With prevailing assumptions that plentiful domestic coal reserves will be available for meeting our Nation’s expectations for on future low emission, coal-fired power plants, major government funding in Clean Coal Technology, and Carbon Sequestration Programs continues to be aggressive. However, after more than a decade of cutbacks in funding for domestic coal-related programs and personnel, there is a growing concern that adequate quantification and qualification of our Nation’s coal reserves is increasingly being compromised. This paper will define the growing concerns and dichotomies that continue to increase, and address the decreasing number of fossil fuel mapping and assessment programs by Federal and State programs.

In early 2020, the construction phase began for the new complex of buildings for Radium Hospital in Oslo – the leading facility for cancer treatment in Norway. Settlements in the surrounding area, caused by pore pressure changes, allowed for the introduction of an alternative solution for the construction of the excavation pit. The presence of solid bedrock and sensitive clay – the same material that causes major landslides in the Scandinavia – in the excavation pit, lead to a combination of techniques, which were never applied in Norway before. For the stabilization of the clay Dry Deep Soil Mixing was applied to allow safe execution of the geotechnical works. Interlocking Bored Piles with footbolts and Jet Grouting columns, in combination with anchors, provided the retaining structure for the excavation pit. Rock injections were performed to avoid any ground water ingress into the pit. Underpinning of fully operational, adjacent buildings was carried out with jet grouting columns. These works were performed from the basement of the hospital and the ‘ACI – Acoustic Column Inspector’ was used to ensure proper installation of 2 m diameter columns to a maximum depth of 25 m. The buildings were later founded on Steel Core Piles, the most common pile type in Scandinavia.

"The geological features of a rock mass have a direct influence on its blasting characteristics. It has been observed that perimeter control techniques provide excellent results in massive crystalline formations but may give poor results in weak and or highly jointed formations.A field study was conducted with the objective of understanding the role played by the geological features of a rock mass in producing and controlling blast damage. The field work involved the assessment of blast damage at several operating mines and the blasting of drift rounds in a geologically dominant rock mass.The effect of rock strength, rock quality designation (RQD), joint parameters and hydrogeological conditions on blast damage is described below. The influence of number and thickness of weak layers on blast damage is also discussed below on the basis of quantitative data. In addition, critical particle velocity ranges for damage to different rock types have also been outlined in this paper."

This paper describes a physical modelling program that recreated block cave propagation in a geotechnical centrifuge. A brief description of the design of the test along with the sample material and monitoring equipment is given. The samples tested showed caving behaviour and fragmentation distributions that one would expect from caving mines, with one cave deviating due to pre-existing major discontinuities in the sample. A series of fractures formed ahead of and parallel to the cave, implying that an extensional failure mechanism may play a larger role in cave development than previously thought. The results of acoustic emission monitoring of the tests show a seismogenic zone advancing ahead of the cave; however, the quantity and quality of the data is too limited to draw any further conclusions.CITATION:Cumming-Potvin, D, Wesseloo, J, Jacobsz, S W and Kearsley, E, 2016. Geologists in some underground gold mines collect grab samples from broken ore piles or trucks as a method of grade control. It is often known as muck sampling. Generally, the goal of grab sampling is to try and reconcile the mined grade at the ore source to the predicted grade and/or predict the mill feed grade. The mass of the sample collected is limited by health and safety issues, as well as by the capacity of the laboratory to process the samples within a given time frame. In general terms, grab sampling is known to be problematic because samplers tend to oversample the fines, and/or pick out high-grade fragments; surface sampling of piles does not test material within the pile; muck piles in development drives/faces are likely to be zoned due to the blasting sequence; high or low-grade material may preferentially segregate in the pile during mucking; the five per cent mass reject size of the material in muck piles is very large from underground blasting; some correlation usually exists whereby the larger fragments are enriched or depleted in the critical component of value; and the average error made in estimating the true stockpile grade is likely to be high. The method is prone to chronic fundamental sampling, grouping and segregation, delimitation, and extraction errors. Substantial warnings must be given about the use of grab sampling for grade control in gold mines. The method may appear to work sometimes, which can be attributed to a fine gold particle sizing and more disseminated distribution. As with all sampling methods, its appropriateness must be determined by ore characterization and heterogeneity testing to ensure the method suits the ore type.

"Pile installation in soil is a dynamic process which exhibits large deformation in the soil region. Experimental investigation of pile installation is both time and resource intensive. Numerical investigation can be a helpful tool for the analysis of the installation process. Furthermore, numerical analysis allows simulating various soils and loading conditions with ease. Finite Element Method (FEM) – a widely used framework for numerical simulations - fails to perform well for soil mechanics where large deformation and heavy material movement exists. In order to alleviate this shortcoming, Material Point Method (MPM), advancement to FEM has been used. In MPM, material points (particles) are used to represent the domain which carry the information and move over a fixed computational mesh where the governing equations are solved.In the present work, a variation of MPM, called CPDI (Convected Particle Domain Interpolation) is utilised which handles large deformation problems better than the classical MPM. Here, the material points are represented by a spatial domain which deforms according to the particle deformation. This eliminates stress oscillations while particles cross the grids. Implementation is validated and applied to pile installation in dry and saturated soil conditions. A 2D axisymmetric model is chosen, with penalty function method being used for evaluating contact between soil and pile. Sand is modelled via the hypoplastic constitutive description that takes into account large deformation, as well as small strain stiffness. From these simulations, various parameters like stress, void ratio and friction angle are studied.INTRODUCTIONOffshore piling is challenging in terms of testing and execution. Before the execution, predicting an efficient installation method requires study of various parameters, like soil conditions, type of loading, force requirement etc., and are the minimum parameters to be known beforehand. To obtain these parameters, testing a real scale prototype under different conditions is not feasible. Scaled model tests in lab can support in making certain decisions, but fail to replicate real behavior fully. Therefore, the need for a numerical simulation technique emerges, which can provide early predictions easily and accurately. This later can be extended to real scale tests, reducing the number of experimental investigation required.Simulation of displacement pile installation in sand involves large deformation due to penetration process, thereby making the application of FEM impossible, where large deformation causes heavy mesh distortions. Due to this, meshless methods are developed to treat large deformation in a better way. Among various meshless methods, Material Point Method (MPM) shows more applicability to geomechanical problems. This is mainly due to the ease of handling soil, structure and water in a unified manner."

INTRODUCTION The analysis and design of underground structures to resist vibratory motion due to earthquakes has been of interest to engineers for several decades. The dynamic stability of a powerhouse cavern was considered in the 1960s (Campbell and Dodd, 1967). About the same time, the designers of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit system developed procedures for analyzing the subaqueous tunnels placed under San Francisco Bay and the tunnels excavated along the land portions of the alignment (Kuesel, 1969). Japanese designers developed fairly sophisticated procedures for analyzing subaqueous tunnels during the late 1960s and early 1970s (Kuribayashi et al., 1974). In the past decade, proposals to site important critical underground facilities in regions with moderate to high seismic activity have increased the interest in earthquake engineering of underground structures. Seismic designs or seismic studies have been conducted for rock caverns for storage of petroleum or location of power plants (Yamahara et al., 1977; Glass, 1976), buried tanks for fuels or rad¬ioactive waste (Fukushima et al., 1977; URS/Blume, 1976), tunnels for disposal of nuclear waste (Yanev and Owen, 1978; Wahi et al., 1980), and urban mass transit tunnels (Monsees and Merrit, 1984). One of the greatest drivers of the interest in seismic analysis and design of underground structures has been the proposals to dispose of high-level nuclear waste in mined repositories some 300 to 600 m (approximately 1,000 to 2,000 ft) below the ground surface. In 1979, the authors, in conjunction with Professor Tor Brekke, presented a paper on an evaluation and design procedure used in a study of a proposed nuclear waste repository (Owen, Scholl, and Brekke, 1979).

"The base metal mine at Buchans, Newfoundland, has been producing since 1928. For many years, mill tailings were disposed of by dumping into a nearby natural watercourse via which they were transported to Red Indian Lake and deposited. In 1965, environmental concerns prompted the establishment of settling ponds near the mine site. Effluents fed to these ponds included slimes washed from mine backfill sand and waste water pumped from underground as well as mill tailings. Dusting around the perimeter of the ponds was first observed around 1970and within a couple ofyears reached serious proportions. A program to alleviate the condition by developing a vegetative cover over the tailings was commenced in 1974. The work was successfully carried out and demonstrated that the large area of waste could sustain a permanent cover of grasses.This paper outlines the experimental work done at Buchans as well as the procedures followed and the problems encountered in carrying out full-scale revegetation."

Roof falls in coal mines typically occur in or around intersections and this has not changed in the last two decades. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated failure behavior around 4-way and 3-way coal mine intersections. Three-dimensional numerical analyses were performed to determine factors that influence intersection stability. The analyses used Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Failure zones around 3-way and 4-way intersections were developed. Intersection span and horizontal stress have a major influence on intersection stability. For the 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for the 3-way entry but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. Coal ribs mostly fail due to tensile stress, while roof and floor strata fail due to shear stresses. Rib corners fail due to a combination of shear and tensile stresses. In addition to stress distribution; safety factor contours analysis was performed to assess stability of intersections.

"To enable the prediction of reagents suitable for fine coal flotation, it is necessary to develop a methodology applicable to different South African coal types. Statistical confirmation of the applicability of this methodology is important to avoid recommendation of reagents on a trial and error basis.The study included 5 coal samples from different collieries and included Highveld seam 3 and 4 coal (as one sample), Waterberg coal (zone 10 -11), Highveld seam 5 upper coal and Witbank seam 2 and seam 4 coal. Seam 3 and 4 (mixture) coal, Waterberg and the seam 5 upper coal were all found to be vitrinite rich coals. The coal characterisation study included petrographic analysis, proximate analysis, float-sink analysis, oxygen-containing functional groups, surface extraction, flotation release analysis and contact angle measurements. Flotation tests were used to validate expectations from the characterisation of the coal samples.RESULTSThe flotation data indicated that all of the coal samples were amendable to froth flotation. The best results were obtained with the Witbank seam 2 coal and the poorest flotation with Syferfontein seam 5 coal. The flotation tests showed that the best reagents to float all of the coal samples studied were iso-decanol and dodecene. These reagents produced flotation products that were near to the release curve, which are the optimum flotation results (obtained when using iso-paraffin as collector). Dodecene resulted in low ash products and iso-decanol in high yield products."

In this study Pt-Al thin films were prepared via electron beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD) with an atomic concentration ratio of Pt25:Al75. These films were heat treated at temperatures ranging from 150°C to 650°C for annealing times from 4 to 60 minutes. The resulting microstructure of these thin films were obtained via secondary electron imaging used in conjunction with depth profiling with the aid of scanning auger microscopy (PHI 700).Elemental maps of the micrographs were obtained. Simulations, based on a chemical potential Monte Carlo method1, were run for various interaction parameters. From these simulations theoretical depth-profiles and proposed microstructures were obtained. These were compared to the experimentally measured depth profiles and elemental maps. At present, many open pit mines are designed to operate and feed a processing plant with ore characteristics that were defined in the design of the mining business, which are not necessarily the same as those found during the operation. This is the case of Spence Mine, whose design was conceived considering the extraction of primary iron sulphides, however, with the extraction of such minerals, it was necessary to mine and process minerals with secondary enrichment. Then it is necessary to work with a greater selectivity degree in the operation, however the capacities of the mine and operational resources were not designed for this. Thus, the changes in the general conditions of the operation should be considered as a series of geometallurgical restrictions to achieve production schedules. The above facts impacts directly in the short-term planning, whose task is to achieve the goals proposed in productive long-term planning because the company does not have the tools necessary to plan with the degree of selectivity required, so it should be done by hand, discretizating and scheduling the production polygons. Naturally, this manual process in the short term planning deviate sharply from the areas in operation, opening new fronts and benches that result in a significant increase in costs and a loss of the value of the mineral resource to miss the exploitation sequence. The research presented in this paper is related to the development of a mathematical programming model to support the short-term planning, so as to integrate the challenge of selective mining with geometallurgy restrictions, to provide the planner a guide to construction of the polygon of exploitation, guiding the fines production to achieve the goals of the proposed production plan.

Unfortunately, as engineers, we have confined our attentions, in the main, to the scientific phases of mineral technology, relegating our man power problems to the background. But what good has all our scientific study and preparation been if we can't get the ore mined, milled, or smelted? What has happened to our labor supply? Where is the good old miner who could timber, drill a round, lay track, or do any job underground?

A geotechnical monitoring program has been implemented at Energy West Mining Company for enhancing site-specific evaluation of longwall stress conditions. This program consists of underground measurements at five locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon Coal Seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on recorded seismic events and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program together with detailed geologic mapping of longwall gateroads. In conjunction with the measurement program, the authors have completed detailed boundary-element stress analyses of the mine plans. Models have been calibrated using the data from in-mine instrumentations and then routinely used for evaluation of mine plans at depths approaching 2,600-ft. The work has improved our understanding of load transfer, seismicity and yield pillar performance. It has identified areas of potential increased stress levels at certain longwall face positions and provided guidance to measures that could be considered to mitigate the potential for these increased stress levels.

Coal mining has evolved into extensive use of continuous mining machines for development and production. This has resulted in an increase in dependence on the versatile continuous miners. The present-day continuous miners are powerful in terms of rated power but are still plagued by wear of bits which hinders development and production as the bits have to be continuously changed at regular intervals. Previous attempts to analyze bit wear has been either restricted to the theoretical approach and or laboratory testing. This paper discusses about the overall aspect of bit and drum design for different conditions. Using the laboratory model set up, numerical models and field testing, a new bit and drum design was analyzed to evaluate their performance under different conditions. The results proved that a newer bit design and drum design were successful in limiting the amount of wear as well as improving the performance of the continuous miner and production.

Water is the main medium for removing impurities from iron ore during wet processing to achieve a higher quality product. However, there is a substantial increase in freshwater consumption due to an increase in demand from the following two factors: in the past 55 years the world population has doubled from 3 to 7.5 billion and crude steel production has increased five times from approximately 350 to 1662 Mt/a (IISI, 2008). Furthermore, social development in developing countries exacerbates water consumption making freshwater an increasingly valuable resource with an average distribution of 70 per cent for agriculture, 20 per cent for industry and only ten per cent for domestic consumption (Hourtolle, 2005; OECD, 2009). Rapidly changing regulations over the access and preservation of water across the world indicates the growing importance of this issue, so the mining industry must adapt to this continual change and must be committed to increasing the efficiency of water usage.Tailings dams receive most of the water used by the process plant. In arid regions where evaporation is high and availability of water low or non-existent, technical solutions other than the conventional tailings dam, such as thickened and/or filtered tailings, exist to optimise the recovery of water and reduce the need for external water consumption. However, these solutions present additional challenges, such as energy consumption and transportation from the process plant to the ultimate storage area.This paper considers a range of alternatives covering thickening and filtering, transportation and storage, water return, closure and rehabilitation. Mining projects in the future will be more affected by the rising cost in water and tighter regulations in accessing water and energy. Good tailings management can contribute significantly to reducing the dependence on these two key commodities (water and electricity), improving the resilience of iron ore projects especially in arid regions and areas with high competition for water.CITATION:Vuillier, C and A Roshdieh, A, 2017. Large seismic events have been reported in mines in the Sudbury mining camp for more than 70 years. Nevertheless, no detailed record of the events has been compiled. In 2008, the Sudbury Regional Seismic Network (SRSN) research project was initiated to collect more accurate data with regard to the magnitude and locations of mining-induced seismic events in and near the mines in the Sudbury Basin. The data is used to better understand the mechanisms of the events and cause-effect relations between mining and seismic events. Through the collection of a central database of large seismic events, new insight is being be gained into why some mines are much more prone to large events than others. Fifteen low cost seismic stations have been distributed throughout the Sudbury basin. The data from each seismic station is uploaded to a central server using the internet. Data recorded on the SRSN is processed on a daily basis, and a weekly summary of blasts and events is issued to project sponsors. Seismic events smaller than local magnitude +1.0 have been identified and located. Event location accuracy is less than 2 kilometres, however, many events have been located less than 1 km from a mine. The SRSN fills a seismic monitoring gap between the in-mine microseismic monitoring systems and the earthquake monitoring system operated by the Geological Survey of Canada. Since July 2008, more than 600 mine blasts and more than 450 mining-induced seismic events have been recorded in the Sudbury basin. This paper primarily discusses the technical aspects of the design and operation of the SRSN. The SRSN is a Canadian Mining Industry Research Organisation (CAMIRO) research project, with industry sponsorship and support from FNX Mining, Itasca Canada, Vale Inco and Xstrata Nickel.

Laboratory-scale tests were undertaken to examine several electrolytes for possible use in separating nickel and cobalt from products being prepared at Nicaro, Cuba. The most extensive work was done with nickel sulfate-ammonium fluoride, ammonium fluoride, ammonium sulfate, and nickel sulfate-boric acid electrolytes. All four electrolytes exhibited some selectivity for dissolving nickel carbonate from Nicaro basic carbonate used for regeneration. The nickel sulfate-ammonium fluoride electrolyte exhibited less selectivity for dissolving nickel carbonate from Nicaro basic carbonate than it did from synthetic mixtures. Ammonium fluoride leaching experiments showed that a low concentration and high temperature gave a good nickel extraction with C. P. reagents; however, this was not confirmed in tests using Nicaro basic carbonate. Electrolytic tests employing ammonium fluoride leach liquors gave no further separation, since approximately 90 percent of the cobalt was deposited at the cathode with the nickel.
