THIS paper proposes to give a general description of the pumping and other machinery in use at the Thames Hauraki Pumping Station, situated on the Thames goldfields of the North Island, New Zealand. An idea of the general arrangement of the pumping engines and pumps can be obtained, together with a certain amount of detail, by reference to the illustrations. The history of the pump is rather interesting, and is as follows: -In 1894 the Government decided that a subsidy of £1 for £1up to an amoUllt not exceeding £25,000 be granted towards the erection of suitable machinery to exploit the Thames low levels.With a guarantee of such assistance a company was floated in London, with a capital of £300,000, to develop several properties at Thames. As the old Queen of Beauty Company had produced bullion worth £400,000 prior to closing down on account ofa breakdown to its pumping gear, their shaft was chosen as the site of the principal work. As soon as the company was floated, operations were commenced at the Queen of Beauty shaft, situated at the entrance of the Waio-Karaka Creek, and not more than about half a mile distant from the principal mines on the field.

We can be proud of our growth over the 61 years since the inaugural meeting in Adelaide in April, 1893, which followed suggestions from a provisional committee of mining men, formed in 1892 in Broken Hill.We can also be proud of our technical achievements in the fields of economic geology, mining and metallurgy.Should we be content with the growth of our mining and metallurgical industries over these years? My answer is in the negative. The discovery of new mineral deposits is essential for the continuance and development of the industries we represent.Let me review the background and trends of our industry in an attempt to emphasise the changing factors influencing the search for minerals and their exploitation.Australia was blessed with the discovery of coal in New South Wales in 1796; copper in South Australia at Kapunda, Burra, Wallaroo and Moonta in the eighteen-forties; gold in Victoria and Eastern Australia in the 'fifties; tin at Mount Bischoff, Tasmania, and gold at Charters Towers, Queensland, in the 'seventies; lead-silver at Broken Hill, New South Wales; gold and copper at Mount Morgan, Queensland, and copper at Mount Lyell, Tasmania, in the 'eighties; and gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and zinc-lead atRosebery, Tasmania, in the 'nineties. Stowing has been successfully used in many countries as a means of controlling surface subsidence, minimi ing incidences of spontaneous combustion, maintaining gate road stability and maximising coal recovery.Australian experience in stowing is limited but in the future increased extraction of thicker and/or multiple seams by longwall operations and resolution of conflict of alternative land u'ses may necessitate the use of stowing in coal mining. At present there is little incentive for mining companies to introduce and operate a stowing system because costs have to be borne by the individual companies and benefits spill over to society and the State. Cost sharing by the industry and State incentives may overcome the problem of cost disincentive.

During the operation of the Parkes process of desilverising, and in the earlier days of the continuous process, gold and silver were removed separately from softened lead bullion. Gold was removed in the Parkes process by a selective zincing, and -in the continuous process by treatment with zinc in a special de-golding kettle, in each case a crust being obtained carrying the gold and a small portion of the silver. Actually the process could have been more correctly termed a de-copperising process, on accountof the relatively large amount of this metal present, and its affinity for zinc, which caused it to enter the crusts produced.The crust was treated in reverberatory furnaces, where the bulk of the copper and zinc was removed in by-products, and the resulting "gold bullion" cupelled to give adore bullion containing approximately 2,000 ounces gold per ton.For the purpose of parting this dore, a small Balbach-Thum plant of 11 cells was used, and once each six months a short campaign was conducted on the accumulated metal.With the development of the process of de-copperising smelter bullion by means of sulphur, when a bullion averaging about .004% copper was constantly available for refining, the need for a separate de-golding process disappeared.The de-golding kettle of the Continuous Process...

Percolation irrigation of low-grade quartz feldspar porphyry ore with pH 2.0 H2SO4 at 510 litres/m2/day using particle sizes 1.7 - 6.7 mm in columns measuring 5 cm dia × 126 cm long was used to study effects of interrupted irrigation ('rest' periods) on metal ion release and leaching bacteria. Copper tenors increased approximately 16 fold and bacterial iron oxidation activity three fold following a 14 day 'rest'. A linear relationship between copper tenor and bacterial activity demonstrated that this experimental system was effective for quantitative studies of bacterial leaching in ore colums.

Large scale fluid extraction from the Latrobe Group in the Gippsland Basin is occurring as a result of offshore petroleum production and coal mine dewatering in the Latrobe Valley. Groundwater extraction in the Latrobe Valley exceeds recharge and is causing an expanding area of declining hydraulic head in the Latrobe Group, and regional land subsidence which is well documented. Recently the government water sector completed the installation of a network of Latrobe Group monitoring bores in the remainder of the onshore part of the Gippsland Basin. The bores situated along the coastal area show a steady decline in hydraulic head of about 1 m/year which can be attributed mainly to petroleum production.

The dissolution of gold in cyanide has been studied, using both chemical and electrochemical techniques. The electro-chemical studies have confirmed that gold may become passive in cyanide solution if its potential becomes more positive than -O· 5 V v. saturated calomel electrode (S.C.E.). The results of the conventional solution rate tests suggest that, although the solution rate is controlled by the rate of diffusion of oxygen at low oxygen and agitation levels, when these are increased the gold may become passive and its solution rate approach a steady value, or even decrease with increasing oxygen level. The passivity of gold has been shown to be of importance in the solution of small spheres of this metal, and in the extraction of gold from a calcined auriferous pyrite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONAlthough it has been appreciated for many years (McLaurin, 1893, 1895) that dissolved oxygen is a necessary adjunct to the solution of gold by the cyanide process, attempts to quantitatively assess its effect have led to conflicting results. For example, Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley (1934) reported that an increase in oxygen concentration improved the solution rate, but Beyers (1936) claimed that such an increase would reduce the rate at which the gold dissolved.By using an electrochemical approach Kudryk and Kellogg (1954) showed that the diffusion rate of either the cyanide or the oxygen was a controlling factor, and that, if the mole ratio of cyanide to oxygen concentration was greater than 10, the solution rate was proportional to oxygen concentration.These results, although they represent some of the most careful work available, were in direct contradiction to the findings of Mills (1951), who found that gold may become passive in cyanide solution, with a resultant decrease in solution rate.

At the inception of the gold-mining industry at Kalgoorlie the small supply of firewood required for steaming purposes was naturally all drawn from the limited local areas, which promised soon to become denuded. With the advent of the railway toKalgoorlie came the ever increasing machinery and steam power, and the accompanying demand for firewood so increased that the fuel contractors began their operations, by following the timber belts along the Yilgarn railway line, and graduallygetting further westward, until at present we find them as far as Woolgangie, 63 miles from Kalgoorlie, and with the regular railway rates, I0. per ton per mile, this maybe considered the limit of payable timber at current rates. Although in the early days the reserve of timber along the railway line must have appeared as incalculable and inexhaustible as that of coal did in Europe a couple of centurys ago, the day is now near us when even this source will fail to meet the demands made upon it, for, although a good two years' supply is available or the areas under the axe, yet it is time to look ahead and find from whence the future supplies are to be drawn. Along the railways we find the zone of felling operations limited for want ofcommunication, and only such portions of the forests as are within six or seven miles of the railway come under the axe at present while virgin forests to the rear remain practically unexploited. Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. Since zinc was first deposited at Risdon in February, 1917, provision of the most economical cathode assembly has been a subject of extensive research, the major problems being corrosion and efficient use of power.From the corrosion viewpoint, a perfect cathode is one in which the life of the headbar and the deposition sheet are the same. However, corrosion usually concentrates in a narrow zone across the face- of the sheet, resulting in breakages which, before the advent of argon arc welding, meant a loss of a 'complete assembly.Attempts to extend sheet life included use of thicker sheets, multitudinous protective coatings applied with varying degrees of success, re-rolling, and for a time, aluminium consumption was reduced when broken sheets found re-use as protecting strips. This latter economy became impracticable when electrode spacing was reduced for greater efficiency in power utilization.As an integral part of the electrode, the headbar was modified accordingly. Copper headbars, although more corrosion resistant, were replaced by aluminium due to a possibility of dissolved, copper promoting deterioration.Thicker electrodes and regulated spacing reduced internal shorting, whilst provision of knife-edge type supports on both contact and insulator ends of headbars aided in electrode centralising and continuous electrical conduction.After much experimeIitation, an assembly has been evolved which, with the aid of argon arc welding and tbe use of minimum additional aluminium, permits comparable headbar and sheet lives, combined with good electrical conduction throughout the life of the cathode.INTRODUCTION Over 300 tons of zinc are produced daily at Risdon from a purified zinc sulphate solution by electrolysis, the zinc being deposited upon all-aluminium (except for copper contact) cathodes. It is stripped in 72-hour cycles from the cathodes, melted and cast into the customary rectangular slabs.

Upward pressure on all mining operations is coming from the triple bottom line. To some extent this is being offset by the rise in mineral prices, but this may or may not continue. The other serious issue facing all companies is the replacement of economic reserves as exploration levels over the past decade continued to decline in line with falling mineral prices. In order to underpin the sustainability of the mining industry it is necessary to continue to reduce cost, reduce the mine environmental footprint, whilst increasing community benefit. At the same time it is imperative that we increase the economic reserves. The highest risk is in adding new mineral discoveries as the strike rate for economic discovery decreases. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd recognises that the most simple and risk averse route to increasing economic reserves is to reduce cut-off grade in the mine, thereby bringing formerly uneconomic reserves into the economic category. We have been developing a new process flow sheet which embodies the triple bottom line and the issue of economic replacement of reserves. This paper describes this flow sheet and presents four examples where this concept is/can be applied to bring about triple bottom line benefits. Sustainability can only be assured if we are the ones in control of our environment, costs and reserves.

Interest in those physical properties of minerals which might be used to good effect in prospecting is not new. Early in the nineteenth century attempts were made in th'e Cornish mines to measure the natural electric potentials set up by chemical changes proceeding in the lodes. The distortion of the earth's magnetic field by bodies of strongly magnetic iron ore received early recognition in Sweden. Treasure-finders, working on the principle of electrical induction, appear to have been invented about eighty years ago, though were probably not then applied to mineral exploration. By the end of the nineteenth century Eotvos, a Hungarian physicist, had constructed a highly sensitive type of torsion balance capable of measuring the minute distortions in the earth's field of gravitation resulting from variations in the density of the materials composing the crust. During the first decade of this century he demonstrated its value in tracing rock-salt deposits in virtue of their low density compared with the surrounding rocks. Geophysical prospecting began to be recognised as having a very definite value and its development gathered momentum. Its great expansion took place after the 1914-18 war, when its value in oil exploration was amply demonstrated, and this expansion has continued to the present time and shows no signs of abating.Divisions of Applied Geophysics.The four main divisions of applied geophysics are electrical, magnetic gravitational and seismic. With the importance of ores of radio-active metals, one might add to these a radio-active division. The first two are more important to the field of mining, but techniques based on gravitational attraction have their uses in particular cases. Seismic methods are not generally suited to the exploration of metallic ores, but have proved of enormous value in the search for petroleum. With vast quantities of oil as the prize, more money has been lavished on the deve10pment and practice of these methods than on all the others put together.Geophysical Prospecting Methods.Geophysical prospecting methods may be used to detect a mineral deposit directly in virtue of differences in the intensity of some physical attribute common to it and the enclosing country rock. Examples of this are the detection of rock-salt by gravity measurements, or of iron ore by magnetic methods. Of much wider application, however, is the indireot approach in which the aim is to determine, by geophysical means, the geological structures controlling the disposition of mineral deposits. These structures may be partly known from geological work, in which case geophysical methods are useful adjuncts. Where, because of an 'unbroken cover of overburden, no useful geological information presents itself, scout drilling or geophysical prospecting are the only alternatives. Overburden is here intended to mean any covering material not, involved in the structures controlling the mineral deposits. Prospecting for petroleum amounts to the detecting of favourable reservoir structures, and as the chief types of such are the same the world over...

The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Special attention has been given in recent years to Queensland coals.Most seams were sampled as a number of subsections, enabling the internal variations, as well as the overall properties, to be assessed. The Yanacocha mining district is located in the northern Andes of Peru. The project is within the Cajamarca province, 20 km north of the town of Cajamarca and 600 km north of Lima, the capital of Peru (Figure 1). The district encompasses an area of 120 km 2 and is centred on the 78030'west longitude and 7000' south latitude. The project lies at an elevation of 3400 to 4200 masl.

The theme of this paper is the development of-the project feasibility study which includes discussion of the work which is carried out in preparing the project feasibility study, the necessary evaluations and structures that are employed to ensure that not only does the feasibility study itself stand up to scrutiny and is sound, but also that the investment the company is proposing to develop, "the project", is an investment decision which will represent good returns to the company. This theme is particularly relevant when there are competing divisions within the company and only limited cash resources are available to make the correct investment decision. Thus various potential investments may be evaluated against each other to determine which project will be given the go ahead for development. This paper will particularly focus on the various investment analysis techniques that are used and discuss the work that is required in preparing the project feasibility study and specifically the interaction of the project team members and the thought process that must be undertaken to complete the project feasibility study. Finally comments will be made on tax planning issues particularly with respect to taxation of gold production to be introduced in January 1991. Some ideas are presented which may help and possibly improve the financial position of the projects being reviewed. Further, it is suggested that the thought process which goes with the financial engineering aspects of a resource project can be widened to take account of taxation issues and tax planning to ensure the rise of the project feasibility and hence the decision to proceed to development by the project sponsors.

The Macraes Gold Project, operated by GRD Macraes Limited, engaged GRD Minproc Limited to assist with the evaluation of a pressure oxidation circuit, this being the key component of a recovery enhancement project. The initial study gave sufficient confidence in the process to enter into project execution. GRD Macraes Limited was the first company to license Newmont Mining Corporation's pressure oxidation technology, which aims to improve gold recovery from the carbonaceous sulfidic flotation concentrate. This paper outlines the fundamental chemistry of the process followed by a description of the plant that was ultimately installed. A summary of the commissioning is given together with an overview of the production results to date. The project ramp-up was rapid, with design temperature and throughput being achieved within days of hot commissioning. Gold recoveries have exceeded expectations, improving from around 70% prior to the installation of pressure oxidation to above 84%. The project has increased the nominal gold output at Macraes from 120,000 oz/y to 170,000 oz/y. On-going plant optimisation for process parameters is discussed, giving rise to flexibility in gold production, with key controlling parameters exceeding design.

In preparing this paper, the writer hopes to achieve two main objects. Firstly, an indication of the desirable features of coke from the viewpoint of a blast furnace operator should be of assistance and value to those connected with coal and coke research, coal mining, the manufacture of coke and the production of iron. Secondly, it is hoped that the conclusions and opinions expressed herein, which are known to be of a controversial nature, will promote some discussion and thought. In this way, other workers may see fit to contribute and enlarge our general knowledge of Australian coke and its behaviour in blast furnaces.Those properties of coke that are considered to be of importance to blast furnace operation will be examined. Although broadly speaking, the composition and characteristics of coke are inherent in the coals used, any special features of coal preparation and carbonization that affect the resultant coke will be discussed. An attempt will also be made to indicate the effect on blast furnace operation of significant irregularities in these properties.THE FUNCTION OF COKE IN A BLAST FURNACECoke has four important functions in a blast furnace:1. To reduce the oxides of iron and other elements to metal and to provide the carbon absorbed by the iron.2. To supply the necessary heat for the process.3. To provide an open supporting structure in which the descending ore and limestone lie exposed to the action of the ascending gas.4. To provide voidage in the bottom of the furnace, so that iron and slag can accumulate in the hearth.

It has been fairly firmly established (Fisher, N. H., 1945) that the fineness of the gold in any ore deposit varies with the depth from the surface at which the deposit was formed, and, as a corollary to this, that it is dependent upon the temperature and pressure at the time of deposition. This relationship is such that, under certain conditions, the gold fineness, taken into consideration with other recognised criteria, furnishes a very sensitive and reliable guide to the relative temperature of ore formation, at least within the epithermal and the upper part of the mesothermal range.Definition of Fineness.The fineness of gold is calculated in parts per thousand and refers to the proportion of gold present in the naturally occurring metal in the lode, which is actually a gold-silver alloy, containing usually about 10 parts per thousand of base metal and up to 500 parts perthousand of silver. A clear distinction should be made between fineness and gold-silver ratio. The latter refers to the total gold and silver in the lode as determined by assay and is usually expressed as the ratio Au:Ag. Only in deposits where other silver-bearingminerals are entirely absent, which occurs comparatively rarely, can the gold-silver ratio be used as a measure of gold fineness and, in many cases, the two have no relationship. For instance, in the Edie Creek area in New Guinea, the lodes formed under shallow epithermal conditions all carry gold 500 to 550 fine, although the gold-silver ratio ranges from 1:100 to 1:1, in places in adjacent lodes.Determination of Gold Fineness.The fineness of lode gold can be determined only after it has been separated from all other minerals. Amalgamation recovers gold fairly cleanly - unless native silver is present - and the fineness of amalgam bullion is generally a reliable indication of the correct fineness of the gold. If the use of plates is involved, the bullion may be adulterated, but the effect of any copper, or other metal, that may have been introduced can be cancelled by assuming that the gold and silver shouJrl add up to about 990 fine, or by ignoring the base metal content altogether, which varies little in naturally-occurring gold, and in calculating for comparison purposes all fineness figures to the basis Au + Ag = 1,000.The composition of bullion obtained from cyanidation is generally intermediate between the true gold fineness and the total gold-silver proportion as determined by assay of mine or mill-head samples of Cyanide solution dissolves other silver-bearing minerals and the fineness of the resulting bullion is thereby lowered. Consequently, the fineness of cyanide bullion rarely corresponds to the true gold fineness and is useless for diagnostic purposes, although it is a common fallacy to refer to the fineness of cyanide bullion as the fineness of the gold.

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012.
