DIAMOND drills have played an important part in the development of mines for many years. Recently. they have also entered the production field arid the use of diamond drills m the primary breaking of ores has become a big branch of the industry. The writer has estimated roughly that the total diamond drilling in Canada during 1942 was 5,625,000 feet, of which 2,250,000 feet, or 40 per cent, was for blast-holes. This accounts for 6,750,000 tons of ore broken, using the conservative factor of 3 tons per foot of hole. Many consider that the use of diamond drills for blast-holes is the most important advance in mine practice of the past decade, and the industry owes a great deal to the staff of Noranda Mines, Limited, for the pioneering they have done in the development of long-hole mining methods and for publishing their results. A great many mines have followed Noranda's lead. At the Waite-Amulet, Aldermac, Flin Flon, Canadian Malartic, Hoyle, and Matachewan Consolidated mines, most of the ore is broken by long-hole blasting. While the mines were developing new methods, the diamond-drill industry was developing mechanically-set bits and better machines. Through the effective use o smaller, cheaper diamonds, as well as more efficient setting, bit costs per foot are only one-half what they were ten years ago. Few people realize that a diamond bit is relatively inexpensive. The common EXT coring bit, for example, contains some 200 small diamonds, weighing altogether about 2.70 carats which, at $3.40 per carat, cost $9.20. After use, the equivalent of about 100 of these diamonds may be recovered. Therefore the true cost of the bit is only $7.00, made up of $4.60, the cost of the diamonds lost, $2.00 for setting, and $0.40 tax. The trend in machines has been toward specialization for the different classes of rock in blast-hole work. Light, high-speed machines have been developed for soft ores and higher powered machines for hard ores.

"Background The preponderance of Canada's coal resources is located in areas remote from high demand domestic users and at some significant distances from deepsea ports. This places great demands on the transportation system and has forced the coal and the transportation industries to adopt highly efficient methods of handling the product and hauling it to market position. Most of the coal not consumed in minemouth thermal power stations is carried by rail over lines operated by the two transcontinental railway systems, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. These rail networks are extensive and have the advantage (as compared to most other North American railways) of being able to handle coal movements from origin through to destination without interchange to other rail carriers. Coal SourcesWith exception of the coal produced in Cape Breton, Nova iScotia, all the significant shipping volumes in Canada emanate ifrom mines located in the three most westerly provinces. Figure I ishows the geographic distribution of the major mining operaitions shipping coal to domestic and export markets. The prinicipal routes and the tonnages carried (1980 calendar year) are ialso indicated. iThe 1980 shipping data are summarized in Table I. Saskatchewan lignite began moving from Bienfait to Thunder Bay by CP Rail unit trains in mid-1981 at the rate of one million tonnes per year. The product is handled through Thunder Bay Terminals and delivered directly to a nearby Ontario Hydro electrical generating station."

The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. This paper presents a general re-view of the various methods of briquetting coals, with and without the aid of a binder, with special reference to the production of a suitable briquette from Nova Scotia 'fines' for re-blending with industrial coal. From the economic and technical viewpoints, either small stoker-sized briquettes made with about 4 per cent asphalt in standard low-pressure double-roll presses, or briquettes made without binder in high-pressure double-roll presses, appear to be the most reasonable solution at present.

THE Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, as a coal mining concern and as a steel industry, has much pumping to do, and the conditions are as varied as it is possible to make them. We are faced with handling large quantities of water at low heads, and small quantities of water at high heads. We have fresh water, we have salt water, and we have highly acidulous water (see Table II). Our pumping problems are concerned chiefly with mechanical reliability, continuous, reliable operation, first cost, and operating cost. The Corporation is actually expending more than 15 per cent of its power consumption at the mines in pumping water, and at the steel plant about 17 per cent; that is to say, 16 per cent of the Corporation's entire power consumption goes into pumping water ( see Table I). We are pumping out of the mines 2 ½ tons of water for every tan of coal that is produced. At the Steel Plant, we are pumping 188 tans of water for every ton of steel we produce. (See Tables III and IV). The mine is pumping at high heads, up to as high as 1,400 feet in one lift ; in the Steel Plant it is, fortunately, at lower heads, 250 feet or 110 lb. being the general maximum. It behooves us, therefore, to look into the question of efficiency. In whatever direction we can gain something, it will be worth while. The centrifugal pump is not an adaptable machine. That is, a pump designed for some particular location and purpose will not always work efficiently if installed in some other place and used for some other purpose. It must generally be designed for the particular job it has to do. Reciprocating pumps are not so sensitive. We have Cameron plunger pumps that can be set up almost anywhere in a mine and they will work, but for big jobs they are apt to be clumsy and the driving power becomes a factor- which is, in fact, the controlling factor in deciding the type of pump we use. One disadvantage of the a.c. induction motor, however, is that its speed cannot easily be controlled. At its rated speed and output, it is a highly efficient machine, but, with any change in these, its efficiency goes all to pieces.

"THE TOWN OF Salmo, rail centre for the Salmo lead-zinc mining district, is in southeastern British Columbia 26 miles by road east of Trail an about the same distance south of Nelson. The belt in which the mines occur is a few miles east of Salmo and extends about 6 miles north of the town and 17 miles south and southwest to the International Boundary. The belt includes the H. B. mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, the Jersey mine of Canadian Exploration Limited, the Reeves MacDonald mine, and the Jack Pot property of New Jersey Zinc Explorations Limited.Since 1949, the Jersey and Reeves MacDonald mines have produced most of the lead and zinc in the district. From 1949 through 1954 these two mines together produced a total of 233,134 ounces of silver, 87,659,399 pounds of lead, 215,708,856 pounds of zinc and 475,397 pounds of cadmium. This amounts to more than 80 per cent of the total production of lead and 95 per cent of the total production of zinc from the district since the first recorded production in 1906. Reserves at the largest properties amount to several million tons of ore containing 4 to 7 per cent combined lead and zinc. Several prospects are potential producers.Regional StructureThe main structural units in the Salmo area are outlined in Figure I, and the major rock units of the stratigraphic column are listed in the following table. The lead and zinc deposits are replacements in a highly deformed limestone formation near the base of the Laib group, and all mineralized zones are on the south and east side of structural unit 2 (see Figure I)."

Until recently, the approach to the problem of treating complex ores bas been to produce, insofar as is possible, mono-metal concentrates which are treated in traditional zinc, lead and copper smelting circuits, with the residues and by-products from some of these circuits being retreated for the recovery of contained values either by a separate residue treatment process or along with the primary feed to the appropriate circuit. The continued development of the Imperial Smelting Process, with its ability to treat poly-metal concentrates, calls for a re-examination of the traditional approach to this problem, and this the paper attempts to do. A survey of recent progress in the technical development of the process is made and a summary of current operational performance is included.

"As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick Gold’s autoclaves / CIL facility at Goldstrike, blanking the preg robbing native carbon in the process solids with hard (m.p. 55 - 60 º C) paraffin wax was studied, specifically in relation to pressure oxidation. The improvement in CIL gold extraction was found to depend on the wax addition point, with hot, dry contacting of the ore in the presence of wax - prior to POX - yielding the largest, most consistent improvement in gold extraction.INTRODUCTIONDouble refractory gold ores present two barriers to gold extraction. The first is generally a physical barrier: the gold is encapsulated or dispersed in a matrix which is impervious to the gold lixiviant. In most cases, including Carlin Trend, NV, deposits, this involves a pyrite or arsenopyrite matrix, although minor gold may also be dispersed in competent silica (quartz) or iron oxides. Gold can be rendered accessible by oxidative destruction of such sulphide matrices. At Goldstrike this is practised by roasting and autoclave oxidation (Thomas, 1994). It is the latter route to which this paper refers.The second barrier refers to the actual gold recovery. Gold may be extracted from the pressure oxidized solids with cyanide, forming a gold cyanide complex. One characteristic of this complex is that it adsorbs on graphitic surfaces. This is taken advantage of on a large scale by gold millers, who use manmade activated, i.e., graphitized carbon particles to remove the gold from solution during leaching: the Carbon-In-Leach, or CIL process. The gold cyanide bearing carbon particles are larger than the ore solids and can be separately recovered by screening. Goldstrike uses the CIL technology to recover gold. The second barrier becomes problematic when the ore naturally contains graphitic orcarbonaceous material, hereafter referred to as native carbon (versus the man-made activated carbon). This material may also adsorb gold cyanide in competition with the activated carbon. Since the native carbon is ground with the ore it is much smaller than the activated carbon. Any competition between the two carbons may produce a loss of gold from the pregnant leach liquor to the process tailings. This phenomenon is called “preg robbing”. Goldstrike ores come from the Carlin trend, which is known for the occurrence of native carbon (Adams & Burger, 1998; Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001; Tretbar, 2004)."

The Teniente Converter (wet charge type) was commissioned in august 1995 and was designed to smelt 744 tpd (metric tons per day) of dry copper concentrates. Its products are white metal (73% Cu) that is sent to the Peirce Smith converters, slag that is cleaned in Reverberatory Furnaces and the process gases that are sent to the Sulfuric Acid Plant. Since its start up, the Teniente Converter smelting capacity was increased 1.6 times, from 800 tpd to 1,280 tpd using 33% oxygen-enriched air, and reaching an operative availability of 97%. By the other hand its campaigns have reached a record duration of 530 days without hot patching tuyeres and a partial refractory lining repair in the last four campaigns. This paper describes the most relevant improvements, as well as the strategies that had been used to reach these achievements.

"11.1. INTRODUCTIONA royalty is the most common form of interest retained by an owner who is disposing of his property or by a joint venturer who ceases, voluntarily or otherwise, to participate in the joint venture.1 Rarely does a non-participating party have a direct interest in the property and/or assets of a project, except during the period when a non-participating joint venturer may be having his interest diluted.2 In fact, it is most unwise to permit a non-participating party to have such an interest. It may give rise to significant problems that could prevent or substantially delay the development of an orebody and require a considerable amount of time, effort, and money to correct.3In negotiating a royalty, it is important to be aware that there is no law or convention that says, “You just don’t do that in a royalty agreement.” As with any agreement, inventiveness and flexibility on the part of the negotiator are not just assets, but virtual necessities. It is also for this reason that it is essential to read the royalty provisions, particularly the definitions, fully and carefully, especially if you are the recipient. On the other hand, if your inventiveness and flexibility cause your accountant to question the advisability of one of your ideas, pay close attention to him.4 He will, no doubt, have had experience with many royalties, and no competent professional adviser disparages a client’s ideas without good reason. Besides, he will probably be the person who will be determining the royalty or certifying the determination of it. At the very least, he will be auditing your general financial statements, which must, of course, reflect the royalty determination. Heeding his advice not only may make the determination easier but also will probably save you money in professional fees later on. Nevertheless, do not simply accept his comments or recommendations without understanding what they mean, why they have been made with respect to your royalty agreement (sometimes professionals have comments that they make as a matter of course and, even though they may be valid, you should require them to be justified to you), and how they will affect your royalty determination.It is surprising how many corporate payors insist that their standard royalty provisions5 be used as a matter of policy, thereby effectively tying the negotiator’s hands. It is even more surprising, and to professional advisers frightening, how many of the senior employees who insist that such a policy be adhered to, virtually without variation, do not know what is in the standard provisions and would be hard-pressed to explain them to a property owner. If standard provisions are appropriate, by all means use them, but do allow experienced and sensible negotiators some flexibility and make sure that everyone within the corporation who may have to use such provisions – negotiator and supervisor alike – knows what they contain and why they are as they are. For example, there are often good and convincing reasons to describe a deduction in a certain way or to include a certain specific type of deduction. On the other hand, quite often the answer to the question “why?” is that “it has always been there”; this is, or should be, an unacceptable answer. In any event, if you, as the negotiator, appear to know what you are talking about, are familiar and comfortable with your royalty provisions, and are backed up by your boss with the same words or reasoning, a property owner cannot help but be satisfied that you are knowledgeable, even if he still does not agree with your provisions. Finally, if you do use standard provisions, make sure that they are reviewed and updated regularly."

INTRODUCTION A DISTILLATION process offers one of the most effective methods of refining metals. Its use is particularly attractive in the case of reactive metals which are not readily treated by pyrometallurgical or electrolytic methods. The 1ow vapour pressure of most metals severely restricts the applicability of the disti1lation process and only one or two metals may be effectively treated under atmospheric pressure at a reasonable temperature. If operations are carried out under reduced pressure several additional metals may be effectively distilled. Table I shows the vapour pressure of a number of metals together with a value of the free energy of formation of their ?oxides. Zinc and cadmium head the list and for many years? they have .been effectively refined by distillation. Sodium, magnesium, and calcium follow in descending order, and they may be distilled readily in vacuo and with difficulty at atmospheric pressure. Sodium, which is not of great metallurgical interest, is not considered. Magnesium has recently been produced in considerable tonnages by distillation methods ( 3). This paper describes the vacuum distillation of magnesium and calcium, their separation from each other, and their separation from less volatile impurities.

A lined rock cavern (LRC) is an alternative container for compressed air energy storage (CAES) to store high-pressure air that is later used to produce electricity. A critical requirement of CAES in LRCs is that the inner seal should provide adequate sealing capacity to prevent air leakage from LRCs. In many studies, rubber sheets are applied to build the inner seal. However, air leakage through rubber seals has not been given much attention and rubber seals are usually assumed to be absolutely airtight. Given that rubber is permeable especially under high air pressure, such as in CAES, air therefore leaks through rubber seals during CAES operations. In this study, a numerical analysis was conducted based on the permeation equation of polymers and the governing equations of thermodynamics of CAES caverns to analyze the characteristics of air leakage from CAES caverns through rubber seals. A planned CAES plant in China was considered as a case study. Results show that air leakage rate increases with increasing cavern temperature and pressure during air injection and decreases as cavern temperature and pressure decline during air withdrawal. However, in total, the daily air leakage percentage is in the order of magnitude of 10-3% in a typical operation cycle, which is much smaller than the critical value of 1%. Under a common range of realistic operations conditions, the daily air leakage percentage is still of the order of 10-3%. Therefore, rubber seals can be used to prevent air leakage in LRCs for CAES. However, the experience of Japanese pilot cavern indicates that the specifications for the on-site vulcanization jointing and installation methods of rubber seals still need improvement.

Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. "A set of experimental batch leaching tests studied the effect of pH, time, temperature, and stirring speed on the relative Cu, Co, Ni, and Fe leaching yields of an oxidized copper-cobalt ore sample in an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution. The results were statistically analyzed and modelled using the structural equation modelling method. Models showed that Cu, Co, and Ni leaching yields were strong functions of the leaching time and leaching temperature, whereas the Fe leaching yield depended on the leaching temperature, stirring speed, and pH. Under optimum leaching conditions yields were 99.8% Cu, 82.4% Co, 91.3% Ni, and 30.6% Fe.RÉSUMÉ Une série d’essais expérimentaux de lixiviation en bâchée ont été menés pour étudier l’effet du pH, de la durée d’attaque, de la température et de la vitesse de brassage sur les rendements relatifs de lixiviation du cuivre (Cu), du cobalt (Co), du nickel (Ni) et du fer (Fe) d’un échantillon de minerai de cuivre-cobalt oxydé dans une solution aqueuse d’acide chlorhydrique. Les résultats ont été analysés et modélisés statistiquement à l’aide de la méthode de modélisation par équation structurelle (SEM, de l’anglais structural equation modelling). Les modèles ont montré que les rendements de lixiviation du Cu, du Co et du Ni dépendaient énormément de la durée d’attaque et de la température de la lixiviation ; le rendement de lixiviation du Fe, quant à lui, dépendait de la température de la lixiviation, de la vitesse de brassage et du pH. INTRODUCTIONThe Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of Congo hosts the northwestern part of the Central African Copperbelt. This region abounds with large, rich deposits of sulfide and oxidized copper-cobalt ores. In general, the main valuable minerals present are malachite (CuCO3Cu(OH)2) and heterogenite (CoO(OH)). Common impurities found in heterogenite are Cu, Ni, Si, Al, Mn, and Fe. The substitution of Co by other cations (e.g., Cu, Ni, and Fe) has an influence on the crystallinity of heterogenite (Deliens, 1974). In general, well-crystallized varieties of heterogenite have lower impurity contents, whereas amorphous heterogenite types usually contain more impurities (Thys et al., 2009). Further, in heterogenite, Co can occur in the 2+ and 3+ oxidation states. The gangue generally consists of quartz (SiO2), talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2), kaolinite (SiO2·Al2O3·2H2O), limonite (Fe2O3·3H2O), and goethite (FeO(OH)). Oxidized copper-cobalt ores are often treated by hydrometallurgical methods, whereas sulfide ores are often treated by flotation or pyrometallurgy, depending on their grades. Hydrometallurgical methods typically entail selectively dissolving the metals of interest (Cu, Co, and Ni) in aqueous solutions (leaching), transferring the dissolved metals to an organic solution, and retransferring these to a second aqueous solution (solvent extraction). Copper and nickel are readily dissolved in an acidic aqueous media. In contrast, cobalt is difficult to dissolve, especially if it is present in the third oxidation state; however, this species becomes soluble after it is reduced to Co2+ (Mwema, Mpoyo, & Kafumbila, 2002; Kime & Makgoale, 2016)."

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the average global temperature has risen over the last century. If this trend continues over the next century, the IPCC projects a significant increase in temperature and a rise in sea level. The changes in climate could adversely impact human health, agriculture, water resources and ecosystems. Most national and international agencies have concluded that our use of carbon-rich fuel is responsible for global warming through the greenhouse effect. In the future, the situation may get worse if the increased need for energy in countries like China, India and Brazil is fulfilled by burning fossil fuel. Advanced natural gas-fuelled vehicles have the potential to reduce carbon monoxide and reactive hydrocarbon emissions substantially compared to gasoline vehicles. Further environmental benefits can be realized by using a blend of natural gas and hydrogen. Such an approach will help create an infrastructure for an eventual transition to hydrogen.

Introduction That the coal industry has entered a new phase in its development is now evident. Coal, besides being the chief source of heat and power, has become a potential raw material for many industries. Rapid progress has been made in the methods used in the mining and preparation of coal, and in the equipment for the burning of coal. Data of a fundamental nature relating to the composition of coal and to its transformations? during combustion and processing have also been revealed. Research, the key which has opened this new era, has already accomplished much, but it has only begun to show what it may and should be able to do. New developments of coal burning equipment, super-power plants, carbonizing and briquetting plants, hydrogenation and synthetic chemical processes, will undoubtedly have a marked influence in the post-war years on the economic welfare of many coal producing countries. Until comparatively recently, however, there has been in many branches of the coal industry a tendency to regard research as something abstruse and something which had little or no value to those managing such branches. But the fact that coal has suffered as a source of heat and energy through inroads of oil, natural gas, and water power, has made it plain to the industry that, if it is to maintain its present markets in this competitive world, much less increase them, the whole industry must be willing to follow the example of other industries and plan for the future.

Introduction In this paper it is proposed to review the history of petroleum geology in western Canada, to discuss some of the main events which have affected its progress, to mention its relationship to the petroleum industry, and, finally, to appraise its present status and possible future importance. It will be useful first to consider the meanings of the terms petroleum geology, petroleum geologist, and the petroleum geology of a terrain. Petroleum Geology. - In simplest terms, geology is the science of the earth. Hence petroleum geology is the science of that portion of the earth that encloses pools of petroleum. The systematic delineation and study of stratigraphic geology began about 1820. The systematic development and study of petroleum geology started about 1910. It is a relatively immature branch of geology. Petroleum Geologist. - This term may be applied to a fully qualified geologist who is engaged for a time, be it a job, a contract, or a lifetime, in the work of finding and developing deposits of petroleum and related substances. No man may properly be called a petroleum geologist who is not first a fully qualified geologist.

"The beneficiation and upgrading of pyrochlore from its ores is carried out through flotation. In industrial practice, upgrading is conducted in a two-stage flotation process in which pyrochlore flotation is carried out after gangue mineral pre-flotation (carbonate, silicate, sulphide or phosphate reverse flotation). In this study, the flotation of pyrochlore from a low grade carbonatite ore was performed at the laboratory scale following a two-stage flotation process in which carbonate minerals were floated in advance of niobium minerals. In parallel, a simplified flotation process was developed in which pyrochlore was floated directly from gangue minerals at increasingly acidic pH. Laboratory results indicated that both two-stage and direct flotation provided similar results in terms of niobium grade-recovery. Based on these results, a large scale, integrated pilot plant was conducted using a direct flotation flowsheet. While the elimination of reverse gangue flotation resulted in flowsheet simplification, the dissolution of carbonate minerals and the subsequent effect of dissolved cations on the floatability of pyrochlore added an element of complexity. A comparison of results from locked-cycle laboratory testing and pilot plant testing highlights the challenges of scaling up a complex flowsheet. Preceding the discovery and development of high grade pyrochlore deposits in North and South America, the majority of global niobium supply came from gravity concentration operations of columbite (Fe,Mn)Nb2O6, across Africa (Perrault and Manker, 1981)."
