Ligas com memória de forma (LMFs) são ligas metálicas capazes de recuperar o seu formato e tamanho original após deformação plástica quando aquecidas acima de uma temperatura crítica. Diversos casos de possíveis aplicações paras as LMF têm sido justificados no campo científico, com alguns poucos casos identificados para aplicação em massa, existindo uma ausência na literatura de uma análise crítica da aplicabilidade das mesmas que leve em consideração aspectos industriais e de mercado. Dessa forma, se faz necessário um estudo mais aprofundado que correlacione as ideias científicas geradas com a produção industrial e com a comercialização de LMFs. Nesse contexto, o trabalho visa através de levantamento e análise de patentes e artigos científicos, assim como por contatos industriais, estabelecer uma relação entre o desenvolvimento científico e o comercial das LMFs. Mais de 11 mil artigos e mais de 7 mil patentes foram produzidos nos últimos 16 anos, sendo observado uma tendência crescente da criação de conhecimento de LMF, o qual já vem sendo aplicado na indústria, justificando assim os esforços observados no campo científico. A área biomédica se destaca como a mais bem estabelecida no campo das LMF, com destaque para a utilização das ligas a base de NiTi.

"Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business (CPB) is comprised of Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO) in Northern Ontario, Canada’s only operating phosphate mine, and Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO) in Alberta, which manufactures the fertilizer from KPO’s concentrate.Production from KPO’s South Pit commenced in 2009 and introduced contaminant problems: high aluminium from crandallite and kaolinite clays. These issues caused a drastic decrease in P2O5 recovery and throughput in both plants. KPO attempted to reduce Al clays by means of aggressive desliming. Meanwhile RPO experienced high amounts of dissolved metals in their feed that are detrimental to fertilizer production.This paper covers the mineralogy of the problem, its impact on contaminant separation at KPO, on RPO’s process and on Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business as a whole.Potential solutions to the problem are discussed and analysed, including a process change to deslime high aluminium streams more aggressively and high grade ore flotation, which is atypical at KPO. The latter is a demonstration of the value of communication between the concentrator and the client, as KPO accepted a recovery loss and increased production costs in order to increase overall CPB profits. General lessons learned are discussed, followed by a section on ore blending.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the existence of the Kapuskasing phosphate deposit has been known since the 1970s, it’s only since 1999 that Agrium has been operating the Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO). The mine consists of three major pits (Center, North and South) from which a mining contractor hauls the apatite ore to the Agrium concentrator. The beneficiation plant processes the ore, separating contaminants such as Fe, Mg and Al which are detrimental to its client, Agrium’s Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO). This document is not intended to cover every conceivable application or requirement of grouting. However, it does provide standard practice requirements for qualifications, materials, equipment, testing, and production procedures for the professional engineer to incorporate into their project specific requirements.

Uncertainty with regard to estimated grades and tonnages of a mineral deposit demands risk assessment in order to build investor confidence and attract the interest of other stakeholders in the success of a project. Uncertainties associated with Mineral Resource estimates can lead to unreliable production schedules and unpredictable cash flows. However, the techniques used in the mining industry to determine these uncertainties are inconsistent, because the important decisions taken in the process are solely dependent on the responsible Competent Person (CP), without limitations. This leads to disparities between different CPs’ results, using data-sets from the same drill-holes. The various standard codes for public disclosure provide guidelines and recommendations for the classification of Mineral Resources and Reserves but do not provide details on, for example, the amount of geological and geostatistical information needed to qualify for each category of Resources and Reserves. The parameters used to generate the classification categories are subjectively assumed by the responsible CP. In this paper we investigate the impacts of different CPs’ judgements on resource classification, using the same data-sets. The results underpin the need for the mining industry to develop a uniform Mineral Resources and Reserves classification framework that can minimize or avoid significant discrepancies that lead to potential misleading public disclosures.

Numerous widely distributed pegmatites of the southern Black Hills of South Dakota contain small amounts of beryl, and two minor deposits are known in the northern Black Hills. Few mines have produced more than 50 tons, and the current, rate of production for the area is about 100 tons annually. Total production, since the first records, is 2,358 tons. Most of the deposits contain less than 1 percent beryl, although the beryl zones in several deposits contain 2 percent beryl or more. Estimated reserves of beryl total 11,824 tons, and an additional 234 tons has been measured; there are other unestimated reserves. The pegmatites are in a belt about the margin of the Harney Peak batholith in the southern Black Hills, although they fail into three districts. The most important, from the point of view of production and reserves, is the Keystone district. Many deposits also are found in the vicinity of Custer and Pringle. Small amounts of beryl occur in the dikes near Hill City. A little beryl has been produced from the Tinton district in the northern Black Hills, and an undeveloped dike has been discovered on Whitewood Peak near Deadwood. The beryl-bearing pegmatites are principally coarse-grained intergrowths or massive segregations of feldspar, quartz, and mica. Some of them contain notable amounts of lithium minerals, as well as some tantalite, columbite, and cassiterite.

That there is wide interest in the preparation and properties of metallic zirconium and its salts is indicated by the many articles recently published in scientific and technical journals and the many patents issued. The compounds of zirconium have numerous important uses and more uses will doubtless be found. In the course of the special work on rare metals that were of military importance during the war, the authors of this bulletin were detailed to the Golden mining experiment station of the Bureau of Mines to prepare metallic zirconium and to investigate its properties. A number of investigations in recent years have indicated that sintered or coherent zirconium metal is very resistive to acids; that it can be used for electrodes, and it probably will find metallurgical uses. A steel containing zirconium has been proposed for use in armor plate and automobile parts, and nickel-zirconium alloys have been suggested for high-speed cutting tools and for cutlery. Numerous articles in scientific journals have recommended the use of zirconium oxide as a refractory, an abrasive, a pigment in paints, and as an opaquing agent in enamel ware. The salts have been used in the textile industry' as a mordant and also for weighting silk. When the authors began their investigation, they found it necessary to collect all of the available literature on the general subject of zirconium and its compounds. Pure salts could not be obtained on the market, and in order to get these, as a preliminary step to the preparation of the metal, the literature had to be classified and the methods of preparing the salts investigated. Also, there was much difficulty at first in making satisfactory analyses, and this phase of the work received careful attention. As it was necessary to begin with a historical review of the literature, such a review is given as Part I of this report, and a bibliography is included as Part IV. References to the numbered items in this bibliography are made throughout the text, the usual footnote references being omitted. Analyses of the products and conclusions as to their purity are given under the descriptions of methods of preparation. A table showing the properties of the amorphous metal, and another showing the properties of the coherent metal, will be found under appropriate headings in Part II. No attempt has been made in the historical review to discuss fully all the published information about zirconium and its compounds, but only such material has been assembled as has a direct bearing upon the present work. Considerable difficulty was experienced in collecting this material because of the confusion of terms by various authors who perhaps did not thoroughly understand the chemistry of zirconium.

Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project is under construction using shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) for a total length in excess of 50 km. Phase 1 of the project included 36 km of tunnel divided into four lots (1, 2, 3, and 4) of nine km each. Lots 3 and 4 of this tunnel for a total length of 18 km were combined into one award and have been constructed using a double shield (DS) TBM or one path system. Extreme ground convergence in some sections of the tunnel has stalled TBM performance in early reaches, due to face collapse and shield jammings. This paper presents the latest update on the tunnel progress and impact of ground convergence on machine performance based on the information obtained from field observations. Also, the method and results of tunnel convergence measurements were studied in conjunction with geological parameters and an attempt was made to correlate TBM operational parameters and ground convergence. The result of the analysis indicates a good correlation between machine?s operational parameter and tunnel convergence and can be used as an indicator of the potential for high rates of convergence. An early warning on ground convergence is essential for taking precautionary measures to avoid TBM jamming and related long delays and costs.

The success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining depends on many factors. Most important is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three categories: • Geometric conditions - machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity; • Physical conditions - material properties, rock strengths, ability to dig, driving surfaces; and • Chemical conditions - acid-base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden. This article incorporates these conditions by conceptually modeling compliance-oriented contour mining methods, particularly haulback methods, using the combined front-end loader (FEL)/ truck, tractor/scraper, and FEL-truck and scraper. Engineering analyses, including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces) and drainage requirements can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized, three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple, two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

Microindentation testing using the square–pyramid–shaped Vickers indenter is a well-established technique to determine the microhardness of minerals and materials. However there is a paucity of published microhardness data from Fe ore samples. It is acknowledged that an iron ore’s particle mineralogy and texture is critical to its processing properties, and it is therefore considered that the microhardness of different mineralogical/textural types may also relate to these properties. Mineral microhardness potentially provides inputs to the modelling of breakage characteristics during comminution, as well as the relationship between mineral chemistry and microhardness, and mineral microporosity and microhardness. Microhardness can be determined as single crystal microhardness, for more coarsely microcrystalline samples, or as ‘aggregate microhardness’ for cryptocrystalline or finely microcrystalline samples.Variations in the texture and mineral chemistry of common Fe ore minerals (eg martite and microplaty hematite, ochreous and vitreous goethite etc) are well established and this study provides microhardness data on different textural forms of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides from a variety of different Fe ore deposits. The data indicated that in general, the mineral grain size, microporosity and texture were the main influences on Fe (oxyhydr)oxide microhardness. There were no apparent systematic variations between microhardness and minor element mineral chemistry, with the possible exception of Al content in goethite (for goethites with Al content >0.5 wt per cent), and for goethite total element contents >90 wt per cent (determined by electron probe microanalysis, EPMA). Higher Al concentrations and lower total element concentrations in goethite EPMA analyses correlated with lower goethite microhardness. Microporosity and grain size were more important than texture to hematite microhardness. Different textural forms of dense hematite (eg martite, recrystallised interlocking hematite and specular hematite) with similar grain size exhibited comparable microhardness. Microhardness values for hematite and hydrohematite with little or no evident microporosity were also similar, whereas more porous forms of martite, microplaty hematite or hydrohematite exhibited lower microhardness.CITATION:Peterson, M J, Manuel, J R and Hapugoda, S, 2017. Benchmarking, comparing an operation or process with the industry standard, is known to be a useful method for identifying plant optimisation opportunities, and in many cases providing the pathway to realise the benefits. The difficulty is generating the database of plant data necessary for a benchmarking exercise. Larger companies can benchmark internally; this option is not available to smaller companies, and the full value can only be realised with a comprehensive “industry wide” approach.The Gold Technology Group at Curtin University through the AMIRA P420 series of projects has undertaken several comprehensive metallurgical industry surveys in the gold industry over the last two decades. Analysis of these surveys has demonstrated areas where many operations can benefit from re-assessment of their operating practices.This paper will review the work undertaken by the Group in this area, in particular the 1999 surveys of gold companies in the Australasian region, and the 2012 international survey of the industry. The challenges of, and opportunities arising from these surveys will be discussed. Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.

Acid recovery employs ion exchange (I-X) resin as separation media for inorganic acids from dissolved metallic salts by physical adsorption and without the use of chemicals. This technology has been used for years on spent etching and plating liquors to recover acid for reuse in the bath and to reduce waste acid neutralization costs. It is also used for electrolyte treatment to facilitate valuable metal recovery via acidity reduction. TETRA's ccrxr'" I-X contactor has been used successfully for acid separation from its metallic salt counterpart in a simple, continuous operating mode using strong base anion resins. Efficient separation is enhanced by acid reconcentration to nearly its original strength or as high as 14-20%. Continuous treatment also recovers heat to the tankhouse or bath and improves metal quality due to consistent acid quality. Conventional fixed bed ion exchange (I-X) systems are impractical for acid recovery because of complex control design and large resin inventories needed to process very low liquid-to-resin treatment ratios associated with strong acid concentrations.

The paper point out how APC (Advanced Process Control) can be implemented in a stepwise fashion, where each step demonstrates a return and builds towards the overall achievable benefit. Initial efforts focus upon areas that demonstrate the highest potential for quick payback. By attacking small, contained scope, the APC solution is manageable from both a commercial and technical perspective. While this approach results in a slower implementation with correspondingly delayed payback, it provides tangible benefit and addressees the fiscal reality of many operations.

The mineral industry in India is an important contributor to the country?s GDP and foreign trade, and also a significant source of employment generation. The industry is distributed almost all across the country and has operations in some of the remotest areas, where it has also served as a sole source of infrastructure development. India produces 89 minerals, out of which four are fuel minerals, 11 metallic, 52 non-metallic and 22 minor minerals. The mining leases are occupying about 0.21% of the total land mass of the country. Indian mining industry is characterized by a large number of small operational mines (approx 3000 mines). Appropriate systems have been put in place to ensure sustainable growth of the sector, which include formulation of procedures for scientific prospecting and mining and development of a mechanism of prior environmental and forest clearances for mining projects. Main emphasis is to protect the health and safety of mine workers, as well as to safeguard the interests of indigenous people through rehabilitation and resettlement packages. Efforts are under way to mainstream the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in order to promote equity in the mining industry. The issue of scientific closure and reclamation of the abandoned mine sites poses a major challenge. Present paper illustrated several initiatives have been taken in this direction along with case studies, which could be replicated in other parts of the country.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1992 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. However, the continent's total output for a number of major mineral commodities declined relative to the volume produced during 1991. (See tables 1 and 2.) The most conspicuous declines in mineral production from 1991 to 1992 were for cobalt and copper (declines of 28.6 % and 23.4 %, respectively), which could be partially attributed to mining and metal processing difficulties caused by political and economic disruptions in Zaire and for uranium (12 % drop), for which much of the continental production decline was ascribed to Namibian cutbacks in response to lower world prices. The severe regional drought also adversely affected the mineral industry in a number of sub-Saharan nations.

The abundances and abundance relationships of lead, zinc, copper and silver in the major sulphide lenses at Broken Hill are examined, and their possible geochemical significance discussed.When expressed as atoms per cent, zinc is the most abundant base metal throughout the whole .group of orebodies, the highest average lead: zinc ratio (No. 2 lens) being about 0·45, the lowest (No. 1 lensZinc Lode group) being in the 0·12-0 ·14 range. Lead and silver are clearly higher in the lower two orebodies, but the abundance of zinc shows no apparent relationship with stratigraphical position. Among the base metals copper is conspicuously low and remarkably uniform, a feature noted in other conformable orebodies.Although, as has been recognised for many years, abundances of silver and lead, and lead and zinc, are sympathetically related, correlation within the pairs is variable and generally of low degree. Silver and lead show distinctly the better correlation, particularly in No. 3 lens. On the basis of lead: zinc ratios, No. 2' and No. 3· lenses, on the one hand, and the No. 1 lenses, Rhodonitic and Siliceous Zinc Lodes on the other, constitute two groups. However on the basis of silver : lead ratios, No. 3 lens stands alone, No. 2 lens showing clear affinities with the higher layers. Ternary relationships between copper-zinc-Iead and silver-zinc-Iead emphasize the very close constitutional relationship between the No. 1 lenses and the two "zinc lodes".The possible implications of these relationships are then discussed in the light of the' two principal theories-hydrothermal replacement or chemical sedimentation-held for the formation of the Broken Hill ores. It is pointed out that the ratios of the four metals in the ores are rather different from those found in most igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in seawater. For 'example, whereas copper and zinc are present in almost equal amounts in most terrestrial materials, copper in the ores is only about one-hundredth of the amount of zinc. Lead has increased somewhat, but the ratio of silver to lead has fallen; in spite of its recognition as a source of silver, the Broken Hill lode is impoverished in silver with respect to lead as compared with most common terrestrial materials.No solutions are offered to these prob'lems of abundance. "The outlook for Eastern Canada is decreased coal production and for Western Canada increased production. The market for Western coal is expected to reach 40 million tons per year in metallurgical and thermal-power markets.Technical developments in Eastern Canada include successful methane drainage experiments, modifications to the shearer-loader to improve cutting rates, mechanized mining of a tail-gate stable and mechanical stowage of level brushing. In Western Canada, the most modern equipment is used in mining, beneficiating and shipping coal. Underground hydraulic experiments were started in 1969. The importance of reclamation was recognized and plans have been made to re-vegetate disturbed areas and mine dumps.The Mining Research Centre closed the field office in Nova Scotia and is preparing to open a new field office in Calgary, Alberta."

"The nature high carbon graphite with fine particle size has low commercial value because of its narrow application range. In order to improve its value, this paper has studied the methods for nature spherical graphite. The nature spherical graphite can be used as the battery material in the field of electronic product battery and new energy automobile battery, basis on the physicochemical characteristics and particle feature of graphite. In this research, the Fixed Carbon (FC) grade of the graphite sample is more than 95.0% and the particle size of the graphite sample is from +325 mesh to -100 mesh. There are many methods for nature spherical graphite, including the fluidized bed airflow mill, the hydro-spheroidization mill and micropowder mill. The testing results indicate that the method of ACM micropowder mill is the best because the spherical shaping ratio and production yield of spherical graphite are both the best.According to the testing results of the ACM micropowder mill, the best process includes two stages of coarse crushing, four stages of fine crushing and twelve stages of shaping. And two kinds of spherical graphite products can be got, which are the product of D50=22.85 µm and the product of D50=15.43µm, and the whole yield of them is up to 54.43%. So, it lays a foundation for the high value utilization of this kind of graphite resources.INTRODUCTION Graphite is isomer of the diamond. Graphite ore resources are mainly concentrated in China, Brazil, India, followed by Czech, Korea, Mexico, Canada and other countries. Graphite ore has lots of characteristics by itself crystal structure, such as good resistance to high temperature, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, good lubricity, plasticity, chemical stability and so on. So, Graphite is widely used in metallurgy, machinery, electrical, chemical, petroleum, nuclear industry, defense industry and other areas. [1,2,3] Natural graphite ore has low geological Fixed Carbon (FC) grade. FC grade should be enriched to more than 94.0% by mineral processing. [1,2] The particle size composition of this high carbon graphite affects its application value. The part of +100 mesh particle size has high application value. The part of -100 mesh particle size has low value because of its limited application field. In order to improve the value of-100 mesh particle size, this part high carbon graphite can be made into spherical graphite. And the value of the spherical graphite is great, it is more than 8 times of the feed. This paper has lots of tests for spherical graphite preparing with the fine particle size natural high carbon graphite. And it lays a foundation for the high value of this kind of resource."

Resonance re-emission from nickel vapour affords a convenient method for isolating the resonance lines at 3415A, 3515A, and 3524A. The vapour is generated by cathodic sputtering and is illuminated by light from a nickel atomic spectral lamp. The resonance lines thus isolated can be usefully employed for absorption measurements on mineral samples where the nickel concentration is too high for measurements with the more sensitive line at 2320A. A spectrophotometer employing a resonance lamp as monochromator possesses several advantages where a great number of determinations are made under routine conditions. The wavelength setting is stable under even the most rigorous conditions and with the provision for automatic setting of full scale deflection the instrument requires virtually no adjustment. The instrument has been used under routine conditions for the determination of nickel (in the range O· 05-2 per cent) in mineral samples.
