Over the past decade, approximately 5.1 billion pounds of explosives were used annually, on average, in the United States. Most of the explosives were used by the mining industry. The coal mining industry was and still is the dominant user of explosives. About two-thirds of the explosives consumed was used in coal mining.

Rhodonite, a manganese silicate, occurs as an important component of extensive veins in the San Juan district of Colorado. Recent work by the Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that typical ores of the area can be upgraded to about 30-percent manganese content. Because of their siliceous nature, such concentrates require further processing to convert the manganese into more usable forms. The investigation described in this report demonstrates the technical feasibility of producing silicomanganese from a rhodonitic concentrate by electric smelting methods. The rhodonitic concentrate used in the smelting research was prepared by dry high-intensity magnetic separation of ore from the Silver Queen vein. The concentrate contained 29 percent manganese, 2 percent iron, and 41 percent silica. The principal minerals in the concentrate were 35 percent rhodonite, 30 percent rhodochrosite, and 25 percent quartz and chalcedony. Limestone was used as the flux and coal was used as the reductant. These minerals were crushed and screened to minus 1/2-inch plus la-mesh size.

This paper attempts to explain and describe bankers' approach by: ò outlining the fundamental difference between banks' and investors' risk / return profiles. ò describing lenders' consequent use of cash flow methods in mineral valuation. areas. explaining lenders' specific treatment of key risk Fundamental to understanding banks' appraisal of mineral projects is the appreciation that lenders have a basically different risk profile and outlook from those familiar to equity investors. Lenders do not normally participate in any project upside. The economics of lending dictate that banks can only accommodate a low probability of loan default and consequently banks' principal focus in mineral ""valuation"" is ensuring an acceptably comfortable probability of debt repayment. A simple conceptual explanation of lenders' risk / return position is outlined.

Transport Canada has regulatory requirements that pertain to the transportation of explosives. An important component includes the requirement for an approved Emergency Response Assistance Plan (ERAP). The ERAP may be traced to the recommendations made by Justice Grange following the enquiry into the Mississauga train derailment of December 1979. Justice Grange recommended that any shipper of dangerous goods must have a plan to control any release of dangerous goods in the event of an accident, and that the plan must be submitted to the Minister and approved by the Minister or by an organisation or person designated by the Minister. The right to ship could be withdrawn at any time if the plan is found inadequate either in its conception or in its operation.

In accordance with the 57th section of the Explosives Act, 1875, the following report on the working of the Act during the year ending December 31, 1903, is submitted. There have been no modifications of the law during the year. No complaint is made of any falling off in the general condition of factories and magazines, and in one instance only during the year have legal proceedings been taken for any irregularity. The occupiers of factories and magazines have invariably shown perfect readiness to remedy any defects, and the managers have themselves in many instances introduced improvements tending towards greater safety. The number of deaths (5) from accidents by fire or explosion in the manufacture of explosives is below the average for the decade (6•4). Looking to the large number of persons employed in this trade, the number of deaths is not excessive and will compare favorably with the death-rate in other dangerous trades. Notwithstanding the large increase in the manufacture of explosives, the average number of deaths has greatly decreased since the passing of the Explosives Act, whereas the number of fatal accidents with explosives under conditions to which the Act does not apply appears to increase with the extension of trade.

Crushing and grinding account for the major portion (60 to 80 percent) of the overall expenses for ore processing. Autogenous (AG) and semiautogenous grinding (SAG) have been considered a step forward in comparison to conventional grinding circuits with several stages of crushing and using ball (and/or rod) grinding mills (Bassarear, 1982, MacPherson, 1989, Pithois, Casalis, 1983, Maripuu et al., 1983). However, there remains room for improvement to existing AG and SAG technologies and both technologies have immense economic benefit potential. Experience gained by the Technics & Technologies of Disintegration Ltd. (TTD) in the research of grinding processes shows that grinding in AG and SAG mills can be performed in a more effective way. The company's approach comprises the following elements: ? Novel mill design. ? New liners and lifters. ? Novel discharge grid design. ? Technique of treating material of critical particle size. Comparative tests that demonstrated the usefulness of these innovations are described in this article. Currently, there are hundreds of AG and SAG mills in operation throughout the world. Application of new internal elements of the mills and reconsideration of the circuit design of the existing grinding equipment using present technological solutions would significantly increase the throughput rate and diminish power requirement.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

Mesoporous gold sponge has the unique property of being both metallic and highly resistant to oxidation. It has potential application in catalysis, in bio-sensors, in optical coatings, in analytical chemistry and, as we show here, as the basis for a new kind of ultra-capacitor. Due to the cost of gold, the most probable niche for a gold-based ultra-capacitor would be in the high-power/high-energy regime, a region where gold would compete with devices based on RuO2. A high internal resistance limits the power that can be usefully drawn from existing carbon-based ultra-capacitors, and that this problem can potentially be overcome by gold-based devices. A simple proof-of-concept ultra-capacitor based on mesoporous gold is described and its behaviour during charge and discharge cycles examined. In this work a step change in the input or output voltage of the device was used as the controlling parameter. There was also a residual faradaic current resulting from traces of undissolved aluminium left over from the AuAl2 precursor used to make the sponge, and some charge storage due to polarization of the solution. Deconvolution of these three effects was not entirely accomplished, but an ostensible capacitance of about 7 to 14 mF/g Au was demonstrated. Further improvement from these early results seems likely.

In November, 1975, Aberdare North colliery was sealed at the surface to extinguish an open fire underground.The fire had developed from a spontaneous heating in one of the open goaf areas of the mine.The mine was re-entered with normal ventilation methods following the isolation of the working district containing the fire. The isolation was accomplished by remotely sealing the open roadways with lly ash emplaced through boreholes from the surface. A subsequent re-entry operation similarly closed the roadways close to the fire and enabled the re-opening of the sealed district.Most of the mine and the underground equipment was recovered after clearing of numerous falls and production recommenced on 25th October, 1976.

"The link between ore texture and mineral liberation has previously been established at a microscopic scale. To construct ore texture models that can be used in mining applications requires this relationship to be retained at a significantly larger scale. This is initially dealt with by finding a basic set of microtextures that form the elements of the ore textures at the next larger mesoscopic scale, simulating these mesotextures at a fine scale, then changing the support of the mesotexture simulations to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. Thus, a mutually exclusive and exhaustive set of spatially locatable mesotextures can be used to fully characterize the metallurgical properties of in situ material.A method that generates expected distributions of mesotextures for any mining block size or shape is proposed, and includes: (1) characterizing the spatial correlation of the set of mesotextures with a single covariance function; (2) generating multiple simulations of mesotextures at a fine scale; and (3) using the simulations at a fine scale to generate the expected mining block/stope mesotexture distributions. A case study, using the George Fisher sediment-hosted base metal deposit in Queensland Queensland, Australia, is developed to demonstrate the proposed methodology as well as show the inadequacy of off-the-shelf approaches.Mining-scale texture models can be used to improve the in situ discrimination of ore from waste by exploiting the joint spatial variability of grades and textures to quantify the expected metal recovery of in situ material, then calculate local marginal cut-off grades. An artificial case study is presented to demonstrate the changes in ore/waste selection when considering ore texture models compared to constant metal recoveries."

"Gold bearing deposits of the Witwatersrand basin are generally less than 2m thick and require conventional narrow-reef mining methods for extraction and employ explosives as a means of rock breaking. Optimal utilization of explosives is dependent on the overall design of the blast. The under-utilization of explosives arises when shot-holes are drilled inconsistently, overcharged, and when tamping is absent. This can be rectified by emphasizing the importance of good drilling practices as part of induction programmes and refresher courses. The project was aimed at determining whether or not explosives are being optimally utilized at project site. This was investigated through a study of the properties of explosives, mine standards, and recommendations for usage. Underground observations were made to determine whether or not mine standards were being adhered to. Historic data was obtained to establish the historic relationship existing between the quantity of explosives used (kg) and the production output (m2). This was then compared to the quantity of explosives the mine expects to use per unit of production. The results obtained were analysed to determine the presence and extent of over- or under-utilization. It was found that explosives are being under-utilized at the mine. More explosives are ordered than expected per unit of production. The explosives’ properties are not thoroughly exploited during blasting, thereby requiring the use of more explosives than prescribed. The management of the Anglo Platinum (AP) mining technical systems (MTS) embarked upon a process of defining the strategy for the MTS department. The newly established department forms part of the greater Group Information Technology (IT). The strategic process took place within an environment that had witnessed a dramatic proliferation of IT implementations across the group within the last three years. The IT department has been structured in terms of the classical plan, build and run functions with the applications and integration streams running perpendicular across these three functions. The application stream is divided into commercial and mining technical systems with business systems integration the third stream. The mining technical systems department supports mine management to effectively gather, analyse and disseminate data relating to the ore reserve by integrating a number of strategically selected IT applications to ensure that the safety, legal and operational requirements are met. This service to business is rendered by management of a strategic outsource partner via tightly controlled service level agreements (SLAs). The framework used for creating a mining technical systems department that is empowered to add value to business was formulated using the AP value chain as both the starting point and guiding process to ensure alignment to the greater internal strategy of the business. There is no startling revelation to the fact that the mining industry as a whole is generally moving toward the use of larger equipment to process ores in quantities far greater than what was even considered a decade ago. Trucks and shovels have led the way in extra large machines and many other manufacturers have followed suit in the development of so-called "supers" in their line of equipment. In order to keep pace with the industry, crusher manufacturers have also enlarged the size of their equipment. There is now on the market, a Gyratory crusher capable of accepting a 72" diameter piece of ore. Primary jaw crushers have also increased in size. It is inevitable, therefore, that larger secondary cone crushers would also be required to complement the other equipment used to process these large quantities of ore. This super-size secondary cone crusher is the SYMONS 10 Ft. Cone Crusher. Until 1973, the largest cone crusher built was the 7 Ft. Extra Heavy Duty crusher, which is currently used in the majority of the mining operations throughout the world. The 10 Ft. crusher, when compared to the 7 Ft. Extra Heavy Duty Crusher, is approximately 1-1/2 times larger in physical dimensions; three times heavier; will accept a maximum feed size which is approximately twice as large; and will crush at approximately 2-1/4 times the rate of the 7 Ft. machine at identical closed side settings. It will be the largest cone crusher built in the world. At the present time, Rexnord's Nordberg Machinery Group has accepted an order for two 10 Ft. Standard cone crushers to be delivered to an iron ore mine in South Africa in early 1975.

The Charkhan Salt Lake area of the Chaidamu Basin in West China is characterized by soft super-saline soils with very high contents of soluble salts. From the engineering point of view, these saline soils are saturated, liquid-plastic and moderately to highly compressible lean silty clay and clayey silt. In the natural state, their allowable bearing capacity is only 60-80 kPa. As to the saturated lean silty clay, liquifaction in case of an earthquake of intensity 7 on the Modified Mercalli scale is considered likely. In order to improve the geotechnicai properties of the saline soils, stone colomn stabilization by means of vibroflotation was performed. As the geotechnicai properties of the soils are closely linked with the amount and composition of the soluble salt content, saline water with chemical content similar to that of the saline soils was used as flush fluid in the course of hole-making and column-forming, with a view to keeping unaltered the amount and composition of the salts in the soils and thereby precluding reduction in or loss of their strength. Systematic monitoring on the behavior of the foundation soils before and after the treatment and comparison of the numerical data thus acquired have shown good technical results, testifying to the effectiveness of stabilization of soft superealine soils by vibroflotation. As a result of the treatment, the allowable bearing capacity was increased one to two fold, accompanied by elimination of the liquefaction potential.

Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.
