It’s expected that the world economy will face a stable and continuous growth in the demand of iron ore, reaching more than two billion tonnes per year within the next year. After decades exploiting resources with high content of iron ore, now the industry faces the challenge to exploit and beneficiate more complex ores.According to the industrial practice, the flotation technology is one of the most important and effective beneficiation processes to deal with low-grade iron ores around the world. However, even with this, it is still necessary to search for new processing routes or promote the optimisation of the existing circuits.The broad application of this technology is an outcome that deeply relies on the proper selection of flotation chemicals specifi cally designed for each system. New collectors are in continuous development as flotation performance significantly relies upon their optimisation.The reverse iron ore flotation in Brazil, mainly constituted by haematite and quartz, uses ether amines as collector for silica minerals and caustic corn starch as depressor for haematite. The process selectivity is highly impacted by the features of the etheramine, such as:• mono or di-etheramine,• neutralisation degree,• chain length,• branched or linear chain,• the flotation pH, and• the size distribution of the flotation feed.This paper describes the experience obtained from laboratory and industrial trials on different ores, conducted to improve the selectivity and recovery in the reverse iron ore flotation by selecting the required collector for low-grade ores.

The Wisemans Creek derelict mine site is located in native forest approximately 150 km west of Sydney. Mean annual rainfall at Bathurst, 20 km to the north, is 634 mm and reasonably distributed throughout the year, with slightly more rain falling in the summer months. Evaporation is 1350 mm per annum and considerably exceeds rainfall in all but the winter months (May to August). This results in a water deficit for much of the year. Groundwater is relatively deep, as it has not been intercepted in the shallow open cut workings. Investigation of the groundwater regime was beyond the scope of the current study. Mining has taken place on the site for almost 100 years, during which copper, talc and gold have been sequentially extracted from surface and shallow underground workings. The site is now characterised by the presence of small open pits, unprotected shafts and adits, mullock heaps and an unconfined tailing deposit from a small cyanidation plant. From a distance, the mine area is visible because of two distinct steep bare slopes below the relatively small mine workings and mullock heaps. The mining area was characterised in terms of its environmental, safety and heritage issues. Mullock from the early copper mining was found to be acid forming and leachate from this, combined with clearing of timber, has most likely resulted in death of vegetation below the heaps. The mullock also contains elevated concentrations of heavy metals. The gold tailing is apparently benign and not acid forming, although there are indications of oxidation and acid formation in the derelict gold open cut. Oxidation of the acid forming mullock still appears to be taking place even after being exposed to the atmosphere for at least 50 years, resulting in continued contamination of the slopes below the heaps with heavy metals. The concentrations of metals decreases with distance below the mullock heaps and also is confined to the ground surface the further away from the mullock, providing further evidence to support the theory that the mullock is the source of contamination. Despite this continuing contamination, its spread beyond the immediate mining area appears to have been limited because of the relatively dry climate, with only intermittent rainfall and stream flows. Irregular storm flows in the nearby creek could also have washed any contaminated soil some distance from the site and beyond the area investigated in this study. Remediation of the site and restoration of vegetation on the bare slopes will therefore depend on elimination of the source of acid and metals. Options for remediation, focussing on minimising cost by retaining the materials on or close to the site, are identified. The volume of the open cuts would appear to be close to that required for burial of the acid-forming mullock, thereby removing the source of surface contamination while keeping it above the groundwater table. However, implementation of this remediation plan will depend on the availability of funds to undertake the work through the New South Wales GovernmentÆs Derelict Mines Program.

The rare earth elements (REEs) assay and recovery in leaching processes is being determined using expensive analytical methods, ICP-AES, and ICP-MS. This paper presents a neural network model to predict the effects of operational variables on the lanthanum, cerium, yttrium, neodymium recovery in the leaching of apatite concentrate. The effects of leaching times: ten to 40 min, pulp densities: 30 to 50 per cent, acid concentrations: 20 to 60 per cent and agitation rates: 100 to 200 rpm were investigated and optimised on REEs recovery in laboratory at a leaching temperature of 60¦C. The obtained data, on the laboratory optimisation process were used for training and testing of a neural network. A feed-forward artificial neural network with 4-5-5-1 arrangement, was capable of estimating the REEs leaching recovery. Neural network predicted values were in good agreement with the experimental results. The correlations of R = 1 in training stages, and R =  0.971, 0.952, 0.985 and 0.98 in testing stages were results for Ce, Nd, La and Y recovery predictions respectively and that theses values are considerably acceptable. It was shown that the proposed neural network model accurately reproduces all the effects of operation variables, and can be used in the simulation of a REEs leaching plant.

Traditional mechanised resin rock bolting in hard rock underground mines requires the installation of resin capsules into a pre-drilled hole prior to the rock bolt being spun into a hole to mix the resin and set the bolt in place. In poor rockmass conditions, especially at depth or in highly altered faults and shears, the condition of the holes often deteriorates as the poor ground around it unravels and falls into the hole. This results in partially or fully blocked holes that either damages the resin capsule when they are being inserted into the holes or prevent it entirely until the hole is continuously cleaned of debris. This deterioration of the hole condition, and continuous need to clean and re-drill holes, also increases the diameter of the hole which in turn affects the continuously mechanically coupled anchorage mechanism of the rock bolt to the rockmass as there is simply not enough resin in the hole to fill the annulus between the bolt and the rock. This results in a large increase to critical heading cycle time and, more importantly, results in the rock reinforcement not performing as per design specification and increases the risk of instability. To overcome the quality control issues with resin bolt installation in poor ground, a single pass drill, install, inject and tension self-drilling resin bolt application was designed and implemented for use in such conditions. This system allows the operator to inject a two part polyester resin through a self-drilled hollow bolt to mix and fully encapsulate the rock reinforcement. The self-drilling bolt allows for post injection of the hole after the bolt has been installed into the rock and gives the operator manual or automated control on the amount of resin used in the hole to ensure complete encapsulation and continuously mechanically coupled anchorage to the rock. This allows the reinforcement to work as designed and provide the Geotechnical Engineer extra quality control confidence in these conditions. The implementation of this single pass resin bolting system resulted in significant decreases to the resin bolting cycle time and rock bolt quality control failures. In this paper the design, implementation and embedment into the development cycle will be discussed and the in situ quality control checks used to validate the increase in rock bolt installation quality will be shared. Coal is a vital energy source and source of carbon for metallurgical applications, contributing significantly to the world economy. Coal mining and processing involve multiple processes that generate Respirable Coal Mine Dust (RCMD), one of the primary sources of health hazards for coal workers. Since 2000, the rate of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP) has continually increased in the U.S, with severity of the cases also worsening. Increasing evidence shows that exposure to RCMD in coal workers is a high-risk factor for lung cancer, which causes more deaths than the following three major cancers combined in the US Recent observations show an increased incidenceof CWP or other lung diseases, particularly among young miners in the Appalachian basin. The CWP prevalence in Appalachia is four times higher than the national average. Although various regulations are in place, the resurgence of such disease among coalminers demands additional efforts to better understand all the possible facets of coal dust toxicity, taking insights from current interdisciplinaryresearch efforts. One such important field is the interaction of coal dust with moisture in underground mines. Although moisture is prevalent and dynamic in an underground mining environment, it has never been evaluated for its impact on modifying the toxicity of coal dust and transport or flow behaviour. However, research conducted in atmospheric sciences in the past decade makes it clear that moisture in the atmosphere can significantly alter the behaviour of mineral dust. This paper is a part of research aimed at understanding how moisture interacts and alters the characteristics of coal dust. Such insight is crucial in understanding the potential toxicity of coal dust and developing mitigation technologies.

Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

Collector and frother molecules in sulfide mineral flotation are thought to have separate roles in the flotation process, where the collector selectively hydrophobizes the mineral surface and the frother adsorbs onto the bubble surface, inhibiting bubble coalescence. Molecular interactions have been observed between these molecules which allow them to co-adsorb at each of the respective interfaces, improving pulp phase recovery. This study investigated the molecular interactions between sodium diethyl dithiophosphate (SDEDTP) and hexanol, and the mechanism by which these interactions improve the recovery of galena. In this study each of the respective interfaces were investigated for the adsorption of SDEDTP. The adsorption of SDEDTP on galena was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and isothermal titration calorimetry. At the air-water interface foam stability and pulp bubble coalescence was used to quantitatively discern if there are interactions between SDEDTP and hexanol. Microflotation and induction time experiments were performed to determine the effect of SDEDTP, hexanol and their mixtures on mineral recovery and bubble-particle attachment. The results of all these tests were collated to determine if SDEDTP-hexanol mixtures synergistically improve sulfide mineral recovery. It was found that SDEDTP reduced bubble coalescence in the pulp demonstrating activity at the airwater interface. Together SDEDTP and hexanol synergistically enhanced foam stability. This indicated that there are attractive molecular interactions between these reagents. Even though DTP did not adsorb onto galena, DTP-frother mixtures synergistically improved the recovery and attachment probability of this mineral. Adsorption studies with aeration showed that DTP in the presence of a frother transfers from the air-water interface to the galena mineral-water interface during bubble-particle collision. It was proposed that the transfer of hexanol through the thin film enhanced the kinetics of film thinning between the bubble and the particle by destabilising the thin film thus improving pulp phase mineral recovery.

In dense medium processes for the beneficiation of minerals the consumption of medium (generally ferrosilicon) represents a major component of the operating cost. This provides a strong incentive for improvements in heavy medium recovery circuit design and operation. A major thrust in heavy medium plant design over the past decade has therefore been towards circuits which reduce medium losses. In this paper recent trends in plant design are examined in relation to the factors infl uencing circuit performance and medium losses. Operational details ' which have a significant effect on losses are discussed and illustrated by means of plant and pilot plant test data, with particular emphasis on the performance of wet drum magnetic separators. While the emphasis is on reducing the consumption of the high-cost ferrosilicon medium used in minerals beneficiation, most of the principles described in this paper are equally relevant to the design and operation of magnetite recovery circuits for coal preparation plants.

The Beverley uranium mine û now in production in the remote north of South Australia at1000 tonnes per annum û was established to meet a projected, but little-recognised shortfallin primary supply of uranium for the nuclear industry in the early part of the 21 st century. Inthe context of AustraliaÆs lack of bi-partisan support for uranium mining and the nuclearindustry, a four to five year window of opportunity existed from 1996 to establish the mine.During this period, Beverley achieved a number of firsts including: the first ISL mine inAustralia; the largest ISL mine in the world and the first to produce more than 500 tonnes ofuranium in its first year; the first to be established under a new Native Title regime in SouthAustralia; and the first to be established under a revised South Australian Mining Act.Beverley was brought into production against the background of: hostile opposition fromanti-nuclear activists; a suspicious and at-times hostile media; a regulatory and politicalcommunity that was unfamiliar with ISL mining; commercially unsophisticated Aboriginalgroups; an inexperienced engineering industry; and the vagaries of development in a remote,semi-arid location with neither population nor infrastructure. The lessons that can be learnedfrom Beverley showed that û like much in life û flexibility and timing are crucial.

St BarbaraÆs Marvel Loch operations have successfully used longhole open stoping as the primary mining method for a number of years. A transition to Core and Shell mining was implemented in 2009 to recover substantial ore grade resources remaining in sill and rib pillars. The transition to core and shell for the Exhibition lode required continuous waste filling of created voids and thus the removal of the crown pillar at the base of the Exhibition pit by blasting. Access to the top of pillar was denied as the pit was partially rock filled with waste rock from underground development.Beyond the technical challenges of the blasting project, a simple and transparent risk management process was developed to ensure appropriate controls and mitigating strategies were in place to minimise risk to personnel during the pillar removal process.Although failure of the crown pillar was anticipated but with the actual timing unknown, on 25 December 2011 the crown pillar yielded during normal mine operations. Engineered and isolation controls in place at the time were of a sufficiently high standard to ensure limited exposure of the underground workforce and minimal damage to mine infrastructure. Successful risk management through implementation of appropriate controls during the project lifecycle of two years and three months proved to be fundamental to the safe removal of the crown pillar.CITATION:Barrie, S C, 2012. Deep hard rock underground mines tend to experience high stress as such drives exhibit dynamic responses attributed to a rock burst variant (strainburst). This dynamic behaviour is difficult to predict, and every effort is made to devise the appropriate dynamic support system for its associated failure restraint. This paper outlines the back analysis and the support scheme design for an underground decline that exhibited damage from a dynamic strainburst occurrence. It employs a decline section that experienced a dynamically loaded strainburst that initiated rock fragment ejections. The procedure involves a preliminary structural analysis, a seismic intensity measure, and a rock mass simulation to determine the static stress concentration and ground support system response. The numerical simulation is conducted in FLAC3D which employs the advanced strain-softening IMASS constitutive model governed by two Hoek–Brown (HB) bounding yield surfaces. To account for the post-peak brittleness response associated with strainburst the plastic strain multiplier () is adjusted to 0.0 < < 1.0. The back-analysis shows that the occurrence was initiated by a low-intensity seismic wave that superimposed an extra stress component to the initial static stress which triggered rock fragment ejections. Additionally, the appropriate support scheme comprised of Weldmesh, Fibrecrete, static (split set) and yieldable (Kinloc) reinforcements is recommended and implemented. Thereafter, the bolt’s efficiency is evaluated based on the axial force and elongation capacities and then compared with the published bolt performance data. The evaluation results show that the maximum bolt axial force (0.1 per cent) and elongation (0.006 per cent) are below the designed capacity and rupture strain.

Silicon-based photovoltaic cells are currently the most dominant types applied to convert solar energy to electricity. In solar-grade silicon (SG-Si), the control of boron (B) and phosphorus (P) is very critical. Generally, these elements are difficult to remove into acceptable sub-ppm levels from lower grade Si. This study investigates slag treatment as a process for Si refining, focusing on the behaviour of P and B. The experiments were conducted by equilibrating Si-B-P alloys with 43 wt per cent SiO2 – 47 wt per cent CaO – 10 wt per cent Al2O3 slag under inert atmosphere at 1500°C. Different crucible materials were used (Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO), which determined the primary saturation phase for the system and modified the final slag composition accordingly. The samples were equilibrated and analysed with microanalysis techniques (EPMA (electron probe microanalysis) and LA-ICP-MS (laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry)). New standards were prepared and applied in the LA-ICP-MS analyses. Experimental results show that silver is essentially fully dissolved in silicon, as well as most phosphorus with LP ( = wt per cent P in slag/wt per cent P in Si) between 0.1–0.3. The distribution coefficient of boron was measured to be between 1 and 2. The crucible material used had an influence on the phase compositions and slight influence on the distribution coefficients of boron and phosphorus. The experimental results provided new accurate data when considering applicability of slag treatment as a technique for Si refining and Si PV cell recycling.

Is the Northern Territory different? Certainly it is more remote, has less people and relies more heavily on two or three industries for its survival. On the other hand, its mining industry is governed by Acts not dissimilar to those of the major States - a Mining Act provides the basis for acquisition of tenure, a Mine Management Act provides regulatory control, a Mineral Royally Act collects revenue in return for the right to utilise the land&apos;s bounties, an Environmental Assessment Act provides the public face to rehabilitation and environmental safety, and the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act purports to give development criteria for inalienable land use. With the exception of the latter, at least until the advent of Mabo, all these are simply variations on a theme, and are common to most States. This paper will show how the Department of Mines and Energy works in relation to the Northern Territory mining industry.

In response to the implementation of a new schedule for iron ore fines in the International Maritime OrganizationÆs (IMO) International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code, improved measures for the management of moisture have been developed. In particular, prediction of cargo moisture allows management of iron ore fines within the supply?chain to facilitate the safe?shipping of iron ore fines.An ARIMA model, augmented to allow for shipment tonnage, has been developed to predict the moisture level from previous shipments of the same product. The model explains about 60 per cent of the moisture variance. It was found that inclusion of other available information, such as ore composition, train/rake assays and recent rainfall at port and mine, did not add to the predictive power of the model.CITATION:Everett, J E, Linden, D and Maney, P, 2013. This paper investigates ore loss and dilution produced by rock movement in bench blasting. A total of four blasts, in which electronic detonators have been used, were monitored in Cobre Las Cruces Open Pit Mine (FQM Ltd) in Gerena (Sevilla, Spain). Rock motion has been obtained in 137 points of the free face and 6 points inside the block. Multiple liner regression has been applied to predict rock motion and estimate ore dilution as a function of hole coordinates, rock contacts, powder factor/hole, amount of explosive per blasthole, burden, spacing, hole length, stemming length, explosive energy, hole row, subdrilling, blast sequence, stiffness ratio, blasthole distance to free face, rock density and Young’s modulus. The model is statistically significant with a determination coefficient over 0.8. X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides useful information about the composition of an ore sample in terms of quantification of crystalline phases and amorphous content. The use of new, fast detection systems implemented in CubiX FAST industrial diffractometers creates the opportunity to use this technique in exploration and modern process control. Besides the chemical composition of iron ores, their phase composition is also an important factor for exploration, quality control and processing. In the analysis of iron ore, XRD can identify the phases containing iron, such as haematite Fe2O3, magnetite Fe3O4, and goethite FeO(OH), and any other mineral phases present, especially silicas. Quantitative analysis is possible by various classical methods such as straight line or polynomial calibration with standards, but modern quantification analysis techniques such as Rietveld analysis or full pattern autoscale analysis are attractive alternatives, as they do not require any standards. These methods offer impressive accuracy and speed of analysis. Another analysis technique offering great benefit to ore exploration and process control is cluster analysis. This technique greatly simplifies the analysis of a large amount of data, eg from drill core samplings, and automatically sorts closely related scans of an experiment into separate clusters and marks the most representative scan of each cluster as well as outlying patterns. This can facilitate multi-dimensional compositional mapping of ore deposits, identifying regions of favourable mineral composition and allows fast and reliable tracking of the process. It is the most economic procedure to have automatic data evaluation without involving any dedicated personnel in the process. Details of the techniques used, sample optimisation methodologies, results, data precision and limitations will be discussed. The approaches have enormous potential as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ore materials in an industrial environment.

The Graham Farmer Freeway Project in Perth, Western Australia, is the largest urban infrastructure project ever carried out in the State. At a project cost of over $360 million, it also ranks as one of the largest in Australia and is even large by world class standards. The project provides a much needed east-west freeway bypass around the CBD of Perth, linking the Great Eastern Highway in the east with the Kwinana and Mitchell Freeway system in the west. The Bypass will have 6.5 kilometres of freeway, a major bridge over the Swan River, several pedestrian overpasses and underpasses, dual use paths, interchanges and flyover bridges and a rail tunnel. The whole project is being carried out over a four-year time frame, due to be complete and open to traffic in June 2000. The project has been divided into two stages, with Stage 1 including the 1.63 kilometre long Northbridge Tunnel, the subject of this paper.

Although we have access to a wide range of sophisticated process design and improvement tools in combination with a significant range of case studies, the mineral resource industry still manages to be plagued by the negative publicity surrounding operating plant failures because they were neither smart nor safe, together with proposed projects that fail at the first or second hurdle. The general public and the finance industry are generally totally uniformed about projects that ramp-up to name plate capacity on time and on budget and even more so when ahead of schedule and under budget. As the saying goes, good news does not cut the mustard.The following is a summary of the author’s sometimes jaundiced view about why metallurgical plants do not live up to their technical and commercial expectations. In no way should the summary be construed as a negative reflection on the skills of the metallurgical profession. Rather, it is to be taken as a positive acknowledgement of those skills and is intended to highlight some of the major considerations that need to be assessed as a potential project transforms into a sustainable technical and commercial reality.While a considerable portion of the summary is directed at developing hydrometallurgical flowsheets, the general principles are equally important to all aspects of extractive metallurgy.For convenience, the summary covers the following five basic discussion points – project, people, process, patents and politicians.

The first grant of land rights in Australia was pursuant to the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. That Act has been at the core of the dispute between land rights and miners&apos; rights. The mining industry believes that the Act, in giving a right of veto to Aborigines with respect to exploration and mining on Aboriginal land, has been responsible for a stagnation in exploration amd mining activity in the Northern Territory. In February 1985 the Commonwealth Government released for public comment its preferred model for national land rights legislation. The model has been opposed by the mining industry because it believes, first, that land rights is a matter which should be left to the States and, secondly, that the detailed mechanisms contained in the model constrain the industry in the manner of the Northern Territory legislation. Aboriginal leaders have opposed the model because it does not, in their view, measure up to undertakings given by the Commonwealth Government and, in addition, it provides for amendments to the Northern Territory legislation which are likely to result in the loss of the Aboriginal veto right. Are land rights and miner&apos;s rights compatible? The answer is yes provided all parties, including Governments, are prepared to talk and compromise and Governments recognise that the grant of land rights and any control by the Aboriginal people of exploration and mining on their land is not a substitute for raising the living standards of Aborigines as a significant group of disadvantaged Australians.
