The Ashanti mine is located within the Lower Proterozoic Birimian of Ghana, and covers a concession of 474 square kilometres at its Obuasi operations which comprise large scale underground, surface and tailings treatment facilities. The mine had operated for a century at the end of 1997 and had produced nearly 25 million ounces of gold, a significant proportion of which came from the underground operations. This paper covers the strategy under which exploration for both surface and underground mineral resources was instrumental in enabling the expansion programme to go ahead together with the methodologies and results that have developed in the exploration area over the last five years. Within capital expenditure constraints, the objective on surface is to replace oxide depletion with a secondary objective of discovering new sulphides in areas other than the main trend. In the underground, the exploration strategy is directed at replacement of both underground and surface sulphide depletion, minimising finding costs and assisting the development of long lead time infrastructure. The exploration application describes the methodologies in use for both surface and underground exploration that have been developed in recent years in conjunction with a description of a major review conducted in 1995/96 of the exploration database using an integrated approach, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing and structural geology. A revisit of soil geochemical data in particular, and modification of exploration methodology led to the success in finding relatively significant new oxides in 1997.

The location of a decline shaft portal can have far reaching implications if the geotechnical conditions are not suited for safe and cost effective excavation. Ideally the portal should be positioned in an area where the excavation requires minimal support and the portal can be formed in reasonably competent rock. In many cases, however, the shaft is linked to an underground mining plan and the shaft may have to pass through poor ground conditions. Determining the optimal position at which tunnelling can commence i.e. the portal, is critical and requires a thorough geotechnical investigation. Methods used to acquire information for the assessment of the ground conditions are discussed in this paper. Selection of the appropriate methods is dependent on the anticipated ground conditions, the phase of investigation and restrictions due to site access and budget. Non-invasive techniques are often used during preliminary phases and invasive techniques for the detailed investigation. The methods used during each phase of investigation are discussed. Two case studies are then presented to provide examples of the investigative methods used in two different environments. The first being a flat featureless site with thick soils and deeply weathered bedrock, while the second is a mountainous site with differentially weathered rocky outcrops. Based on these cases, it is clear that an understanding of the geology and geomorphology of the site is vital to the final geotechnical assessment. The effect of microwave radiation on the processing of Palabora open pit ore has been investigated. Significant reductions in Bond work index are demonstrated for microwave treated samples. Reductions in work index were found to be sensitive to applied power level and method of application. After single stage magnetic separation tests, improvements in recovery of FeO were noted. However, these were curtailed by oxidation of the magnetite species as a result of continued heating. The effects of microwave radiation upon the recovery of copper after froth flotation were also quantified. Small initial increases in recovery of copper were note dafter microwave treatment. However, with prolonged exposure, recovery was found to decrease. Overall recovery of copper was not affected except for samples treated for extended duration. The influence of microwave treatment upon the conventional Palabora grinding circuit has been quantified with the use of USIMPAC software. "Abstract - The early Paleozoic accretionary tectonic regime that was established along the Laurentian margin of the Newfoundland Appalachians provided a favorable setting for shear-hosted gold mineralization along a major terrane suture, the Baie Verte-Brompton Line. The Stog’er Tight prospect is one of several mesothermal-style gold occurrences hosted by shear zones within accreted ophiolites and oceanic arc terranes on the Baie Verte Peninsula. It is an epigenetic, stratabound deposit that is confined to shallow-level gabbro sills within the volcanic cover sequence of the allochthonous Point Rousse ophiolite complex. Gold mineralization at Stog’er Tight is associated with hydrothermal mineral assemblages represented by chlorite-calcite, sericite-ankerite, red albitepyrite (±Au) and chlorite-magnetite alteration zones. Gold occurs with pyrite within the intensely altered gabbro, along the margins of syn- to late-shear, quartz-rich, replacement veins.The Stog’er Tight gabbro served as a rigid body conducive to shear deformation and fluid penetration, whereas, its high Fe-Ti oxide content induced fluid oxidation and gold-pyrite precipitation. Hydrothermal alteration involved progressive CO2, S, Na, and LILE metasomatism, along with significant enrichments in the REE, HFSE, and Th in the high-grade ore zone. Temperatures of vein formation and alteration are constrained by oxygen isotope thermometry to be between 250°C and 480°C. Isotopic compositions of vein quartz from the Stog’er Tight prospect are uniform (??O = +12.5 ± 1‰) and fall within the range cited for many shear-hosted, auriferous quartz veins.A U-Pb zircon igneous age of 483 +3/-2 Ma for the Stog’er Tight gabbro is consistent with its stratigraphic correlation with other Ordovician ophiolitic and volcanic arc/back-arc assemblages in Newfoundland. The U-Pb age of a rare variety of hydrothermal zircon recovered from the high-grade ore zone directly constrains the timing of gold mineralization to 420 ±5 Ma, in accord with a major orogenic episode of Silurian age that produced many of the magmatic and metamorphic rock suites in north-central Newfoundland. Our results are consistent with a post-peak metamorphic, late-magmatic model for gold mineralization that occurred during the waning stages of Silurian orogenesis, driven by emplacement of I-type granitoid intrusions into the crust."

There has been a trend in recent years in performing the initial formation freezing using liquid nitrogen (LIN) and then converting the system to circulating refrigerated brine. While proponents of this method state it decreases freezing time, it can also be considered an alternative to inadequate refrigeration capacity. This method was used on several small projects in the 1980s. Problems such as broken pipes, frozen brine, and unsafe work conditions caused contractors to re-think the method. This paper discusses these problems and also presents work schedules showing no schedule reduction. In fact, this method can lead to longer time as well as significantly higher costs. BACKGROUND Ground freezing as a method to provide groundwater control and temporary earth support for excavations is completed using a relatively simple process: drilling and installing refrigeration pipes around the perimeter of the excavation and introducing a coolant into these pipes. The coolant extracts heat from the ground, converting the pore water to ice and forming a strong, impermeable material. A typical ground freezing system is illustrated in Fig. 1. SYSTEMS There are two basic types of coolant systems: circulating and direct expansion. The circulating coolant system is made of two separate, closed systems. The medium circulating is the secondary coolant. It is cooled at a central refrigeration plant, circulated through the pipes, and warms as it extracts heat from the ground. It then circulates back to the plant where it is cooled. This coolant is chilled in a heat exchanger by the primary refrigeration system where a compressor system is charged with a refrigeration gas. The heat is ultimately extracted from the ground and expelled into the atmosphere by an evaporative condenser. Secondary coolants are usually a brine or glycol chemical while the primary refrigeration gas is anhydrous ammonia or another commercially available gas.

"Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is classified as the leading work-related disability in the mining industry. ONIHL has a negative impact, on not only the health and occupational productivity of affected individuals, but arguably also on the country’s mining industry and economy. Hearing conservation programmes (HCPs) are an effective strategy in the management of ONIHL. However, current literature indicates that HCPs are not achieving the anticipated and desired outcomes in the South African mining sector despite the efforts focused on the management of ONIHL. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose the use of a feedback-based noise monitoring model as a tool for monitoring and managing ONIHL in the South Africa’s mining sector. This model is a basic static feedback model with practical applications such as estimating, monitoring. and providing quantitative information to aid miners, mining administrators, and policy-makers in decision-making around HCPs. Additionally, the model could form part of an early intervention and management strategy for ONIHL in the workplace. The strength of this model, although currently static, is that it encompasses all the pillars of HCPs and takes into account the policies concerned with the management of ONIHL in the mining sector. IntroductionHazardous noise levels (above 85 dBA) in the workplace place exposed employees at risk of developing a disabling occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL). ONIHL is the ‘partial or complete hearing loss in one or both ears as a result of one’s employment’ (Nandi and Dhatrak, 2008, p. 1). This type of hearing loss develops gradually as a result of being exposed to continuous or intermittent high levels of noise over a long period of time (McBride, 2004; Patel et al., 2010; Rappaport and Provencal, 2001). A hearing threshold below 40 dBs is classified as a disabling hearing loss (Yadav et al., 2015), resulting in a hidden condition that does not readily manifest itself (Tye-Murray, 2009, p. 3). Dugan (2003) describes disabling hearing loss as the ‘most prevalent, least recognized and least understood physical disability’, while Copley and Frederichs (2010) and Hermanus (2007) argue that permanent disabling hearing loss is a major contributor to the global burden of disease on individuals, families, communities, and countries."

Magnetic fields have been used for inclusions removal from melt and preparation of materials with gradient compositions. Fundamental in these applications is that the induced magnetic forces on the particles/melt can enhance migration and change the interaction behavior. In the present paper, migration and interaction behavior of electrical-insulating particles in a conductive melt under strong magnetic field are theoretically analyzed. It is found that the migration can be considerably enhanced for micrometer sized particles by applying a strong magnetic field. In addition, two forces are involved in the interaction between two particles: the interparticle magnetic dipole-dipole attractive force due to magnetization and the repulsive force induced by flow of the melt. This theoretical analysis renders a better understanding of recent experimental results. Additionally, a new method by using strong magnetic field can be proposed to control the particle size distribution for the preparation of metal-matrix composites.

Because shape is an assessment of the three-dimensional form of a particle, it may be described in terms of sphericity (?), which is a measure of how closely a particle approaches a spherical configuration. In this study, Darcy?s law and the Kozeny-Carman model for fluid flow through porous media were applied to packed beds to determine the sphericity (?) of apatite particles. The beds were composed of glass spheres or particles of apatite (igneous from Brazil and sedimentary from the United States) of three classes of size (Class 1: -297 +210 µm; Class 2: -210 +149 µm; Class 3: -149 +105 µm). Glass spheres were used to validate the model because of its known sphericity (? = 1.00). Apatite particles, either igneous or sedimentary, showed very close values for particle sphericity (? ? 0.6). Observations on particle images conducted by scanning electron microscopy illustrated that igneous (? = 0.623) and sedimentary (? = 0.644) particles of apatite of Class 2 predominantly exhibit elongated shape. The close value of particle sphericity (? ? 0.6) showed by either igneous or sedimentary apatite may be justified by the similarity in particle shape.

The flow function of an iron ore material governs its flowability characteristics in material handling chains within the resource industry. A uniaxial compression test is able to obtain a flow function more rapidly comparing to the Jenike direct shear test; nevertheless, the results often exhibit lower rankings using the former method. This study aims to investigate the fundamental stress states within the test specimen that lead to this phenomenon, and to introduce a new uniform density specimen preparation method for a uniaxial compression test, in order to achieve comparative flow functions as for a Jenike direct shear test. The minimisation of the wall friction effect and achievement of the critical state when preparing a uniaxial specimen are explicitly discussed. Experimental investigations on flow functions of a suite of Australian iron ore samples were conducted using both the uniform density uniaxial compression test and the Jenike direct shear test. Results from both methods were found to be comparable, providing the specimen exhibits cohesive flow behaviours. The Ross Goldfield is a unique gold resource. From its discovery in 1865 there was a growing understanding of the geology of the deposit as mining moved from the surface at Jones Flat in the south to underground extraction at Ross Flat further north. Multiple layers of gold-bearing gravels were penetrated in deep shafts and six rich gold-bearing bottoms were worked. The ultimate bottom on the Old Man Group gravel surface has never been reached either at Jones Flat or at Ross Flat. Mining at Ross Flat was ultimately halted by uncontrollable flooding, by escalating costs and by a shortage of labour during the First World War. Mining at Jones Flat recommenced in the late 1980s and attention has once again been drawn to the potential magnitude of the resource at Ross Flat. Research of historic literature shows that there is potential for a bulk gold grade of 400 mg/m3 in a volume of 82 million cubic metres of gravels which lie in a basin between Jones Flat and north Ross.

Through a unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT) Center, a video packed, dazzling CD-ROM training program was developed for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Why this product was developed, and why the aggregate industry, will be discussed along with the challenges faced throughout the project. Cooperation from every one involved including MSHA made this the product of which all other training materials in the mining industry will be measured against in the 21st Century. This product's versatility and wide application makes it a tool that is as critical to a mine's success as any earth moving machine. Developed with both state and federal grant moneys allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

This report summarizes the incidents that preceded the December 9, 1970, propane-air explosion in Port Hudson, Mo., and then attempts to establish the nature of the explosion from the ensuing events. Special emphasis is given to possible ignition sources, the distribution of flammable vapors, and the analysis of blast damage. Both near-and far-field damage indicated that this explosion may be attributed to the detonation of propane in air with an energy release equivalent to that from about 50 tons of detonating TNT.

The primary objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazard of materials used in the construction of mine stoppings and in the sealing and reinforcing of mine ribs and roofs. The materials investigated were: silicone, phenolic, and isocyanate-based rigid foams, as well as epoxy and acrylate mine sealants. Of the rigid foams tested, the X-156 urethane foam presented the greatest toxic hazard based on toxic load values hydrogen chloride was the main toxic species evolved by this foam. In 'lone of the isocyanate-based compositions was hydrogen cyanide the major component, but its contribution increased with temperature. The FS-24 urethane and Celotex Max-Seal isocyanurate foams had the lowest toxic load values, although these two foams have different applications for in-mine use. Of the two mine sealants tested, the latex /acrylic coating presented the greater toxic hazard with acetic acid being the main toxic species evolved.

Potassium, lithium, strontium, barium, and manganese are present in many oilfield brines, None of them except barium is determined routinely in brine analyses. Therefore, sensitive and accurate flame-spectrophotometric methods were developed. Potassium, lithium, and strontium were determined by a standard-addition technique in ethyl alcohol solutions. Barium and manganese were determined in ethyl alcohol and normal propyl solutions, respectively, after interfering substances were removed.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Mae Moh coal mine is an open-cut coal mine in Thailand that produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually to generate 2400 MW of electricity. The surface mine pit covers is 4 km by 7 km with mining depths ranging up to 260 m. A large pit slope is formed with the progression of the mining operation. However, massive slides in the pit slope occur often due to the existence weak planes such as faults and bedding, and the weak mechanical properties of the rocks. Hence, 200 m to 300 m boundaries of rock block including coal seams are left in front of faults in order to prevent slides and maintain the stability of the pit slope. As a result, there are significant coal reserves beneath the abandoned area along the pit slope. Moreover, the mined coal seams are very thick and their thickness range from 15 to 30 m.This paper discusses the application of multi-slicing highwall mining system with stowing to this very thick coal seam left around large pit slopes by means of numerical analysis.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralised bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulfides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralisation. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments. A sedimentary origin is advocated for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity and high salinities, perhaps related to the Emu Fault, are considered as contributing factors to ore genesis. The metallurgy of this deposit is discussed in relation to its geologic history.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on many topics relating to the mineral resources of the United States. This is done to ensure an adequate supply of minerals essential to a viable domestic industry and a sound economy. The United States is almost totally dependent on foreign supplies for a number of minerals such as chromium, niobium, tantalum, and manganese for which there is no available substitute, while many other minerals such as titanium are abundantly distributed throughout the earth but seldom occur in adequate concentrations or useful forms. This report describes an example of a small but high-grade occurrence of titanium are in Nelson County, VA. This occurrence could be exploited under favorable economic conditions with new mining technology such as borehole slurry mining. The report demonstrates that the dikes at titanium ore, a mixture of ilmenite and apatite locally termed nelsonite, can be detected and traced along strike using magnetometer traverses. This information will aid in the selection of appropriate slurry borehole mining test sites in the area.
