysis for determining geotechnical and geomechanical parameters of rock and soil mass (Sakurai et al., 2003; Cepuritis et al. 2010; Frayssines and Hantz, 2009, Hussain and Stark, 2011), but they generally present little information about the geometry of the slide surface, and the weight of rock and soil mass that slid, although these factors are the most important parameters for back analysis process. Liang and Xue-song (2012) determined the slip surface having the minimum factor of safety (called critical slip surface in deterministic analysis of slopes) and the slip surface with the minimum reliability index (called critical reliability slip surface), but they have not considered the actual profile and geometry of the slide surface. Rocscience (2013) proposes the back analysis option in the Slide software for slope stability study, but it requires an imposed slide surface as input; alternatively, one can estimate by a finite element analysis the surface with the minimum factor of safety. However, this estimated surface is very likely different from the actual sliding surface, considering the uncertainties in input data of the finite element method."

De même, l'infrastructure sous terre a été proposée en tenant compte de ce fait important; d'ailleurs, l'excavation de deux puits circulaires dont l'un est en beton et acier et l'autre exclusivement en béton en témoigne. De plus, la plupart des cheminées principales qui furent excavées sous terre sont de forme circulaire.L 'exploitation du gisement s'effectue par une méthode chantier ouvert (abattage par longs trous), remblaye immédiatement âpres avec un mélange de roche stérile et ciment. Un taux de minage de 1750 tonnes par jour est requis pour assurer la production.L 'utilisation d'une technologie de pointe tels: les ventilateurs et les portes de ventilation sous terre contrôlées de la surface, un système de relèves macroséismiques, de chargeuses-navettes contrôles à distance, en passant par le dessin et la planification assistes par ordinateur nous permet d'optimiser l'exploitation du gisement Ansil.IntroductionEtant donne la grande profondeur a laquelle le gisement Ansil se situe, no us avons à mettre en place une infrastructure souterraine et de surface d'envergure pour nous permettre d'atteindre nos objectifs d'exploitation.Infrastructure de surfaceLa mine Ansil dispose d'une infrastructure de surface d'importance possédant une grande capacité (Fig. I). Les deux facteurs qui furent déterminant pour le dimensionnement des infrastructures furent le taux d'extraction de 1990 t/jour et la profondeur a laquelle I 'exploitation s'effectue, puis que cette dernière affecte le temps de cycle et la capacité de hissage.La première composante principale de I 'infrastructure de surface est un treuil de production a 2 tambours de 3.65 m de diamètre et de 2.0 m de largeur chacun. Ce treuil de marque Fullerton, Hodgart & Barclay construit en 1970, opère avec 2 moteurs de 930 kW a une vitesse de 700 m/min. et il a une capacité maximale de 32000 kg. Deux câbles d'acier de 45 mm de diarnètre et de 160 000 kg de résistance a la rupture servant au hissage des bennes d'une capacité de 12 tonnes. De plus, un moteur/générateur de 3000 kW (M.G. Set) raccorde au treuil de production sert a stabliser son alimentation électrique."

"Mathematically, the proposed formula is: ""Human Effectiveness + Technological Improvement = Success in the Nineties"". A brief review is made of geology, level of technology, management and labour situations, and range of production costs in coal producing countries. This comparison shows keen competition for Canadian coals, especially from the People's Republic of China, South Africa and Australia. Domestic competition comes from nuclear energy, hydro-electric generation, natural gas (if permitted) and eastern United States coal.The huge increase in the size and power of surface mining equipment in the last forty years led to modern large-scale open pit mining. While conventional truck and shovel operations will continue to be widely used, more continuous mining and conveying systems will be installed as pits become deeper and haul distances longer. Computer systems will become more sophisticated and their applications more widespread, leading to higher productivity and closer control of all operations and equipment performances and to partial or complete automation of certain operations.The underground revival will be driven by a new generation of mining people, cooperating to produce over 3 million t/y from 300 m longwall faces retreating over 3 km resulting in mine productivities of over 40 tonnes per man shift, as is already achieved in several mines throughout the world. Continuous operation using on-line control system will assist in consistent production with availabilities over 75%."

"The behaviour of minerals in the Mount Wright spiral circuit was investigated to find methods of improving iron oxide mineral liberation and recovery. The feeds, concentrates and tailings from rougher, cleaner and recleaner spirals in one mill line were sampled before and after the sizing screen openings were reduced from 2 mm to 1.6 mm. Sized fractions of each sample were analyzed with the MP-SEM-IPS image analysis system at CANMET to determine mineral quantities and liberation characteristics of the iron oxide minerals. Mass balance techniques were used to calculate stream recoveries of iron, silica, total iron oxide minerals, hema¬tite, goethite, quartz, ferromagnesian silicates, and liberated and locked total iron oxide minerals for each sieve fraction.The reduction of the sizing screen openings increased the ap¬parent liberation of the total iron oxide minerals in the screen undersize from 89% to 94% and raised the over-all iron recovery from 84.4% to 85.3%. Apparent liberation of iron oxide minerals in the cleaner sand also increased from 70% to 85%, but the – 75 µm fraction re¬mained the only fraction containing an acceptable amount of liber¬ated iron oxide minerals in each case. Due to limitations of spiral and grinding efficiency it is recommended that the cleaner sand be screened at 300 m, the +300 m fraction be reground, and the – 300 p.m fraction be rerouted to the rougher spirals.The amount of fine liberated iron oxide minerals (– 106 m) lost in the tailings was 46 TPH in mill line 3. This value represents 41 wt % of the free fine iron oxide minerals, or 7 wt % of the total iron oxide minerals in the spiral feed. Further work is needed to investigate the possibility of recovering this material by other methods.Middling iron particles (010 50%) and presumably free gangue in the size range –300+ 75 m tend to be recovered by spirals by entrapment."

"The whole work carried out both in situ and in laboratory by a research group of the West German collieries is presented. This work has led to a design method of steel arch supports for gate roadways that gives full satisfaction in this particular coalfield. The method accounts for mining depth, the mining system (advancing or retreating), thickness of the coal seam and other parameters.Full statistics are then given on gate roadway supports of the ECCS (European Community for Coal and Steel) coalfields. They were collected by the author in order to show that the West German method can be applied to other coalfields as the long wall systems which are generally being used are very similar. Design calculations are conducted for each coalfield's case. They show that the method would have been able to predict in most cases the support actually used.Utilization of the design method is recommended to the Cape Breton Development Corporation 's mine operators because mining conditions, even though different from European ones, present a number of similarities which make it possible to apply the design method to their particular case.This procedure might be profitable in mines facing support problems in their levels and for any planning of future projects"

"This paper presents and discusses the results of a detailed study conducted on the subject of energy consumption in the comminution of industrial minerals. The study was based on pilot circuit testing, plant operating data collection, detailed equipment data and literature research. The areas covered by investigations include: high efficiency classification; air classifiers for cement grinding circuits; grinding aids in dry grinding; and dry grinding circuit control based on particle size measurement. Results obtained indicate a large potential for the reduction of energy consumption, in particular in the cement clinker grinding circuits. Better classification techniques and correct application of grinding additives can significantly reduce power used per tonne of product and also substantially increase grinding circuit output."

"Atikokan is 200 km west of Thunder Bay and earned its mining fame from the discovery of the Steep Rock Iron Range in the late 1930s. Gold, however, was discovered in the Atikokan and Mine Centre areas in the late 1800s and eventually led to one of Ontario's first gold camps, and a total production of approximately 52,000 oz of gold and 174,000 oz of silver from 218,000 tons milled.The general geology of the area consists of Early Precambrian rocks of the Wabigoon and Quetico subprovinces, separated by the east-trending Quetico Fault. The Wabigoon Subprovince, to the north, consists of metavolcanics, minor metasediments and granitic batholiths. The Quetico Subprovince consists of metasediments and granitoids. Small ultramafic plutons occur throughout the metasediments.Within a 50-km radius of Atikokan, more than 50 gold occurrences, prospects and past producers have been discovered since the 18oos. The Atikokan Gold Study performed by the Ontario Geological Sur vey (Wilkinson, 1980, 1982) defined three types of gold mineralization in which gold is concentrated in quartz and quartz-carbonate veins:I) Metavolcanic-Hosted, Stratabound Type-associated with altered felsic fragmental units and chemical sedimentary rocks; possible gold mineralization source rocks. The mineralization is due to metamorphogenic (epigenetic) enrichment. Associated with dynamic metamorphism events and/or felsic intrusive events.2) Marmion Lake Batholith Type-occurs within the gneissic core of the batholith associated with north east-trending lineaments, representing faults or shear zones. Mineralized veins are related to several periods of deformation and shearing, suggesting that metamorphogenic veins were produced during dynamic metamorphism.3) Contact Zone Type -occurs in the contact zone rocks between gneissic batholiths and meta volcanic belts. Hydrothermal solutions produced during several deformational periods acted to leach and concentrate gold mineralization. Localized, discontinuous shear zones host the epigenetic (metamorphogenic) veins.Twenty-one properties in the area were mapped and sampled, and researched petrographically and geochemically. Geological data from the Atikokan Economic Geologist Program of the Ontario Geological Survey are used in discussing the types of mineralization, genetic models, and exploration targets and techiques."
