Over the past 20 years within Australia, there have been a number of incidents at mine sites where ammonium nitrate-based explosives have reacted with certain rock types containing sulfide minerals. These rocks have commonly been referred to as æreactive groundÆ. These reactions have frequently led to fires (particularly in ground susceptible to spontaneous combustion) or premature detonation of the ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Clearly, this introduces an element of risk when using ammonium nitrate-based explosives in these areas. Dyno Nobel has been proactive in developing ammonium nitrate-based explosive products that can be used in these types of æreactive groundÆ environments that minimise the risk of premature detonations occurring. A system for assessing æreactivityÆ of sulfide containing rocks has been developed that can be used in the field. Previous literature has been reviewed, identifying Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) as the most common method for determining the æreactivityÆ of the ground. In the present investigation, DTA has been rejected as a suitable technique for determining ground reactivity, since it measures thermal reactions at higher temperatures over short time periods, conditions that are unlike those in the field. For example, ground at ambient temperature has been found to react with ammonium nitrate-based explosives over long time periods, reactions that are unable to be evaluated using DTA. Other more suitable techniques have been developed to monitor rock conditions that can be measured in the field and give a good indication of potential ground æreactivityÆ with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Dyno Nobel is currently investigating the reaction mechanisms of spontaneous combustion in reactive ground, the decomposition mechanisms of ammonium nitrate and the role of inhibitors in ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Once complete, this fundamental research will lead to the further development of even lower risk ammonium nitrate-based explosive products for use in æreactive groundsÆ in a variety of mine environments.

A biological column leach testwork program was undertaken on a chalcocite ore. Three tests were conducted in all, using 65 in x 100 mm columns in three sections. The tests were started with varying acid strengths and inoculated with bacterial solutions from previous column testwork. The leaching of Cu was found to occur in three stages. These stages consisted of direct acid leaching, bacterial oxidation and ferric iron leaching. These leaching stages can most easily he described through the examination of not only Cu dissolution but also Fe dissolution and its subsequent oxidation and precipitation. The p11 of the system was found to he critical in establishing and maintaining the bacterial leaching system. The oxidation potential was seen to he influenced by the leaching system as the oxidation states altered. Test variables such as, 02, COz, and temperature were all found to influence the system. Final copper recoveries were in excess of 90 per cent in each column test over a leach time ranging from 211 to 328 days. Given similar leach conditions are applied, the application of this technology to site is expected to give comparable results.

The Victoria Park Tunnel project is an inner-city alliance project in central Auckland, New Zealand. The existing two-directional viaduct will be modified to single-direction flow, and a new northbound 440 m cut and cover tunnel will be constructed beneath Victoria Park. Three-dimensional (3D) visualisation media were used to communicate key design innovations to stakeholders and the general public. The 3D visual material has proven a useful tool for informing motorists of a new safety barrier method adopted for traffic management.This presentation will explain how 3D visualisation was incorporated in the project and will showcase the 3D visualisation media created for the project.

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland - Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground sub-section of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes Operational.

Located approximately 570km NNW of Adelaide in South Australia, the Olympic Dam mine (OD) is the world’s fourth largest remaining copper and gold resource and the largest uranium resource. Discovered in 1975 and going into production in 1988, the operation consists of a fully vertically integrated underground mine, mineral processing plant, copper smelter and refinery, as well as associated infrastructure. BHP achieved production of 203,000 tonnes of copper cathode plus associated by-products in financial year 2016. The immense size and high-grades of the Olympic Dam resource offer a range of growth pathways, making closure timing estimation and planning a challenge. Current estimates put the OD resource at approximately 79 million tonnes of copper. Major factors influencing the closure timing estimation, as a result of the large resource and grade tonnage profile, include the mining method that may be used and the downstream processing method, ultimately influencing such things as the total disturbance area and the extent of infrastructure to be demolished at the end of mine life. In addition, factors such as the mining and processing method and production rate have a direct impact on larger rehabilitation items such as the total number of tailings cells required.CITATION:Grant, D, Tyler, M and Hill, G, 2018. The southern Attiki peninsula is a very interesting area from an environmental point of view. The port and the city of Lavrio is situated at the east coast of the peninsula with about 10 000 inhabitants and there are also a few villages in the vicinity. The south-eastern part of the peninsula hosts the famous Lavrio mines which exploited the silver bearing orebodies of the area for more than 25 centuries. As a result, soils around the city of Lavrio are polluted with high heavy metal loads. The area is also of archaeological interest, as there are well preserved remnants of ancient mining and processing plants and archaeological sites. Soil samples collected from an area of approximately 120 km2 around Lavrio were analysed for their metal contents and the spatial distribution of the concentrations of ten selected elements were estimated from these data sets. The spatial data analysis and transformation capabilities of Geographic Information Systems, combined with extensive mining and geological data, helped the authors to identify the extent and causes of metal pollution around Lavrio.

The role of biological agents in the gold mining industry is currently limited to the use of microorganisms in bioleaching and bioremediation. However, there is a variety of possibilities in which biotechnology could aid the mining industry in the future. In this article we discuss the potential for the development of these novel biotechnologies and the role they can play in the exploration for new gold deposits, the processing of ores and the post-mining remediation of sites. The development of these biotechnologies has been enabled by rapid advances in our molecular-level understanding of the role microorganisms play in the solubilisation, dispersion and precipitation of gold. An understanding of the distribution of microbial species in soils overlying mineralisation can be utilised to develop bioindicator systems that assist with gold exploration. An in-depth knowledge of how microorganisms interact with gold complexes is being used to develop in-field biosensors, supporting exploration. Processing technologies may be improved based on advances in our understanding of the interactions between microorganisms, ore minerals, cyanide and gold. For instance, cyanide-producing microorganisms are being investigated for use in in situ leaching of gold. In turn, the use of cyanide-utilising microorganisms for the degradation of cyanide is being explored. "Check sampling programs were undertaken at Barrick Australia Pacific LimitedÆs Lawlers and Plutonic mine sites in Western Australia. The programs identified that the sampling, sample preparation and assaying protocols required modification to ensure acceptable precision (reproducibility) for each gold mineralisation type. These case studies describe the processes used to identify the: inconsistent precision different types of test work programs that were conducted to quantify the appropriateness for each mineralisation type steps used to modify the protocols.The type of test work conducted included: a duplicate series heterogeneity test for particulate gold mineralisation in the Lawlers gold deposit screen fire assay test work on duplicate subsamples for arsenopyrite associated mineralisation at the Plutonic gold deposit.Each test work program required a detailed scope specifying the sample selection criteria, sample preparation and assaying steps. The aim of the test work flow chart design was to ensure the assay precision between the different particle sizes or duplicate sample pairs could be measured and calculated. In the screen fire test work the true grade of the primary sample was calculated and compared against each subsample.A high quality assay laboratory was utilised for the test work. All samples were fire assayed and the gold grade determined using a gravimetric finish. The assay results were validated and the data was analysed using tables and graphs in spreadsheets. Following data analysis a modified sample preparation and assaying protocol for each mineralisation type was designed for use by the principal assay laboratories. Himalayan ranges on the northern border of India are source of many perennial rivers and suitable sites for large dams have been located therein. However, Himalayas are young mountains and comprise of comparatively weaker rocks having adverse geological features like shear seams, thrust zones, minor and major faults and intense jointing. Tehri dam project under construction, is located in lower Himalayas. It envisages construction of a 260.5 m high earth and rock fill dam and an underground power station of 2000 MW (Eight machines of 250 MW each, four of which will be reversible) installed capacity. This dam will be the highest and the underground complex will be the largest to be constructed in India in the Himalayas. The under- ground complex comprises of 25 km of tunnels varying in diameter from 6 m to 11 m and seven large cavities of various sizes, the biggest being 22 m in width, 194 m in length and 65 m in height. Rock formation in the power house complex belong to phyllites having various joint sets spaced from 0.5 m to 3 m. Due to the poor geological conditions and closely spaced net work of large cavities, the planning, analysis and design of the cavities is a challenging job. Many aspects have to be considered in determining the sizes, locations and orientations of the various cavities taking into account the properties and jointing pattern of rock mass, functional requirements and economics. Correct evaluation of loads and forces is necessary for economical design of supporting system for the various cavities. Rock loads on the roof of cavities and their supporting system will be assessed with the help of the latest methods. The stability of the rock mass around the cavity will be evaluated by elasto- plastic method using finite or boundary element techniques. A scheme of field investigations, laboratory tests and instrumentation for deter- mining rock properties in preconstruction stage and for monitoring behaviour of the underground cavities during and after construction is envisaged.

Assessing the uncertainty and risk in mineral resource estimation is required for best practice and is implied by the public reporting codes in the categorisation of mineral resources and reserves. One industry best practice is quantifying the risk on future production for a given period, which can be done using two geostatistical approaches: conditional simulation and drill hole spacing studies based on estimation variances. Conditional simulation can provide a more complete and flexible answer to the problem, but it takes a fair amount of time to complete. Drill hole spacing studies are simpler, faster and can provide reasonable assessments of mineral resource uncertainty.This paper is a presentation of the principles, theory and practice of drill hole spacing studies. Various types of risk assessment are considered. Difficulties encountered in practice are discussed, and solutions are proposed. The important parameters impacting the results are reviewed. Implementation of a well planned and executed Management Operating System (MOS) can result in widespread improvements to operational performance but its success relies heavily on the investment by and engagement of the larger workforce with the project. Over the seven month period of the Telfer MOS project, significant improvements were achieved; a 20% increase in monthly hoisted tonnes from the open stope and sublevel cave operations and a 45% increase in square metres of ore extracted from the narrow vein operation. The Telfer MOS was undertaken with the intention that the project wasn’t solely about producing new tools, it hinged on the investment and behaviours of the personnel affected by these tools and alterations. To ensure that the project ran smoothly, the Byrnecut senior leadership team and their operators were heavily involved in the project’s development. In the initial stage, Telfer’s MOS project determined that the quality and accuracy of the information received in the form of radio calls to mine control and completed operator plods was questionable. This required an overhaul of the data collection and verification process in the form of altered operator plods, which was then cross referenced with the operator’s radio calls to mine control. Once the data collection and verification process was implemented, the Telfer team was then able to produce several tools with the aim of providing visibility to the data being captured and its implications. These tools allowed the mine foremen to determine whether equipment was being under-utilised and where they should focus their production efforts to meet monthly targets. Whilst the initial underground project is now complete, the implementation of MOS across the entire site is ongoing with significant operating improvements occurring.

The Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana started processing ore from the Nkran pit in January 2016 at a production nameplate of 3 Mt/a. The flowsheet is a conventional SAG, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) with gravity-gold and carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery. The nameplate production was comfortably achieved within 3 months, so much so, that it was clear the SABC circuit was capable of processing more than the downstream section of the plant. Consequently, a program of de-bottlenecking was initiated to rectify volumetric capacity constraints. This program was later referred to as ‘Project 5 Million’ (t/a) or P5M. Having completed the de-bottlenecking exercise, it became evident that the SABC circuit could not reach 5 Mt/a solely on hard rock from Nkran. The new challenge was therefore to increase the capacity of the milling circuit through a focused comminution initiative that would address the following: geometallurgical treatment plan; upfront fragmentation requirements; installation of feed and mill monitoring equipment; and integration of a knowledge-based control strategy. This paper takes the reader through the various measures implemented to increase the milling rates and to create a stable/ sustainable control philosophy. The paper describes the methodology and results from a study carried out by Telfer Gold Mine to optimise the materials and costs involved in construction of the pad for their dump leach operations. The investigation involved large-scale field testing of five different types of liner and a number of different cushion and drainage layer configurations. The aim was to identify the most cost effective construction methods to allow the final dump height to be increased from 45 in to 60 in without causing significant damage to the liner. The effects of dump height on permeability were also investigated. These methods are described and results presented. The findings indicated that modifications to the existing liner/cushion layer/drainage layer configuration used previously at Telfer would actually reduce overall construction costs rather than increase them despite an increase in overall dump height. Presently, orebody modelling consists basically of fitting a mathematical model to represent spatially a certain geological variable, generally grade. An orebody model is constructed from a set of sample data obtained from various locations in the orebody, thus it is only one form of representation of the true phenomena. Checking the compatibility of the data with the modelling procedure is the most important factor when assessing confidence in the orebody model. The level of confidence in the model will depend on the adequacy of the data set and the validity of the basic assumption required by the modelling method. Fractal geometry is one way of modelling the spatial distribution of a geological variable in an orebody geometry. Fractals can be used to interpolate the Z(x) geological variable at unsampled sites. The concepts of self similarity and self affinity that form the basic assumption of fractal geometry theory which areinvestigated. The population distribution of the geological variable in question must be examined to determine the appropriateness of both fractal geometry and geostatistical modelling methods. The selection of the most appropriate method depends on the available data. A researcher or a practitioner needs to understand the strengths and limitations of the various modelling methods before choosing the most appropriate method. This study investigates the fractal properties of grade distribution using the variogram and some proposed variations as techniques to measure the fractalness. The aim is to assess applicability of fractal geometry theory to modelling ore grade distribution in a deposit. A comparison of the results demonstrates the methods which better capture the spatial behaviour of the variable under study.

A risk-robust development of a heavy mineral resource requires an assessment of the geological uncertainty and spatial variability of the key factors impacting the mining and processing operation. Attributes of interest are the total heavy mineral grade, the slime content and the amount of oversized particles. The modelling of a mineral sand deposit presents two main challenges. Firstly, the exact location of the geological boundaries are obscure due to the complex interaction of the deposit formation processes. Secondly, the properties of interest exhibit a rather complex transitional behaviour across the so-called soft boundaries. Traditionally, the modelling exercise is restricted to a consecutive stochastic simulation of distinct geological facies and orebody properties. This results in different zones separated by hard boundaries, ignoring the typical transitional behaviour.This contribution presents an alternative approach which models the entire sand body as a single domain while accounting for the complex trends present. Error curves are used to infer covariance model parameters without the need of a prior removal of the trend. The principle is based on minimising the differences between empirical and theoretical errors resulting from two methods of prediction calculated for different rings of influence. The added value results from the unambiguous decomposition of the spatial variation into a deterministic trend and a stochastic residual. The trend model neither overfits nor underfits the data. The calculated residuals are thus unbiased and the uncertainty can be correctly assessed.The effort results in a characterisation of the resource uncertainty which provides a more realistic image of the spatial variability of the key properties in and across the geological domains of an existing heavy mineral sand deposit.CITATION:Wambeke, T and Benndorf, J, 2014. The transport network in Europe is probably one of the most important systems for the European economy and society. Trans-national transport routes play a vital role in the traffic of goods and the supply of the population. In this respect, critical road infrastructures, like bridges, tunnels or control centres, can have a bottleneck function. Any disturbance of these structures could lead to negative consequences for the population and the economy as a whole.Project SecMan – Security Manual – is a simple four-step procedure for the identification of critical road infrastructures; assessment of these infrastructures regarding various man-made threats and the determination of effective protection measures was developed. These methodologies are summarised and combined into a comprehensive best-practice manual that allows for a trans-national structured and holistic security-risk-management approach for owners and operators of road infrastructures in Europe.Currently no common processes, methodologies or standards exist in Europe regarding the consideration of security relevant events for critical road transport infrastructures, eg tunnels, control centres and bridges. Attacks on the former can have severe short- and long-term effects with high media attention. A trans-national risk management approach would increase the possibilities for prevention as well as mitigation. A trans-national emergency response strategy would increase preparedness, as well as facilitating and accelerating the reaction in the case of an event.The main objective of the project is to develop a practical process for the identification of critical road infrastructures based on generally accepted security aspects. The texture of an ore type is fundamental in understanding the metallurgical behaviour of an ore. This study will show examples of how quantified textural attributes (mineral shape, grain size and mineral association) can be obtained from automated and scanning electron microscope (SEM)-based microscopy and utilised using advanced image processing techniques. Examples will be shown of integrating quantified and semi-quantified meso- and macro-scale textural attributes as well as how they relate to texture-based visual logging systems. The implications of texture for processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and recovery will be discussed. This research is part of a major collaborative geometallurgical project undertaken at the Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits (CODES, University of Tasmania) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC, University of Queensland). Australia is currently developing and engineering a range of specialised processing options for rare earth (RE) (Lynas, 2011, Alkane, 2005), zirconia (Alkane, 2005), lithium (Galaxy Resources, 2008) and other special minerals and metals required in high-tech applications. The processing of lithium, zirconium and RE minerals is based on complex leaching processes which require extensive liquor clarification, solid liquid separation and solids washing. The filtration properties for those leach liquors, residues and precipitates are not well understood and differ drastically according to the process route applied. Thus, filtration test work is essential for equipment selection, sizing and design. Similar types of slurries are filtered in laterite nickel, TiO2 and other chemical oriented processes, while more experience is available here as those processes are applied widely for a number of decades. The increasing need for dry stacking of tailings requires advanced tailings filtration with properties differing drastically depending on tailings properties. More traditional mineral processes such as flotation commonly apply filtration. All of these and other cases require proper filtration test work particularly evaluation of vacuum versus pressure filtration and the need for cake pressing and/or air blowing for filter presses. Bench scale test work and/or pilot plant operation is common to determine filtration rates, achievable cake moisture and wash efficiencies and sometimes filtrate clarity. While those values are important, there is much more valid information to be obtained by filtration test work.This paper discusses the intricacy of filter selection and sizing based on driving forces (vacuum and pressure air, compression by mechanical means and slurry) and parameters (cake thickness, forces and times) and different processes utilised in common filtration equipment. It will discuss the in’s and out’s of filtration test work design, planning, and in particular data gathering, processing, reporting, evaluation and filter sizing from recent examples of bench and pilot scale filtration test work for above applications together with methods for predicting filtration performance for example where test work is lacking. One focus will be the realistic extrapolation of test work results towards different parameters utilised in full scale equipment and plants. The conclusion of the paper will contain checklist for filtration test work.

Broken Hill South Limited's discovery of phosphate deposits in the northwest of Queensland in 1966 prompted intensive exploration which has proved phosphate rock in excess of 2,000 million tons at ten separate deposits. Systematic exploration for phosphate in Australia was initiated by the Company in 1964. Early in 1966, an investigation of oil wells in the Georgina Basin in the Northern Territory and Queensland revealed widespread anomalous phosphate in early Middle Cambrian Beetle Creek Formation and Thorntonia Lime- stone. Phosphorites recognised in oil wells in the southeastern part of the Basin, Queensland, led to the discovery of the Duchess deposits, Exploration of the Beetle Creek Formation since 1966 has disclosed nine other sizeable deposits north of Duchess around the eastern margin of the Basin. The Lady Annie and the adjoining Lady Jane deposits, by reason of their location, 160 miles south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, are expected to be the first to be brought into production. Beneficiation testing and engineering investigations commenced in 1967. Transport between the deposits and various port sites in the Gulf of Carpentaria has been extensively studied and a slurry pipeline as a means of transport to a deep water island port, is now being investigated.

TSL Concepts and Practical Examples of the Non-Reactive System - Meyco TSL 865 Thin Spray-on Liners (TSLs) have been intensively investigated by mining and chemical industries within the last decade. Apart from the basic concept of spraying thin liners, expectations of the product's performance vary, eg immediate active strata support is seen as a key to control the ground permanently. For many coal mines this is an important factor to reduce maintenance in their roadways and enable permanent production from the long wall. In opposition to a passive mesh system this technology offers immediate active support to the strata. But not only coal mines are interested in TSL technology, there are potential applications in hard rock mines, during shaft sinking, pillar support and as an anti-weathering sealant. This paper will explain the advantages and disadvantages of TSL concepts; it will give examples of successfully applied TSLs with a main focus on the non-reactive and flexible system MEYCO TSL 865 by BASF. Furthermore, it will indicate the limitations and discuss briefly the bearing capacity and reasonable lab testing of such systems.
