"Geochemical characterisation is done based upon the geology and metallurgical batch testing prior to commencement of the operation of the plant.  Tailings repository design is based upon geochemical assessment of the waste material, as well as the geomechanical issues associated with storing the waste. The resultant conceptual and detailed design is incorporated into the environmental impact statement (EIS), upon which mine approval is based. The entire environmental monitoring and harm mitigation program, which is usually a condition of the Mine Lease approval, is based upon the applicability of the original characterisation.Tacit to this process is that there is no change in the geochemistry of the tailings, i.e. no change in the implications for acid & metalliferous or saline/neutral mine drainage (AMD/SNMD) generation. But any changes in milling and processing can have a substantive impact on the geochemical behaviour of the tailings metallurgy, and potentially render an operation non-compliant within the conditions of the mine license.Environmental and statutory approval implications for continuous improvements of metallurgy need to be understood because unintended consequences could cost more than the benefits of the improvement, and in some cases cost more than all the profit made from the mine.  Examples uncovered during audit and consultant practice will be presented together with a process to ensure implications for adverse environmental harm and license conditions are fully considered.*This paper is only available for individual download. A method is presented for predicting the performance of water flooding operations in depleted, or nearly depleted, petroleum reservoirs. The method makes use of permeability variations and the vertical distribution of productive capacity. From these two parameters can be calculated the produced water cut versus the oil recovery. Derivations of the mathematical analogy is shown and sample calculations and curves of prediction are presented. Comparison is made of the predicted and actual performance of a typical 5-spot in an Illinois water flood. INTRODUCTION The use of water as a flooding medium in both depleted and "flush" oil reservoirs is gaining greater recognition and acceptance. Many of the shallower fields, depleted by primary production, have been and are being subjected to water injection in order to obtain some part of the large volume of oil remaining after primary production. Some of the earlier water flood installation proved highly discouraging and the value of water flooding was often questioned. Many of these earlier floods were haphazardly selected and developed as little was known of the physical characteristics and contents of the producing formations. The prior evaluation of the flood performance was impossible. During the past decade the development of the required reservoir engineering tools-—core analysis, reservoir fluid analysis, electric logs, fluid flow formulae, etc.—has allowed the engineer to construct and apply the methods which are presently being used to evaluate the economic and mechanical susceptibility of a reservoir to flooding. This discussion will present a method for taking into account the effect of permeability variations in predicting the performance of water floods in depleted reservoirs. PERMEABILITY AND CAPACITY DISTRIBUTION It is generally agreed by most investigators that in a single phase system fluid will flow in a porous and permeable medium in proportion to the permeability of the medium. Producing formations are usually highly irregular in permeability, both vertically and horizontally. However, zones of higher or lower permeability are often found to exhibit lateral continuity. Thus, while structurally comparable stringers in adjacent wells may differ several fold in permeability values, they usually bear resemblance as being part of a general continuous higher or lower permeability section. It is generally agreed that where such stratification of permeability exists, injected water sweeps first the zones of higher permeability, and it is in these zones that "break-through" first occurs in the producing well. It is a basic assurnption of the presently described method that penetration of a water front follows the individual permeability variations as if such variations were continuous from input to producing well. This is admittedly not rigorously true, but can be justified as making possible a simplifying mathematical approach to an otherwise extremely complicated three dimensional flow problem. As a basis for study of the lateral flow of fluids in formations of irregular permeability, the irregularities may be conveniently represented by a permeability distribution curve and a capacity distribution curve. In obtaining these curves, the permeability values, regardless of their structural position in the formation, are rearranged in order of decreasing permeability. If these permeability values so arranged are plotted against the cumulative thickness, a permeability distribu- tion curve is obtained. This curve may then be likened to a "smoothed" permeability profile of the formation. In making comparison between different distribution curves it is convenient to state the permeabilities in terms of the ratio of the actual permeability values to the average permeability of the formation. These ratios termed "dimensionless permeabilities", are used in this paper rather than the permeabilities in terms of millidarcys. The capacity distribution curve is a lot of the cumulative capacity (starting with the highest permeabilities) versus the cumulative thickness. The capacity and thickness are given as fractions of the total capacity and thickness. Mathematically, the capacity distribution is the intergration of the permeability distribution curve. In practice it is convenient to first obtain the capacity distribution curve and derive from it a smoothed dimen-sionaless permeability curve. The method of obtaining the capacity distribution curve is illustrated in the successive column of Table 1, in which capacity and thickness are derived as fractions of their respective totals. If only a small number of permeability values are available, it is generally desirable to smooth the resultant curve. This has been done to give the capacity distribution curve shown in Figure 1. The differentiation of the capacity distribution curve to obtain the permeability distribution curve is shown in Table 2. Here, the capacity values are read from the smoothed curve at intervals of cumulative thickness, and the increments of capacity are divided by the increments of thickness to obtain the dimensionless permeability, K. Due to this stepwise procedure of calculation these premeability values must be plotted at the midpoints of the successive increments of thickness. The curve so obtained from these data is shown in Figure 1. The total area under the K' curve is equal to unity.

"Transalloys is a silicomanganese (SiMn) producer located in South Africa, and uses only local manganese ores to produce SiMn alloy. The plant operates five open submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) with an annual capacity of 180 000 t of saleable SiMn.Maintaining tap-holes is critical for effective furnace operation, allowing proper drainage of the furnace with minimal operator interference. Using a claygun and drill arrangement installed at each furnace, tapping occurs every four hours. Tap-holes are maintained through mickey replacement and brick repairs. Three furnaces have SiC tap-holes and two have graphite tap-holes.This paper gives a review of SAF operation, furnace and tap-hole design, daily tapping operation, and maintenance practices for repairing tap-holes.IntroductionDefining tap-hole life cycle, Steenkamp et al., (2016) highlighted four main steps: installation during furnace relines, day-to-day operations, tap-hole maintenance, and tap-hole repair. The authors argued that the design of the tap-hole area should allow for all four stages in the tap-hole life-cycle. Design principles for each stage were presented using silicomanganese (SiMn) production as a case study. Here we present a further analysis of the case study by providing practical examples of how the tap-hole life-cycle is managed at Transalloys during the design, operation, and maintenance of submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) applied in the production of SiMn.BackgroundTransalloys is the largest producer of SiMn in Africa. Its smelter complex is based outside the town of eMalahleni, in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. Transalloys was commissioned in the mid- 1960s as a high- and low-carbon ferrochromium plant based on the Perrin process. In 1967 the plant was converted to SiMn production because of constraints in the ferrochrome market (Basson, Curr, and Gericke, 2007; Bezemer, 1995). Today, the installed production capacity is 180 000 t of SiMn annually. Plant operations consists of five SAFs (see ratings in Table I), operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (including maintenance), involving 280 permanent employees, with up to 120 contract employees on site at any given time."

This study predicts the level of smoke that miners might meet while trying to escape a coal mine fire and describes how smoke would impede their safe escape. For this study, the authors assumed that miners exit through an escapeway adjacent to the burning entry, that some air would leak from the burning entry to the escapeway. The following conclusions were made: • A very low amount of air leakage to the escapeway can produce a critical level of visual obscurity from smoke. This shows that intake airways may be as susceptible to smoke visibility problems as return airways. • This critical level of smoke obscurity is reached much before a critical level of carbon monoxide is reached. • Small fires can cause a severe sensory irritation that further limits vision. Thus, reliable eye protection is very important. These results show that methods to guide miners through dense smoke will contribute greatly to saving lives during mine fires.

"Refiners are generally considered solely as fuel producers, but actually they also comprise a group one of the largest consumers of fuel. For example, during the year 1929 the refineries-burned 51,544,000 barrels of oil as fuel, or the equivalent of over 5 per cent of the crude oil processed in that year. In addition enough other fuels - coal, natural gas, refinery or still gas, and petroleum coke - were utilized to raise the total fuel consumption based on B. t. u. equivalent to more than 10 per cent of the heat value in the total crude oil run to stills. Refineries utilize fuel chiefly as the heat-forming element distillation, but also under-boilers in the formation of steam used in refining, for the heating of buildings, and in the generation of electricity.In the early days of refining, the problem of fuel utilization and fuel economy was of scant importance to the refiners. Margins of profit were comparatively high and the major portion of the operatros1 attention was directed toward increasing their throughput. However, the keen competition that has prevailed in the refining industry over the past five years or more has taught the refiners that their expenses, one of the largest items of which is the cost of fuel, must be curtailed. Thus in 1925 the refiners used an average of 829,000 B. t. u. to refine a barrel of crude oil, wheras by 1929 this average had been reduced to 639,000 B. t. u., a decline of 23 per cent (see fig. 1)Since 1925 oil has ranked first as a refinery fuel (see fig. 2). The use of natural gas increased during 1926 and 1927 but declined in 1928 and 1929. On the other hand, the use of refinery gas has grown rapidly in importance. Coal has shown a steady decline in use at refineries since 1925. Petroleum coke has never supplied more than a very small fraction of the total fuel requirements, although there has been a steady increase in its use."

A glance at the following chart reveals that because of the continued poor economy, the slump in industrial mineral production continued into 1980. Gypsum was down 17% from 1979; cement down 9%, sand and gravel, 17%, and crushed stone, 11%. All these downward trends reflect the high interest rates and high costs that slowed construction starts. Domestic fluorspar was down 21% and imports off 14% due to the steel iudustry slump. However, potash production was up 8% and phosphate, 5%. Increased drilling activity spurred au increase in barite production of 25%. Most other industrial minerals posted losses with only a few insignificant increases. As expected, prices were higher, reflecting increases due to high costs for labor, supplies, and above all, energy. Increasing energy and transportation costs also had their effect on industrial mineral production. Railroad freight rates increased 16-22% including fuel surcharge; truck rates increased 11-14%a; and ocean freight rates increased 20% for finished goods. The 1979 shortage of boa and hopper cars did not continue into 1980-most likely due to low production of many of the hulk industrial mineral commodities. All in all, 1980 was not a good Year for industrial minerals.

Aggressive driving patterns, rough and poorly maintained roads and pit floors, along with the occasional bump and poorly placed load from a shovel can create intense and sometimes serious vibration levels on a heavy hauler. The effects of high vibration have been shown to be of concern for the health of the operator as well as the reliability of the equipment. It is proposed that an onboard vibration warning system based on the ISO 2631-1 standard could be used to help operators reduce the vibration levels experienced in a heavy hauler. The onboard system would consist of a screen that displays the instantaneous vibration in the form of three lights: green (safe zone), yellow (cautious zone), and red (danger zone), as well as an overall vibration exposure or dose for the entire shift. With the utilization of the warning system, it is anticipated that the overall vibration levels will be decreased resulting in improved operator health, a reduction of vibration-induced maintenance, and improved haul roads through reduced impact loading and repair for localized trouble areas.

This report summarizes the results of a one-year agreement for research on the electromagnetic environment in coal mines, which was conceived as the beginning of a long term cooperative program between ITS and the Bureau of Mines. The concepts on which it was originally based are a result of the report on mine rescue and survival by the Committee on Mine Rescue and Survival Techniques of the National Academy of Engineering, dated March 1970. This report drew particular attention to the need for improved communications during and following mine disasters. In particular, the outstanding problems identified were the location of, and communication with, trapped miners. Some tentative solutions, generally involving long-wave electromagnetic signals, were offered. Consideration of the problems of disaster location and communication soon leads to consideration of the communications techniques (or lack of them) for use under normal mining conditions. In particular, if a disaster communication and/or location system is to be readily available and operable under disaster conditions, it should also be usable during mining operations. In this way operators can become familiar enough with the system to operate it during disaster conditions, as well as provide a mechanism for regular testing.

"Over the years many differing approaches have been developed to clearly understand the nature, mode of occurrence, associations and deportment of both free-milling and refractory gold in a wide variety of differing geologic environments and plant products. Many approaches can be taken to characterize the ore which may occur as complex fine grained gold, ultra-fine grained gold, coarse nuggetty gold, complex Asrich refractory gold and double-refractory gold. The approach taken in assessing small drill core composites from Novo Resources Beaton Creek Paleoplacer gold project located in the Pilbara region of Australia was complicated by the nature of the ore, the small amount of sample available from current exploration work, and the gold grade and the grain size distribution. In this case the scope of the study was limited by sample availability although significant amounts of valuable information was also gained. This gold characterization study included the following elements:??Size fraction assays??Ore microscopy??Preparation of heavy mineral concentrates from sized fractions (screening) of crushed or milled head using heavy liquids and Superpan table.??Systematic scans of the heavy mineral concentrate, middling, and tailing fractions using TIMA Automated Scanning Electron Microscopy integrated with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometry to provide semi-quantitative elemental analysis of the individual grains found in the sample.The unique methodology employed to detail the gold deportment was the combination of the Tescan Integrated Mineral Analyser (TIMA) and the Oxford INCA GSR software. This technique not only allowed us to document the deportment of gold but recognize other associated minerals, which included gersdorffite, chalcopyrite, uraninite, coffinite, brannerite and several Rare Earth-bearing minerals.INTRODUCTIONGold deportment studies are commonly carried out on preliminary gold exploration projects in order to determine the various limitations, which may effect processing of the potential ore. This is often because it may be expected that there may be a refractory component to the gold, which may limit physical separation techniques and suggest more costly hydrometallurgical techniques. Often when carrying out gold deportment studies the mineralogical methods may be limited to assuming that the gold will be fine and easily found using standard techniques of optical microscopy or Scanning Electron Microscopy. This may not always be the case as various geological environments may pose their own individual problems to determining the deportment of the gold grains."

The use of diesel engine locomotives in South African mines can be traced to Van Dyk Consolidated Mines Ltd on the Witwatersrand gold mines in 1928 as a replacement for battery locomotives. The advantages and disadvantages were recognized in those days, and surprisingly, there are no significant additions to this list, but only refinements. In the absence of any Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) for Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in SA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (USA) rule is currently being used as a benchmark for the ventilation engineering designs. This paper discusses the ongoing SA journey of measurement and limitations of exposure data for ventilation planning and regulatory purposes. The currently accepted DPM limits are based upon the belief that they are economically and technically feasible for the mines to reach and are not necessarily health based. For SA underground platinum mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.8 with a range of 1.2 to 5.8 was observed. For SA coal mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.44 with a range of 1.25 to 2.13 was observed. While it is common practice in the USA to use the ratio of TC/EC for metal mines to be 1.3, the ratio found in local platinum mines is 2.2 and for coal mines, the ratio was 1.53 which is lower than Australian studies, i.e., 1.96. It has been shown that a need for critical analysis of TC/EC ratios exists, and possible reasons for variance must be understood before stringent adoption of overseas recommended limits for DPM. It is hoped that the findings from this paper would provide input to scientific approaches in developing appropriate conversion factors, limits for DPM and also in ensuring appropriate error factors (currently 1.14 for TC and 1.2 for EC) for compliance determination.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500°-900°C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750°-900°C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

A series of experiments were undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the emission products of several types of conveyor belting and other combustible materials found in mines. These experiments were conducted under intermediate-scale, simulated mine conditions to determine smoke characteristics and gas concentrations. From these determinations, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. Three types of belts were investigated: chloroprene, also known as neoprene (NP); polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The belts were designated as ignitable or self-extinguishing depending on the length of the burning time and the subsequent combustion products. Under these experimental conditions, the SBR belts were the easiest to ignite. The PVC and NP belts tended to self- extinguish within a few minutes after ignition, but were still capable of maintaining a brief flaming period. These conveyor belt combustion results are compared with previous analyses of wood, transformer fluid, and coal fires. Together they form a data base by which findings from future experiments with other mine combustibles can be compared.

In the last 30 years, human appropriation of global renewable resources has accelerated to the point where 35 per cent of the earthÆs land surface is now in managed agro-ecosystems, consumptive water use consumes between 50 per cent and 85 per cent of freshwater supply and 60 per cent of ecosystem services are utilised in an unsustainable manner. There are virtually no landscapes in which renewable resources are not already fully allocated among different economic and environmental uses. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that water availability issues do not exist in isolation but are linked with the related environmental issues of biodiversity preservation, the carbon cycle, soil degradation, and energy use and supply. It is against this background that the sustainable management of water in mining is increasingly developing a strategic viewpoint where water is viewed as a resource within an interconnected landscape, having economic, environmental and social value and providing a range of environmental services in the provision of public and private goods. This paper explores the issues associated with sustainable management of water in mining from a strategic viewpoint. The cumulative impacts of multiple water users, both within and outside the mining sector, is increasingly threatening the security of supply for all users. To quantitatively assess the ætrueÆ value of water it is necessary to: Better understand the science of ecosystem functioning and how human actions impact on environmental processes. Develop appropriate policy, finance and governance structures to support innovative programs that preserve ecosystem function and services (including market based instruments). Apply knowledge as interventions across landscapes in ways that maximise benefits and minimise unintended consequences taking into account differences in the value of water among sectors. A strategic viewpoint of water management relies on knowledge to guide decision making that has been acquired at a range of scales from mine site to mining region. This knowledge must be based on rigorous science, sound data and syntheses of different types of information. Strategic management of water resources will better position the industry in terms of understanding the risks posed by complex, interlinked environmental issues that are increasingly impacting on future access to land and renewable resources, including water, thereby ensuring miningÆs future social licence to operate.

This report describes the loading and transportation practices employed at the zinc-lead mines of The Eagle-Picher Co., Jo Daviess County, Ill., and Lafayette County, Wis. The report also gives a brief history of the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc-lead district and the operations of the company in the area. The diesel-powered, rubber-tired loading and haulage equipment is described and illustrated from the operational point of view only, and an analysis is made of the materials-handling system without going into health and safety factors. The costs per ton of the various components of mechanical loading, underground haulage, underground crushing, and hoisting for fiscal year 1960 are tabulated.

"Enterprises are faced with increasing economic competition and managers are obliged to look for methods that will ensure a competitive edge in their companies’ markets. These methods include managerial concepts that employ common sense and are low cost. One of these approaches is the KAIZEN methodology, of Japanese origin; kaizen means continuous improvement (CI) when translated. A mining company, despite some of its idiosyncrasies, is just an enterprise where the application of KAIZEN can be advantageous. The company investigated, OKD, is the only domestic producer of hard coal in the Czech Republic and operates four mines that produce 11 Mt of coal annually. The OKD management team opted for KAIZEN as their principal method of continuous quality improvement. This paper suggests ideas for development and application of processes that provide for continuing improvement of production and management. To provide technology that can help decrease the dependence of the U.S. aluminum industry on imported bauxite, the main ore of aluminum, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the extraction of aluminum from abundant domestic reserves of kaolinitic clay. Miniplant studies of the continuous leaching of calcined kaolin with boiling 25-pct HC1 acid resulted in a 93- to 99-pct extraction of the acid-soluble alumina in the calcined kaolin feed. Data are presented for an acid leaching study carried out in three or four continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR) in series, feed rates of 100 to 250 lb/hr of calcined kaolin, and total nominal residence times of 0.7 to 2.3 hr. A material balance for a 176-lb/hr calcined kaolin feed rate in a circuit consisting of three reactors, four classifiers, and five thickeners is given. Data provide detailed compositional and physical information for calcined kaolin, process liquors, and acid-leached residue solids.

"INTRODUCTIONMagnetic mill linings have been developed from an invention by Mr. Bertil Brandt, the originator of the Skega rubber lining. The OREBED magnetic mill lining is a concept in which rubber covered strontium ferrite permanent magnets are arranged on the inside wall of a mill shell so that they attract magnetically susceptible material be it ore, media or tramp, to form a protective layer over the magnets and to serve as an operating surface with indefinite life.Noranda Mines Ltd. through its associate Norcast Division of Noranda Metal Industries formed a joint venture with the inventors to market magnetic mill linings in North America. For the past twelve months trials have been undertaken in conjunction with Orebed Inc. to test and develop these linings for grinding mill applications at the Horne Concentrator. Two independent milling circuits are currently being operated, one treating a siliceous gold ore and the other a copper slag.This paper presents the results of the magnetic lining test programme to date."

This report describes the initial phase of Bureau of Mines research in the hydraulic mining of bituminous coal. The mining site and equipment are described, and the test procedures and results obtained with a bar-mounted monitor are given. Tests showed that hard Pittsburgh-bed coal can be mined hydraulically from a solid face at water pressures of 4,000 pounds per square inch.4 Coal was penetrated to a depth of 4 feet in 20 seconds with 225 gallons of water per minute coming from a 3/8-inch nozzle at 4,000 pounds per square inch pressure. Some difficulty was encountered in cutting the binders occurring in the coal; it was not possible Lu penetrate directly the overlying draw slate.
