The iron ores of the Kiruna mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality except for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998, LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF (laser-induced fluorescence) analyzers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground, the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.

When the mining and milling of 1100 copper orebody commenced at Mount Isa a satisfactory grade of copper concentrate was difficult to produce. The major concentrate contaminants were fine pyrite and silica, particularly in the minus 10 microns fraction. Studies of the 1100 orebody showed that much of the fine grained pyrite and a proportion of the silica present in the ore contained carbonaceous matter in the form of complete or partial rims and as internal carbon films disseminated throughout grains. The hydrophobic surface property of the carbonaceous material resulted in inherently flotable fine pyrite and siliceous particles.The addition of a 60:40 mixture of nigrosine and dextrine, initially to a prefloat concentrate of the inherently flotable carbonaceous material and finally to the total copper flotation feed, successfully controlled the flotation rates of the carbonaceous pyrite and silica. The objective of a 25 per cent Cu concentrate grade was then achieved without decreasing copper recovery.

The effect of polyelectrolyte flocculants on the de-watering of a tailing suspension of very fine clay was investigated.Sedimentation and filtration experiments were carried out in the labqratory to characterise the de-watering properties of the tailing. The results were used to calculate the effect of flocculant additions on the drainage and vaporation components of the de-watering of a clay suspension ponded on to a sand drainage bed.A flocculant increased the drainage rate, but decreased the volume of water that could be removed by drainage leaving more water to be lost by evaporation.The sorptivity values measured in the laboratory were used in the de-watering equation previously established for the tailing to estimate the effect of flocculant additions on the time required to de-water the suspension from 18.2 to 60 per cent solids w/w. The calculated de-watering times were found to increase or decrease depending on the volume of water removed by drainage and the prevailing evaporation rate.

The effect of ligand and pH value was studied. Two issues in coprecipitation route to synthesize fibrous nickel-cobalt alloy precursor powder, com-position and morphology which are a first priority, are addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and experiments. The results show that suitable pH value range of coprecipitation of nickel ions and cobalt ions in theory can be obtained to maintain fibrous, excellent compositonal homogeneity and stoichiometry in coprecipitation products. Experimental demonstration is also carried out.

This handbook describes effective methods for the control of mineral dusts in mines and tunnels. It assumes the reader is familiar with mining. The first chapter deals solely with dust control methods, regardless of the application. It is a brief tutorial on mining dust control and will be of help to the reader whose dust control problem does not conveniently fit any of the mining equipment niches described in later chapters. The subsequent chapters describe dust control methods for different kinds of mines and mining equipment. This includes underground coal and hard-rock mines, as well as surface mines, stone mines, and hard-rock tunnels. Because dust sampling has so many pitfalls, a chapter on methods used to sample dust is included. For those occasions when there is no practical engineering control, a chapter on respirators is also included. Except for those listed as ?future possibilities? in the longwall chapter, the dust control methods described are practical and cost-effective for most mine operators. If controlling dust were a simple matter, dust problems in tunnels and mines would have been eradicated years ago. Unfortunately, most underground dust control methods yield only 25% to 50% reductions in respirable-sized dust. Often, 25% to 50% reductions are not enough to achieve compliance with dust standards. Thus, mine operators must use several methods simultaneously, usually without knowing for sure how well any individual method is working. In fact, given a 25% error in dust sampling and day-to-day variations in dust generation of 50% or more, certainty about which control methods are most effective can be wanting. Nevertheless, over the years, some consensus has emerged on the best dust control practices. This handbook summarizes those practices.

INTRODUCTION The Norad Expansion Project was located 10 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, within Cheyenne Mountain. The expansion areas to be excavated would be adjacent to the existing underground Norad complex, which would remain in operation during the work on the expansion. The original complex had been constructed approximately eight years earlier and had been in full operation for approximately five years. Phase I, Excavation was awarded the Tiro Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of Harrison Western Corporation, Denver, Colorado, in the fall of 1970. Notice to Proceed was given to Tiro on 28 December 1970. The project owner was the U. S. Air Force, design was performed by the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, who would also serve as the construction agency. [ ]

Introduction In recent years - even months - the number of articles on computers has increased rapidly. One can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing a computer-related article. The article usually explains how the computer will change our lives. Many of us have some concern about the nature and type of change. For most of us, though, the problem is lack of information and understanding about how computers work. In other words, how do we make cost-effective decisions about computers? This three-part series will explain, simply, what a microcomputer is, how it works, and how to decide if you need one. This first article will define terms and briefly discuss areas where computerization might be economic. The second article will discuss geology and mining applications. The third article will discuss plant, administrative, and geotechnical areas as well as the future of software development in the minerals industry. Terms and Concepts All computers have input and output devices and a central processing unit (CPU). Information - instructions and data - is communicated to the computer by means of input devices. These instructions to the computer are converted into language that the computer understands. This causes the instructions to be carried out in the CPU. The result of these operations is translated back into language that we understand. This information is then sent to output devices such as printers and video display tubes. Traditionally, peripherals were devices separate from the main-frame (the CPU and memory) and were used to input, output, and store information or instructions. Today, peripherals perform the same functions though they may be housed in the same cabinet as the CPU and memory. Historically, peripherals included all input and output devices not part of the mainframe. Input devices include keyboards, magnetic tape, and card readers. Tapes and disks are input as well as output devices. Output devices are printers, CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes), and any mass storage device capable of storing data when directed to do so by the computer or the program. In fact, any mass storage device that can give the computer data when requested is an input device. Mass storage devices include floppy disks (thin, round sheets of plastic covered by metal particles), and hard disks. The latter are thicker and more densely coated with metal particles. This allows much more information to be stored. Another type of mass storage is magnetic tape. Its type and size varies widely. Processing and Storage Any computer understanding must include how instructions and data are processed and stored. Information is stored as a positive or a negative field known as a "bit." There are eight bits in a byte. The bits can be represented as either a one or a zero. Thus the code for a byte representing the numeral one is 00110001. The byte representing the letter A is 01000001. These codes are from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). ASCII defines the standard set of characters including alpha, numeric, and special characters. The computer's memory has allocated locations where instructions as well as incoming information can be stored. All information and instructions are stored as binary numbers bit by bit - zeros and ones. The amount of data that can be stored is referred to as either thousands or millions of bits or bytes. The letter "K" is used to designate one thousand units. The letter "M" is used to mean one millon units (one meg). This report summarizes the results of research into the areas of the fragmentation and entrainment of Airborne Respirable Dust (ARD). The objectives of this program were four-fold: first, to review the present state of knowledge regarding ARD; second, to expand this state of knowledge through the identification of hypothetical microscopic mechanisms by which the coal is fragmented and the dust becomes entrained; third, to specify the informational requirements to verify or nullify these hypotheses; and fourth, to relate experimental techniques that will produce that required information. Additionally, insights are provided regarding potential methods of extraction and/or treatment which may reduce the concentration of ARD.

Base metal sulphide mineralisation on the northern end of Great Barrier Island is spatially associated with hypabyssal intermediate to acidic intrusives, in transgressive structures in indurated, complexly deformed greywackes and argillites. Copper predominates in the mineralisation, with minor accompanying lead and zinc and also some gold and silver. However, in some cases lead or zinc may be the dominant constituent. The mineralisation is generally characterised by only narrow envelopes of weak alteration (propyliticassemblages dominated by chlorite and epidote) and with only minor amounts of quartz accompanying the sulphides, which form a cement in zones of hydraulic fracturing. There are two distinct structural settings to the mineralisation: at MinerÆs Head, in a structurally complex situation in a shell-like zone of crackling in hornfelsed greywacke, in association with both north- and east-striking fractures and rubble breccias associated with the apical part of a large intrusive; and in very narrow, but very strike-persistent, 1inear steeply-dipping fracture zones, exposed on the north coast and inland areas near Tataweka.

Introduction A resource of more than 122 Gt (134 billion st) of minable trona and mixed trona and halite underlies an area of about 3400 km2 (1300 sq miles) west of Green River, WY (Culbertson, in preparation) (Fig. 1). In 1982, the total domestic consumption of soda ash (refined trona) was 6 Mt (6.7 million st) (Kostick, 1983). About 90% of this came from Wyoming trona. This enormous deposit occurs in the Wilkins Peak Member of the Green River Formation that is of Eocene age. This formation is derived from sediments deposited in a large lake named Gosiute. Lake Gosiute occupied the Green River Basin in southwestern Wyoming some 38 to 54 million years ago. The Wilkins Peak Member represents a restricted, evaporite-rich cycle of deposition when the trona deposits were formed. A total of 42 trona beds are known. Of these, 25 are of sufficient thickness and extent to be considered minable (Culbertson, in preparation). The production of sodium compounds from the trona deposits in the Wilkins Peak Member began in 1896 when wells were drilled within the present boundaries of the town of Green River. The purpose of the drilling was for extraction of sodium carbonate brines. Sodium carbonate (sal soda) was removed from these brines at a plant in Green River. Bedded trona was discovered in 1938 in a core from an oil well drilled south of Westvaco. In 1947, the underground mining of trona began. Production has continued from 1948 to date. Currently, five companies are mining trona and producing soda ash from the Wilkins Peak Member in Wyoming. Additionally, Allied Chemical Co. mines and processes trona for Church and Dwight's sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) operation in Green River. Competition in the soda ash industry depends primarily on the efficiency of mining and refining, allowing for lower-cost production. Newer plants and mine designs should increase efficiency. Solution mining holds promise as an even lower-cost method of mining. Employment in the soda ash industry is declining since the newer mining and refining methods are less labor intensive. Declines in employment, however, may be offset as production increases. Due to the large resource, the availability of minable trona should not be a problem for perhaps hundreds of years. The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.'fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

Triboelectric Separation - Beneficiation of Coal The performance of triboelectric separators is highly sensitive to the selectivity of the particle charging process. This paper presents a quantitative study on triboelectric coal beneficiation. The performance of different charging media was studied. Stainless steel was identified as having a work function between that of coal and silicate gangue and found to be the optimum charging medium for coal beneficiation. Recent results from separation tests were performed where silicate gangue was separated from crude coal using a parallel plate free-fall separator are illustrated.

Gerdau Monroe has installed and commissioned the Tallman Supersonic Carbon Injection system (TSCi™) for use in their 135-ton Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) located in Monroe, MI. TSCi™ is an innovative injection system with the primary aim of improving injection carbon delivery to the steel bath by increasing efficiency. It is proven technology with installations at numerous steelmaking facilities all over the world. Results from installation and commissioning of TSCi™ at Gerdau Monroe will be reported as well as on-going trials and optimization efforts. Standard injection systems deliver carbonaceous material from a vessel to the EAF using air where it is injected through a lance pipe or oxy-fuel burner. Using this method, material delivery to the EAF is limited by the pressure and velocity of the transport air. Loss of efficiency can be observed by looking at the quality of the injection carbon stream during operation or by measuring loss on ignition of EAF slag or off-gas system dust. TSCi™ uses a patented design and proprietary technology to improve delivery of carbonaceous material to the EAF. Using this method, savings at Gerdau Monroe were realized by reducing the amount of carbon used in each heat while maintaining or improving upon existing foamy slag practice. As well, significant savings were achieved as a result of reduced FeO content in the slag and improved recovery of iron. Additional savings can be realized by using a smaller mesh material to take advantage of lower material cost and higher injected surface area. Other inherent benefits to improved injection carbon include lower energy and electrode consumption, reduced refractory wear and reduced maintenance cost.

Maintenance strategy selection plays a significant role in mining design. The nature of maintenance strategy selection is a complex multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem including both tangible and intangible parameters which are often in conflicting with each other. Moreover, when decision makers are uncertain in determining and defining the ratings and the weights of alternatives and criteria respectively, fuzzy theory provides an appropriate tool to handle the existing uncertainties. In this paper, a new fuzzy MCDM method based on the concepts of TOPSIS and AHP was proposed to evaluate the feasible maintenance strategy. The linguistic terms are employed to assess the ratings and weights. Fuzzy AHP is utilized to calculate the weights of the evaluation criteria; then, the rankings of alternatives are computed based on fuzzy sets theory and TOPSIS. A real world case study is presented to illustrate a potential application of the proposed model.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has been a leader in resource recovery research since it was founded in 1910. Until the early 19601s, most of the projects were concerned primarily with the task of extending and improving conventional technology oriented to secondary metals and minerals upgrading and processing for marketable products of highest value. By the mid-1960's with the passage of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965, all resource recovery research programs were increased in scope and intensity as an effort to solve the growing number of environmental problems and the rapid depletion of domestic energy and mineral resources. Many new materials were investigated including urban refuse, manufacturing, industrial wastes, and stockyard wastes. The objective was to promote maximum recycling as the most practical answer to problems of waste disposal, pollution control, and the short supply of minerals and energy. The new research projects ranged from the conversion of animal manure and other organics to oil, to the recovery of precious and common metals from demolished aircraft and electronic scrap. This profile includes brief descriptions of many selected research projects that typify, the total spectrum of Bureau of Mines research in the important field of resource recovery.

The Leadville mining-district (fig. 1) covers approximately 8 square miles adjacent to Leadville, the county seat of Lake County, Colo. It is famous for its large production of rich ores containing zinc, lead, copper, gold, and silver. Some manganiferous ores also have been produced.

No noticeable international economic recovery occurred during the first half of 1982. Industrial production continued to fall in the United States, Canada and Italy and to hold steady in France. Modest increases in production occurred in Japan, England and Germany, although some decline took place from March to April. The U.S. mining industry has been more severely affected by the world recession than the U.S. economy. This is not immediately obvious when comparing the U.S. mining industrial production index from 1981 to 1982, which decreased 8.5 percent, as compared to a 7.1 percent decline for total domestic industries. However, "mining" industry statistics in the U.S. national economic accounting system include petroleum and natural gas as well as minerals. When metal mining is isolated, the decrease in production from 1981 to 1982 is 19.3 percent. If metal mining production continues to perform at the same rate during the third and fourth quarters of 1982 as during the first half of the year, declines from 1981 levels will be quite severe. Aluminum will have declined 22 percent, copper 18 percent, iron ore 24 percent, lead 3 percent, steel 29 percent, titanium 2 percent and zinc 25 percent.

INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Contract CQ028 Scope and Construction Schedule This contract consists of the excavation of an open-cut from the east side of Northern Boulevard, through an existing MTA-owned rail yard and into the western limits of Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard. E. Wood. - It is shown that explosion shattering by impact is favored by large charges and by low ratio of water to charge. For 400-gram charges of dolomite crushed through 48 mesh the steam costs are less than 5 cents per ton of dolomite obtained. This is within the range of present steam costs for ball-milling dolomite.Electrical Properties of Minersl Aggergates I. Natural and Artificial Aggregates Crystallized Lead Sulphide By R.S. Dean and John Koster - This paper deals with the electrical properties of natural and synthetic galena. It is shown that massive crystalline galena has a normal positive temperature coefficient of resistance, whereas fine-grained steel galena has a negative temperature coefficient, the curve R v. T being exponential in form. That steel galena behaves somewhat like a leaky condenser is indicated by ballistic and alternating-current bridge measurements. In determining the cause of the erratic results of alternating-current resistance measurements it was observed that the measured re¬sistance was a function of the current through the specimen. The direct-current resistance was found to be proportional to the square of a superimposed radio-frequency current and independent of the frequency.The influence of grain size or the amount of metallic interface on the voltage-current characteristics at various temperatures on synthetic galena pastilles was studied. It is proved that the volts v. amperes curves are linear for all sizes and temperatures, that they have an intercept which is apparently a linear function of the temperature, and that their slopes are exponential functions of the temperature and give rise to a negative temperature coefficient of resistance.Apparatus for determing the Magnetic Constants of Mineral Powders by V,H, Gottschalk,and C. W. Davis.- A modified isthmus permeameter having a spark-suppressed primary and a multiplier in the secondary circuit to regulate the effect of capsules functioning as a twin isthmus is used to obtain quantitative data and normal induction and hystersis curves from small amounts of powdered material at fields surpassing 3.000 oersteds. Data and curves are given to demonstrate the calibration of the apparatus and the reproducibility of its results. Applications and limitations of the apparatus are noted.Magnetization Curves for Magnetite Poeders by V. H. Gottschalk and F. S. Wartman.- This paper gives measurements on four lots of purified and analyzed magnetites in mixed fractions with especial reference to the variation of permeability with grain size and with dilution by an inert material."

In fluctuating airflow, continuous air velocity recording is the most reliable method of air velocity measurement. It allows for fast recognition of changes and the calculation of long-term averages. Also, it enables the mine operator to identify when the airflow has decreased to a point requiring action. Using ultrasonic anemometers provides an accurate option for continuous air velocity monitoring. This paper provides information about the effect of common obstructions in underground mining on air velocity readings. Stationary and moving obstructions are used to represent workers and equipment that would cause discrepancies in measured airflow. Also, it is important to know how large of a sample size is required to ensure reasonable accuracy of results. Statistical analysis is used to evaluate the required sample size. The sampling procedure is further studied by comparing two different sample rates. The results show that obstructions provide noticeable differences in air velocity measurements. Also, movement of obstructions can be recognized from changes in results. Surprisingly small sample sizes provide reliable air velocity information. Standard sample rates are found to be suitable for the underground environment.
