"HPAL and POX autoclave vapor-space gasses are vented through an autoclave PCV (Pressure Control Valve). The downstream steam-born mist of liquid droplets and solid particles travels in excess of 1000 m/s with megawatts of kinetic power at temperatures up to 160 C. The characteristics of downstream states often result in problems with corrosion, erosion, noise and vibration. Comprehension of those and related characteristics aids in improved pressure control, overpressure control and autoclave level control. We introduce compressible multiphase flow concepts and constructs germane to such flow including choked flow, continuous phase change, shock waves and supersonic flow plumes. Flow modeling based on first principles quantitatively predicts such flows providing a tool for component sizing and a method to estimate effects of water injection on flow. Insight deduced from modeling aids in mitigation of afore mentioned problems of which we share some from-site examples.INTRODUCTION First principles related to fluid thermodynamics and compressible flow have been employed akin to their application in the rocket industry. We will present the results of the application of those principles conceptually and authentically without mathematical rigour while using language of the pertinent disciplines. The autoclave (AC) vapor space over the slurry of a POX (Pressure Oxidation) or HPAL (High-Pressure Acid Leach) system (depicted in Figure 1) is vented via a PCV (pressure control valve) followed by certain ducting, and perhaps a nozzle, before exiting at atmospheric (typically) pressure. As indicated by its name the PCV controls the AC pressure as the flow control component of a pressure control loop."

"IntroductionThis chapter is intended to provide information on the operation and maintenance of several pieces of equipment used in heavy media separation. Most heavy media separation circuits, particularly those involving bath separators can be considered as high maintenance areas. Because of this the efficient operation and maintenance of these circuits is very important if the cost per ton of material treated is to be kept to an acceptable level.Heavy media separation (HMS), is a process used to separate particles of different specific gravities. Under laboratory conditions the ideal way to separate two types of particles which have different specific gravities is to suspend them in a heavy liquid which has a specific gravity between those of the two types of particles. Those particles with the lower specific gravities will float on top of the liquid while the higher specific gravity material will sink to the bottom. Given enough time and a sufficient volume of heavy liquid this process will be essentially insensitive to the sizes of the particles involved.Heavy media separation circuits make use of the same principles described above. The material to be treated is introduced into a mixture of finely ground solids, called media, and water which takes the place of the heavy liquid; the mixture of solids and water is known as medium. The separating force can be either gravity or centrifugal force. The type of solids used as media varies but it is usually a high specific gravity material such as magnetite, galena or ferrosilicon.Heavy media separation is used extensively in the cleaning of coal and to a lesser extent as a preconcentration step in base metal and iron ore operations."

"Highland Valley Copper is a large volume producer of copper and molybdenum concentrates. Production is by conventional truck and shovel operation combined with an extensive ore handling in-pit crushing and conveying system.Grade of the two orebodies is low at 0.4% copper and 0.007% molybdenum and this demands a production rate in excess of 260 000 tpd at a stripping ratio of 1: 1. Mining cost has to be kept at minimum levels to keep the mine profitable and thus, it is necessary to keep in the forefront: of technology. As well as the in-pit crushing system, the mine has pioneered the use of shovel weighing coupled with a state-of-the-art dispatch system.Maintenance of the equipment is carried out at the on-site mine maintenance shop with assistance from local shops for engine and wheel motor rebuilds and other large jobs such as those requiring stress relieving. Shovel and truck rebuilds are undertaken by mine crews. Both long- and short-term planning is designed and scheduled in the mine engineering section. Outside consultants are used to assist in slope design, reclamation and blasting technology."

Contaminated neutral drainage (CND) is characterized by the presence of metal concentrations above regulatory requirements at circumneutral pH in mine drainage. The generation of CND by tailings and waste rocks is a growing concern for the mining industry due to increasingly restrictive regulatory requirements. Difficulties in CND prediction arise from the low oxidation rates of sulfide minerals and from the metal retention potential within the wastes. In fact, sorption phenomena may induce an important delay in the development of CND. For now, it is not possible to adequately consider this delay using the prediction tools developed for acid-mine drainage, such as humidity cells, columns and lysimeters. This work aims to present the new approaches currently under study for CND prediction, particularly the use of a chelating agent in kinetic tests. The main challenge of CND prediction is to quantify the metal retention potential of mine wastes, especially when sorption phenomena are involved in metal retention. Three approaches are currently used to overcome this difficulty. Firstly, the sorption potential is estimated using batch sorption studies. The second approach consists of artificially saturating the sorption potential of the mine waste by contact with a contaminated leachate in sorption-enabling conditions until saturation of the retention potential. These approaches both require that the possible metals involved in CND are known (as well as their chemical speciation) prior to the tests, which require an exhaustive material characterization. Although the two methods enable a qualitative estimation of the retention potential of mine wastes, their results are difficult to scale up from the laboratory to the field since some important parameters are not taken into account. A third proposed approach consists of inhibiting metal sorption at the source using chelating agents. The hypothesis is that chelating the metals immediately upon their release from the oxidation of sulfide minerals will inhibit all geochemical interactions (sorption, complexation, secondary mineral precipitation, ion exchange, etc.) between the metal and its environment. The ideal chelating agent will inhibit geochemical interactions after metal release in the drainage waters without having any impact on the sulfide oxidation and acid neutralisation rates. These approaches were tested over a waste rock sample that is known to naturally generate CND after a few decades of weathering. Results show that kinetic testing (weathering cell, ± 70 g samples) using a chelating agent (EDTA) in the leaching water renders higher metal concentrations in the leachates than a control sample without EDTA, suggesting that sorption (and possibly other geochemical interactions) is inhibited. These results suggest that the combination of these approaches can be efficiently used for more precise CND prediction from mine wastes. Future work will be done using the chelating agent approach over larger scale tests such as columns (± 80 kg samples) and field cells (± 100 tons) in order to propose an integrated approach for CND prediction.

A Joint Venture between Hope Bay Gold Corporation and Miramar Mining Corporation recently acquired the Hope Bay project in Nunavut, which represents the first discovery of a major new Archean greenstone gold belt in Canada since the discovery of Hemlo in 1982 and the Yellowknife belt in 1938. Located some 685 km North of Yellowknife, the Hope Bay Belt is geologically comparable to the other major gold producing regions of Canada. The initial discovery of gold mineralization in 1992 led BHP to acquire virtually all of the Hope Bay belt. Over the subsequent 6 years, BHP expended C$85 million on exploration, including 180,000 meters of drilling, 2.3km of underground workings and a 27,000 tonne bulk sample, as well as extensive environmental and economic studies. Hope Bay Gold and Miramar acquired the Hope Bay property in December 1999 for a cost of C$27 million, considerably less than the C$85 million spent by BHP in exploring the property. They both hold 50% of the project, and share expenses equally. Hope Bay Gold is the manager of all exploration phases and Miramar will manage feasibility, construction and operations. The Hope Bay Joint Venture controls 1,117 sq. km., covering virtually the entire 80 km long Hope Bay and adjacent Elu greenstone belts. We believe that Hope Bay is one of the best-undeveloped gold projects in Canada. Work to date has defined a global resource in excess of three million ounces of gold in three principal deposits, each of which is open to extension along strike and to depth. A C$17 million work program for year 2000 focused on advancing a significant portion of the gold resource to a measured and indicated category. This will provide the basis for initiation of a feasibility study in 2001. The 2000 drill program was one of the largest undertaken in Canada last year, and is a clear indication of our confidence that Hope Bay will develop into a major gold producing district. The majority of the potential mineable areas known to date lie within 350m of surface and would be accessed through a combination of open pit and declines. Currently, development of a 1,800 to 2,000 tpd gold mine producing in excess of 300,000 ounces of gold per year at cash costs below $US200 per ounce is envisioned. In addition, the exploration potential on the 80 km gold belt at Hope Bay is clearly tremendous.

"IntroductionOne aspect of current research in the Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM) involves the automatic identification of different rock types based on particular drill performance parameter responses. In this paper, the four drill performance parameters of torque, pulldown pressure, rotary speed and penetration rate, were measured from an instrumented rotary blasthole drill during field investigations undertaken at the Fording River Mine, Elkford, British Columbia. The variations in these parameters were subsequently correlated with the corresponding rock types using the results from gamma, neutron and core logs in the same or adjacent boreholes. Work to date has sought to understand the relationships between drilling performance parameter variation and rock properties. Using the results of these studies, the present research is aimed at developing techniques whereby classical statistical pattern recognition methods are applied to drill data to permit the discrimination of different rock units. A monitoring system incorporating such a capability would greatly enhance the quality and amount of geological information on a per borehole basis while drilling. This data in tum could be used economically and directly towards explosive loading, geological exploration and reserve estimation. Background and PhilosophyThis work is an extension of equipment monitoring studies at the Fording River Mine. At this site over a two-year period, 5180 m of data was acquired on an instrumented Bucyrus-Erie 60R drill during routine production blasthole drilling. Throughout these studies, a 311mm diameter S8M Security tungsten-carbide tricone bit was used. The mine, located in southeast British Columbia, is a large-scale, open pit coal operation. The means of excavation revolves around a drill-blast-muck cycle and employs a standard shovel-truck system of transport. Four main rock types are present: sandstone, siltstone, mudstone and coal, with average compressive strengths ranging from 10 MPa to 150MPa respectively (peck 1989). However, based on the field studies, very few differences in terms of strength and compositional properties were seen between the sandstones and siltstones at the site. Therefore, they are referred to as sandstone/siltstone in all further discussions."

"In Malaysia, there were two rare earths processing plants namely Asian Rare Earth (ARE) and the Malaysian Rare Earth Corporation Plant (MAREC) in Perak, which were operated until 1992 and were subsequently closed due to problems pertaining to disposal of large amount of radioactive waste. Recently, Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) has become one of the largest rare earths processing plant in the world producing rare earth elements (REE) in Gebeng, Pahang. The primary raw material is lanthanide concentrate (LC) which is imported from Mount Weld mine in Australia and shipped to Malaysia. LC is produced from lanthanide ore after mining and mineral processing. The ore has a lower impact than Bayan Obo, Mountain Pass and adsorbed clay deposits, given the small footprint of the mine itself and the remoteness of the location. The type of ore being mined (rare earth phosphates: carbonatite, monazite) may have higher thorium content than bastnasite ore from the Chinese or American mines but still far below radiation concerns. This paper was written to review the processing flowsheet at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP), the environmental impact associated with the processing of the said ores and the sustainability of the operation.INTRODUCTIONRare earth minerals are one of a set of 17 minerals or chemical elements which consists of yttrium and scandium, as well as the 15 lanthanide elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium). Despite their importance, rare earth minerals rarely exist in economically viable concentrations and they are usually difficult to extract. Rare-earth minerals create strong magnets when added to magnetic elements such as iron, and are useful for the production of electronics systems as well as electric cars. They are also used extensively in automotive catalytic converters, fluid cracking catalysts in petroleum refining, wind turbines, phosphors in colour televisions and flat panel screens, displays for mobile phones and laptops, rechargeable batteries, and various medical devices. The elements are typically split into two subgroups: the cerium sub-group of ‘‘Light’’ rare earth elements (LREEs) which includes La to Eu and the yttrium sub-group of ‘‘Heavy’’ rare earth elements (HREEs) which include the remaining lanthanide elements, Gd to Lu, including yttrium (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al., 2013; Trifonov, 1963). Scandium, however, when it is classified as a rare earth element, is not included in either the LREE or HREE classifications (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al, 2013). Half of the world’s 110 million tons of reserves exist in China while other sizable deposits are found in Russia, United States, Brazil, India, Australia, Canada, and Greenland. The countries known to be actively mining REE are China, Russia, India, Brazil and Malaysia (Hao et al., 2015). Among these countries, China has the largest REE production, accounting for more than 93% of global supply (Yap, 2015). The critical metal report (Moss et al. 2011) listed 14 economically vital raw materials that are prone to supply disruption and concluded that supply disruption would threaten the goal for cleaner transport and sustainable energy since rare earth metals are used in products using green technology, such as hybrid/electric vehicles, carbon capture systems, wind power generation, low-energy lighting, and energy efficient flat-screen displays."

"Onakawana Development Ltd. and Mana/ta Coal Ltd. have completed feasibility studies on a large lignite deposit located in the James Bay lowlands of northeastern Ontario. The mining plan described in this paper would supply coal for approximately a 33-year period with peak production in the early years of approximately 6.5 million tonnes per year then declining to 1.2 million tonnes in year 33. This paper describes the geology, resources, lignite quality, mine planning and related topics. LocationThe Onakawana lignite deposit is located in northeastern Ontario in the James Bay lowlands (Fig. l). The Ontario Northland Railway crosses the property and links it to Moosonee, JOO km further north, and Cochrane 180 km south. The area is crossed by latitude 50° 37', the approximate latitude of Calgary. Toronto lies 800 km south of the study area. History of Development The deposit has been known since the late 1600s when early English settlers extracted limited amounts of lignite for use at Moose Factory. The deposit has undergone sporadic periods of exploration activity in the late 1920s and early 1930s when the Ontario government drilled 116 holes, sunk two exploration shafts and published several technical and economic studies. Interest in the property was reactivated from 1939 to 1945 when the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway Ltd. drilled 182 additional closely spaced holes, excavated a test pit adjacent to the rail line and installed a boiler for testing purposes. In 1965, Alberta Coal Ltd., the predecessor of Manalta Coal Ltd., first became involved. Since then a further 182 holes have been drilled and coied, and the existing test pit reopened for sampling. In 1980, various reassessment studies were launched, including geology, mine engineering, conceptual design and environmental assessment studies. The Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation requires enormous quantities of bricks each year for its Sydney steel plant operations. Clay brick of all types are purchased, while silica brick is made in the Company's plant at Sydney. A description of this plant was given in a paper presented by H. B. Gillis and F. C. Morrison at the 1938 Annual General Meeting of the Institute. The rock used to make silica brick was for years obtained from a quarry at Leitches Creek, about eighteen miles from Sydney. Due to the gradual deterioration of this deposit, the Corporation was forced to look for other sources of supply. In 1945, the problem was presented to the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and, through the efforts of Dr. A. E. Cameron and Mr. J. P. Messervey, an examination was made of a silica-rock deposit some six miles northwest of Yarmouth, N.S. Preliminary samples proved satisfactory, and arrangements were made with the Department of Mines to ship to the steel plant at Sydney a fifty-ton car load for the purpose of further testing. Brick made from this sample shipment stood up very well in the furnaces. At the same time, two hundred and fifty tons of silica rock from a deposit at Lac Bouchette, Que., were purchased from the Industrial Silica Corporation, and brick made from this rock also was found suitable for our requirements. Comparative transportation costs, however, led to a decision to open the Yarmouth deposit. The silica rock, or quartzite, of this deposit outcrops at Chegoggin point along what is known as the 'Pembroke shore', a northerly trending section of the coast-line at the extreme southwest of the Province, in Yarmouth county. The country here is fairly flat, with elevation averaging about twenty feet above high tide, and is for the most part mantled by a growth of brush and some scrub trees, chiefly small fir. Bed-rock is generally concealed beneath three to four feet of clayey soil, but scattered outcrops of the quartzite indicated that a band of this rock, some 260 feet wide, extended inland in a northeasterly direction from Chegoggin point at least to Utleys lake, a distance of about three miles.

THE gold deposits of the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, in the Bridge River district of British Columbia, are closely associated with a long, narrow intrusive body of extremely variable composition, outcropping on the northeast side of Cadwallader creek and lying almost entirely within the property boundaries of the two companies. Other masses of the same type of intrusive rock are found in the district, more or less along the line of the main axis of the Pioneer-Bralorne in trusive, and have associated with them variable amounts of gold-quartz mineralization (Figure 1). The ore deposits of the district have been the subject of investigation by officers of the Geological Survey of Canada at various times during the past 25 years, and articles on the geology and mines of the district have been published by various individuals in technical journals. "Dust samplers are based on different principles. The konimeter is based on the number of particles counted; mining applications are based on routine sampling; and the photometrical evaluation of samples is used after the pre-separation of particles above 5 micron by the mining konimeter. In special cases, the Draeger sampler is used for quantitative analysis. General trends are toward larger samples, concentration on a weight basis, fractionation into size groups by different techniques and an analysis of composition. Standards or TLVs already exist in all industries. Surface industries base their criteria on concentrations and quartz contents in particles below 5 micron. The mining industry uses the tyndalloscope routinely to determine concentrations; concurrent] y, the rock content, as deter-mined by ashing samples, is obtained by konimeter.Threshold limits are related to the rock content in respirable fractions and tyndallometrically determined concentrations. The TL Vs are based empirically on Landwehr's ""dust values,"" as agreed upon with the Mines Inspectorates. Recently, and in accurate sampling, dust samplers have been used that count the dust in two fractions -above and below 5 microns. Mineral composition is determined either for all minerais or just for quartz. In assessing the dust hazard by Landwehr's ""dust values,"" all minerais are taken into consideration; in coal dust sampling, however, only the quartz content is taken into account. Efforts are now being made to co-ordinate the different assessment methods, arriving at uniform MAC values in agreement with those of other countries."

"Soil-gas Rn was measured by two types of alpha-particle-track detectors, by emanometry and by counting alpha-activity on Rn-decay-product collectors. Soil samples were analyzed for V by fluorimetric and fission-track methods, their Rn-emanation by decay-product collectors and their total alpha activities with track detectors. The same uranium anomalies were revealed by each method. Fission-track analysis of leaves for V showed only random variations with sampling site, and the Rn emanation of trees and leaves removed from them was barely detectable . The agreement among the other methods is significant, total alpha and collector methods are simple, rapid and useful, and a combination of methods at a site would reveal disequilibrium in the U-decay series if present. Track-Rn measurements are highly reproducible and insensitive to apparatus design and their sensitivity is not enhanced by covering the detectors with thin foil or placing them in large containers.IntroductionIn the past two years , a number of methods of geochemical exploration for uranium have been tested by the authors over the known copper-uranium occurrence at South March, Ontario. This was done partly to compare methods and partly to develop and test new ones. The South march deposit has been described a number of times by others(1,2,3,4). The methods included in this study were the following.Emanometry, Radon in soil gas is measured by pumping the gas into the cell of a scintillation counter or emanometer(5,6). Alpha particles from radon (222Rn) and its decay products (218Po and 214Po) produce scintillations of light in the silver-activated zinc sunphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. These are counted by a photomultiplier tube and scaler, the count ra sulphide (ZnS(Ag) covering the walls of the cell. "Accurate, easy to obtain, and reliable methods of measurement are the cornerstone of shaft and tunnel developments - during their sinking, operation and maintenance, or in some cases, remediation. This paper presents a new methodology to capture existing shaft conditions in such a manner that they can be transferred from the field to a digital copy, where they can be stored and used for engineering design purposes in a space not directly affected by the costs associated with schedule and equipment performance. The methodology utilizes basic principles of excavation alignment (plumb lines and survey instruments) while adding modern LiDAR, geolocation and survey control tools that can more completely capture the surrounding environment. The complete cycle of collection, processing, and delivery of pertinent information underground can take under an hour. During sinking, capturing data as a live stream measurement and being able to assess the alignment of the shaft liner can be critical to meeting rigid design tolerances. As sinking progresses, small changes in alignment or liner deviations can be captured and immediately corrected. Likewise, post-construction as-built conditions can be recorded and digitized, which will allow the mine personnel to compare the proper working condition to the actual condition years later. Observed changes can be identified and planned as future shaft repair works. This methodology has been developed and successfully deployed during the on-going sinking works of the two shafts at the Jansen Potash Project in south-central Saskatchewan and is described in greater detail in this paper.INTRODUCTION Light Detection and Ranging (or LiDAR) scans of the BHP Jansen Production and Service shafts during construction identified sections of both shafts where the internal radius of the temporary primary liner was insufficient to accommodate the tolerances of the permanent liner that was to be installed inside the temporary liner. These locations are referred to as “tights”. The “Tights Removal Program” was designed to collect high resolution point clouds of the shaft, using stringent survey control, that could be compared to the design profile to generate a heat map of locations for removal of up to 75 mm of steel-fiber-reinforced, 70 MPa concrete liner. This work was all on critical path, which made it valuable to save time on the schedule. Because concrete removal was a time-intensive task, it was essential to locate and remove only the concrete that would encroach on the planned permanent liner, while attempting to maximize the amount of cutting time. Removal was carried by a road header attached to a Brokk(R) 160, a small multi-attachment demolition machine."

"Two structures, a fracture zone and a shear zone, contained the two orebodies that yielded all the ore mined at the Gold Eagle mine. The orebodies are known as the Gold Eagle vein and the No. 1 shear zone. Both structures occur close to contacts between Timiskaming sediments, Algoman diorite, and later Algoman granite-granodiorite. The structures were produced by compressive forces from a south direction acting in the southern part of the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock and in a cylindrically shaped inclusion of Timiskaming sediments.The mine, which exhausted its ore reserves and ceased operations in September of 1941, is on the east side of Mackenzie island, in the centre of Dome township in the Red Lake area.The Gold Eagle vein was located during the summer of 1933 by a surface exploration programme carried out under the direction of Alex Gillies. Sub-· sequent diamond drilling and underground exploration led to the installation of a mill, which came into production in October of 1937. The No. 1 shear zone was discovered and explored later from a drive on the 500-foot level. The mine produced a total of 40,204 oz. gold and 19,157 oz. silver from 223,628 tons of ore hoisted (180,095 tons milled) during its 4 years of mill operation.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe ore-bearing structures trend S.61°E. across Timiskaming greywacke, Algoman diorite, and later Algoman granite-granodiorite. The greywacke is a large, cylindrically shaped mass that is separated from the mai~ mass by the later intrusives. It is a massive, light-coloured, quartzose variety that has been recrystallized by the enclosing granite. The diorite and the granite-granodiorite are early and late components of the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock. The diorite, which is a porphyritic rock containing large crystals of andesine-labradorite surrounded by hornblende, was injected early in the Algoman period. It was intruded and in large measure surrounded by the later granite-granodiorite. This rock varies from a granodiorite near the mine to a granite in the centre of the stock. All three intrusions are massive and homogeneous."

Aluminum alloys are increasingly used for automotive body construction but are susceptible to filiform corrosion or paint blistering in service. Filiform corrosion resistance of two 6000-series aluminum alloys was investigated in this work. Test panels were produced with full automotive coating layers and scribed parallel and perpendicular to the rolling direction. The corrosion exposure comprised an inoculation step with acidified salt solution followed by a 6-week exposure period at 95% relative humidity and either 25°C or 70°C. Greatest corrosion activity was measured on the alloy with higher copper content, AA6111. Higher temperature exposure led to greatly enhanced corrosion activity for AA6111 compared to the lower temperature exposure. The 70°C exposure also led to greater mean corrosion-affected area measurements for the low copper aluminum alloy, AA6022, but the effect was not as stark as that observed for AA6111. Rolling direction affected the propagation direction, and possibly mechanism, of the corrosion effects. Cross-sectional analysis revealed dense corrosion products within the filament, comprising mostly aluminum and oxygen but with traces of chloride and sulphate. Development of varying filament and blister types on a single test panel and the progression of corrosion underneath a filament into the substrate indicate that several corrosion mechanisms can develop on the test panel, testament to the complexity of the corroding surface developed on an aluminum automotive body panel.

"The mineralogical studies done on Hope Brook ore samples indicated that a heap leach gold recovery process may be possible. In the metallurgicalprogram that followed, column tests confirmed this interpretation. A 9300 tonne demonstration heap leach test, in the late fall of 1985, reaffirmed laboratory results while identifying operating conditions that will have to be addressed in a production heap leach plan. Operating plans, gold recoveries and cost areas will be presented.Another important factor in a successful operation is the environment approach.LocationThe Hope Brook gold deposit is located 5 km inland from Cinq Cerf Bay on the south coast of Newfoundland. Port au x Basques is 80 km west and Burgeo 40 km to the east of Hope Brook. As there are no roads in the area, access to the site is by sea or air (Fig. I). The Hope Brook orebody is near the saddle of three watersheds flowing to Cinq Cerf Brook, Boat Hole Brook and Betty's Pond. Acceptable solutions to several environmental concerns can be obtained by using the relative sensitivities of these watersheds.The terrain at the site is generally rolling to hummocky with numerous small ponds separated with rock outcrops and patches of peat covering. Tree vegetation is sparse except in the sheltered areas around Couteau Bay and Cinq Cerf Brook. GeologyThe Chetwynd deposit is hosted by the Lower to Middle Ordovician Georges Brook Formation of the La Poile Group, a thick sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks.The Hope Brook Zone contains the largest concentration of gold found to date at Chetwynd. The zone occurs as an intensely silicified lens 100 m to 550 m long (average 400 m) by up to 60 m in width and forms the eastern portion of a more extensive, 4 km long , alteration zone trending at 053 degrees Az and dipping 70 degrees southeast.The Hope Brook Zone contains massive finely granular quartz, scattered blue quartz eyes, 3070 to 8% pyrite, minor calcopyrite and trace molybdenite. Barren silicification envelopes the gold mineralization. The zone is flanked to the southeast by a 200 metre thick aluminosilicate alteration zone and to the northwest by a 10 metre barren pyritic siliceous fragmental rock . The original lithology may be either a thick felsic pyroclastic sequence or a quartz porphyry sill that has been altered by hydrothermal processes. Silica flooding of the permeable host was accompanied by gold deposition."

"The Cyprus Anvil Mining Corporation established a lead-zinc mine and concentrating plant at Faro in Yukon Territory in 1969. Following some 12 years of continuous operation from a single pit adjacent to the concentrator, the company decided to expand operations into two additional areas on the Vangorda Plateau. The two new deposits, known as Grum and Vangorda, are located some 15 kilometres from the existing concentrator.Confirmation of mining feasibility was followed by determination of the most practical and economical method of transporting the raw ore from the new mine sites to the existing concentrator. This analysis was carried out in two phases. The first phase reviewed the feasibility of alternative transportation systems on an 'order-of-magnitude' cost basis. This work identified systems worthy of more detailed examination. The second phase examined the preferred alternatives in greater detail.Initially, operating principles and parameters were established and catalogued. Then, based on these criteria, complete systems were developed utilizing alternative modes of transportation . In the overview analysis, some transportation modes were judged impractical and discarded, 'order-o f-magnitude' costs were developed for other systems and the most costly were eliminated . In the detailed study, the favourable systems were examined in depth which required development of accurate capital and operating costs, consideration of environ- mental impacts and an assessment of intangibles associated with the operation of a new development."

Supplying ventilation in underground metal mines can be one of the most energy demanding services required to support production activities. Consequently, as energy, in the form of electricity or combustible fuels can be expensive and their unit cost is expected to increase, there is significant interest in reducing the overall demands of a mine?s ventilation system through such initiatives as controlling ventilation based upon demand and exploring other power alternatives to the current usage of the diesel engine in mobile mine vehicles. However, determining the benefit of any energy saving technology is complex and not universal applicable across the industry, consequently they have not been widely adopted. For these technologies to succeed they must be strategically applied based upon sound business cases. The intent of this paper is to provide information on some of the prospective control strategies and their potential impact on the power consumption related to supplying ventilation.

Operational monitoring of slope stability can be achieved by space based InSAR monitoring platforms. Natural and man-made rock slopes are monitored using a novel stack-based InSAR method that exploits both persistent point scatterers (PS) as well as coherent distributed scatterers (DS) such as areas of pavement and sparsely vegetated surfaces. The new method, Homogenous Distributed Scatterer (HDS)-InSAR identifies InSAR targets by using adaptive multilooking of statistically homogenous pixel neighbourhoods combined with thresholding the differential temporal coherence of each target candidate with respect to its surroundings. HDS-InSAR preserves PS and therefore forms a direct generalization to our proven DualScale-PSI method. The density of HDS exceeds that of PS by more than an order of magnitude often providing essentially continuous coverage over urban and industrial landscapes featuring a mix of infrastructure with mostly bare soils or rock surfaces. The improved coverage enables better definition of surface motion and underlying geology, which will lead to superior interpretation of the geophysical mechanisms causing the surface deformation, e.g. through improved integration with 3D deformation modeling. We illustrate the performance of our new HDS-InSAR method compared to DualScale-PSI using displacement results from Vancouver, Canada; Bingham mine, USA; and the Palabora mine, South Africa.
