It is easy to demonstrate the importance of aggregates in any conversation about infrastructure and other engineering artefacts. Peoples around the world have made use of stone to enrich and enhance their lives since the earliest days of civilisation. In New Zealand, Maori used hard durable rocks for weapons, tools, and basic structures. European settlement accelerated the use of quarried materials and formed the basis for development of our society as we see it today. Logic might suggest that the quarrying sector would be recognised positively for, and encouraged to continue to contribute to, this underpinning of the way we are. The reality is æNot In Most Back YardsÆ. Why? The rock is where it's always been (often overlooked) and our æsocialÆ environment is today's hard place. For a resource-based business in New Zealand, that environment is principally the Resource Management Act, with the widespread power it has distributed to anyone prepared to invest their time. This coupled with a lack of leadership and direction in the implementation of the Act has created a climate that stifles development and diverts energy and resources to æplaying the gameÆ rather than ælifting the gameÆ. Perhaps the real costs of this are not yet widely recognised. The paper will draw mainly on the experience of endeavouring to consent a ægreenfieldÆ quarry in the Waikato region. This is supported by commentary based on nearly 10 years of ælivingÆ with the RMA at sites across much of New Zealand. RMA Scorecard Summary: Effects based? Rarely. Level playing field? No. Maori Consultation? Could do better. Efficient use of resources? No. Timely? No. Is it working for other sectors? Certainly not the quarrying industry's customers and end users.

The contract initially involved specialty mechanical, electrical and instrumentation maintenance and has developed to encompass maintenance planning and plant control systems.The integrated partnership has delivered excellent results in the areas of improved availability, reliability and return on investment. The operation is now amongst the industry leaders in plant availability.The integrated maintenance service has delivered: An increase in plant availability from 93%, in the first year, to 96.5% today, generating approximately $50 million additional income per year, Quality work procedures, Process and equipment improvements, Major shutdown planning involving more than 700 personnel, 6000 parts and over 2 000 discrete activities.The ongoing success of the partnership requires a high level of understanding between both companies. A commitment to maintain a long term sustainable relationship, based on a ""win - win"" culture, is the key to this success. Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades.Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue Rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill.Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times.This paper explores the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process, and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. The development of research activities at Risdon and the implementing of a policy of instrumentation in plant processes have, in recent years, entailed a considerable increase in research staff and created an urgent need for more space and modern laboratory facilities. The existing laboratories have been in use for 25 years and are now inadequate. New buildings have been authorized.The new buildings will comprise, firstly, a laboratory building of three floors giving a totai .floor space of approximately 11,000 sq.ft., and a pilot plant building as an annexe to the laboratory building, of approximately 4,900 sq.ft. The laboratory building will accommodate from 20 to 22 research workers, and additional plant operatives will be used for the control of processes in the pilot plant building. The new buildings are designed to provide facilities for three principal functions; the investigation and improvementof existing processes, the development of new processes up to the pilot plant stage, and the control and maintenance of instruments.LOCALITY AND ORIENTATION OF BUILDINGSThe site of the buildings is elevated ground on the eastern side of the main plant, near the main entrance and general office building. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The formation of orogenic gold deposits is commonly a two-stage process. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. In iron ore sintering, packing the granules onto the sintering strand to form a porous bed with optimum permeability is a complex dynamic process. The packed bed voidage is the key factor determining the flame front speed and the final sinter productivity and quality. Previous studies have found that granules are soft quasi-particles with a typical structure of nuclei with an adhering fines layer. The deformation of the adhering layer greatly affects the bed voidage during packing, which is related to the strength of the adhering layer and the force exerted on the granules. In this study, tablets simulating the particle size distribution in the adhering layer of granules were made for four single ore blends. Both the tensile strength and shear strength properties of these tablets were investigated as a function of water content by the uniaxial compression test and direct shear test respectively. The results of compression tests show that the adhering layer becomes weaker and more compliant with the increase of moisture. The most porous ore has a more rigid adhering layer than the other three tested iron ores at any given moisture content. In direct shear tests, the internal friction angle of the adhering layer ranged from 31° to 37° and varied little with the moisture content or ore type. The cohesion constant is around 1 kPa and is quite small compared to the stress applied to the granules during packing. Combined with the results of granulation and packing experiments, the influence of the adhering fines layer deformation on the degree of voidage loss is specifically discussed.CITATION:Zhou, M, Zhou, H and Honeyands, T, 2017. Two types of low-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation may be recognised in volcanic terranes. Chalcedonic Silica- Adularia-Illite type mineralisation is most common in rhyolitic terranes, whereas Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia- Kaolinite) type mineralisation is more typically formed in andesitic terranes. A third type of epithermal mineralisation, the high sulphidation or Vuggy Silica-Alunite- Kaolinite-Illite type, is also common in andesitic terranes. Episodic violent boiling, accompanying hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions, characteristic of geothermal systems in rhyolitic terranes, is stressed for the formation of Chalcedonic Silica mineralisation. Such boiling of deeply circulating meteoric groundwater, with some magmatic fluid contribution, provides chalcedonic veining, episodic banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S from the fluid to cause major gold deposition. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably caused by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwater with ascending deep geothermal fluids beneath andesitic strato- volcanoes. The cooling effect, oxidation, and increased acidity, overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of metals. Extensive formation of base-metal sulphides further enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling is restricted to local structural dilation sites, potentially producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

The maximum current density at which conventional copper electrowinning plants will result in satisfactory, adherent, and dendrite·free cathodes is determined by the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. A decrease in the value of that thickness will permit an increase in the current density. This fact is utilized to develop a high current density cell in which the reduction of the boundary layer thickness is accomplished by means of a specially designed electrolyte circulation system. The high current density cell is used to determine the effect of current density on such process parameters as current efficiency, cell voltage, power consumption, and cathode purity. A number of empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the magnitude of these effects.

THE Australian States and New Zealand have for many years provided instruction in mining, metallurgy, geology, and their allied subjects through their Universities and Schools of Mines. Though such education has been provided at considerable expenditure, there is no legal recognition whatever given to the holders of degrees, diplomas, or certificates granted by the authorities controlling these educational institutions. Certain of the, Australian States and New Zealand require, however, that mine managers and other officials employed by the mining industry shall 'hold' certificates granted by their respective Mines Departments.The position at present is that each educational institution is practically a law unto itself, and therefore in many ways there is a want of uniformity amongst institutions all aiming at the same result the training of mining men. THE township of Costerfield is situated in the parish of Costerfield, county of Dalhousie, and lies 6 miles east of Heathcote and 30 miles south-east of Bendigo. It is separated from Heathcote by the Mt. Ida Range, which forms the western boundary of the Silurian formation. It is situated at the head-waters of Tin-pot Creek, a small southerly tributary of the Deegay Ponds Creek, which flows east to the Goulburn River.The field was discovered in 1860 by two prospectors, Coster and Field, who were guided there by a shepherd, M Nicol Coster and Field had already discovered an antimony lode about three miles nearer Heathcote, when M Nicol offered to guide them to the larger outcrop. The main Costerfield reef at that time projected above the surface, and was white through oxidation, though the bluey sulphide showed on fracture. No alluvial gold of any consequence was obtained at Costerfield, but a little was obtained, at Redcastle, 7 miles to the north, and in some of the gullies to the east.Following its discovery there came a period of prosperity to Costerfield, while the mining operations were confined to the oxidized zone. The early success of mining at Costerfield was due to the gold values, and it is probable that the oxidized zone was secondarily enriched. The earliest available record of values is a crushing of Coster and Co. on the Antimony reef (now known as the Costerfield reef), when 200 tons from a depth of 70 ft. averaged 4 oz. per ton in July, 1861. At this time a crushing mill had not yet been erected at Costerfield, and the ore was carted and treated at Redcastle. The massive antimony ore, consisting of mixed oxides and sulphides, was separated by hand-picking as "marketable ore," and the remainder crushed for gold. This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

The concentration of Mt. Morgan sulphide ore has always been attended by serious loss of gold. Until recently, with a simple selective flotation flowsheet, even the lowest grade of ore milled-about 2 dwt. per long ton-thislloss was 0·9 dwt., whilst for average to high-grade ore, 3·5 to 5 dwt., the figure was 1·5 to 2·0 dwt. Early in 1937 it was decided to equip the research laboratory for an investigation into the condition and location of the escaping gold and the physical and mineralogical barriers preventing its recovery.With the completion of: this equipment in July 1937, trial and error testing, which had been explored to exhaustion, was abandoned and a five months' research programme mapped out and commenced. Based on the knowledge so gained, a flowsheet combining primary desliming, bulk flotation of the natural slime, selective flotation of the deslimed fraction, and cyanidation of the selective flotation tailing was drafted and tried with encouraging results in a 70-lb. per hour pilot plant. This flowsheet, modified to meet current circumstances, is being dove-tailed into the existing 1,500-ton sulphide ore concentrator, though the cyanidation treatment is actually carried out in the oxidized ore mill, to which the flotation tails are pumped.RESEARCH EQUIPMENT(1) Five tube elutriator (Fig. 1) t built in the company's workshop.

As environmental costs incurred by the mining industry become increasingly subject to critical analysis, new technology is necessary to ensure the further development of good relationships between the industry and community. Phytoremediation and phytomining are technologies that have the potential to capture the imagination and approval of the public. Phytoremediation , the in situ use of plants to extract heavy metals from a contaminated substrate, could offer an environmentally and cost-friendly alternative to traditional remediation techniques. Phytomining is the in situ removal of metals from a contaminated site or subeconomic orebody with the additional aim of recovering from the plant an economic amount of metal. Plants used in such operations, hyperaccumulators, accumulate large quantities of one or more target metals in their above-ground herbage. Upon harvesting and incineration, this plant material yields a low-volume, sulphide-free æbio-oreÆ, which can either be safely disposed of, or if the metal is of sufficient value, smelted. Investigations into the economics of phytomining nickel from ultramafic (serpentine) soils, showed that Alyssum bertolonii and Berkheya coddii could remove over 100 kg of nickel per hectare per annum from land with nickel concentrations well below the cut-off grade for conventional mining. It also appears possible to æinduceÆ the hyperaccumulation of gold into plants growing on gold tailings, or on stockpiled, low-grade gold ore. The plants used for phytoremediation and phytomining are useful colonisers as they are necessarily hardy and withstand extremes of salinity, metal toxicity and water stress that hinder the success of current revegetation procedures. As part of a rehabilitation operation, these plants may alter the geochemistry of a substrate making it more amenable to the growth of native species that should be used to restore a mining site to pre-operating conditions.

The state-of-the-art in cave seismic monitoring is reviewed, with the latest developments in active seismic monitoring included. Seismic monitoring systems are routinely used by most of the world’s block and panel caving mines to track the cave initiation and progression. The current best practice is to use the cloud of seismic event locations as a proxy for cave growth somewhere below. Problems with event location reliability due to seismic ray bending around the (unknown) cave are side-stepped by using sensors installed above the cave. However, the aseismic gap – the (unknown) distance between actual cave back and seismic event cloud – currently hinders reliable estimation of cave geometry.Velocity inversions using the passive seismic data are inexpensive and should be undertaken more routinely. The straight-ray methods should be used with caution, as the underlying assumptions are invalid in caving environments. The double-difference method is more correct for the caving situation, and there have been some promising results published. Constrained geometric inversions make a lot of sense, but have yet to be demonstrated successfully.Two active seismic source have recently been developed for use in the caving environment: a piezoelectric source for ranges up to a few hundred metres and a pneumatically-powered source for ranges up to a kilometre. These sources produce signals on standard mine seismic sensors that can be used to measure seismic velocity variations down to 0.01 per cent resolution. This allows the cave progression to be monitored by measuring tiny changes to seismic velocities as the rock above the cave is fractured and destressed.CITATION:Lynch, R A, 2016. The mineral industry is an important element in the human environment and in varying degrees contributes to the general standard of living throughout most of the world, both by supplying the basic materials required for heavy industry, transportation, construction, scientific equipment, and many labour saving tools and also by its contribution to the international economy.When projecting population growth and per capita resource utilization against a finite amount of nonrenewable mineral resources, it is apparent that at some future time, if the established trend continues, the supply of industrial minerals will progressively become exhausted according to their relative scarcity and world demand.In one way or another all of nature's mineral resources are used in the sel'vice of man. Some of the products of their manufacture are essential to the survival and further development of our civilization, others are luxuries, desirable but not essential. Marine vessels are essential to maintain a flow of resollrces around the world, and as trade increases the size of the fleet will grow and the quantities of metals needed will be greater.The commodities they transport, may be used in an inefficient or extravagant manner causing unnecessary depletion which may adversely affect the activities of future generations. An example that comes readily to mind is fuel oil, the international transport of which uses a vast tanker fleet. When refined, large quantities of motor spirit are used in motor vehicles. The U.S.A. alone uses 70 billion gallons annually in the 90,000,000 automobiles in use.Much of this is used in private cars-of which there is one for every 2'3 people-for transport between home and city. "Mine waste storages including tailings dams and waste rock dumps represent arguably the biggest risk on a mine site from both physical and geochemical viewpoints, related firstly to structural stability and the consequences of failure and secondly from potential on-going seepage or run-off of acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). The risks are most likely to increase during operations and continue through the closure and post-closure phases, with the waste storages likely to be the most difficult features to resolve in the mine closure process. Contaminated water quality from tailings dams and waste rock dumps can require treatment "in perpetuity" at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. The problem is increasing with ever larger mine operations and waste generation volumes. This paper identifies leading practice methodologies in planning and operating mines and process plants to minimise the risks from tailings storages and how this might also affect waste rock management and even the design of mine excavations. These methodologies require a "big-picture" approach to develop an understanding of the overall issues and identify synergies between the different operational areas on a mine site that can reduce overall risk. With a conservative approach and realistic allowance for future costs it is possible to facilitate decisions at the mine planning stage that can reduce risk and save cost over the long term. This is in contrast to the common approach where each operational area is looking to minimise its own costs with a short-term view. Incorrect mine methodologies can be developed by allowing net present value (NPV) accounting methods to trivialise future closure issues.Methodologies discussed include: Integrated Waste Management - Significant structural improvements to tailings dams can be achieved if the structures can be incorporated into the waste rock dumps. Risk of AMD can also be reduced by utilising the tailings and waste rock effectively. This could go even further to consider the placement of wastes to limit mine void environmental issues; Process Optimisation - Water quality and the nature of potential tailings dam structures can be highly influenced by the geo-chemistry of the tailings. This can be modified by processing, where simple changes such as maintaining separate streams of geo-chemically different tailings rather than recombining them or by initiating further processing to remove problematic minerals such as sulphides; Enhancing Geophysical Properties - The geochemical performance of waste repositories can be greatly influenced by the geophysical properties of the stored materials, particularly the air-water characteristics, which are influenced by particle size, density and permeability. The cyclone, or centrifugal separator, ,is firmly established in industry as a low cost separator of solids from gases.While it will also separate fluids of different densities, and solids from liquids, its main use is to remove relatively fine dusts from gases whose pr~erties are generally not greatly different from those of air. This latter phase of operation is the one that will be dealt with here.The duty of such a cyclone separating system is to take in a supply of dusty gas and separate it into its components of dust and clean gas as perfectly as possible for the least consumption of pressure head. Any separation at all causes pressure loss and, in general, the greater the separation, the greater the pressure drop needed to effect it. The percentage of dust in suspension which is separated from the gas-dust mixture is commonly called the collection or separation efficiency. Overall or "true" efficiency must take pressure drop into account and may be considered as proportional to the ratio of the percentage of dust collected to the resultant pressure drop. For any cyclone It will vary with different dusts.Many commercial adaptions of the simple cyclone are made solely on the basis of pressure drop improvement, without taking into account the effect on separation efficiency, probably because the latter is so difficult to assess correctly. It appears unfortunate but true that the majority of such adaptions and patent gadgets fitted to cyclones which decrease pressure drop, do have an adverse effect on separation. In other' words, the true efficiency is seldom increased but often diminished.Without a knowledge of what actually goes on inside a cyclone, it is impossible fully to appreciate the real effect of a modification. Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. This information provides a good basis for making a prognosis for mine planning and a quality prognosis regarding the crude ore for mineral processing.CITATION:Niiranen, K, 2017. Water auditing and water conservation measures are fast becoming the quantitative tools for water balance reporting in the mining and minerals processing sector. Therefore, this paper was written to describe the process of water auditing in a goldmining environment and to contribute towards building an appropriate water management framework for The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for sustainable resource processing (CSRP). The research will assist with the assessment of water balances in mining and hydrometallurgical processes and ongoing probabilistic modelling for Newmont Mining Corporation, its wholly owned gold mines, and its joint venture operation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM). Kalgold or KCGM are the managers of a joint venture project between Barrick Australia (50 per cent) and Newmont Mining Corporation (50 per cent) at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia (WA). Boddington Gold Mine (BGM), Western Australia, will commence operations this year and manage the new goldmine expansion project. BGM is 100 per cent Newmont owned and will operate to continue mining gold and copper from the existing (BGM) site that was decommissioned in 2001.
