In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

Detrital gold in the Greymouth-Hokitika area has been won from: (a) gravel of the Pliocene Old Man Group, (b) glacial outwash gravel of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (c) raised shoreline deposits of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (d) deposits resulting from the erosion of (a) to (c). The source of the gold was probably widely dispersed quartz veins in great thicknesses of greywacke and low-grade schist eroded from east of the Alpine Fault, with a contribution from veins in Greenland Group greywacke in the south. At times of high interglacial and post-glacial sea level, gold was concentrated along marine shorelines, and subsequent progressive uplift has resulted in a set of sub-parallel beach leads up to 100 m above present sea level. During glaciations, gold was concentrated in outwash streams close to moraines, especially where ice forming one moraine penetrated and destroyed an older one. Worked deposits in the Old Man Group may also be associated with glaciation. Apart from workings that are essentially extensions of past workings, significant new prospects may depend on inferences as to where prospective deposits are completely obscured by younger ones.

This study reviews the sulfur and suliuric acid industries in Eastern United States with emphasis on patterns of consumption and marketing. Output of sulfur in the East is relatively small, and most of the area's sulfur requirements are met by gulf coast Frasch sulfur. Over the long ten recovered elemental sulfur from sour natural gas and petroleum may become the East's major source of sulfur. In 1958 sulfuric acid manufacture consumed over 80 percent of the area's sulfur requirements. The leading uses for sulfuric acid were the manufacture of superphosphates and chemicals. Over the years, unit requirements for sulfur and acid in many major markets have been reduced through improved technology, but new markets always have been developed to keep the industry vital and growing.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the flow of natural gas through high-pressure pipe lines. This report deals with that part of the study involving the design off pipe-line systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are referred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. Mineral raw materials, labor, capital, and technology form the basis of industrial production. The augmentation of one or all of the elements--labor, capital, and technology--will result in industrial growth. Thus, an increase in the labor force would increase output. A similar result would be achieved by expanding capital investment and supplying labor with more equipment. Finally, industrial growth can be achieved by introducing more productive methods and techniques born of technological advancement. The Soviet Union has employed these elements in many patterns to catapult from an agricultural to an industrial economy in four decades. The early history of the Soviet Union was marked by limited capital and borrowed technology, forcing the Soviets to concentrate on an abundant labor reserve to support the industrial program. The source of this reserve was the rural population. In [1928], 80 percent of the working population was employed in agriculture. This figure dropped to 43 percent by 1956, whereas industrial employment in the same period increased from 8 to 31 percent.3/

The majority of SAG and ball mill design methodologies are applied using a single design value for mill selection, such as the 80th percentile ball mill work index or SMC value. Inherent in the selection of this design value is a desire for the mill to accommodate unfavourable, but not absolute worst case, feed conditions. It has been observed in numerous “post-mortems” of unsuccessful designs and also in many optimisation studies, that the selection of the design value has been poor. Statistical analysis of testwork data sets shows that inherent variability in the data can, by itself, lead to design errors. Metallurgical testing is an attempt to measure the characteristics of millions of tonnes of ore using only a few kilograms of sample. In this paper some realistic but synthetic test work data sets are used to explore old and new methods of defining the design envelope and subsequently selecting a reliable point. The aim of the paper is to provide practitioners with tools that reveal the adequacy (or otherwise) of metallurgical test programs intended to support various levels of project design. It also provide guidance as to how it is possible to statistically justify a comparatively high design point in the absence of adequate test data.CITATION:David, D, 2015. The United States Bureau of Mines has made a study of roof control in 68 mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. In making these studies, much information was also obtained on various exact methods of development and pillar extraction as practiced by this large group of mines. It is proposed in this paper to describe these methods, by which this group of mines in 1931, a year of reduced industrial activity, produced 28,123,000 tons of bituminous coal - 7.4 percent of the national production for the same year and an amount equal to the combined production of the coal mired in the States of Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The results of these studies, insofar as they pertain to the prevention of injuries from falls of roof, have been published by the Bureau of Mines. In this paper only a few mines typical of each system will be described; however, should the reader be interested in other details with respect to these mines, he may refer to the following publications: T.P. 522, 1932, 43 pp. Falls of roof and coal in mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. Cyclic behaviour of axially loaded piles has been an issue since studies revealed that the capability to transfer skin friction into the ground is highly depending on the level and the number of load cycles the pile is subjected. It has been shown that degradation of skin friction due to axial cyclic loading leads to accumulating displacements and a severe reduction in pile capacity. In Germany the DIN 1054 as well as the Recommendations of the Working Group 2.1 ?Piles? of the German Geotechnical Society (EA-Pfähle) require the consideration of cyclic loading for the assessment of both the displacements and the capacity. Up to now no broadly accepted design method exists, which enables the engineer to give a reliable judgement on the pile capacity under axial cyclic loading and the displacements respectively. Instead numerous design charts make it possible to distinguish between stable and instable loading levels in order to ensure a design on the safe side. A newly developed design approach based on engineering models is presented which delivers a calculation algorithm for the remaining axial pile capacity after a defined number of load cycles to allow for the analysis of stability of the foundation. Furthermore the computation of accumulating displacements is made possible. The results are verified with pile load tests undertaken at Dunkirk, France and showed that the axial capacity after cyclic loading calculated with the newly developed design approach predicts actual capacity with an accuracy of ±20%.

In the U.S., flexible metal pipe culverts are designed by ring compression theory because the pipes are capable of deflecting and deriving side support from surrounding ground. For economy, tunnel liners are often designed as flexible structures that depend on the lateral pressure of the surrounding ground to maintain stability. In this paper, simple formulas are presented to determine the maximum deflection a concrete tunnel liner may assume and the ring compressive strength of the deflected liner. A tunnel can then be constructed to work within these limits. Similar techniques may be used to design concrete pipes.

The spatial and temporal evolution from the porphyry to high-sulphidation epithermal environment can be assessed by integrating new results on such deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Hedenquist et al, 1998) with past studies of plutonic and porphyry systems (Dilles and Proffett, 1995; Cline, 1995; Shinohara and Hedenquist, 1997; Hedenquist and Richards, 1998). Some time ago, Sillitoe (1973) argued for the nature of the tops and bottoms of porphyry deposits. He concluded that epithermal deposits may form over the tops of some porphyry systems. We can now conclude more confidently what the tops and bottoms of many high-sulphidation ore deposits appeared like while active (Arribas, 1995; Hedenquist, 1995). In addition, we better understand the nature of the zonation of high-sulphidation epithermal systems from the intrusive to surficial environment (Sillitoe, 1999), and how these two styles of ore deposit are related. Geological and geochemical evidence clearly indicates a continuum between these two ore environments. This improved understanding of genesis allows more efficient exploration for these deposits. There are many examples of spatially associated porphyry and epithermal ore deposits. A genetic connection has been suggested by some, and argued against by others. Nowhere is this spatial association better seen than in northern Luzon, Philippines, where the Lepanto high-sulphidation epithermal Cu-Au deposit overlies the Far Southeast (FSE) porphyry Cu-Au resource (Figure 1). Together these mineralised bodies contain a resource of >3.8 M tonnes Cu and >550 tonnes Au. Lepanto was largely mined out in early-1997. Post-war production until 1995 was 0.73 Mt Cu, 115 t Au and 393 t Ag at an average grade of 2.2 per cent Cu, 3.5 g/t Au and 11 g/t Ag. The recent discovery of the adjacent Victoria low-sulphidation quartz-Au-base metal vein deposit, with a resource of >68 tonnes Au (Cuison et al, 1998), illustrates the variety and abundance of mineralisation in the Mankayan district. This district also hosts the Guinaoang porphyry Cu-Au deposit (Sillitoe and Angeles, 1985) and other epithermal vein occurrences (Figure 1). This brief summary reviews the results recently published on the Lepanto-FSE deposits (Arribas et al, 1995; Mancano and Campbell, 1995; Claveria, 1998; Hedenquist et al, 1998), and stresses the evidence for coupling of mineralisation between the porphyry and high-sulphidation epithermal environments.

Introduction The domestic copper industry has suffered for some time from declining ore grades; rising costs associated with conventional mining, milling, smelting and refining; tightening environmental restrictions; and shrinking markets due to materials substitution. Ore grade depletion is a major problem. It is illustrated by the decline in average copper yield shown in Fig. 1. From 1979, copper grade has dropped 60%, lowering yields from 1.2% to 0.49% (Sousa, 1981). The US copper industry is taking drastic measures to enhance its competitive posture and to guarantee its future worldwide position. In a sense, this involves a general restructuring of the processing philosophy of US copper producers. Judging from recent trends, this restructuring relates to the application of solution mining techniques to the treatment of copper ores and low grade waste material. Recovering copper by leaching techniques has been practiced for centuries. As early as the mid-16th century, some Hungarian copper mines were recycling copper bearing leach solutions through waste heaps (Nash, 1912). In the US, recovering copper from dilute mine waters has been carried out for more than 100 years. There are, however, certain technical innovations that have elevated the importance of solution mining as a process for copper recovery. These include: • Advances in solvent extract-electrowinning (SX-EW); • Developments in acid and acid ferric cure processes for oxide and mixed oxide sulfide ores; • Improvements in heap and dump construction; and • Advances in in situ leaching technology. Generally, solution mining enjoys certain intrinsic advantages over conventional mining and milling. Compared to conventional milling, the combined capital and operating costs of leaching facilities are normally lower, start-up times are faster, and the leaching operation usually has less impact on the environment. Furthermore, solution mining represents an expedient way of extracting metals from small shallow deposits, and is particularly suited to the treatment of low grade sources. And, in the case of waste dump leaching, there is a tremendous resource in-place that has the mining cost already off the books. This paper updates current US copper solution mining trends. Solution mining systems Schlitt (1980) summarized the characteristics of the principle leach systems in the US. He pointed out that the wide variations in copper deposits make solution mining a more site-specific activity than conventional mining and milling. Heap leaching is usually selected for moderate to high grade ores having a copper mineralization that is amenable to acid leaching (oxides, silicates and certain sulfides). Higher grade ores mined specifically for heap leaching are usually treated to optimize copper extraction, therefore, crushing and some pretreatment (acid curing) may be justified. On the other hand, dump leaching practice usually involves leaching low grade waste rock placed on large dumps as dictated by topography and haulage costs. Mine waste is therefore treated in an uncrushed run-of-mine condition. Finally, in situ leaching is appropriate for either very deep ore bodies or for recovering copper from low grade rock left behind in abandoned pit walls, stopes, and subsidence zones from earlier mining activities. True in-situ solution mining should be defined as the leaching of ore in its original geologic setting. Heap leaching Heap leaching has a long history as a hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery. The methodology of heap leaching established at Rio Tinto in Spain more than 300 years ago is basically the same as that used today. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine those factors that are significant in affecting the velocity of flames propagating along the boundary separating gaseous fuel and air. In addition the aerodynamic motion of the gases in the vicinity of such interfacial flames was delineated. Parameters in the study included flammable zone thickness, flammable zone concentration of gradient, fuel type, and position of the flame relative to various environmental surfaces. Of all these factors, the flammable zone thickness and burning velocity of the stoichiometric mixture were found to have the most significant effect on the flame speed. Notion of the gases in the vicinity of the interfacial flames was examined by particle track and interferometric techniques. The relative velocity of the interfacial flame with respect to the unburned gas on the central streamline was found to equal the burning velocity of a stoichiometric homogeneous fuel-air mixture. In addition, it was observed that the composition of the lean fuel-air mixture at the boundary of the combustion zone appears to be less than that defined as the fuel's lower flammable limit.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated two different conventionallongwall gate entry systems in the Southern Appalachian Basin, where mining and geologic conditions are conducive for coal pillar bumps. These gate entry systems were in a coal mine located in the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed under approximately 2,000 ft of overburden and a massive quartzite sandstone member, and both employed a center abutment pillar flanked by yield pillars. The 8O-ft-square tailgate abutment pillars within the first study area began bumping 500 ft in advance of mining. This was accompanied by face bumps on the tailgate corner of the longwall face. The 120-by 180-ft tailgate abutment pillars within the second study area did not begin to bump until mining was approximately 100 ft past. Coalbed stress change and abutment pillar dilation data demonstrated that a 15-ft-wide perimeter of yielded coal surrounded a highly stressed core in both sizes of abutment pillars. The 62 pet more core area per foot of gate entry in the larger abutment pillars prevented excessive load transfer to the corner of the tailgate panel and eliminated the face bumps experienced with the original gate entry design.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. J0100038, "Demonstration of Noise Control Techniques for the Crushing and Screening of Nonmetallic Minerals." The objectives of the program were to: a. Identify the prevalent sources of crushing and screening noise in portable and stationary plants b. Design retrofit noise control treatments for those sources c. Field test control treatments under actual operating conditions. A census of the nonmetallic industry was performed to determine the number and types of crushing and screening equipment. Based on the census, eight plants were selected and surveyed to assess the variety of noise sources, determine the worker noise exposure to those sources, and to identify possible constraints that had to be considered in designing and installing the retrofit controls. Three plants were selected from those surveyed and retrofit noise control treatments were designed, including: a. A primary crusher operator control booth b. Screen decks made of resilient cloth c. Screen feedbox impact pads d. Rubber feed plate for secondary crusher e. Rubber feed chute linings for secondary crusher f. Noise attenuating curtain for secondary crusher. A new primary crusher control booth was installed at one plant, and the operator noise levels were reduced from 97 dBA to 78 dBA. Screen noise at the two secondary crushing plants was reduced by 3 dBA to 7 dBA; crusher noise was reduced by 5 dBA at one of these two plants. Noise levels at normal outside operator and cleanup locations were reduced by 4 dBA to 7 dBA at one secondary plant, but operator/cleanup noise levels were not significantly reduced in the second plant due to rapid wear of installed materials. At one of the two secondary plants the retrofit noise control materials displayed excellent wear characteristics. The rapid wear of retrofit materials at the second plant was due to improper materials being supplied and changing circuit conditions.
