DETA exhibits a highly selective depressant action on pyrrhotite without adversely affecting the collectorless flotability of pentlandite and chalcopyrite in nickel-copper ores of the Sudbury region. A simplified Eh-pH diagram has been constructed to illustrate the extended stability of elemental sulphur and to explain the collectorless flotation of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Cu and Ni ions, which are known to exist on the surface of pyrrhotite, promote the flotation of this mineral whether a collector is present or not. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the action of DETA involves the sequestration of Cu and Ni ions from surfaces under a wide range of redox conditions; analysis of flotation test filtrate indicates as much as a 20-fold increase in the concentration of Ni and Cu ions. It appears that DETA may enhance the self-hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite and pentlandite by exposing more of the sulphur-rich surface sites for bubble contact in flotation. In this paper a numerical formulation is presented for determination of the axial load along a cable bolt for a prescribed distribution of rock mass displacement. Results using the program CABLE indicate that during excavation, the load distribution that develops along an untensioned fully grouted cable bolt depends on three main factors: (i) the properties of the cable itself, (ii) the shear force that develops due to bond at the cable-grout interface (i.e. bond stiffness), and (iii) the distribution of rock mass displacement along the cable bolt length. In general, the effect of low modulus rock and mining induced stress decreases in reducing bond strength as determined from short embedment length tests, is reflected in the development of axial loads significantly less than the ultimate tensile capacity even for long cable bolts. However, the load distribution is also dependent on the deformation distribution in the reinforced rock mass. Higher cable bolt loads will be developed for a rock mass that behaves as a discontinuum with deformation concentrated on a few fractures, than for one which behaves as a continuum, either due to a total lack of fractures or a very high fracture density. This result suggests that the stiffness of a fully grouted cable bolt is not simply a characteristic of the bolt and grout used, but also of the deformation behavior of the ground. In other words, the same combination of bolt and grout will be stiffer if the rock behaves as a discontinuum than if it behaves as a continuum. This paper also explains the laboratory test programme used to determine the constitutive behavior of the Garford bulb and Nutcase cables bolts. Details of the test setup as well as the obtained results are summarized and discussed.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rim. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

A great deal of effort has been expended on how to optimize conventional water cooling circuits in furnace cooling elements, and the results have been largely satisfactory. However, there is a general agreement that the proximity of high-pressure water passages to the flow of molten furnace products is a safety concern. Nonetheless there exists little alternative to the formula: increasing furnace integrity implies the incorporation of more extensive forced-convection water cooling systems. Recent developments in evaporative cooling technology have resulted in the development of a high-capacity heat pipe capable of operating under the thermally intense environments of a metallurgical furnace. The system functions using several kg of a working fluid (water) in total, has no moving parts, and allows for a significant reduction in cooling water requirements. Full-scale pilot tests of a copper tap hole and slag launder were done in 2003 and2005, with detailed results given in this paper.

This paper shall present the design and construction of bored pile and diaphragm wall for the proposed MHA complex in Singapore. The work was carried out by L&M Foundation Specialist Pte Ltd and PWD Consultants Pte Ltd was the consultant for this project. A brief description of the project is first presented to illustrate the scope and scale of the work involved, which includes the construction of bored piles and diaphragm walls and installation of steel stanchions in the bored piles. This is followed by a description of the methodology used to analyse and design the wall and bored piles. As both towers in this project are supported on bored piled foundation and are constructed by top down construction method, the analysis of the wall has taken into consideration the sequence of work phase by phase and this was carried out by means of a commercial finite element program called CRISP. Modelling of the problem will be briefly described and the findings from the numerical analysis will be presented. This is followed by a description of the structural and geotechnical design aspects of bored piles. The paper shall then describe the difficulties encountered for this project and solution used to solve the problem. The subsoil condition will be described with special mention on the encounter of very strong granitic rock at depth above the maximum excavation level of the basement at certain locations, hence necessitating the drilling of rock for a considerable depth for both bored piles and diaphragm wall. At this juncture, the construction method used to drill through the rock will be briefly described. For construction of bored piles, penetration of rock was carried out by chiselling or drilling using reverse circulation rigs. For construction of diaphragm wall, it requires the employment of Bauer hard rock cutter which uses cutting wheels fitted with roller bits and are capable of excavating into granitic rock of compressive strengths more than 100 MPa.

"Four occurrences of galena-cemented sandstones, exposed in the Lower St. Lawrence - Gaspésie area, are described. They constitute a new, insufficiently explored type of deposit in Quebec.One mineralized body, a minor occurrence, is hosted in Lower Devonian rocks deposited in an estuarine, intertidal river channel during a marine regression; major cements are dolomite and sulphides. Another occurrence, a drilled prospect, is hosted in Upper Silurian rocks deposited unconformably on Cambro Ordovician basement during a marine transgression. With galena and quartz as main cementing minerals, it is similar to some well-known, economic sandstone-lead deposits. A third and fourth, a drilled prospect and a minor occurrence, are hosted in Upper Cambrian rocks deposited on continental slopes. In both, sulphides mainly occupy a secondary porosity. The differences between the third and fourth occurrences are: (1) cementing translucent minerals (carbonates and barite in one; chlorite in the other); (2) chronology of final subsurface dissolution (prior and subsequent to sulphide precipitation, respectively); and (3) important fracture porosity only in the barite-bearing deposit.The diversity of the four occurrences, and the unequal geological knowledge of their respective features, prohibit the formulation of uniform guidelines for further exploration.IntroductionThe attention of the mineral exploration community is drawn to four occurrences of galena-cemented sandstones (Fig. 2A) in the Cambrian of the Taconian Orogen and in the Siluro-Devonian basin of the Lower St. Lawrence and Gaspésie area (Fig. 1). In view of the fact that sandstone-lead deposits (Bjerlykke and Sangster, 1981) are, or have been, mined in several countries (e.g . Laisvall in Sweden: see Rickard et al., 1979; Largentiere in France: see Foglierini et al., 1980), the mere presence of occurrences in Quebec indicates that the mineral potential of some parts of the Appalachians requires further evaluation.Exploration for the deposits considered here is essentially restricted to geological methods and drilJing (e.g . Mainguet Suares and Samama, 1969), since the response to geophysical methods is virtually nil, at least in the initial, surficial stage of an exploration program. As the particular disciplines of geology utilized in exploration depend a great deal on the geological setting of a mineral occurrence, the diversity of the Quebec deposits is of prime importance. Therefore, the four occurrences (Fig. I, Table 1) studied by the authors are herein briefly described with emphasis on their stratigraphic and tectonic setting, and on the evolution of pore space and sequential occlusion of pores and fractures. MINERAL production in almost all European countries suffered a sharp setback because of the war. Plants were damaged, transportation facilities disrupted, and labor dispersed and demoralized. Since the war, due to lack of confidence and economic stability, there has been little incentive to rebuild and expand the mineral industries even though a big demand at high prices exists for mineral products. Most mining and metallurgical companies in Europe hesitate to invest their capital because of the tendency towards nationalizing industry, high taxes, and low output of labor, as well as the deficiency of mine supplies and equipment within their countries. In short, they do not have faith in the future, and for these same reasons and fears most of the mining companies in America will not risk capital investment in Europe. In Europe, including the United Kingdom, free enterprise has been losing ground and as a result the foundation of their economic welfare is being undermined. American mining interests willing to take the initiative could help in counteracting this influence if a way were found for them to co-operate with the European producer without too great a risk.

The US Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture (SCJV) are working on a production-scale, in situ copper recovery project in Arizona. The research is being conducted at the Santa Cruz site, located 11.2 km (7 miles) west of Casa Grande, AZ (Fig. 1). Santa Cruz is a 1.36-Gt (1.5 billion st) porphyry deposit averaging 0.6% Cu, of which 65% is oxidized, concealed beneath post-mineral alluvium at depths of 365-914 m (1500-3000 ft). The Bureau and the SCJV will evaluate in situ mining as a method for extracting copper from this previously unmined deposit. Research objectives of the Santa Cruz project are: - to demonstrate that an in situ research test can be operated in an environmentally acceptable manner ; and * to operate an in situ well pattern long enough to develop information on copper recovery and economic feasibility data. In situ mining of copper from undisturbed deposits has not been attempted commercially. There are several potential advantages with in situ mining: less exposure of miners to hazards, lower pital costs for the mine and plant and lower operating costs. In addition, there are no pits, dumps or tailings, which means less environmental impact.

Computer modeling of the blasting process can aid in gaining an understanding of the physics controlling the process. The sequence of events in a blast occur so rapidly and in such a violent environment that measurements are still difficult to obtain. Computer modeling using a program such as DMC [Taylor and Preece, 1989a, 1989b] can provide insights into the physics of the rapid and violent events associated with a blast. DMC has been used to simulate crater blasting @‘teece, 199Oc] and the blasting of Oil Shale for modified in-situ retorting [Freece, 1990a, 1990b]. This paper will address the influence that damping has on the velocity distribution in the rock mass during the rock motion phase of a blast. Since velocity distribution is a controlling factor of muck pile shape, damping also conbibutes to muck pile shape.

The purpose of the present communication is to put on record the discovery, in October, 1916, in the Howqua district, of a new locality for the occurrence of phosphatic rocks in Victoria, and to give a preliminary description of its characters and geological occurrence. Owing to the great use of superphosphates for agricultural purposes in recent years in Australia, search has been stimulated for the discovery of local and workable supplies of phosphatic rocks. Phosphorus is an element very widely distributed in igneous rocks, usually in the form of the mineral apatite, and also occurs in sedimentary rocks and in soils as a detrital constituent. Under these conditions of occurrence, however, the amount of P 205 present in a rock or soil seldom approaches, and very rarely exceeds, 1 %. Very occasionally it occurs in such a concentrated form as to constitute workable deposits. In such cases they are usually of organic origin. Sometimes they occur as geologically recent deposits of guano or rock...

The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977, that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Northwest Barricade LLC (NWB) conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel fire blocking gel for use in underground coal mines to extinguish or to retard the growth of a coal fire. The gel agent was subjected to controlled laboratory testing to assess its ability to delay coal ignition. It was then evaluated to determine if manual fire hose application could be used to apply the agent to mine roofs and ribs to provide a safe egress for mine rescue teams from a fire area. The gel agent was also evaluated in a water sprinkler system to determine its potential for use in conveyor belt fire suppression systems. The agent was then tested in live-fire exercises to examine its effectiveness in retarding and extinguishing a deep-seated coal fire and wood fire. Lastly, the ability of a Mine Rescue Team to quickly and safely apply the gel agent to a mine entry during a simulated mine fire exercise was determined.

A refined ad improved self-sealing brattice for use in coal mine rescue and recovery operations for directing the flow of air has been developed and tested by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The brattice is made from a lightweight, low cost material that meets MSHA flammability requirements. The units can be erected using pins, spade or lightweight extensible poles. Tests here conducted to determine leakage rate from minimal to a maximum of 1.5" H20. The ability to handle reverse flows was demonstrated and a non-flammable foam was used as an auxiliary sealing agent.

For the roadway design in the German hard coal mining industry, an advanced combined planning system has been applied during the past 20 years. The German mining industry is working with single entry roadways system. After first longwall passage the roadways will be stabilised with side wall building material packages. Later this roadway will be used again for the second retreating longwall. The intention of the implementation of several different design methods for the planning of the roadways is to enhance the reliability of the results. On one hand the planning system uses numerical simulation and physical modelling in addition to analytical and empirical methods. On the other hand in-situ monitoring and analysis during the roadway development will be used to verify and calibrate the numerical and physical models. Especially before the implementation of new support elements in underground, this system is suitable and reasonable because the new support elements will be tested in the physical and numerical simulation prior to cost intensive underground tests. The interaction between the numerical and physical modelling in comparison with underground monitoring and analysis during development and the later use of roadways will be shown with some examples. The first example shows a rock bolted rectangular roadway which will be mined at both sides of the roadway. Different support and roadway building material package systems are investigated under various stress conditions. The results are utilised to optimise the roadway support and the roadway side package systems. The influence of different points in time of the installation of several support elements in a combined arch and bolted roadway is shown as another example. Two different types of support systems are compared within the physical models. These models are used as a base for ongoing numerical analysis and simulation to find out the ideal point of time to assemble the different support elements. The last example handles the influence of slickensides in the roof of arch shaped roadway on their stability. Different slickenside positions and densities are investigated and classified.

Deficient surface disposal systems of sulfidic mine waste often cause severe contamination of surface streams and groundwater reservoirs due to the oxidation of sulfide phases. The subsequent generation of leachates characterized by high acidity and elevated concentrations of toxic elements (commonly known as acid mine drainage) jeopardize the health of contiguous ecosystem. Stabilization/solidification (S/S) is recognized as a promising solution for treating such wastes. S/S processes generally mobilize alkaline and/or cementing materials/additives that act as neutralizing and/or binding agents. In the present research, industrial byproducts, namely, cement kiln dust (CKD) and Class C fly ash (FAC) have been used as candidate materials along with the partial addition of sulfate-resistant cement (SRC) in the S/S of polymetallic sulfidic mine tailings (MT). The effectiveness of S/S was assessed by comparing laboratory experimental values obtained from unconfined compressive strength, hydraulic conductivity and leaching propensity tests of S/S samples with regulatory standards for safe surface disposal of such wastes. Despite general regulatory compliance of compressive strength and hydraulic conductivity, some solidified/stabilized-cured matrices were found unable to provide the required immobilization of pollutants. Solidified/stabilized and 90-day cured mine tailings specimens made with composite binders containing (10% CKD + 10% FAC), (5% SRC + 15% FAC) and (5% SRC + 5% CKD + 10% FAC) significantly impaired the solubility of all contaminants investigated and proved successful in fixing metals within the matrix, in addition to achieving adequate unconfined compressive strength and hydraulic conductivity values, thus satisfying U.S. EPA regulations. Laboratory investigations revealed that, for polymetallic mining waste, leachate concentrations are the most critical factor in assessing the effectiveness of S/S technology.

Alberta is labouring, and has laboured, under serious difficulties in the marketing of ?her coals, due to a number of conditions which now obtain, but all of which appear capable of solution, and their elimination would insure a very largely increased market for the vast coal resources of that province. It is perhaps necessary to again mention the fact that 15 per cent of the world&apos;s coal resources are to be found in Alberta; 21 per cent of that of North America; 72 per cent of that of the British Empire, and 87 per cent of that of all Canada. While we talk largely of the great wealth of Canada, the immensity of her vast natural resources, it is axiomatic that the mere presence of any natural product in a country does not in itself constitute wealth for that country, unless these raw materials can find a market, either in their raw state, or by the process of manufacture. There are many factors, however, which enter into the marketing of any commodity. The chief of these, in my opinion, is price competition. High costs of production materially reduce the radius in which any product can be marketed, and this applies particularly to coal. Mining costs in the province of Alberta are necessarily high at the present time, due in a large measure to the ease with which the &apos;gopher hole&apos; mine can be opened with small capital.
