"In order to develop a new pyrometallurgical process for eliminating detrimental arsenic and antimony from the impurity-rich matte produced from copper concentrate, and for treating the occasionally generated speiss in nonferrous smelting processes, the phase relations in the Fe-Cu-S-As-Sb system saturated with carbon at 1473 K were investigated. The distribution of elements between the condensed phases at the miscibility gap, where three equilibrated phases of iron-rich alloy, copper-rich alloy, and matte coexist, were also studied. The investigation was carried out by performing a series of laboratory scale experiments in an electrical furnace at 1473 K, followed by a quenching method on the final stage. The samples obtained from the experiments were analyzed by using Inductively Couple Plasma (ICP), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Carbon Infrared Spectrometry (CIS) techniques.The results were compared with previous investigations for the Fe-Cu-S-As-C and Fe-Cu-S-Sb-C systems and discussed on the basis of the molar fraction distribution for both arsenic and antimony in the matte phase at five different matte grades. It is expected that by using this phase separation technique it might be feasible both, the cleaning of a complex copper matte and the elimination of arsenic and iron together with an acceptable amount of antimony into the iron-rich alloy phase, which can be discarded as a harmless and smaller deposit."

"Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining operates a uranium mine at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan. The project consists of one open pit and one underground mining operation along with a full-scale milling installation.The underground stoping operations are of the narrow vein type and are done between two levels 50 m apart. The mining method is undercut with concrete backfilling. Cuts are 3.5 m in height and can be as narrow as 1.4 m in width.Stoping operations are mechanized utilizing a CT-500E electric Microscoop marketed in Canada by Teledyne. The machine is only 85 cm in width and does all the mucking in stopes. Ore passes are provided in stope roughly every 40 m to 50 m.This paper describes the utilization of the CT-500E Microscoop in the company's underground operations and provides performance data related to the experience.IntroductionThe Amok Ltd ./Cluff Mining operation is located in the northwestern corner of Saskatchewan. The project started in 1980 with open pit mining and milling operations. In 1983, an underground mining operation began production . Today, the Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining installation produces 800 tonnes of uranium per year , which originates from both the open pit and the underground mine at about the same proportion."

"No Canadian or his family is likely to escape the effects of proposals for pension reform tabled on October 9, 1986 by Finance Minster Michael Wilson. New tax rules are proposed for Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), company pensions, and other forms of retirement plans. Draft legislation is expected to be released in the first half of 1987.IntroductionOver two years ago on February, 15, 1984, Mark Lalonde, then Finance Minister, tabled two White Papers. The first, Action Plan for Pension Reform, proposed improvements to the public pension system and increases in the minimum pension benefits standards to be mandated by the federal government. Since then changes have been made to the Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplement and Canada Pension Plan programs. Also, benefits provided under pension plans subject to the federal Pension Benefits Standards Act have been improved significantly.The companion paper, Building Better Pensions f or Canadians, proposed to standardize and, in many cases, improve retirement savings through private plans by revising the tax rule s. The tax proposals in the Notice of Ways and Means released by Finance Minister Wilson on October 9. 1986 implement, with modifications, the tax treatment of retirement savings originally proposed in the May 1985 budget in response to that second paper."

The mixer that is commonly encountered in hydro metallurgical operations consists of a single turbine and tank combination. However, it would be advantageous to examine some common solvent extraction mixing systems in the light of the fundamentals of chemical reactor design. The basic concepts of reactor design are commonly used in the chemical industry, and it should not be too difficult to apply them to solvent extraction. The factors that affect the engineering design of a reactor are: the reacting system; the type of reaction; and the configuration of the reactor. The reaction system in solvent extraction consists of a heterogeneous liquid phase, involving two immiscible liquids. It is essential f or the process that the reactor product can be separated efficiently in the subsequent settler. The type of reaction in solvent extraction system may be quite complex, and the picture is complicated by the presence of competing and side reactions. The reactors themselves have been generally continuous stirred tanks, and the nature of the mixer-settler makes it unlikely that the pumping mixer can be dispensed with. However, it appears that there should be some definite advantages to a system of stirred reactors in series. The kinetic experiments which are carried out should have the definition of optimum reaction conditions as one of their goals. The data obtained from these experiments must also be applicable to the design of reaction equipment. Reactor selection and design is often a unique problem for each chemical process, and does not lend itself to a systematic general approach. However, the application of chemical and physical principles to mixer design in solvent extraction should result in practical, more efficient plants.

"Hydrometallurgy of copper ores typically involve acid leaching followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). EW is the final purification stage in which a voltage is applied across two electrodes causing the copper ions to reduce and deposit on the cathode. Applied voltages are near 2 volts with current densities around 300 amps/m2. In this study, research was undertaken to decrease the energy consumed in the EW process. To do this, various cell designs were constructed and tested in which a membrane was used to separate the cathode and anode compartments with concentrated solution from SX serving as catholyte and raffinate from SX serving as anolyte. Therefore, copper in the concentrated solution would be deposited on the cathode while ferrous in the raffinate would be oxidized to ferric at the anode. Because it is assumed that ferric acid leaching is used, resulting ferric would be recycled to the leaching process. A positive side effect of the envisioned process would be the elimination of oxygen evolution at the anode and thus the prevention of acid-misting. After a cell design was selected, it was used to test a number of variables: flowrate, concentration, temperature, ion-exchange membrane, and applied voltage. Following experiments in which variable ranges were determined, statistical modeling was conducted using STATEASE software. Optimal results indicate the voltage can be decreased to 1.5-1.7 volts with current densities of 300-400 amps/m2. Significant reduction in the energy consumption was accomplished by reducing the applied voltage. Furthermore, current efficiencies and copper production rates was increased by application of the membrane.INTRODUCTIONLeaching of copper ores is achieved using mostly sulfuric acid. During the period May 15 ? 17, 2006 four fatalities occurred at #1 Waste Dump, at Teck Cominco?s Sullivan mine located at the city boundary of Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada. The fatalities occurred in the sump of a water monitoring station. The Chief Inspector of Mines and his staff immediately responded to the incident. The team worked collaboratively with the Teck Ltd. Trail Hazmat team, a consultant group from Rescan Ltd. and other Teck operation and technical staff. Sampling in and around the water monitoring station in the days following the fatalities showed that exposure to a depleted oxygen environment was the immediate cause of the fatalities. The sump located at the base of the shed was hydraulically connected to a French (coarse rock) drain, located at the toe of the covered waste dump. This presentation will briefly review the immediate cause of the accident, the investigation, a brief introduction to the work of the Sullivan Technical panel and the British Columbia government?s response to the incident and the recommendations of the Coroner?s inquest.

Gases rich in sulfur dioxide generated as a by-product of smelting and converting operations of copper concentrate contain selenium apart from zinc, lead, copper, cadmium, bismuth, antimony, and arsenic. The gaseous stream is heat exchanged in waste heat boiler, dust collected in electrostatic precipitator followed by cleaning in reverse jet scrubber to remove fumes, halogens and fine dust before passing to DCDA Monsanto catalytic converter to produce commercial grade sulfuric acid. The gas cleaning section of the acid plant uses water to scrub the smelting gases. During scrubbing, precipitated solids, known as sludge, settles at the bottom of the reverse jet scrubber containing 30 to 40 wt% copper and selenium up to 40 wt% selenium. In the existing process, the sludge collected during scrubber cleaning process is directly recycled to the smelter for copper recovery. However, the selenium is expected to again vaporize due to high oxidation potential during smelting and converting, causing accumulation of selenium in sludge. In present investigation, a roasting process has been developed to recover the selenium from acid plant sludge before charging it to smelter for copper recovery. Selenium is associated with copper in acid plant sludge as copper selenide, as determined by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Thermodynamic and thermo-gravimetry study revealed that the copper selenide phase present in the sludge was amenable to oxidation at 600°C forming oxides of copper and selenium (Cu-Se-O). However, the dissociation of selenium from the copper oxide was made possible by sulfatation using sulfur dioxide between 450°C to 600°C, resulting into the formation of CuSO4(s) and SeO2(g). Lab scale experiments were carried out in vertical tubular furnace to determine the optimum roasting conditions with respect to roasting time, temperature and molar ratio of O2:SO2. Using these optimum conditions, selenium up to 90 wt. % in the form of SeO2 vapors could be recovered from the acid plant sludge in a large scale commercial roaster. Roasted sludge free from selenium and containing oxides and sulfates of copper could now be recycled in the smelter for copper recovery. INTRODUCTION There is an increasing demand for minor metals due to their use in innovative technologies. Similarly, the increase in demand for selenium is expected due to disruption in sectors related to renewable energy and photovoltaic battery. Selenium is a chalcogen and a non-metal with black or red crystalline appearance. Selenium is used in the glass industry to decolorize glass and to make red-colored glasses and enamels. It is also used in solar cells and as a photographic toner. Selenium is used as a brasses in stainless steel to improve its machinability. Selenium sulfide is used in anti-dandruff shampoos. In spite of the toxicity of its compounds, selenium is also an essential trace element for humans and animals. Selenium occasionally occurs free in nature, but more often occurs as selenides of iron, lead, silver and copper. There is an urgent need for the development of new methods for selenium recovery from the existing resources. Commercially, selenium is obtained only from anode mud produced during electrolytic refinery of copper.

"More copper concentrates are treated in flash smelting furnaces than by any other process, and such furnaces are located in most of the world's major copper producing areas. Except for perhaps two furnaces treating chalcocite-type materials, little difference is seen between the grades of the concentrates being smelted. Within individual smelters, even less variation in feed grades is found. This is both accidental and intended. Many furnaces treat concentrates from captive ores, and these tend to be of relatively constant composition over long periods. Toll smelting operations blend concentrates to ensure delivery of feeds of fixed compositions to their furnaces to avoid upset conditions. Matte grades vary between flash smelting furnaces, but most commonly, these are the result of differences in operating practices rather than because of differences in concentrate grades. This paper reviews an industrial flash smelting test in which the copper content of the furnace feed was intentionally altered over a wide range. IntroductionExcept in a few copper mining regions of the world, the principal copper mineral is chalcopyrite (CuFeSz). This results in the almost universal production of concentrates containing 25070 to 30% copper (and similar amounts of iron and sulphur). Many operators of copper flash furnaces spend their entire metallurgical careers smelting concentrates of essentially fixed grades. This is true both of smelters treating concentrates from captive mines and those processing concentrates on a toll basis. From the production staff's point-of-view, the less variation in grades seen by the furnace, the better. Fixed analyses of concentrates and constant feed rates produce consistent quantities of matte at a consistent grade for processing by the converters. The result is, even in smelters treating a variety of concentrates, efforts are expended in sampling and blending to ensure feeds of relatively uniform compositions being sent to the furnaces."

"The concept of employing a project management team to coordinate all aspects of the construction of a new resource development has gained wide acceptance. This team can be formed from within the staff of large mining companies or contracted from major engineering firms and consultants. The mandate of the project managers usually terminates on successful startup of the operation. For frontier mineral developments in the Canadian Arctic or in the developing countries, startup and the initial year of operation represents the period in which the project is most vulnerable to technical, political and managerial problems. A complete change of the management team or the retention of the construction project managers and the resulting cost combined with the breakdown of organizational accountability within the operating staff .are unnecessary management problems.Independent project management services provide the commitment necessary to sustain the continuity of management through all project phases. Efficiency and the ability to make decisions quickly are characteristics of the many successful small mining companies. These qualities are necessary in the project management group, which will be responsible for up to 90% of the preproduction costs.Continuous project management in the construction and operational phases of a mineral development are common in the iron ore industry, but remain anomalous in the base metal, energy mineral and industrial mineral fields.The Nanisivik project on Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic is used to illustrate the advantages of total project management through construction and operation.Total project management has further potential for foreign interests and financial and utility organizations desirous of participating in the Canadian mining industry, but with no direct involvement in the construction or operating management. Participation agreements in the operating phase of a project can be negotiated to have management fees related to both the production and the profits of the enterprise."

"INTRODUCTIONInco Ltd. has ten operating mines in the Sudbury district. Over the last ten years mining methods have changed at Inco with special emphasis on the introduction of bulk mining replacing conventional mechanized cut-and-f ill and undercut-and-fill methods. At the same time, the technology and size of LH D equipment has also progressed to meet the demands of bulk mining. This paper will concentrate on various aspects of the introduction and operation of electric LHD equipment a t Inco Limited, Ontario Division. BackgroundInco Limited received its first electric 2 cu. yd capacity LHD in July 1975 at Creighton Mine. The unit was tested pulling shrinkage stope muck and then was moved to a mechanized cut and- fill complex on 6600 Level. The electric scooptram received quick acceptance from the operators, due to its quiet operation and low heat generation, in a relatively hot operating environment. Although there are only two of these units operating a t present, this initial favourable experience, both in cost and efficiency, led to the development and purchase of electric scooptrams of the 5 cu. yd size. There are currently eleven 5 cu . yd electric LHDs in operation.The most recent development a t Inco is the move to yet larger electric LHDs in the 8 cu. yd size. The first electric ""Eight"" has now been in operation at Copper Cliff South Mine for over a year. This unit has the distinction of being the first one of its kind in service in North America. At the time of writing, there were ten 8 cu. yd electric ma chines operating in Inco's Ontario Division Mines, with three on order."

This month, Tax Notes examines tax legislation from a different angle, and sees some bright spots.The following article is based on a paper presented by the author at the International Gold Symposium in Rio de Janeiro in August 1989Introduction""No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.”With one federal government, ten provincial governments, and two territorial governments all claiming to have constitutional rights to tax and otherwise regulate Canada's mining industry, and with each of these thirteen governments pursuing their respective rights with some vigor, government involvement in one way or another is an accepted way of life in the industry. While one's initial reaction to government involvement in an industry might be one of scepticism or fear, generally speaking the federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada tend to be pro-mining. They recognize the importance of the mining industry to Canada, especially in terms of job creation and exports. It is not surprising, then, to find that an array of valuable fiscal incentives are available to the industry through federal and provincial legislation.This paper summarizes the principal incentives that are inherent in Canada's tax legislation, as well as the Canadian Exploration Incentive Program. Although it is beyond the scope of this paper to deal with all of the incentives that are available, it is noted that various forms of federal or provincial assistance are also available outside of specific legislation, through negotiation with government departments. This latter type of assistance is generally directed toward helping with the cost of infrastructure such as roads or hydro lines, or Jess often toward loan guarantees or similar financing assistance."

"Pilot precipitator tests were conducted at Noranda's Horne Smelter in late 1978 to evaluate methods of improving converter dust collection efficiency. A bout 35 Nms/min. of converter off-gas were isokineticatly diverted from the converter flue to the pilot precipitator leased from Flakt (Canada) Ltd., consisting of three fields, one transformer-rectifier set per field and 77-m2 total collecting plate area. The effects of gas volume flow rate and conditioning the gas with sulphur trioxide and/or additional moisture were tested. II was found that gas flow rate and moisture level had the most pronounced effect on collection efficiency. Based on a techno-economic assessment of different options for improving converter Courell efficiency, waffle hoods and water sprays were installed on the converters to reduce air infiltration and increase the moisture level in the gas.BackgroundThe Horne Smelter of Noranda Inc. is situated in northwestern Quebec and, since the closure o f the min e in 1976, has been operating as a custom smelter. The concentrates treated at the smelter come from various mines with mixed sulphide ores , many o f them containing significant amounts of lead and zinc which makes dust collection in electrostatic precipitators mo re difficult than normal.As part of a continuing program on reducing smelter dust emissions, the No . 6 Cottrell was installed in 1972 up stream of Nos. 2 and 4 Cottrells (in parallel) in a n attempt to improve dust collection by increasing the over- all precipitator capacity ( Fig. I). However, it has never per formed a t its designed efficiency o f 94%. The average efficiency established in various test s was in the range of 60 – 65%."

Shebandowan Mine presents a unique opportunity for the mining industry to demonstrate its willingness and ability to use electrical energy effectively. The mine is a typical 250D-ton/day operation supplied by a i5-MVA power transformer. it is a recent, up-to-date design and operates on a four-day/week, two-shift/day basis. The paper outlines an energy profile based on historical data. It accurately describes the individual and total energy input For: (1) production and non-productive junctions; (2) production and down-time periods; (3) peak and average activity levels; and (4) principal energy utilization equipment. A comparison is then made of production data to electrical data, and production and electrical data to design data. The paper concludes that energy management has an important benefit for the mining industry by assisting in maintaining a competitive operation through reduced costs and fewer production slow-downs in the event of energy shortages.

A clarification technology used by municipalities to produce high-quality drinking water, polish sewage treatment plant effluent and handle combined sewer overflows has recently found new applications in the mines and iron and steel industry. This patented process, known as ACTIFLO®, utilizes microsand in a ballasted flocculation process to enhance the settling characteristics of suspended solids, increasing the efficiency sufficiently to achieve a clarifier footprint that is smaller than the one of a conventional clarifier. ACTIFLO® rise rates vary from 40 to 170 m/h with a total system hydraulic retention time of about 10 minutes. The result is a clarification system so compact that a full-scale system can operate as a trailer-mounted unit for temporary applications or as a permanent installation in facilities with space limitations. This paper explains the process and presents case studies in which this innovative technology was used at mines and steelmaking facilities to meet compliance requirements.

"The release of vanadium, iron, nickel and titanium from the cokes produced in the upgrading of Alberta oil sands bitumen has been assessed for simple chemical leaching processes. Flexicoker coke (Exxon Engineering and Research) has been found to be quite amenable to the recovery of vanadium as well as nickel, iron and some titanium by these techniques, whereas fluid coker coke (Syncrude) and delayed coker coke (Great Canadian Oil Sands) are relatively intractable under the mild conditions employed. The factors affecting the extent of vanadium release are discussed in terms of the surface area accessible, the wettability of the material, and the chemical and physical composition of the coke particles in each case.A novel biologically assisted heap leaching procedure for f1exicoker coke is also described, based on the growth of the chemolithotrophic bacteria, Thiobacillus thiooxidans A TCC 8085, on elemental sulphur added to the coke."

"IntroductionThe development of British Columbia's northeast coal deposits, represents the single biggest industrial undertaking in British Columbia's history.As a result of this development, several thousand jobs were created, hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue and billions of dollars in new foreign exchange began flowing into Canada.The Northeast Coal Development began in 1981 with the signing of sales contracts to ship a total of 6.5 million tonnes of metallurgical and additional quantities of thermal coal annually to Japan over a 15-year period. The current long-term agreements contain provisions for extension to 20 years.The sales contracts with a group of Japanese steel mills were signed by two Vancouver-based mining companies, Quintette Coal Limited and Teck Corporation. The agreements followed years of exploration and negotiation beginning in 1968.The first shipment of coal from Quintette and Teck's Bullrnoose Mine was transported by BC Rail and Canadian National Railways to the Ridley Island coal port in the fall of 1983."

"How can the durability of asphalt pavement be doubled without increasing highway budgets? Asphalt containing asbestos can provide the desired performance with additional costs being made up by longer life. The addition of a low percentage of asbestos to an asphalt mix permits a higher asphalt content without any consequent loss in stability. It is mainly the higher asphalt content that provides improved performance and durability, although the fibrous reinforcement plays a key role in preventing the propagation of micro-fissures. The supply of vanadium is assured by diversified sources, distributed all over the globe. The inexhaustible raw materials base is complemented by a strong vanadium industry. Both the fully integrated vanadium producers and converters of vanadium oxide or vanadium-containing slags or residues guarantee an adequate supply, commensurate with the steady growing demand.The major share of the world's vanadium output is being consumed by the steel industry. As an additive to steel, the versatility of vanadium is particularly impressive. A few hundreds of one per cent of vanadium convert plain carbon steel into high-strength, low-alloy steel with more than double strength. The necessary ultrasonic parameters to achieve the essential cavitation for adequate degassing and refining of the A356 alloy as well as the optimum fluid flow characteristics for uniform dispersion of the nanoparticles into the A356 alloy matrix have been investigated in this study by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling with a magneto-hydro-dynamics (MHD) model and an UST cavitation model.The MHD model accounts for turbulent fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification, electromagnetic field as well as the complex interactions between the solidifying alloy and nanoparticles by using ANSYS Maxwell and ANSYS Fluent Dense Discrete Phase Model (DDPM) and a particle engulfment and pushing (PEP) model.INTRODUCTIONAluminum matrix nanocomposites can offer outstanding properties, including low density, high specific strength, high specific stiffness, excellent wear resistance and controllable expansion coefficient, which make them attractive for numerous applications in aerospace, automobile, and military industries field (Bozic, 2010, De Cicco, 2009, Elshalakany, 2014, Goh, 2006, Jia, 2013 and 2015, Liu, 2014, Reihani, 2006, and Su, 2010).As shown in literatures (Aki, 1999 and Mussert, 2002), it is highly advantageous to use nano-sized ceramic particles to produce metal matrix nano-composites (MMNCs) since similar ductility and higher strength with the metal matrix can be achieved. Currently, there are several fabrication methods of MMNCs, including mechanical alloying with high energy milling (Chen, 1997) , ball milling (Filho, 2003), nano-sintering (Groza, 1999), spray deposition, electrical plating, sol-gel synthesis, laser deposition, etc. The mixing of nano-sized ceramic particles is normally lengthy, expensive, and energy consuming.Ultrasonic Stirring Technology (UST) has been extensively used in purifying, degassing, and refinement of metallic melt (Jian, 2005, Khalifa, 2008, Eskin, 2002, Xu, 2004, and Meek, 2006) mainly because introducing the ultrasonic energy into a liquid will induce nonlinear effects such as cavitation and acoustic streaming. SiC nanoparticles are widely used as reinforcement particles due to their relatively good thermal and chemical stability. Ultrasonic vibration can improve the wettability between the reinforced nanoparticles and the metal matrix (Lan, 2004, Cao, 2008, and Yan, 2011), which will assist to distribute the nanoparticles more uniformly into the metal matrix. Ultrasonic cavitation in liquids causes high speed liquid jets of up to 1000 km/h. Such jets press liquid at high pressure between the particles and separate them from each other (Hielscher, 2005)."
