While intensive research continues to promote a more complete understanding of the potential and resistivity measurements that comprise the electric log, it is believed that consideration should also be given to translating these numerous and often widely separated findings into a coordinated and readable body of fundamental facts designed specifically for the petroleum engineer and geologist. Although provision is made through publication for a ready exchange of new theoretical concepts. it is also desirable to provide reviews and appraisals of the more established techniques and methods from the operating standpoint so that an economic and practical application may be realized concurrently with the theoretical progress. With these basic premises as a guide the author reviews the presnt state of electric log interpretation. The paper is directed not so much to the logging or research specialist as to the petroleum engineer and geologist to whom the electric log is only one of the many tools which he employs. Frequently, these persons do not have the time to follow in detail the many specialized contributions that appear and, as a consequence. are not in a position to place these contributions in proper relation to each other, or to the art as a whole. The paper reviews the basic steps in making quantitative determinations from the electric log of the amount of oil or gas present in subsurface formations and also discusses the degree of reliability of these determinations under various conditions. The paper also indicates the trend of future developments in electric logging systems and methods of interpretation. INTRODUCTION The electric log has been used about 20 years as a means for studying the formations penetrated by a well bore. The first half of this period is characterized by the development of suitable logging techniques and equipment. Although progress in this direction is continuing at a satisfactory rate, the last ten years are characterized more by an increasing interest in methods of electric log interpretation. During this period, a large number of fundamental papers have been published, expounding various logging techniques and particular phases of the interpretation problem. Many of these papers represent important contributions, and a few are classic. This paper is an effort to outline as concisely as possible and in simple terms the main course of progress in electric log interpretation. More specifically, it is the purpose of the paper to review the necessary elements and basic steps used in making quantitative determinations of water saturation from the electric log; and to point out the degree of reliability of these determinations under different conditions. It is strongly advised that the operating staffs of the drilling and exploration departments of oil companies cooperate wholeheartedly with both the electric logging service companies and research organizations in the testing and development of new logging systems and interpretation methods. One purpose of the paper is. however, to indicate the degree of caution which must be exercised in placing confidence in new techniques and interpretation methods that have not been thoroughly tested in the field. It is entirely possible to be cooperative in trying new methods and yet reluctant to believe in the results until the methods are firmly established. It is important to define the meaning of quantitative electric log interpretation. In the most general sense, an interpretation of the log has been made when the electrical characteristics of the formations, as portrayed on the log, have been translated into terms describing the formation geometry, rock type, or any other physical characteristics of the formations. The determination that the top of a sand is at a certain depth is an interpretation of the log. Structural determinations made by correlating electric logs from a given area are also interpretations of the logs. The term quantitative interpretation, however, will be used in this paper in the restricted sense to indicate the determination of the water saturation of a formation. This determination defines the fluid content of an oil and gas productive formation only if the porosity is known, and it assumes that the remainder of the pore space contains hydrocarbons. This assumption is believed to be true for most oil and gas productive formations. The quantitative electric log interpretation may he said to be a determination of the fluid content only to the extent which the water saturation, under the conditions given above. defines it. THE BASIC STEPS The fundamental steps in calculating water saturation from the electric log are: 1. Determination of the true resistivity of the formations from the apparent resistivities as recorded on the electric log.

Using an inverted-cone coil at 450 kHz, it has been possible to levitate iron (FeS), cobalt (CoS), and nickel (NiS) sulfides. Important nontransition metal sulfides such as ZnS, PbS, and Cu2S have proven impossible to levitate although Cu-Fe-S ternary alloys containing 30 wt pct S and up to 10 wt pct Cu, and Cu-Co-S and Cu-Ni-S ternary alloys containing 30 wt pct Cu have been levitated. The levitation technique has been used in preliminary experiments on the vaporization from liquid sulfides and the reaction of liquid metal-sulfur alloys with oxidizing atmospheres. The course of the reactions with pure oxygen were followed using highspeed photography and two-color pyrometry. ELECTROMAGNETIC levitation is now established as a basic laboratory technique in high-temperature research but its application has been restricted mainly to metals and alloys. Applications have included alloy preparation,' metal purification,2'3 determination of liquid metal densities and emissivities,4,5 and studies of metal supercooling,4 alloy thermodynamics,6 and vaporization phenomena.7-9 The application of the technique to compounds has not been considered previously. The successful investigation of the reactions between dilute iron alloys and oxidizing atmospheres10'1 has prompted the current physico-chemical studies involving levitated metal sulfide drops and flowing inert or oxidizing atmospheres. This paper presents the results of such a study and provides a basis for future studies involving a wide range of other compounds of metallurgical interest. The successful levitation of many metal sulfides and mattes provides a method of studying the oxidation reactions fundamental to flash-smelting and similar pyrometallurgi-cal operations under closely controlled laboratory conditions. In addition the system allows the use of a controlled atmosphere (e.g., a gas stream of a certain H2/H2S ratio) with a particular chemical potential to study the relevant thermodynamic equilibria or the mass transfer processes between the atmosphere and the levitated drop under conditions where the hydrodynamics of the system can be closely defined. The optimum frequency for the levitation melting of metals in an inverted-cone coil type inductor is within the radio frequency range 400 to 500 kHz. At frequencies lower than 10 kHz the rate of heat generation is usually insufficient to melt the levitated charge' or where melting is achieved, "dripping" from the charge is encountered.'' At frequencies above 2 mHz the levitation force decreases. Metals, alloys and preheated elemental semiconductors such as germanium and silicon, have been levitated but the levitation of only a few metal compounds has been reported. Jostsons13 and the authors have levitated liquid titanium-oxygen alloys containing 50 at. pct 0 while clark14 has reported the levitation of mixtures of FeS and MnS for short periods. With a "cold crucible" inductor sterling15 has melted ferrites by preheating them by induction in a 4 mHz field and melting at a lower frequency. However this second type of inductor has been designed purely for the melting of materials without contamination; there is only a small gas film between the charge and the inductor and the electromagnetic levitation effect is of secondary importance. For this reason further discussion will be restricted to the use of the coil type inductor. The assessment of the suitability of a particular metal compound for levitation is based upon the following two criteria: i) thermal stability, and ii) physical "levitability". In this paper these two criteria will be considered separately. The thermal stability of a solid or liquid metal compound with respect to a gaseous environment depends upon its chemical reactivity with that environment or, in the case of an inert atmosphere considered here, its volatility. The physical criterion as to whether or not a particular compound can be levitated is based upon a comparison between those physical properties of the compound determining "levitability" which are defined by the fundamental equations of levitation theory as developed by Okress et a1.,16 and the properties of the metals. Since it is not practical to cover the vast field of metal compounds, further discussion will concentrate on the metal sulfides but the treatment would be applicable to any metal compound. THE THERMAL STABILITY OF METAL SULFIDES The temperatures usually encountered during levitation in inert atmospheres cover the range 1400" to 2000°C. The stabilities of the condensed states of the sulfides under these conditions are considered in relation to the periodic classification by reference to Table I. Two general classes of sulfides emerge. The solid sulfides of elements of group IIB and of groups further to the right are volatile while those sulfides of group IB and of groups further to the left are nonvolatile solids. The sulfides described as volatile may be dismissed as unsuitable for levitation. The stabilities of the more favorable nonvolatile sulfides under the anticipated conditions must be studied more closely From Table I it is seen that the alkali metal sulfides exist as liquids in the temperature range of in-

THE developments in construction and operation of the basic open-hearth furnace that have taken place in recent years have placed new emphasis on the vital influence played by regulation and control of the combustion system in both furnace production and furnace life. The several factors influencing flame development, such as regulation of fuel supply, air supply, air preheat, furnace draft, and furnace reversal, must be controlled closely if successful furnace performance is to be accomplished. Rugged instrumentation of distinctive design is required to supply dependable information concerning operating conditions, which is requisite to proper regulation of combustion. This chapter attempts to give a practical discussion of the various features of open-hearth practice and instrumentation related to the efficient heating of the furnace, control of temperature, and protection of the furnace structure from accidental overheating. The appended references will be helpful to readers wanting a more detailed treatment of individual topics. OPEN-HEARTH FUELS The most important open-hearth fuels are listed in Table 4-1 together with their compositions and other data useful for combustion calculations. A detailed discussion of open-hearth fuels is not attempted here, but certain factors peculiar to their application to this type of process are briefly indicated on the following pages. Very often an open-hearth shop is forced by economic factors to use a fuel to which its furnaces are not very well adapted, because the general fuel-allocation scheme for the works as a whole seems to demand it. Often a variable marginal supply of coke-oven gas or tar must be consumed by the open hearth, together with another fuel such as producer gas, natural gas, or oil, to fill out total requirements. A refinement of the Seeger model for intersection process is investigated which is in better agreement with experimental observations than the original. It is shown that, in single crystals, the strain hardening in Stage II is mainly due to the short-mnge interactions when intersection is the rate-controlling process. It is also demonstrated that the creep curves, as predicted by this theory, are in good agreement with the experimental observations. MOTT: Cottrell? and Seeger have developed an approximate theory for plastic deformation of single crystals over the range of variables where the strain rate is controlled by the rate of intersection of dislocations. Although it is now generally agreed that the low temperature deformation of many pure metals is controlled by the intersection mechanism, various dictates of the over-simplified Seeger model are not in good agreement with all the experimental facts. It is the purpose of this paper to reveal that by appropriate extensions of the Seeger model, particularly those suggested by Basinski: a much more reliable theory results. The refined model to be presented here will be shown to account, in a satisfactory way, for the effect of stress, temperature, and strain on the creep rate under constant stress and for the effect of temperature and strain on the flow stress in constant strain-rate tests. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD To Check the theoretical deductions, both creep and tension tests were conducted on single crystals of high-purity Al (99.994 pct Al) so oriented that both the active slip plane and the Burger's vector of the operative dislocations on that plane made angles of about 45 deg to the tension axis. Single crystals of aluminum (5/8 in. by 1/10 in. by 8 in.) were grown in a graphite mold under an inert atmosphere using the Bridgman method. The chemical composition of the aluminum is given in Table I. A common seed was used for all crystals and their orientation is shown in Fig 3. The extensometry consisted of two differential transformers with matched outputs mounted so as to measure the extension in a 2 in. gage length. The amplified difference in output of the two transformers was recorded by a potentiometer. The amplification was calibrated before each run so that one chart division of the recording potentiometer indicated a 105 shear strain on the specimen. Stresses were measured to the nearest 1 x l04 dynes per sq cm. ACTIVATION VOLUME The concept of Basinski that the activation volume is not constant but is a function of the force that aids thermal fluctuation in effecting the cutting of dislocations will be adopted in this section. The force acting due to an applied shear stress on the dislocation being intersected is where L is the mean spacing between the forest dislocations, is the Burger's vector and T is the back stress. A detailed discussion about the origin of back stress will be taken up later in this report. As shown by Basinski, the activation energy, U, that must be supplied by a thermal fluctuation in order to effect intersection, is equal to where x is the distance through which the dislocation must be translated for complete intersection, and Fm is the maximum force encountered in intersection. When the applied stress is decreased abrupt ly F also decreases and the activation energy increases correspondingly as documented in Eqs. [ 1 ] and [2]. The problem of strata control has of necessity been prominent in mining, and accounts of individual experience and research abound in the literature of most mining countries. Organized rescarch began in Britain by the formation of a committee, upon the recommendation of the Safety in Mines Research Board in 1923, to investigate methods of reducing accidents from falls of roof in coal mines. This committee examined current practice in supporting underground workings in the principal coal fields, and its findings have been published in the Board's publications.' - Toward the end of these investigations it was suggested by the Chief Inspector of Mines that committees of the several mining institutes be formed to examine the problem in their respective districts. The formation of these committees marked a new phase in research on strata control. The work, though being done in the separate coal fields, followed a scheme outlined by the chief Mining Engineer of the Research Board, and was coordinated by his office. FACTORS INVOLVED The subject is being considered in Britain from two aspects: 1. To provide. by supports, means to prevent falls of fractured ground. 2. TO develop methods whereby the strata can be maintained in the least broken condition and thus make falls less likely. The first aspect is the one that will most likely lead to immediate results from the accident standpoint. It depends largely upon the assimilation of already acquired knowledge regarding the properties of supports and their correct application. The second aspect is perhaps more fundamental, and involves also the properties of the strata and their behavior under the influence of the forces induced by mining. The problem involves many natural factors that cannot be controlled, such as depth, inclination and thickness of seam and nature of the rocks. Other factors, which may be considered to a certain extent controllable, cannot be varied readily and with sufficient frequency to facilitate easy investigation; some of these are: rate of advance of the working face, length of face, direction of the face with regard to cleat and inclination, system and arrangements of rock packing behind longwall faces. In any given case the very many factors present have a mutual influence upon the effects produced in the mine. For example, a study of the effects of rate of advance cannot be done without considering the effects of other factors such as nature of strata, direction of face and quality and arrangement of supports. The Widmanstatten figures found in the steels have been long recognized and in some aspects carefully studied,' especially as they occur in cast hypoeutectoid alloys. Aside from the practical importance of the structures obtained in the steels by various heat treatments, a study of the characteristics of these figures is interesting because of the rich opportunity the system affords to obtain new data on the mechanism of segregation from solid solutions. This opportunity is twofold: first, by changing composition within the austenite range the proeutectoid precipitate may be changed from that of ferrite to that of cementite, thus offering the same opportunity for changing the type of precipitate while maintaining the same basic lattice as that afforded by the Cu-Zn alloys;2 and second, the eutectoid inversion leads upon drastic quenching to the formation of martensite, a Widman-statten figure of unique interest from the crystallographic viewpoint, particularly in comparison with those formed on slow cooling.3 We have, therefore, two types of structure to study: that formed on slow cooling of hypoeutectoid and hypereutectoid alloys, and that formed on quenching hypoeutectoid, eutectoid, and hypereutectoid alloys. For each of these types of structure we require the crystallographic plane in the mother austenite along which the precipitate forms (we shall see that the precipitates in these alloys are invariably platelike in form), and also the orientation of the precipitate upon this plane. One of the greatest factors in our industrial development is cheap and convenient power. Long-distance electrical transmission has now reached such a stage that it is feasible, and practicable, to utilize the water-power of the country which was heretofore too remote for consideration. In all of the changes of energy from its various sources to its electrical applications, water-power stands pre-eminent in point of economy. Power-users the world over have endeavored to utilize this force in preference to any other, and until long-distance transmission was found practicable it seemed that every available water-power in this section of the country was doing its full share for the benefit of mankind. The success of each great industrial development has been clue in a greater part to some one man one who is just a step in advance of the rest in his particular field; one who is able to grasp a situation and foresee possibilities; and, above all, one who has that indomitable pluck and perseverance which sees in each obstacle one more step toward success. Such a mail is Eugene L. Ashley, for it was through his efforts that the development of the greatest power on the Hudson river was made possible. For several years prior to 1897 the various properties along the river between Glens Falls and Palmer Falls were in the hands of speculators. These men knew the value of waterrights, but they had not the ability to assemble the properties and finance such an undertaking. In 1897 Mr. Ashley began buying these water-rights, and, after two years of litigation, title mas secured to all of the properties along each side of the river, and the Hudson River Water-Power Company was organized to construct a dam and transmit power to the surrounding cities and villages. THE object of this paper is to present a survey of some of the physical properties of sheet nickel silver when subjected to cold rolling and when annealed at temperatures extending from 350° C. throughout the commercial annealing range. A number of alloys were taken from stock and analyzed. Four of these, representing low nickel and high nickel both with and without lead, were chosen for the tests. The bars (which were then coiled) were annealed together in a mill muffle and afterwards pickled in a 10 per cent. sulfuric-acid solution and cold rolled in stages of approximately .one number (B. & S.) at a time to No. 18 B. & S. gage. After each stage, suitable samples were set aside for physical tests. Additional samples were chosen for tests after the bars were rolled to Nos. 8, 10, 12, and 14 gage. These samples were annealed together in the mill muffle and, after pickling, were finished on 0.050-in. gage, yielding a series of specimens 2, 4, 6, and 8 numbers hard for the subsequent annealing tests. Tensile test pieces 9 by 1 in. (22.9 by 2.5 cm.) were cut from both lots and the central portion was milled to give a test section 2 ½ in. long by ;Z in. wide. A distance of 2 in. was marked off on the edge of each specimen with light punch marks. In the case of the annealed alloys, Erichsen test pieces 4 by 2 1/2 in. were also taken.

Tar sand deposits in the state of Utah contain more than 25 billion bbl of in-place bitumen. Although 30 times smaller than the well-known Athabasca tar sands, Utah tar sands do represent a significant domestic energy resource comparable to the national crude oil reserves (31.3 billion bbl). Based upon a detailed analysis of the physical and chemical properties of both the bitumen and the sand, a hot-water separation process for Utah tar sands is currently being developed in our laboratories at the University of Utah. This process involves intense agitation of the tar sand in a hot caustic solution and subsequent separation of the bitumen by a modified froth flotation technique. Experimental results with an Asphalt Ridge, Utah, tar sand sample indicated that percent solids and caustic concentration were the two most important variables controlling the performance of the digestion stage. These variables were identified by means of an experimental factorial design, in which coefficients of separation greater than 0.90 were realized. Although preliminary in nature, the experimental evidence' gathered in this investigation seems to indicate that a hot-water separation process for Utah tar sands would allow for the efficient utilization of this important energy resource. The projected increase in the ever-widening gap between the domestic energy demand and the domestic energy supply for the next few years has motivated renewed interest in energy sources other than petroleum, such as tar sands, oil shale and coal. Although a number of research programs on the exploitation of national coal and oil shale resources have already been completed, very few programs have been initiated on the processing of tar sand resources in the United States. In recognition of their significance as a domestic energy resource, investigators at the University of Utah have designed an extensive research program on Utah tar sands. An important phase of this program, and the main subject of this publication, is the development of a hot-water process for the recovery of bitumen from Utah tar sands, as a preliminary step toward the production of synthetic fuels and petrochemicals. The term "tar sand" refers to a consolidated mixture of bitumen (tar) and sand. The sand in tar sand is mostly a-quartz as determined from X-ray diffraction patterns. Alternate names for "tar sands" are "oil sands" and "bituminous sands." The latter is technically correct and in that sense provides an adequate description. Tar sand deposits occur throughout the world, often in the same geographical areas as petroleum deposits. Significantly large tar sand deposits have been identified and mapped in Canada, Venezuela and, the United States. By far, the largest deposit is the Athabasca tar sands in the Province of Alberta, Canada. According to the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board (AERCB),2,3 proved reserves of crude in-place bitumen in the Athabasca region amount to almost 900 billion bbl. To date, this is the only tar sand deposit in the world being mined and processed for the recovery of petroleum products. Great Canadian Oil Sands, Ltd. (GCOS) produces 20 million bbl of synthetic crude oil per year. Another plant being constructed by Syncrude Canada, Ltd. is expected to produce in excess of 40 million bbl of synthetic crude oil per year. According to the Utah Geological and Mineral Survey (UGMS), tar sand deposits in the state of Utah contain more than 25 billion bbl of bitumen in place, which represent almost 95% of the total mapped resources in the United States.4 The extent of Utah tar sand reserves seems small compared to the enormous potential of Canadian tar sands. Nevertheless, Utah tar sand reserves do represent a significant energy resource comparable to the United States crude oil proved reserves of 31.3 billion bbl in 1976.5 Tar sands in Utah occur in 51 deposits along the eastern side of the state.4 However, only six out of these 51 deposits are worthy of any practical consideration (Fig. 1). As indicated in Table 1, Tar Sand Triangle is the largest deposit in the state and contains about half of the total mapped resources. Information regarding the grade or bitumen content of Utah deposits is still very limited. The bitumen content varies significantly from deposit to deposit, as well as within a given deposit. In any event, the information available6-8 seems to indicate that Utah deposits are not as rich in bitumen as the vast Canadian deposits which average 12 to 13% by weight.9 Although many occurrences of bitumen saturation up to 17% by weight have been detected in the northeastern part of the state (Asphalt Ridge and P. R. Spring), the average for reserves in Utah may well be less than 10% by weight. Separation Technology As in any other mining problem, there are two basic approaches to the recovery of bitumen from tar sands. In one

A prototype equipment has been designed and built for the digital recording of well logs on magnetic tape at the same time that the regular film recording is made. The format of the digital tape produced is such that it can be used directly at the input of the ZBM 704, 7090 or other models of ZBM computers which accept digital magnetic tape. This apparatus has been used for the experimental field recording of dipmeter tape logs which were subsequently computed by means of an ZBM 704 or 7090. In this paper the equipment and the digital tape are described briefly, and their application to the computer-interpretation of dipmeter data is discussed. A principal element in the interpretation of the dipmeter log is the correlation of the three microresirtivity dipmeter curves to determine the depth displacements between them. Several correlation methods for computer use are considered, with particular attention to their sensitivity to error and their consumption of computer time. The tape data were used to compute information content of the dipmeter microresistivity curves in terms of their frequency spectra. The results show that the sampling rate used in recording the digital information is quite adequate and illustrate a use of the digital tape in evaluating the characteristics of new tools. Some examples of field results are shown. It can be foreseen that, when digital tape recording becomes available for general field use, a whole new realm of possibilities will be opened up for the processing of other well logs through computations, which hitherto were not feasible because they were too laborious and time-con.sunzing. INTRODUCTION The last few years have seen a revolution in the design and production of data-processing equipment. Stored-pro-gram digital computers have progressed from a research curiosity to the basis of a major industry. There are now hundreds of such machines in daily use in the United States. With the acceptance of a technique that was, in fact, already clearly described by John von Neumann in 1945, the last decade has seen great strides in the development'of components, reliability, programming systems and, most spectacularly, in the sheer number of machines built and in use. In 1957 there were enough digital computers available to the oil industry to justify the suggestion that it would be worthwhile to investigate the possibility of using these machines in processing well log data.' The first result of this investigation was the appearance of what may be referred to as the input-output bottleneck. Well logs are customarily recorded on film. To get these data into a machine required then (and still does): a time-consuming semi-automatic reading of the film; conversion of the log data to digital form; and recording these digital data in some medium acceptable for computer input, such as cards, magnetic tape, or punched paper tape. However, the recording, reading, and re-recording could only result in deterioration of the data. Therefore, it was concluded that the fist step should be the development of a new, more direct recording technique supplemental to the film recording, which would provide easy access to the digital computer. There are many solutions to the problem of recording log data in an easily recoverable form. After careful consideration it was decided to adopt the boldest solution which, it was felt, was also the most elegant. It was decided to record well logs directly, in the field, on magnetic tape in such a way that this tape could be used without further modification as an input to the IBM 704 or 7090 computer. To realize practical field recording of magnetic tape logs, it became necessary to develop in a rather small package, an analog-to-digital converter, a tape recorder, and the necessary multiplexing and control circuits to allow the simultaneous recording of a multiplicity of logging signals. The magnetic tape recording was to be made simultaneously with the conventional logging operation in such a way as not to interfere with it. Along with the development of hardware, it was necessary to begin development of interpretation techniques and machine programs that would exploit the power of the digital computer. Here, again, there is a long list of possible applications. After much consideration it was decided to concentrate on the interpretation of the dipmeter log as a first application. It is the object of this paper to describe in some detail the developments sketched in the last three paragraphs.

Several techniques, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, conventional, metallography, and mechanical property measurements are combined to investigate decomposition in the suPersaturated solid solution Fe-27 at. pct Be. The following sequence of structures for aging temperatures below 400°C is established: massive short-range order, pseudo-FeBe (L2o) order, Fe3Be (DU3) order, sinusoidal modulation of composition, general or continuous precipitation, and discontinuous or cellular precipitation. In addition to this sequence itself, several features of the individual stages are noteworthy; for example, when coherent modulations occur, their development is parallel to (100) everywhere in the specimen apparently without incubation, and both the wavelength and the composition amplitude of the modulations increase with aging time. Two types of discontinuous reaction are observed, depending upon the aging temperature. At low temperatures (<550°C) the boundary-nucleated variety of discontinuous precipitate predominates; but at higher temperatures (>600°C) the crystallographic variety occurs instead. Hardness and flow-stress measurements clearly reflect the quoted structure sequence. Some qualitative aspects of the structure changes and of the relationship between mechanical properties and structure are discussed. BERYLLIUM in solid solution markedly strengthens iron.&apos;" A recent study demonstrated that not only were supersaturated single crystals of Fe-27 at. pct Be very strong, but they deformed primarily by mechanical twinning.3 Such behavior, coupled with the decrease in solid solubility of beryllium in a Fe from about 33 at. pct at 1165°C to about 10 at. pct at 500°C4 as shown in Fig. 1, leads naturally to questions about property changes with aging in this system. In 1929 roll,1 and later Seljesater and Rogers,5 reported that useful increases in strength could be obtained by aging quenched Fe-Be alloys, but it was not until quite recently that any of the details of precipitation in these alloys were studied. Richman6 observed that both an Fe3Be superlattice (with a DO3 crystal structure the same as Fe3A1, illustrated in Fig. 2) and a modulated structure preceded the appearance of a discrete second phase in the 20 at. pct Be composition. Here, a modulated structure refers to a periodic composition fluctuation within one crystal, while its lattice remains coherent. Subsequent work on a Fe-Be alloys by Heubner7 and von Heimendahl and Heubner8 confirmed the existence of the modulated structure, although only an FeBe (L20) ordered structure was detected (also shown in Fig. 2). Both Rich-man and Heubner corroborated the large increases in hardness during aging reported earlier, but other mechanical properties were not examined. Since modulated systems are encountered relatively infrequently, the influence of coherent modulation upon mechanical properties is not well-known. With the accumulation of information about age-hardening systems, it has become clear that many precipitation reactions cannot always be described by the concept of heterogeneous nucleation at some lattice discontinuity followed by diffusional growth. Rather, complex sequences involving prior "preparation" of the matrix are quite common; that is, a transition structure occurs in the parent phase, instead of in some "nucleus" form. Delineation of such subtle sequences appears to be a worthwhile step toward the understanding of solid-state precipitation. Electrochemical measuretnents of the solid oxide electrolyte galvanic cells CY-Cr2O3 I ZrO2 (CaO) 1 O (in Fe alloy) CY-Cr2O3 I Tho2 (Y2O3)I O en Fe alloy) have been made at 1600°C (2912°F) in order to test the Performance of such cells at liquid steel temperatures. The oxygen pvobe (cell) consists of a disk of ZrO2 (CaO) or Tho2 (Y2O3) electrolyte fused at one end of a silica tube filled with a mixture of Cr-Cr2O3 which is the reference electrode. Upon immersion in liquid steel, the electromotive force readings achieve a steady value within a few seconds, and remain steady for 30 win or more. The perforwzance of the probes has been tested using Fe-O, Fe-Si-O, Fe-Cr-O, Fe-V-O, and Fe-Al-O alloys; the oxygen contents of liquid steel derived from the measured electromotive forces are in satisfactory agreement with those determined by arulysis. Use of the probe in the deoxi-datiorz of steel, in laboratory experiments, is discussed. The results indicate that there is insignificant electronic conductivity in ZrO2(CuO) at oxygen activities down to those corresponding to 10 ppm in steel. At lower oxygen activities, probes tipped with ThOn (Y2O3) disks perform satisfactorily at oxygen activities down to 1 ppm O or less. THE key to the control of deoxidation of steel is a sensing device to measure rapidly the concentration of oxygen in liquid steel in the furnace, ladle or tun-dish at any desired stage of deoxidation. The analysis of the cast steel by the neutron-activation or vacuum-fusion method gives total oxygen as oxide and silicate inclusions. This analysis is important for guidance to steel cleanliness; however, such a postmortem is of little value in the control of deoxidation of liquid steel. At the General Meeting of the American Iron and Steel Institute in New York, 1968, Turkdogan and Fruehan&apos; presented a paper on the preliminary results of the work done in this laboratory on rapid determination of oxygen in steel by an oxygen probe. Details of the work done in this laboratory leading to the development of a galvanic cell for the determination of oxygen in liquid steel, and the results of the tests made are given in this paper. It was through Wagner&apos;s contributions, since the early Thirties, to the physical chemistry of semiconductors in general that it ultimately became possible to construct galvanic cells for application at high temperatures. In 1957, Kiukkola and wagner2 successfully demonstrated the use of several solid electrolytes in measuring the free energies of several chemical reactions, in particular, the use of lime-stabilized zir-conia in high-temperature oxidation reactions. Starting 7 years later, a number of papers appeared in the technical literature3-&apos; demonstrating possible applicability of galvanic cells for the determination of oxygen in liquid steel. In the earliest work, Japanese investigators3j4 experimented with various types of reference electrodes, e.g., graphite-saturated liquid iron at 1 atm CO or Ni-NiO mixtures; the results obtained, though promising, were not of sufficient accuracy. Except for the work of Baker and West,6 all other investigators5,7,8 showed that ZrO2(CaO) electrolyte could be used for this purpose. The main part of the galvanic cell used by Fischer and ~ckermann&apos; and by schwerdtfeger7 (the latter work was done in this laboratory), consisted of a ZrO2(CaO) tube, -1 cm ID, closed at one end, with a platinum contact wire fixed mechanically inside the closed end. The tube was flushed with a gas of known oxygen partial pressure, e.g., air, CO-CO2 or H2-CO2 mixtures; gas along with the platinum lead wire served as the reference electrode. The oxygen contents derived from measured electromotive forces agreed reasonably well with the oxygen contents determined by vacuum-fusion analysis. It is evident from recent investigations that the electromotive force technique using a solid oxide electrolyte is fundamentally well suited for the determination of oxygen in liquid steel. However, it is equally clear that the cell arrangement of the type as commonly used is in need of considerable improvement, as it exhibits several shortcomings for industrial and even laboratory use. 1) Because of its size, the zirconia tube, though stabilized, has a poor resistance to thermal shock. 2) Fine pores and microcracks, which are invariably present in zirconia tubes, are detrimental to the satisfactory operation of the cell, particularly when gas reference electrodes are used. 3) Air or carbon dioxide reference electrodes give rise to high electromotive force readings; as a result, the determination of oxygen in steel becomes less accurate. For higher accuracy, the oxygen partial pressure of the reference electrode should be in the range similar to that of oxygen in steel. 4) Even in laboratory experiments, difficulties are experienced when flushing the tube with gases and maintaining the proper gas flow rate. Fischer and Ackermann,&apos; who used air as the reference electrode, reported that when the flow rate was too low, furnace gases would leak into the electrolyte tube, therefore lowering the oxygen potential and measured electromotive force. The required flow rate in order to avoid leakage depended on the tightness of the electrolyte tube which varied with different tubes, thus making it difficult to predict in advance the required flow rate. Application of technology to the search for new deposits went on apace in 1963. Traditional methods, aided by modern communications, were successful in some out-of-the way corners of the world that had not been adequately prospected, but the co-ordination of several mutually supporting techniques is necessary to define exploration targets in most areas today. Although these obviously include geophysics and geochemistry, which are treated elsewhere in this issue, geology continues to play a major role. As the search focuses on less and less obvious targets there will be more need than ever to "pull out all the stops." Any anomaly may have significance and must be evaluated as a possible lead. Ability to detect them increases as the laboratory workers refine techniques for measuring physical, chemical, and isotopic properties; it will be increasingly the responsibility of the exploration geologist to understand and apply these to economic problems. Simple propecting, the search for outcrops of recognizable ores of traditional types, was perhaps most successful for iron. Potentially large deposits of high-grade magnetite-specularite-hematite ore have been found in the Mary River area near the north end of Baffin Island. The ore holds up four hills that stand some 1500 ft above the surrounding country; obviously they were ripe for discovery by the first person to come across them, in this case Murray Watts, president of British Ungava Explorations, Ltd, As preliminary examination indicates a lump ore averaging 68 to 70% iron, these deposits may be commercial in spite of the unfavorable climate and their isolation from world markets.

Roe Cnnada Ltd., Toronto)—Reference is made to the coherency hardening of ß due to ß&apos; and also to the hardening of ß due to a coherent precipitation of the a phase. What is meant by the term "ß&apos;?" Would not the coherency hardening of ß during cooling be due to precipitation of a sub-microscopic dispersion of a, as is the case during reheating a ß-quenched alloy? I feel that these two phenomena are essentially the same mechanism, i.e., precipitation of a from unstable or supersaturated ß. From the text, it would appear that Tables III and IV are intended to show the effect of the martensite transformation on the properties of Ti-Mn alloys. Referring to Table 111, the ß-quenched alloys would contain a greater proportion of retained ß than would the equilibrated alloy. Could not the increase in properties be attributed to this, along with possible coherency hardening of the ß? In the same way, the structures referred to in Table IV contain ß from which they could derive their hardness. It would appear to be difficult, if not impossible, to assess the role of the martensite transformation from the data contained in these tables. F. C. Holden, H. R. Ogden, and R. I. Jaffee (authors&apos; reply)—In reply to the first question raised by Mr. Bishop, the term "ß"&apos; designates an apparent retained-p structure which is harder than it is after the most rapid cooling from the ß field. It is thought to be the result of a coherent precipitation of a. The mechanism by which hardening takes place is undoubtedly the same as that involved in the early stages of aging of a re-tained-p structure, and we are in agreement with Mr. Bishop on this point. The term "ß&apos;" to designate the anomalously hard retained-ß structure was agreed upon at a symposium in 1953." The authors do not agree that the quantity of retained ß and/or ß&apos; in the ß-quenched specimens of Table III is necessarily greater than that of the 600°C equilibrated specimens. The ß-quenched specimen has a structure which appears to be completely a&apos; formed by the martensite reaction. It is recognized that there could be some retained ß (or ß&apos;) between the a plates if the M, temperature is below room temperature. This is unlikely for the 3.4 pct Mn alloy where the M, is known to be at about 640°C. Therefore, the increase in strength cannot be attributed to the presence of a greater quantity of coherency-hardened ß, but, rather, the increase in strength must be attributed to the transformation products formed, e.g., a&apos; (martensiti-cally formed a). Concerning the data in Table IV, we agree that it is difficult to estimate the role of the martensite reaction, since the 6.4 pct Mn alloy was retained ß in the quenched condition.

In the past few years much con-sideration has been given to the evaluation of the effect of hydraulic fracturing on the productivity of wells. Generally, these studies included the evaluation of fracturing materials, fracture extension and formation damage due to the use of various fracturing fluids. Only little consideration has been given to the characteristics, and in particular the flow capacity, of the fracture itself and its effect on well productivity. This paper presents the results of laboratory investigations pointed toward fie evaluation of the efficiency of various fracrures with special emphasis on the flow capacity of these fractures. Data presented in this paper are the results of both an electrical model study and physical testing. Under consideration are (I) effect of overflush, (2) premature production of well after treatment, (3) "tailing-in" with coarse sand near the end of the treatment, (4) effect of propping agent size and concentration, (5) reduction in effective frac-ture permeability caused by formation caused by formation fines, silt and clays, and (6) effect of various fluids on formation strength and competency. The results of this investigation indicate that the flow capacity of a fracture is affected by any or all of the various parameters mentioned above. The authors believe that a better understanding arid utilization of these factors should result in more efficient formation fracturing. INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing has become almost a standard practice of many companies for stimulating production from old and new wells. Although most companies utilize this service, techniques of application vary widely between companies and areas. Probably too often when a well in an area responds favorably to a particular technique all future wells in the same area are treated in a similar manner. Possibly a modification of the technique would result in a further production increase. Variables, of which many are extremely difficult to evaluate from field results, hamper the selection of procedure changes. Attempts are being made by a number of organizations to analyze statistically treating techniques from production data. This is a very worthy and necessary approach but very possibly laboratory investigations may aid in evaluating some of the variables which tend to affect the results of a fracturing treatment. Some of the factors cannot be studied from practical field experience and only laboratory tests can show the possibilities which might exist. One of the factors which appears to be of major concern today is the flow capacity of the created fracture and how it can be changed. Papers on this general subject have been primarily concerned with the size of propping agent and the extent of fracture. Papers have also been written on the possible permeability damage to formations by fracturing fluids. In addition, it might be possible that another type of flow restriction is prevalent. This would be a restriction of flow through a sand-packed frac- ture caused by foreign materials integrating within the propping agent. This paper presents preliminary data obtained in an attempt to evaluate the effect of some factors affecting flow through sand-packed fractures. No attempt is being made to offer a fracturing technique adaptable to all areas and conditions, but to furnish data tending to show the possible effects which might be caused by variations in procedures and materials. PROPPING AGENT PERMEABLLITIES A hydraulically induced fracture containing sand as a propping agent may theoretically be classified as a packed-sand system. The flow of fluids through such packed systems has been the subject of much research. Although there have been numerous methods proposed for the evaluation of such systems, most writers agree on the general properties affecting their flow capacity or permeability. These properties include porosity, particle size, sphericity and the roughness of the particle. In some methods of evaluation . the particle size and sphericity terms are combined to produce an equation which is a function of the surface area of the particles. In this study the permeability of various fracturing sands was both measured and calculated. The apparatus for the permeability measurements consisted of a 52-in. Lucite tube with a 2.5-in. ID. A cellular appearing recrystallization product formed by annealing a cold-worked nickel-base super-alloy at 1800°F has been studied by electron nzicroscopy. Prior to deformation, an equilibrium micro-structure of fcc matrix y and cuboidal ,,&apos;, Ni (Al, Ti), precipitates of CuzAu structure had been established by an age at 1825°F. The strain-free recrystallization cells consist of very large rodular y&apos; particles in a y matrix. They precipitate is oriented and coherent both before and after recrystallization. The results showed that y&apos; coarsening accompanies recrystallization at 1800°F. However, it does so as a secondary effect and does not necessarily take place at lower temperatures. The structural similarity of this reaction to cellular precipitation in other systems indicates that lattice strain may also play a significant role during some cellular precipitation reactions. THERE have been numerous microstructural investigations of recrystallization in single-phase materials but two-phase systems have received much less attention. The second phase can either remain inert or be altered along with the matrix during recrystallization. If the second phase is an oxidelm3 or a relatively inert pre~ipitate,~, recrystallization is retarded when the interparticle spacing is less than 1 p. Prior to the onset of recrystallization, these materials show a well-polygonized substructure with the subgrain size limited by the interparticle spacing. Since recrystallization by the motion of preexisting grain boundaries6 is not observed, retardation has been related to particle pinning of the subboundaries. This pinning prevents coalescence&apos; or growth8 of subgrains to a critical size (formation of a high-angle boundary) necessary to initiate recrystallization. In a material such as a nickel-base superalloy both y matrix and y&apos; precipitate are altered by the recrystallization reaction. Haessner et al.&apos; studied the recrystallization of a cold-rolled Ni-Cr-A1 alloy by electron microscopy. The material was initially cold-rolled in the supersaturated condition. upon annealing at 750°C, immediate precipitation of 7&apos;occurred. Presence of this 7&apos; greatly retarded the onset of recrystallization which eventually took place by the development of randomly oriented, strain-free grains. The original •/ was dissolved at the recrystallization interface and reprecipitated as oriented, coherent par-tiles in the new grain. Recrystallization caused a refinement of .)&apos; particle size. Recently ~hillips&apos;&apos; investigated recrystallization of Ni-12.7 at. pct Al. Reduction by cold rolling presumably elongated the p&apos; precipitate into lamellae that remained coherent with the matrix. After recrystallization at 600" to 750°C, there was no unusual change in y&apos; particle size al- though there was a tendency toward clustering along the prior rolling direction at 750°C. Above 750°C, the recrystallized grains were generally free of precipitate. Studies in the somewhat analogous Cu-3.23 wt pct CO" and Cu-2 wt pct&apos;2 systems demonstrated that the coherent cobalt-rich fcc precipitate in these alloys obstructed softening, initiation, and completion of recrystallization. The precipitates were deformed into lam~llae during rolling and those of diameter less than 250A remained coherent. Recrystallization took place by the growth of new grains into the recovered or poly-gonized material. In the first study," both matrix and precipitate reoriented in the same manner upon passage of the recrystallization interface. There was no change in particle size or morphology. Tanner and ~ervi,~ on the other hand, observed that motion of the recrystallization fronts was strongly hindered by the pinning action of coherent precipitates in the deformed material. Particles in contact with a pinned boundary coarsened and coalesced leaving a denuded zone in the unrecrystallized region. When the number of pinning points was sufficiently reduced by coalescence, the boundary swept past these particles and through the denuded zone. The authors1&apos; considered this as a variation of discontinuous precipitation with both chemical driving force and deformation strain energy contributing to recrystallization. Preliminary observations by the present authors had revealed that recrystallization in Udimet 700, a nickel-base superalloy, occurred in an entirely different manner. Optical metallography showed that the recrystallized product formed as cellular colonies containing coarse y&apos; particles elongated in the direction of cell growth. In this investigation the structural features of this reaction were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE As-received I$-in. rounds of Udimet 700* were (wtpct) 18.4 15.2 4.95 4.42 3.43 0.06 0.031 0.14 Bal. solution-annealed for 4 hr at 2150" and then fast air-cooled. An initial y-~&apos; structure was established by a 4-hr age at 1825°F followed by a fast air,cool. Essentially the equilibrium volume fraction of ?&apos; at 1825°F is precipitated within 4 hr. Microstructural examination showed no measurable increase in the amount of precipitate after longer aging times. Deformation consisted of swaging to 52 pct RA with 6 pct reduction per pass at room temperature. To reduce the precipitation potential to a negligible amount, recrystallization anneals were conducted at 1800"~ (982"~). Microstructures were investigated by optical and transmission electron microscopy. The subject of Egypt, to use the words of perhaps the second of modern writers on the subject [Deodat. de Dolomieu, in Observations sur la Physique, etc., January, 1793, vol. xlii., pp. 41+, 108+; Abbe Rozier, J. A. Mongez, and J. C. Delametherie, Paris], is one which strongly excites our interest, and everything relating to it demands our respect. "Thus," he continues, "the Greeks appeared to the Romans," ..." thus Egypt appeared to the Greeks, and thus all three appear to us." This writer, in the three parts of the memoire given above, speaks of Norden as the modern pioneer of Egypt, and does not seem to have made original observations himself; nevertheless he seems to have rendered the same service to his authority that Playfair not very long afterward rendered Hutton. The limitations of a paper will permit little else than citations, but these are so numerous that, unless much compressed, they would supply a chapter of moderate size. THE electrolytic zinc plant of the American Zinc Co. of Illinois was described by Davidson&apos; in 1944. Since then, improvements as well as expansion of the plant facilities have been made. In order to increase the production of high grade zinc which was needed for war purposes, an expansion program designed to double the slab zinc capacity was started in 1942 and completed in March 1943. This expansion was propagated by a contract between the American Zinc Co. of Ill. and the Defense Plant Corp. The contract included the facilities of the Fairmont City, Ill., property of the American Zinc Co., where a suspension-type roaster with contact acid plant, cadmium distillation furnace, Waelz oxide and densifying plant, and horizontal retort furnaces were installed. The expanded Monsanto, Ill., plant and the additional facilities of&apos; the Fairmont plant were designed to integrate the metallurgical treatment of zinc concentrates for the production of special high grade zinc at Monsanto with the production of acid, cadmium, high grade zinc from furnace skimmings and the Waelz treatment of leach residue at Fairmont. In general, the original flowsheet was not changed, except for the addition of the filtering, drying and reclaiming of leach residue, and the treatment of purification cake for the recovery of copper, cadmium sponge, and zinc. Fig. 1 is a flow diagram of present operations. The original plant facilities, desi-gned for 50 tons daily production of slab zinc, had some units which were more than adequate. Therefore, in expanding the facilities to 100 tons per day, it was not necessary to double all operating components. Table I gives the comparison of the changes made in the unit operating components for the original facilities, 1941, the 1943 expansion, and the 1951 facilities. During the past 11 years a number of improvenients have been made resulting in: 1—an increase in slab production, 2—higher recoveries on the calcine treated, 3—better quality of slab zinc produced, 4—higher current efficiencies, and 5—less man hours Table I.
