"AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. is a Canadian company that designs and develops monitoring, control and navigation systems for the surface and underground mining industries. In 1992, AQUILA Mining Systems began the development of technology for monitoring, controlling and positioning mobile mining equipment. In 1993, AQUILA completed its first field test with GPS receivers onboard ablasthole drill, and thus demonstrated the viability and strategic relevance of this technology in surface mining. Since then, AQUILA has installed GPS-based technology on drills and shovels in several Canadian mines. This paper will review the development of these systems and discussthe benefits the mining industry could realise through their production implementation."

Modern underground coal mines can be very large, having a total connected load in excess of l5 000 hp. These mines generally have many miles of high-power conveyor belts and 15 or more miles of high-voltage power cables at distribution voltages of 12.47, 13.2, 13.8, or 14.4 kV. The shielded cables used in mine power distribution systems have a significant level of capacitance, on the order of 110 pF/ft. This level of capacitance, in an extensive power distribution system at today's voltage levels, can cause significant charging currents during a ground fault. This paper addresses the potential detrimental effects of capacitance charging currents during line-to-ground faults in mine power distribution systems. A representative mine power system is modeled, and simulations with faults at various locations are conducted to evaluate the effects of this capacitance on the level of fault current and relay selectivity. This paper also includes results of capacitance measurements made on mine power feeder cables used to validate the simulation model.

The objective of this research was to develop a mathematical model for gyratory crushers to help in the prediction of energy consumption and to analyze dominant parameters that affect this energy consumption. The development of a gyratory crusher model was achieved in the following three main stages: mathematical representation and coding of the crushing process; building an amperage constant model to derive an energy-scaling formula; and modifying the amperage constant model to represent a full-scale model. Due to their significant influence on feed-size distributions, two blasting parameters, i.e., burden and spacing, were considered. The crusher parameters that affect energy consumption were also identified. A case study of an operating dolomite mine was performed. The results indicated that by changing the burden, spacing and crusher closed-side setting, the overall (blasting and crushing) costs could be reduced by 4.7% to 7.9% annually. It can also be concluded that burden and spacing values have a linear positive relationship with the crusher energy consumption, while closed-side setting values have an inverse linear relationship with the energy consumption.

"Large variability of ore types, escalating variables operating costs and increased throughput require large investment in sensors and systems in mineral processing operations. Mining and mineral processing plants collect and manage more data than a small city with much in real-time. The data is changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets, and reengineer their staff, the structure and tools that were used to understand this data is lost. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a smart operation. When data is recognized as a critical asset and managed as part of an infrastructure, it become a key enabler to help transform the entire operations. In many situations, all partners in business collaboration—such as join ventures, contract manufacturer, expert service providers, and operations and maintenance companies—need access to production and asset data. The emergence and maturation of Cloud technologies make it possible to easily connect the plants to external equipment suppliers and operational support service.This paper will share examples of how mineral processors have adopted new data strategies such as self-service business intelligence, cloud computing and internal/external collaboration.INTRODUCTIONOne of the main challenges in mineral and metallurgical processing plants is effective energy and water management. The lowering of ore grades requires higher throughputs while the ores are getting more complex with variable mineralogical compositions. Electrical energy supply is becoming a restriction in many countries. Rising water management costs has a direct impact on the profitability of the operations. Grade recovery versus energy consumption in copper production for both open pit and underground mines has been described by Fuerstenau (2001). Comminution uses over 55% of the energy to produce nonferrous metals while other operations require much less energy (Nelson, Richins, & Lelinski, 2013)."

To meet the energy requirements, hydroelectric projects are planned and executed in many countries. Though these projects requires a high capital investment, the returns are regular with minimum maintenance after commissioning of the project and are ecofriendly. Bhutan is situated in the eastern Himalayas and covers an area of 38,394km2 (14824.01sq. miles. It is bordered by India in East, South and West and by Tibet in the North. The hydropower potential of the country is estimated at 30,000MW, out of which around 5% has been harnessed.

The ability to optimise a concentrator from mill feed to final products requires a simulator which integrates comminution, classification and separation modelling. In order to model this range of processes, such a simulator must handle a variety of information about the ore. The AMIRA P9 project has developed a whole-of-concentrator simulation capability which brings together a texture-based model of mineral liberation, quantitative X-ray micro-tomography analysis to measure the inputs required by this model, and a multi-component simulator software framework. In the context of this approach, the term ?multi-component? implies the ability of the simulation to handle many particle properties simultaneously; for example size, composition, density, floatability etc. The simulation software framework provides the means to manage the flow of data around a circuit flowsheet, allowing each process model to access the information relevant to that particular model. A case study based on plant data from a gold-bearing pyrite concentrator is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the multi-component approach in simulating circuits which contain comminution and separation processes.

In modern steel continuous casting technologies mould fluxes are well-known to assure lubrication required by tribological system of mould-solidifying strand shell, and to provide crystalline phase solid film, contributing to control heat extraction between strand and mould wall. Actual cooling rates during normal continuous casting mould operations are far higher than critical cooling rate of the liquid slag. Indeed, DTA measurements point out that even relatively small cooling rates of 30?50 K/min are high enough to give exiguous formation of crystals. In this paper, contribution of devitrification in defining crystalline phase formation of industrial basic mould slag, used in continuous casting of crack-sensitive steel grades, has been investigated by means of non-isothermal experiments study. Devitrification has proved to play a major role in mould flux crystallization in a working environment explaining the higher amount of crystalline phase formed in plant sample in comparison with lab sample from DTA analysis with typical cooling rate of 5?20 K/min. The amount of crystalline phases formed ranks as follow: Cuspidine > Combeite > Gehlenite. Kinetic analysis of DTA non-isothermal experiments has provided kinetic parameters through Kissinger and Ozawa methods, as Avrami constant resulting to be n ?2 and activation energy of Cuspidine crystallization resulting to be EC= 315 kJ/mole. The effect of addition to the parent material of oxides as MnO, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3near to saturation point has proved to affect, in certain cases, crystallization behaviour of mold flux. In particular, MnO, TiO2, ZrO2oxides produce a relevant dump of crystallization of Combeite and Gehlenite phases, while Al2O3and Fe2O3do not appreciably affect crystallization. Initial analysis of Long Offset Time Domain Electromagnetic (LOTEM) data has traditionally been made in terms of early and late time apparent resistivities. By using more than one grounded bipole as a source, a tensor analysis technique analogous to the method used to analyse DC resistivity multiple-source bipole-dipole surveying may be formulated. We define the æinstantaneous apparent resistivity tensorÆ as the tensor that relates the total electric field vectors at each instant to the steady state (DC) uniform half space current density vectors due to each source. Instantaneous apparent resistivity tensors calculated for a 3D resistivity model suggest that profiles of LOTEM measurements across simple 3D structures can be used to create an image that reproduces the main features of the subsurface resistivity. Where measurements are distributed over an area, maps of the tensor invariants or the tensor ellipses at different times can be made into a sequence of images which provide a way of ætime slicingÆ down through the target structure.

This report reviews the current state of the art of remote control techniques for underground continuous miners. A delineation of aspects requiring additional data is presented. Also a summary and delineation are presented in overview form for the related section functions: roof control, haulage, ventilation, power supply and rock dusting. The automated remotely controlled continuous miner project is a long-range research effort. However, the program has been divided into intermediate steps resulting in incremental production increases throughout the program. Data are developed relating the impact of our proposed research and development accomplishments to potential productivity impact.

"The term “aggregate” has a number of definitions depending primarily on the use of the material. Aggregate in some context is sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag or other material of mineral composition used in bituminous and portland cement concrete, mortar, plaster, railroad ballast, filter beds and a variety of other uses where aggregates can be utilized.Of the natural aggregates, crushed stone is widely used for most construction purposes. Crushed stone can be mined from a variety of rock types such as limestone, dolomite (dolostone), granites, and granitic type rocks, basalt, gabbro (trap rock), sandstones, schist, marble, gneiss, quartzite, rhyolite, as well as other rock types. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) breaks down the rocks by type sold as follows: limestone, dolomite, marble, calcareous marl, shell, granite, trap rock (basalt, diorite) sandstone/quartzite, slate, volcanic cinder and scoria and miscellaneous stone.In 2015, the USGS estimates that 1.32 Gt (1.45 billion st) of crushed stone were produced in the United States. The volume of crushed stone produced, and the numerous mines that produce it make the crushed stone industry the largest mining industry in the United States. The five leading states for production of crushed stone in 2015 were Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida and Ohio. The size of the first two states certainly helps in output because of the large market area. The remaining states benefit from being able to barge along rivers to outside markets in adjoining states. Georgia producers rail large amounts of granitic aggregate to Florida and adjacent states devoid of crushed stone aggregate, especially skid resistant aggregate (aggregate used on the top course of asphalt roads)."

Picking up abandoned mining tenements and looking to recover remnant resources around old operations is an opportunity that comes with its own challenges and risks. Reliance on information released to government departments (such as the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) in Western Australia) by the previous owners, can compound the risk.This paper explores Alto Metals Ltd’s Lord Nelson and Lord Henry deposits and surrounds near the town of Sandstone in Western Australia. The Lord Nelson and Lord Henry open pits produced around 2 Mt of ore for over 250 koz of gold during production between 1999 and 2010. There has been no further work carried out in the area between 2010 and 2016. The deposits are open at depth and along strike.Alto Metals picked up the tenements in 2016 and has subsequently re-estimated remnant resources around Lord Nelson and Lord Henry, and publicly reported updated Mineral Resources in accordance with the JORC Code 2012.All of the information was manually compiled from data released to the DMP and annual reports. This paper highlights the challenges and risks arising from this data compilation, geological interpretation, re-estimation and classification process, together with future opportunities and challenges for further developing the area.CITATION:Olssen, L M, Graindorge, J and Jia, C, 2017. The black-tie (optional) affair will be held at the Adam’s Mark Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 10 in St. Louis, MO. Six legendary leaders will be inducted at the ceremony. They will join 145 mining greats previously honored in the annual ceremonies. R. Joe Wagner, vice president for exploration and chief geologist of The Doe Run Co., St. Louis, will be the evening’s keynote speaker. His father, Richard Edwin Wagner (1898-1979), was inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame in 1998 at the banquet in Phoenix, AZ.

In this paper, a state-of-the-art, three-dimensional, full waveform, microseismic system was used to analyze the rock failure around a deep (> 750 m (2500 ft) of cover) bump-prone longwall panel. The microseismic system consisted of both underground and surface geophones coupled through radio telemetry and a fiber-optic network to produce pseudo real-time detection and location of seismic events surrounding the coal seam. This was the first microseismic installation of this scope at a U.S. coal mine, and the system was intended to help determine the exact strata mechanics associated with the redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation at one of the U.S.’s deepest longwall mines. Overall, 5,000 calibrated seismic events were recorded during the mining of one panel, including a Richter magnitude 4.2 event which occurred inside of the array. Analysis of these events provides a number of notable insights into the rock mass behavior. For instance, the longwall panel was widened during the retreat process, and the mining-induced seismicity shows a distinctly different behavior between the start of the panel, the mining of the narrow part of the panel and the mining of the wider part of the panel. Also, in itself, the acquisition of the ML 4.2 event was a major milestone in geomechanical and bump research. This is the first time that such an event has been recorded with this detail and accuracy at a bump-prone coal mine in the U.S. The analysis of this single event has set distinct new limits on the relationship between mining seismicity and coal bumps.

The problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures is internationally recognized and represents the single biggest expenditure in the preservation of steel reinforced concrete structures. While the corrosion protection of the reinforcing steel is no substitute for design and the placement of good quality concrete, it does provide for a viable and economical extension of structural integrity and service life in the day-to-day and practical environment in which concrete structures are constructed. The mechanism of corrosion attack and consequent deterioration of reinforced concrete structures is well understood and documented. New structures can be designed and built to withstand corrosion. However, due to short-term economic restraints, many new reinforced concrete structures continue to suffer as a result of corrosion damage, which results from the corrosion of the steel reinforcing. This paper explores the economic and practical benefits offered by the application of hot dip galvanizing as a viable means of protecting reinforcing steel concrete structures. The paper also discusses technical misconceptions that exist about application and performance provided by the use of hot dip galvanized reinforcing steel.

The Turin metro alluvium soil is mainly made of large boulders, cobbles and gravel , few sand and almost no fines. This grain size curve is out of the range of application for EPB and Slurry TBMs. In order to bore 5 of the total 7,5 kms of Line 1 tunnel, two specially designed Lovat EPB TBMs were utilised in combination with a systematic non structural pre-grouting of a small volume rectangular slab just above the tunnel section. The same pre-grouting was not however applicable for lack of access on surface in some sections of the remaining 2,5 km of tunnel that had to be bored below important buildings/structures, with under ground water pressure up to 1,5 bar, with curves radius of 180 m only. For these more critical sections it was necessary to study and implement a new technical solution and improve the capacity of the TBM to work efficiently in EPB mode even in this unsuitable ground and overall conditions. After months of studies the selected and adopted solution has been to inject inside the cutterhead chamber, in addition to the almost standard foams & polymers additive mixes, a suspension of limestone powders. This with the scope of compensating the lack of fines of the natural ground with rock powders.

"Pre-concentration in minerals processing presents clear advantages in energy efficiency, water efficiency, reduction of consumables and minimization of capital and operating costs. Outotec’s sorting solutions are powered by Tomra Sorting in order to achieve pre-concentration of concentrator feed in a variety of mineral processing applications. Sensor based sorting combines advanced sensors with rapid computational evaluation and mechanical separation of valuable material from waste and/or gangue. Modern sensor based sorting machines typically use fine air jets to propel individual rocks, thus optimizing recovery and minimizing “mis-sorting”.Gold is generally present in such low concentrations that sensors suitable for ore sorting cannot directly detect it. Therefore, in order to sort gold ore, properties of associated host rock are used. Free and sulphidic gold is often hosted on the quartz-host rock contact zone. Laser scattering effect can be used to detect the surfaces of quartz and composite quartz-host rock particles for subsequent sorting with very high recovery of 95 to 99%. In addition, ore often preferentially fractures along the quartz-host rock contact zone in the crushing circuit. This behavior helps because it liberates more quartz for detection.The feasibility of sorting is investigated for four gold projects in Northern Europe with similar mineralogy. This includes geometallurgical evaluation, amenability testing, small scale “mini-bulk” factory testing in full scale sensor based sorting. The results of the various tests are presented and basic feasibility demonstrated with information on flow sheet development. In addition, the amenability process is evaluated and recommendations made for future projects."

Any discussion of outside support to Latin American mineral industries must concede at once the pre-eminent role of U. S. industry and business. American capital has developed the great copper resources of Chile and Peru, the lead-zinc of Peru and Mexico, the bauxite of Surinam and Jamaica, the petroleum and iron ore of Venezuela. American consumers have provided the market for their products. U. S. companies operating south of the border have trained Latin American geologists, engineers, chemists, and skilled labor—including metal, mineral, and fuel technicians—to new and greater competence. The industrial demands of World War II drastically altered world economics and concepts of U. S. foreign mineral requirements. In this country discovery of vital mineral resources fell far behind the alarming depletion rates, and there was new appreciation of the actual and potential importance of the world's less extensively explored areas. During the war and afterward, the task of supplying the nation's mineral requirements became greater than private industry could carry alone, and the Government assumed a position of continuing support. In Latin America, as elsewhere, this support applies in three categories: banking, procurement, and technical assistance. The first two are now generally accepted as necessary Government functions; the third has often been misunderstood and misinterpreted, although it has given rise to legitimate controversy. There have been major accomplishments in all three categories, as well as some errors of judgment. Since the beginning of World War 11, U. S. Government financing, procurement, and technical assistance have been applied on a large scale to a wide range of commodities and services throughout the free world. The present discussion—under the separate headings mentioned—will concern only the support related to a single industrial group in a single geographic area. During the War Federal banking was conducted on an emergency scale by temporary agencies created to meet the abnormal circumstances. Unfortunately, there are no readily available data on these activities that would permit evaluating loans and credits extended for mineral projects in Latin America. The only agency operating in this field since World War II is the Export-Import Bank, under its own authority and to some extent from credits authorized by the Office of Defense Mobilization. The Bank can offer more capital—on more favorable terms—than is available from most Latin American banks, and its staff of engineers evidently can appraise loan applications more favorably than commercial banks in this country are willing to do. The risks seem to be justified, as defaults have been well under 1 pct of total loans. From V-J day 1945 to the end of 1957, mineral loans to Latin America have been authorized for projects totaling $541.63 million in eight countries. In order of magnitude of credits, they have been made to Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Bolivia. In order of magnitude by industries. they are for development and expansion of steel mills, copper, manganese, nitrate plants, iron ore, zinc plants, sulfur plants, cement plants, tungsten, coal, and lead. Loan Distribution: By far the largest loans have been $307.9 million for iron and steel projects in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, and Peru: $100.4 for developing the great low-grade copper deposits of southern Peru; and $55.3 million for developing manganese deposits in the Territory of Amapa, Brazil. Others range from $20.8 million for a zinc smelter in central Peru to $19 thousand for iron-mine trucking equipment in Chile. It has been noted that 59 pct of the loans have been to foreign companies, 14 pct to companies of mixed foreign and American capital, and 27 pct to American mining companies. Bacterial Leaching of Complex Polymetallic Sulfide Ore The work described here concerned the study on bacterial leaching of complex sulfide minerals and polymetallic ores operated in shaken flasks and small-scale columns. The bioleaching of jamesonite was not accessible. The iron extraction in pyrrhotite leaching reached 98.2 per cent after 23 days. After 26 days, the zinc extraction of marmatite reached 92.3 per cent while the iron extraction only reached 13.6 per cent. The pulp density had effect on the metal extraction of pyrrhppite and marmatite. For complex polymetallic sulfide ores, after 10 days in shaken flasks, 97.1 per cent zinc extraction was achieved. While after 60 days in small-scale column, the zinc extraction only proceeded to 7.8 per cent; By SEM and EDXA of experimental samples and their leaching residuum, the bioleaching mechanism was discussed.

Evidence of metallogenic activity in an area dominated by Upper Precambrian and Palaeozoic metasediments was partially explained in the 1980s when drilling and a geophysical survey detected hidden intrusions, but questions remained to be answered about the nature of the fluids. Sb mineralisation at El Juncalon vein-type deposit was selected for geological, geochemical and fluid inclusion studies as a model with a relatively simple quartz-stibnite-pyrite paragenesis. Many of the characteristics were those of Chinese-type vein Sb deposits, which can be regarded as atypical of the epithermal type as they are hosted by clastic rocks
