Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. The roof bolts tested are also used to identify the possible corrosion mechanisms that influenced the bolts’ performance over time. Initially, the most commonly used bolt material in the USA, the ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, was tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal mining environment for approximately 6 months, and the results are discussed. Localized corrosion forms such as crevice and pitting were mainly observed after testing. The stressed and unstressed roof bolts with and without threads that were tested in alkaline coal mine corrosive environment for 6 months passed their load-bearing capacity as per ASTM F432 test standards. From the results, it is concluded that this test protocol could be applicable to test the material performance of different roof bolt metallurgies and coatings with desired modifications to the proposed methodology for the specific underground mine environment. This paper mainly discusses the test system and protocol and shortcomings of the system and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

The process of electrostatic separation was developed in the late 19th century, but did not make much headway for about 25 years. High dc voltages, of the order of 20 kilovolts, are involved, and the only means of obtaining such voltages at that time were by the use of frictional machines, such as the Wimshurst. These were not reliable, for two reasons:-a. If a spark discharge occurred it took an appreciable time before a steady voltage was again attained.b. In damp weather the machines were almost useless.In the first 20 years of the 20th century the advent of mechanical and vacuum-tube rectifiers led to promising developments of 'the process. In the early 1920's flotation became widely used commercially, and proved to be more reliable, and capable of wider application, than electrostatic separation. During the last 15 years or so, with a better knowledge of the fundamentals forming the basis of the process, electrostatic separation is beginning to compete with flotation, especially in the treatment of smallsizedgranular material, such as beach sands. Electrostatic separation can be, and is, widely used in many cases where flotation is impossible, such as in the cleaning of food products which must be kept dry.

Uranium of the Grants region occurs predominantly in continental sandstones of the upper part of the Jurassic Morrison Formation, but significant lesser deposits are found in limestone of the Jurassic Todilto Formation and in black shale of the Cretaceous Dakota Formation. The deposits are disseminations that form runs ranging from a few hundred tons to several million tons. The ore consists mainly of uraninite, uraniferous carbonaceous material, coffinite, and such secondary oxidized minerals at tyuyamunite, carnotite, and uranophane. In sandstone, the ore runs were locallized by mudstone, interstitial carbonaceous material, and primary sand channel trends. In limestone, ore deposition was related to folds and fracture zones. The great bulk of production has come from the Ambrosia Lake mines in the Grants district and the Jackpile and Paguate mines in the Laguna district. The ores, which generally have been 0.20 to 0.30 per cent U3O8, are treated at mills operated by Kerr-McGee Corporation, Homestake-Sapin Partners, and The Anaconda Company, all in the Grants district. In 14·years after discovery in 1950, the deposits had yielded concentrates valued in excess of $800,000,000. Since deposition of the Jurassic host rocks, a geologic history involving tilting, faulting, erosion, changing ground-water environments, and oxidation has considerably influenced the existence and character of the deposits. It is evident that their ongm is not simple. However, a degree of agreement appears probable for a pre-Dakota age for the original ore runs, and, at Ambrosia Lake, two principal stages of ore formation, separated by Laramide faulting, are recognized. All earlier ores have been modified by Quaternary oxidation, solution, and enrichment during which time much secondary tyuyamunite, metatyuyamunite, carnotite were formed.

FLSmidth-Summit Valley Technologies has been a leader in gold processing equipment for nearly two decades. Over the past several years an extensive research and development effort has led to improvements in Mercury Abatement systems and process efficiency in Adsorption Desorption and Regeneration (ADR) or "Carbon" plant operations. Two technologies will be discussed that are focused on efficiency improvements followed by an explanation of Mercury Abatement systems. Gold and silver can be desorbed from carbon in several ways. FLSmidth has made significant improvements to the Pressure ZADRA process allowing for lower energy consumption and lower capital costs. This patented process is known as the Split-ZADRA Strip method. Split-ZADRA allows a plant to elute loaded carbon in a semi-continuous fashion. This increases the grade of the Pregnant Strip Solution, improves electrowinning efficiency, reduces capital equipment costs, and reduces energy requirements. During desorption and electrowinning for the Pressure ZADRA process, the pressure and temperature of the circulating strip solution is changed multiple times. A self-contained heating and cooling system has been developed which decreases the energy requirements for elution. Mercury Abatement technology has become increasingly important in recent years. Along with FLSmidth Summit Valley Technologies' complete Mercury Retorting Systems, FLS-SVT has developed systems for the capture and removal of mercury from electrowinning cell and strip solution exhaust, Carbon Regeneration exhaust, and the dore furnace exhaust. This paper describes each of the technologies introduced above and their success in operational gold and silver mines. "For new mining projects or for medium- to long-term areas of existing mines, drilling data is invariably on a relatively large grid. Direct estimates for selective mining units (SMUs), and also for much larger block units, will then be smoothed due to the information effects and the high error variance.The difficulty is that ultimately, during mining, selection will be done on the basis of SMUs on the final close-spaced data grid (grade control), which will then be available, i.e. the actual selection will be more efficient, with fewer misclassifications. However, this ultimate mining position is unknown at the project feasibility stage and therefore has to be estimated. This estimation is required because any cash flow calculations made on the basis of the smoothed estimates will obviously misrepresent the overall economic value of the project, i.e. the average grade of blocks above cut-off will be underestimated and the tonnage overestimated for cut-off grades below the average grade of the orebody. Similarly, unsmoothed estimates will be conditionally biased and will give even worse results, particularly in local areas of short- and medium-term planning or mining.This paper presents a case study of indirect post-processing and proportional modelling of recoverable resources designed for mediumand long-term mine planning at the Gold Fields’ Tarkwa Mine in Ghana. The case study compares long-term indirect recoverable mineral resource estimates based on typical widely spaced feasibility data to the corresponding production grade control model as well as the mine production. The paper also proposes certain critical regression slope and kriging efficiency control limits to avoid inefficient medium- to longterm recoverable estimates, and highlights the danger of accepting block estimates that have a slope of regression less than 0.5."

Fur a secure mineral supply position to be maintained in the Fiuropean Community there must be a supply of qualified people in the minerals industries. The education of the people required to run and develop these industries should be a priority in the community. This means that there should be a strong capability in mining engineering education. The mining engineering professors decided in 1990 to get together in a new Society to discuss the problems. The Society of Mining Professors/Societat der Berg-baukunde was formed at a meeting in Austria in October 1990. It is basically a F.uropean Society with a few member professors from outside Europe to keep the Society conversant with trends elsewhere. The objectives of the Society are to see that the mining universities in Fiurope maintain standards and produce enough mining engineers. The present membership of the Society and the work of developing a database of current courses is described. Working from the knowledge base developed, it will be possible to design a 'European' mining degree course. The problems which will have to be addressed have been identified and are described in detail.The paper finally goes on to discuss the other problems that universities are facing, the economic problems and above all the lack of students applying for mining courses across Europe. The help and active participation of the mining industry, if that industry still wishes to employ mining engineers, is identified as the only possible solution to those problems.

Measurements from an old survey are being machine processed as a pilot project in the development of a computer-assisted method of structural mapping in shield areas. The key element in the system is a field data sheet which requires the geologist to determine a textural hierarchy in each exposure. The pilot system is limited to orientation analysis and utilizes a prior textural analysis, but this would not usually be a problem in utilizing the system ab initio for exploration. A data processing system of this general type offers promise of considerably increased productivity of field geologists by reducing compilation time and improved technical supervision through centralization of processing, and would make structural analysis an economically viable tool in mining exploration and development.

Lack of understanding of useful applications of explosives on construction work stem primarily from the fact that explosion is commonly associated with destruction. On rock excavation and other construction works a certain quantity of explosive is harnessed to perform useful work at the source e.g. blasts to disintegrate rock. Development in rock blasting techniques, including the use of multiple-row blasting with short delay ignition, have made it impossible to excavate rocks close to or below buildings even in closely built-up areas. To permit the use of explosives on construction projects, in ways that will not damage existing structures, guidelines have been developed from careful measurements of intensity of ground vibrations. Accurate electronic instruments are now available for doing this. PLANNING AND CONTROL Blasting operations must be carefully planned and carried out to avoid discomfort to persons or damage to property. This increase in the use of rock blasting in city areas alone has led to a number of problems due to ground vibrations, air shock waves, and the psychological effect of noise. While the latter seldom if ever causes damage, it does create irritation and discomfort to persons living or working near the blasting sites. A result of this is a steady increase in the number of complaints in respect of damage to houses and other premises. Many such complaints are genuine and damage may undoubtedly be caused when incorrect blasting techniques are used.

An Innovative Process for Comprehensive Utilisation of Clay-Vanadium Ores By adopting conventional processing technologies such as flotation, gravity concentration, and magnetic separation, it is difficult to enrich vanadium mineral effectively. At present, vanadium extraction process usually has not the mineral processing enrichment procedure, but rather uses direct hydrometallurgical process: roasting - leaching - precipitating vanadium for obtaining high quality V2O5 product. But it results in problems, for instance, high consume of auxiliary materials like acid and alkali, serious pollution and high cost of vanadium extraction. In the project study on the ore of a certain clay vanadium mineral, by adopting the test process: scrubbing raw ore with reagents added in - dispersing and segregating with reagents - grading enrichment, vanadium concentrate product with higher grade was made by virtue of reagent's selective inhibiting, and the purpose of upgrading the raw material used for vanadium extraction with hydrometallurgical process is achieved. The process technology obtained from project study features simple process structure, low equipment investment, low cost of mineral processing and pollution-free to environment. It provides high efficient and practical technology for the comprehensive utilisation of clay vanadium mineral, and has a prominent prospect for its popularisation and application.

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is a 6.92 kilometer (4.3 mile) long major toll bridge span that crosses the northern San Francisco Bay in a highly seismically active region. Tutor-Saliba / Koch / Tidewater JV was contracted by Caltrans to conduct a comprehensive seismic retrofit. The JV provided geotechnical planning and quality control services as described herein, under normal oversight by Caltrans. Part of the robust foundation retrofit design included the installation of 26 new, large diameter piles, including eleven 3.81 m (12.5 ft) diameter, cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) marine piles that were drilled 9.15 m (30 ft) into the bedrock beneath the Bay, where the water depth ranged up to about 21.3 m (70 ft). These reinforced concrete-filled composite piles have a steel shell permanent casing from the bridge substructure pile cap through the water column and 30.5 to 39.6 meters (100 ft to 130 ft) of marine sediments to the top of rock. This paper discusses construction, inspection (ranging from the QA employed in the planning of the CIDH pile installation methods and equipment to the actual construction inspection required for the routine installation of the shafts), problems that were encountered during construction, and the solutions that were developed and implemented. Inspection, particularly with the usual difficulties in the marine environment, coupled with the difficult and complex bedrock conditions was particularly challenging, and ranged from non-destructive testing to "in-water, inshell" diver inspection. Similarly, the complexities of dealing with both the steel casing "riser" and the associated drilled shaft (rock socket) portion of these composite foundation elements created some unusual issues. The paper also presents important lessons learned from the project.

"GENERAL STATEMENTThe purpose of this report, which is the first of a series of three covering mines in the Fairmont district of West Virginia, is to give the result of a' study conducted in seal mines to ascertain the nature of the safeguards employed to prevent injury to the workmen from falls of roof and coal. In presenting the subject matter, consideration must necessarily be given to factors, features, and conditions such as method of mining, timber regulations and practices, supervision and natural conditions; and, for comparative purposes, a certain amount of statistical matter bearing upon the relation of fatalities and injuries to their causes, tonnage produced, men employed, days worked, and time lost.Those features and practices found to promote safe protection are summarized and suggestions made for such additional safeguards and practices as appear to give greater protection against injury from falls of roof or coal.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThis study of falls of roof and coal in mines in Harrison County has been conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with R. M. Lambie, chief of the Mining Department of the State of West Virginia who assigned L. W. The steepness of the slopes of an open pit mine has a substantial influence on the financial return of the mine. The paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross-section within each rock layer; i.e., the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is employed to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties, and factor of safety (FoS). Bench geometries (bench height, face inclination, minimum berm width) are imposed in the optimization as constraints which bind the maximum local inclination of the sought optimal profile together with any other constraints such as geological discontinuities that may influence slope failure. The obtained optimal profiles are always steeper than their planar counterparts (i.e., the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS) up to 8° depending on rock type and severity of constraints on local inclinations. The design of a copper mine is first carried out employing planar pitwalls, secondly adopting the optimal pitwall profiles determined by OptimalSlope. The adoption of optimal slope profiles leads to a 34% higher net present value and reductions of carbon footprint and energy consumption of 0.17 Mt CO2 eq and 82.5 million MJ respectively due to a 15% reduction of rockwaste volume.

"Newmont’s Phoenix mine began gold production in 2006 and has since experienced difficulties in reaching design throughput due to variability in ore hardness. In 2010, a debottlenecking study was conducted, generating multiple options to increase throughput of the existing Phoenix Mill through a series of phased expansions. An option was selected in early 2011 to increase the current concentrator capacity by approximately 25% through two phases. The first phase of the project was the installation of a secondary crushing and screening circuit in order to reduce SAG feed size from a P80 of 6 inches to 2 inches. The second phase focuses on downstream unit operations in the concentrator aiming to relieve existing bottlenecks such as flotation. This paper analyzes the design, commissioning, and operation of a recently installed SAG Pre-crush circuit (Phase 1). The design discussion will focus on concept development, flowsheet design, design criteria, process models, design limitations, and control philosophy. Discussion on the integration of operating data and flowsheet into design during engineering will be presented. Actual operating data of major equipment is gathered from the commissioning and operation of the circuit and compared to the initial design models. Conclusions will be drawn on equipment design factors used during engineering, and the success of model integration into operation. The paper concludes on the successes of the project and where improvements can be made during design.INTRODUCTIONThe Phoenix mine is located within 25 miles of the town of Battle Mountain, Nevada. The mill processes copper, silver, and gold ore. Production started in 2006 and has since struggled to reach the designed tonnage of 33,600 stpd due to the variability in ore hardness. In production year 2010-2011, the Phoenix mill average daily throughput of 33,000 stpd. In 2008, a larger primary crusher (FLS 60/89 gyratory crusher) was installed to operate in parallel with the originally supplied primary crusher (Metso 50/65 gyratory crusher), in order to provide additional capacity upfront in the circuit so that the primary crushing circuit could keep up with the mill.In 2010, a mill debottlenecking study was completed to assess the various options that could be implemented to increase the current mill capacity. The study was completed in late 2010 and contained four tonnages that Phoenix could achieve through various expansion scenarios. A single option was selected in early 2011 to increase the mill capacity from 33,000 stpd to 48,000 stpd. Over the past 5 years the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, McGill University, has been involved in the performance monitoring of both percussive and rotary drills. Studies conducted in open pit coal and iron ore mines using microprocessor-based research and commercially available instrumentation resulted in the monitoring of at least 6 performance parameters while drilling vertical production blastholes.

Plant based on the New Jersey refluxing process was installed at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corporation Pty. Ltd. to refine portion of the zinc output from the Imperial Smelting furnace.Refining of impure zinc is effected by distillation in two stages in vertical columns comprising a series of superimposed silicon carbide trays designed such that ascending zinc vapours and descending liquid metal are in intimate contact. In the first stage, portion of the zinc and its cadmium content are distilled from impure feed metal, condensed, and while still molten, fed to the second column in which zinc is boiled under controlled refluxing conditions to remove the cadmium content.The resultant zinc has a purity in excess of 99·995 per cent zinc.The availability of refined zinc has made possible the production of a number of zinc alloys for marketing in addition to the basic grades of zinc.

China’s burgeoning economy is responsible for a major share of recent world mineral consumption increases. In addition to factors traditionally recognized in market economies1 and factors unique to specific commodities, Chinese consumption now plays a major and increasingly important role in energy and mineral markets for many commodities, such as aluminum, copper, iron and steel, and oil. China has the world’s second largest economy after the United States. And its long-term importance to the minerals markets is even greater than indicated by its gross domestic product (GDP), which is currently less than two-thirds of that of the United States (Table 1). This is because China’s rising standard of living is accompanied by rapid industrialization and urbanization. Its consumption of mineral materials for infrastructure development for its very large population is significantly greater per capita than that of such developed economies as the United States, the European Union and Japan. In other words, China’s per capita production is rising at a rapid rate and will probably continue to do so for many years.

The problems associated with abandoned minelands are so extensive that neither federal, state, or local governments nor the mining industry nor watershed groups can adequately address these problems individually. By combining talents and resources, however, these problems are being solved efficiently, effectively, and economically. Utilizing existing water monitoring data, local public-private partnerships have successfully designed and built passive systems within five weeks to six months which treat discharges up to hundreds of gallons per minute that vary in quality from net alkaline to highly acidic, containing as much as 200 mg/L dissolved iron and 70 mg/L dissolved aluminum.
