Recent work on borate deposits near Kramer in the extreme southeast corner of Kern County, California, is of special interest because of the information it seems to give concerning the mode of origin of the borate minerals colemanite and ulexite, especially when considered in conjunction with the valuable clue to the mode of origin of colemanite in its present known deposits given in a paper by W. F. Foshag,1 of the United States National Museum. Colemanite is found in or near original deposits of ulexite, from which it is supposed to have been derived by a change in the character of the ground water or rate of its movement or both. Indications that an alteration of this sort had produced colemanite were first recognized by the writer2 in specimens collected in the Kramer district in 1920, and sent to W. T. Schaller, at U. S. Geological Survey, for identification. The identity of the two borate minerals in these specimens was suspected when collected but not at once determined, but the relations of the minerals as seen in the specimens seemed to afford a manifest clue to the origin of the deposits. Similar specimens were obtained by the writer from deposits in Death Valley soon after he had examined the deposits near Kramer. After studying the specimens submitted to him Dr. Schaller wrote as follows: " I have finally positively identified the boron minerals you sent me with your letter of Sept. 27. The 'white fibrous mineral like ulexite, is ulexite; the 'harder nodules' in the clay are colemanite, apparently formed from the ulexite as a result of leaching, with recrystallization in place—a theory that Foshag is working on." The present paper is a report on the facts observed at the depo its near Kramer, and some general observations on the geological relations noted, which, unfortunately, still form only a very incomplete record. DETAILED knowledge of purchase specifications established by coal consumers is essential to the successful design and operation of a coal-preparation plant. ANTHRACITE Specifications should be considered by both the consumer and the producer as guide posts outlining a certain path for both to follow. Plants differ, therefore specifications must differ to meet the varied requirements. Specifications are not of themselves a "cure all" or an assurance of complete satisfaction in fuel utilization. Specifications should not be regarded as a license to engage in an orgy of buying any and all coals that may happen to fall within their limits. This would lead to the-indiscriminate mixing of coals which may vary in their burning characteristics. Different coals of equal grade tend to be individualistic in their burning characteristics. Rather, specifications should be used to help simplify coal selection, to reduce the actual number of coals used over a given period; in other words, to have a stabilizing influence on coal or customer turnover. In the final analysis, the use of too many coals per year in a plant is costly to both the consumer and the producer. Too many sources usually result in higher operating and maintenance costs for the consumer and higher sales costs for the producer. Finally, the statement included in the report accompanying the comprehensive Coal Selection Charts prepared by the Coal Committee of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, and released in 1938, is significant. This Committee worked diligently for a period of 15 years seeking to find a scientific and reliable method for selecting coals. The two following paragraphs are quoted from its report: More important is the fact that no ready-made classification or set of specifications can possibly replace the judgment and resourcefulness of an experienced combustion engineer, or fuel technologist, nor the usual need for full scale plant tests under the exact conditions of use before a final decision is made . . .

Estimates indicate a life of known Lake Superior iron ore reserves of 20 to 30 years. Although some believe the future ore supply will come from foreign sources and will be brought to interior points via the projected Great Lakes-St. Lawrence waterway, and others fear a displacement of the interior steel-producing districts to the Atlantic seaboard, the author has faith that American engineering skill will make possible the use of lean ores from the Lake Superior district. Three general types of Lake Superior ores and ore formations, that represent possible reserves and require beneficiation, are: (1) the wash ores of the western Mesabi range, (2) the partly leached hematitic formations, and (3) the oxidized but largely unleached iron formations. The total tonnage represented by (1) and (2) is not large, but the recovery of iron from present washery tailings would bring on the market the equivalent of nearly one million tons of wash ore, annually. Group 3 comprises the magnetic iron formation of the eastern Mesabi range, the hematitic formations including the taconites of the Mesabi range, and the iron formations of all the other ranges. These formations represent our future supply of iron ore. Their treatment requires intensive research because the bulk of the iron oxide and silica minerals exist in a finely disseminated condition. The possibilities of the adaptation of tables, oil flotation, and other processes warrant extensive study. Cheaper method of agglomeration of the concentrate is essential. Recent developments in better preparation and sizing of blast-furnace charges indicate that substitution of agglomerated ore for fines will increase furnace efficiency and output. If agglomerated beneficiated ore can be shown to rate a per-unit premium for iron contents over the base rate or a premium for structure, the payment of these would greatly assist in enlarging our iron ore supply. Since present methods of taxation of ore reserves, which encourage the rapid depletion of rich ores, will result in using up our rich ores and later on putting domestic producers at a disadvantage in competing with' foreign producers, it would seem highly provident to conserve our rich ores and to increase the use of beneficiated ores as soon as possible.

IN any line of human activity logical handling requires an amount of attention to each phase that is in keeping with the importance of that phase. In the complex and rapidly changing field of modern ferrous metallurgy it is difficult to allot the proper degree of attention to the various subjects, and it is not surprising that one or more subjects of major importance should for a time be neglected. Bessemer steel is a good example of a neglected subject. It is largely taken for granted, inferior physical quality is assumed for it, and there is a lack of interest in its technical development and commercial application. Availability of supply is limited. In spite of this technical indifference, limited source and lack of commercial exploitation, bessemer steel con-stitutes a large volume of tonnage in daily use. There is a fairly prev-alent idea even among technical people that bessemer steel survives mostly because of low cost and by reason of a dwindling residue of applica-tions sufficiently common to permit of its use. The difference in cost between bessemer and open-hearth steel is governed largely by the relative cost of manufacture of pig iron and the market price of steel scrap. During the past four years there have been long periods of time during which the price of steel scrap was low enough so that open-hearth steel was considerably lower in manufacturing cost than bessemer. As to application, it may be pointed out that thousands of tons of this material in the form of bessemer screw steel are applied for moving parts in automotive and other equipment. Some forging work and considerable heat treating, particularly carburizing, is performed on this grade.

Solid-solution titanium-cerium alloys, cold-rolled to 0.010 in. thickness, and annealed, were internally oxidized to produce a fine dispersion of CeO2 in the titanium matrix. The oxidized alloys were cut into sheet stress-rupture specimens and tested for rupture life at 426°C, 538°C, and 648°C. There was noted an improvement in strength over that of pure titanium, the internally-oxidized alloys showing curves with a much flatter slope on the log stress—log rupture life plot, characteristic of the stable metal-metal oxide class of alloy. DURING the past 3 to 4-year period, considerable interest has been aroused by the potential offered by alloys based on the ultra fine dispersion of a hard insoluble phase in pure metals or solid-solution alloys for use at high temperatures. The impetus to the development and study of such alloys was provided by Irmann.1,2 through the success of the SAP alloy (pure aluminum containing about 12-14 volume pct of A12O3). Subsequent studies have thrown light on the true potential of this class of alloys in the remarkable stability of the structure after long-time exposure at high stresses and high temperatures.a-5 While success has been demonstrated in the special case of the A1-Al2O3 alloys, and more recently

The rate of nucleation and the rates of both lateral and longitudinal growth of martensite plates (needles) in b—a transformation were determined as a function of temperature, in various U-Cr alloys. The activation energies for nucleation and both modes of growth were calculated from the experimental results. The identical values for lateral and longitudinal growth clearly indicate that both are controlled by the WHITE,' Mott and Hines and Holdeen3 showed that characteristic martensite plates (needles) appear in U-Cr alloys during the transformation 8 —0 in the lower temperature range (up to -300°C). Holden pointed out that the rate of growth of the individual martensite plates under isothermal conditions is same mechanism. Lomer's suggestion that single-atom movement over subatomic distances controls the specially slow growth of martensite receives further support from the present kinetic study, which shows that the growth rate can be described quantitatively by known formulas for the growth rate in processes involving single-atom movement. very slow, and suggested that this is due to the slowness of the relief of the stresses engendered during the growth of the individual plates. lomer4 attributed the slow growth to the complexity of the atomic adjustment at the growing interface b/(u. In the present work the rates of nucleation and growth of martensite plates in U-Cr alloys were studied by direct observation, in order to elucidate the mechanism which controls their characteristic slow growth.

The general problem of the simultaneous movement of water and oil in a connected sand is of considerable practical interest from two points of view. First, there is the situation usually described as "edge-water encroachment." Here the water in the sands contiguous to and flanking the oil sand begins to enter the latter as the oil is removed and the reservoir pressure declines. The physical questions involved concern an understanding of the mechanism of the advance of the water and its control, so as to aid the oil recovery rather than to hinder it. In so far as the entry of the water into the oil sand means at least the partial replacement of the oil from the region of the encroachment by the advancing water, it is quite appropriate to consider this type of situation as one of natural water-flooding. For the present discussion, however, we are primarily interested in the problem of artificial flooding. Here the water is deliberately injected into the oil sand with the intention of displacing the oil and removing it through prearranged output wells. For the practical development of such a procedure rather large areas are included in the flooding program and the injection and output wells are arranged in regular patterns or networks, which are felt to be most favorable for a high oil recovery. Although remarkable success has already been obtained in such flooding programs, especially in the Bradford field of Pennsylvania, essentially by the application of the lessons of practical engineering experience, a more thorough physical analysis of the problem appeared to offer promise of leading to results of some interest and value. Another phase of the problem, which stimulated both the experimental and mathematical analysis, is that it is susceptible in large measure to empirical field tests. It, is in itself but an example and illustration of the general theory of the flow of dead (gas-free) liquids through porous media, in which the authors have been interested for the last several years. INTRODUCTION The composition of water used in the flotation process has always been of primary interest to the flotation metallurgist. It is by alteration of the chemistry of the water introduced to the process that flotation separation is effected. In only a few cases has it been necessary to treat available water prior to use in the process. In the past, flotation tailings were treated for the removal of solids via the tailings dam and water decanted from the dam was either recirculated to the process or discharged to the surface water system. The choice of recirculation or discharge was based upon water availability, effect of recycle water on the process, and economic considerations. The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 have charged the United States Environmental Protection Agency with establishing effluent limitations from point sources of discharge into the navigable water of the United States. A detailed study, sponsored by EPA, of the water of ore processing plants took place in 1974 and 1975 and guidelines for these plants will presumably have been published by the time this paper has been presented(1). The action of many of the individual states preceded the EPA in this attempt to regulate the quality of the water discharged from industrial point sources. Even with recycle of tailings water, some water is discharged from tailings dams into the substrata and at least one state is currently preparing guidelines for the quality of water discharged into the substrata.

What the evidence prevails upon the mind to believe, depends upon the mind as well as upon the evidence. M. L. IN a recent discussion of the mineral resource position of the United States, published in the September 1946 issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, I expressed my conviction that ore deposits of major magnitude remain to be found in this country and that they can be found without undue cost or risk. I stated with equally strong conviction, however, that if the search for such deposits is to be notably successful there must be, among other things, a reorientation of philosophy and mental habits on the part of many who would be connected with the search. I would now like to enlarge upon that statement. For such a purpose, we may consider that the search for concealed deposits involves four steps: (I) the selection of areas for further study; (2) the geologic study of those areas in order to verify their general favorableness and in order to choose specific patches worthy of being tested; (3) the decision whether exploration of the patches chosen should actually be undertaken; and (4) the exploration itself. The first two steps and the last rest upon the judgment and skill of geologists. The third step-the decision whether exploration should be undertaken-rests upon management. In my opinion, the philosophies or principles that have guided these steps in the past are now inadequate. PHILOSOPHY OF APPRAISAL If concealed deposits are to be looked for, how are the places of their possible concealment to be recognized? Every known mineralized area still in the prospect stage has already been repeatedly examined and condemned. As for those deposits concealed under later rocks, there may be not even the clue of a near-by outcrop for engineer or geologist to consider. How then, are we to know where to look? Geologic Probability In the early days of our mining industry, ore deposits were found mainly by "following the ore." Later, as such opportunities decreased, and as geologic concepts became accepted, deposits were found more and more through use of the notion of geologic probability. Many instances can be cited wherein a courageous operator ignored the implications of the unsuccessful efforts of predecessors and, solely by "following the ore," converted a discredited prospect into a good mine. Similar experience doubtless will occur in the future, but "following the ore" will no longer in itself find new deposits in the amount needed. Nor can enough new ore be expected from further use of the notion of geologic probability, for, as mentioned above, our known prospects `have already been ex-

IN the past quarter century the seismograph has played an increasingly important role in evaluating vibratory effects transmitted to adjacent communities by industrial blasting operations. In this period research has advanced through two major phases—from falling pin seismometers to three-component recording seismographs. The initial phase of this research is now regarded as the era of recording, during which the seismograph merely recorded occasional events. It has emerged from this stage into the era of control and analysis and in this later period has been recognized as a full-fledged industrial tool. Although the falling pin machines of earlier years indicated probable amplitudes of industrial blasting vibrations, they gave no reliable measure of such displacements, nor did they provide essential information concerning direction or frequency of motion. The first contribution of the three-component recording seismograph was the weight-for-distance formula developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This empirical formula enabled users of commercial explosives to determine beforehand the probable vibratory effects of a blast when the weight of the explosives charge and the distance from the shot point were known. This formula has withstood the test of time and is still applicable for blasts detonated by instantaneous methods. The second major contribution of the three-component recording seismograph followed the introduction in 1945 of short period or millisecond delay detonation. This might be described as a two-stage contribution, the first of which revealed a 50 pct reduction in the vibration magnitude when millisecond detonation was used rather than instantaneous discharge. This second part of this double contribution led to the discovery of the vibration dip phenomena, see Fig. 1. In Fig. 1 the horizontal coordinates indicate the displacements amplitude in inches, and the vertical coordinates, the explosive weight in pounds. The top curve is that of the U. S. Bureau of Mines for instantaneous detonation. Its curvature conforms to the two-thirds power of the explosive weight as provided in the weight-for-distance formula; hence the vibratory effects increase in proportion to an increase in the explosive charge. If the other curves shown below are temporarily disregarded, it may be considered that the entire area below this top curve represents both useful and waste energy. As mentioned previously, when millisecond delay detonation was first investigated it was found that in general the U. S. Bureau of Mines curve could be decreased by about 50 pct, or to the position of the middle curve. At the outset it was assumed that this curve would likewise increase in some proportion to the explosive charge, as did the top curve, that is, the curve would indicate a continuous upswing. Maximum furnace efficiency and close control of final steel composition demand that the steel melter be able to follow closely the variations in the carbon content of the bath. For many years, the fracture test has been used by melters for estimating carbon, because it requires only a very short time to pour a sample into a chill mold, cool it in water, break it with a sledge hammer, and observe the fracture. After long experience gained from the observation of such fractures, most melters are able to estimate the carbon content of steel with amazing accuracy, particularly in the lower carbon ranges. Notwithstanding the utility of the fracture test, there has been widespread interest in other methods for rapid carbon determination to supplement it and to ensure against possible errors in human judgment. Several methods, based upon measurement of magnetic properties as functions of carbon content, have been described in the literature1-6 and have been found to give reasonably reliable results in plant practice when scrap composition is known and controlled. A difficulty encountered in the use of analyzers of the magnetic type is that alloying elements do change the relationship between carbon content and magnetic properties and it becomes necessary to establish calibration curves for all the expected combinations of alloy residuals that are not oxidized in the bath. The work reported here is of an investigation of a method that is independent of alloying elements normally present in constructional steels, being based upon the relatively well-known fact that in plain carbon and low-alloy steels martensitic hardness is a function of carbon content alone. Work oF Other Investigators In I938, Burns, Moore and Archer published & curve? that showed that the hardness of martensite is a function of carbon from 0.10 to 0.50 per cent and is independent of grain size or alloy content, at least within the rallge found in construc-tional S.A.E. compositions. Some of the deeper hardening types investigated, however, contained carbon to a maximum of only o.2o per cent. Using this principle, Kern8 developed a method of rapid carbon determination for S.A.E 43xx steels, His procedure consisted of chill-casting a test bar that was large enough to give a a that could be prepared for Brinell indentations. The test piece was quenched immediately after solidi fication was complete and hardness readings were taken, so that the carbon content could he read from an experimentally determined curve giving the relationship between as-quenched hardness and carbon. THIS paper makes no claim to any new idea; it simply reviews the Treasury Department Regulations pertaining to the practical application of depreciation and depletion and other allowances governing taxation of oil and gas properties. Other methods may be existent, but as they may not conform to the legal status they must be discarded. In complying with the present laws governing the, industry with regard to taxation and the allowable deductions therefrom, the following considerations are essential: Depletion, depreciation, amortization, other allowances, and items not deductible. It is definitely understood that depletion is the loss or exhaustion sustained in the continuous operating of an oil and gas property, and that each unit of oil or gas taken out reduces the value of the property until its final exhaustion. Depletion applies only to the natural deposits of oil and gas due to their-removal in the course of exploitation of any property. Depreciation is defined to cover the waste of assets due to exhaustion, wear and tear, and obsolescence of the physical property, and is separate and distinct from depletion; its allowance is that amount which should be set aside for the taxable year in such sums as for the useful life of ,the property will suffice to repay its original cost-or its value as of Mar: 1, 1913, if acquired by the taxpayer before that date-less the salvage value at the end of such useful life. Amortization is allowed for such facilities as were built or acquired on or after Apr. 6, 1917, for the production of articles contributing to the prosecution of the war and, in the case of vessels, those built and acquired after that date. The amount to be extinguished, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value under stable .post-war conditions.

Many of the auriferous placers of the arid Southwest differ widely from the standard types of stream and eluvial deposits of more humid regions, although exhibiting some of the features of each. This divergence in characteristics is of geological and economic importance and appears sufficient to warrant the consideration of these placers as a class distinct from both stream and eluvial deposits. It is hoped that the consideration of these auriferous gravels as a distinct type of deposit will facilitate recognition of morphological and economic features that might remain obscure if these deposits were viewed in the light of stream or eluvial placers whose type locality is a more humid environment. "Bajada placer" is proposed as the designation for this type of placer deposit. Bajada is the Spanish term for slope and is used locally in the Southwest to indicate the lower slope of a mountain range, the portion consisting of rock debris and standing at a much lower angle than the rock slope of the range proper. It has been used in a geologic sense by Schraderl and others. The type locality of bajada placers is the Sonoran Desert,2 where they occur on the bajada or rock debris slope of desert ranges. Stream placers are represented in the Southwest, but most of them lie within the mountain topographic province, the Mexican Highlands2 section of the Basin and Range physiographic province. Eluvial placers may occur in the mountainous semiarid Mexican Highlands but are almost unknown in the extremely arid Sonoran Desert, as mountain slopes are generally too steep to permit the accumulation of any considerable mantle of residual debris. Since their salient distinctions are almost wholly the result of formation under conditions of extreme aridity, bajada placers are largely confined to the Sonoran Desert, although a few occur in the adjacent Mexican Highlands. They may be modified by the action of ephemeral streams, in which case the placer gravels of these arroyos approach stream placers in type and habit of occurrence, but their relation to an arid environment and the bajada type is usually apparent.

Crushed and broken stone is used directly in construction as an aggregate and accounts for about half the value and two-fifths of the quantity of natural aggregates consumed in the United States. Sand and gravel provide most of the balance of aggregates except for some lightweight materials such as pumice and expanded shale. Conditions necessary for production of crushed stone from a deposit are : 1) Quality-should pass rigid specifications for strength and durability. 2) Cost-low average total delivered cost. Construction aggregates are hard, essentially inert materials suitable for being formed into a stable mass either (1) by the addition of cementing or binding materials that produce a concrete or (2) by compaction or by natural weight to produce a road base or foundation. Aggregates usually provide about 80 to 100% of the material volume of the construction masses in which they are used. The construction industry utilizes as aggregates about 70% of all crushed stone produced in the United States according to statistics provided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) , [Table 1], using definitions as shown below. Nonconstruction uses of crushed stone, [Table 2], are included elsewhere in Industrial Minerals and Rocks because such uses require the special physical or chemical characteristics which are discussed in those chapters.

During the summer of 1916, while on a visit to the United States Agricultural Experiment Station at Mayaguez, Porto Rico, the writers were told by D. W. May, the director, that an occurrence of manganese ore had been reported from the mesa southeast of Mayaguez. A visit to the locality showed that the mesa is covered by a mantle of bright red soil resting upon serpentine. Here and there over its surface concretionary masses of limonite have been mashed out of this soil. These were apparently mistaken for manganese ore. On account of the similarity of this occurrence to the extensive iron deposits of northeastern Cuba, it was thought that a brief description based upon a two days&apos;reconnaissance survey of the area mould be of scientific interest. The effect of fluid viscosity on the classification of solids in a liquid-solid cyclone was investigated. Above a critical value, the flow can be predicted by a simple equation, whereas, below this value a variable orifice coefficient must be introduced. INTRODUCTION The solid-liquid cyclone is widely used as a device for classification, thickening, and heavy media separations. The more important variables and how they affect the performance of a cyclone are known and have been the subject of several investigations.&apos; In general, these studies have paid little attention to the viscosity and those which have, introduced it through Stokes settling considerations. Systems which contain appreciable amounts of swelling clays exhibit viscosities much greater than water, and in these systems the viscosity term becomes important in determining the separation size. The work described here was done to determine in a Newtonian system the dependence of separation size on viscosity. BACKGROUND The separation size for a cyclone classifier has been related to the parameters of the cyclone by an equation of the form: where a is probably between 1.3 and 1.5, ß is between 0.50 and 0.57, and 6 has a theoretical value of 0.5. where y has a value between 1.8 and 2.0. Although these relationships are empirical, equations that differ only in the exponents have been derived from theoretical considerations. Those interested in the origin of these equations are referred to some of the original work.6,7 MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The laboratory apparatus used in this study is pictured diagramatically in Fig. 1.
