The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

A zinc-lead-iron sulphide concentrate from McArthur River can be leached at atmospheric pressure in aqueous solutions with HCI, FeCl3, CuCI2, HCl/02 HC1/02/ CuCI2, Cl2, and CI2/CuCI2 to extract >98 per cent zinc, >90 per cent silver, and <15 per cent iron in 1-7 h at 95°. Galena is more reactive than sphalerite and is converted to lead chloride. Except for leaching with HCI, elemental sulphur is the the main by-product of the leach with little or no sulphate ion detected. The rates and products of these reactions are compared. It is recommended that aqueous slurries of the concentrate (50 per cent w/v) are leached at atmospheric pressure with Cl2 in the presence of copper(II) chloride, which accelerates the extraction of zinc. Hydrochloric acid is a by-product which is consumed bYJeaction with fresh concentrate in air at 60°. Copper is subsequently stripped from the leach solution and recycled by reaction with fresh concentrate at 100°. The separation, recovery, and electrolysis of zinc and lead chloride is outlined since this process would produce Cl2 gas which can be recycled and used directly in the leaching stage.

Nickel-bearing ores in North-east Dundas have been described by A. McIntosh Reid1 as occurring at the margins of narrow dykes of gabbro, norite, peridodite and pyroxenite, which are intrusive into the Dundas series of slates, quartzites and breccias. They occur chiefly in the neighbourhood of the Five Mile, near Zeehan, as small, narrow ore-bodies which are mostly less than 100 ft. in length.The ores are massive sulphides containing pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and the nickel sulphide, pentlabdite.A less common nickel-bearing mineral, gersdorffite, has been recently found in an adit, which is marked on Reid's geological plan of Dundas as the Hecla mine, 30 chains south of the crossing of the North-east Dundas tramway, over the Great Northern Creek, and at an, elevation of about 350 ft. above the tramway. The occurrence is in a lode traversing the Dundas slates and quartzites, and is situated, according to Reid's plan, about 20 chains beyond the northern extremity of a narrow basic dyke which is continuous for a distance of two miles in a south-westerly direction.The mine eonsists of a prospecting adit following the course of a lode for about 275 ft. in a direction a little west of south. An experimental study of the soil mechanics of brown coal showed that brown coal consolidates in the same manner as does a clay and that the theory of consolidation for soils may be applied to brown coals. Moisture content is a function of the coal type, the existing effective stress, and the stress history of the coal.The effective stress in a brown coal seam is a function of the overburden pressure, the pore stress and tectonic stresses. Stress history may be deduced from geological evidence and determined by consolidation tests. Application of these principles to the brown coal seams of the Latrobe Valley shows that the distributions of natural moisture contents are consistent with consolidation.INTRODUCTIONThe nature and geology of the brown coals of Victoria, particularly of the Latrobe Valley, were discussed in some detail by Edwards (1945, 1948), Thomas and Baragwanath (1949) and Gloe (1960). A salient feature of these studies was the distribution of moisture contents in the brown coal seams. Recent experimental work, part of a soil mechanics study of the structure and strength of brown coal, showed that moisture content variation is a reflection of consolidation phenomena in brown coal and application of the results to .field condItions verified and modified the conclusions of Edwards in his pioneer work. Rhyolitic rocks are volumetrically significant in the eastern part of the Coromandel gold province, yet deposits hosted by rhyolite (Kapowai, Broken Hills, Neavesville, Wharekirauponga and Waihi Beach) are generally low grade and subeconomic, especially compared with andesite-hosted deposits. In contrast, rhyolitic volcanic centres in Nevada host a number of economically significant epithermal gold deposits such as Round Mountain, Sleeper and Bullfrog. The Nevada deposits are associated with 27-20 Ma continental arc volcanics dominated by ignimbrites (eg Round Mountain), or younger 17-9 Ma bimodal rhyolite-basalt volcanism related to extensional basin-and-range tectonics (eg Sleeper). The Round Mountain deposit is localised on a caldera boundary fault and the mineralisation was deposited soon after eruption of the host rhyodacitic ignimbrite. In other Nevada deposits, hydrothermal systems are linked to the closing stages of flow-dome complexes and mineralisation is localised along normal faults associated with extensional basin-and-range tectonism. The style and composition of the mineralisation is similar in both the Coromandel and Nevada deposits and consists of sheeted and stockwork quartz veins, containing electrum as the main ore mineral and only minor sulphides (mainly pyrite) Likewise, the vein minerals were deposited from low salinity hydrothermal fluids in the temperature range of 200-270¦C. Both the Neavesville and Round Mountain deposits are geochemically anomalous in molybdenum. The deep oxidation of the Nevada gold deposits, dry climate and low level of competing land uses combine to make it economic to mine and process very low grade ore (0.2 - 2.0 g/t Au) by heap-leaching with cyanide solutions in most areas of Nevada. Although extensive low grade gold mineralisation is known at deposits such as Wharekirauponga and Neavesville, it is sub-economic because of shallow oxidation and land use conditions that are unfavourable for open pit mining and heap leaching.

Between February and August of 1986, Dr Alfred Petrick visited New Zealand sponsored under a Fulbright grant administered by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation. The grant supported a research project completed by Dr Petrick having as an objective, the preparation of a preliminary economic evaluation of the mining of six Otago lignite deposits as a source of energy for steam power generation or in liquid fuels. The research is limited to consideration of preliminary geological and engineering data on the six deposits and to the time constraints of the Fulbright visit. This paper is a summary of the final Fulbright report. The complete report including the listings of the computer programs is available from the Otago School of Mines.

The discussion in this paper centres on examples of mining that are drawn mainly from the coal mining industry. The intention is to review the opportunities that exist for incorporating environmental planning into mining industry practice in New Zealand. The coal mining examples serve to make some general points which have some application for many types of mining.

Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division 'of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited since October, 1960. The number of thickeners in the continuous thickening stage was thereby reduced from eight to three. There has been an increase of 25 per cent in throughput and a reduction of solids in thickener over-flow from 3-4 g/l. solids to 0·5 g Ir. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0·25 lb Separan NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3 per cent in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of Separan NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution priOl; to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strippings from 47 to 71 hr. However, there has been a slight increase in the lead content of the cadmium metal produced.The use of Separan NP10 to settle copper bearing residue in a batch process stage has resulted in a five-fold increase in settlement rate and a reduction in purification cycle time.INTRODUCTIONThe Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, Risdon, Tasmania, produces zinc by electrolysis of purified zinc sulphate solution, the raw material being zinc sulphide concentrate. In the Risdon process (Van Arsdale, 1953; J ohnstone, 1953; Ross, 1949) the compound zinc ferrite (ZnO.Fe203) is formed during the concentrate roasting stage. When the roasted material is leached in dilute sulphuric acid the zinc ferrite is not attacked, and it remains as part of the insoluble leach residue, of which it may form as much as two-thirds of the whole. Refractory gold ores have been the subject of intensive metallurgical study in order to achieve more efficient recovery of contained values and at the same time to minimise environmental impact. Considerable innovative gold processing technology was introduced in New Zealand last century, the most notable being the first successful commercialisation of the cyanidation process by the Crown Mines Company at Karangahake in 1889. The Karangahake gold-silver deposit was second only +to the Waihi Martha mine in total bullion production from the region with active mining from 1882 until about 1920 and sporadic production between 1930 and 1944. Reevaluation at Karangahake with associated metallurgical testing has continued since that time becoming particularly active in the last decade as a result of increasing gold prices. Gold processing technology is reviewed and results of some recent test work are presented and discussed in the context of Karangahake history and future development possibilities. This work confirms the variability and complexity of the Karangahake deposit both mineralogically and metallurgically and suggests flotation followed by new and innovative smelting is the most appropriate processing route for the recovery of gold from the high grade ore which could be produced from the Karangahake workings in moderate tonnages.

Sea floor hydrothermal activity in the Okinawa Trough is considered a modern analog to ancient Kuroko-type volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Recent scientific drilling projects at active hydrothermal fields have enabled us to conduct comparative studies on hydrothermal clay minerals between ancient and modern systems. Zonal distributions of clay minerals below the sea floor of an active hydrothermal field have been revealed, which is represented by the distinctive assemblage of clay minerals. Zone 1 consists mainly of montmorillonite and sometimes of kaolinite; Zone 2 consists of chlorite and chlorite-smectite mixed-layer mineral; and Zone 3 is represented by the co-occurrence of illite and chlorite, from shallow to deep. This zonal distribution is likely to be in accordance with that reported previously for the Kuroko-type ore deposit. Similarities are also recognised in chemical compositions of illite and chlorite, which are both abundant clay minerals in the vicinity of the ore deposit. While illite would be formed by interaction with the hydrothermal ore fluid, the formation of Mg-rich chlorite is attributed to Mg metasomatism caused by the involvement of sea water. The successful development of industrial minerals projects requires an integrated, holistic understanding of the metallurgical and product performance test work in the context of the geological setting of the deposit and applied to mining, processing and marketing of saleable products. The product specifications provide the essential starting point for geometallurgical studies. A sound understanding of the desired product is needed to design and interpret a program of test work. Examples are provided from recent studies on bentonite and graphite deposits.For bentonite projects, the naïve testing of only the cation exchange capacity (CEC) as a measure of purity can lead to unexpected outcomes when the deposit is mined. The CEC attribute may remain the same, while other important properties such as pH and swelling index change markedly with depth, due to weathering and oxidation, leading to disappointing production outcomes.For graphite projects it is not enough to report only total graphitic carbon content (TGC). Knowledge is required of the in situ flake size and textures in addition to purity and flake size distribution of extracted graphite, which may all vary from one domain to another across the deposit. Such geometallurgical attributes of the ore will impact on the ‘basket price’ used to estimate the value of marketable parcels of expected product.Disclosure of such information must be considered part of fully informing the market. As with all new project developments, consideration of the JORC (2012) and VALMIN (2015) Codes requires disclosure of all material information. The Canadian Cordillera contains numerous classic porphyry deposits and several unusual subtypes, including the alkaline suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and the Tombstone magmatic suite and associated Au¦W deposits. The alkaline suite formed in collisional settings in island arcs whereas the Tombstone suite was emplaced in an active fold and thrust belt in a continental arc. In addition to different regional settings, these suites differ in the type of underlying basement, metallogeny, and the styles of mineralization. Both magmatic suites were emplaced over short intervals, probably in response to specific tectonic events. In the case of the alkaline suite, the tectonic event promoted magmatic processes suitable for the formation of porphyry Cu-Au deposits. The tectonic environment is less well constrained for the Tombstone suite, but the result was the formation of distinctive porphyry and intrusion-related Au¦W deposits.

Heathgate Resources Pty Ltd (Heathgate) operates the Beverley Uranium Mine in South Australia, located on the plains between the northern Flinders Ranges and Lake Frome some 600 km north of the state capital Adelaide. The uranium orebody exists in permeable sands within the confined, highly saline Beverley aquifer, approximately 125 m below the ground surface and the uranium is mined using in situ recovery (ISR) technology. The Beverley mine is a highly technologically advanced ISR mine and is operated in accordance with stringent safety and environmental standards. The mine is currently licensed to export 1500 t of uranium oxide (U3O8) per annum. This paper outlines the fundamental differences between ISR operations and the more traditional uranium production methods, such as agitation leaching and heap leaching, where the ore is removed from the deposit, stockpiled, crushed, milled and leached on the surface. Solids tailings from either the mill or the heap are finally deposited in a tailing storage facility. ISR mining differs from conventional mining because the ore remains in place underground (in situ) and the groundwater contained in the ore-bearing aquifer is utilised as the mining fluid. This is achieved by drilling into the deposit and installing wells for extracting and re-injecting the groundwater which is fortified with chemicals. The fortified groundwater (ie mining fluid) flows through the permeable sands containing the orebody, dissolving the uranium. The pregnant mining fluid is then collected and transferred to the recovery plant where the uranium is captured (on ion exchange (IX) resin in the case of Beverley). The barren mining fluid is then re-fortified and recycled to the wellfields. Once mining is completed in a wellfield, the surface infrastructure is relocated to a new wellfield, and the mined-out wellfield is rehabilitated to its original surface condition. A comparison of 'standard' hydrometallurgical plants, heap leach and ISR shows a number of key differences, such as the rate of leaching, the level of control available to the operators, and the type of contact/reaction that occurs. While limited in its applications, ISR mining has proven successful at Beverley and provides another mining and processing method for the production of uranium.

The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) Mine is one of the future underground mines of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI). Located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, the GBC mine is scheduled to start production in 2017 reaching its peak production capacity of 160 000 t/d in 2023.In order to reach planned production capacity, the GBC mine will utilise an ore handling system consisting of rail haulage, crushing and conveying. The rail haulage system will utilise over 20 km of track while crushing is accomplished by way of three gyratory crushers each with a capacity of 3300 t/h. Nine conveyors operating in two parallel systems, each system over 3 km in length, will move the ore from the crushers to the stockpiles. These systems require a network of larger tunnels and mass excavations to accommodate the planned production facilities.This paper will describe the ore handling system, tunnel and mass excavation methodology as well as some of the challenges encountered with ground conditions and excavation quality during the execution of the project. A combination of lateral and vertical development methodologies and equipment, including drill jumbos, mechanised raise climbers and specialised ground support equipment, have proven successful in the development of a quality ore handling system.CITATION:Pasek, I, Firdausi, H and Chenier, T, 2016. Management of solid mine wastes, particularly waste rock, requires careful planning to reduce the likelihood of sulfide oxidation, and generation of acid rock drainage (ARD). Waste management strategies must focus on obtaining a thorough understanding of the environmental characteristics of future waste rock materials. In this study, a waste management strategy for characterising underground waste rock was developed at a polymetallic underground mine in western Tasmania to determine which materials were appropriate for surficial placement. The criteria for surficial placement set by the regulator were that materials had to be non-acid forming and non-metalliferous. A range of cost-effective field-based tools, mineralogical assessments and mineral chemistry techniques were used on a suite of representative drill core material to determine an appropriate waste management strategy. Ultimately, a modified geochemistry–mineralogy–texture–geometallurgy (GMTG) approach was designed, whereby geoenvironmental focused logging and simple prescreening tools such as paste pH and sulfur analyses were used at stage-one; routine acid base accounting and leachate tests at stage-two; and validation tools including X-ray diffractometry and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS) at stage-three. This approach should be considered for other mine sites at early and operational life-of-mine stages with similar deposit characteristics, to ensure correct screening and placement of potentially hazardous waste materials in suitable above-ground waste repositories or mined-out mine sections.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2017. The Otago Schist is being subdivided on a regional scale into structurally, metamorphically and lithologically distinct blocks. Differences between blocks are subtle, and difficult to map in the field. Boundaries are late-metamorphic or immediately post-metamorphic in origin, and are different from later brittle faults which disrupt the schist. Mapping of late-post-metamorphic structural discontinuities has direct application for basic grassroots exploration in the Otago Schist. The mineralised (and currently mined) Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone forms a regional scale boundary between a block dominated by politic schist and a block with massive psammitic schist, pelitic schist, and minor greenschist and chert. The HMSZ forms a metamorphic discontinuity, with garnet and biotite in the underlying schist, and neither index minerals apparent in the overlying schist. The HMSZ is also a structural boundary between domains with differing lineation orientations. The HMSZ can not yet be traced along strike to the northwest to the Rock and Pillar Range, where the only major discontinuities recognised are the Caples-Torlesse boundary and a normal fault separating low grade from high grade schist. Structural and lithological discontinuities in the Dunstan Range break the range up into distinct structural blocks, two of which are separated by the gold-mineralised Rise and Shine Shear Zone.

An accurate knowledge of the chemical, mineralogical and physical characteristics of ores and mineral products that are mined, processed and traded is crucial to effective resource utilisation, plant design, process optimisation and finally quality control to ensure that contract specifications are met. However, all too often the responsibility for sampling is entrusted to managers and personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of collecting representative samples for analysis, and everyone seems satisfied as long as some material is collected and returned to the laboratory for analysis. Furthermore, sample stations incorporated into the design of new plants are often the first casualties when cost cutting exercises commence. This needs to change, because there is little point in accurately analysing samples if they are not representative in the first place. The resultant analyses can be next to meaningless and the effort taken to analyse such samples is to a large extent a waste of time and resources.Ultimately, a poor knowledge of the characteristics of ores and mineral products limits the ability of mining companies to optimise the life of ore resources and plant performance, and failure to meet final product specifications can have disastrous consequences, including price penalties and more seriously loss of sales contracts.
