The Tennant Creek goldfield is situated in the Northern Territory, 360 miles north of Alice Springs, or a tot~l distance of 1,300 miles north of Adelaide, and 600 miles south of Darwin. The auriferous area extends 20 miles north and south by 50 miles east and west. The overland telegraph line and the AIice Springs-Darwin road pass through the centre of the field.HISTORY, PRODUCTIONThe country comprising the goldfield was traversed by J. MacDouall Stuart between 1859 and 1861 in the course of his last three exploring expeditions, which terminated respectively at Attack Creek, Newcastle Waters and at the mouth of the Adelaide River. The explorer named Tennant Creek and also Mount Samuel, on which mining operations are now in progress. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and a relaying station established eight miles north of the site of the present township. There was no other settlement in the adjacent country prior to the opening up of the goldfield.Gold was discovered in 1926 on what is known as the Great Northern lease, three miles north of the township. The field was remote; the nearest plant at which gold ore could be treated was at Peterborough, in South Australia, 1,186 miles distant, and it was not until 1932 that the development of the field actively commenced.The production of the field from its inception to December 31, 1939, was 57,895 QZ. of gold, valued at £522,000, recovered from 61,793 long tons of ore, won from 98 mines. In 1940 seven of these mines had reached depths between 100 ft. and 230 ft., the workings of the majority being less than 60 ft. below surface.TOPOGRAPHY, WATERThe country is traversed by parallel and sub-parallel lines of hills trending east and west and rising to altitudes varying from 50 ft. to 100 ft. above the intervening valleys. The low ranges and isolated hills owe their survival to the resistance offered by their indurated, harder rocks to erosion which has removed the softer intervening formations. Their elevation and area depend to a considerable extent upon the presence of; and, the size of, the more or less exposed haematite formations, or are due to the influence of extensive siliceous dykes which traverse the locality.Watercourses head from the hills and either flood out on the flats within a short distance, or in a few cases follow longer courses to the northward. In some parts of the world explosions in mines are more commonplace events. Even in the more developed nations explosions have occurred in recent times. In some cases these mines have significantly lowered their lost time injury frequency rates and as such considered themselves to be ?safe? operations. The consequence of these explosions has been devastating. It is not just the loss of those underground, but also to the families that have lost people in them and the broader community that has lost friends, income, business opportunities, and in many cases support and sponsorships. It begs so many questions, ?What went wrong??; ?Why were the circumstances not foreseen??; ?What could have been done to prevent it??; ?How is it that no one stopped it, reported it, fixed it etc.??. Being held accountable for negligence, should not be overlooked, however this may not aid the processes required to find all the answers. If the nature of explosions is understood, the circumstances and tools to prevent them are readily available then the occurrence and reoccurrence are due to weaknesses or inadequacies of the systems of work or in the implementation of them. This paper restates the fundamentals of gas explosions, examines the options to control the underground environment through ventilation, gas management and monitoring, education and training. Case studies have been used to examine systematic failures in ventilation management. In some of these cases it is not so much, the system that had been developed, but the interpretation and implementation of the system that resulted in the failure and subsequent loss.

South32 (S32), a globally diversified mining and metals company, is listed on securities exchanges around the world (ASX, JSE, LSE), with its primary listing being on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Chapter 5 of the ASX Listing Rules (Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), 2019b) requires a mining entity to provide a summary of governance arrangements and internal controls with respect to its estimation processes, estimates and reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves annually. As a global company, it is also important to design and implement all governance processes and internal controls which can be used consistently across the organisation. The three lines model (previously known as the ‘three lines of defense’ model) is employed across South32 to manage risk where the first line (Practitioners) designs, implements and executes processes and controls to manage risk; the second line (Stewardship) identifies material gaps and improvement opportunities in the first line by monitoring conformance with the group requirements, legislative and regulatory obligations. Second line also assists with the development and improvement of core fundamentals based on industry good practise. The third line (Group Assurance) provides independent and objective assurance over the Group’s system of risk management and control. The estimation of resources and reserves for most of the operations within South32 is managed by the Planning function. The estimation process is part of the annual Life of Operation Plan (LoOP). The LoOP identifies and assesses the strategic alternatives for the development of an operation and recommends the preferred pathway based on value and risk. The LoOP starts with opportunity framing and the updated resources as an input and ends with the short-term plan and annual budget (the outputs). Ore Reserves estimates are one of the outputs from the LoOP. All the inputs and outputs follow internal standards and procedures which includes peer review and performance reconciliation. Stewardship (Second line) which is a centralised function has standards in place to ensure compliance to internal controls and external regulatory requirements. This includes assessment of the competence of Competent Persons, technical reviews, independent audits and training in the relevant chapters of the ASX Listing Rules, Guidance Notes and Appendices. Group Assurance (Third line) which reports to the Risk and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors ensures the design and operating effectiveness of the processes, standards and procedures associated with the estimation and reporting of resources and reserves. While the level of scrutiny has a different intent for each line in the three lines model, the overall purpose is to achieve a consistent outcome across the organisation

By the use of flotation tests it was confirmed that there are two functions of oxygen in sulphide mineral flotation. Sized samples of galena and chalcopyrite were sulphidized, washed free of excess sulphide ion, and then contacted with air-saturated water for certain lengths of time. The mineral was then transferred to a sealed laboratory flotation cell containing water with a known concentration of dissolved oxygen. Xanthate and frother were added and flotation continued for 1 min.Both the extent of mineral oxidation and the concentration of dissolved oxygen markedly affected the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite. The response to a change in either variable is dependent on the level of the other, but generally best flotation occurs with the maximum degree of air saturation of the pulp. Galena flotation is hindered by oxidation of the mineral beyond a small threshold amount but a similar effect for chalcopyrite was not observed...

The Indian Standards code of practice for design and construction of underreamed piles contains provision for installing such piles in expasive soils. In recent years, a large amount of research work has been carried out in the analysis, design, construction and performance of underreamed piles in expansive soils. This paper suggests that the results of this research field tests should be included in the code. Various additions and modifications as well as deletions that should be incorporated in the code are discussed.

A study of the various components contributing to energy costs and their relationships to generally trended operating data, such as tonnage, operating costs, etc., over progressively shorter time periods provides information for an energy audit. A study of annual data gives some insight into the importance of various energy components. As the time frame of the study progresses through monthly, daily and, finally, into quarter hourly data, the variations become more evident and, most important, strategies develop to minimize energy costs. The results of an audit conducted during the summer of 1978 at Wesfrob Mines Limited are reported to illustrate this important phase, prerequisite to a meaningful energy cost avoidance program. The balance of the paper deals with the energy conservation program at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited's Sudbury operations, the metering and control equipment, the commitment, the new energy accounting practices and, lastly, the policies. Examples of successful energy conservation endeavours include automatic peak electrical load control, waste heat recovery from mine air and compressor cooling water, energy reductions resulting from lower building temperatures and curtailment of idling loads. The use of pulse meters to measure the flow of gas, steam, compressed air and electrical energy, with their signals interfaced to process computers, allows monthly, daily and, if necessary, immediate reporting of energy and energy per unit of production information The program so reported at Falconbridge's Sudbury Operations is credited with an annual cost avoidance of .9 million dollars in a 14.0-million-dollar annual energy account

The new underground facilities for the LINAC Coherent Light Source project at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Menlo Park, CA, are constructed in very weak sedimentary rock interspersed with uncemented zones. In addition to several 21-footwide (excavated) tunnels, the NATM excavations include a large, 49-foot wide (excavated) cavern, an unprecedented size in this geology. The critical design issues include characterization of the weak rock, some shallow rock cover areas, and very stringent criteria for final invert slab movements within the tunnel. The design also incorporated severe seismic criteria, since the site is in close proximity to the San Andreas Fault.

The term" sandstone" is applied to a rock composed of mineral grains smaller than pebbles, cemented together more or less firmly. "Conglomerate" is the name given to a rock composed of pebbles, or pebbles and bowlders, of various sizes cemented together. If the pebbles are large and well rounded the rock is sometimes called " pudding stone." Although the term "sandstone" includes all varieties, certain specific terms are applied to types characterized by particular compositions, colors, or uses. "Quartzite" is a variety in which the individual grains are so firmly cemented together with quartz that the rock will fracture as easily through the grains as through the cement; "ferruginous sandstone" is one rich in iron as cementing material, or as grains, or both; "micaceous sandstone" is one in which mica is prominent; " arkose" is a feldspathic or granitic sandstone composed of angular grains; "calcareous sandstone" is one containing considerable calcium carbonate; and" argillaceous sandstone" is one containing considerable clay. The term "flagstone" is used for a rock that splits readily into sheets suitable for flagging; "freestone" for rock than can be cut or carved readily, and with equal ease in all directions; and" ganistel'," in the United States, for sandstone suitable for the manufacture of refractories. Others are named from their characteristic colors such as " bluestone," " redstone," or " brownstone."

"Prediction of wear on a microscale level in mineral processing equipment turns out to be a challenging undertaking. This is particularly true for cases in which the objective is to use such predictions for wear parts design. The key to obtaining such predictions has turned out to be the use of physics based models along with phenomenological constitutive equations. In this paper, two components of the HFS tool set, one for particles (DEM) and one for slurry (MPF), are used for modeling. These tools are applied to the simulation of wear of SAG/AG shell lifters/plates and wear in slurry pumps. In each case wear predictions are validated with plant measurements.INTRODUCTIONHigh Fidelity Simulation (HFS) has emerged as an important tool set for mineral processing plant equipment design and optimization (Herbst and Potapov, 2003; Herbst and Nordell, 2002; Herbst and Lichter, 2006). This tool set consists of Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) of particle motion, Multi-Phase Flow (MPF) for liquid motion, discrete grain breakage (DGB) for particle fragmentation and discrete grain liberation (DGL) for mineral liberation (Campbell, Potapov and Tsuji, 1997; Ferzinger and Peric, 1997; Potapov and Campbell, 1996; Herbst and Potapov, 2005).Three sample snapshots of basic HFS illustrating the use of each of the various types of mineral processing equipment are shown below.Figure 1 shows a snapshot of a DEM simulation of ball charge motion in a commercial scale Vertimill. This paper discusses how elemental analysis of conveyed bulk flows in real time using PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) technology has resulted in significant improvements in advancing plant control in mineral processing operations. Basis of operation of the PGNAA through belt, full stream, continuous, multi-elemental, real time analysis technology is explained. Capabilities and limitations in plant operating environments are discussed including comparison with other real time, online technologies through review of published information available for on-conveyor minerals applications. Case studies demonstrate benefits provided by this technology in two operating mines. An iron ore company had prior experience with the PGNAA analyser technology, implementing an early model in a minerals application in 2003 to develop confidence in its measurement performance and usefulness of the data. A number of analysers were subsequently included throughout the new plant design for extensive measurement and control of conveyed bulk flows, from conveying after mining through to rail load-out. A copper-gold company installed an analyser to address copper ore blending issues where an on-belt system was the only viable option for the degree of control required. Analyser suitability was evaluated through test work on site samples to determine customised multi-element precision guarantees for each application. Analyser results from normal operation are compared against laboratory analyses of multiple cross stream samples collected from conveyed flows to assess performance. Both projects discussed were able to realise benefits previously unattainable for plant quality control, surpassing capabilities of traditional technologies which were either unsuitable for measuring conveyed flows with adequate accuracy or in real time. Equipment payback within a few months was achieved for both sites. Through proven performance in these applications, the companies consider the technology an essential component in advanced plant control necessary in new process flow sheet designs, rather than an optimisation tool.

Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

Heat-related illnesses (HRI) are relatively common in both hot surface and underground mining operations. When workers are exposed to extreme heat or strenuous work in a hot environment, they become prone to heat stress. Heat strain is the result of the body’s response to external and internal heat stress. It is therefore vital for the conditions leading to heat strain be detected and treated in a timely manner. Heat-related illnesses are manifested by exhaustion and heat stroke. The predicted heat strain (PHS) [ISO 7933 (2004)] model has been developed to predict the health condition of the worker in terms of core body temperature and water loss. The PHS model tested in this study is based on eight physical parameters that are measured at different intervals during a work shift. They include air temperature, humidity, radiation, air velocity, metabolic rate, clothing insulation, posture, and acclimatization. The model predictions are then compared with a direct physiological measurement, such as core body temperature. We present the results of an extensive study that monitored and predicted body’s response to heat stress under different environmental and working conditions. The PHS model provided reliable results in most instances in comparison with other prediction methods currently in use in the field.

With the great increasing use of nickel metal hydride batteries recently, the waste of this kind batteries have been paid for close consideration. For the main reason that the waste of the batteries contained precious metals and lanthanide which cost great lose. This paper introduces the pyrometallurgical process of recovering nickel and cobalt from the waste of the nickel metal hydride batteries. Particularly, the waste for the process was from factory during the producing program. The use of designed solvent to divide nickel and cobalt in melted state from the waste is described. Also, the result of the nickel and cobalt and melted gangue that mainly consist of lanthanide oxide are included in details. The aim of the paper is to find out a simple and feasible way to reuse waste from nickel metal hydride batteries.

The projection of operating costs for mining, processing, and other site operating costs is an exercise which can be fraught with considerable peril. Not only are the physical characteristics of each mineral property unique, but a range of other factors will influence the consultant's approach to compiling cash flow estimates. This paper details some of the techniques used in estimating operating costs for use in order-of-magnitude cost studies and feasibility studies, and describes how to avoid common areas of difficulty. A series of examples relating to open pit gold mining and processing cost estimates illustrate these problems, and various corrective methods are described. The mining and treatment processes, and their associated cost elements, are followed in sequence of operation from on-going ore delineation through to disposal of the product. In addition the problem of assigning management, administration and overhead costs along with taxation allowances is addressed. Of critical importance is the application or possible misapplication of accrual procedures to the cost elements. In many cases such misapplication can introduce more pronounced errors with projects of short duration, such as the typical open pit/C.I.P. gold operation commenced in the last decade. The importance of providing verification of estimates depending upon the standard of the cost study is also investigated, and opinion is provided upon the minimum levels of verification necessary at various stages. Finally, the amalgamation of the various individual cost elements into a coherent whole is reviewed.

Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML) has constructed and largely completed the commissioning of an alluvial gold dredge designed to recover gold from a low grade gold deposit in the Grey River Valley, New Zealand. The most important resource that GRGML has are the people who are employed by the organisation. The low grade of the deposit necessitates the requirement to operate the dredge at optimum efficiency, which in turn requires the work force to be of high calibre and continually motivated. The primary prerequisite for employment at GRGML is for employees to be receptive to new ideas and have the adaptability to develop new skills and apply those skills to the changing demands of the workplace.   A continually changing organisational structure is utilised to meet the needs of a changing work environment. The adoption of an innovative site employment agreement allowing for flexible working hours has aided the achievement of good employee productivity and attendance.   Employees gain a higher quality of life by working a roster pattern involving twelve hour shifts and a four day on, four day off pattern.   Employees and management are communicating very well and working together to achieve organisational goals which will ultimately benefit the employees, the shareholders, the local community and the mining industry generally.

"The Texada Mill is a unique iron operation producing High Grade sinter iron concentrate and a by-product copper, gold, silver concentrate. The plant is complex and extremely flexible to handle the many varieties of ore. Two iron concentrates are made and blended. A coarse iron concentrate from primary grinding and a fine concentrate after rougher flotation to remove all the sulphides.All the tailings from iron processing are collected, dewatered, reground and floated for additional copper recovery.The entire milling operation has been carried out in all sea water for seven years and mixtures of sea, fresh, and reclaimed water for ten years prior to that.A very stable float results from the use of sea water at the natural pH8. Reagent Consumption is lower and Metallic Corrosion of mill liners and grinding media is actually less than local fresh water or mixtures of fresh and sea water.Marine growth in pipe lines can be periodically removed by violently bubbling high pressure air up through the water filled mains.Location:Texada Mines is located on tide water on the west side of Texada Island 100 miles northwest of Vancouver, B. C.The Island is served by a 30 car ferry, tug and barge and a scheduled air service from Vancouver to a company maintained air strip near the mine.The climate is moderate with about 30 inches of rain during the winter and relatively dry summers."
