The Newmont Tanami Operations are located in the Northern Territory, approximately 550 km north-west of Alice Springs. The Granites process plant commenced operations in 1986 as a 300?000 t/a ball mill / carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant and has undergone numerous expansions between that time and the current day, with project-to-date gold production exceeding 6.5 Moz. Annual plant throughput has exceeded 2.8 Mt/a while processing a blend of open pit material and ore from the Callie Deeps underground mine, with annual gold production exceeding 400 koz. In 2013 the operation processed 1.8 Mt of underground ore for the production of 323 koz of gold.This paper reviews the operation and expansion of The Granites process plant since the mid to late 1980s with particular focus on the gravity gold recovery circuit. The Tanami ores contain significant levels of free gold, and gravity recovery has long been an integral component of the metal recovery process at the Granites plant. Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had sane reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one third of the lead losses in the final tails.

A two year study into the effects of coal mining induced subsidence on cliff lines was undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources with the support of a grant under the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Program. A new monitoring technique, using an Electronic Distance Meter and acrylic reflectors attached to the cliffs, provided safety for the surveyors and extensive and accurate three dimensional displacement data on the movement of the cliffs as they were being undermined. The study report included many graphs showing the measured vertical and horizontal displacements, differential subsidence, tilts and strains and included analysis of these movements with various parameters, such as, seam thickness, depth of cover and distances between the reflectors, longwall face and the edge of the chain pillar. Some of these graphs are presented in this paper and could be used, with caution, to predict subsidence movements around other cliff lines, after allowing for differences in geology and mining layout. A mechanism is suggested as an explanation for the observed high horizontal movements around the cliff lines. Sixteen percent of the overall lengths of cliffs that were undermined during the monitoring study fell and the contributions of various factors that appeared to influence the cliff falls are discussed. It is concluded that no single factor dominated as the major cause of the cliff falls and, often, many factors combined to cause cliff face instability.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

The Kainantu area lies within the composite Scrapland terrane which is composed of Mesozoic metamorphic and intrusive units, overlain by Cenozoic marine sediments, volcanic and intrus-ive units and Quaternary fluvial sedi-ments.Four deformations (Dl, D2, D3, D4) are recognised within the Mesozoic sequences, which consist of greenschist to amphibolite facies schist derived from felsic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks and pelitic sediments. The second, third and fourth fold events are present in the Cenozoic sequence, and these rocks are broken by thrusts related to northwest trending D3 folds. South-dipping, possibly lystric, normal faults are recognised and may be related to uplift and exposure of the metamorphic rocks as core complexes.Known mineralisation in the area consists of gold and copper skarn deposits, porphyry copper deposits, shear-hosted gold deposits, epithermal vein deposits and gold placer deposits. Over 35 hard rock and 18 gold placer deposits are known within the area. Of significance are the Kathnell shear-hosted auriferous quartz veins; such structurally controlled veins may be more widespread than proposed prev-iously and offer a new exploration target.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 5.1 million tonnes of copper ore and 2.2 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore from sublevel open stopes annually. Extraction of the narrow, steeply dipping silver-lead-zinc orebodies requires a strategy quite different to that used in the massive copper orebodies. A range of blasthole diameters, explosive types and initiation systems gives the flexibility needed to adapt open stoping to a variety of situations. Hole diameters from 70 mm to 200 mm are being used, with lengths of up to 100 m common for the latter.

Outbursts have occurred irregularly in the Collinsville Coal field since 1954 when an incident claimed seven lives. Further significant outbursts occurred in 1960, 1961, 1972 and more recently in the No. 2 mine in 1978. From the information collected over 25 years a comprehensive program to minimize the hazard of outbursts has evolved. Further developments of techniques to combat outbursts are being developed.

When lying over 200-250m depth, many seams and surrounding strata are gassy enough to create mining difficulties , particularly in highly productive longwalls as well as in their development headings. In addition to the gassiness of seams or stra- ta in the outgassing volume around working, the shape expansion and limits of this one influences much the intensity of gas emission. These charac- teristics of outgassing volume differ very much ac- cording to the permeabilities of the seams and strata encountered by their fracturation due to mi- ning. Moreover, the shape of the outgassing volume is very much modified by the rate of advance of the face. In nearly impermeable deposits, gas flows from a limited outgassing volume. When the rates of advance of a face are medium or low, the shape and dimensions of this volume do not change very much and outgassing volume is translated progressi- vely with the face advance. This explains why, in the past, it was observed that there was for each seam an average steady specific emission of gas, round which the volume of gas evolved per mined ton or per mined unit area, calculated over a cer- tain time, was oscillating. Combined with a statisti- cal irregularity coefficient, this allowed prediction gas of emission and thus to take decisions for air ventilation, drainage, and eventually production.

The Golden Gift is a recently discovered deep deposit below the main operating areas of the Stawell Gold Mine. At an early stage of the project, diamond drilling was used to define the mineralisation on sections approximately 100 - 150 m apart. The project economics were sensitive to both grade and tonnage. There were consequently two significant risks on resource quantification: risk on tonnage (ægeological riskÆ); and risk on grade (ægrade riskÆ). The degrees of freedom inherent in the geological model were considered to be potentially high because of wide drill spacing and likely structural complexity. To quantify geological risk three geologists familiar with Stawell mineralisation independently interpreted the deposit. This generated three plausible, different geological volume models. Conditional simulation was then used to quantify grade risk. Conditional simulation requires the user to define input statistics (histogram and variogram model) and a geological envelope. Based on global mean grade of an ordered set of simulations, æpessimisticÆ, æmedianÆ and æoptimisticÆ simulation cases were defined. The result was a 3 x 3 risk matrix with geological risk (the three interpretations) on one axis and grade risk (also three cases) on the other axis. An interesting result was that geological and grade risks were of a similar order of magnitude. Therefore a risk analysis of grade by geostatistical methods within a fixed geological model is of limited value, especially if the drill spacing is wide. After completion of this study, with additional drilling, the geological degrees of freedom at Golden Gift reduced substantially. A second Golden Gift risk study used a refined geological model to build a set of simulations to be used in preliminary mine design. A third simulation study in the deeper parts of the Magdala ore deposit, a well-drilled part of the mine with production history, demonstrates that the geostatistical simulation method used at Golden Gift is a robust and useful tool to quantify grade risk.

On 15 August 1998 the first section of the PUTRA LRT system was opened to the public as a free service prior to official commencement of revenue service on 1 September 1998. It is a remarkable achievement to open a highly advanced medium capacity urban railway scheme in four years after the outline concept began. Even more remarkable is the implementation of the next stage which is the underground section planned to be operational in mid-1999. The decision to build the first underground railway in any major urban centre is a technical challenge. The PUTRA LRT System can be likened to Hong Kong when the initial MTR system began in the 1970s and Singapore MRT in the 1980s. Prior to the PUTRA railway very little bored tunnelling had been undertaken in Kuala Lumpur. A few shallow sewer tunnels had been built but the main experience of tunnelling in Malaysia had been for water, hydroelectric and road tunnels usually through granite formations. The ground conditions in Kuala Lumpur were known mainly from experience of piled foundations and occasional deep excavations. The suitability and likely difficulties to be experienced during bored tunnelling could only be theoretically predicted. In both Hong Kong and Singapore, government owned corporations were set up to implement the scheme, but in Kuala Lumpur the whole project has been undertaken by a private company PUTRA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Renong Berhad.

Systematic field evaluation of known gold and clay occurrences in South Korea has led to the recognition and discovery of both high and low sulphidation gold-silver epithermal systems. These are associated with Cretaceous acid-intermediate volcanic centres in the southern parts of the peninsula. The high sulphidation deposits such as Seongsan and Kohung are characterised by pervasive silica-alunite-dickite-pyrophyllite alteration with anomalous arsenic geochemical signatures. Gold mineralisation is associated with fine grained marcasite and pyrite. A low sulphidation quartz vein system observed at the Tongyoung mine comprises multistage colloform banded quartz-carbonate assemblages, with minor manganese and base metals. Gold and silver occur as electrum and tellurium minerals. Some deposits such as Gasado and Dogcheon display both high and low sulphidation alteration assemblages. Early pervasive silica-alunite-pyrophyllite alteration caps formed by acid fluids with a significant magmatic component, occur above cryptocrystalline colloform banded vein systems. The quartz vein stage hosts the precious metal mineralisation and appears to have been deposited by later neutral fluids generated in part through mixing with meteroric water.

Pressure filters were found to be necessary to produce Elura silver/lead and zinc concentrates at sufficiently low moisture contents for bulk cargo shipment by sea to smelters.The difficulty in obtaining low moistures was due to the fine primary grind, 80% passing 45 microns, and resultant fine concentrates, 97% passing 45 microns.The filtration system was designed to filter up to 90,000 tonnes/year silver/lead concentrates and up to 130,000 tonnes/year zinc concentrates.This paper details the preliminary test work to select Larox automatic pressure filters, and the commissioning and operation of these filters to achieve design criteria for both concentrates. The design criteria for both concentrates have been bettered due to the concentrates being coarser than the design sizing.

Research in the field of cut-off grade optimisation has shown a relationship between cut-off grade, project life and net present value (NPV). Lane’s theory demonstrates that cut-off grades can be optimised in order to maximise project profitability. Although the theory forms the basis for many open pit mining projects, application of the theory in underground mining remains limited to-date. The main reason for this is the complex interaction between all processes in underground mine planning, which makes it difficult to apply Lane’s mathematical optimisation approach.Recently a new stope optimiser product was released. The AMS Stope Optimiser automates the design of underground stopes at user-defined cut-off grades and allows for rapid evaluation of mine designs at different cut-off grades. Using this software, an optimisation approach was developed and validated on an underground gold deposit in northern Sweden. Potential project NPV increased by approximately 30 per cent when using this new approach.Spatial grade uncertainty in mineral resources was identified to be a major risk in underground stope design. The optimisation approach was further extended to account for grade risk using estimated and stochastic simulated resource models. The process design for green- or brown-fields metallurgical plants typically starts with two fundamental elements: the detailed mass and energy balance and the plant flow availability. The detailed mass and energy balance is generally developed using process flow-sheet simulation software and represents the steady-state operation of the plant at normal operating conditions. The plant flow availability, also known as a range of other industry-specific terms such as ‘flow availability’ and ‘operating factor’, describes the ratio of plant production to the steady-state mass balance. These elements are then used together as the basis for equipment selection and design.Plant flow availability takes into account a myriad of production loss factors including planned and breakdown maintenance, feed availability and composition changes, variability in operational performance and the interaction of batch and continuous unit operations. The combined impact of these loss factors are complex and as such plant flow availability is usually derived using a top-down approach such as comparison to an existing operation, a group of similar operations or to an anecdotal ‘industry leading’ benchmark. These top-down approaches are fraught with risk however, as they cannot factor in changes to equipment selection, flow-sheet or plant operating philosophy, and can result in over-expenditure of scarce capital or shortfalls in plant production.The use of dynamic simulation to provide a bottom-up alternative to quantifying the plant flow availability in metallurgical plant design has been growing rapidly in recent years. It provides a technique to quantify the combined impact of the loss factors described here and a tool to support process design and equipment selection by facilitating a range of sensitivity and what-if analyses. The phosphatic overburden of Christmas Island is a lateritic soil and consists dominantly of crandallite and millisite. These minerals are polymorphs of general formula, (Na,K)x Ca2-x (Al, Fe)6 (PO4)4 (OH)10-x (2+x) H2O. Iron occurs only in millisite. Both minerals exhibit similar thermal transformations, dehydroxylating near 600¦C and recrystallizing above 800¦C. Dehydroxylation results in crystal structure collapse but retention of crystal morphology. Ggethite, boehmite and apatite are minor constituents of some-of the phosphatic Soils.

Ora Banda Gold Mine is located in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. Mining is carried out underground by sublevel open sloping resulting in large open stopes. A Mass Blast of approximately 250 000 tonnes was carried out in July 1994 to recover a rib pillar between two stopes, and the crown pillar between the underground mine and the abandoned open pit above. Strategic development within 50 m of the blast consisted of two ventilation shafts and the main decline. This development required careful design and prediction of the blast results. This paper describes the design of the blast, the prediction of the likely effects, the measures taken to reduce the risk to important development, and the results of the blast.

Recent mineral exploration successes in the Proterozoic rocks of the Mount Isa Inlier are unprecedented in the regionÆs history. This new era of discovery, particularly for æblindÆ deposits, owes its origin to perseverance and advances in geoscience and exploration techniques, notably geophysics. Prospective host rocks outcrop over more than 50 000 km2 of the Mount Isa Inlier and extend a further 100 000 km2 below cover. They contain major deposits of copper, lead, zinc, silver and phosphate (Georgina Basin) and significant deposits of gold, uranium and cobalt. The discovery in 1923 of silver, lead and zinc at Mount Isa established the regionÆs world-class mineral potential. Since 1990, major orebodies have been discovered at Cannington (silver-lead-zinc), Century (zinclead-silver), Ernest Henry and Osborne (copper-gold) and extensions to known deposits at Dugald River and George Fisher (zinc-lead-silver), and Esperanza (copper). This success is of global significance and reflects a prospectivity upgrade since widespread copper mineralisation was discovered and mined in the Cloncurry district a century ago.

The Early Proterozioc Pine Creek Geosyncline hosts a large number of gold showings. Mineralisation types include stratiform, synsedimentary deposits within iron formation and carbonaceous mudstone; disseminations in granophyric intrusives; and quartz vein related concentrations in the form of shear fillings, saddle reefs and stockworks. Stratiform gold deposits preferentially formed near penecontemporareous faults during periods of basin instability. Intrusive basic magmas later assimilated some stratiform mineralisation and subsequently redeposited it within differentiated phases. Gold was again remobilized during regional deformation and metamorphism. Stratiform mineralisation was upgraded insitu in high strain zones and gold was mobilized into metamorphic fluids. Fluid induced fracturing during prograde metamorphism and later uplift caused the deposition of extensive gold rich vein systems. The genetic relationship between gold deposit types is reflected in the clustering of showings along regional anticlines, and provides a powerful exploration tool. The large volume of 'exhalative'òmaterial in the Geosyncline with elevated gold content suggests significant economic stratiform mineralisation may be present, and probably provides a source for later disseminated and vein deposits.

Observations of coal stockpiles subject to unusual levels of instability showed that the particular coals exhibited 'gap grading', a relative lack of intermediate size particles. This led to a suggestion that fine coal particles within the pile might have been induced to migrate under the influence of water flow and to concentrate in relatively impervious layers, resulting in local water saturation and reduction of shear strength. To investigate this suggestion, a large test column has been constructed and washed coals with various levels of fines content have been subjected to a downward flow of water. Subsequent examination of the bed of coal within the column confirmed the percolation of fines and their concentration into horizontal layers, and showed the development of zones of saturation above those layers. Shear box tests showed differences in cohesion and internal friction angle between coals with different percentages of fines, supporting the hypothesis that fines percolation may lead to decreased stability.

Design and selection of support systems for longwall faces call for in-depth know- ledge of strata mechanics and in particular of strata-support interactions. The paper presents the results of field investigations and analysis of a difficult-to-cave roof using powered supports under a massive dolerite sill in Central India using a state- of-the-art datalogger system. The mechanised long wall face was equipped with 4/680 tons chockshields operated on the IFS mode using a 300 KW DERD shearer. The datalogger system was capable of storing data simulta- neously in 32 channels. The paper describes the monitoring system and the monitoring programme. The system provided useful information on support behaviour, build- up of leg pressures and face convergence during an intense dynamic periodic weighting phenomenon which destroyed the integrity of almost half of the face supports. At this point, the face had advanced by about 197 metres from the barrier. The paper outlines a post-mortem analysis of this dynamic event and provides a critical evaluation of the data collected for understanding strata support interaction and the behaviour of the massive sill in the overburden.
