BlANKS 8 in. long were cut from the as-received bar stock and austenitized at 1560° F for 1 hr, oil quenched, tempered at 1140°F for 1 hr, and water quenched. The heat-treated blanks were machined into tensile specimens which were subsequently used for the straining operation. Some of the tensile specimens were temper embrittled at 900°F for 24 hr and air cooled prior to or following the straining operation. The specimens were strained in tension up to 5 pct total strain (elastic plus plastic) either at room temperature or at 900°F. The reduced sec- tion of the tensile specimen employed was 5 in. long and 0.600 in. in diam. This size specimen was sufficiently large to permit two standard Charpy impact bars to be machined from it. One group of specimens was temper embrittled at 900°F for 24 hr under stress of about 20,000 psi applied with a hydraulic tensile testing machine. Approximately 0.34 pct plastic strain occurred during this treatment. A comparison of series "A" and "B" data in Table I at 0 pct strain, reveals that the steel was rather highly susceptible to temper embrittlement, the embrittling treatment causing the transition temperature to rise 165°F. THIS investigation was started with the idea of determining whether copper-nickel mattes might not have a lower flowing temperature than copper mattes, and thus perhaps aid in accounting for the difficulty so far experienced in attempts at pyritically smelting copper-nickel ores. We have used the term flowing temperature to avoid confusion with the usual melting temperature. The idea at first was that there might be a greater viscosity range in the one matte than in the other. In the early experiments it was in our minds to determine the relative fluidity of the mattes at a given temperature. Looking to this end we tried pouring equal quantities of matte at the same temperature down an inclined graphite slab, and comparing the distances traveled. Results from such experiments were not satisfactory. We next tried pouring equal quantities at the same temperature through a drilled hole in an Acheson graphite crucible, timing the flow with a stop watch, the whole operation being carried out in the muffle. The flowing temperatures of the mattes tried in this way appeared to be about the same, and there was no marked difference in their fluidity when well fused. Oxidation gave some trouble. These experiments finally led to the adoption of the following apparatus which we thought at the time was wholly original with us, but which we have since found was described by W. McA. Johnson.' The tray used was a slab of graphite 8 in. long, 2 in. wide and ¼ in. thick. It had six holes, into each of which sat a cup of Acheson graphite. Centrally in the bottom of each cup was a vertically drilled hole 3/16 in. in diameter and ½ in. long. The mattes to be tested were put into the cups, in a solid piece. In the study of the coals of Illinois now being carried on by the State Geological Survey, an attempt is being made to determine the most satisfactory basis of comparison between different coals. The following discussion is based upon work done for the Survey in the laboratories of the State University and under the general direction of Prof. S. W. Parr. "Pure coal" has been defined by Mr. A. Bementl as ash- and moisture-free coal, and the use of this pure coal" as a basis for comparing different bituminous coals has lately been much discussed among engineers in the middle West. By some the B.t.u. of the pure coal is being used to check calorimetric results, and to calculate the calorific value of different coal-samples from the same seam, for which purposes it is necessary to assume—first, that the composition and calorific value of pure coal from different parts of the same coal-seam are uniform, and, second, that these values remain constant after the coal is mined, both of which assumptions there are reasons to believe are inconsistent with the facts. Certain variables are included in pure coal, as ordinarily defined, and disregard of them may lead to serious error. In any event, where delicate shades of difference are involved, no sure interpretation of results car] be made, unless these variables be eliminated. As a basis of comparison between coals, ash- and moisture-free coal is much to be preferred to " dry coal," and still more is it to be preferred to moist coal," as ordinarily reported in analyses. A LACK of experimental data illustrating the effect of composition, particularly in respect to impurities, on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum-alloy die castings induced the authors and their associates to undertake a limited study of these relations. A number of commercial alloys .and several experimental variations of a commercial alloy were used for the investigation. Mechanical property, growth, steam, paraffin, salt spray and atmospheric exposure tests were employed. This paper deals with the more accelerated tests and the results they have produced. It is concluded that a high-silicon alloy with all impurities except iron strictly limited to small amounts will develop an excellent resistance to corrosion and retain satisfactory mechanical properties and casting characteristics. As a direct result of this investiga-tion an alloy of this character with superior corrosion resistance is now available commercially. In general, copper increases the strength and decreases the elongation and corrosion resistance. Tin reduces the mechanical properties and the resistance to corrosion. Iron reduces the elongation and, if excessively high, may adversely affect the tensile strength. Even excessively high iron contents do not affect the corrosion resistance, which is fortunate for the die caster as it is this element that is the most difficult to control. Nickel and zinc in limited amounts do not seem to affect the properties or corrosion resistance of at least the high-silicon alloy. Growth tests have confirmed the previous common belief that dimensional changes under either dry or wet conditions at 100° C. are too small to be of practical importance.

For years the geographical isolation of the Southern iron-ore district from the great producing centers in the North and East enabled it to meet its conditions and solve its own problems without regard to the practices and policies of other districts, but during the past few years distances have been shortened, practices and wages are being standardized, and these changing conditions have brought new problems to the South. Development of Pig Iron in the South The development of the pig-iron business in the South was very slow during its early years, gained speed rapidly in the latter part of the nineteenth century, reached its peak in 1918 and was on the decline before the depression that began in the latter part of 1929. The first blast furnace in Alabama was built at Cedar Creek in 1818, the year before the state was admitted to the union. In 1830, Daniel Hillman was sent from Tuscaloosa to found an iron works in Roupes Valley, where rich pockets of brown ore were numerous. He built a forge on the site of what later became Tannehill furnace and called it the Roupes Valley Iron Works. There pots, pans, plows, and horseshoes were made of metal from his Catalon forge; shaped by a large hammer operated by water power. Daniel Hillman died in 1832 and the ironworks lay idle until 1836, when Col. Ninion Tannehill bought the property, rebuilt the forge and, using slave labor from his plantation, operated and enlarged the works. By 1845 he had built two crude furnaces and did a flourishing business in ovens, skillets and kettles, which found a good market all over the South. In 1855, the plant was sold by Colonel Tannehill to Moses Stroup, an experienced ironmaster from Pennsylvania. He tore down the old furnaces and built a new plant, the ruins of which stand today (Fig. l). This furnace plant operated continuously until it was destroyed by Northern troops in 1865. It was never rebuilt, so that the shell in the picture is the same furnace that made many tons of guns and shells for the Confederacy during the war period.

Geophysical methods of prospecting taken as a whole do not seem to offer much promise to a young man planning to enter them in the future. They have come to stay, to be sure, and they will continue in at least moderate use for a long time. Domestic use of those methods presumably is at a maximum at the present time. Geophysical prospecting is expensive; the effects of the law of diminishing returns in efficiency in finding prospects can already be recognized. Small oil companies, independent oil operators, and royalty buyers have been doing much geophysical work. But in face of the increasing costs of discovery of prospects and in face of the probably decreasing favorability of the prospects discovered, I expect to see a sharp drop in their use of geophysics within the next 10 years. The major oil companies and the larger small oil companies will continue to use geophysics indefinitely, but it seems doubtful whether the very extensive domestic campaigns of a few companies will be maintained for many years, certainly not for 10 years. The use of the geophysical methods in foreign countries has not yet reached its peak, and probaby will continue to increase for several years. That peak level of activity will probably be held for 10 years, although the site of maximum activity will shift from country to country; by the end of 25 years from now, I should expect the foreign use of the methods to have leveled off to one-fourth to one-half the peak level. Foreign service in geophysics does not seem to offer an attractive career, except for men of exceptional disposition. Young men just out of college, who are willing and who can afford to spend three or four years having a fling at adventure before settling down, will find it attractive, but when their tour of foreign service is over, they probably will have harder work finding a job than when they were seniors, and their foreign experience will count for little, except for further foreign service. A few men, mainly the higher men, will have headquarters at civilized or semi-civilized cities and towns or at permanent oil-company towns, and can

J. D. Fast and J. L. Meijering (Philips Research Laboratories, N. V. Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken, Eindhoven, Netherlands)— After the departure of our friend Dijkstra to the United States, investigations on the effect of alloying elements on the behavior of nitrogen in a iron were continued in Eindhoven. We too found internal friction curves with two separate peaks for iron containing nitrogen in addition to 0.5 atomic pct V or 0.5 atomic pct Mo. Our first publication on these investigations" appeared almost simultaneously with the paper now under discussion. At first sight our experimental results seem to be in harmony with their conclusions, but a closer examination reveals that in the case of the Fe-V-N alloy the abnormal peak is not controlled by one time of relaxation only. Whereas iron containing 0.5 atomic pct Mn or Mo absorbs an amount of nitrogen of about the same magnitude as that absorbed by pure iron under identical conditions, iron containing vanadium absorbs in addition one nitrogen atom for every vanadium atom. This last amount, far exceeding the first amount in the case under consideration, combines chemically with the vanadium and causes no internal friction. The "free" nitrogen in the vanadium alloy gives rise not only to a damping peak corresponding to that in pure iron but— due to the presence of VN particles in the metal—also to the abnormal peak at higher temperatures. The VN particles create interstitial sites around themselves where the free nitrogen atoms are bound much tighter than in the normal interstices. These abnormal interstices, therefore, will capture free nitrogen atoms rapidly, whereupon these give rise to the abnormal damping. The binding energy in the abnormal interstices is not the same for all, and with coarsening of the VN precipitate the distribution of these energies is displaced toward the side of stronger binding. This is deduced from a shift of the summit of the second peak toward higher temperatures (from 80" to 88°C in our experiments) caused by prolonged heating at 950°C. INTRODUCTION Tailings dams up to about 200 ft. high are proposed to store tailings for a major mining operation on Marinduque Island in the Philippines. The original design of the dam utilized a compacted laterite starter dam followed by hydraulic placement of cycloned sands to form slime retaining dykes along the outer face of the dam. The upstream method of construction was proposed. In view of the failure of numerous tailings dams in Chile during the EL Cobre earthquake (I), an investigation was performed to assess the earthquake stability of the proposed dam. This included a soil investigation on the first cycloned sand dyke, which had been built to a height of 45 ft. Results indicated that the density of the sand was much lower than existing empirical criteria consider to be necessary for resistance to liquefaction. As a result, the dam was redesigned. The downstream method of construction was selected and a yearly construction program was developed to make use of sand available by cycloning. To increase shear strength, improve resistance to liquefaction, and to utilize steeper slopes, compaction of all sand in the dam was specified. A special underdrainage layer and toe drains were incorporated in the design. Details of the decant system and surface erosion alternatives are described. SITE CONDITIONS The mining project is located in the Philippine Islands. At the present annual rate of production, about 4,230,000 cu.m. of tailings will be produced yearly. The volume requirements for tailings storage design for the first 10 years of operation are in the order of 45,000,000 cu.m. The topography near the mine is mountainous with many gullies and canyons carved out by high intensity rainfall and runoff. The bedrock, which is generally shallow and weathered for a considerable depth, is overlain by laterite soils. Vegetation is comprised largely of palms, banana trees, and tropical shrubs and grasses. Precipitation is heavy. The average yearly rainfall over 24 years is 65.2 in. and the maximum recorded 24 hour rainfall is 9.0 in. High intensity rainfall is associated with typhoon storms, which are a seasonal threat inthe Philippines. Fig. 1 shows a summary of monthly precipitation.

The only known direct method of discovering oil deposits is by the drilling of test wells. Such exploration is always hazardous and generally very costly. The problem of the prospector, therefore, is to select test sites that are favorably located and so to reduce the odds against his venture. Early in the history of the oil industry, it was realized that oil and gas deposits, other conditions being favorable, were usually found in anticlinal types of structure. This very undestandable and rational habit of occurrence furnished the first substantial clue to the prospector. Oil occurs in sedimentary rocks, and beds of such rocks are deposited originally in approximately parallel layers. An anticline at the surface, therefore, could be accepted as an indication of an anticline in lower beds. Structural geology became the tool of the prospector, and by its use in the past two decades the majority of the known important oil deposits of the world have been discovered. This is but a partial, and the simplest, statement of the problem, Nine-tenths and more of the important oil pools of the world belong to the great class of accumulations controlled by structural traps—anti-clines, faulted structures, salt domes, etc.—but by no means all of these structures are clearly or adequately expressed at the surface. As the more obvious anticlines were explored and the search for new deposits led to the testing of progressively deeper beds, it became more and more apparent that marked favorable structures involving petroliferous rocks can, and do, exist without any marked surface expression. There are great areas where the surface, covered by some masking material such as water, alluvium, glacial deposits, or sand dunes, affords no clue to structural conditions in the subsurface, and there are also regions where the surface formations are unconformable with the oil-bearing formations. The structure in which the prospector is fundamentally interested is that of the oil-bearing formation itself, together with roof and floor beds. No other geologic information is of interest or importance to him except as it affords clues to the stratigraphy and structure of the supposed oil-bearing formations.

SEVERAL statements have been made to the Institute, somewhat detached from each other, as to the cost of some parts of these works, but they have not included any extended description of the. buildings or machinery. The general plan of the work connected with the water supply differs, in some important details, from that which has been common either in the Pittsburgh district or elsewhere, and a somewhat extended description may be of interest to the Institute, in connection with a note of the cost of the work. The plan as a whole, and nearly all the important details, were developed by Mr. William P. Shinn, C.E., the general manager of the Company. The immediate and responsible charge of the work was in the hands of Mr. John C. Lewis, C.E., to whom had been committed all the work of this general description, including the laying-out of the whole of the foundations, the erection of the buildings, and the grading and laying down of the entire railroad system. The continuous operation of the machinery and other fixtures of these waterworks, for more than three years, has fully demonstrated the correctness and economy of the plan adopted. No casualties of any moment have befallen the apparatus, and no improvements have been suggested as important except that the gate at the river end of the conduit should have been made more completely water-tight, so that the whole length of the conduit could be pumped out dry without resort to any temporary dam in the conduit itself. In general terms the works of the Edgar Thomson Company are situated on a plateau, about 52 feet above the low-water level of the Monongahela River, and about 2000 feet from its bank. The site of the works is bordered on one side by Turtle Creek, a small stream which drains a considerable area of coal mining territory. This creek is about 100 feet from the group of buildings which have been erected, but it flows into the Monongahela River at a point, about 1200 feet further up than that selected for the entrance to the water-works conduit. It was ascertained by analysis that the water in the creek contains an important percentage of sulphate of lime, while the water of the river is of unusual purity, in respect of any salts

THE Brüclrner roasting-cylinder is well known as an apparatus which has done good work in the desulphnrization, particularly of refractory silver ores, in the western districts of this country. A paper by Mr. J. M. Locke, of Cincinnati, describing the cylinders, as constructed by Messrs. Lane & Bodley, in that city, may be found at p. 295, vol. ii., of the Transactions of the Institute; and a paper by Mr. N. H. Cone, vol. iv., p. 226, gives an account of their operation in Colorado. The purpose of the present paper is to present an .improved construction, designed by Mr. Brückner. This is clearly shown in the accompanying plate, which scarcely needs explanation. It will be seen at once that this construction involves two cylinders, instead of one. Mr. Brückner thinks that three cylinders might be better yet, as securing an exact mechanical reproduction of the work of the well-known three-hearth Fortschaufelungsofen, the most perfect of the reverberatories in which delicate roasting is performed with hand-labor. THE APPARATUS. Erection of the Cylinders.—Although the cylinders may he put lip at any locality, or added to existing works, it is preferable, if possible, to choose the site on a hill sloping naturally, say about 30' or 33. Two excavations are made, one 8 to 12 feet higher up than the other; and each is protected by a wall with a batter of about 1 inch to the foot, to prevent slides of stone and earth. Each cylinder being 20 feet long and 7 feet in diameter, the total excavation should be 60 to 70 feet along the hill, and 15 to 25 feet wide. On each level a building is erected 35 feet long by 20 feet wide and 12 feet high, with the roof containing a ventilator against the hill. When both buildings are on the same level, there should preferably be a solid frame-work of very heavy timber, to carry the four rollers which bear the upper cylinder. The four rollers carrying the lower cylinder should preferably rest on two very heavy pieces of timber, strongly braced together and laid to their top in a foundation made of stone or brick and cement. THE application of geophysical techniques in the A engineering surveys of the Philadelphia and Western Extensions of the Pennsylvania Turnpike System is unique inasmuch as this is the first time, (to the authors' knowledge), that such studies have been employed on a large scale on a major highway system. These investigations were confined to specific areas along the center line of the proposed Philadelphia Extension between Carlisle and King of Prussia, and the Western Extension between Irwin and the State line near Youngstown, Ohio, as shown in Fig. 1. Along the 100 miles of the philadelphia Extension, the geophysical surveys were confined to 137 individual cuts and comprised a total length of 37.4 miles of line. The Western Extension, 66 miles in length, has 108 individual cuts. The accumulated length covered by electrical resistivity studies was 17.3 miles. The depth of the cuts varied from a minimum of 10 ft to a maximum of 62 ft. The geophysical investigations were made for the purpose of determining depths to bedrock in the 245 proposed cuts and at the sites of various structures. The 'data also served as a basis for geological interpretations of the condition of bedrock, contact zones, rock types, water table, and other factors significant in highway construction. The geophysical method of investigation employed the use of the electrical resistivity principle using the Gish-Rooney type electrical resistivity meter and the Wenner electrode configuration.* Apparent resistiv- ities were determined for constant intervals to various depths and were correlated with surface geological observations and subsurface geological conditions revealed by key diamond drill holes situated within a given cut interval. From these correlations, depths to bedrock were postulated with notations on other geological features that might be pertinent to modern highway construction. Geology The bedrock underlying the areas of the extensions of the Turnpike afford an excellent academic study of the electrical resistivity depth method as well as a practical application to modern highway engineering. The rocks encountered on the Philadelphia Extension vary in age from pre-Cambrian to Triassic and Quaternary, whereas in the Western Extension, bedrock is confined to relatively flat-lying strata in the Allegheny, Conemaugh, and Monongahela formations of the Upper Paleozoic, Pennsylvanian. Glacial and Recent stream, valley, and terrace deposits are common. Philadelphia Extension The oldest bedrock encountered in this extension are igneous and metamorphic. The continuous operation of the machinery and other fixtures of these waterworks, for more than three years, has fully demonstrated the correctness and econonly of the plan adopted. No casualties of any moment have befallen the apparatus, and no improvements have been suggested as important except that the gate at the river end of the conduit should have been made more completely water-tight, so that the whole length of the conduit could be pumped out dry without resort to any temporary dam in the conduit itself. In general terms the works of the Edgar Thomson Company are situated on a plateau, about 52 feet above the low-water level of the Monongahela River, and about 2000 feet from its bank. The site of the works is bordered on one side by Turtle Creek, a small stream which drains a considerable area of coal mining territory. This creek is about 100 feet from the group of buildings which have been erected, but it flows into the Monongahela River at a point, about 1200 feet further up than that selected for the entrance to the waterworks conduit. It was ascertained by analysis that the water in the creek contains an important percentage of sulphate of lime, while the water of the river is of unusual purity, in respect of any salts

Prior to 1927 the lead blast furnace charge at El Paso consisted principally of direct-smelting carbonate ores, very low in zinc, and the resulting slag seldom carried more than 4.0 pct. With the exhaustion of the mines in Northern Mexico which supplied these ores, they were supplanted with a much smaller tonnage of sulphide concentrates containing appreciable amounts of zinc, and the zinc content of the slag rose to 10.0 pct. The Anaconda Company's slag fuming plant at East Helena, Montana, had then been in successful operation for several years, and it was immediately recognized that, while at that time the production of high zinc slag was small, if the grade held, a plant for the recovery of zinc from the accumulated slag might some day be practical. The grade not only held but became increasingly higher so that by 1946 suffcient slag had been accumulated to warrant the construction of a fuming plant regardless of future slag production from the blast furnaces, and with the removal of Government restrictions on construction at the end of the war the project was undertaken. The general design of the plant follows that at Bunker Hill, with waste heat boiler, unit coal pulverizers and even more extensive instrumentation and automatic control. The area around the lead blast furnaces is rather congested, being cut off from the nearest feasible site for the fuming plant by the copper plant, so that the most practical route for hot slag transfer is through the converter aisle. For this reason and also to make use of the existing converter cranes to serve the fuming furnace, an unused reverberatory at the north end of the converter building was dismantled and the fuming furnace and boiler located in its place. A flue at right angles to the furnace and boiler runs northward to the U-tube coolers and baghouse (Fig 1). From the bag-house a steel flue runs eastward to an existing and long unused 300 ft con- Crete stack. The coal handling system and de-leading plant lie north of the furnace and east of the cooling tubes and baghouse. Antoine M. Gaudin was a vigorously creative man and throughout his career an internationally respected leader of his chosen profession of mineral engineering. To his professional colleagues and clients and to his former students he was both "Professor Gaudin," their wise, inspiring, and enthusiastic teacher, and "Tony," their, warm and beloved personal friend. Thus, his teachings and his unique inquisitive-creative approach to problems live on and grow in the accomplishments of his students. Antoine Gaudin was born at the turn of the century in Smyrna, Turkey, where his father was general manager of a French-owned railroad. It was there that he spent his earliest years, literally in the shadow of classic marbles from diggings at the site of Aphrodesias, which his father had rediscovered. From this, Tony developed an appreciation of the arts. He eventually surrounded himself with art treasures; he reveled in the beauties of nature, and he cherished his choice collection of rhododendron and azaleas. His artistic traits led him to take up painting when his daughter, Elinor, sought his help in blending her tints for a water color. In typical fashion he was not satisfied until he had become adept with pastels in capturing the muted tones of distant landscapes and the technical properties of light and color. Unfortunately not many paintings were produced. His paternal grandfather was Marc-Antoine Gaudin, for many years secretary of the Academie des Sciences in Paris, and a well known chemist and mineralogist whose primary interests included the synthesis of precious stones. In an autobiographical sketch written in 1939, Dr. Gaudin recalled: "As a child I saw many of the original synthetic sapphires and rubies which my father had inherited. This, coupled with my father's avocation of mining ventures and archaeology, early decided that I would become connected with the mineral industry." One can speculate that the archeological activities of his father, the mineral systhesis experiments of his grandfather, and his own early studies of mineralogy and geology formed a base from which his special talents as an experimentalist were to develop. Laboratory research under Professor Gaudin's personal guidance was often an intensive, fast-moving, and exciting experience--especially to a new graduate student. The Pinson Mining Co., which will start production in very early 1981, is the fourth Carbon-In-Pulp plant to be put into operation in the United States. The property is located in Humbolt County, Nevada, 38 km (24 miles) northeast of the town of Golconda. The famous Getchell Mine was also near Golconda and was the site of one of the early Carbon-In-Pulp plants in the 1940s. The deposit was discovered in 1971 by Reno based Cordilleran Explorations, which is founded by a consortium of Canadian mining companies. Cordilleran is a partnership consisting of John Livermore and Peter Galli. In 1972 a second but smaller deposit, called "Preble", was discovered at a location 15 miles south of Pinson. During 1980, a decision was made to place the Pinson deposit into production and Pinson Mining Company was formed. Ownership of Pinson is vested in Lacana Mining Inc. , Rayrock Mines, Inc. , Siscoe Metals, Inc., John S. Livermore, Peter E. Galli and Donald M. Duncan. Three distinct but connected ore zones occur at Pinson. Combined reserves of milling ore total 3, 200, 000 tons at an average (undiluted) grade of 4. 12 g per mt (0. 12 oz per st) Au. Initial mining will be from "A" zone which contains 1, 500, 000 tons with an average (undiluted) grade of 5. 8 g per mt (0. 17 oz per st) Au. An additional 5, 500, 000 tons of low grade ore will be mined from the Pinson deposit and processed by heap leaching. Mining reserves at Preble total at least 1, 500, 000 tons grading 2. 7 g per mt (0. 08 oz per st) Au. Production plans for the Preble deposit have not been formulated at the date of writing. Gold mineralization at both deposits is finely disseminated as sub micron sized particles. The ore at Pinson is structurally controlled and occurs in an Ordovician limestone-siltstone unit. Much of the ore has been silicified to a jasperoid. The ore zones have been entirely oxidized. Preble ore occurs in the Cambrian formation in a carbonaceous, limey shale. Only the upper part of the Preble is oxidized and amenable to conventional cyanide leaching. The Pinson ore body is adjacent to the mouth of Granite Creek in the Osgood Mountains at an elevation of 1, 615 m (5, 300 ft) with the mill being 1. 2 km (3/4 mile) from the mine at an elevation of 1, 495 m (4, 900 ft).
