Peru produced approximately 17,466,620 bbl., of oil during 1937, or slightly less than the record high of 17,593,700 bbl. established during 1936. As in 1936, the entire output of the country was derived from the La Brea-Parinas, Lobitos-Restin and Zorritos fields in the northwestern part of the country. Outside of the proven areas, drilling was 'continued by the Peruvian Government in the northern province of Tumbes on the reserved zone at Zorritos. Drilling was carried out on three locations, two of which are understood to have been abandoned during the year. In southern Peru, further attention was given by Government engineers to the Pusi and Saman districts and plans are being worked out for the commencement of drilling operations in the near future in the vicinity of Pirin. Activities in the montaiia region in eastern Peru were continued by the Compafiia Petrolera El Ganso Azul. This company acquired the interest of the Selden Breck Co., and holds some 90,000 acres along the Pachitea River a few miles above its confluence with the Ucayali. During the year, the preparation of a landing place, the cutting of a 12-km. (71/2-mile) road from the river to the drill site, and the construction of a camp were undertaken. Equipment for drilling on this company's concessions has already arrived in South America. La Brea-Parinas Estate.—Production of crude oil on the La Brea-Parinas Estate of the International Petroleum Company Limited amounted to 14,722,754 bbl. during 1937, a decrease of 403,736 bbl. from the all-time high reached during 1936. The total production from 1890 to Dec. 31,1937, was 178,390,767 bbl. During 1937, a total of 141,653 ft. was drilled, 129,516 ft. in new wells and 12,137 in deepening existing wells. In all, 57 wells were completed, 47 of which produced oil, 2 were gas wells and 8 dry. holes. Twenty-nine wells were cleaned out or deepened during the year. The average depth of new wells completed during 1937 was 2367 ft. compared with 1984 ft. for the new wells completed during 1936. There was an increased use of rotary tools during the year and this method is now used to a greater extent than the cable-tool method, which formerly predominated. Although the 71 Minerals operation is now closed down and the operating data presented is almost five years old, it is well worth describing since it was the first heap leaching operation conducted on a primarily silver ore. Tombstone was discovered in 1877 by Ed Schieffelen; and it became one of the most famous mining towns in the West through the stories connected with Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and the Clanton brothers. Like many silver deposits .in the western United States, the Tombstone ores were relatively shallow. Several million ounces of silver were recovered in the relatively few years the camp was active; but mining virtually ceased by the early 1900s and was only continued in a small way until the 19409, a history similar to that of Tuscarora. The 71 Minerals operation was started in May 1975 and continued until late 1978 within the city limits of Tombstone on waste dumps; one was the' Lucky Cuss, Schieffelen's discovery, which had accumulated from the old underground operations. This waste material was mostly less than 50 mm (2 in.) in size, although there was some larger lumps. The grade was about 34 g Ag and 0.5 g Au per mt (1.0 oz Ag and 0.015 oz Au per st). The Tombstone dumps contained approximately 1,000,000 tons. The dumps and patented claims were held by a single owner, Tombstone Development Company, thus sufficient leaching material could be acquired from one source rather than dealing with a number of individuals, as is usual in putting together leaching ventures in old mining camps. 71 Minerals Ltd. was formed and a lease of the properties obtained. A site was selected close to the major mine dumps not far from down- town Tombstone. Pads approximately 90 m (300 ft) wide and 180 m (600 ft) long with an 8-degree slope were prepared using compacted old mill tailings as a base sealant on the pads. Mining was done at a rate of about 2,000 tons per day with a dozer, two scrapers, a front-end loader, and 30 ton trucks. The ore was dumped by the scrapers as it came from the dumps with no screening or crushing in 460 mm (18 in. ) layers and trimmed with the loader. Based on bulk sampling and laboratory testing, the majority of thegold and silver values were recovered within 30 days of leaching.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of systematic analyses of weakness patterns. The term weakness here includes structural features such as fractures, foliation planes, lineaments and bedding. Many of these features are mapped by geologists in the field, but analysis of the field date is frequently overlooked. Examples are presented to show the value of such studies in petroleum and mineral exploration, in dam site selection, and in regional tectonic interpretations. Numerous theories have been presented to account for the mechanics and time of origin of fracturing. This is an extensive subject and cannot be reviewed in detail here. The reader may wish to refer to other papers.*"5 It is sufficient to say that most fracture patterns can be related to one or more of the following force mechanisms: compression, tension, torsion and fatigue (inheritance by upward propagation of pre-existing fractures). Fractures generally occur in sets in a district. The angular relationships and other characteristics of the individual sets frequently help in determining the force mechanism and movement history of the deformation. From a geometric point of view fractures are commonly referred to as longitudinal, cross, or diagonal (shear), depending upon their orientation relative to other major structural features such as anticlinal axes and so forth. These terms will be used from time to time and are illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. FIELD PROCEDURE AND TREATMENT OF DATA In fracture studies it is very important to collect adequate field data. Fig. 2 illustrates a notebook sheet for recording significant field observations in sedimentary rocks. Slight adaptations have to be made for igneous and metamorphic terrains. Fracture density and persistence are very important factors in petroleum exploration for fractured reservoirs and mineral exploration. Two recent papers in this journal1,2 contain experimental evidence for an anomaly in the concentration gradient for tracer diffusion. In both papers, the authors suggest that this anomaly is due to a Gibbs' absorption effect. Their hypothesis is that surface active tracer elements tend to remain in or near the surface adsorption layer, thereby altering the diffusion flux and concentration gradient. It is not clear how the anomaly can be explained in terms of an adsorption effect. Surface tension forces act parallel rather than perpendicular to a surface and therefore should affect only the rate of spreading of surface active agents tangentially across a surface. Frenkel3 has given a short treatment of surface tension as a driving force for surface diffusion. While the equilibrium concentration of a surface active agent at the surface of a solution is known to be higher than in the bulk, its chemical potential is necessarily the same. It is difficult to see how adsorption can result in an anomaly in the chemical potential gradient, which is the driving force for diffusion. The absence of paraffin and other oil hydrocarbons in the soil although they are concentrated in extensive deposits in some localities, the common distribution of plant remains through many formations that are not productive for oil, and many other factors, seem to indicate the existence of an intermediate organic compound between the complex plant compounds and the petroleum hydrocarbons; and much evidence points to the humus acids or associated organic compounds, which are probably collected by surface waters and concentrated in certain areas by means of precipitation by electrolytes, which would be contained in sea water or possibly in various inland seas or lakes. Present-day Evidence There are many present-day evidences of the association of petroleum with humus acids. Binney, in 1912, made observations without explanations on the peat mosses of Down Holland, England, where he found petroleum being formed by decomposition in the presence of an infiltration of sea water. Haseman and others have noted the association of asphalt and hydrocarbons with the swampy, boggy areas, particularly adjacent to the sea. Many of the rivers carry much humus acid in solution, and some tropical rivers carry in the aggregate millions of tons of humus each year. The amount of humus is a variable factor, depending on climatic conditions, and on the salts and alkalies present in the water, also on the density and temperature.

This survey is one of the more recent tests of geophysical methods of prospecting by the Dominion Observatory and the Geological Survey of Canada, of which the purpose is to find out what application such methods may have to geological problems in Canada. The Malagash salt deposit lies on the north shore of Nova Scotia about 40 miles east of the New Brunswick boundary, arid forms a part of faulted and folded Carboniferous strata. The salt beds are exposed only in the mine workings, which are about 1000 ft. deep and at one place extend for 1000 ft. along the strike. Lack of rock exposures, complicated folds, and faults make it impossible to predict the location of salt away from the mine. A survey of an area in the vicinity of the mine was therefore undertaken to find out whether the salt could be located by the torsion balance and whether its extension from the mine workings could be traced. As the gravitational effects at Malagash may be fairly typical of those at other concealed salt deposits in the Carboniferous rocks of the Maritime Provinces of Canada, the survey has a direct bearing on prospecting for other deposits. The survey was made in 1934 by A. H. Miller in collaboration with Dr. W. A. Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada. Observations began on June 15 and were completed four months later, on Oct. 15. Definite gravitational effects including a lowering of gravity were observed over the deposit. The survey also disclosed one other area of low gravity cast of the mine hut whether this area is underlain by a large body of salt is not yet established.

WHAT IS SAMPLING? We are all involved in sampling almost every day of our lives, by tasting, feeling, or smelling. Most raw materials, food products or manufactured items are sampled several times at various stages of the production process before a commodity of suitable quality can be produced. Data obtained from sampling is used in establishing price, quality control, allocating production costs, or overall process efficiency. The area of sampling outlined in this article is the collection of a small quantity of material from large continuous bulk flows of solids and slurries. The concern in obtaining the sample is that the material obtained is truly representative of the main flow in every respect. The methods and equipment outlined are for the collection of a manageable sample. The sample has to be analyzed in a laboratory to determine its characteristics and compliance to set standards. SELECTING A SAMPLING SYSTEM When selecting a sampling system, it is essential to define the requirements, as to what the actual sample obtained will be used for and what degree of precision is required. Determine whether or not the system has to comply with any set standards such as A.S.T.M. (American Society for Testing and Materials) which have established methods for collection of a gross sample of coal. Sampling which is done for in-plant or process control is not generally governed by set procedures, but similar care should be taken during the selection process so that when the equipment is put into service it will operate reliably and produce a sample which is truly representative of the total material lot or consignment.

The problems and limitations encountered in the Physical beneficiation of the Appalachian Red Iron Ores are discussed. Two major problems are identified - the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities in the iron-bearing minerals. A process that combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation-separation methods is suggested. By these methods, concentrates assaying 60-61 % Fe, exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56% Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90% iron recovery. Moreover, it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25% to 0.03% phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

The self-diffusion coefficients for a iron have been deternzined between 980° and 1167° K using Fe55 as the tracer. With decreasing temperature the diffusivity was found to decrease more rapidly than predicted by the Arrhenius equation in the region of the Curie temperature. The diffusion coefficients obtained well above the temperature of the magnetic transformation are more precise ard differ substantially from all the previously reported values. In the temperature region beginning at least 50" above T,, the diffusion coefficient is given by D = 118 (±2) exp 1 HE self-diffusion coefficients for a iron have been reported previously as the result of four independent investigations The general lack of agreement and the poor precision of most of the previous work prompted the redetermination by the present authors. The possible effect of the onset of ferromagnetism upon the diffusivity5 provided an additional impetus for this investigation. The earlier measurements of Birchenall and Mehl1 gave low values for the diffusion coefficient at temperatures below the Curie temperature, Tc. However, the precision of these measurements is not sufficient to establish an indisputable correlation between the low values and the magnetic transformation. The results of this investigation along with all the previous ones are shown in Fig. 1. INTRODUCTION The longwall method of mining coal underground is now a highly developed and accepted mining technology. However, it was only through a long history of successes and failures that this technology now has the potential for reversing the declining trend in underground mining productivity in the United States. From its early beginnings in the United States during the 1800's, several species of longwalls have evolved. The evolutionary record consists of a series of overlapping birth-death eras, with each era giving way to another unique longwall technology. Typically, an era begins when some new longwall technology appears in response to a new technical opportunity or economic need. This new technology is adopted initially by only a few innovators. Later, other imitators get on the bandwagon and the technology diffuses throughout the user population. But evolving technical demands and socio-economic circumstances eventually cause many of the adopters to discontinue its use. This paper chronicles seven eras in the history of the evolution and utilization of longwall technologies in the United States. Some of the important factors that have influenced this history are discussed. Some distinctions are drawn between the operators who were first to adopt longwalls (innovators), and the imitators who followed. Statistics are presented which show that longwall mining is being adopted at an exponentially increasing rate, substantiating the forecast for a significant number of new longwall installations in' the future. Potential barriers to this increased utilization of long- walls are noted.

THE West Indies are the summits of a submerged, mountain chain, the continuation of which must be sought in the mountains of central Honduras. In Haiti, the chain divides, one branch passing through Jamaica and the other through Cuba, the Cayman Islands, and the Misteriosa bank. Suess divides the West Indies into three zones: The first zone is entirely of volcanic origin and includes many recent volcanic cones. It includes the arcùate string of islands, which extends from Saba and St. Kitts to the Grenadines and Grenada. The western half of Guadeloupe belongs to this group. The second zone consists of a geanticline, of which the sedimentary rocks range from the Jurassic to the Quaternary, but consist chiefly of Lower Tertiary sediments. In the west it is broad, including the whole of the Greater Antilles; but in the east it is restricted to a narrow belt, which includes the Virgin Islands (except Anegada), Anguilla, St. Bartholomew, Antigua, the eastern part of Guadeloupe and part of Barbados. The islands that compose the third zone are flat and low. Like the second, this zone is broad in the west and narrow in the east; it includes the Bahamas, Anegada, Sombrero, Barbuda, and part of Barbados. Geologically, Florida and the plain of Yucatan may be regarded as belonging to it. Trinidad and Tobago, though-geographically adjacent to the Lesser Antilles, are geologically a detached part of the South American continent. The crystalline complexes of northern Trinidad and of Barbados are a continuation, en echelon, of the crystalline axis of the promontory of Paria. The folded Cretaceous and Tertiary of the central and southern parts of Trinidad represent a continuation of the folded sediments of the Paria district of Venezuela.

Knowledge of the state of stress at the bottom of a drillhole is of practical importance in rock drilling, since the induced stresses must exceed the strength of the rock in order to cause fracture. This note reports on a numerical method to determine the stress distribution at the bottom of a borehole induced by a static bit load and overburden and fluid pressures. The procedure adopted is similar to that for the plane-strain, discrete model employed by Harper and Ang.1,2 The rock medium is considered to be homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic-perfectly-plastic. THE main producing oilfields in Peru are located in the department of Piura and province of Thumbes, adjoining Ecuador on the south and west. In the department of Puno, a small field known as the Pirin or Hauncané Area was exploited some years ago by Fred Brown and associates and considerable production obtained. As. shown by the statistical table of production, this area reached its maximum production about 1909; since 1915, operations have been suspended. During the past year, however, the Peruvian Corpn. has acquired some interests in this section. It is reported to have made a few shallow tests with the hope of obtaining sufficient production to supply fuel for its railway lines, which operate between Mollendo on the coast and Puno and Cuzco in the interior. Only partial success has accompanied these efforts; nevertheless, exploitation is being continued. The petroleum of this region contains a paraffin base with small amounts of asphalt. While the gasoline content is small, the kerosene content runs as high as 30 per cent., with the fuel element varying from 50 to 72 per cent. While it is known that the structural conditions of the Huancané area are somewhat complicated, it is believed that exploitation based on a careful interpretation of the geology of the region will eventually yield commercial production of at least modest proportions. In the main fields in Piura and Tumbes, drilling operations were somewhat more active during the first half of the year, than in 1922. The latter half of the year witnessed curtailment, owing to the abnormal situation in the petroleum industry at that time. For the same reason, no attempt was made to obtain the maximum production from existing .wells. Production was pinched down and exportation of crude was correspondingly reduced during the latter half of 1923. Nevertheless, the total production of the Peruvian fields is considerably in excess of that for 1922, as is also the production of the Negritos area alone.

HAVING suggested magmatic waters as the probable agents of vein- and ore-deposition in southeastern Alaska in a paper entitled, The Geology of the Treadwell Ore-Deposits,1 it is with particular interest that I note W. Lindgren's application of the hypothesis of igneous emanations to the gold-quartz veins of Victoria and of California.2 Mr. Lindgren says: "In the above paragraphs I have repeatedly called attention to remarkable similarities in vein-filling and metasomatic action between the Victorian quartz veins and those of Sierra Nevada. Another striking similarity is that in both of these regions the veins were formed just after the intrusions of vast masses of granite or dioritic magma into crumpled and compressed sediments. I am convinced that these similarities are due to closely similar modes of formation. With some confidence, I would formulate the hypothesis that the gold and the quartz in this type of veins have been deposited chiefly by `eruptive after-effects;' in other words, chiefly by hot ascending waters originally contained in the granitic magma and released from it by decreasing pressure, due to its eruption into the upper parts of the lithosphere. It is quite possible that atmospheric waters may have played a certain part by aiding the precipitation and by effecting certain forms of concentration in the deposits." There are many reasons for extending this hypothesis to southeastern Alaska. This region and the Sierra Nevada belt of California are undoubtedly parts of one geologic province, throughout which the main events of geologic time are evidenced by identical or closely similar records in the rocks. IN VIEW of the enormous wastes of natural resources, of labor and of capital, due primarily to the economic environment, established by legislation, the general neglect of this phase of the problem of the elimination of waste is difficult to understand. In such a study, the engineering method of attacking a problem should be employed. The engineer does not try to solve his problem by disregarding natural laws, but by utilizing them. The successful engineer establishes an environ-ment in which forces, acting in harmony with natural laws upon an object or objects, will produce the desired results. The engineer who notices that the water level in a vessel, into which a gallon of water per minute is flowing, is two feet higher than the level in an adjacent vessel, connected therewith by a 6-in. pipe, does not assume that the law of gravity has ceased to work, or that water no longer seeks its level; he examines the connecting pipe for obstacles which prevent the free flow of water. Some editors, many reformers and most politicians tell us that the law of supply and demand no longer works; hence governmental control of commerce is necessary. Governmental control may temporarily-that is, until trial proves its futility- "insure domestic tranquility" and "promote the general welfare;" but it cannot "secure the blessings of liberty" which it cur-tails, nor can it "establish justice" which it violates.

THE ores now milled at the Midvale concentrator of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. come mostly from ;the company's mine in the Bingham district, about 18 miles west of Midvale. Custom ores from this same district and from other western mining districts are also milled at times. The Bingham ores consist of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite in a gangue of quartz, quartzite, limestone, and porphyry. The percentage of chalcopyrite is small, usually about 0.5 per cent., while the galena, pyrite, and sphalerite combined constitute about 60 per cent. of the total ore. These three minerals vary considerably' in amount and, at times, all three are somewhat oxidized. The ores also contain gold and silver, the former being mostly in the pyrite while the latter is generally with the galena. The crystallization of the economic minerals varies from fairly coarse to extremely fine. The ores are carried to Midvale by the Bingham & Garfield and the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroads or by the Denver h Rio Grande Western railroad, in 50-ton, steel, full dump cars. The milling problem is to recover the silver-bearing galena, the gold-bearing pyrite, and the chalcopyrite in a product suitable for the lead smelter and containing the least possible amount of gangue and sphalerite and then recover the sphalerite in a product suitable for a zinc smelter. The minerals are recovered partly by water concentration and partly by water concentration combined with electrostatic treatment.

The Anaconda Co.'s Geological Department at Butte, Mont., was started early in the Company's history because of litigation involving vein ownership and extralateral rights. The problems, some of which were resolved in courts, were many because of the large number of veins and lode locations. Defensive action was required to prove ownership and protect against illegal exploitation of the downward and extra-lateral extensions of the ore bodies. In many cases it was necessary to define the outcrop of the vein and to show that its apex was within the boundaries of the lode claim. Exhibits illustrating geology were needed to present the cases clearly, and these could be made only after careful inspection and mapping of the underground workings by competent geologists. Also, The Anaconda Co. was one of the first companies to recognize the worth of skilled mining geologists and the value of accurate records in the search for new ore. The department was organized in 1900 by H. V. Winchell who, with D. W. Brunton, worked out the methods. Reno Sales was Chief Geologist from 1906 until 1948 when he was succeeded by V. D. Perry, the present Chief Geologist. Under their direction, F. A. Linforth, M. H. Gidel, C. H. Steele, E. P. Shea, C. C. Goddard, Jr., and W. A. O'Brien enlarged the scope of the work and improved the technique.

THE Presidio mine of The American Metal Co. of Texas is situated 45 miles south of Marfa, Texas, a town on the Southern Pacific R. R., and lies approximately 20 miles north of the Mexican border. Communication with the railroad is maintained over a state highway. All supplies for mine and mill are hauled in by truck from Marfa and precipitates and concentrates are freighted to the railroad by the same means and shipped to Selby and El Paso, respectively. The mill is at the town of Shafter, 1 mile from the mine and at approximately 350 ft. lower elevation. The ore is conveyed to it by an aerial tramway which requires practically no power on account of the difference in elevation. The mill is a countercurrent decantation cyanide and gravity concentrating plant of 200 tons daily capacity. Coarse and fine crushing are done at the mill. Two near-by shallow wells in the bed of Cibolo Creek furnish an abundance of water. Power is generated for the mill and town by a Diesel engine plant.
