Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) accepted written comments until July 23, 1976, and held an informal hearing on August 24, 1976, to receive oral testimony regarding an economic and inflation impact statement prepared by OSHA on the proposed standard for occupational exposure to inorganic arsenic. These written and oral submissions were to be used in conjunction with information supplied at 1975 hearings to promulgate emission standards. An in-depth study for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assembled and interpreted comprehensive information on arsenic and its compounds and the effects of these substances on people, animals, and plants.2 Another study for EPA assessed the role of arsenic and its compounds in the environment and in the economy of the United States and evaluated the need for and the projected effect of controlling its production, use, dissipation, and emission.3

Rock deformational structures in a deep mine were analyzed by petrofabric techniques to learn (1) the relative magnitude and direction of the principal stresses involved in tectonic deformations prior to mining, (2) the preferred orientation of rock planar discontinuities which define rock anistropy prior to mining, and (3) the relationship of mining-induced rock failure to inherent rock stresses and inherent rock anisotropy. Rock fabric elements used for petrofabric analysis consisted of bedding planes, faults, joints, fractures, foliation, sericite plane (001), quartz axis [0001], quartz deformation lamellae, and microfractures. Structures and structural symmetries from different areas within the mine and from different scales of observation were compared to learn the nature of rock anisotropy and the orientation of the principal stresses defined by rock deformations. Analysis of such fabric as regional and macroscopic faults, b-c joints, quartz [0001], sericite (001), and microfractures, indicate that during the epochs of tectonic deformation, the maximum and minimum principal stresses were horizontally oriented and acted along northwest and northeast axes, respectively. This condition of regional stress appears to have continued during folding and the associated period of faulting. The most recent tectonic deformation represents a rotation of the minimum principal stresses into a vertical position, as shown by the development of a tensile joint system, quartz deformation lamellae, and microfractures. Good interscale correlation and statistical homogeneity of tectonic fabric indicate a stress field homogeneity in this area during tectonic deformation. Rock physical anisotropy is genetically associated with tectonic fabric and consists of preferentially oriented planar discontinuities intersecting along a nearly vertical axis. The mining-induced deformations were correlated with the inherent rock anisotropy which either directly controls or greatly affects their development. This phase of rock deformation shows a greater degree of stress field heterogeneity than was the case with tectonic deformations This is explained as a result of nonconfinement afforded by underground openings and the increase in ground stresses due to mining activity"

The Alimak mining method was introduced at the David Bell mine in 1998 to extract an otherwise uneconomic and inaccessible reserve. The success associated with the extraction of these reserves led to major expansion of the method. To date, results have been extremely positive in terms of grade control, reduced dilution, stope recoveries, productivities and mining costs. It is hoped that through further development of the method at David Bell mine we will continue to see positive results in these areas and be able to increase mineable reserves to include proven resources that do not currently meet the criteria of our current stoping plan.

After the global financial crisis of 2008, African mining is entering anew phase of development. The rapid withdrawal of emerging market funding from the critical exploration and development industries provided a hiatus in funding, a gap which was quickly filled by Chinese and other Asian investors. While the continent is still economically dependent on its extractive industries, the prevalence of Dutch Disease has undermined Africa?s ability to benefit fully from its mining, oil, and gas industries. While the extractive industries are closely related to many of the more fragile and failed states in Africa, it is equally true that the strongest states in Africa have mining-based economies. This paper explores the possible linkages between mining, strong and weak political economies, and poverty in Africa. It draws the conclusion that neither Dutch Disease nor Resource Course is a given in resource-endowed countries, and that it can be avoided if the mining economies in these countries are actively integrated into their respective broader economies and used to foster economic diversification. The author asserts that given the capacity constraints of many African governments, it is contingent on mining companies to become integrally involved in catalysing diversification around their infrastructure and supply chains.

INTRODUCTION A mine's power system represents the driving force behind all of the extraction and auxiliary operations, because the production and transportation of mined material and the operation of equipment, such as fans and pumps, are all dependent upon a power source. Once, compressed air was the primary power source in mining; today, however, electrical power dominates. This chapter reviews the basic theories of com- pressed-air and electrical power and provides several examples of applications in mine power systems. COMPRESSED-AIR POWER General Compressed air has been, and should continue to be, an important source of power in mining operations. It has been used as a means of blasting coal in conventional mining and is widely used to operate stopers, mucking machines, and other air tools in both coal and hard-rock mines. Such applications demonstrate the suitability of compressed air for applications requiring linear motion, but it is also utilized for its reliability and safety. A compressed-air system is composed of a compressor, a receiver, a distribution network, and the air-operated machines. A compressor takes in air at normal atmospheric pressure (free air) and compresses it to a higher discharge pressure. The discharge pressure must be high enough to overcome the friction in the distribution system of pipes and hoses and deliver the compressed air to the machines at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The most common type of compressor used in mines is the reciprocating compressor in which the air is compressed by a piston in a cylinder. An air receiver is a container or storage tank that is located in the distribution system between the compressor and the machines. It stores compressed air, when the full capacity of the compressor is not being used, and gives a more steady flow of air to the machines. The distribution network consists of pipes, Oalves, elbows, tees, and hoses that transmit the compressed air from the receiver to the machines in the mine. It is essential that the distribution system be designed with the proper sizes and lengths of pipe, hose, and other components to keep pressure losses well within allowable limits. The air-operated machines consist primarily of drifters, stopers, pluggers (sinkers), slushers, and several other pieces of equipment. Compressor Operation Every compressor is made up of one or more basic elements; a single element, or a group of elements in parallel, comprises a single-stage compressor. Many compression problems involve conditions beyond the practical capability of a single compression stage. Too great a compression ratio (absolute discharge pressure divided by absolute intake pressure) may cause excessive discharge temperatures or other design problems. It, therefore, may become necessary to combine elements or groups of elements in series to form a multi- stage unit, in which there will be two or more steps of compression. The number of stages commonly used in reciprocating compressors is as follows: Pressure Number of stages 0- 150 pig 1 80- 500 psig 2 500-2500 psig 3 2500-5000 psig 4 When pressure is referred to as pounds per square inch gage (psig), it means the pressure (in pounds per square inch) above barometric pressure as measured by a gage. The sum of barometric pressure and gage pressure is the absolute pressure (in pounds per square inch). The gas is frequently cooled between stages to reduce the temperature and volume entering the subsequent stages, thereby reducing the work required for compression. The basic reciprocating compression element is a single cylinder compressing on only one side of the piston (single-acting). A unit compressing on both sides of the piston (double-acting) consists of two basic single-acting elements operating in parallel in one casing. The reciprocating compressor uses automatic spring-loaded valves that open only when the proper differential pressure exists across the valves. Intake valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly below the intake pressure. Discharge valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly above the discharge pressure. A study at the Idaho mine revealed that, despite the apparent randomness of seismic events, common characteristics defined five recurring types. These characteristics included the geological structure that slipped, the first-motion pattern and the location and intensity of damage. Many large events caused little or no damage, and where it did occur it was concentrated at intersections between slipping structures and mine openings. Of 39 events between 1989 and 1994 with local magnitudes of 2.5 or more, 10 were caused by slip on bedding planes in the southern limb of the mine, 6 occurred near the vein along a set of near-vertical faults that form the central shear zone, 8 were strike-slip events on the Southern Control Fault, 4 were by slip on the vein itself and 10 involved strike-slip and/or dip-slip movement along the North Control Fault. Strategies for control of mining-induced seismicity need to consider all five types of event, lest a strategy to reduce one type increases others

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) remains a serious health hazard to the US mining workforce who are potentially exposed as various ore bodies are drilled, blasted, hauled by truck, crushed, screened, and transported to their destinations. The current Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) for RCS remains at approximately 100 μg/m3 , but it is noteworthy that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has lowered its PEL to 50 μg/ m3 (with enforcement dates staggered through 2022 for various sectors), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has held a 50 μg/m3 recommended standard since 1976. To examine a method for reducing RCS exposure using a NIOSH-developed video exposure monitoring (VEM) technology (referred to as Helmet-CAM), video and respirable dust concentration data were collected on eighty miners across seven unique mining sites. The data was then collated and partitioned using a thresholding scheme to determine exposures that were in excess of ten times the mean exposure for that worker. Focusing on these short duration, high magnitude exposures can provide insight to implement controls and interventions that can dramatically lower the employee’s overall average exposure. In 19 of the 80 cases analyzed, it was found that exposure could be significantly lowered by 20% or more by reducing exposures that occur during just 10 min of work per 8-hour shift. This approach provides a method to quickly analyze and determine which activities are creating the greatest health concerns. In most cases, once identified, focused control technologies or behavioral modifications can be applied to those tasks.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 39,420 acres of the 60,960-acre Skedaddle Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. There are no known mines or mining operations in the study area. None of the prospects or claims in or within a 1 mile peripheral zone around the study area have recorded production. At least 276 recorded lode, 6 unrecorded lode, and 29 placer claims have been located in and within about 1 mile of the study area. Approximately 191 of the claims are in the study area. Four of these were current in 1985; all four are wholly or partly inside the study area. None of the study area was being explored by private industry in 1985. Metallic and nonmetallic commodities present in the study area consist of gold, mercury, perlite, basalt, pozzolan, stone, and sand and gravel. Perlite is represented by a single deposit which contains 184,000 tons of subeconomic resources in and adjacent to the study area. No other sites contained identified resources. There are no other identified nonmetallic resources in the study area. Occurrences in and near the study area contain small amounts of gold and mercury in vein-type deposits and show characteristics similar to bulk-tonnage, low-grade gold deposits. No base-metal resources were identified. The gold and mercury mineralization and perlite deposit are spatially related to a volcanic center located in the Skedaddle Mountains. Prospects in the Skedaddle Mountains may contain both precious metals and perlite resources, but additional work is required to adequately delineate these areas.

In Finland Posiva Oy (Company) is responsible for implementing the final disposal programme for spent nuclear fuel of its owners. Company is preparing for the geological disposal in Olkiluoto crystalline bedrock. Excavation will be executed using drill and blast method. Method unavoidably causes variable excavation damaged zone (EDZ) on tunnel surfaces. The EDZ constitutes a risk for long term safety and therefore good control methodology of the blasting technique is required. The thicker the EDZ, the greater is the likelihood for detrimental transport pathways for ground water to transport radio nuclides, should those be present.

In modern mining, the core of mine planning and design is the block model, a simplified representation wherein the ore deposit is divided in a number of virtual rock cubes, each characterized by technical and economics parameters. Mining engineers use this model to design the mine and develop production schedules. Traditionally, sustainability issues are not considered in the mine design, planning and engineering processes but rather are incorporated in the later stages of the feasibility evaluation as necessary expenditures and operating costs. This paper describes the results of a research project aiming to develop a methodology to incorporate sustainability parameters directly into the block model, so that they become an integral part of the design, planning and scheduling processes. It is considered that the incorporation of sustainable parameters into the block model would yield a more responsible mine design and improve mining projects sustainability performance

Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. As part of its program to develop technology that will encourage maximum utilization of the Nation's mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on debrining potash-clay waste slurries by means of flocculation with a high-molecular-weight polymer and subsequent solid-liquid separation on a rotating trommel screen. In laboratory batch tests, potash-clay waste slurries were consolidated from initial clay contents of 8 pct to final contents of 30 pct with a polymer dosage of 1.2 Ib/ton of dry clay waste. Small-scale continuous tests yielded debrined products containing 20 pct solids using a polymer dosage of 1 Ib/ton of dry clay solids.

In 1972, a cooperative program to map and estimate the quantity of Tertiary coal resources in southern Saskatchewan was initiated by the federal and Saskatchewan governments. More than 700 exploratory boreholes were drilled over a two-year period, and data were obtained from other organization s on an additional 1500 boreholes in the area. Stratigraphic data and data on each coal seam penetrated in the boreholes, along with technical and location data for each borehole, were stored in a computer data base for convenience of retrieval, modification and manipulation. Programs and program packages were developed or adapted to: (1) select borehole information defined by variable retrieval parameters from the data base; (2) calculate derived information , such as overburden ratios. cumulative net coal thicknesses , mean weighted center of gravity of coal seams in each borehole, etc., from the selected data ; (3) produce posting maps of either selected data or calculated information in various combinations at variable scales on a plotter or CRT display; (4) produce contoured structure, isopach or ratio maps , and perspective diagrams as appropriate , utilizing plotter or CRT display; (5) calculate and categorize quantities of coal in place within user- defined "mineability-economic-reliability" limits. The emphasis in computer utilization was placed on geological credibility of the results and ease of operation by relatively untrained geological personnel, resulting in extensive use of interactive methods. The single most important benefit derived from using computer-assisted procedures is the ability to produce new maps and quantity estimates rapidly and inexpensively as a result of availability of new data or/and changes in external criteria which impose economic or mineability constraints.

For the purpose of determining confidence limits for ore grade estimates, an extensive simulated data base was used, which included 1728 ore blocks with ‘actual’ grades and the corresponding estimates based on ordinary and simple kriging. The practical results show that conditional unbiasedness is essential and that acceptable confidence limits can then be set using Normal theory for the simulated error distribution based on the logarithms of the ratios of ‘actuals’/estimates with a variance related to the kriging variance. The mean of the data used to prepare the variogram and the estimated block grade are to be used properly in this approach. A practical analysis was also done of the actual point and block data from a very large mined out Carbon Leader area. The distributions of the actual grades for two levels of block sizes with different levels of variability were fitted using three models, ie. 2-. 3- and compound-lognormal. The trends of tonnages, grades and relative profits for a range of pay limits, as well as the usual tonnage-grade curves, show a practical insensitivity for the choice between the three lognormal models considered.

Based on X-ray phase analysis and exploratory experiments, a new technology was developed to recycle multiple valuable elements in spent Al2O3-based catalyst. The experimental results showed that after roasting at 750°C for 30 minutes at an Na2O:Al2O3 mol ratio of 1.2, the leaching recoveries of alumina, vanadium and molybdenum from the spent catalyst were 97.2%, 95.8% and 98.9%, respectively. Vanadium and molybdenum in sodium aluminate solution can be recovered by barium hydroxide and barium aluminate. The precipitation recovery of vanadium and molybdenum was 94.8% and 92.6%, respectively. Al(OH)3 is prepared from sodium aluminate solution using the carbonation decomposition process. The purity of Al2O3 is 99.9% after calcinations, and the recovery of alumina can reach 90.6% in the whole process. The Ni-Co concentrate was leached with sulfuric acid, and a nickel recovery of 98.2% and a cobalt recovery of more than 98.5% were obtained under the experimental condition of 30% (w/w) H2SO4, 80°C, a liquid: solid ratio of 8:1 (by weight), a reaction time of 4 hours and a stirring rate of 800 rpm.

"A series of tests was carried out on a dry blend of PPAN and LAN prills (LANFO). The objective of thetests was to determine detonation stability and VOD performance compared to ANFO. Heave andfragmentation results in the field were also evaluated visually. A number of factors were behind for.mulating this blend. A lower cost is combined with higher in-hole energies, but at slower reactionrates and lower peak borehole pressures. The resultant effect is improved heave characteristics andlower energy losses caused by inefficient crushing of the rock immediately around the borehole.The test results indicate that IANFO is ideally suited to blasting in softer midburden and overburdenrock types often encountered in coal strip mines."

The status of remote sensing data availability in New Zealand is outlined and discussed. Currently, two multispectral remote sensing satellites are providing regular data over New Zealand; aircraft scanner services are available from Australia.; operational radar satellite services are yet to materialise. The advantages and disadvantages of the various data types are compared and contrasted. Some image processing considerations are outlined.
