The United States Coast and Geodetic Survey has announced the completion of a new outline map of the United States on the Lambert conformal conic projection, scale 1-5,000,000. This map is intended merely as a base to which may he added any kind of special information desired. The shore line is compiled from the most recent Coast and Geodetic Survey charts, state names and boundaries, principal rivers, capitals, and the largest cities in the different states are also embodied. The value of the new outline map on the Lambert projection can best be realized when it is stated that it shows that throughout the largest and most important part of the United States, that is, between latitudes 30 ½ and 49°, the maximum scale error is only 0.5 per cent. This amount of scale error of 0.5 per cent. is frequently less than the distortion due to the method of printing and to changes from the humidity of the air. Only in southernmost Florida and Texas does this projection attain its maximum error of 233 per cent. The map measures 25 inches by 39 inches and will be sold by the Government at 25 cents.

Messrs. Thomas & Cross, having leased from the Akron Cement Company from twelve to fifteen acres of abandoned cement-tunnels and chambers, for the purpose of propagating mushrooms for the market, commenced operations about a year ago, and are now beginning to furnish mushrooms in quantities to the local markets of Buffalo and Rochester. The quarries, or, more properly, the mines, of the Cement Company are located at Akron, Erie County, PIT. Y. The cement-rock occurs in a stratum about 71/2 to 8 feet in thickness, which is overlain by from 1.5 to 25 feet of limestone and flint-rock. There is a gentle rise from the opening of the tunnel inwards, giving a natural drainage and leaving the chambers comparatively dry. The roof is good and is supported by pillars and heavy timbers. The mushroom-beds are located about 300 feet from the opening of the tunnel, and are made in the form of mounds about 3 feet by 12 feet, at the base, and 24 feet high, giving to the chambers the appearance of a subterranean graveyard. With some uncertainty as to the type, rate and scope of adoption of air pollution control regulations, and with limited information on the availability of low-sulfur fuels, it is possible at best to make only a rough assessment of the impact of such regulations on coal. It is apparent from the following discussion that regulations of the type already effective or being considered, if adopted and enforced on a widespread basis over a short-term period and if substitute fuels were available, both quantitatively and economically, could result in a loss of more than one-half of coal's markets. Depending on the areal sequence of adoption of such regulations, some areas would be able to obtain limited amounts of low-sulfur coals. Others would not. Because of the usually greater distances from the large industrial coal consuming areas to new sources of coal supply, and because of the higher mine prices for low-sulfur coals, the delivered prices of such coals as might be available would be much higher than those for high-sulfur coals. A large and sudden demand for low-sulfur coals would exert further upward pressure on prices.

On the basis of the recommendation of Lovell, Vogel, and Wernick,&apos; Fry&apos;s reagent*2 was recently c) if decoration of the dislocations by carbon or nitrogen atoms is a factor in the etch pitting. Experiments were performed with samples of a commercial 1020 steel, a vacuum-melted iron (C - 10 to 15 ppm, 0 - 20 to 50 ppm, N < 2 ppm), both annealed 4 hr at 1100°C, and a zone-refined iron (C - 3 to 5 ppm, 0 - 10 ppm, N < 1 ppm ) in the as-cast condition. Saomple surfaces were prepared by grinding to 600A grit and electropolishing. Initially, effects of etching the steel with modifications of the basic Fry composition were examined. It was found that increasing the alcohol or HC1 concentratior~ retarded dislocation pitting; reducing the acid content promoted secondary pitting. Cooling the reagent and the sample did not improve the quality of the etch pits. Best results were obtained with freshly prepared reagent modified by increasing the CuC12 content to 15 g. This composition was used in subsequent experiments. Annealed samples were etched 10 to 15 sec; cold-worked samples —2 to 5 sec.

One of the most profound economic forces operating on a global scale is the movement of metals, ores, and concentrates from one country to another. A single shipment can pass through a series of ports and leave a flow map looking like some psychological nightmare. Statistical tracing often proves as difficult. How much did one given country send to another? Does the word ton represent the same thing to all people? What part did free ports and transshipment play? Where did the metal finally stop traveling and enter fabrication? The amount of mineral produced in the form of concentrate and as refined metal can be tracked down in the Minerals Yearbook of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Quantities imported by the U. S. can also be found in that publication. But the Yearbook will not tell what happened to the metals that did not find its way to the U. S. Even after a study of supplementary literature, such as the USBM Mineral Trade Notes and the publications of the International Tin Study Group and of other private and public organizations, the picture remains vague at best.

THE importance of topography to geology is so commonly underrated as to deserve to be pointed out again and again. The relation of topography to the different branches of geology may be seen best by a glance at them all. Geology is well understood to consist of the observation of facts about rocks as materials of the earth (geognosy ), and the explanation of those facts (geogeny). The facts to observe are: I. GEOMETRICAL, as (1) structure, including the dip and strike at different points, the size, shape, and position of basins and saddles; (2) vertical section, that is, the thickness of rock groups and of their parts ; (3) horizontal or geographical position. II. PHYSICAL, such as texture, whether sedimentary or crystalline ; and, if crystalline, whether granitic, porphyritic, amygdaloidal, globular, or concretionary; whether compact or granular; coarse or fine; pervious or impervious; hard or soft; firm or tender; with cleavage or without; massive or thin; the microscopic structure; also whether magnetic or not; soluble or insoluble; fusible or infusible; and the constituent minerals. One form of encouragement for the small copper mining sector in Chile has been the construction and management of custom mill facilities to process the ore. The paper describes an economic analysis framework for the evaluation of government custom milling opportunities. Feasible mill locations and capacities within a region are selected and the infrastructure and milling costs associated with each combination of location and capacity are assessed. For each combination, the economics of developing and operating known copper deposits in the region is evaluated, and an optimum cut-off grade and mine capacity is selected for the deposits which justify development. Since the total ore supply from mines in the region may exceed a particular custom mill capacity, mine development is scheduled to optimize the economics of the mill facility. Finally, the best custom mill location and capacity is selected on the basis of overall costs and benefits. A copper mining region in northern Chile is used to illustrate the application of the model. A mobile mill approach is examined and compared with the fixed location mill alternatives. Results are analyzed as a function of copper price.

The iron ores of Canada have attracted more or less attention in this country for a number of years ; and having had an opportunity this past summer to examine some of them, especially the magnetic ores, I have thought it might be of sufficient interest to the members of the Institute to put on record some of my observations. The region examined contains, for the most part, only the rocks of the Laurentian system. Much of it was originally covered with a dense growth of pine, which interfered with successful prospecting for ores. However, after the best of the timber had been cut off, fire generally got into the bush and cleared it up pretty well. This, besides making travelling about easier, exposed large surfaces of rock, and rendered the work of the prospector far more liable to be rewarded with success, while removing many of its hardships. The general appearance and productiveness of the land have, however, been far from improved by this process. It would be difficult to find a more desolate-appearing country than some of these pine woods after fire has been through them. The country examined may be, for convenience, divided into two

This paper reviews the chemistry of selenium and its compounds as it applies to the recovery of selenium from electrolytic copper refinery slimes. Based on this chemistry various processes for the extraction and recovery of selenium from refinery slimes are explained and developed. The optimum selenium technology processes is dependent upon many factors including copper refinery location, environmental and regulatory conditions, local markets for selenium or selenium chemicals, and other plant processes. For this reason there is no one best process but rather a variety of useful processes for winning selenium. Those which have demonstrated consistent utility in both ease of recovery and reliability are discussed in more detail. Recovery of selenium by Doré furnacing of slimes is the topic of a separate paper. The companies that have developed selenium extraction technology are not being cited in this paper for the following reasons: o Their current technology may be different o The actual inventor of a process is difficult to credit since many different organizations have pursued parallel inquiries in developing better processes. Finally, some selenium extraction processes have been omitted; not because they are unworthy of consideration but rather due to limitations of space.

The sands of Snake River, Idaho, have long been known to contain gold. They were worked by some of the first prospectors who came to Idaho, and on the banks still stand the ruins of camps abandoned for years. There are almost always prospectors searching for gold during the season of low water, and it is not an infrequent thing to find a miner of the old type actually panning the sand, or the prospect-hole which he has just left. There is more or less mystery about these miners and their methods of finding the spots where they work. They are always subjects of much speculation to the ordinary traveller. The rich discoveries are, for the best of reasons, concealed until the claims can be taken up. It is difficult to find a place where there are no prospects, but the " colors " are so very fine that they do not offer much inducement to enterprise. The California miner usually values a color at from 5 to 10 cents, often the latter; while on Snake River it would take 100 colors, or even more, to make that amount.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the coal flotation process and the interaction of the chemical (reagent) and hydrodynamic (machine, operational) variables as they affect yield, flotation of various sized particles, and sulfur and ash rejection. Coal flotation is found to follow a first order process with the coal floating much faster than either pyrite or ash. This circumstance may be used to achieve gangue rejection during flotation. When floated with MZBC, cresol, or pine oil frothers, coal floats in the size sequence: 108 pm ( - 65 mesh), 589 x 808 pm (88 x 65 mesh), and 1.17 mm x: 589 pm (14 x 18 mesh). However with a substantial amount of fuel oil collector, all particles tend to float roughly in proportion to their content in the feed. An increasing aeration rate was found to be the most important variable in increasing the coal flotation rate. This increase in flotation rate, unfortunately, is also accompanied by an increase in the flotation rate of the pyrite. The rejection of pyrite during coal flotation is best accomplished at low aeration rates, low frother concentrations, and low impeller speeds.

INTRODUCTION Fineness is one of the main characteristics of powders and this parameter is the object of several definitions based on criteria connected with their uses as well as their determination methods. In trying to obtain the best reaction surface, fineness is characterized by the determination of the specific surface, but in other cases, particle size analysis is used. These two main methods are not, in fact, entirely independent and their complementary nature provides information concerning the morphology of the particles. In the case of a product formed by isodimensional spheres, the relationship between the specific surface and the diameter is well known: [S = 6 spd] where p is the specific weight of the material and d the diameter of the spheres. With no monodimensional spheres, but rather a granulometric distribution whose occurrences follow a mathematical law (1), the relationship is more complicated. The relationship between the specific surface measured by gas adsorption and the data of the particle size analysis is much more difficult to predict in the case of asymmetric porous particles, whose particle size distribution curves do not correspond to a known statistical law.

The paper consists of two parts; one in which the author considers the laws of physical chemistry and physics that apply to liquid slag-metal systems and one in which he describes a practice based on the theoretical considerations. Such a paper is bound to contain controversial points and it is therefore your speaker&apos;s intention to present Mr. Ranque&apos;s side of the picture to the best of his ability without regard for any thoughts or criticisms of his own. RISING VELOCITIES OF INCLUSIONS Most nonmetallic inclusions have densities ranging from about 1.7 to s, while liquid steel has a density of about 7. Under these conditions, ferrostatic pressure should cause the inclusions, being lighter, to rise from the bath and be eliminated. This rising tendency is expressed by Stokes&apos; law, from which may be calculated the rising velocity of a spherical particle in a liquid medium whose density and viscosity are known.

In "Sorting Before Sizing " (a paper first announced at the Pittsburgh meeting, February, 1896, but delayed in preparation and now presented at the present meeting) it is shown that if slime-tables are to do their best work on slimes below 0.5 mm. or 0.05 inch in diameter, they must be carefully sorted or classified, and fed to a series of tables suitably adjusted to the different slime-sorts. The reason is that the coarser and finer slime-sorts require respectively different adjustments of the tables. Hence, if the two are fed together upon a table which has, as nearly as may be, average adjustments, fine galena, for example, will go into the tails, or coarse quartz into the heads, or both—losses which could have been largely prevented if the slime had been carefully sorted and each sort sent to its own slime-tables. As indicated in the paper just mentioned, the present tendency in this country is generally to do away with slime-sorting or "classification," and simply to take the overflow from the hydraulic classifier and divide it among the tables by means of

SINCE it was introduced in 1943 to recover chromite from Oregon beach sands, the Humphreys spiral concentrator has proved successful in several fields of wet mineral beneficiation. By the end of 1957, 9390 Humphreys spirals had been manufactured. Most of these are still in service. The spiral does not offer a panacea for all mineral dressing problems. Its proper application can best be determined by test work. Spirals present a unique advantage for the metallurgist to make tests in a full-size machine rather than a miniature model, without the risk involved in scaling up results. With only 10 to 40 lb of sample, the operator of a closed circuit test unit employing a full-size Humphreys spiral can conduct preliminary tests with full-scale loadings of 0.5 to 2.5 tph. With larger samples, from 300 to 500 lb, he can run longer multi-stage tests to obtain reliable data for the next step-pilot plant design. The manufacturer of the Humphreys spiral concentrator maintains a fully equipped ore dressing laboratory and by insisting on test work prior to sales has largely prevented misapplication of the spiral.

THE American Institute of Mining Engineers was organized in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by men who were primarily interested in anthracite. Its first meeting, at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in the Northern Anthracite field, on May 16, 1871, resulted from a call sent out by three outstanding men of the anthracite .industry: Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell, and Martin Coryell. The best known of these was Eckley B. Coxe, who was the manager of large hold¬ings operated by him and his family,. and who is remembered as the inventor of a special grate for burning very fine anthracite, known as the Coxe traveling grate, which is still very widely used. R. P. Rothwell was a well-known consulting engineer of the region, as was Martin Coryell, who was associated with another well-known anthracite family, the Pardees. There is no record of the discussions that resulted in this initial meeting, but it is safe to assume that the formation of the Institute was largely influenced, through appreciation by the founders, of the necessity for a free exchange of information covering the whole of the mining industry. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple compared to the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve the understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instances, more of an art than a science. In order to minimize the risk factors in the construction and operation of large scale slurry systems, studies are frequently conducted in pilot scale test loops such as the one at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute. The pilot scale projects are designed to provide the basic engineering data necessary to design slurry transport pipeline systems. Usually three slurry solid concentrations are pumped at various line velocities and optimum slurry densities and velocities are determined. Critical velocities, friction head losses, power requirements, and so forth, are also determined from measurements and calculations. Wear tests are also strongly recommended and anticipated pipe wear rates in inches per million tons of solids reported.

SMALL power-driven, toothed, cast-iron rolls were used first to break anthracite in 1844. Prior to that time, men with hammers, who stood on perforated cast-iron- plates, .broke the large lumps into commercial sizes. In order to convert run-of-mine into the various sizes required by the anthracite industry, about 20 million tons must be broken, annually, [ ] into smaller sizes. This phase of anthracite preparation is of major importance, because the degradation accompanying reduction in coal sizes should be kept at a minimum. The exclusive use of toothed rolls for that purpose indicates that comminution by rolls is the best solution of the problem. Many improvements have been made in tool design, but the most important was a reduction of the peripheral speed of the rolls from 1000 to 300 ft. per minute. The higher speed was based upon and approximated the velocity of a falling piece of coal when it entered the rolls. Exhaustive roll tests at the slower speed showed that the same size reduction could be affected with less degradation. THE methods that may be applied to the treatment of slurries and water, as these are related to practical coal-preparation problems, are concerned essentially with the movements of solids suspended in water. It is assumed that there are no fundamental differences between the principles involved in the treatment of coal slurries and the phenomena encountered in general mineral-dressing practice, and the latter are presented in some detail. Basic principles are correlated with present practice for both the anthracite and the bituminous coal. fields, and meth¬ods are discussed which are designed to utilize best all the material subjected to treatment and suggest a sound approach to the solution of problems relating to the return of clear water to process or to streams. In order to approach the practical phases of the subject with sufficient understanding of the basic principles, it is necessary to discuss two types of phenomena that are applicable. The first is flocculation and the second is sedimentation. Descriptive matter is given covering the various meth¬ods and types of equipment employed to conduct these operations, with emphasis on their application to water and coal-slurry treatment.

Mineral dressing research showed that iron concentrates of commercial quality could be produced from the Pea Ridge deposit near Sullivan, Mo. Magnetic separation and flotation, on a laboratory scale, yielded concentrates ranging from 60.0 to 71.4 pet Fe at recoveries of 89.9 to 97.6 pct. Early in 1957 St. Joseph Lead Co. announced discovery of three new centers of iron ore deposition in east central Missouri.&apos; The discovery resulted from exploratory drilling in the vicinity of a magnetic anomaly or high. A deep hole, drilled into the Pre-Cambrian porphyry to determine the cause of anomaly, penetrated a magnetite-rich deposit.&apos; The magnetic surveys that revealed the anomalies were begun by the Missouri Geological Survey in 1929 and were continued into the 1930&apos;s.3 At that time an area in Crawford County known as the Bourbon magnetic high was located. A second anomaly, similar in size and intensity, was discovered about six miles to the northeast in Franklin County in the vicinity of Sullivan. This area was not studied in detail until the early 1940&apos;s. To determine the cause of the anomalies, the USBM drilled four holes at the Bourbon site in 1943-1944.4 The most productive hole penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 127.5 ft. These zones contained magnetite in rhyo-lite porphyry at depths between 1600 and 2000 ft. Additional iron ore below 2000 ft was considered a possibility at the time. Some years later, the USGS, Missouri Geological Survey, St. Joseph Lead Co., and others cooperated in sponsoring an aeromagnetic survey of the Bourbon-Sullivan area which resulted in discovery of a third high, about eight miles distant at Pea Ridge. This deposit, with an estimated reserve of 50 to 100 million tons of iron ore, is considered the main find, although other orebodies in the same general area are of definite interest.&apos; When this discovery was announced, St. Joseph Lead also revealed plans to exploit the deposit jointly with Bethlehem Steel Co. A new corporation, Meramec Mining Co., was established, and 1962 was set as the target date for completing physical plant.2 Annual production goals of 2 million tons of beneficiated and pelletized iron ore were proposed. Preparation of the site for shaft sinking was begun in June 1957. Orebody and Character of Samples: Drilling to date has established the Pea Ridge orebody as a crescent-shaped pipe about 300 ft wide. Some drillholes were bottomed at 2800 ft in very good iron ore.6 he orebody is predominantly magnetite, although hematite and a mixture of hematite and magnetite occur in the upper areas and peripheral walls. Drillhole cores representing ore from different areas and depths of mineralization were grouped into composites for testing. These composites consisted of: 1) medium grade mixed hematite and magnetite, 2) high grade mixed hematite and magnetite, and 3) high grade magnetite. The medium grade ore came from three holes with depths of i350 to 1900 ft. The high grade mixed hematite and magnetite cores came from the 1790 to 2812-ft interval of one hole. Partial chemical analyses of the three samples, given in Table 1, reveal that all are excessively high in phosphorus and sulfur, and sample 1 is
