It is said by some that the occurrence of a deposit of sulphide of antimony in Southwestern Arkansas has been known for fifteen or twenty years. Whether or not such is the case I am not prepared to say, but I am not able to find any record of such a discovery, or any analysis of antimony ore obtained from that section, published at so early a period. The present discoveries, that seem to be attracting some attention, date back to the winter of 1873-74. At that time a vein of ore was found by Mr. Robert Wolf, in honor of whom the vein was named, and still is called, "the Wolf lode." At the time of the discovery the ore was unknown to the prospector, and its composition was not thoroughly understood in that locality until samples were sent to several analytical chemists, who pronounced it sulphide of antimony—stibnite. Since the discovery of this ore there have been three mines opened, and a number of interesting minerals of the antimonial series have been found. I have had an unusually good opportunity to collect specimens from these mines; and it is owing to the constant inquiry concerning the character of these ores that I have collected for publication the results of quite a number of analyses, sufficient I trust to clearly point out their composition. This is one of the few localities in the United States where antimony ore is found in workable quantities ; I say workable quantities, because two different shipments of ore have been made to English reduction works, and in both cases excellent returns were made. The discovery of these deposits will, it is hoped, give rise to a prosperous and remunerative industry at no distant day, and when fully developed they may yield ore in sufficient quantity to supply the regulus for the home demand, thus adding wealth not only to those interested, but also to the State of Arkansas. The three mines are situated in the northern part of Sevier County, and may be reached by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway to Fulton, thence by wagon-road to Columbus, Nashville, Centre Point, and to the mines. "The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. This Bureau of Mines publication examines the potential impact on minerals of the tariff and nontariff agreements that resulted from the Tokyo Round of the Multilateral Trade Negotiations, which were conducted under the auspices of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. These agreements will affect minerals by reducing tariff levels and by changing rules by which they are traded internationally.

Effects of DA as a Grinding Aid on Selective Grinding of Low-Grade Bauxite Effects of DA (a copolymer of acrylic acid and acrylamide) as a grinding aid on selective grinding of low-grade bauxite were investigated in this study. The addition of DA into the grinding system enhanced the selectivity of grinding and increased the A/S ratio in the coarse fraction of ground product, leading to improved throughput of grinding mills and alumina recovery. The results showed that DA decreased the viscosity of slurry significantly and hence improved grinding efficiency due to low viscosity at a high slurry concentration. Both the hydrogen bond formation and chemical adsorption existed between DA and the surface of bauxite particles. The adsorption of DA on the surface of bauxite could decrease stress needed for crack initiation and extending during grinding, prevent new-born crack surfaces from rejoining, and promote the expansion of the cracks.

This project is exploring the potential for developing trees tolerable to degraded un-reclaimed mine site soils and tailings as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. The project incorporates growing tree seedlings in an underground greenhouse grown from seeds planted in the degraded mine soils in which they will eventually be planted. The outcome of the project is expected to lead to a successful solution for re-establishing tree growth in soils and tailings containing high metal concentrations with minimal post-planting human intervention. The research is being conducted in an underground greenhouse located 100 ft below the surface in the old Orphan Boy Mine Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) located on Montana Tech’s campus in Butte, Montana.

Past issues of Minerals and Materials have discussed such aspects of the economy as consumption and investment expenditures, interest rates, productivity, and international trade barriers and their effect on the minerals industry here and abroad. In this issue, we will (l) look at recent indications of a possible economic recovery, (2) present 1983 expectations reflecting the results of industry surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), and (3) briefly discuss the contribution of the U.S. mining industry to total gross national product (GNP). THE RECOVERY Throughout most of 1982, DOC's Composite Index of Leading Indicators provided evidence of impending improvement in the economy. The index increased moderately during eight of the months in 1982 and then jumped an estimated 3.6 percent in January 1983 (table 1). While the leading indicators continued to predict improvement, the general economy, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production, continued its slide through November 1982 (table 2). Finally total industrial production increased in December 1982 and continued on an upward path in January and February, as predicted by the leading indicators.

A unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT)Center resulted in a video CD-ROM training program for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Cooperation from everyone involved, including the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA),made this the product against which other training materials in the mining industry will be measured in the 21stcentury. This product’s versatility and wide application make it a tool that is as critical to a mine’s success as any earthmoving machine. The state and federal grant money involved allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

En ese sentido, el objetivo del texto es señalar la viabilidad del "método Cornish"como método alternativo, económico, de rendimiento óptimo y que no presenta riesgos para el personal o la labor realizada. Este método es aplicable en aquellas vetas uniformes no falladas, que tengan desde una potencia pequeña hasta aquella que sea posible apuntalar, así como en aquellas que requieran sostenimiento del techo en la veta mima o donde se realizen Shrinkages. El proceso del método se basa en la preparación de los tajeos, luego en la explotación(perforación y disparos), enmaderado, relleno del tajeo, recuperación de madera, las variantes en la preparación del tajeo y la recuperación del mineral. La única desventaja que ofrece este método es su peligrosidad, dado que si se aplica en zonas inadecuadas o sin la supervisión que garantice el cumplimiento de las normas preventivas, es preferible el uso de los "Square Sets". Sin embargo, la aplicación del método resulta mucho más productiva en rendimiento teórico puesto que alcanza de 7 a 10 toneladas por tarea de 8 horas y responde satisfactoriamente siempre y cuando las condiciones de las vetas lo permita.

The Queens Bored Tunnels consist of 11,000 feet of 19'-6" inside diameter tunnels mined through rock, mixed face and dense glacial till, constructed with bolted gasketed one pass reinforced concrete liner. The tunnels are to be excavated with a pressurized face TBM, either EPB or slurry. The construction of the tunnels will require ground stabilization in the mixed face area, instrumentation and monitoring of railway infrastructure, underpinning of bridges, relocation and protection of utilities, demolition of some industrial buildings, construction of open-cut approach tunnels and emergency exits and vent plants. The purpose of this paper is to describe the scope of work, the suggested methodology and the proposed construction schedule.

The estimated recoverable reserves in the area in the vicinity of Eska 2 mine are, 699,300 tons in the Chapin and Emery bas of the Maitland group. Those recoverable reserves are in the area between the Eska fault zone and Jonesville fault and extend down dip from the outcrops. No reserves were developed by the Eska 2 entry or by drill hole 14-16 in the Eska fault zone. The small quantity of reserves in the vicinity of the Eska 2 mine is insufficient to justify development of a now, modern .nine in this area. The estimated recoverable reserves in the area east of aka Creek are 974,500 tons in the Eska, Shaw, and Martin beds of the Eska group. Most of those reserves occur in the south limb of the syncline. It will be necessary to practice subjacent mining methods to recover these reserves in the Eska group. The Eska bed developed by the diamond drilling in this area comprises coal end few thin partings. The Shaw and Martin beds comprise two bunches of coal separated by partings, and the product from full-bed mining will require thorough preparation.

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. "In 1928, there were 47 fatal accidents in the California petroleum industry, 14.6 per cent more than occurred in 1927 when 41 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. This increase in the number of fatal accidents for 1928 has caused the first upward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1923. In no other year during the 6-year period have the fatalities in any one year been greater than those for the preceding year. This fact should be given serious consideration and study by the petroleum industry, and an endeavor should be made to cause the number of fatalities again to decrease and conform to the previous gradual declining trend of the fatality curve.The following chart shows the trend of fatal accidents during the past six years:Of the 47 fatalities in 1928, 30 occurred in the drilling and producing division, 1 in the pipe line and transportation division, 14 in the refining division, and 2 in the sales and marketing division. It will include a description of construction progress on the first contract to be let, which consists of a 248 m (815 ft) long launch box, 3.9 km(2.4 miles) of TBM tunnels and a tunnel sump; the packaging strategy for the remaining work; and the progress through Final Design of the remaining packages, including the two large span rock cavern stations.

The objective of this paper is to study the effect of annulus thickness on the quality of resin mixture for fully grouted resin bolt. Pullout and mixture tests were made in underground coal mines for the following arrangements: (a) borehole diameter 1.14 in. (29 mm), and roof bolt diameter 0.75 in. (19 mm) with steel wire around the roof bolt; (b) borehole diameter 1.14 in. (29 mm), and roof bolt diameter 0.75 in. (19 mm) with no wire around the roof bolt; and (c) borehole diameter 0.95 in. (24 mm) and a roof bolt diameter 0.75 in. (19 mm) with no wire around the roof bolt. The mixture test in steel pipe showed that the best resin mixture is for borehole with 0.95 in. (24 mm). The arrangement (b) produced big voids around the bolt. But for the 0.95 in. (24 mm) hole, arrangement c, the mixture was the best. It was corroborated with the pullout tests results where there is a difference in grout stiffness: the 0.95 in. (24 mm) borehole is about 10 times higher than a borehole with diameter 1.14 in. (29 mm). On the other hand, for the cohesive strength the difference is not significant. Numerical models were built to simulate the pullout tests, and also to simulate the roof support at an intersection. Convergence at two underground intersections, consisting of an immediate roof with laminated sandstone, was monitored to evaluate the performance of the roof supports, using the 1.14 and 0.95 in. (29 and 24 mm) diameter boreholes (i.e. arrangements ?a? and ?b?). The convergence readings showed that the 0.95 in. (24 mm) borehole diameter resulted in a smaller, although it was not significantly different.

Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. Comment is also made on the potential final cave profile if it continues along the current trend and some discussion is offered about possible mitigation measures if this were to come about.CITATION:Wilson, A D, Purba, A M and Sjadat, A, 2016. The Q-coda method for estimating the quality factor Q(f)= Qo(f)n was used to characterize seismic wave attenuation in a region of the Kaapvaal Craton that includes the mining areas of the Bushveld Complex and Witwatersrand Basin. Seismic waveform data, collected by locally distant stations of the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN), consisted of mining-related events with magnitudes ranging from ML 1.8 to ML 4. Q was calculated for nine different source-receiver pairs spanning the study region. A weighted average Q based on the number of available data gave an estimated attenuation relation for the study region of Q(f) = 327 f 0.81.

As stated in the preface, the nomenclature to be adopted for weights and measures has presented great difficulty. Agricola uses, throughout, the Roman and the Romanized Greek scales, but in many cases he uses these terms merely as lingual equivalents for the .German quantities of his day. Moreover the classic language sometimes failed him, whereupon he coined new Latin terms adapted from the Roman scale, and thus added further confusion. We can, perhaps, make the matter dearer by an illustration of a case in weights. The Roman centumpondium, composed of zoo librae, the old German ceniner of 100 pfundt, and the English hundredweight of 1112 pounds can be called lingual equivalents. The first weighs about 494,600 Troy grains, the second 721,900, and the third 784,000. While the divisions of the centumpondium and the centner are the same, the Libra is divided into 12 unciae and the pfundt into 16 unizen, and in most places a summation of the units given proves that the author had in mind the Roman ratios. However, on p. 509 he makes the direct statement that the centumpondium weighs 146 librae, which would be about the correct weight if the centumpondium referred to was a ceniner. If we take an example such as " each centumpondium of lead contains one uncia of silver", and reduce it according to purely lingual equivalents, we should find that it runs 24.3 Troy ounces per short ton, on the basis of Roman values, and 18.25 ounces per short ton, on the basis of old German. If we were to translate these into English lingual equivalents of one ounce per hundredweight, then the value would be 17.9 ounces per short ton. [ ]

Korean contract Mn-nodule field in the NE equatorial Pacific is composed of seven sectors showing average water depths of 4,513 - 5,025 m. Of the various factors controlling the property of Mn-nodules, water depth has a potential linkage to chemical composition, shape and abundance of nodules. To clarify such a possibility, we review more than 20 years of research data in one of the northern sectors (hereafter KR1) where there is a marked contrast in water depth. High-resolution seabed mapping clearly separates a northern part from a deeper southern part, cutting across the middle of the KR1. In terms of nodule occurrence, manganese nodules in the deeper north are comparatively larger (2-4 cm) with rough surface (t-type) and discoidal shape (D-type), while those in the south are generally small (<2 cm) with smooth surface (s-type) and irregular shape (Itype). In addition, the nodules in the north have higher metal contents including Cu, Mn and Ni. Such connections of water depths to nodule occurrence and metal contents are commonly observed in the Korea licensed Pacific nodule fields. However, the relation between nodule abundance, size and water depth may be a different story. In KR1, nodule abundance and size are probably controlled by morphological features especially in the north. Seamounts in the north continuously provide rock fragments as new nuclei for the nodules. As a result, the nodules can not grow larger than 2 cm and show the shapes of newly formed nodules (i.e., smooth surface and irregular shapes). Such an interpretation is supported by anomalously high backscattered intensities in the side-scan sonar image map of the north, which possibly reflects a younger generation of magmatic activity.

Introduction This paper attempts to summarize some of the major criticisms of drug testing. Eight problems with drug testing are discussed. These are: • It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know, • It is a distortion of priorities, • Drug use is not known to be associated with increased risk of occupational injuries, • Drug testing is proposed as a dangerously simplistic solution to poorly conceived problems, • In the absence of safeguards, it is unacceptably inaccurate, • In the absence of treatment commitments and confidentiality protection for persons dependent on drugs, it is an unethical practice of medicine, • Drug testing is an invasion of privacy, and • It will have a negative effect on treatment of persons with drug or alcohol dependencies. Employers&apos; need to know It does not measure something employers have a reasonable need to know. It is reasonable for employers and fellow workers to want to know if workers are functionally impaired (intoxicated) while on the job. Drug testing does not measure impairment. It measures the concentration of drug metabolities in urine or blood. Unlike measurements of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), drug metabolites are not correlated with impairment or intoxication. They indicate only drug use in the one to two weeks before a urine sample. And, in some instances, they indicate chronic use. Impairment caused by drug use, on the other hand, occurs immediately and declines rapidly within hours. Drug metabolites may linger for days afterwards. Drug metabolite concentrations in urine are a function of (Morgan, 1984; Schartz and Hawks, 1985; MMWR, 1983): • the amount and purity of drug consumed before taking the test, • when the drug was consumed, • whether the person was a chronic user, in which case a certain amount of drug metabolites would be stored in body fat and slowly released, • the person&apos;s metabolic rate, and • for metabolites in urine, any dilution effects of urine. This paper gives a description of the methods of mining employed at North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W.GEOLOGICAL NOTESThe main Broken Hill lode occurs as a replacement of tightly folded pre-Cambrian sediments. Replacement has followed certain stratigraphical horizons and the main bulk of the ore is found where these have been packed into the noses of anticlinal and synclinal folds.Throughout the mine the ore-bearing folds pitch north fairly consistently at 45 degrees, as a result of which two favourable horizons in the same fold appear in plan as separate orebodies and these are referred to as the &quot;Southern Orebody&quot; and the &quot;Northern Orebody&quot; respectively.The general dip of the orebodies to the west is about 60 degrees. A typical sill is shown in the plan of the 1,400-ft level (Fig. 1).Both the hanging wall and footwall rocks throughout the mine are weak and, as a result, it is necessary that the hanging wall must be well supported after ore extraction, to prevent subsidence.
