The western Cordillera of North America, including more than 99% of Alaska, is made up of an agglomeration of litho-tectonic terranes, some of which have undergone large rotations and (or) translations. The larger terranes can be broadly grouped into a small number of composite terranes based on affinities in their lithology, structure, and tectonic evolution. The terranes reflect repeated episodes of marginal rifting as well as formation of marginal arcs, island arc chains, back-arc basins, and oceanic plateaus since late Proterozoic time. Accretion to the continental margin occurred mainly from Middle Triassic through Early Cretaceous time. Major northward dispersal of terranes was largely during the existence of the Kula plate from about 85-55 Ma. Major rotations are the mid-Cretaceous opening of the Arctic Ocean basin with counterclockwise rotation of Arctic Alaska and Laramide oroclinal bending of western Alaska. The present complex Cordilleran geology along the northeast Pacific rim is a sum of these earlier accretionary processes together with continued Cenozoic faulting and deformation that has been superimposed upon the agglomerated displaced terranes over a broad segment of the continental margin.

Mine planning processes are continuously evolving, increasing in complexity, and are required to be developed in shorter timeframes, often missing important steps in the process. Underground coal mines are also moving into more challenging environments, with the more favourable resources having been exhausted. In addition to traditional mine planning processes there is an increasing level of complexities associated with parallel systems including the preparation of Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) compliant estimates (JORC, 2012 and Guidelines Review Committee, 2014) or seeking critical regulatory development consent to undertake mining. There is a clear link between geotechnical considerations and success of mining operations, and therefore it is essential that such considerations are elevated in both status and priority. It is obvious that geotechnical considerations are paramount in any mine, however it is imperative to accept that such considerations, and the collection of information relating to such, are undertaken from the onset of any mining project. Segment and gasket lining in tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels; and sheet membrane lining systems in driven tunnels are robust waterproofing systems each with a proven history of performance in Australia and further afield. Where an interface between these two systems occurs, the potential for costly failures is vastly increased and additional attention to detail is required in design, planning and construction. TBM cross-passages represent the most common occurrence of this interface, with steel compression flanges and neoprene gaskets being the typical means of connecting the waterproofing systems. There is a large variance in both detailing these flanges and associated outcomes, which makes this an area where there is room for improvement within the industry.The paper will look to tease out the various issues associated with this interface and how they can be dealt with efficiently with appropriate design measures, robust planning and carefully controlled construction methods.The paper will also look to review the new technologies and systems currently being put forward as potential alternatives, including an epoxy tape system, which has recently been successfully trialled on a project in Europe under high-pressure head.CITATION:O’Dwyer, E P, 2014. In truck-based hauling systems, the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process. As such, underperformance of a haul road will impact immediately on mine productivity and costs. Operations safety, productivity and equipment longevity are all dependent on well-designed, constructed and maintained haul roads. With the advent of autonomous haul trucks, the haul road itself becomes all the more critical to the success of these type of operations; not only in relation to mine operators requirements for safer and more efficient and predictable haulage systems, but also in response to autonomous truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment. This paper presents a brief summary of the state-of-the-art in surface mine road design and then proceeds to examine the design and technological challenges associated providing a safe, predictable and affordable road for autonomous mine haul trucks. The paper serves as a basis for evaluating the contributions that enhancements in road design and management can deliver to autonomous mining operations, an initiative that also has scope for adoption within the operating life of many mines, haul roads and haul trucks.

Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.

Bateman Engineering provided process technology and engineering design to China Yunnan Metallurgical Company (CYMCO) for a 30 MW DC furnace for the production of high-grade titanium dioxide slag.Following the successful commissioning of the furnace during the latter part of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010, a period of adverse circumstances resulted in having to operate the furnace without feed and at a low power input for a period of time. When normal feed resumed, a layer of solid material was detected on the slag-iron interface during sounding measurements. The condition of the iron was also significantly altered. The iron temperature was much higher than the design value, but the carbon content had decreased to such an extent that a large amount of iron solidified in the furnace, which made iron tapping very challenging. The slag temperature was increased in order to melt the solidified iron. However, severe sidewall damage resulted, which finally led to a burn-through. A number of samples were taken from the slag that remained in the furnace. These samples were analysed to determine the chemistry and phase profile throughout the slag bath. The mechanisms of formation of the high melting-temperature phase on the slag-iron interface are discussed, as well as procedures that can be applied to prevent a recurrence of this phenomenon. Some recommendations are made for instances when furnace feeding is interrupted for an indeterminate period.

Traditionally pit optimisation and scheduling is carried out assuming that the resources, the commodity prices and production costs are all known. Once the pit contour and the mining schedule have been determined, geostatistical simulations can be used to assess the impact of the uncertainty in the resources on the pit design and the schedule, and likewise stochastic simulations can be used to test its robustness to fluctuations in costs and prices. But it would be more interesting to have a dynamic procedure for optimising the pit as the resources become better known and as economic factors such as commodity prices and costs evolve over time. This paper presents a novel approach for doing this. Rather than working with millions of small selective mining units, it was decided to work with large blocks, called macro-blocks. Mining sequences are defined as the quantities to be extracted from each macro-block in each time period. Feasible mining sequences are mining sequences that respect the accessibility constraints, and also the geometric constraints on the amounts that can be extracted from any one block over time, or from all the active blocks at a given time. Having defined feasible mining sequences, their mathematical properties were studied. It was found that natural breakpoints occur in the sequences when one set of blocks have been completely mined out, thereby opening up access to others. It was discovered that families of sequences exist, and that they are convex and closed under certain types of row permutation operations. Convexity is an advantage when optimising. The closure property opens up the possibility of mixing and matching subsequences of rows in the sequences. Another interesting property is that the sequences form branching families, rather like the binomial and trinomial trees used to model prices in finance and in real options.It is easy to generate large numbers of feasible mining sequences randomly. A two-step procedure is used to find the best one (or the best few) using three economic criteria: expected NPV,the probability of a negative NPV, and the percentage of years when the cash flow is negative. The procedure was tested on a synthetic gold mine based on the characteristics of the Essakane mine in Burkina Faso. The results were encouraging.

AustraliaÆs opal and sapphire mining industry has fallen from its peak in the 1980s and 1990s into a significant low today. This is not due to exhaustion of the resource, but instead an over-reliance of the Australian miner on achieving a fair price for the gemstone product from offshore middlemen dealers. Gemstone and geological research is also at a low as Federal higher education expenditure has fallen with research institutions relying increasingly on private funding in an environment of restricted autonomy and flexibility for researchers. What little remaining research skills the universities have is being bled into the private sector as a result of the mining boom and encouraged by lower than average academic salaries. Nevertheless, some highly innovative research has been taking place, often by self-funded individuals and retired academics simply with a desire to advance the understanding of the particular branch of science in which they are interested. New models for the formation of sapphire and opal are now beginning to be applied to the exploration for these gemstone commodities. This research, together with well thought out plans for managing the gemstone product through its value-adding steps to the jewellery retail level, has the potential to bring about a resurgence in the Australian gemstone industry.

In Colombia, northeast of Antioquia, there is a gold deposit that has produced continuously since the middle of the XIX century, located within mining title RPP-140, property of Gran Colombia Gold Segovia (GCGS) since 2010. Mining materials are taken to the “María Dama” Processing Plant where 1500 tonnes of materials are processed daily. Before 2010, the previous owner of the mining title processed about 600 tpd and directly discharged almost all tailings, given that they had no capacity to put them into final deposits. El Chocho was conceived as a final tailings deposit to store the pulp produced by the processing plant; it was divided into two phases with two dams (upper dam and lower dam) given that the presence of illegal miners at the lower phase impeded a single dam design. A squatter impeded construction of the upper dam; so afterwards, starting at the higher end was necessary (owned by GCGS), building dam 1B to store tailings in pulp; after the squatter returned the lands to the owner (GCGS), construction of tailings dam 1A was required and thus complete construction of dam 1C or the upper dam. While all of this was happening, GCGS decided to acquire a 1500 tpd filter press which currently dehydrates tailings in order to take them to the valley controlled by dam 1A. Construction of dam 1A was designed following the containment wall model, made with geotextile tubes. These improvements generated reduced pressure on renewable natural resources because water is recirculated and less fresh water contributions are required; less pressure is placed on soil, flora and fauna because the area intervened for tailings storage will have a higher storage capacity and, as such, a longer useful life.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis. The Thiess John Holland Group is undertaking the design and construction of Brisbane’s Airport Link Project, the largest single investment in transportation infrastructure in Australian history. Twin Herrenknecht TBMs are being used to bore parallel road tunnels from Kalinga Part in Toombul through to Lutwyche, a distance of 2.45 km. At 12.48 m, these tunnel boring machines (TBM) are the largest diameter machines, outside of Japan, to incorporate annular two-component type grouting through the tailskins.Grout design, preparation and injection have been given particular attention in this project in order to push the boundaries of achievement. Laboratory testing was conducted on various mix designs to ensure the contract specifi cations for grout strength could be met. To study the mechanics of the grout injection process, Herrenknecht supplied a test rig which duplicates the grout injection systems on the TBMs. Multiple recipes were tested, carefully selected to balance the requirements of rapid strength development with high mobility (to completely fill the void between the segmental lining and the ground) and minimal bleed.Team Mixing Technologies, Canada, was selected as the grout plant provider based on the technical performance of their high shear colloidal mill mixers. Field results have shown that the colloidal mixer prepared grout gives almost double the strength of an identical grout prepared by a paddle mixer.

It is hypothesised that increasing the number of loading passes will produce a reduced range of truck payload outcomes compared with four-pass loading. The paper provides analysis to support this hypothesis. It is shown that, hypothetically, loading trucks with five or more passes will result in reduced tendency for overloading and reduced confidence interval for truck payloads that increase the confidence level of containing high end payloads within safe and commercially acceptable limits. Furthermore, increased number of passes provides for more precise bucket load spotting and so improves distribution of payloads within truck bodies. Truck-loading issues examined by the paper include: Improvement in life of driveline components and tyres. Generally tyre costs are relatively moderate; but tyres tend to become an increasingly sensitive performance/cost component as truck scale increases; Reduction of site severity fects flowing on to suspensions, truck frames and structural components generally with potential for reduced long-term repair costs; Less physical body damage due to smaller load increments; Reduced risk of non-compliance with payload limitations for safe braking standards; Increase in loading cycle times tend to increase with scale of loading machinery within the limits of a specific type of equipment (ie rope shovels or hydraulic shovels). Production increase with increased bucket capacity is, to a degree, offset by slower loading cycle times. This is particularly pronounced with front-end loaders but tends to be less noticeable with hydraulic excavators/shovels and electric rope shovels. Decrease in loading time, as a proportion of total truck-cycle time as open pits deepen and dump reaches increase. The production and cost benefits of four-pass loading tend to diminish as truck cycle times increase. The paper also discusses the implications for loading-equipment philosophy to satisfy the future needs of the industry. Cost benefits from upscaling tend to diminish as truck scale increases, so increasing management diligence and close monitoring are required to ensure that expected outcomes are realised. These truck-loading issues have been researched to assess the benefits positive or negative) of four-pass loading in practical scenarios. An attempt is made to determine whether four-pass loading is a æmust-haveÆ or merely a æmythÆ.

A reliable laboratory method to characterise the response of free gold particles when subjected to flash flotation conditions has been developed by AMIRA P420 researchers at Curtin University. This test has been applied to assess the flotation recovery of gravity recoverable gold from free milling ores as well as synthetic ores featuring either a gravity concentrate or gold powder. The Razorback Iron Ore Project is a high tonnage, low-grade magnetite deposit that defines a new iron ore district in South Australia. Known since the 1960s, the deposit has come into its own as the iron hungry world demands not only larger tonnages, but higher grade and cleaner magnetite concentrate ores that counterbalance the increasingly dirty haematite ores that are coming into production.Razorback is hosted by the Neoproterozoic Braemar Iron Formation, a tillitic unit that is part of the Adelaidean Geosyncline sedimentary sequence. At Razorback, this formation forms the southern limb of the Pualco Syncline, dipping at 42° to the north and outcropping along a prominent ridge. The formation consists of a series of alternating bedded tillitic and interbedded magnetite units that represent cycles of glacial advances and retreats. Seven cycles, resulting in seven stratigraphic members, are recognised. Members B, D, and G are the thickest, at 30 - 70 m each, and are the target of current investigations. While the bedded magnetite has the highest iron content, typically 35 per cent Fe, the tillitic unit, at typically 26 per cent Fe, has similar iron content in the ground mass but is diluted by the inclusion of iron-poor granite and metasedimentary dropstones. The mineralisation forms a simple dipping tabular body with only minor faulting, folding and intrusives. Grades, thickness, dip, and outcropping geometry remain very consistent over kilometres of strike, presenting an excellent mining proposition.Razorback differentiates itself from other Australian magnetite projects in a number of important ways. It is not a banded iron formation (BIF); it will have low crushing and grinding costs; and it is located in an infrastructure-rich area close to open-access, high capacity rail, to a selection of ports and to gas, electricity, labour and engineering services. Royal Resources has announced an Inferred resource of 277 Mt @ 25.9 per cent Fe. The company is targeting a resource of 500 - 1000 Mt to support a 10 Mt per year concentrate production. Davis Tube Recovery work shows that the ore is capable of producing a concentrate of over 68 per cent Fe with very low deleterious elements. Metallurgical testing confi rms the ore is soft, and with near-zero initial stripping ratio the project will have a low opex. With access to existing critical infrastructure, capex will also be low, ensuring Razorback will be a highly competitive iron producer in this emergent mining district.

Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Exxaro Sands Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa (see Figure 1). The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. Inflated commodity prices and increasing operating costs demands greater attention to the management of process performance and the company wide coordination of resources. Consequently, the task of deploying operational/technical skills and budgets into the most appropriate parts of the business assumes great importance in order to increase productivity from its capital assets. The mineral sands industry is under the same sort of economic scrutiny that all other industries find themselves, and as such, Exxaro – Namakwa Sands has taken the strategic initiative to improve overall resource utilisation within the processing steps and to measure the costs associated with obtaining this value.This paper provides details of the successful implementation of a Kelsey Centrifugal Jig (KCJ) at Namakwa Sands to recover primary and secondary zircon products from the wet gravity (quartz) rejects generated and stockpiled at the Mineral Separation plant (MSP).

The Bogong Power Development Project in Victoria, Australia involved the construction of a 15 m long mass concrete plug up to 9 m in diameter within the head race tunnel. The plug is critical to theperformance of the scheme as it permanently seals the head race tunnel under approximately 300 m head of water.The location of the plug in the headrace tunnel was determined by a programme of in situ rock stress testing using both hydrofracturing and over coring stress testing methods.In recognition of the importance of the plug, the Head Contract specification requires that its temperature during hydration be controlled using an embedded cooling system. In addition, contact grouting and curtain grouting around the plug cannot commence until thermal contraction was substantially complete.This paper describes the use of bespoke fi nite element software to model the temperature rise in the plug and design mitigation measures to control temperature rise in the plug. These measures include restricting the concrete placing temperature to 10°C, incorporating 39 per cent fly ash in the concrete and installing embedded cooling circuits.Site trials were undertaken to calibrate the model for the proposed concrete mix. The cooling system comprised 25 mm ID pipes forming twelve separate circuits that fed 7°C water from a single chiller unit. The cooling system reduced the peak temperature in the plug to approximately 30°C and the associated risk of early-cracking. The time before contact grouting could commence was shortened to less than two weeks from casting.

Current best management practice requires the placement of a cover onto most types of mine waste including tailings, waste rock and/or spent heap leach rock at closure of the mine. The objectives of a cover system may vary from site to site but generally include dust and erosion control; chemical stabilisation of acid-forming mine waste (through control of oxygen ingress) contaminant release control (through control of infiltration); and/or provision of a growth medium for establishment of sustainable vegetation. In our experience, there has been a general tendency by stakeholders to develop performance criteria for cover systems, which are tied directly to these specific design objectives. In many cases, this practice has led to the development of single, often very conservative, numerical values of cover performance criteria such as ænet percolationÆ, ærate of oxygen ingressÆ and/or æplant density/mixtureÆ. In our opinion, there is a need to develop cover performance criteria on a case-by-case basis and with due consideration of the short-term and long-term impacts on the receiving environment at a particular site. This paper puts forward a methodology for developing site-specific performance criteria for a cover system designed to isolate acid-forming mine waste and to control acid rock drainage. The proposed methodology links the predicted performance of a cover system to groundwater and surface water impacts. This way, the appropriate level of control (of oxygen ingress and/or net percolation) required by the cover system can be determined. A case study is presented that illustrates the application of the methodology proposed in this paper.

Copper-Cobalt hydrometallurgy has seen a resurgence in recent years with the development of projects in Zambia and the DRC. Many of the flow sheets are unique in their use of hydrometallurgical techniques to improve performance compared to the older types in current use. The emphasis has moved from direct copper electrowinning/stripping, with multiple stages of precipitation for removal of impurities and concentration of cobalt, to innovative use of solvent extraction and ion exchange with higher cobalt recoveries to final product. The poor quality direct electro-won copper has been supplanted with solvent extraction-electrowinning; with consequent production of LME 'A' quality metal. Many of the precipitation steps in cobalt recovery and concentration, have been replaced with solvent extraction; while the remaining precipitation stages have been enhanced with use of oxidants to improve impurity removal. Operating experience from two of these circuits has shown the benefits of the new technologies and the improved overall recovery of both copper and cobalt into higher quality products.

At Cliffs Natural Resources Ltd (CNR) crushing and shipping sample stations, precisions are estimated for the sampling, preparation and measurement stages of iron ore sampling in accordance with ISO 3085 (2002). In this Standard, gross duplicate samples are prepared at each of the three stages, yielding eight measurement assays. Appropriate calculations of the differences between assay pairs are then made to estimate precision of each stage of sampling. The International Standard for checking precision in iron ore sampling, ISO 3085 (2002) prescribes a method for identifying outliers that is ambiguous and possibly inappropriate. The procedure also makes an unnecessary implicit assumption, that the differences between assay pairs are normally distributed. The Anderson-Darling statistic is used to demonstrate that in some cases the assay pair differences have distributions significantly different from normal. When applied at CNR as specified, the Standard leads to precision estimates well below the expected values, thus overestimating the sampling method's capability and limiting the opportunity for real process improvement. This paper suggests an improved method of estimating sampling, preparation and measurement precision. A bootstrap procedure is used to estimate confidence limits for the calculated precision estimates. The proposed method would be suitable for testing blasthole precision. The discussion is supported by extensive simulation modelling of realistic data.
