In the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-mm.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystal-lization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,l Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work. The first alloy was taken from regular mill stock that had been rolled from 0.580 in. to 0.376 in. (14.7 mm. to 9.5 mm.) gage, a reduction of 35.1 per cent. This bar (No. 1) had the following composition: Copper, 69.20 per cent.; zinc, 30.76 per cent.; lead, 0.02 per cent.; iron, 0.02 per cent. The second alloy was also taken from mill stock of 0.325 in. (8.25 mm.) gage and was rolled as shown in Table 1, in order to get four bars reduced two, four, six, and eight B. & 5. numbers respectively. This second alloy

Most mines in the Bundamba, North Ipswich, and Rosewood districts of the West Moreton coalfield of south eastern Queensland have installed washing plants during the last five years. Many problems were encountered in their installation, including the small size of washing plant required in many cases, the economical minimum ash content under present and future market requirements, production from a one-product washbox of large and small coal of quality to satisfy both markets, measures to avoid adding unnecessary moisture to the washed slack coals, and excessive middlings in some coals or soft clay in others.INTRODUCTIONIt was fortunate for Brisbane, which was to become the capital of a new State, Queensland, in 1859, and grow into a city of over half a million people by the time of its centenary, that coal was found in abundance almost on its doorstep near Ipswich, the first mine being opened at Redbank in 1843. This was followed by the opening of many more mines in that district and, some 40 years later, in the nearby Rosewood district where high-volatile gas coal was produced (Fig. 1). These discoveries ensured a supply of reasonably priced coal (currently about 85/- per ton delivered) in Brisbane, but the quality is inferior to that of other coals mined in Queensland beyond economic range of Brisbane.Various factors led to an increase in the average ash content of the West Moreton coals during and after the war. Between 1940 and 1952 the gasworks coals rose in average ash from 13 8 per cent to 23·9 per cent and the powerhouse coals from 17·1 per cent to 27·1 per cent. This drift was arrested by the installation of 28 screening and picking plants from 1952 onward, but it became obvious that mechanical cleaning of the coals was essential due to the competitive market for coal and the worsening quality of reserves.

Hydraulic separators are commonly used for particle size classification and gravity concentration of minerals and coal. Unfortunately, the efficiency of these processes can be quite low due to poor equipment design and variations in feed consistency. To help alleviate these problems, an industry-driven R&D program has been undertaken to develop a new generation of hydraulic separators that are more efficient and less costly to operate and maintain. Two of the most promising technologies, the CrossFlow and HydroFloat separators, have now been tested at industrial sites. The data obtained from these sites have been used to illustrate the potential performance improvements that can be realized through the application of these high-efficiency separators.

The PT. Adaro Coal Mine targeted in this research is located in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The coal production of this mine is increasing year, with about 35 M tons of coal produced in 2006. This mine faces many ground control problems, especially instability of the footwall. Large-scale landslides occur often in the footwall; this may be because of weak rock and the effect of footwall rock weathering. Hence, prompt measures must be developed and followed in order to preserve the stability of the footwall and make this mine safe. Additionally, the final pit design is now being reconsidered because of the increasing demand for and high price of coal. With these issues in mind, this paper describes a solution for improving the stability of the footwall and discusses the final pit design based on the results of an on-site investigation and numerical analysis.

Augered, Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles can be an economical, reliable, versatile foundation system. They have also been a part of projects that were behind schedule and the subject of lawsuits. The ACIP pile is a specialty system that is more workmanship dependent than most deep foundation systems and is especially vulnerable to the problems and abuse of poor specifications and contract language. Many of the original specifications were based on grouting methods, and numerous misconceptions have followed the method. The Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) has been the leader in debunking the mystique that has hovered over the method and attempted to standardize the industry through publication of the manuals describing the method and how it should be inspected. DFI should be applauded for taking the lead and producing a reference document that can be used to educate the specification writers, designers, inspectors, and owners. It must be must appreciated that there have been other organizations that would not acknowledge ACIP piles as a legitimate member of the deep foundation family. Some consultants and designers have gone to the extreme of making it policy to not recommend the method for use. This presentation is one practitioner's view of the causes of problems as they can be traced back to the contractual conditions. It is intended to provide a broader and different perspective than those provided by the technical specialists. It does not necessarily reflect the position of the DFI or any of the organizations associated with the ACIP pile industry. It is intended to further the spirit of partnering on every ACIP pile project, to further the acceptance and promote the use of this unique system, for the benefit of all the parties. It should be recognized, however, that all of the participants can and do play a role in getting a project into trouble. My view is that projects that get into trouble usually have an early flaw that leads the project to the edge, and the project participants blindly follow the original mistake right over the cliff like lemmings. This instinctive reaction may be a survival tactic by going along with the group, because any one party that departs from the program or shows a position of weakness is a candidate for sacrifice.

Topography and geology greatly impact the decision of how to plan and operate a surface mine. To extract coal, five primary surface mrning methods are practiced in the United States. These include contour strip. mountamtop removal, area, modified area, and open pit mining methods. The first four approaches are commonly associated with coal mining while open pit techniques, although used in the mining of coal, are more commonly applied to the mining of hard rock, metals, and aggregates. Various sub-routines of the primary surface mining methods are likewrse applied rn the industry.

Analyses of accident records show that a better understanding of very basic strata control principles and practices, by production personnel, will improve worker safety. Workers, lack of knowledge, with respect to aspects of strata control, increases their exposure to such strata control risks. The primary objective of the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) project 02 02 07 was to develop tools for the transfer of strata control knowledge. Four such tools were developed, three of which focused on illiterate underground mine team members who are not yet able to take advantage of the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) learning process (see project outcomes 2, 3 and 4 below). The tools were designed to equip these workers with sufficient knowledge and ability to work safely underground until such time as they can take advantage of the MQA system. Project outcomes: 1 A four-minute video using animation to illustrate the causes and prevention of falls of roof in South African collieries. 2 Software to demonstrate the capability of reconstructing, interactively, accident scenes and actions that have taken place underground in stopes. 3 A strata control bridging course for illiterate mine team workers. 4 Small-scale wooden models that will be used to design life-size mock-up facilities to assist with the above mentioned bridging course. 5 Workshops and presentations to demonstrate the outcomes 1to 4 above.

This paper deals with the concept of a Quality-Assurance Manual, to the ISO-9001 Level, for quarry blasting in the urban environment. A case history of the incident, which led to its development, is presented in addition to three other case histories. These case histories are related to the potential effectiveness of a well thought-out and applied Quality-Assurance Manual in the conclusions. The basic principle, behind the development of a Q-A manual, is to supply a maximum of quality assurance with a minimum of disturbance to the operation of the quarry. This requires that every intervener in the quarry blasting operations, from management to labourer, be made responsible for the quality of their work. This basic goal can be achieved with a minimum of paper work and added bureaucracy. The manual respects the ISO principle that: Q-A Manuals are not recipe books and should allow for continuing technological developments.

River Des Peres Foul water Interceptor (Skinker–McCausland Tunnel) is a gravity sewer tunnel constructed to eliminate dry sewage overflows during high river stages and to improve the wastewater collection and treatment. The original 78-inch (2m)finished diameter Skinker-McCausland Tunnel started as a 21,500 feet (6.5km)interceptor with 13 work, drop and access shafts. The tunnel constructions included soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling in karst formation with maximum overburden of 175 feet (53m). Due to the success of the project, the tunnel alignment was extended another13,361 feet (4.1 km) and 7 new structures by negotiating two additional segments with the contractor and the designers.

Pumice and pumicite are siliceous volcanic substances quite similar in chemical composition , but somewhat different in physical properties , manner of formation , and mode of occurrence . Production in the United States has increased from 23,271 tons valued at $ 94,943 in 1910 , to 56,843 tons valued at $336,099 in 1930. Both pumice and pumicite are included in these figures as it has been impractical to collect statistical data on the separate commodities .

The interaction of, flotation collectors with sulphide mmerals takes place at the solid-solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulphides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidized to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen.The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidized xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulphides is discussed briefly.

INTRODUCTION New York City Water Supply—Background and History Since the 1840s New York City has been developing the largest, and perhaps, the best urban water supply and distribution system in the world in terms of quality and reliability. One of the engineering marvels of the modern world, the New York City water supply and distribution system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in nearby Westchester, Putnam, Ulster, and Orange Counties of New York State. The average daily supplies presently are running at almost 60 m3/sec(about 1,350 million gallons per day). The watershed for the New York City water supply system, under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP), consists of19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes, and covers an area of approximately5,000 square kilometers (about 2,000 square miles) north of New York City. The watershed total available storage capacity is about two billion cubic meters (560 billion gallons) and is divided into three reservoir systems: the Catskill and Delaware watersheds located West of the Hudson River; and the Croton watershed, located east of the Hudson River, see Figure 1. The first element of the system, the Croton Aqueduct, started operations in 1842.Through several updates and expansions, the present-day Croton system was in place by 1911, providing a potential maximum supply of about 15 m3/s (about 340 mgd). The system includes ten reservoirs and three controlled lakes. In the late 1800s, with the tremendous growth of the City, New York City water engineers began to look for additional sources. Between 1907 and 1929, the City acquired water rights and constructed a new 148 km (92 miles) Catskill aqueduct to convey water from the Ashokan Reservoir to the City. "Stillwater Mining Company recovers platinum and palladium from their Nye Montana operations. Mining first commenced at Nye in 1987 at a milling rate of 455 t/d (500 stpd). The plant was expanded in 1995 with the replacement of the ball mill and the addition of flotation capacity to increase mill throughput to 1820 t/d (2000 stpd). The applications for platinum and palladium have increased in recent years particularly in the automotive industry and the supply of the metals has remained fairly constant with prices for both platinum and palladium increasing and remaining very stable. In 1997 Stillwater initiated the expansion of their operations to increase production of platinum and palladium. Projects were initiated to expand production at the Nye operations, increase smelter and refining capacities at the Columbus facilities and to develop the extension of the orebody at the East Boulder site. This paper will discuss the changes at the Nye concentrator which were completed to increase production from 1820 t/d (2000 stpd) to 2730 t/d (3000 stpd) and eliminate some of the process bottlenecks.IntroductionStillwater Mining Company is mining the only significant primary source of PGMs outside of South Africa. The J-M Reef is an extensive mineralized zone containing PGMs that has been traced over a strike length of about 43 km (27 miles) in the southwest region of Montana. Stillwater controls the entire PGM mineralized zone.Johns-Manville geologists discovered palladium and platinum in the early 1970’s. In 1979, a Manville subsidiary entered into a partnership with Chevron, USA to develop the project. In 1 987, operations at the Stillwater property near Nye, Montana commenced."

Within the famous Harrods department store, a new lift shaft has been constructed, servicing a depth of 22m below ground level as well as the existing 6 storeys of the store. The shaft will connect with a new goods tunnel which is to be excavated beneath the shop, as well as new floor space above ground level which has resulted from the infilling of a previously existing lightwell within the store. The construction of the deep shaft while maintaining uninterrupted use of the store by the Client led to a number of innovative solutions being undertaken. Empirical assessments were made of settlements anticipated from the construction process, which took place within a congested environment of existing foundations. Various elements were designed and installed to mitigate the effects of the inevitable ground movement on the surrounding overlying structure, which supported sensitive high quality finishes and mechanical and electrical installations The reinforced concrete lining of the shaft was contained within a cofferdam of minipiles. The minipile placement accuracy (1 in 150) was vital as it could not interfere with the subsequent tunnelling works. As the scheme progressed this became even more critical since the minipiles were needed as support for parts of the permanent works This paper describes:- the high quality placement and control of the minipiled cofferdam, the methods employed in assessing ground movements and the techniques used to mitigate against the effects of these movements.

The sinking and lining of a large mine shaft with 8.0 m i.d. and 1,133 m total depth is described in detail. The ground freezing method was applied to safely sink the shaft through unstable, waterbearing strata. Following a brief introduction to the geological and hydrological conditions and the owner's shaft requirements, is the general technical concept to sink and line the shaft. Particular emphasis is put on the lining system which has to provide stability and absolute watertightness for the lifetime of the shaft, even though mining takes place in its immediate proximity. Machinery and equipment used to execute the work are mentioned and commented. Furthermore, the excavation and lining of the large filling stations using rock anchors and shotcrete are described. Details on performance rates are given.

The molecular structures of isobutyl xanthate (IBX), diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), O-isobutyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IBETC), O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thionocarbamate (IBECTC) and O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thiourea (IBECTU) were fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level with the integral equation formalism for the polarizable continuum model (IEF-PCM) in the aqueous phases. The effects of the polar groups in these thiol molecules on their collecting performances were determined by the energies and compositions of frontier molecular orbitals and the atomic charge values. Our results indicate that the sulfur atom(s) in IBX, DIBDTP, IBETC, IBECTC, or IBECTU molecule is the centre of reactivity. And the collecting abilities of these reagents for copper sulfide minerals follow the order as: IBX > IBECTU ? DIBDTP ? IBECTC > IBETC, and the order of their selectivities against pyrite is suggested as: IBX < DIBDTP < IBETC < IBECTU < IBECTC. The theoretical analysis provides an insight into the collecting powers of these collectors, and offers an atomic scale approach to understand the experimental data available in the literature. The machine-mounted continuous respirable dust monitor (MMCRDM) is a fixed-location area sampling device developed for possible use at the working face of an underground coal mine. This device, based on proprietary technology known as the tapered element oscillating microbalance, has evolved over the past eight years through a cooperative effort of the former Bureau of Mines, MSHA, and the Rupprecht & Patashnick Company in Albany, NY. The capability to measure respirable coal mine dust levels on a continuous basis, rather than depending solely on periodic samples obtained from the traditional coal mine dust samplers, has been a goal in the mining industry for nearly two decades. Recently, an extensive series of laboratory and underground tests was conducted by NIOSH with the cooperation of MSHA and coal operators to test the performance of the MMCRDM In preliminary laboratory testing, the MMCRDM seemed to work well. However, in every underground test, when compared to reference samplers placed close to the inlet, the MMCRDM failed to meet the 25% accuracy criterion specified in the contract under which it was developed. Two reasons explain this failure: First, in most tests the bias (the relative discrepancy between the average MMCRDM concentration and the average reference sampler concentration) was too great. Second, the variability of the samplers used for reference comparison was too large. Finally, the underground testing of the MMCRDMs showed that they are quite unreliable at this stage of development. In the majority of mine tests, no more than 10 shifts of data were taken before the MMCRDM failed to function properly. Major breakdowns, requiring the return of the MMCRDM to the factory for repairs, occurred on average every 28 days. To be considered mine-worthy, MMCRDM reliability must be substantially improved.
