A patented process for agglomeration of Smelter ESP dusts is described. Addition of suitable binders followed by compaction, transforms fine, difficult to handle material into a dry, flowable agglomerate suitable for plant reentry. Details for the agglomeration process metallurgy and laboratory pilot plant testing are discussed. An example of full scale plant operations is described.

The spatial distribution of copper grades at the Mansa Mina project is highly variable due to the presence of high grade copper/silver/arsenic breccia bodies. Copper grades within the breccia bodies tend to average about 4.5% copper while grades in the surrounding stockwork average about 1.0%. The breccia is known to occur in the vicinity of significant controlling structures, however, the outline and therefore the thickness of the bodies are far from regular. Due to the high grade of these bodies a significant proportion of the value of the project is derived from the breccia tonnages. The irregularity in the outlines/thickness translates into an uncertainty in the breccia tonnage and therefore in the value of the project. Acknowledging the economic importance of the breccia bodies and the risk associated with the breccia tonnage uncertainty, significant additional drilling has been proposed to both understand the spatial distribution of the breccias and reduce project risk. The costs associated with this additional drilling are not inconsequential; thus, a reasonable question is ‘what value is derived from this additional drilling’? To obtain an answer to this important question, a simulation approach is applied. First the deposit is simulated using the existing drilling and the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Next the proposed drilling program is simulated and the simulated data are added to the existing data. Using this expanded data set a second simulation of the deposit is created and once again the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Using this approach, the reduction in the uncertainty in the resource can be determined. To convert this reduction in uncertainty (or reduction in risk) in the stated resource into a dollar value, a method of defining the increase in the project rate of return necessary to account for risk is presented. Using the two different rates of return, the difference in project NPV and hence the value of additional drilling is determined.

The relationship between support performance parameters and parameters representative of mining and roof conditions is characterised by uncertainty, non-linearity and dependence, so the theory of artificial neural networks was selected as a basis for shield design. A computer program based on a back-propagation training algorithm was written to derive the weighting factors between inputs and outputs from field data; once these had been established two mathematical models were developed to describe the relationship. Back-calculation of field data indicates that the results generated from the neural network models are much more accurate than those derived by traditional methods and can be used with a higher level of confidence. The support density, possible yield frequency of face supports and interval of periodic roof weighting under specific mining and roof conditions can be determined by application of the models

Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

To deftne the capabilities of a nonexplosive excavation concept, the Bureau of Mines conducted reduced-scale laboratory tests of a mechanical excavation tool called a rock splitter. The splitter investigated was capable of applying combinations of radial and axial loads to rock when placed in a predrilled hole. Experiments conducted with the tool in concrete, limestone, and granite proved it capable of excavating all three materials. Break geometry in these three materials was the same, which encourages the prediction of performance in all rocks. The design of the radial-axial loading splitter's feather components significantly affected the tool's performance. It appears the design of this in-hole component should be tailored for the rock to be excavated.

As the mining industry continues to hire young professionals to supplant the growing number of retirees, a well-developed engineering curriculum, coupled with practical, real-world training, can prepare mining engineering graduates to make meaningful contributions in the industry. Successful companies can be measured not only by their reserve base and annual production but also by their retention of mining engineering graduates with zero to five years of operational experience. My personal experience in the industry during the last five years has been varied and rewarding. The knowledge and experience I have gained have taught me valuable lessons that prepared me for my current role.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream acidity is widely used in MIW (mining influenced water). Tailoring pH (a measure of acidity) finds application for controlling key chemistry in both process and waste streams. Traditional lime addition for neutralization and precipitation is most often used but has high reagent costs and results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. A new adaptation of BPS’s patented DEMET™ technology (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform offers a potentially improved and “reagentless” alternative to traditional chemical addition for pH adjustment. Electricity rather than chemical addition utilized in BPS’s proprietary approach controllably tailors target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost processing technique yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. BPS’s “green” approach may yield lower operating (OPEX) and life cycle costs and significant reductions (up to 50%) in sludge generation compared to conventional lime treatment. It can also allow new opportunities to generate revenue via selective recovery of valuable processing byproducts. Specific savings and revenues depend on the target site chemistries, details, and processing goals. A more detailed discussion of the process and its operational principles may be found in Reference One.[1] Here application of the BPS treatment to POx (Pressure Oxidation) leaching as an alternative to traditional chemical addition is examined. An example operation process flow for gold mining is considered.[2] Promising processing points for potentially replacing conventional processes with DEMET are noted. The possibilities for lowering OPEX costs, lessening sludge creation, and capturing various valuable byproducts and residuals are examined. Financial life cycle benefit estimates of the principal gains provided by DEMET application to the example operation are noted. Extension and generalization of the analyses to a wider range of scenarios is explored."

Boulders, frequently found in tunnels excavated through soils, can pose major problems for full face TBMs in terms of slowing or halting the tunnel advance, cutter damage, and abrasive wear. The paper aims to consider the problem as a whole, from the geological characteristics of boulder sites, to the appropriate physical design of theTBM, and its operation in boulder-laden soils. In addition, visualization of boulders and other subsurface obstructions by seismic methods and ground penetrating radar are reviewed. The paper will assist the construction planner in assessing the risks and preparing appropriate specifications.

"This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2016 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY), and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2016 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2016 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals, (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash) and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2016 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data and government-funded exploration activities."

The Climax Molybdenum Mine, located near Leadville, Colorado, is the site of a lengthy mining history spanning more than 80 years. In the 1960’s, extraction of molybdenum from oxide ore located adjacent to the massive molybdenite sulfide deposit resulted in the construction of an earthen core dam to impound fine-grained oxide tailing in the Eagle River Valley. Through recognized value of water storage and reclamation opportunities, a tailing removal project was initiated in 1993 to convert the impoundment facilities to a post-mining beneficial land use of developed water resources. An evaluation of the effect residual materials and lake dynamics would have on in-stream water quality was performed. Eagle Park Reservoir stands as a model for future reclamation efforts that involve water delivery to highly sensitive receiving waters. This paper provides a case study on project development, the evolution of water quality assessment, and the regulatory framework that contributed to this project’s success.

"This paper was written during part of the author’s student co-op with Cargill Salt at its Avery Islandunderground salt mine in Louisiana. Blasting salt is a unique type of blasting that is different than blasting other rock types. The plastic nature of salt, along with its large swell factor make salt a challenge to blast. The Cargill salt mines use and have tested a variety of different methods for breaking salt in an efficient manner, however these blasting methods are rarely used in other operations nor talked about today."

This report describes the development of the instructional design and content of a training program for shaft construction miners and supervisors. The recommended training approach is based on the results of a needs, task, and competency analysis of the jobs performed by conventional shaft sinking and raise drill personnel. Learning objectives were derived from the task analysis and the appropriate training delivery system was chosen using a selection technique which employed learning algorithms. The training described is aimed at improving the safety and efficiency of constructing shafts by new hire and experienced miners and supervisors. A self-paced, self-teaching, modular approach to training, using criterion-referenced tests was proposed. Recommendation was made to divide the training into three parts: Orientation and Safety; Task Instruction; and Practical Exercise. Training requirements for conventional shaft sinking and raise drilling were described. Training program content was detailed in the form of module and lesson design approaches. In addition, the report recommends a method for developing, implementing and validating the training program. The authors conclude that such an implementation would meet the major objectives of improving the safety and efficiency of shaft construction work operations.

One of the major problems of mineral exploration is the ability to reliably distinguish between uneconomic mineral deposits and economic mineralization. While the mining industry uses many geophysical methods to locate the mineral deposits, until recently, there was no reliable technology for mineral resources identification and characterization. The main goal of this project is to develop a new geophysical technique for subsurface material characterization, mineral exploration and mineral discrimination, based on electromagnetic methods. The proposed new technique is based on examining the spectral induced polarization effects in electromagnetic data using the modern distributed acquisition systems and advanced methods of 3-D modeling and inversion. The recovered parameters of the relaxation model will be used for the discrimination of different rocks, and in this way will provide an ability to distinguish between uneconomic mineral deposits and zones of economic mineralization using geophysical remote sensing technology (Zonge, 1976). The proposed research and development is undertaken using multi-partner collaboration between the University of Utah, four major mining companies, Kennecott Exploration, BHP Billiton World Exploration Inc., Placer Dome Inc., Phelps Dodge Exploration, and Zonge Engineering Inc., which is equipment manufacturer and service provider to the mining industry. The multi-partner collaboration between the academic institution, the University of Utah, and mining industry helps to identify the appropriate mining target and conduct the field experiment for practical demonstration of the developed new technology, which is an important part of the this project.

A computerized system (SCAPEVIEWER) based on landscape indices and artificial intelligence techniques is proposed in order to classify landscape images into various categories according to the quality of the pictured scenery. Photographs (totally 108) from various landscapes have been clustered, from seven experts in accordance to the mean estimation of landscape quality, into distinctive (C1), typical or common (C2), and indistinctive (C3). For each of the landscape photographs, ten (10) environmental and operational indices have been selected and determined, corresponding to visibility (V), naturalness (N), relief (R), flora quantity (FC), flora quality (F), water (W), skyline (SL), visual entities (G), season (S), and viewer position (P). These landscape indices are fed to a classifier. The classifier is a feed forward Neural Network (NN) trained by a novel hybrid method combining genetic algorithms and the back-propagation algorithm with adaptive learning rate and momentum. A total classification rate of 93.5% has been achieved, using only 8 input neurons. The discarded input neurons correspond to the indices S, and P. The pilot system SCAPEVIEVER has shown the feasibility of landscape photograph classification into three categories (C1, C2, and C3) according to the landscape quality, selecting simultaneously the most robust indices, by means of a computerized system combining the knowledge of an expert with a NN based classifier.

Se desarrollaron materiales compuestos de matriz polimérica para toberas en cohetes; con dos zonas: una térmica para soportar elevadas temperaturas de combustión y una estructural que resista los esfuerzos generados. La zona térmica se elaboró con materiales de comportamiento ablativo, probados a temperaturas de hasta 2950°C durante dos minutos, los cuales fueron reforzados con polvo cerámico y/o subproducto de la industria siderúrgica (cerámico 2). Con base en los resultados obtenidos del comportamiento de térmico y de conductividad térmica del material ablativo, se construyó la zona estructural en materiales compuestos fibroreforzados (vidrio y carbono) con matriz polimérica. Los moldes se diseñaron en SolidWorks y se fabricaron por prototipado en ABS rápido y se elaboraron machos disgregables en poliuretano. En la zona térmica se usó un procedimiento de vaciado con vibración con diferentes tipos de matrices (poliéster, vinilester, caucho silicona) y de laminación para la zona estructural. Se evaluó el desempeño mediante simulación de las condiciones reales de operación mediante llama de oxicorte y quemador de ACPM, observando el efecto en la pérdida de peso, espesor, diferencial de temperatura, cambio de propiedades mecánicas, etc.; encontrándose un positivo comportamiento del sistema con matriz de resina vinilester reforzado con polvo cerámico 1 y buenos resultados con cerámico 2, así como una estabilidad en la zona estructural construida con fibras de vidrio y carbono. An improved technique has been developed for the deoxidation of palladium with aluminum which is especially suitable for use in making small castings with an induction-melting and casting machine. The effect of various crucible linings on the efficiency of the residual deoxidizer and accompanying oxide film in protecting palladium against oxidation during remelting also has been examined; the preferred crucible lining consists of zirconia cement. THE objective of this work was to develop a simple method of deoxidizing induction-melted palladium which would be suitable for use by manufacturers of jewelry and other small castings. In a common method of deoxidizing torch-melted palladium a piece of aluminum foil is dropped on the surface of the molten metal. If a film is present, which is usually the case, it must first be removed by oxidizing the molten metal thoroughly because it would interfere with the entry of the aluminum into the melt. Removal of the film is probably facilitated by a mild fluxing action of the silica crucibles which are used for torch-melting. However, removal of an alumina film from molten palladium in the crucibles normally used for induction melting is a much slower process and it became necessary to modify the de-oxidation procedure. In the modified procedure the charge is simply melted and the desired amount of aluminum, crimped to one end of a tungsten wire, is plunged through the film into the palladium and the wire immediately withdrawn. The trace of tungsten which dissolves along with the aluminum can be avoided, if considered objectionable, by using a palladium wire. In view of the persistence of the alumina film under the conditions of induction-melting it also was decided to ascertain the efficiency of this film in protecting palladium against oxidation during repeated remelting and casting. Melting Equipment and Materials The equipment used for melting and casting consisted of an Ecco GC:6, 6 to 8-kva high-frequency converter and an Ecco M34B centrifugal casting machine. This unit is being increasingly used for making jewelry and dental castings and it also has been found useful in making exploratory melts of a variety of nickel alloys, for which purpose it is well suited on account of its speed of melting and economy of material. A description of the machine and its operation will be published elsewhere.' A common palladium jewelry alloy, 95.5 palladi-um-4.5 ruthenium (referred to as "palladium" in the trade), was selected for the deoxidation tests. It was available as melting stock which had been melted in air to free it from oxidizable impurities, and also as clean scrap from previous melts which had been deoxidized with aluminum. The latter was thought to be typical of clean "palladium" scrap to be found in a manufacturing jeweler's establishment and it is also similar to one brand of "casting palladium." By the same token, the oxidized melting stock corresponds to "casting palladium" after the latter has been melted and thoroughly oxidized: Pure aluminum wire (99.9 pet), 0.032 in. diam; 1 in. = 0.036 g. Scrap tungsten wire, 0.014 to 0.020 in. diam. Argon, commercial water-pumped; 99.9 pet pure Experimental Procedure Samples of about 50 to 75 g of the palladium alloy were melted in a crucible lined with a proprietary refractory alumina cement. Some charges were melted in air, others in argon. The oxidized melting stock was melted and solidified a number of times in order to remove as much oxygen as possible before deoxidizing, but this treatment was unnecessary in the case of scrap. This Bureau of Mines publication reviews the structural characteristics of crystalline phases and phase equilibria data for the system NaC1-KC1-AlC13-NaF-KF-AlF3, which encompasses a large number of molten salt fluxes currently used in aluminum recycling. Its purpose is to provide guidelines for research into the relationships between molten salt compositions and their physical properties, notably vapor pressures, densities, surface tensions, and viscosities, knowledge of which is essential to maximizing fluxing efficiencies and metal recovery and minimizing hazardous emissions and disposal problems. In addition, this report describes experimental determinations of sub-solidus compatibility relationships in the system, which is of the quaternary reciprocal type, containing 12 different stable 4-phase assemblages in the solid state. The compatibility diagram serves to define the important compositional planes across which important changes in properties are likely to occur.

The utilization of large diameter drilled holes for mine shafts seems to have had its beginning in Europe about 1850 (28) where the mining industries of Germany and The Netherlands first used drilled shafts. Recent shafts in softer formations of diameters as large as 25 feet and as deep as 1, 700 feet have been drilled in both The Netherlands and Germany. The first shaft drillers utilized cable tool or churn drilling techniques which limit both hole diameters and drilling speeds. Though some churn drilling of shafts is still performed, rotary drilling has been the dominant technique for many years.

"Mount Milligan mine is located in northern British Columbia. The concentrator employs conventional SABC grinding circuit with bulk sulphide flotation processes. Commissioning started in September of 2013 and nameplate production of 60,000 TPD was reached in the fourth quarter of 2015. As is typical with many mill ramp ups, bottlenecks developed as throughput increased. Since then, plant modifications and new control philosophies in the comminution and flotation circuits have been implemented and evaluated. The mine-to-mill collaboration played a key role in reaching target throughput rates by improving blast fragmentation and implementing temporary pre-crushing. Results of the projects as well as ongoing challenges/bottlenecks and solutions will be discussed.IntroductionMount Milligan Mine is a copper-gold producer located approximately 253 km northwest of Prince George in British Columbia. Production commenced in September 2013 and reached nameplate capacity of 60,000 TPD in December 2015. Average head grades for the mine life average 0.18% Cu and 0.39 g/t Au.Circuit DesignOriginal process design began with run-of-mine ore from the pit crushed through a 60-110 gyratory crusher, conveyed to a live ore stockpile and fed to the mill via four variable apron feeders. The concentrator circuit employs SAG mill - Ball mill - Pebble Crusher (SABC) grinding configuration to grind the ore down to a target P80 of ~200µm. It is then fed to two parallel trains of flotation tanks, each consisting of five 200 m3 tank cells with the first two being roughers and last three being scavengers. Concentrate streams from roughers and scavengers are separately reground with a closed circuit Tower mill and two open circuit ISA mills operating in parallel, respectively.Three stages of cleaners upgrade roughers/scavenger products to 25% Cu followed by a cleaner scavenger stage. The final concentrate is then thickened and filtered to approximately 9% moisture and shipped off site (Figure 1)."
