This resume of the work of the Petroleum and Natural - Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines for the fiscal years 1940 and 1941 is the second of a series. of progress reports . It brings forward from the 1939 annual report information on the course of activities of the division in carrying out its objectives of increased conservation and better utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and related resources through a coordinated program of research and fact - finding . It discusses, also, special assignments. executed for other Government agencies, which in recent years have constituted a considerable part of the division's work ." . In the present national emergency, in which petroleum is so essential , many of the Bureau's research activities bear directly on the availability, conservation, and use of petroleum for national defense . Accordingly, during the past year attention has been focused for the most part.on.problems associated with the needs of national defense . Several long-time researches , which in themselves are potential sources of desirable knowledge , were judged to be of secondary importance under present conditions and accordingly were suspended . Studies also were oriented in line with rapidly changing conditions to meet the demand for accurate findings on short notice . The Petroleum and Natural - Gas Division has experiment stations at Bartlesville , Okla . , and Laramie, Wyo . , a field office at Dallas , Tex . , and a field office and laboratory at San Francisco , Calif . It also operates the Government helium plant near Amarillo , Tex. In addition to the helium operations , some of the petroleum and natural - gas research activities are conducted at the Amarillo plant .

The Ameristar Casino expansion project included the design and construction of a 25-story hotel and 9-story parking structure expansion. The site is located in a floodplain on the banks of the Missouri River in Saint Charles, Missouri, where the underlying soils are potentially liquefiable. The geotechnical engineer performed subsurface exploration and analysis, which included site-specific seismic response and liquefaction, and provided geotechnical design recommendations. In the event of an earthquake, post-liquefaction settlement was calculated to be approximately 14 inches. Additional project constraints included wetlands protection, construction adjacent to the existing facility, flood protection and river bank stability. Because of the liquefaction issue, the geotechnical engineer consulted with a specialty geotechnical contractor on ground improvement methods. This consultation led to a proposal to eliminate deep foundations from the design and support the structures on shallow and mat foundations. The geotechnical engineer assisted the design team with foundation design analysis and value engineering assessments. Together with the project team, the geotechnical engineer used the data to evaluate foundation options and construction methods to overcome the site challenges and concluded that ground improvement was the optimum course of action. Because of the nature of the site constraints, a number of ground improvement methods were needed. The geotechnical engineer evaluated the methods proposed by the geotechnical contractor and provided the technical specifications for the ground improvement bid package, which included vibro-compaction, compaction grouting and micropiles. The ground improvement allowed for the use of shallow foundations (mat and spread footings), which provided the client with significant time and cost savings over the deep foundation alternatives.

Wooden wedges, hammers and chisels, “fne setting”, to name a few, were the frst tools used to extract ore .or quarry rock for civilization. These inefficient tools and unsafe practices have been replaced today with some of the highest technology known to man. At the heart of most mining operations is the blasting program which utilizes one of the most efficient tools ever invented.. . explosives. Ever since they were invented, miners have been searching for more efficient products and methods with which to harness this “tool” and make it safer, reliable, and more eficient to use.

"The SART Process was introduced to the gold mining industry in the late 1990s and several commercial plants were built over the following 10 to 15 years. Most of these plants have operated well and enjoyed plant performance in line with expectations based on the underlying chemistry of the process. However, two of the plants have consistently suffered from high reagent consumption and poor product quality, which has motivated a re-examination of the process fundamentals in the hope of understanding the reasons for poor performance when it occurs, and developing mitigating strategies.This testwork along with a review of the relevant literature has demonstrated that the amount of sulphide added to the primary reactor, relative to the copper concentration, is the most critical parameter dictating plant performance, with pH and residence time important secondary factors. The primary product in the SART Process is synthetic chalcocite, Cu2S, and the stoichiometric requirement for sulphide addition is therefore 0.5 moles per mole of copper in solution. Testwork shows that when sulphide is added in excess of this amount (generally with the express purpose of lowering residual copper in solution) it not only fails in its intended purpose, but can have a negative impact on the settling and filtration characteristics of the copper sulphide product, as well as the final product quality. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated the higher the selected operating pH in the pH 3 to 5 range, and the longer the residence time of slurry in this pH range.Freshly precipitated copper sulphide compounds are known to be very fine and slimy, with poor settling and filtration characteristics. It is therefore important to engineer the SART Process in such a way as to encourage growth in the average particle size of the precipitate crystals. This was the rationale for recycling a portion of the thickener underflow to the primary reactor when the SART Process was developed. The theory of crystallization predicts that compounds of extremely low solubility, such as chalcocite (Cu2S: KSP = 10-48), are likely to experience growth in crystal particle size through aggregation rather than heterogeneous nucleation. On this basis, the SART practice of recycling a portion of thickener underflow to the primary reactor in the commercial plants is unlikely to lead to crystal growth via nucleation, and could in fact promote breakage of the aggregates that formed in the thickener. Recycling thickener underflow could therefore have the opposite of the desired outcome. The result of testwork that is reported here lends credence to this theory and questions the wisdom of recycling in the SART process.There is evidence to suggest that operating the copper sulphide thickener in the SART Process without flocculants may be beneficial. Thickener underflow densities could improve from the current 10 - 15% range to 40 - 50%. This will not only reduce the flowrate of slurry to the filter, but the filtration properties of the slurry (filtration rate, filter cake moisture content) will also improve. This is one of the most critical engineering and design aspects of the SART Process, and the achievement of high solids density in the thickener underflow will not only improve the health and safety aspects of the operation, but also has the potential to lower capital costs and improve the quality of the final product."

This paper presents the results of lateral load tests on 0.61-m to 1.27-m (24 to 50-inch) diameter drilled and cast-in-place piers in San Diego area residual/formational soils. The test piers were installed and tested in the following soils: Decomposed Granitic Rock (Ktd), Stadium Conglomerate (Tst), and Friars Formation (Tf). Lateral loads of up to 845 KN (190 kip) were applied to the piers in residual granitic soils, and loads up to 1780 KN (400 kip) were applied to the piers in Stadium Conglomerate and Friars Formation. The tests were conducted by jacking against adjacent piers and monitoring the lateral load and lateral deflection at the ground line. Test results indicate that ultimate lateral pile capacities of up to 1800 KN (400 kip) can be obtained for 0.61 m (24-inch) drilled piers with penetration of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in the residual/formational soils tested. Lateral load analyses using p-y curves for very dense sand significantly overestimate the observed lateral deflections. For lateral load analyses using dense sand p-y curves, p-multipliers that increase the lateral soil stiffness (p-y curves) by 2 to 8 times are required to match the load-deflection behavior measured in the test piles. When applied to the dense sand p-y curves, the p-multipliers provide a more accurate prediction of load-deflection behavior in the residual/formational soils, and can result in shorter required pier penetration and significant savings in foundation cost.

The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017. The University of Maryland (UMD) has conducted a series of small-scale tests using explosive charges buried in saturated sand. Twelve different combinations of depth of burial of the charge and height of the target plate above the soil were tested. The target plates did not deform plastically. High-speed video was used to track the motion of the plate. The video data are analyzed to determine the position and velocity of the plate as a function of time. The results of this analysis are compared with computations performed at NRL using the BUB2D computer code. This code treats the saturated sand as an incompressible visco-plastic fluid which yields according to a Drucker-Prager (frictional-cohesive) yield surface. Comparisons of simulations with experiments are presented. In the cases examined so far, the velocity grows very quickly to a peak and then slows, first with a deceleration greater than one “g,” which then transitions to an approximately one “g” deceleration. An analysis of air drag on the plates has shown that its effect is negligible in the time span of interest. In all cases in which the BUB2D code can be applied, the computations compare favorably with the results of the data analysis. This suggests that the code and model used in the computation are properly capturing the physics of the interaction between the soil and a non-deforming plate.

Despite limited discussion, Chemistry of Flotation is a good text and reference 1985 by M. C. Fuerstenau, J. D. Miller, and M. C. Kuhn Society of Mining Engineers Caller No. D Littleton, CO 80127 Softcover, $23.50 (member), $18.50 (student member), $28.50 (list) Review by Richard R. Klimpel Chemistry in Flotation, as stated by the authors, is intended as a textbook for students as well as a reference book for practicing flotation engineers. It covers subject matter related to surface phenomena; collectors and collector salts; natural floatability; the flotation of sulfide minerals, insoluble oxide and silicate minerals, semisoluble salts, and soluble salts; and slime coatings. There are no discussions in the book on practical plant implications of flotation chemistry, such as the influence of rate, particle size effects, dosage, flotation equipment, and methods of chemical addition. The book itself is small (only 177 pages), and, as published, is in an easy-to-handle soft cover. Once one accepts the intent of the authors, this book really does represent a very concise and convenient summary of the chemistry of flotation. It is, however, far from complete in its discussion of concepts and implications of data. Very often in the presentation, key prior knowledge (or at least subject matter awareness) not given in the book, is assumed. Thus, depending on one's familiarity with the specific subject matter, some sections can be easily followed while others could be tough going. Some of the discussion is so brief and terse on important subjects that unless the reader already realizes the meaning of the presentation, the conclusions to be drawn are not always clear. Therefore, if one is not expecting a self-contained primer on flotation chemistry, this book is very useful. To this end, the book is recommended to practitioners of flotation chemistry. The presentation of data in figures and tables is good. It helps considerably in the book achieving its conciseness. The authors certainly are qualified and knowledgeable in the subject matter - apparent in the style of presentation. In summary, this reviewer thoroughly enjoyed this book and will use it as a concise review of flotation chemistry. Richard R. An earlier Bureau of Mines report4 provided low-temperature heat-capacity and entropy data for three sodium vanadates. This report continues the study of vanadates by presenting analogous data for three crystalline calcium vanadates - calcium metavanadate (CaV206), calcium pyrovanadate (Ca2V2O7), and calcium orthovanadate (Ca3V208). No similar data for these compounds have been published previously. MATERIALS All three vanadate samples were prepared by the Bureau of Mines by heating stoichiometric mixtures of reagent-grade calcium carbonate and vanadium pentoxide.5 Calcium metavanadate was prepared at 610° to 660° C. A stoichiometric mixture was heated for 17 days with intervening grindings, mixings, and adjustments of composition, as shown necessary by chemical analysis. The final analysis gave calcium oxide, 23.48 pct. (theoretical, 23.57 pct.) and vanadium pentoxide, 76.32 pct. (theoretical, 76.43 pct.). The sample also contained 0.11 pct. acid-insoluble matter. The X-ray diffracton pattern showed no lines of free calcium or vanadium oxides. No X-ray diffraction patterns were found in the literature for any of these substances.

The immediate floor bed in the Illinois Basin coal mines is often comprised of weak plastic underclay material. Operational and stability problems were encountered in the past due to the low strength characteristics of the underclay floor. Among several indicators of the nature of the floor, Atterberg limits are the most important ones that describe the plasticity behavior of these clayey materials. While several useful and interesting studies were conducted in the past on the Illinois Basin weak floor material, within the knowledge of the authors, a comprehensive database describing the plasticity characteristics of the floor material has never been published. In this paper, a large database comprising over 700 sets of Atterberg limits was put together from 39 inactive and active mines from all the three states covering the Basin. Analysis of this data shows several interesting trends related to the engineering behavior of the floor material. The paper also describes the practical implications of the trends shown by the Atterberg limits.

The emphasis of this paper is on the characterization and testing of the slag produced by a secondary lead refinery. This work forms part of a broader investigation aimed at reducing loss of valuable product from the process as well as minimizing the environmental impact of the process wastes. It was this work that led to a critical examination of the standard waste classification tests. Characterization of the slag was carried out using a number of complementary techniques. In the broader context, the slag characterization aided in identifying process deficiencies and thus was a critical tool in suggesting potential for process optimization. For this study, the slag characterization provided a relatively comprehensive picture of the composition and properties of the slag, which facilitated understanding the behaviour of the slag under batch test conditions. On the basis of quantity of hazardous components alone, the slag is hazardous according to South African Acceptable Risk Limits (ARL). However, when both the quantity and the leach potential of the hazardous components is taken into account, standard waste tests carried out by three independent agencies indicate that the slag should not be classified as hazardous according to local regulations. Also, according to United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) limits, which are independent of the quantity of the waste, the slag would not be classified as hazardous. The standard waste tests used by the independent agencies was the Toxicity Characteristic Leach Procedure (TCLP), a test which was developed by the US EPA to classify hazardous wastes. One of the requirements of this batch test is that it should be quick, simple to carry out and that the results should be reproducible. Previously, the applicability of the TCLP test to mineral processing and metallurgical wastes has been challenged on a number of points. Additional testing of the slag was carried out using both the TCLP and the Synthetic Precipitation Leach Procedure (SPLP) recommended by the American National Mining Association as being more appropriate for mineral processing wastes. The particular physical and chemical characteristics of the secondary lead slag highlighted additional limitations of both the TCLP and SPLP tests as standard laboratory batch procedures. Flotation operations in Sudbury, Ontario, seeking to separate pentlandite and chalcopyrite from mixed sulphide deposits, produce pyrrhotite tailings that have been disposed of in tailings ponds for over 50 years. These reactive tailings are viewed as waste, despite containing ~0.8 wt% Ni, and represent an environmental liability because of their acid mine drainage (AMD) potential. Given the large quantities of pyrrhotite currently stored in Sudbury, and declining ore grades elsewhere, these tailings have shifted from being viewed as a waste to a potential resource. Recent advances in the bioleaching of low-grade sulphide ores have raised the prospect of bioleaching as a potential low-cost processing option. However optimization of this proposed process requires a thorough understanding of the mineralogy of the pyrrhotite tailings that would be leached. The work presented here addresses the characterization of two distinct Sudbury pyrrhotite tailings, namely from the Vale and Glencore operations, using electron microprobe, XRD and QEMSCAN analysis. Particular focus is given to how the mineralogy may affect bioleaching as a processing option, through the deportment of nickel and the various phases present

The paper outlines the development of a solvent extraction process for the recovery of scandium, yttrium, thorium, and heavy lanthanides from waste sulphate liquor at the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant. A summary is given of known solvents for these elements, including the recently developed alkyl-phosphoric acid esters which are applicable to sulphate solutions.A kerosene solution of di- (2'-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) has been suggested by some workers as a suitable solvent for fractionation of the lanthanides. Experimental work with this solvent showed that it could be used for initial recovery of the above elements from low concentrations in the complex sulphate liquor. In particular, scandium could be recovered as a high grade product by extraction with 0·lM EHPA, followed by a purification strip with 9N sulphuric acid, and final stripping of scandium with sodium hydroxide solution.To enable alkaline stripping to be used successfully, the kerosene solution of the reagent was modified by the addition of a small proportion of nonanol. Experimental work included laboratory scale batch tests and small pilot scale continuous tests.A proposed extension of the process for the separate recovery of individual heavy lanthanides, yttrium, and thorium is described.INTRODUCTIONAt the Port Pirie uranium treatment plant of the South Australian Government, large volumes of "barren liquor", free from 'uranium, are at present run to waste. This "barren liquor" results from sulphuric acid leaching of Radium,Hill uranium concentrate, followed by separation of solid residues and removal of uranium from the clear solution by ion exchange. CATOH Inc. of Weedsport, New York recently completed a very challenging Bored-In Pile project which features unique construction techniques in the installation and load testing of 45 and 100 ton capacity piles. The bored-in piles were installed on a twenty-nine million dollar New York State Department of Transportation project which began in the fall of 1995 and ended in March of 1997. The project included the construction of 5 new bridges to alleviate a very congested traffic network which had come to be known as the "Octopus" in the small city of Ithaca, New York. CATOH Inc. was awarded the piling contract by general contractor Santaro Industries in the fall of 1995. Piling installation work was completed in March of 1997. BACKGROUND The project is located at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake which lies in the heart of Upstate New York's Finger Lakes Region. This region is popular not only for wine making and vacationing, but also for its impressive geological history. The glacial activities that helped to form the deep valleys of this scenic area are also responsible for creating challenging underground conditions for deep foundations work. CATOH developed two pile designs to accommodate differing site conditions on the project. Internally reinforced piles were developed for use in the center of the valley and externally reinforced piles were developed for locations close to the valley wall.

El presente trabajo señala el proyecto de remediación de los relaves mineros realizado en la relavera Ticapampa, ubicado en el Distrito de Ticapampa – Huaráz, región Ancash, con el objetivo de remediar los relaves de TICAPAMPA depositados por más de 30 años y que contaminan al río Santa, fuente principal de irrigación del Valle del Callejón de Huaylas. El proyecto comprende la extracción de contaminantes del pasivo ambiental de Ticapampa a través de la flotación de los sulfuros de fierro, y la obtención de un material inerte (con bajo contenido de sulfuros contaminantes) para la fabricación de productos cerámicos por medio de resinas recientemente desarrolladas.

Laboratory-scale tests were conducted at Mintek for the production of titanium powder from particulate Kroll sponge by the hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) process. The aim of this work was to produce titanium powder for powder metallurgical consolidations. The work involved the production of titanium powder at optimized conditions, which included hydrogenation in a horizontal tube furnace at 600°C for 2 hours, milling using planetary and roller mills, and dehydrogenation in a vacuumed retort fitted in a muffle furnace running at 700°C for 36 hours. The titanium powder produced in this project matched the elemental specifications of commercially available titanium powder, except for high carbon content. Nevertheless, the powder has been tested further in mechanical alloying and has been found suitable for the production of powder metallurgical compacts. "The few previous observations of the effect of turbulence on limits of inflammability have been made on a small scale in turbulence produced either by a fan or by movement of the mixture.By a suitable amount of turbulence from a fan the lower limit of methane was 5 per cent as compared with 5 per cent observed for quiescent mixtures in the same vessel.3 With a streaming movement of the gas mixture within the range of speed from 35 to 65 centimeters per second (69 to 128 feet a minute) the lower limit was approximately 5 percent,4 For a quiescent mixture of ethane the lower limit was 3.10 per cent ethane, but with fan running at a moderate speed a 3 per cent mixture exploded.5The object of the tests herein reported was (1) to determine the lower limit of natural gas in a mixture of natural gas and air Which would be ignited and propagate violently when the turbulence was produced by explosives fired from a cannon into the mixture; (2) to observe the behavior when the mixture contained less than this low limit; and (3) to determine how turbulence produced by a fan affects thin limit.Four series of tests were run, three of which were to determine the effect of different sources of ignition: Tests with (1) an electric igniter; (2) 3F black blasting powder stemmed with 2 pounds of dry fire clay stemming used to ignite the mixture, and (3) 40 per cent straight nitroglycerin dynamite unstemmed. The fourth was made to study the effect of turbulence produced by a two-speed electric fan, using an electric igniter as the source of ignition.In both series of tests with explosives, charges of 50 and 200 were used to determine the effect of increased quantity of explosives on the lower limit of natural gas."

The igneous intrusions in SE Papua New Guinea are part of a sub-volcanic to plutonic, high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic suite. High-K andesitic to dacitic intrusives on Misima and Woodlark Islands, and shoshonitic intrusives in Milne Bay and the eastern Owen Stanley Ranges are related to late Cenozoic andesitic volcanism. Both suites are associated with epithermal Au-Ag deposits and weak porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. All significant alluvial and lode gold occurrences in the region are spatially related to intrusions. Intrusions in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and near Mt Suckling are core plutons related to basement doming, and appear to have no association with either volcanism or hydrothermal mineralisation. The core plutons are not petrochemi:ally distinct from the volcano-re:-ed Intrusions.

OBJECTIVES The objectives of this project were: ? to determine the principal factors contributing to high accident frequency and severity in both conventional and continuous mining operations; ? to compare and evaluate the safety aspects of the "open end" and "split and fender" systems of pillar mining; to establish basic data required to decide what constitutes an adequate pillaring plan that will optimize efficiency, recovery, and safety; ? to determine what measurements or information should be collected, (e.g. roof sag, pillar stress,) to make on-the-spot judgment of impending roof or pillar collapse; ? to make recommendations to improve existing methods or to insure proper techniques are implemented, and ? to suggest areas where additional studies or new research may be of value.
