The commission may be permitted to express its earnest hope that the litigation which comes to an end with the findings and recom- mendations herein set forth will be considered by both parties to the action as definitely and equitably decided. The commission trusts that its work will show the value of the commission form of settlement and that its work will serve as a prece- dent to be followed in disputes relative to technical subjects. If the work of the commission is productive of a tendency on the part of technical litigants to avoid the use of the courts for the settlement of disputes it will not have been done in vain. Such tendency will surely grow and ultimately such differences will be arbitrated by technically trained men without recourse to the courts of law. Appended to the report of the findings of the commission are to be found the detailed reports covering the several lines of inquiry and investigation carried on by the commission and upon which its findings are based, and also a detailed statement of the fiscal affairs of the commission. A word of explanation is necessary in regard to the fiscal statement. While each party to the litigation has agreed to bear one-half of the expense of the investigations of the commission, it will be noted that the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. is credited with $21,000, while Solano County is credited with but $6,000. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Thomson Orogen is a large but poorly understood element of Queensland geology. Extensive cover conceals the Thomson Orogen at depth, thus limiting studies to a small number of surface exposures. Previous studies of the northern Thomson Orogen have been restricted to the largest of these exposures in the Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Less extensive exposures, including Mt McLaren in east-central Queensland, are largely overlooked and poorly documented. Fieldwork suggests that Mt McLaren is a west-tilted fault block of Thomson Orogen metasediments that are at least 2200 m thick. The substantial thickness of these sediments (which we have named the Mt McLaren Formation) and the consistent shallow marine facies throughout the block suggest deposition in an actively subsiding basin. Initial dating of detrital zircons places deposition of the Mt McLaren Formation in the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, allowing correlations with formations of similar composition and age in the nearby Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Both of these areas have a long history of mining and exploration for gold and base metals, suggesting that correlation of basement sequences across these areas could be beneficial for exploration models of the Thomson Orogen as well as for tectonic models of eastern Australia.CITATION:Lee, M, Verdel, C, Welsh, K and Oorloff, A, 2015. A volcanic sequence is described from the Golden Cross Mine, Waihi, New Zealand. The sequence includes seven lithostratigraphic units comprising flow and pyroclastic units of Coromandel Group andesite and dacite and overlying Whitianga Group dacite and rhyolite which is intruded by the Golden Cross dacite porphyry and rhyolite dykes. The sequence is mineralised and is unconformably overlain by two post-mineral units, the lacustrine Waitekauri beds and Omahine Subgroup andesite.   Detailed structural analysis of mine data has identified four deformational events (D 1-D4) and related these to the gold-silver mineralising events. Faulting was coeval with the mineralization and directly controlled the development, localisation, style and geometry of the ore shoots. Mineralization developed in competent lithologies where dilation occurred during faulting. The Empire Fault is the master shear which controlled fluid flow. Mineralised veining developed in response to tectonic pulses occurring at slightly different stages as represented by the underground Empire vein complex and the open pit vein array. The mineralising events culminated with the deposition of barren calcite veins. Post-mineral movement along the Western Boundary fault appears to have offset the orebody.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. Detailed paragenetic studies of the post-tectonic fracture-hosted vein mineralisation have demonstrated a complex paragenesis, reflecting a multi-phase combination of regional metallogenesis and tectonics through time. Previously published work regarding paragenesis and zoning was oversimplified. Two major epochs of mineralisation resulted in the emplacement of the A1 group of assemblages, from which lead, copper and silver were the main metals mined, and the A2 group, whose galena is only moderately argentiferous but which were major sources of lead and zinc. Tectonic and tentative isotopic evidence points to post-orogenic relaxation as the mechanism for development of the A1 assemblages in the early Devonian, whereas the A2 assemblages are believed to reflect Variscan extensional regimes and regional metallogenesis in the early Carboniferous and Permian

Mine seals are used extensively in underground coal mines to segregate mined-out areas and to isolate fire zones or underground areas that are susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Over the years, 30,000 mine seals have been erected in underground coal mines in the United States. Mine seals, along with rock dusting and ventilation, represent the fundamental means of preventing underground coal mine explosions. In this study the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology to determine if each of three test mine seals were uniformly constructed. Three mine seals representing different construction methods and materials (cast-in-place foamed cement; solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel; and wire mesh, rebar and gunite) were erected at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory’s underground mine as part of an on-going research program. The seals were imaged using GPR with 400-, 500-, 900-, and 1,000-MHz antennas. We found that variations in uniformity existed in the material for the cast-in-place foamed cement seal. Variations in uniformity also existed in the seal made from solid block, polyurethane foam and gravel. The post-processed radar records correlated closely with recovered core samples (areas of gravel and polyurethane foam, and areas containing only polyurethane foam). Finally, the radar records of the seal made of wire mesh, rebar and gunite showed the various components. The results of this work suggest that GPR could be used as a tool to evaluate mine seal characteristics and construction uniformity.

Separation of dolomite from phosphate is the most challenging problem in phosphate mineral processing. Over 50% of the future phosphate reserve in Florida contains too much dolomite to process using the current industry practice. The current phosphoric acid production practice requires less than 1% MgO in the phosphate concentrate as the feed material. The Florida Industrial and Phosphate (FIPR) Institute has collaborated with worldwide experts in the field to address this issue. As a result, the industry is now offered three feasible options. Option 1 offers three methods for reducing MgO content in the concentrate from the Crago process, including adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step, dolomite flotation of the cleaner concentrate, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These methods could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20–40%. Option 2 involves crushing and grinding of high-dolomite phosphate pebbles followed by dolomite flotation at slightly acidic pH using a new collector that does not require phosphoric acid as a phosphate depressant, achieving a final concentrate analyzing less than 0.9% MgO at about 87% P2O5 recovery. Option 3 is a gravity separation technique using an innovative separation jig, and its full potential remains to be demonstrated.

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

Valuations in the mineral industry differ from those of other enterprises because mines and oil wells have a definite life so cannot be considered a perpetuity. This requires that in any mineral-property evaluation the recovery of invested capital is necessary during the life of the property. Capital write-offs for nonextractive industries are assumed to be continuously plowed back to sustain the operation and produce yields on the capital invested. The extractive or mineral industry, however, generally attempts to return to the investor both interest and principal during the life of a property. Normally this is done currently and the dividend includes both items. Where the mineral property possesses large reserves and the life factor approximates a perpetuity, the return on investment is generally comparable to that of industrial stocks. The valuation of a mineral property, at best, is based on educated estimates and judgment factors. This is particularly true as it relates to estimating selling prices over a long term or assessing the quality of management. Also, it is possible to make various assumptions as to rapidity of working out the deposit, varying time for start-up of operations, varying earning rates, so as to obtain different results with the same basic facts. Thus it is not surprising that two engineers, irrespective of their abilities, may not agree exactly even when given the same facts, but their results should be close enough to be used in establishing a fair value for trading purposes. The valuation is no better than the source of basic data and the soundness of judgment factors. Fundamentally the basic principles of mineral valuation are similar for base metals, sulfur, oil, or any other mineral. Each mineral, however, requires an engineer to have a knowledge of such factors as its occurrence, distribution, mining and processing methods, and marketing problems in order to gather and analyze all the facts and data that have a bearing on the earning potential of the property. Present Value of a Mineral Property In essence the present value of a mineral property is a sum of money in today's dollars that future income from the property are worth. It differs from the total anticipated earnings by the amount of the interest that the unrecouped investment could be expected to earn during the period of recoupment. Thus, if one could accurately estimate what a mineral property will earn during its life, after deducting all operating, administrative, capital, interest, and tax charges, the determination of present value would be a relatively simple mathematical calculation. Normally, where the expected life of the mineral property extends beyond 20 or 25 years, the discounted value of earnings beyond this period is relatively small. Interest in those physical properties of minerals which might be used to good effect in prospecting is not new. Early in the nineteenth century attempts were made in th'e Cornish mines to measure the natural electric potentials set up by chemical changes proceeding in the lodes. The distortion of the earth's magnetic field by bodies of strongly magnetic iron ore received early recognition in Sweden. Treasure-finders, working on the principle of electrical induction, appear to have been invented about eighty years ago, though were probably not then applied to mineral exploration. By the end of the nineteenth century Eotvos, a Hungarian physicist, had constructed a highly sensitive type of torsion balance capable of measuring the minute distortions in the earth's field of gravitation resulting from variations in the density of the materials composing the crust. During the first decade of this century he demonstrated its value in tracing rock-salt deposits in virtue of their low density compared with the surrounding rocks. Geophysical prospecting began to be recognised as having a very definite value and its development gathered momentum. Its great expansion took place after the 1914-18 war, when its value in oil exploration was amply demonstrated, and this expansion has continued to the present time and shows no signs of abating.Divisions of Applied Geophysics.The four main divisions of applied geophysics are electrical, magnetic gravitational and seismic. With the importance of ores of radio-active metals, one might add to these a radio-active division. The first two are more important to the field of mining, but techniques based on gravitational attraction have their uses in particular cases. Seismic methods are not generally suited to the exploration of metallic ores, but have proved of enormous value in the search for petroleum. With vast quantities of oil as the prize, more money has been lavished on the deve10pment and practice of these methods than on all the others put together.Geophysical Prospecting Methods.Geophysical prospecting methods may be used to detect a mineral deposit directly in virtue of differences in the intensity of some physical attribute common to it and the enclosing country rock. Examples of this are the detection of rock-salt by gravity measurements, or of iron ore by magnetic methods. Of much wider application, however, is the indireot approach in which the aim is to determine, by geophysical means, the geological structures controlling the disposition of mineral deposits. These structures may be partly known from geological work, in which case geophysical methods are useful adjuncts. Where, because of an 'unbroken cover of overburden, no useful geological information presents itself, scout drilling or geophysical prospecting are the only alternatives. Overburden is here intended to mean any covering material not, involved in the structures controlling the mineral deposits. Prospecting for petroleum amounts to the detecting of favourable reservoir structures, and as the chief types of such are the same the world over...

"The purpose of this paper are (1) to present a broad picture of the recognized methods of measuring the various forms of atmospheric pollution; (2) to evaluate the significance of such measurements; and (3) to suggest suitable methods for obtaining comparative information on the concentration of contaminants in city air.The atmosphere (the gaseous envelope surrounding the earth) consists of a mixture of gases. These gases and their usual proportions are:4/The volume of water vapor in the atmosphere ranges from almost zero (in very cold weather) to about 5 percent arid averages about 1.2 percent.Strictly speaking, any other substance in the atmosphere or an excess of any of the substances mentioned (with the possible exception of water) is a contaminant. Needless to say, there are many contaminants in the atmosphere.In accordance with their physical state, contaminants may be classified as gaseous or particulate, and the latter may be classified as solid or liquid matter. Particulate matter, especially when dispersed in some medium such as air or some other gas, sometimes is referred to as dispersoid, and the complete system of gas and dispersoid is referred to as aerosol.All substances on the earth are potential sources of atmospheric contaminants. Combustible materials (particularly fuel for heating and power), sea water, earth or soil, metals, and animals (including man) are some of the important sources of contaminants.Ordinarily gases are produced by chemical processes, whereas dispersoids are produced by both chemical and physical processes. There are two general dispersoid-producing processes: (1) Condensation, in which molecules join to form larger units or particles, and (2) disintegration, in which large units are reduced to the particulate range (which for the purpose of this article may be considered to be from 100 microns, or 1/254 inch, down to molecular size) by such processes as crushing, grinding, abrading, and atomizing.“Condensoid"" is a convenient term for dispersoids formed by condensation, and ""disintegrasoid"" for those formed by disintegration. The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national priorities.

As recently as the late 1920's there Were few indications that a 15-million-dollar-a-year industry would ever grow out of the mineralogic curiosity vermiculite. Today, it is an important industrial commodity, used primarily as an insulating material and lightweight aggregate, but with a wide range of other applications. The quantity of crude vermiculite produced and used in the United States increased 14-fold in the 17 years between 1935 and 1951. The vermiculite minerals are of secondary origin, formed by hydrothermal alteration of an ultrabasic igneous rock, generally pyroxenite, or by alteration of phlogopite or biotite mica or possibly other similar minerals. According to different authorities, vermiculite may originate either by direct hydrothermel means, by the weathering of biotite or phlogopite, or by a combination of these two agencies. Vermiculites frequently occur at or near the contacts of an acid intrusive rock, especially a pegmatite dike, with a basic or ultrabasic country rock.

This paper presents the ground settlement monitoring system used during the construction of two tunnels bored by two EPB TBMs, beneath the existing and active railway embankment in Bologna (Italy). The tunnels run close to large buildings and beneath bridges and other infrastructure. Data are collected from remote total stations and from electro levels installed directly on the railway tracks. The automated monitoring system acquires and analyses data then sounds an alarm in the event that there is a problem. Alarms are sent out in case of excessive tilt or settlement. Data is provided through a dedicated web application for multiple-party access, to gather, manage and store monitoring data.

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). Surface drainage samples, the usual media employed in mapping national territories, cannot be used for the geochemical mapping of carbonate terrains because there is no regular surface-drainage pattern on karst. Suitable sampling media have been studied in Yugoslavia, one-third of which consists of karst terrain. Sampling designs for the work were based on analysis of variance techniques. During initial investigations of various sampling materials in NW Yugoslavia sediment and aquatic moss from karst springs, along with soil, were established as the most appropriate media. Modified sampling procedures were then carefully applied along the entire Yugoslav karst belt, which includes terrains of contrasting topography, climate, pedology and vegetation. The studies indicate that climate and relief do not systematically influence the geochemical composition of soil. Regional and local variability was assessed for 21 chemical elements and the feasibility of producing stable regional geochemical maps was determined for a number of elements on the basis of sampling aquatic moss and sediment from karst springs and soil

Rhyolitic rocks are volumetrically significant in the eastern part of the Coromandel gold province, yet deposits hosted by rhyolite (Kapowai, Broken Hills, Neavesville, Wharekirauponga and Waihi Beach) are generally low grade and subeconomic, especially compared with andesite-hosted deposits. In contrast, rhyolitic volcanic centres in Nevada host a number of economically significant epithermal gold deposits such as Round Mountain, Sleeper and Bullfrog. The Nevada deposits are associated with 27-20 Ma continental arc volcanics dominated by ignimbrites (eg Round Mountain), or younger 17-9 Ma bimodal rhyolite-basalt volcanism related to extensional basin-and-range tectonics (eg Sleeper). The Round Mountain deposit is localised on a caldera boundary fault and the mineralisation was deposited soon after eruption of the host rhyodacitic ignimbrite. In other Nevada deposits, hydrothermal systems are linked to the closing stages of flow-dome complexes and mineralisation is localised along normal faults associated with extensional basin-and-range tectonism. The style and composition of the mineralisation is similar in both the Coromandel and Nevada deposits and consists of sheeted and stockwork quartz veins, containing electrum as the main ore mineral and only minor sulphides (mainly pyrite) Likewise, the vein minerals were deposited from low salinity hydrothermal fluids in the temperature range of 200-270¦C. Both the Neavesville and Round Mountain deposits are geochemically anomalous in molybdenum. The deep oxidation of the Nevada gold deposits, dry climate and low level of competing land uses combine to make it economic to mine and process very low grade ore (0.2 - 2.0 g/t Au) by heap-leaching with cyanide solutions in most areas of Nevada. Although extensive low grade gold mineralisation is known at deposits such as Wharekirauponga and Neavesville, it is sub-economic because of shallow oxidation and land use conditions that are unfavourable for open pit mining and heap leaching.

The Florida Department of Transportation District 6 (FDOT D6) began a study in 1987 for a master plan to improve the traffic circulation and congestions between the Port of Miami (POM) and downtown Miami, FL. This study included a tunnel connection between two man-made islands, the Watson and the Dodge islands. Though a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) was completed in 1992, the project remained on hold for about 10 years. In 2002, Florida Turnpike took over this project, re-evaluated its benefits to the lo-cal communities, determined its feasibility (specifically the tunnel options) and established a probable cost. In 2005, the FDOT D6 regained its charge over the project and concluded that a bored tunnel under Biscayne Bay is feasible. Its primary components are: ? Widening of the MacArthur Causeway Bridge, to accommodate truck traffic to the Port of Miami. ? A tunnel connection between Watson Island and Dodge Island, where the POM is located. ? Connections to the POM roadway system, either for the traffic from the city of Miami or for the truck traffic from I-395 to the POM. The project will improve access to and from the POM and provide a dedicated roadway connector linking the POM with the MacArthur Causeway (State Route 41/1) and I-395, specifically for the trucks in and out of the POM without going through downtown Miami. As identified in the project information memorandum (PIM), its primary objectives are to: ? Improve access to the POM, helping to keep it competitive and ensuring its ability to handle projected growth in its cruise and cargo operations. [ ] ? Improve traffic safety in downtown Miami by removing POM traffic, trucks and buses from the congested downtown street network and, in doing so, facilitate ongoing and future development plans in and around downtown Miami.

Over the decades, mine and mineral processing plant operations for the most part, have been found to have had adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time, mineral processing and mining operations produce mineral products that are indispensable to modern society. Thus, the sector has desirable and undesirable attributes simultaneously. The situation presents itself as a contradiction (i.e.) the mineral processing and mining operations are wanted by society, and at the same time unwanted by society. The existing methods of addressing the issues raised above have evidently not been very successful in reducing the opposition to new projects and to the related activities such as land acquisition. This paper attempts to show the relevance and applicability of TRIZ for addressing the issue. TRIZ, or Teoriya Rezheniya Isobretatelski Zadach, is a Russian acronym meaning Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ is a powerful tool that can be usefully applied to resolve such contradictions, using resources usually available within the system of interest. Accordingly, this paper introduces the issue background, followed by an introduction to some key concepts of TRIZ such as the 40 principles, separation principles and directed evolution. The paper goes on to apply the 40 principles to two case studies. The results show that TRIZ could be a useful tool to generate potentially innovative and sustainable approaches. Its most appropriate position would be as a supplement to current decision-making procedures, and as a validation tool to review existing solutions for possible improvements. The transport of large boulders in a furrow from a mining area to a nearby pond was considered. The furrow is filled with a mixture of water and soil particles flowing down to the pond at high velocity. Due to operating constraints, the slope of the furrow is reduced progressively. A relationship is derived, relating the slope of the furrow and the composition of the fluid to the maximum size and shape of the transported boulders. The characteristics of the boulders carried all the way down to the pond may then be determined.

High horizontal stresses and shear failure have been considered the major reasons that cause entry roof failure and falls for underground mining. Therefore, reorientation of the current mining systems or layouts or using angular crosscuts in mains or gate entries becomes more popular if a greater than normal horizontal stress is measured. However, reorientation of the current mining systems or layouts is always expensive and use of the angular crosscuts may weaken the pillar structure at corners. Therefore, cautions must be taken before any decision related to reorientation of the current mining systems or layouts or use of angular crosscuts is going to be made. In order to prevent entry roof failure and falls, the following two issues must be carefully examined and fully understood: 1. Which one, shear stress or tensile stress, is going to be blamed for entry roof failure? 2. Which one, horizontal stress, vertical stress, or local geological weakness plays a major role in entry roof failure and falls? This paper analyzes the mechanisms of entry roof failure and falls for underground mining in general examines the roof fall history at Springvale Colliery, and proposes the means of preventing roof failure and controlling roof falls for Spingvale Colliery in particular.
