This paper summarises the research, development and initial application of a sensing platform that has the potential to monitor subsurface deformations, pore pressure and other variables simultaneously to gain a better understanding of rock mass behaviour. The platform is based on Networked Smart Markers (NSMs) devices, which, with their ability for wireless communication between individual sensors and the possibility of real-time data acquisition and processing, will assist in the development of predictive tools to better assess rock mass behaviour.A good opportunity to implement this technology is in the specific application of transitioning from an open pit mine to an underground caving operation. One of the key elements to maintaining the mining business during such a transition is having a good understanding of the unique geotechnical conditions of mutual influence created during the open pit to underground interaction. The knowledge acquisition will require the implementation of a robust platform for geotechnical monitoring, which could be enhanced by incorporating the NSMs. The integration of sensors within the NSMs would enable the collection of additional data about rock mass behaviour (ie caving propagation and crown pillar fracturing), which could be used to improve the management of mining operations and, specifically, allow the development of reliable predictive tools based on the data collected.CITATION:Widzyk-Capehart, E, Hölck Teuber, C, Fredes, O, Rivero, V, Sanchez, E, Pedemonte, I, Gonzalez, N and Steffen, S, 2016. The need to better understand and develop strategies to improve instantaneous shovel productivity at the Cadia Hill Open Pit Mine (CHM) instigated the development of the æShot to ShovelÆ project. This project has involved the implementation of a drill and blast (D&B) information management system to capture current and future experience. Equally important has been the manual monitoring of shovel productivity and direct use and analysis of high precision GPS and productivity data logged by ModularÆs Dispatch System. The analysis of this type of data was facilitated with the application of GIS based software (ie MapInfo). This has shown to be a powerful medium to display, interpret and assess this type of spatial information on a blast-by-blast basis. Cadia HillÆs well-defined D&B processes supplemented with the application of the above systems are providing a unique capability to assess and better understand the impact of both muckpile conditions and operator proficiency on instantaneous loading productivity. This is facilitating the definition of appropriate optimisation strategies in both drilling and blasting and operator proficiency training. This paper gives a summary of the work conducted in the æShot to ShovelÆ project, describes the engineering tools being implemented and discusses preliminary findings and their practical implications.

The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is a $650 M infrastructure project that will increase the capacity of the sewerage system for Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs while also helping to protect the Merri and Moonee Ponds creeks by significantly reducing the number of sewage overflows that can occur after heavy rainfall. The NSP consists of two stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation, and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned by Yarra Valley Water and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation.Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) was used on both NSP stages, however, since Stage 1’s schedule for installation of GRP was slightly ahead of Stage 2’s, this paper will only focus on Stage 1’s use of GRP.NSP1 involves the construction of 7.9 km of new sewer tunnel ranging in diameter from 1.6 to 2.5 m, five main access shafts at depths of up to 65 m, and connections to the existing sewerage system including several access manholes. Construction began in 2007, and project completion is expected in 2012.The original design for NSP1 specified the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE-) line precast concrete pipes as the final tunnel lining and HDPE-lined reinforced concrete for the access shafts and manholes. During construction, the rising cost of precast concrete pipes and the introduction of an additional GRP pipe supplier in the market justified a review of the tunnel final lining material. The contractor-proposed GRP pipe alternative was accepted for the final tunnel lining based on time and cost savings that were possible without compromising the design intent. After gaining experience with GRP through this design change, Melbourne Water Corporation reviewed and accepted GRP as the final lining for five smaller connection manholes. The use of GRP for the manholes was particularly inventive as the redesign made use of the approved tunnel GRP pipes as both a structural and corrosion-resistant lining.This paper discusses the use of GRP on NSP1; how the change in material, from concrete to GRP, affected the design philosophies assumed during detailed design; and how construction methods were modified to handle the less rigid GRP material. Details on the structural, hydraulic and durability considerations for the design are included, as are details about the time and cost savings and the quality and safety improvements that were achieved during construction.

Three legacy coalbed methane production wells have been converted to injection wells for a one-year carbon dioxide (CO2) injection test to evaluate the potential for CO2 storage in the coal reservoir and the potential for enhanced gas production at offset wells. The injection reservoir is composed of 15–20 individual coal seams with an average thickness of 30 cm (1.0 ft), spanning a depth range of approximately 240 (800 ft) to 670 m (2200 ft).The monitoring program for this test includes gas and water sampling of the three injection wells, three dedicated monitoring wells and approximately 20 offset production wells. Key technologies used for monitoring the study area include time-lapse GPS and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) acquisitions for surface deformation measurement, a 28-station buried passive microseismic monitoring array, real-time downhole pressure and temperature sensing and perfluorocarbon tracer fluids, which will be injected with the CO2 stream. The schedule for the monitoring program includes pre- (baseline), during- and post-injection data collection. This schedule will allow data to be analysed for time-lapse changes and trends, which are important for understanding the migration of gas and fluid phases in the reservoir – including CO2, methane, other hydrocarbons and water – and for observing the changing distributions of reservoir pressures and stresses.The results of the monitoring efforts for this study have implications for monitoring mining operations. The combined use of GPS and InSAR geospatial data to evaluate elevation changes across and beyond the study area may prove to be an accurate option for measuring surface deformation, including mining-induced subsidence, in unstable terrain. Long-term microseismic monitoring using high-sensitivity instruments has several applications in mining operations, including rock stability monitoring, production monitoring and miner location detection during emergencies. The Mount Isa copper deposit is located adjacent to the city of Mount Isa, Queensland, and lies within a series of Palaeoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic Superbasins. The deposit is hosted almost entirely within the Urquhart Shale (US), a unit of the Mount Isa Group sediments and part of the Isa Superbasin. The copper mineralisation is separated into two distinct orebodies: the X41 mine (1100 and 1900 orebodies) and the Enterprise mine (3000 and 3500 orebodies). The orebodies are situated in the hanging wall of the major controlling structures, the Paroo Fault, which has juxtaposed older basement Eastern Creek Volcanics against the younger Mount Isa Group sediments cf 1655 ± 4 Ma. Conjecture remains over the exact timing of this thrust event. However, it is clear that inflections on the Paroo Fault have a close association with the orebodies and are an important structural feature in the mineralisation of the Mount Isa copper deposit.The life-of-mine is reducing steadily and new geomechanical modelling techniques were employed to target structurally controlled mineralised zones in three dimensions. Following a structural review of the mine using underground mapping, structural data and core shed observations, a conceptual 3D mine model was constructed utilising existing data modelled in MineSight®. This conceptual model included all the main lithological units and structures. The conceptual model aimed to test the effects of deformation on the main lithological and structural components of the system and attempted to highlight areas of anomalous stress and strain that may indicate a higher likelihood of fluid focusing and mineralisation potential. This project was focused on testing the latter stages of a D3 event (NE–SW compression) and D4 event (SE–NW compression), which are considered to be responsible for the current location of the mineralisation.The fully coupled 3D finite element analysis models resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two deformation events. The NE–SW D3 simulation provided the best correlation with the known distribution of mineralisation. This event also indicated several areas on the Paroo Fault and within the US that have potential to host further areas of mineralisation. The SE–NW D4 simulation provided less of a correlation with known mineralised zones. However, this event may have been responsible for post mineralisation re-mobilisation of copper on a relatively small scale. Areas of maximum shear strain, shear stress, volumetric strain and fluid flow correlated well with areas of minimum principal stress and provided the best overall match with known mineralised zones. Furthermore, several additional highlighted areas provide a high potential for further discovery of copper mineralisation. Waihi Gold Mining Co Ltd [WGM], operated by Normandy Mining, has been internationally recognised for its achievements in environmental management at the Martha Mine at Waihi. In a proactive approach to dealing with community concerns regarding blast vibrations on the North Wall cutback, trials were performed using the Cardox System [Cardox], to determine feasibility of achieving economic fragmentation of andesite overburden whilst bettering management levels of 5 mm/s peak particle velocity. Cardox is a non-explosive pressure breaking system which uses high pressure CO2, Results against conventional Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil [ANFO] using a variety of delays showed that conventional blasting techniques could produce marginal fragmentation within the management levels with occasional excursions, whereas Cardox produced the required fragmentation while not registering on the vibration monitoring equipment. Fragmentation to enable normal excavation by a Hitachi EXII00 hydraulic excavator was achieved with a yield of 16m3 per round. The trails indicated that fragmentation with Cardox at the yields required of over 18m3 per round was possible with further product development. The trial demonstrated that non-explosive pressure breaking is feasible and its application warranted where environmental concerns affect the cost-benefit economics of production blasting in sensitive areas.

The Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) processing plant was designed for 35Mt/y with ball mills expected to deliver a combined new mill feed rate of 4837 tonnes/hr. Since beginning commercial production in late 2009, the plant has steadily increased throughput to meet design capacity in 2014 and reached 37 Mt/y in 2015. Through improved efficiencies, changes to the milling circuit have taken place since commissioning to take the plant beyond its design to an actual throughput of 39.0 Mt in 2017 and a budgeted throughput of 39.4 Mt/y this year.The NBG milling circuit has four parallel ball mills, each consisting of a 7.9 x 13.4 m ball mill with twin 7.5 MW fixed speed motors in closed circuit with twelve 650 mm cyclones. Each mill is fed by two wet screens with the undersize gravitating to a mill discharge hopper where it is combined with the ball mill discharge and pumped to hydrocyclones for classification. The cyclone underflow is re-ground to a target P80 of 150 µm.This paper will focus on process improvements made to the NBG milling circuit which include cyclone reconfiguration, fine screen panel redesign, implementation of an expert control system, mill power draw increase and grinding media changes to take NBG beyond its design throughput.CITATION:McCamley, C, Petrucci, P and Blay, K, 2018. To date, Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL) has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in AMIRA International LimitedÆs (the mineral industries research association) AMIRA P9 project, to develop models for several Anglo Base Metals flotation plants. Further detailed analysis of the data which was generated has realised additional benefits: the various hydrodynamic measurements were useful in comparing cell operating parameters to literature sources, while the laboratory batch tests give an indication of plant recovery potential. A detailed cell by cell mass balance, which is a critical feature of the modelling process, is in its own right a valuable diagnostic tool. Several examples of how this can be used to highlight potential improvement areas in the plants are presented. The added understanding gained from sampling each cell is clear and this is shown to more than compensate for any necessary modifications needed to allow sampling to take place. The model fitting process generates an ore floatability distribution, which is used in the JK SimFloat simulation package to assess the effect of possible changes to each of the circuits. An example of an actual circuit change as a result of this approach is presented. The current limitations of and the potential improvements to the modelling process are also briefly discussed. Future models will be extended to include enhanced size and mineralogical information where the basic models suggest this has potential to improve understanding.

The success of a mining operation depends on the quality of data used in decision-making processes and the people involved in making operational decisions. At Olympic Dam, mine geologists form an integral part of the teams that make decisions at various key points in the mine operational value chain. Mine geologists are directly and indirectly involved in all stages of the mining process, namely, orebody definition and categorisation, mine design and planning, metallurgical processing, and reconciliation.Due to the sheer size and complexity of the Olympic Dam deposit, each mining stage has been divided into smaller units within which decisions are made in line with the overall mine operational plan. In each of these units, the decisions and inputs made by mine geologists has ensured that consideration of geological factors is made in the mining process. Over time, the mine geology team has demonstrated a systematic approach in the development and improvement of their processes in line with the mine’s operational needs, such as understanding the in-stope ore variability and maintaining a consistent ore feed to the plant. An understanding and interpretation of the mineralisation distribution, based on acquired data, has proven to be important in the definition of resource modelling parameters. These parameters in turn affect the quality of grade estimates and their downstream use in planning, production and subsequent reconciliation processes. The continual study of the geology of the deposit, and unravelling its complexity through research has been crucial to the metals extraction process. The involvement of mine geologists through each of the mine value processes places Olympic Dam in a favourable position to benefit from future opportunities that will take advantage of the increasing operational demands and production pressures, and the ever changing economic conditions.This paper reviews the role mine geologists play in the realisation of the Olympic Dam deposit, from ore to product, through their interaction and collaboration with other departments and stakeholders. Viscosity of multicomponent slags is one of the crucial physicochemical properties for many industrial processes and technologies. While the viscosity-temperature relationship of completely molten slags can well be described by an Arrhenian-type law, the compositional dependence of viscosity is still not fully understood, especially in compositional regions with the lack of experimental data (eg at the glass-former concentration of 90 molar per cent or higher). In the present work major compositional relationships of the activation energy of viscous flow have been revised for numerous binary and ternary slag systems on the basis of experimental data collected and stored in the viscosity database OxiVis. For example, it has been found that the activation energy relevant to the polymerisation effect in binary systems of the MO-GFO type, where MO is the modifier oxide (ie monovalent K2O, Na2O, Li2O and bivalent CaO, MgO, BaO, MnO, PbO etc) and GFO is the glass-forming oxide (SiO2 or B2O3) is not always proportional to the third power of XGFO (contrary to the Urbain formalism) and can vary significantly dependent on the slag system. Also, the activation energy of the charge compensation effect has been revised for ternary systems of the AO-MO-GFO and AO-MO type, where AO is the amphoteric oxide (Al2O3, Fe2O3 or other). A simple polynomial model has been proposed on the basis of the carried-out analysis for estimation of viscosities of multicomponent slag systems. The model has been optimised against the experimental viscosities in the selected binary, ternary, and higher-order oxide systems and has been shown reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

A study was undertaken using various methodologies to determine the optimum loading and hauling configuration for different haul routes at Callide Mine, a coal mine located in central Queensland. The study involved development of an effective flat haul model that was used to estimate production rates in truck and shovel circuits that employ two excavators of differing capacities then Queuing Theory to construct a capacity constraint model for scheduling purposes to assist in truck allocation and finally a cost model to determine the most cost effective fleet configuration.The model was calibrated using haul road design and performance data of trucks and excavators currently in use at the mine. The study examined the effects of cycle time for different truck and excavator fleet configurations on production rate and costs.The study found haulage cost was directly related to cycle time while production rate reduced with cycle time. The study indicates the approach taken in combining a cost model with a capacity constraint model offers a simple and effective method of scheduling an optimum number of trucks in a haulage circuit.CITATION:Campbell, S and Hagan, P, 2012. The operations management system at Olympic Dam has evolved over a two-year period to the state described in this paper. This evolution has been driven largely by the requirements of the recent expansion of the Olympic Dam operation from three to nine million tonnes of ore per year. Such a change process demands an holistic approach to mine management and several techniques have been employed including XPAC, Mine Works Planner as well as a basic philosophy of æjust-in-timeÆ completion. The philosophies, software and tracking mechanisms for managing a large tonnage operation are described, outlining a fully integrated scheduling system from shift to shift detailed activity planning to a 20 year production plan. Moreover, the vision of production exceeding the current limit of nine million tonnes means that there are to be further developments to this state-of-the-art system in use at the Olympic Dam mine.

The Goonyella Riverside Mine is located 30 km north of Moranbah in Central Queensland, Australia. Recent mining activities have exposed the north–south striking Kenya and Zimbabwe thrust Faults. These faults vertically offset coal seams by up to 25 m and locally thicken coal packages through imbrication of coal seams. The presence of back-thrusts add to the geotechnical complexity of maintaining highwall stability. The Kenya and Zimbabwe Faults have provided multiple challenges to the mining operation, with an unplanned additional 240 kt of coal tonnes being mined from imbrication of coals seams or from the refinement to local scale geological models. These additional coal tonnes have been either identified during the mining of the coal seam or just prior to overburden removal above the coal seam. These faults can also negatively impacted highwall stability with highwall failures, lowering the overall slope angle for pit designs and increasing stand-off distances for hazardous highwall conditions. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are used to scan exposed highwalls and enable geological mapping via high-quality 3D images. Measure while drill data from drill and blast rigs can provide local-scale intersections of the faults and coal seams. Mine Geologists utilise these and other data sets to create localised geological models refined position of the fault planes and coal seams. These models are utilised by relevant mine site teams to ensure the safe and efficient mining of coal around these faults.

Mining at the Mt Leyshon Gold Mine in semi-arid north Queensland stopped in 2002. Newmont Australia has recently initiated a thorough post-closure water management study of the site by revisiting the existing information and conducting new water-related investigations. The focus of this paper, which is the first publication on post-closure environmental management of the site, is an overview of the site water quality in view of the sources and spatial distribution of polluted mine water, and also the performance of cover systems in controlling water flux though mine wastes. Since the mine closed the rehabilitation of waste rock dumps and tailings dams have significantly improved water quality in the surface receiving waters. However, the Scats Stockpile, the Heap Leach and Old Plant areas, which can potentially produce acidic waters, enriched with heavy metals and arsenic, are the top management priority. Modelling of the potential transport of contaminants in groundwater needs further investigations. A detailed examination of the waters in seepage sumps showed high concentrations of manganese, cobalt, nickel and selenium, which were previously overlooked. The study also showed distinctive chemical signatures for waters at different locations: the waters draining from scats, supergene materials and waste rocks have distinctly lower pH and higher concentrations of dissolved iron, sulfate, heavy metals, Mg, Mn, U, Se and As. While, the tailings sumps are more alkaline, and are enriched in Na and Cl. The southern tailing sump is characteristically As rich. The waters draining from the supergene materials have higher Cu concentrations. Assessment of the cover monitoring systems showed that although covers pass the design criteria, automated recording of data may ignore any failure of the monitoring system. Recalibration of the moisture sensors not only showed realistic moisture values compared to rainfall data but also showed that the permanently installed system records values that are higher than those of the mobile system. Event-driven recording of data overlooks infiltration events. Besides, with a higher time resolution (daily measurements) the breakthroughs could be clearly detected. Modelling of the water balance in covers is underway and an example is given here. Newmont is currently reviewing water management options and is willing to share the lessons learned.

Resue or split face firing has the potential to separate ore and waste rock into separate muck piles within a stope. Thus split face firing has the potential to reduce dilution of the ore stream to be transported to the surface for subsequent processing. It also potentially reduces the total amount of broken rock needing to be transported out of the mine as the waste material is physically separated from the ore as part of the blasting process. Waste can therefore be used directly from the stope to backfi ll other mining areas. This paper reports on the results of split face firing trials at the Hillgrove mine in NSW and analyses the results of these blasts.

The recently opened Hera Au-Pb-Zn-Ag mine in central New South Wales has provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the calculation of sulfide ore mineralogy using normative methods. Normative mineralogy applies a set of sequential rules based on the species likely to be present to assign the chemical components of a sample to their respective mineral components. The dominant sulfide mineral assemblage present at Hera is galena, iron-bearing sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. A normative technique for estimating the relative abundance of each of these species from drill hole, grade control and metallurgical assay data sets has been developed. This includes a process for deriving a gangue iron value and differentiating pyrrhotite from pyrite using sulfur/iron ratios. A calculated total sulfide volume value has been utilised at the mine to improve interpretation of lode boundaries. Normative drill hole values have also been used for domaining within the orebody, with large scale mineralogical trends evident. Dry bulk density (BD) values calculated using a normative species-weighted method show good correlation with measured BD values (R2 = 0.895) and are a significant improvement on the Pb+Zn+Cu regression method (R2 = 0.646) previously used. Application of these calculations to identify errors in assay databases is demonstrated, with specific reference to the data set for the nearby Nymagee copper deposit. Validation of block model grades is also explored and a method to improve resource estimates using direct normative mineral interpolation is proposed. The integration of the normative data into the production and metallurgical data sets at Hera is described and the relationship of the normative minerals to other economic elements such as gold and silver is discussed.CITATION:McKinnon, A R, 2017. As Pliny commented two millennia ago, The only certainty is that nothing is certain. Despite the many breakthroughs, advances and promises, the way we each live and work remains awash with technological, economic and political uncertainty. The resources sector is no exception in this regard. Mining itself is much more than a complicated process or recipe; it is a complex adaptive system. The way we adopt and adapt new technologies, the way we evolve data into corporate wisdom, the way we make decisions and even the way we view our concept of rationality should each be the subject of intense review. Translating these sentiments into sustainable company growth is indeed the challenge. This is unlikely to be achieved within convention, but through innovation. The game is changing!

The paper outlines the 17 Mt/a Telfer Project plant process design from sample selection to feasibility study design. The 366 Mt Telfer mine reserve consists of a diverse range of copper and gold mineralisation, from massive sulfide reef ores to stockwork ore, oxide copper minerals to chalcopyrite, siltstone to competent quartzite, all with relatively high levels of gravity recoverable gold. The complexity of the orebody demanded a flexible plant that could recover copper and gold values by a combination of gravity recovery, flotation and concentrate leaching. The demands of treating ore from a high grade underground mine and a variable grade open pit (that includes underground old mine workings) necessitated a dual train approach from primary crushing to concentrate production in order to minimise the requirement for campaigning of different ore types. An extensive sampling, testwork and technical evaluation program was undertaken to identify processing characteristics and the optimum process route for each ore type. The design experience included: the development of robust primary stockpiling and pebble crushing concepts; detailed review of scale-up of SAG and ball mill pilot plant data to plant scale; the selection of two 15 MW SAG mills and two 13 MW ball mills for the grinding circuit; and detailed modelling of the pyrite concentrate carbon-in-leach (CIL)/sulfidisation acidification recovery thickening (SART)/acidification volatilisation recovery (AVR) process to optimise design for copper and cyanide recovery from leach liquors. The Telfer plant design also measures the development of process design based on experiences at the Cadia Hill Cu/Au concentrator, commissioned in 1998. The differences between the two plants are compared and contrasted.

In the last 40 years, New Zealand has developed a number of liquid- dominated geothermal steam fields, for electricity generation and indus- trial process steam. New technologies were developed, and in this work, New Zealand led the world. The policy of full publication of the results, in a wide range of sciences, provided a reservoir of detailed data defin- ing the geology, size and shape, and the chemical and physical regime, of many geothermal fields and their constituent parts. The discovery of precious and base metal deposits /precipitates in geothermal drill cores and steamfield equipment, suggested a clear link- age with epithermal mineral fields in general, and with that of the Coromandel (Hauraki) Region in particular. Further work on geothermal/ epithermal relationships have implied that the techniques, developed to obtain an understanding of geothermal fields, could be applied also to epithermal mineral exploration. This work is developing fast, and is now proceeding in many coun- tries. Future work may show that the presumed relationship between geothermal and epithermal deposits may be applicable in the wider con- texts of all hydrothermal deposits, and possibly in many other minera- lised areas with volcanic "country rocks".

Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.
