Bacterial oxidation technology was successfully applied in a mine site pilot plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrates. The bacterial culture was proven capable of selectively breaking down the refractory sulphide minerals to release the gold. Gold extractions greater than 90 per cent were possible when oxidised concentrate was leached with cyanide solution. The pilot plant was designed using data scaled up from laboratory testing and sized for transport by standard vehicles. The bacterial culture used to break down the refractory gold-bearing mineral was a natural mixed culture able to withstand temperatures up to 55¦C, thus making the technology particularly suitable for use in Australian and in some North American gold mining regions. The pilot plant was operated at the mine site over a six month period. Performance of the bacterial oxidation technology under site conditions was as predicted from the laboratory testing. It was demonstrated that the culture was robust under normal site condi- tions and that the culture could withstand wide variations in the feed and the operating conditions, while still achieving satisfactory oxidation levels. The technology was able to be utilised by site operators and supervisors with minimum intervention. Design data for a commercial facility was collected for a number of different concentrate samples and a feasibility study completed. Estimated capital and operating cost have been obtained.

The Mount Morgan ore-body is intersected by dykes to such an extent that it presents peculiarly difficult problems in extracting ore. These are shown on Plates Nos. LXVII. and LXVIII. Besides ,these dykes there are innumerable "heads," which alsoare a source of danger. Falls of ore occurred in the end of the year 1908, resulting in serious loss of life to miners employed. It was decided, after an exhaustive inquiry, to change the entire system of mining from the" flat backed stope system" to the" square set sectional system ," the latter being more flexible and allowing bad ground to be cut out from a safe position; but it became evident that, whatever system was adopted, there would be more or less danger unless all the dykesand heads known were picked up, and their continuation plotted on a special set of plans on which the general scheme of stoping could be plotted from time to time as work progressed. It is worth while pointing out that, in every other branch of engineering, it is usual to design the work, and that only in mining engineering has it been common to do the work first and plot it down afterwards.The term "sectional analysis" is familiar in most branches of engineering design, and as applied in this paper to mining, may not bear the same meaning, but the general purpose is analagous, and there is no other term used.

Modelling of the Sala Agitated Mill (SAM) using a simplified solution to the population balance approach has been carried out. The rate of breakage is modified by the mill power, providing predictions of the resulting product size distribution for different grinding conditions and mill sizes. The power of the mill is estimated by a physically derived function, using an assumption that the mill power consumption mainly arises from the ball to ball friction within the mill. The grinding efficiency, depending on the media ball size and pulp density is approximated in the model. Experimental work on grinding a complex sulphide ore using a pilot scale SAM 7.5 has been carried out. Good agreement has been found between the data from the test campaign and the simulated values. The model has also been validated with experimental data from a pilot grinding of calcium carbonate and from an industrial mill. The model is included in the USIM PAC simulation software.

Cu-Au porphyry deposits are large tonnage low-grade resources dependent on processing large volumes of material. The ability to understand and predict comminution performance is critical, as it is frequently the rate-limiting step during processing. Parameters required from geometallurgical mapping and modelling of comminution performance are: A×b processing domains based on impact breakage variability, and BMWi processing domains showing grind response variability which lead to Mine throughput domains for a specific comminution circuit configuration. Due to the cost and/or large sample requirements of traditional comminution tests, insufficient data density and distribution of comminution indices commonly exist, making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. One method routinely applied to three dimensional domaining is to have an a priori zoning based on geological features (lithology, alteration, mineralogy, textures), and then apply to all material within a given domain the metallurgical values measured on a single sample or average of samples from that domain. The problem with this approach is that commonly the geological domains do not reflect comminution response, therefore compromising the quality of the average domain estimate. To resolve this problem an alternate integrated geometallurgical mapping and modelling method is applied to model and map comminution performance at Cadia East. This paper uses a data set of ~32 000 assay measurements and geological logging information, integrated with ~150 comminution measurements to analyse and develop proxy support models for comminution indices (ie A×b, BMWi, and throughput) based on inherent geological variability. Discrete downhole comminution processing domains are created, mapping orebody response while maintaining inherent variability.

At September 2001 the beneficiation plant at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback mine is set to treat 9.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore, 40 per cent better than original design. This paper describes the steps, decision-making processes and innovations used to increase capacity at minimum cost. The plant was designed in 1979 to operate at 1133 t/h for 6000 hours per annum, treating 6.8 Mtpa. Sufficient suitable contact ore was unavailable and feed was finer than planned. The plant was designed with minimum surge capacity between multiple process units. It had never reached design capacity. In 1993 a study by Fluor Daniel to treat increased tonnage resulted in modifications to improve plant operations. Efforts to expand production by increasing reliability did not achieve the desired capacity. NJ Morrow (Pty) Ltd (NJM) conducted a technical audit in 1996 with process evaluation by Mineral Processors. Replacement of operator interface and PLC logic in 1997 made plant operation and diagnosis easier. Involving operators in logic development enhanced their plant knowledge. Fluor Daniel Simulation developed a simulation model of the process. Mineral Processors and NJM reviewed the model findings, recommended metallurgical improvements and developed preliminary designs and costs. BHP Engineering produced a detailed design with a cost estimate of $A34 million. After analysis and revision of the design, a $A10.4 million upgrade to 8.5 Mtpa was carried out. Detailed modifications to the process units, particularly the HM drum plant, allowed significantly higher capacities and improved metallurgical performance. The target capacity was achieved in June 2001. Further modifications are progressing to treat lower-grade ores.

In skewed distributions seen in many geochemical data sets, samples at the extreme ends of the distribution are often termed ‘outliers’. Samples considered as outliers can often make exploratory data analysis and resource estimation more difficult and less reliable. Such outlier samples may be legitimate because they are part of a natural high- or low-grade tail in the distribution. How these samples are identified and dealt with in resource estimation can often be a material issue for the Competent Person, particularly under the latest edition of the JORC Code (JORC, 2012). This paper discusses the identification and characterisation of outliers and high- and low-grade tails and proposes methods to deal with them in estimation.For dealing with outliers and high-grade tails ,very simple approaches, such as top-cutting through to more advanced geostatistical approaches, are discussed. The strengths and weaknesses of each approach are also outlined. Some examples of how the underlying geological understanding of a deposit influences the view of outliers and low-/high-grade tails is provided. The importance of documenting, communicating and challenging a given geological model is also discussed. "In order to effectively predict the roof collapse of underground openings using continuum models, it is imperative that a realistic failure criterion is used to represent the rock mass. However, for coal mining operations, there is still uncertainty as to the appropriate failure criterion that should be used for the coal measure strata. This study compares stability numbers and collapse mechanisms for a rectangular underground opening predicted based on three commonly used failure criteria: the standard Mohr-Coulomb, Mohr-Coulomb with a tension cut-off and Hoek-Brown. Three methods of analysis are considered: an analytical upper bound method an upper and lower bound finite element formulation the displacement finite element method.The theoretical results are also compared with field measurements of subsidence above longwall coal mining. For the standard Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, the friction angle governs the shape of the collapse mechanism, and the so-called critical width (the cavity width above which failures extend to the ground surface) ascertained from field observations in the New South Wales coalfields corresponds to a friction angle of approximately 30°. On the other hand, predictions obtained based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion consistently overestimate the critical width. The results also show that tensile failure governs the stability of the cavity and shape of the collapse mechanism when a tension cut-off is introduced for the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion.CITATION:Suchowerska, A M, Hambleton, J P and Carter, J P, 2014. The Wonawinta silver project near Cobar in NSW is under development by Cobar Consolidated Resources Limited (CCR). RMDSTEM Limited is part of the owner’s team for feasibility, design, engineering, construction and commissioning.With a 51Moz resource CCR is one of the largest pure silver players in Australia. A probable reserve of 14.3Moz has been defined for a mine life of approximately five years. The silver mineralization is contained in host rock composed of clays and oxidized limestone. The ore also contains on average 1.3% lead as cerussite, and other minerals. A simple circuit consisting of slurrying of the ore, gravity treatment of the coarse fraction to recover lead, silver extraction using CIL, elution and the Merrill Crowe silver recovery process, has been developed.The “value engineering” approach to this development pioneered over the past decade by RMDSTEM has meant that RMDSTEM has delivered the bankable feasibility study at a cost of $0.07 per resource ounce. It is highly cost effective making efficient use of shareholders funds as well as being very time efficient. This paper describes the application of the value engineering approach to the development of the Wonawinta project.

In the mining industry, crusher-related incidents have led to 15 reported deaths in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA between 1998 and 2007 (NSW Government Resources Regulator, 2024). The majority of these fatalities occurred during routine crusher maintenance tasks. A survey of quarry and mine site maintenance staff was completed to ascertain what they thought of such safety device to understand if beneficial and if so reasons if unused. Overall, findings show, staff perceived risks differently, cost, familiarity, device awareness and not front of mind, influenced adoption. This underscores the importance of asking the right questions involving maintenance and safety staff to lead to more proactive risk assessment.

This paper presents an application of the newly developed risk-cost-benefit (RCB) framework to support risk management decisions for the selection of wall monitoring technologies at an open cut mine site. The RCB framework quantitatively assessed the risk of unstable slope-induced wall failure and its impact on both loss of life and coal recovery. The RCB framework was utilised in the selection of an optimum group of risk-controls to effectively manage the risk of wall failure to ensure safety and optimal production occurred. The RCB framework incorporates mathematical modules that integrated RCB calculations and risk-control effectiveness assessments to determine the risk reduction and financial impact of the examined safety initiatives.This paper provides an overview of the five-staged RCB framework, incorporating the RCB decision support tools, RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its application to slope stability risk management at the case study site. The RCB charts are designed to display a balance between risk, cost and benefit for easy interpretation by decision makers to support the objective selection of an optimum suite of risk-controls. The RCB analysis revealed that a combination of ævisual inspections, automatic extensometers and radarÆ for fast- and slow-wall failures with structure were sufficient to reduce the probability of loss of life (PLoL) to the æModerateÆ zone as defined by the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS, 2007) for the case study site. The new framework presented in this paper provides a method to effectively determine the suitability of risk-controls and supports industry efforts to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).CITATION:Kizil, G V, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. At the Waikato North Head Ironsand operation, NZ Steel Mining Ltd is using a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system to excavate Titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators with a two level shiftable bench conveyor and common trunk conveyor to deliver the material to a processing plant. The system was commissioned in November 1984 and has proved itself to be a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. Techniques of handling high sand faces have been developed and the conveyor layouts are going through a process of change to cope with the variable geo technical conditions and remain within: the characteristics of the excavators. The safety requirements for operating the system have been of a high standard and the experience has increased the confidence of the Company and the Mines Department Inspector's, for the first Bucket Wheel Excavator Mining system in New Zealand.

Tracking plant and personnel in mining operations provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including improved safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control and, in the future, monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques currently proposed and used for wireless tracking are radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID provide poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines and does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, however, most current equipment has not realised the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the Wireless Ad hoc System for Positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines and surface operations, where GPS reception is compromised by depth. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at fixed and known locations within the mine and tags attached to the plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus, wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging down to 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of testing in underground and surface operations showing the system achieving high ranging, hence localisation, accuracy.

Ore definition for final stope planning is often a challenging prospect in underground (UG) gold mines which exhibit high geological and grade variability. Unlike the grade control (GC) scenario in an open pit (OP), the ability for the mining geologist to plan a sampling campaign which effectively characterises the underlying mineralisation is fraught with difficulty. UG sampling patterns are strongly clustered and typically not dense enough to characterise the spatial and statistical properties. Very commonly, sample volumes are not large enough to provide a reliable grade estimate of the surrounding rock. These factors critically affect our ability to accurately map out ore positions and estimate metal quantities.At Sunrise Dam, traditional UG sampling and modelling techniques have proven to be an unreliable strategy for successful stope planning and extraction. The problem was first observed during the final cut-back in the open pit for which the mineral resource model was constructed from UG diamond drilling. Open Pit grade control reconciliations were strongly positive for both tonnage and grade compared to the resource model. Underground workings missed significant quantities of ore which was laterally defined by open pit reverse circulation (RC) GC drilling. Upon examination it was realised that the cause of the problem was one of inadequate sample density and sample support, the implications of which potentially affected the entire UG mine.As part of a broader study into underground grade control procedures, detailed reconciliation of initial stope production from the GQ domain also pointed to inadequate sampling as a major constraint to effective grade control and reserve conversion.To overcome this deficiency, dense 115 mm wet RC grade control drilling and conditional simulation modelling has been successfully implemented with the intent to replicate the grade control process in the open pit. The increase in sample density and sample volume has proven to be a very effective tool for mapping out highly complex mineralisation. Sampling of CIL/CIP circuits is typically done by compositing samples of feed and tails over eight or 12 hour periods. As the residence time in the leaching tankage may be approximately 20 hours, the tails from any period being derived from material entering the circuit 20 hours earlier do not correspond to the head from the same sampling period. Moreover, mixing in the series of tanks in a circuit also modifies correspondence between input and output. A special purpose simulator has therefore been developed to allow for the mixing and delay in the tankage and permit estimation of the head assays corresponding to any tailings sample. Thus more accurate assessment of the day-to-day recoveries of gold and silver follows. The model, programmed in Excel, assumes that the tanks are perfect mixers. By inputting the sequential head grades and considering that no leaching has occurred, the head grade which corresponded to the tailings for each period could be estimated. Allowance is made for variations in feed rate over the sampling period by computing the average flow rate of slurry and thus the residence time of each increment of the tailings. This simple model and its application have been found to be subject to some limitations, which are discussed in the paper, resulting in some unresolved variability in results. However, for a typical circuit even the simple model was able to greatly improve consistency of recovery data with variations being approximately halved by eliminating much of the anomalous variation arising from the lack of correspondence between head and tail when changes in head grade are occurring. Therefore, this permits genuine variations in metallurgy to be identified with greater confidence and thus operational shortcomings can be identified and addressed more quickly.

The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is the world's largest underground cavern for public use and was created primarily to facilitate the ice hockey tournaments for the 1994 winter Olympics in Norway. The cavern has a span of 61 m, is 91 m long and is 25 m high. Ordinarily, rock caverns have a span width of 15 to 25 m, however, temporary mining caverns of up to 60 m have been excavated and natural caves with even greater dimensions occur. The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is unique as it is for public use with a capacity for 5800 spectators. Blasting was conducted with a high production rate at normal costs due to detailed planning and strict supervision of each round. The initiation system and vibration monitors were the main tools to control vibration levels and to facilitate a high production rate. It was of utmost importance that the rock remaining in the roofs and walls was of high quality after blasting to avoid rock fall, rock slides and excessive maintenance work.

I congratulate The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its decision to hold its Annual Conference here in Western Australia. Western Australia, with its abundant mineral and energy resources, plays a key role in the Australian mining industry... and Western Australia will continue to figure prominently in this vital industry for many years to come. The success of our gold, iron ore, bauxite, mineral sands and other primary industries has enabled Western Australia to contribute significantly to Australia's export revenue and, therefore, to the nation's economic strength. The State's mineral wealth has also provided the impetus for a recent surge in mining related activity, including a dramatic increase in downstream processing of our raw materials. Billions of dollars worth of new project investment is either committed or awaiting final approval - and most of this new investment is a direct result of a healthy and vibrant mining industry. The North West Shelf Project - which has been providing natural gas for homes and industry in Western Australia since 1984 - has also played a key role in stimulating industrial development. The availability of abundant, competitively-priced gas from the North West Shelf has - along with the availability of other raw materials - made Western Australia a more attractive proposition for industrial investment. The company I represent, Woodside Offshore Petroleum, is operator of the North West Shelf Project on behalf of the Project's six Joint Venture Participants - Woodside Petroleum Ltd, BHP Petroleum (North West Shelf) Pty Ltd, BP Developments Australia Ltd, Chevron Asiatic Limited, Japan Australia LNG (MIMI) Pty Ltd and Shell Development (Australia) Proprietary Limited. The theme for this Annual Conference: "Excellence - the key to the continued success of the Australasian mining industry" is appropriate to the North West Shelf Project. The pursuit of excellence has been a hallmark of the Project. The Joint Venture Participants have been conscious of the need for stringent quality control at all stages of development. Procurement and purchasing policies, for instance, have demanded strict adherence by contractors and suppliers to the highest standards and specifications.

German hard coal mining operations have decreased for more than 40 years. Current political decisions are leading to a discontinuation of subsidised black coal mining by the year 2018. This decision will, however, be reviewed once again in the year 2012. The enormous increases in productivity, which were achieved in previous years, have so far not led to an achievement of market requirements. Coal mining at depth of more than 1200 m in multiple seam environments is not yet competitive in global comparison. In 2008 the 24 faces left in eight mines produced about 20 million tonnes of usable steam coal. Management and the workforce will be reduced in parallel; from today until 2012 by more than half. The average age of personnel is increasing dramatically and nearly no new personnel are recruited. With this background in mind, increasing continuously coal mining productivity becomes more and more difficult. Above all, this goal was reached by mechanisation, then by increasing the mining machine power and then by enhanced machine control systems. The first attempts to automatically operate full face equipment from above ground were in the early 1980s. After successful automation of the face equipment, the emphasis is now on mine logistics. Autonomous monorail transport was introduced and tested in 2007. Since the development rate of machine improvements has its limits, the focus is on the full interaction of the total production system. Here information technology (IT) becomes important; the driver for more productivity. Actual developments aim for the complete and general homogeneous IT infrastructure both above ground as well as underground. The explosive environment needs high level investments in safe technology, eg access points for WLAN and fibre optics for underground use (ATEX certification). New technology availability also drives the enhancements of management and process control systems. Innovations in the mining industry often comprise technology advances through the adoption of well-known technologies. With virtual reality (VR) teaching and training systems advanced computational instruments, both in software and hardware development, were applied in the German coal mining industry for ten years. Widening lists of applications as well as the encouraging achievements show the economical benefits of investing in virtual reality technology both for teaching and training and for knowledge management. The paper discusses the actual technical achievements as well as in IT infrastructure utilisation and also in employment of virtual reality based systems. Special focus and deeper insight will be given to the fibre optics and WLAN hardware integration as well as software developments. The pocket personal computer (PC) is used to enhance underground material transport and data acquisition. The knowledge-based maintenance system (KBMS) integrates real-time virtual reality knowledge elements, such as repair process descriptions. It gives access to expert documentation by intelligent search algorithms and 3D representations of major mining machinery.

"The carbon-in-pulp process has been used extensively in the gold industry since the late 1970s to recovery leached gold from solution. Despite more than 30 years of experience in operating carbon circuits, average gold solution loss has remained at an average of 0.02–0.03 ppm (mg/L), higher than the ‘best practice’ target of 0.01 ppm.Process modelling, such as SIMCIL developed by the Curtin Gold Technology Group (GTG), can provide information on optimum set points; however, manual control of the circuit limits the potential benefits.An automated carbon measurement device, the Scout Carbon Meter, has been developed to allow for automation of carbon concentration measurement, and automated control of the carbon transfer pumps. Grade control aims to deliver quality tonnes to the mill via accurate definition of ore and waste. It comprises data collection and interpretation; local reserve estimation; supervision of development and mining; and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of high quality sampling supported by geology. The requirement for quality grade control samples has long been recognised, where they should be representative, unbiased, safe and operationally timely. Underground sampling methods include chip and channel samples; grab samples; and drill-based samples. To achieve quality samples, collection techniques employed should minimise delimitation, extraction and preparation errors. Grade control staff should be well-trained and motivated, and mining staff should understand the need for grade control. This paper reviews grade control sampling methods and presents recommendations for best practice and minimisation of sampling errors.

This paper summarises the information about current state of eco-environmental problems, geological disaster and mining waste causing during the process of limestone mining. By comparing the management experiences of limestone mines in other countries, management problems in China have been discussed and improved management options have been proposed here.
