Since the Toronto conference in May 2002, the International Council on Mining and Minerals (ICMM) has made progress on the road to sustainability. Fifteen of the world?s largest mining and metal producing companies and twenty-five associations have made a long term commitment to ICMM to improve the environmental and social sustainability of their activities. Sir Robert Wilson (Rio Tinto) assumed the chairmanship of ICMM in October 2002. By December 2002, the Council had approved a Strategic Vision and an operating plan for 2003. Both have been posted on the ICMM website (www.icmm.com). ICMM?s Operating Plan sets out three priority tasks: - Providing strategic leadership to achieve improved sustainable development performance in the mining, minerals and metals industry. - Contributing to international policy discussions on cross-cutting issues of importance to the industry, in collaboration with national and commodity associations. - Promoting dialogue and partnership with other organizations to catalyze sector?wide sustainability initiatives.

The dissolution of the naturally occurring mineral zircon (ZrSiO4) is examined after ball milling it with magnesium oxide for up to 100 hours in a laboratory mill. There was little effect on the solubility for the initial two hours where size reduction of the zircon was considered to be the dominant effect. Beyond two hours the dissolution increased as a function of the square root of milling time. X-ray diffraction of the powders did not reveal the identity of the soluble phase. However, a nanocrystalline phase was present after milling and this is thought to be the soluble phase.

Polymeric matrix composites with dispersed hard particles are being as wear resistant tools in industrial polishing operations. In the present work, the microstructure of epoxy composites with different amounts of embedded diamond particles, up to 30 wt.%, was investigated for the effect on fracture characteristics. It was found that the introduction of diamond particles promoted an increase the porosity of the epoxy matrix. Moreover, the particle morphology associated with a non-uniform distribution within the matrix was responsible for the nucleation of cracks that caused rupture of the composites.

The Goldex Mine is an underground gold mine using a unique mining method where a single very large stope is being created. In order to maintain stability of the walls and roof of the stope which is 450m, 250m high and up to 120m thick, ore is left in the stope as long as possible and acts as backfill would do. At many occasions during the mining sequence, the walls will be exposed on height ranging from 30 meters up to 250 meters. A monitoring system comprising in-stope laser surveys, a seismic system and an array of extensometers and sloughmeters all remotely connected to surface is used to observe the shape and evolution of the stope. This paper will focus on the results obtained following some of the large blasts and on the long term monitoring of the stope.

This paper characterizes the copper cycle, that is, the flows of copper entering and leaving the African economy over a one-year period (1994). The major flows over the entire life-cycle of copper are examined; these include production (mining, milling and refining), fabrication of semi-products and manufacturing of finished products, use, and the waste management system. The results reveal that substantial amounts of copper (of order705 Gg/yr) are mined in Africa; of that amount, about 70 per cent is exported following processing, 18 per cent is utilized by African fabricators, and 12 per cent is discarded. The flows of copper products from African fabricators and product imports from other continents exceed product discards by large amounts. This difference, about 0.25 kg Cu/capita/yr on average, is added to in-use stock, largely as wire, plumbing tube, and in electronics. Some 65 per cent of the copper in discard flows is contained in electrical and electronic products, where it is relatively easy to collect and process for reuse. About a third of the copper discard flows known is recycled. The actual percentage is almost certainly higher because of informal (and unrecorded) recycling. Much of the remaining discarded copper is diluted into the municipal waste stream, where recovery and recycling are probably not economically justified. "A paste backfill plant and underground piping distribution system was commissioned at the Brunswick Mine in June, 1998. Concentrator tailings, composed mainly of pyrite and lesser amounts of silicate minerals with a P80 of 37um (45 YO-20 pm), are pumped to the backfill plant. The backfill plant uses conventional thickening and disc filtering to dewater the solids, which are then mixed with binder in twin screw mixers. The paste is discharged through a gob hopper and one of three boreholes by gravity. Approximately 65% of the concentrator tailings will be placed underground at full production. The remaining thickened tailings will be pumped to an existing impoundment area. Application of paste technology will completely replace the use of cemented rock fill in the mine by the end of 1998.The design capacity of the paste backfill plant is a total of 360 dmtph of cemented paste through two parallel production lines. The plant is highly instrumented and controlled via a hybrid Programmable Logic Controller (PLC-5) and Fisher ProVox Distributed Control System that is in communication with the property information highway. Video and audio signals from the underground system are carried to the surface plant via a leaky feeder communications/fiber optic system.The underground distribution system consists of a network of 200mm diameter boreholes and piping. There are approximately 3.5km of boreholes and 5.5km of piping in the system. To minimize pressures, the greatest piping length from any borehole is approximately 400m with all piping being open-ended. There are no valves in the entire paste distribution system.Construction of the plant, including installation of piping to and from the plant and preparation of the underground distribution system, was completed in less than one year from the time of management approval for the $M 22.3 project."

Limited geographically by size and geo-logically by origin, smaller countries and territories of the Caribbean are nonetheless engaging in efforts to encourage the initiation of mineral and mineral-related industries. Petroleum dominates the minerals sector, which otherwise consists principally of minor quantities of construction-oriented materials, usually for local consumption. The increased cost of petroleum has adversely affected most of the world, but these islands with their economies precariously balanced on the uncertainties of agriculture and tourism are especially vulnerable to petroleum's direct and indirect costs. In 1975, the Government of Antigua acquired the financially troubled West Indies Oil Company refinery at St. Johns. The refinery ceased operations in 1976. In 1979, negotiations were underway to sell Ashland Oil Co. an interest in the small, 20,000-barrel-per-day refinery for $6.6 million. In 1977, Antigua granted petroleum exploration rights to the Antigua Mineral Exploration Company, which planned to drill in an undefined offshore area, possibly between Antigua and Barbuda. The company expected to spend about $200,000 per year through 1982. There have been no reports on its activity.

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. Desde 1995 la planta de Lixiviación de Toquepala desarrolló un sistema de control automático para los procesos de extracción por solventes y electrodepositación. Sin embargo, con el desarrollo de la tecnología y las nuevas versiones de control, dicha plataforma se tornó arcaica. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la modernización de los sistemas relacionados con el control y supervisión de las áreas de extracción por solventes, depositación electrolítica y áreas auxiliares. Como consecuencia de ello, se incrementó la operatividad, disponibilidad y fiabilidad con cero paradas por perturbaciones eléctricas, así como redujo el tiempo utilizado para el diagnóstico y solución de problemas.

It is the purpose of this paper to point out conditions as they exist in the merchandizing of coal, to compare these conditions with methods in use by competitive producers of coal substitutes, and to present briefly some suggestions which may help the individual operator to market more coal in the immediate future, while we are waiting for the scientist and research worker, who are now busy on coal betterment , to produce in a practical way the results which they now write about in such glowing terms. While it may be unnecessary to call the attention of coal operators to the present deplorable condition of the industry, it might be well to impress upon our members in other branches of mining, as well as upon the public at large, the seriousness of the situation. Emerging from the war and the period of reconstruction that followed, the coal industry found itself with too many mines and too many men for normal conditions. To make matters worse, the interruptions in deliveries caused by strikes, the unfavourable publicity caused by socialistic propaganda, and the repeated governmental investigations, made the market a fertile field for coal substitutes which were not so handicapped. These substitutes were well advertised, and were marketed in an up-to-date manner, furnishing an example from which the coal operator could well profit. Now, whether or not there is agreement as to the cause or causes of this condition, there can be no doubt that we are today face to face with the fact that the sale of coal has not kept pace with the sale and use of other commodities. Had it done so, we would ere this have been able to take care of the surplus labour and work our mines at least approximately full time.

Illumination is essential for mine safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to detect hazards associated with slips/trips/falls and powered haulage. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting mine illumination research to improve miner safety by enhancing a miner?s ability to see mine hazards. Thus far, 16 papers have been published covering diverse topics such as cap lamps, machine-mounted lighting, glare, lighting maintenance, and light-emitting diode (LED) technology issues. NIOSH has also developed an LED cap lamp, LED area lighting, and a Visual Warning System (VWS). This paper provides an overview of the improvements from NIOSH-developed lighting that include: 94% faster trip hazard detection with the NIOSH LED cap lamp; 79% faster peripheral motion detection to detect pinning/striking hazards; no increase in glare; 71% faster machine movement hazard detection with the VWS. Current research is described concerning an LED cap lamp for metal/nonmetal miners, illumination for refuge alternative deployment and inspection, and whether lighting could be used to improve miner escape and rescue in smoke. Lastly, future possibilities of using lighting to improve miner safety are described.

"The 34th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) was held July 28–30 at the Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa in Morgantown, WV. Ground control experts have gathered at this location since 1981 to share ideas and successes for improving designs and technologies to enhance the stability of surface and underground mining operations. Ground control is important to all mining operations but is particularly crucial to underground mining to ensure miner safety and operational viability.The year’s event had 240 registered attendees with 20 pecent of that attendance being from the mining industry. A remarkable number of industry representatives attended given the challenges currently faced by the mining industry. A true testament to the value of the conference, the performance of Tom Barczak and Steve Tadolini as co-chairs and the drawing power of the many exceptional speakers that have attended the annual event for many years.The conference operates under the direction of a board of directors with the cooperation, wisdom and assistance of a large organizing committee. The number of Persons fatally injured in the petroleum industry in California in 1930 was 50, a decrease of 20.6 per cent from 1929, when 63 men accidentally lost their lives. The decrease in the number of fatalities for 1930 has caused the first downward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1927 and is coincident with a period of little active development in new fields, the shutting in of many wells, and reduced activity in the older fields of the State. That a direct relationship exists between the number of accidental deaths and the rapidity of new field development is particularly emphasized by the fact that in 1929, a year of intensive field development in California, 48 men were killed in the drilling and producing division, whereas in 1930, a year of less development work, only 25 men were killed in this division. The figures for the average number of drilling and producing wells in 1930 decreased appreciably from comparable figures for 1929 and a greater percentage of producing wells were shut-in in 1930 than in 1929.

The Upper Waimangaroa mining permit is part of the Buller Coalfield and lies on the eastern side of the Stockton-Denniston Plateau. The mining permit area is estimated to contain a total in-ground coal resource of 58 million tonnes, contained within 13 separate coal resource .blocks. The coal is Bituminous High Volatile B rank with export potential as semi soft coking or thermal coal. The Northern Opencast mine is the first mine proposed for Upper Waimangaroa and consists of the three resource blocks at the northern end of the permit area. The highwall of the mine will cut into the Mt William Range resulting in overburden cover of up to 150 metres in some areas. The ability to rehabilitate the area after mining was a major consideration in the design of the mine. The Northern Opencast area has been geologically mapped, extensively drilled and effectively modelled using Vulcan software. Three distinct coal seams are present and the mineable in situ resource is estimated at 8.7 million tonnes of which approximately 7.1 million tonnes is likely to be recoverable. It is proposed that this resource will be mined using opencast methods and the void will be backfilled with overburden. The life of the mine is at this stage estimated at 19 years based on an annual production of 500,000 tonnes at 1.8% sulphur and the Upper Waimangaroacoal will be blended with low sulphur coal from the Greymouth Coalfield to meet export specifications. The Northern Opencast area contains a range of native flora and fauna and physical features which make it an environmentally significant area. Mining will totally modify the area, thus an effective rehabilitation scheme is an integral part of the mine plan. Various rehabilitation methods will be used, and wherever possible, the backfilled areas will be rehabilitated so as to resemble the original area as closely as possible.

Much attention in controlling blast vibrations has been centred on the probability of causing damage to structures in the area adjacent to where blasting is carried out. In most cases these structures are residential properties and the effect of the vibrations on the occupiers has not been studied to any great extent. This paper looks at the sources of disturbance caused by blasting and their psychological effect. A comparison of ground vibration levels for compliance is examined within the framework of structural and human response.

Viscosities of quasi-ternary CaO-SiO2-CrOxmelts in contact with metallic chromium were measured by the rotating cylinder method up to 1750ºC. Twelve slag compositions were selected in the composition range 20–55 wt% SiO2, 10–45 wt% CaO and 10–60 wt% CrOx. Estimation of the amounts of CrO and Cr2O3was made by regression analysis based on the earlier data. Professor Iida’s (Osaka University) viscosity model was applied and model parameters (0CrO,CrOand Cr2O3) were evaluated. The Iida model gave good consistency with the measured viscosity values.

Mine site infrastructure for storage and delivery of hydrogen must be standardized and acceptable for routine and safe industrial use before fuel cell technology is adopted as a major power source. An initial study reviewed possible options for production, storage and delivery of hydrogen for underground equipment. The high level review included assessment of economic, operational, technical, and health and safety risks. Following this review, a subsequent theoretical study to select typical minesite infrastructure and for construction at an operating research mine is outlined.

Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.
