In recent years, there is an increasing demand on manganese consumption which stems from the important role of manganese in carbon steel production. And the growing need for manganese ores makes the beneficiation of low-grade manganese ores more economical. In this study, the characterization and beneficiation studies were carried out to propose a flow sheet for typical low-grade Turkish manganese ores. For this aim, different gravity separation methods were applied. According to the mineralogical analysis, the major mineral phases are pyrolusite (MnO2) and psilomelane (MnO2) while the major gangue mineral is radiolarite. Gravity separation tests were accomplished by using jigs, shaking table, MGS (Multi Gravity Separator) and in order to obtain products with high Mn ratio, high intensity magnetic separation was also performed. As a result, different combinations of flow sheets were utilized and a concentrate assaying 56.5% Mn with 85 % recovery was obtained.

Electrical trailing cables are frequently damaged in usage, especially on continuous minors, and because of their weight and damaged condition present a safety hazard to personnel required to handle them. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and FMC Corporation signed Contract No. HO 122011 in August 1971. One of the contract tasks was to study the feasibility of techniques to improve trailing cable support and handling of power cables on underground coal mine machinery and to design a cable-handling device for a continuous mining machine. This report presents the results of the feasibility study, describes the design for a proposed cable handling device and concludes with a recommendation for future action to construct a test rig to evaluate the cable reel system.

Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1. This report covers the study of the feasibility of using a hand-held infrared viewer as a methane indicator to observe methane gas at the face of an underground coal mine. The objective of this program was the development of a hand-held device to remotely detect the presence of concentrations of methane gas in underground coal mines. Convenient "mapping" of methane from a remote location would allow rapid and safe corrective procedures for working personnel. Modified commercially available equipment was evaluated both in the laboratory and in a working mine. Although readings were obtained and the general principle of operation demonstrated, the power levels necessary, and protective enclosures required, would raise the weight of the instrument beyond practical limits of portability. Based on currently available technology, it is the conclusion of the investigations that a practical, portable, hand-held visual methane indicator is beyond the state-of-the-art. The recommendation was, therefore, made that work be suspended, and the results and data compiled and presented in a final program report.

Ground freezing has been used for over 100 years to provide shoring and ground water cutoffs for hundreds of projects worldwide, including drilled shafts, tunnels and cofferdams. Typically, these cases involved difficult soil/water problems where ground freezing was likely the only solution. This paper discusses a recent ground freezing project where a frozen soil wall was used for a more conventional problem. A 4-foot-thick frozen soil wall was used to provide shoring and groundwater cutoff for a 20-foot-deep excavation during construction of a cast-in-place concrete storm water detention vault. The site is located along the northbound on-ramp to I405 from westbound SR522 in Woodinville, Washington. The frozen soil wall was successfully formed in soils consisting of till fill over soft organic silt and loose saturated sand in about 3 weeks. The depth to ground water varied from about 4 to 8 feet over the site. The unfrozen soil inside the frozen soil wall was excavated vertically to the frozen soil boundary. The vertical excavation remained open for approximately 2 months with no dewatering required. On one side, fully-loaded dump trucks and other construction equipment operated within 6 feet of the wall face with zero wall movement. This paper addresses the construction issues related to installation and operation of ground freezing shoring. The overall wall performance of the frozen soil wall as well as basic geotechnical design issues are also discussed.

Introduction Since the last decade the iron ore processing industry has undergone drastic changes from supplying screened and natural ores to manufacturing tailored concentrates and pellets. Increased need for the beneficiation of lower grade iron ore deposits and the increased demand for higher grade concentrates necessitate finer grinding of iron ores before concentration. The normal filtration stations used in the past are experiencing difficulties in dewatering the finely ground concentrates to moisture levels acceptable for balling. In addition to finer grinding, applications of complex beneficiation techniques has decreased the filterability of the concentrates and create problems in filtration of iron ore concentrates. An overview of the filtration literature indicates there are few research reports on the dewatering of iron ore concentrate slurries. There exists a need to understand the principles and mechanisms involved in the filtration of iron ore concentrate slurries with a goal of developing more efficient filtration techniques. This paper presents the results from the first phase of our research program that included the development of a reproducible benchscale filtration technique and the investigation of the filtration behavior of eight iron ore concentrates.

DISCUSSIONS of trade and commerce are generally more comprehensive today than in the past; the problems are approached with a vision unrestricted by national boundaries, and broad enough to comprise the entire world. The extent to which the limited viewpoint that has characterized past ages is yielding to an economy of world-wide scope is exemplified by the Atlantic Charter which blazes a trail in the direction of trade principles that aim to preserve the interest of each individual country in the commonwealth of nations. Its fourth article promulgated the principle that all nations should have access on equal terms to the trade and to the raw materials of the world which may be needed for their economic prosperity. Future developments in reciprocal international trade may have some effect upon the flow of nonmetallic minerals but such effects are not likely to be great because tariffs and trade policies have not affected that flow profoundly in the past. Nevertheless conditions may change and new problems may arise demanding important decisions. Sudden changes are not to be expected, but rather an orderly evolution in which national interests will merit due consideration in establishing broader policies.

The Harris No. 1 Mine, located in Boone County, WV, has been longwalling the Eagle Coalbed for over 30 years. Harris has experienced numerous interactions associated with the extensive room-and-pillar and longwall mining operations which have been conducted in the overlying No. 2 Gas Coalbed. The problems have included roof falls, excessive rib sloughage, and gateroad and bleeder entry closure. A detailed evaluation of the multiple seam experiences at Harris No. 1 Mine was conducted as part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) nation-wide multiple seam mining case history data base. One observation from the Harris gateroad case histories was that smaller, critically loaded, upper seam pillars seemed to cause more severe ground conditions than did wider pillars. The LaModel program was used to investigate this supposition, and the results confirmed that "critical" sized pillars do transmit the highest amounts of stress to adjacent seams. In addition, the data suggest that the probability of a major multiple seam mining interaction increases when the depth of cover is 1,000 ft or greater and when the Eagle seam pillars have a Analysis of Longwall Pillar stability factor less than 1.50.

Product designed characteristics like reliability and maintainability affect maintenance cost, service performance, and therefore product support strategy must be defined during design stage in terms of these two dimensions. Furthermore product support and service delivery strategy has considerable influence on the total life cycle cost and the economic viability of industrial systems/products. he paper presents a concept for the development of service delivery strategy for industrial products with a special reference to mining systems. In this paper we emphasize that the strategy for product support should not be centred only on ‘product’ but it should also take into account the service delivery capability of the manufacturers/suppliers and users service organization, users competence and capability, product use location, logistics and infrastructures, etc., to arrive at the best performance and economic results. Such strategy should invariably include services supporting the client apart from considering services supporting the product. The discussion in the paper is based on the experiences from the manufacturing industry engaged in manufacturing of mining systems and the observed trends in technology and management of operation and maintenance of mining systems. The petrographer engaged in examining the products resulting from the beneficiation of ores, and rock minerals is constantly required to develop new means acid methods of assaying microscopically the results of such operations. From time to time investigators have published descriptions of apparatus that have aided in solving problems in processes of physical separation. Thus, in 1919, Coghill and Bonardi 3/ published a paper covering the application of the binocular microscope and camera lucida to the microscopic analysis of pulverized ores. Similar work has been published by Schneiderhohn 4/ Schwartz 5/, and Head and his associates 6/, 7/, 8/. The present paper goes further and considers application of the polarizing comparison-microscope to problems directly concerned with mineral dressing where it is desirable to compare analogous products, and in addition it suggests new uses in various related fields. This work was conducted under the cooperative agreements of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama.

CIVILIZATION&apos;S PROGRESS, which has multiplied man&apos;s comforts, conveniences, a n d happiness, is based upon the extensive employment of natural minerals and sources of energy. Mineral resources are basic factors in modern economic development, machine industry, international trade and world power. A survey of mineral consumption shows that the United States leads the world in the production and consumption of energy materials, of metals, and of the large and diverse array of earth materials that fall in the nonmetallic mineral group. The use of nonrnetallic minerals exceeded both the metals and the fuels in the long period before the industrial age, but it is only in the last two decades that consumption of non- metals has kept pace with and approximated in value the output of metals. Although the data of production in the first half of the last century are meager and fragmentary, the record of the past fifty years-the period of most rapid growth-is available, and reveals an astounding growth.

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API&apos;s intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960&apos;s. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. This report describes a program to evaluate the feasibility of determining roof features which occur in United States coal mines from changes in bolting machine drilling parameters. The ultimate purpose of this effort is the development of an instrumented roof bolting machine which can detect hazardous roof conditions and/or indicate when the existing roof control plan is inadequate. A survey of hazardous conditions occurring in United States coal mines is included, along with the slang expressions for these conditions, and their relative degree of hazard. Specific machine parameters are identified for detecting the specific roof conditions. Measurement concepts are proposed using readily available instrumentation in most cases. Various systems are evaluated and tradeoffs presented. An implementation plan is proposed for developing a prototype system and using it in an operating coal mine.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype nonincendive explosive rock-breaker charge that can be fired unconfined in underground bituminous coal mines without the danger of igniting a flammable atmosphere that might be present. At present, unconfined shooting in underground coal mines is prohibited, but there are situations where the use of such shots would yield an overall improvement in safety. The charge consists of l-1/2 lb of permissible water gel explosive in the form of a short cylinder 7 inches in diameter and 7/8 inches high, surrounded by a l/2-inch-thick layer of damp salt, and encased in latex rubber reinforced with cheese cloth. The latex rubber housing provides a charge package that is strong enough to resist rough handling yet is pliable enough to conform to an irregular stone surface. A charge of this shape was found to be more effective at breaking rock than charges with lined or unlined cavities. Incendivity tests in a gallery have shown that the prototype charge will not ignite a flammable methane-air atmosphere when fired. Rock- breaking tests made with limestone boulders indicate that the charge will satisfactorily break stone slabs weighing 1 to 2 tons, and that two or more charges might be effective for slabs weighing up to 10 tons. In cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), a test protocol for the certification of these charges as "permissible" for use in flammable atmospheres is being developed.

Poorly designed sampling protocols generally result in high project risk by artificially increasing grade variability (ie the nugget effect). Sample collection, preparation and assay protocols that suit the ore type, together with QA/QC systems, will reduce this risk. All reporting codes (eg JORC, 2004) require the Competent Person to consider the quality and implication of sampling and assaying programs. High sampling errors beget higher project uncertainty; despite this fact, sampling does not receive the attention it deserves. The case studies presented show that many sampling issues frequently go unrecognised or unaddressed, resulting in poor project decisions during exploration through to feasibility and production. The overall conclusion is that correct sampling is critical to mining project success and that there is often a need for its optimisation.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the mineral matter content of 38 American coals using X-ray fluorescence. Measurements of the Ka intensity for magnesium, aluminum, silicon, sulfur, calcium, and iron permit the determination of those elements as well as an indirect determination of the ash con-tent of the coals. The percentage of each of the six elements was corrected for absorption by all six elements as well as by hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. It made little difference whether the values used for hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen were obtained from chemical analysis or whether average values for all coals were used. In all cases, oxygen was obtained by difference. The correction for absorption by all these elements involved the inversion of a 6 X 6 matrix and was performed by computer. Assuming that the elements magnesium, aluminum, silicon, calcium, and iron were present in the ash as oxides, the quantity of ash was determined. The results for the mineral elements as well as for ash and oxygen were in good agreement with chemical results. Particle size was found to have a significant effect on fluorescence intensities. A study of size effects was made for pyrite particles, since the sulfur content of coals is of particular interest. Theoretical equations were derived and verified relating the intensity to particle size. It was found that the coal samples must be ground to less than 2 microns. Sulfur appears in several forms in coal, and the effect of sulfur form on intensity was investigated. It was found that the Ka intensity was independent of sulfur form but the Kß intensity varied with the type of sulfur. Thus, the Ka intensity was used for determination of the quantity of sulfur present. Utilization of the sulfur KB intensity did not permit a determination of the proportions of sulfur forms present in coal. However, for synthetic mixtures of cystine and pyrite in carbon black, measurement of sulfur Ka and Kß permit determination of each constituents from measurements of sulfur intensities alone.

Common offset and refraction seismic data have been collected over four longwall panels at two different locations within West Virginia. Surveys prior, during and after mining were made in both areas. The velocity of seismic wave propagation in the overburden rocks is observed to decrease in response to panel emplacement. Variations in the magnitude of this reduction, apparent as an additional first arrival time delay in the after mining common offset surveys, do not appear to correlate directly to the amount of subsidence that has occurred. Velocity reduction and signal absorption zones are also produced in the cover beyond the panel face over the adjacent unmined areas. Signal absorption and velocity reduction zones have also been observed over room and pillar entry areas between mined panels. Velocity reduction zones have been- observed beyond the panel face in both shallow and deep mines, but the signal absorption zone has not been observed over the deeper mine. Changes in the compressional wave velocities of the cover rocks are associated with changes in their elastic moduli. Differences between borehole derived and surface seismic derived interval velocities, are related to differences in the properties of the bulk volume sampled by each method.

This report describes economic mining feasibility studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to estimate mining costs in the Porcupine mining area of the Juneau Mining District, southeastern Alaska. Investigations were conducted on the economics of three mineral deposit types: 1) massive sulfide deposits containing zinc, copper, and silver, 2) vein gold, and 3)disseminated gold. Cost estimates were developed using the Bureau of mines Cost Estimating S,-stem. Discounted cash flow rates of return were calculated using the Bureau of Mines MINSIM (mining simulation) computer program. Three sets of metal prices were used in the study based on recent historical price information. Underground longhole stope mining of a massive sulfide deposit containing 25 pct zinc. 1 pct copper, and 63.6 g/mt silver was found to be economic at high metal prices at a quantity of 13,200,000 mt ore. Cut-and-fill mining of a 26,400,000 mt massive sulfide deposit was found to be economic at medium metal prices. Open pit mining of a similar deposit was found to he economic at medium metal prices and 26,400,000 mt ore, or at high metal prices and 6,600,000 mt ore. Underground mining of a vein gold deposit was found to be economic at a grade of 17.1 g/mt medium metal prices and 1,320,000 mt ore. Open pit mining of a disseminated gold deposit was found to be economic at a grade of 1.71 g/mt medium metal prices and a quantity of 39,600,000 mt ore.

An investigation was conducted to study possible sources of Utah refractory and structural clays that could be used for the manufacture of refractories and light or buff burning heavy-clay products. A field study was made and the clay samples tested to determine their firing characteristics. Results of the Bureau&apos;s work indicate many small noncommercial deposits of hypogenic clay occur in igneous rocks. Commercial hypogenic deposits are mostly halloysite clay developed by hydrothermal replacement of limestone. The high firing shrinkage of halloysite precludes its use as a refractory, however, halloysite produced at the Dragon Mine south of Eureka, is used for making oil catalysts. Clays and shales suitable for low heat duty refractory products are found in the Manning Canyon shale, in shales associated with coal bearing rocks, and in the Dakota formation. Some of the clays from the Dakota formation are also suitable for high-duty refractory products.
