This paper presents a brief picture of the quality of coal produced in Eastern Canada for use in thermal generating stations. It describes, in particular, the characteristics of coals burned in six power plants -two in New Brunswick and four in Nova Scotia. Each station is dis-cussed in turn, and comments are made on the coals used therein with regards to origin and physical and chemical properties affecting station operation. A table of coal data shows, at a glance, the wide variation in the quality of coals received by these stations from producers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. "The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy." T HIS is the opening statement in a paper which was presented by Mr. D. A. Pirttinen at the Coal Division's Toronto meeting in April, 1960. In bringing the power engineer's viewpoint to the coal producers' attention, Mr. Pirttinen made a survey of utility steam plants operating in Canada, and the results of this survey formed the basis for his paper, which he titled: "Generating Station Coal Quality.

There appears to a definite trend toward the hoisting of greater tonnages from greater depths. There is every indication that this trend will continue and we feel that improvements in the design, fabrication and installation of mine guides will be of significant importance in the future. The present state of the art in mine-shaft guide systems is reviewed and the parameters required for improvement are derived in this paper. Finally, a proposal is made for a new steel guide system which meets the parameters and is economical to fabricate and install.

"8.1. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this chapter is not to provide precedents or examples of provisions, but rather to offer some comments that may be worth considering in the negotiation or review of an agreement. These comments are not intended to be exhaustive. It must also be noted that, although the chapter is written in the context of a common law joint venture, the concepts and concerns for the most part apply equally to a corporation that is owned by only a few shareholders for the purpose of participating in the project held by the corporation.The corporation has the advantage of having much of its organization established by local corporate law, but the particular wishes of the shareholders will appear in a shareholders’ agreement. The principal differences will be surprisingly small, save for the acquisition provisions that appear in a farm-in agreement1 and the substantial portion of the joint venture agreement devoted to creating and organizing the joint venture entity. Where the joint venture agreement refers to venturers and committees, the shareholders’ agreement will refer to shareholders and the board of directors, but both will have to deal with such basic matters as decision-making, default, dispute resolution, first refusals, funding, and carrying out work on the project. For convenience, this chapter usually refers to “venturers”, which may be taken to include shareholders.Negotiations give rise to many varying circumstances and concerns, and the main asset of the negotiator is an open and flexible mind. A desired result can often be accomplished indirectly in circumstances where the other side has adopted an inflexible position on a suggested approach. As precedents and standard forms tend to focus a negotiator’s thinking, they can be counterproductive. It is after the deal has been agreed to that a precedent can be of great assistance to the draftsman.The concepts are arranged in alphabetical order for convenience, not to suggest their sequence or position in an agreement or their relative importance. An agreement should adopt a progression of subjects in what the parties consider a logical sequence to read and work with. However, experience has indicated that it is best to set out in a single article the substance of the deal (i.e. the terms relating to the farm-in and what the acquiring party has to do to acquire his interest), preferably near the beginning of an agreement. The acquisition of the interest is, after all, the first order of business. The joint venture provisions will then follow in a reasonable sequence. It is also worthwhile to devote a single article to any special provisions that may apply during the earn-in period. For example, it may be provided that, although all work is to be done by the acquiring party as operator (with the duty of care, liability, and reporting requirements as set out in the joint venture sections of the agreement), but during the acquisition period, the acquiring party, acting as operator, may be at liberty to do such work as he wishes, without the need for any committee or other approvals, and committee meetings may be suspended.2An agreement is divided into paragraphs and articles to make it easier for the parties to read and understand, and to assist a party in finding “that provision” when the need arises. A comprehensive table of contents will also assist the parties who must work under an agreement. An added benefit of a table of contents is that in preparing it, the draftsman sees the overall structure of the agreement and will often catch and correct flaws."

This paper reviews industrial gases used in primary copper production. Copper smelting industrial gas demand has steadily increased since the first commercial oxygenconcentrate smelting in 1952 [1]. In copper production oxygen for smelting is the dominant industrial gas use followed by oxygen for converting. Nitrogen is finding increased use in copper smelters. Nitrogen is used for porous plugs for copper converting and anode refining [2-5]. Nitrogen can be used for concentrate drying [6,7] and is also used in some Ni-Cu smelters as a coolant in Peirce-Smith converting [8,9]. Industrial gas supply options of cryogenic or adsorbent based on-site plant or cryogenic liquid delivery are detailed.

Remote and isolated, located in a frigid, hostile environment, the Black Angel mine in Greenland had to create a warm social environment which would help attract and retain a stable work force of miners and support staff. The high cost of personnel turnover plagues many mines and, when the mine is inside the Arctic Circle, accessible by helicopters which are highly vulnerable to unpredictable weather conditions during the long, dark winters, the potential costs of personnel turnover become critical factors in the success or failure of the mining venture. Manpower planning should start from the date the engineers begin the technical design of the new mine. The plan should include provisions not only to ensure an adequate, skilled work force, but also to ensure a stable work force of people who are happy enough in the mining environment to want to remain, take their vacation and return to work at the mine. The skilled work force was assured with training courses of four months, designed to produce highly specialized underground workers from unskilled Danes and Greenlanders supported by trained Swedish and other Scandinavian miners. The stable social unit was assured by plans the primary attribute of which had to be flexibility. The accommodation changed from shared accommodation with communal washroom facilities to single accommodation with private washroom facilities. A recreational director was hired to help the workers make use of elaborate recreational facilities. A closed-circuit TV and radio system was installed to operate as a private broadcasting system using taped programs originally broadcast on European TV networks or developed by the mine personnel themselves. The liquor rules were changed and the mine manager became a licensed innkeeper responsible for the orderly operation of the Black Angel Bar in accordance with the Danish laws governing the services of a public bar. The result is a relatively stable work force. Some 35% of the people have more than two years' service with the company, Greenex A/S, and some 62% complete 10 months of service.

Brake testing of large mining trucks was initiated in British. Columbia in 1969 following an accident involving the failure of the service brakes of a l00-ton electric-drive truck. Some selected results of the 1976 brake test program are presented and discussed ?in this paper . The tests were conducted on end- dump trucks having load capacities ranging from 85 to 235 tons. All tests were made with the vehicles fully loaded operating on downhill grades varying from 8 to 10 %. Stopping distances were measured from initial speeds varying between 10 and 39 mph. The results are adequate, in most cases, to determine the "ultimate" capabilities of the service brakes of varying models and sizes of haulage trucks operating in British Columbia mines.

"This paper examines the economic advantages of adapting the production grade and recovery targets of a flotation circuit as a function of metal prices. The study is periormed using a steady state simulator for a Cu-Zn differential flotation circuit operating under the following strategies of 1) Maintaining constant operating targets, 2) Maximizing individual circuit Net Smelter Return and 3) Maximizing the global Cu-Zn circuit efficiency. Results are compared to assess whether or not one of the strategies produces benefits significantly higher than the others. Spontaneous combustion of coal is a significant hazard in underground coal mines. It causes serious problems for miners for many years after the fact. It threatens workers? lives and causes economic losses for companies. It disrupts coal production and makes it necessary to abandon the main drift where the spontaneous combustion occurred. Coal fires have to be prevented before they occur; otherwise they are very hard to control. Precautions thus have to be taken in potentially risky areas. For coal to spontaneously combust, it needs 3 elements: fuel, oxygen and heat. If one of them is missing, the fire cannot occur. The best way to prevent spontaneous combustion is to prevent contact between coal and air. Coating of the coal surface with an air-proof lining material would be a practical and useful solution to prevent spontaneous combustion of coal. In the scope of this study, a lining material for coating the coal surface was designed at laboratory conditions. Lining material to be used for preventing coal fires should be airproof, cheap, sufficiently strong, have low rebound, be water- and heat-resistant, and easily obtained and applied. It should also be safe for human health when in contact with mine ventilation. By considering these obligations, 3 kinds of gypsum (plaster, satin plaster, molding plaster), as well as lime, cement and fly ash and different mixtures of these materials were applied in laboratory conditions to form a lining material. Samples of lining material were subjected to uniaxial compressive strength tests to determine their behavior against roof loads. Although there is no need to carry any roof load, the lining material has to be sufficiently strong to stay in place on the applied surface. If the lining material is broken, coal and oxygen can react again. Air permeability and curing time of the mixtures were also tested in laboratory conditions. Then the tested mixtures were applied on a wall with a pump to test the applicability of mixtures. After all tests were performed in laboratory, the most suitable mixture was determined as the optimal lining material to prevent coal fires.

SOME small vanadium-bearing deposits on the west coast of British Columbia about 100 miles north of Vancouver are of interest for several reasons. They are of a type that is, so far as we know, unique. They are difficult to identify as being vanadiferous so that, unless they are described, other similar deposits could easily pass unrecognized. Furthermore, although none of them has as yet been proven to be of commercial proportions, no good reason is apparent why larger, and therefore valuable, deposits should not occur under similar geological conditions. The original discovery on Quadra island was made in 1932 and has been recorded by H. V. Ellsworth and H. C. Gunning (l). Since 1932, prospecting in the area has revealed other similar deposits, one about a mile south of the original and another some ten miles to the east, near Menzies bay on Vancouver island. The Quadra Island showings are a mile and a half north of the head of Gowland harbour, a small inlet that is easily reached by gas boat from Campbell river, about four miles to the southeast on Vancouver island. The deposits were examined by the writers in the spring of 1943 in connection with field work sponsored by the Department of Geology, University of British Columbia. We are indebted to Mr. G. A. "During the summer of 1968, the author was employed in the Research Department of Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited, Hamilton, Ontario. Over the years, Dofasco has been conducting a program for developing more efficient control of its basic oxygen steelmaking process. The author was thus able to obtain a variety of viewpoints from both research engineers and furnace operators. He also had access to extensive literature dealing with BOF control schemes underway at other major steel producers. This paper describes the present state of developments in BOF steelmaking control.The necessity for efficient BOF control is pointed out. To appreciate the variables to be controlled, a brief outline of process fundamentals is included. Technical aspects of present methods of practical control are examined in detail; the relative merits of dynamic over static control models are emphasized. Finally, it is shown how an effective dymic-optimizing control scheme serves as the basis for closed-loop computer control of the process."

Uranium can be recovered from lower grade uranium ores (<800 mg/kg U3O8), leach residues, and waste dumps cost-effectively via resin-in-pulp (RIP). Using this technology, no solid/liquid separation or washing of the leach residues are required. Furthermore, the uranium recovery can be higher than with conventional methods. RIP technologies have, however, been perceived negatively due to concerns around potential resin fouling and losses. This paper highlights the advancements made in RIP and discusses a number of potential applications where the technology could deliver economic and consequential environmental benefits by reducing the uranium levels in the waste.

Argentina reported about 40,000 tonnes of uranium (tU) as reasonably assured resources and inferred resources for the production cost category <130 US$/kgU in the OECD-NEA/IAEA classification scheme. These resources belong to the following projects: Sierra Pintada, Cerro Solo, Don Otto, Laguna Colorada, Laguna Salada, Meseta Central and Amarillo Grande. With three heavy water reactors in operation and an approximate installed capacity of 1.7 GWe, the current natural uranium requirements are about 220–250 tU per year. Based on various nuclear growth scenarios, it is estimated that by 2030 there will be a generation capacity of some 3,092 GWe for the reference case, with raw material needs of some 486 tU per year. Currently, there are no perspectives for local uranium production in the short term, and it is thought that uranium projects with identified resources must complete resource delineation and advance in technical pre-feasibility studies for the recovery of uranium. It is expected that Argentina continue meeting the uranium demand with imports in the next following years. In the Latin America region, both Brazil and Paraguay could be considered as potential uranium suppliers. In conclusion, despite the apparent growth prospects for the use of nuclear energy to generate electricity in Argentina, there are no immediate prospects for the provision of uranium oxide concentrates from domestic deposits for fuel fabrication. This has implications for supply and energy security.

The hot deformation behavior of Pure Mg and Mg-0.29Ce alloy were studied by isothermal hot compression tests in the temperature range of 250 - 500°C and strain rate range of 10-3 - 102 s-1 in a computer-controlled 50kN servo hydraulic universal testing machine (UTM). The results show that the flow stress of Mg pure and Mg-0.29Ce alloy increases with strain rate and decreases after a peak value, indicating dynamic recovery and recrystallization. Process efficiency was increased by nearly 10 to 12% by addition of Ce in Mg. Mg pure exhibits instability zones between 250-275°C at 10 ? 102 s-1 and 400¬500°C at 101 ? 102 s-1 temperatures and strain rates respectively, rest is the safe deformation zone. Wherein, Mg-0.29 Ce exhibits two low efficiency zones from 250 ? 300°C at 10-2? 10° s-1, 400 ? 500°C at 101 ? 102s-1 and high efficiency zone at 450 ? 500°C at 10-3? 10-1s-1. 4D process maps were generated for the above said alloys which illustrate contours of power dissipation and instability in the 3D space of strain rate, temperature and strain.

"Continued and expanded use of underground diesel-powered equipment is considered desirable in order to achieve necessary production capability, particularly when coal becomes increasingly in demand as an energy source. Although diesel engines are derated for underground use, concern has been expressed in many quarters regarding the health effects of worker exposure to diesel-generated particulate and NOx emissions. This concern will increase as Canadian diesel fuel quality becomes heavier and with higher sulphur content. This could result in a requirement to increase ventilation rates by 50%.This paper describes the results of studies of various approaches designed to reduce diesel emissions. Two major approaches have been followed: fuel modification, and emission control hardware development. The results of progress in the development of these approaches will be described.Fuel modification includes the application of water/diesel and methanol/diesel fuel emulsions to the engine. Details of the techniques employed in this approach will be described, together with the effects on diesel emissions. (The paper is concerned with the emission aspects only, not the possible major engine modifications and/ or substitute materials of construction for 100070 methanol.) Use of methanol has the added advantage of acting as a diesel fuel substitute and extender, and there are expectations that underground diesel engines could eventually operate on close to 100% methanol fuel, thereby eliminating particulate emissions. The results of emission control hardware development will also be presented and will include the effects of catalysts, water scrubbers, exhaust filters and exhaust gas recirculation techniques on emissions. A combined systems approach employing a number of these components appears to be the most viable method of controlling the complete array of diesel emissions.This work should culminate in a better understanding of the costs involved in employing fuel modification or emission control hardware relative to the costs of increased ventilation which mpy be necessary to maintain a safe working environment for the underground worker."

The eastern and southeastern regions of Ohio are part of Appalachian coal country, with a documented 1,300 miles of streams impacted by acid mine drainage. Since 1995, partnerships of local watershed groups, government agencies, private industries and universities have focused on the remediation of the affected waterways. The partnerships have spent $2.4 million annually in constructing and operating treatment systems such as wetlands, anoxic limestone drains, successive alkalinity production systems, steel slag leach beds, and lime dosers. These systems have been partially successful, and water quality has improved in the region, but no treatment has yet met the ultimate objectives of low cost, continual remediation. Our research group has investigated an alternative system for acid mine drainage treatment: electrolysis combined with pH adjustment to selectively precipitate recoverable, saleable metal products to offset the cost of treatment. We utilized a $0.2 million pilot facility constructed by the Wayne National Forest, in Nelsonville, Ohio, to process approximately 40 L/min of mine drainage from surrounding seeps. The pilot facility has multipurpose tanks that can be adapted to process acid mine drainage with different characteristics, such as high or low aluminum content or high or low carbonate concentrations. Sodium hydroxide was used for pH adjustment. Results indicate that saleable product can be generated with this treatment technology. In an initial, not optimized trial, one seep yielded 4.7 kg of dried 69 % iron oxide product from 10 hours of pilot facility operation, treating 23,000 L with electricity costs of $4.68. Dissolved iron concentrations in the water were reduced from 242 ± 18 mg/L to 2.8 ± 2.0 mg/L (99.0 % removal) while the initial acidity of 443 mg/L as CaCO3 was neutralized to an alkalinity of 160 mg/L as CaCO3. Iron oxide can be sold as pigment for an average of $1.47 per kg in the United States. Currently, approximately 80 % of all pigment used in the United States is imported, and there is incentive to purchase domestically recovered pigment. If the iron oxide from the pilot facility could be sold as pigment for $1.47 per kg, 43 % of the operating cost (raw materials, electricity and construction costs) of treatment could be offset by the sale of the product. Considering the cost offset, the electrolysis process shows potential as a sustainable low cost alternative for treating acid mine drainage.

"The conditioning of natural gas to meet contract pipeline specifications involves in the majority of cases in Western Canada, the appropriation of substantial capital expenditures for treating and processing installations. It is therefore of vital importance to the owners and producers of natural gas to arrive at an appreciation of the economics pertaining to the production and surface handling of their gas reserves at the earliest possible stage of field development. The treating and processing of natural gas often results in considerable changes in composition and related physical characteristics between the wellhead and the point of delivery of the saleable gas. This paper presents a general outline of engineering calculations which can be applied in the pre-determination of the effects that surface handling of gas will have on the composition and physical characteristics of sale-able gas. Emphasis has been placed on the calculation of hydrocarbon dew-points, heating values and shrinkages prevailing at the various stages in the surface handling of natural gas. It is believed that advance information indicating the approximate ranges of these physical properties will facilitate process selection and will provide a basis for the estimation of capital and operating costs of process installations."

Traditionally, there have been three main methods for iron removal in the hydrometallurgical production of zinc. These methods are atmospheric precipitation of jarosite or goethite and pressurised precipitation of hematite. Jarosite precipitation is without doubt the leading and the most commonly used technology for iron removal. However, jarosite precipitation has some drawbacks, such as a low iron content (and, thus, high residue volume), high moisture content after filtration and often a high zinc content. These features make any environmentally acceptable way of using or disposing of jarosite more expensive, as compared to hematite and goethite. The importance of environmental regulations has grown in the zinc industry during the last decade, which will have an increasing effect on new investments. Hematite has several advantages over jarosite, such as a high iron content, low moisture and low zinc content. An important advantage of hematite is that it is suited for further use in the cement industry. However, until now the need for autoclave equipment has limited the spread and implementation of hematite precipitation in the zinc industry. Outokumpu Technology Oy has recently developed an alternative method for iron removal, which is the atmospheric precipitation of hematite. A patented method for precipitating hematite at atmospheric pressure is presented and compared with conventional methods for iron removal. The process conditions, the quality of the hematite precipitate and the environmental aspects are also discussed.
