Coordination of combatant units necessitates maintenance of intricate communications equipment, in the construction of which high-grade sheet mica is essential. Scrap, ground, and the poorer qualities of block mica, which are less essential to the military program, are not considered in this paper. It will welcome comments, criticisms, and contributions of data that may assist in making later editions of this circular more accurate, or in developing more fully the bureau's mineral files pertaining to sulphur. Throughout this paper sulphur is used to designate crude sulphur or brimstone, not sulphur produced from pyrites or' smelter gases.

A PERMANENT assay office is commonly established as part of the general plant equipment of operating gold and silver properties, but during the development stage of a mine, the cost of such an office is usually so assay work must be done elsewhere. The recent renewal of interest in hydrometallurgical routes for copper production has been brought about by the possible future reliance on mixed ores and lower grade deposits, environmental aspects, and energy considerations.A number of hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of copper have recently been proposed. Flowsheets are developed for two processes which incorporate several treatment methods being experimentally studied in Australia.In the first process a cupric chloride leach is followed by electrowinning whilst the second is based on the formation of cuprous ions, stabuized by acetonitrile and subsequent disproportionation to cupric ions and metallic copper. For the purpose of comparison, flowsheets were also developed for the Arbiter and Cymet processes.Process economics are estimated for the four processes and the results are discussed in relation to competitive pyrometallurgy. None of the four hydrometallurgical processes, with possible exception of the Cymet process, appears to be competitive with established large scale and newly developed pyrometallurgical processes for chalcopyrite.However, because the economics of the individual hydrometallurgical processes depend strongly on specific conditions, a "tailored" process may be competitive with pyrometallurgy in particular circumstances.

Long-range projection of demand for domestic crude oil indicates a continued upward movement and accentuates the need for increasing the recovery from known crude-oil resources to supplement expected future discoveries. Consequently, the industry and Government have given special attention to the viscous or heavy-oil deposits because they offer the distinct possibility of large order increases in ultimate recovery. This report presents data pertaining to 150 heavy-oil reservoirs in Arkansas including oil characteristics of samples from 38 of these reservoirs. To January 1, 1967, about 600 million bbl of heavy oil has been recovered from the 150 reservoirs in 63 oilfields; however, about 4.5 billion bbl, or 88 pct, of oil remained in the ground. Of prime importance is that much of this heavy-oil resource is in reservoirs having characteristics considered favorable for thermal-recovery operations. Data for the thermal projects initiated [thus Ear are presented in individual field discussions. Also discussed is the t crude oil supply-demand situation in the State.

The following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. 'The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which mag stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. 'The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. Inasmuch as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a com-pressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Although these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. El yacimiento de Zafranal —proyecto de pórfidos de cobre y oro ubicado en la región Arequipa, Perú— en sí mismo ha penetrado en lo que parece ser un salto dextral sobre una estructura del SFIC. A nivel de yacimiento, se ha mapeado una serie de fallas pronunciadas WNW en la zona mineralizada principal, consistentes con la transtensión dextral inferida. Esta estructura de fallas se trazó en 3-D a partir de las zonas de gubias identificadas en la fotografía de testigos, método que permitió elaborar un modelo estructural de forma rápida y con consistencia interna. La cinemática de las vetas y los patrones de afloramiento trazados generalmente coinciden con las estructuras interpretadas. El movimiento dextral inferido en el SFIC en el Cretácico Superior es consistente con un vector de convergencia de placas hacia el norte, y puede ser utilizado para identificar targets estructurales para sistemas de edad similar, tanto en el piamonte como en la cordillera.

The uppermost subsoil profiles of the Bangkok plain can be divided into four layers, namely: weathered clay, soft clay, stiff clay, and dense sand layers. The soft Bangkok clay is a normally consolidated marine clay with built-up preconsolidation effects and overlain by a weathered crust. Up to the present, a large number of full-scale tests on excavations and pile foundations has been made by numerous investigators. Based on these results, the available data are reviewed and evaluated. The results show that for test excavations, the excess pore pressures were overpredicted by the existing theories. The vertical and lateral movements in the excavations can be predicted by the bilinear and non-linear finite elements using appropriate modulus values. Relationships among probability of failure, safety factor, and safety margin of the excavation were also obtained. In the case of pile foundations, good agreement between the measured and predicted ultimate pile capacities were obtained for long piles. The adhesion factors ranged from 0.4 to 1.0 while the average skin friction factor was found to be 0.33. The ultimate capacity of the pile was also predicted successfully by using the Dutch cone data. For lateral deflection of piles, Davisson and Gill's theory predicted well in the low deflection zone while Poulos' theory agreed well in the high deflection zone. From the probabilistic analysis of ultimate pile capacity, the probability of failure was related to the central factor of safety. The Bayswater seam of the Singleton Coal Measures is discussed in relation to its field occurrence and related li~hotype profiles. The seam is correlated throughout widely separated areas of the Hunter Valley with the Farrells Creek seam at Howick, Broke seam at Broke, and Saddlers Creek seam at Mt. Arthur. The unusual features of composition of the seam in relation to adjacent seams is dealt with in terms of the seam environment, particular attention being given to the sandstone at the base of .the seam. Petrographic and other data are used to support the arguments submitted.

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts of fine bulky materials (<3 mm). These wastes are mostly given to specialized landfill sites. Starting out from classical and traditional beneficiation processes a new research project was initiated to work on certain new ways to efficiently separate plastic material mixes. First basic results show that the use of new and improved thermal beneficiation methods is a great implementation in the field of plastics separation. The results can be further increased by a suitable combination with other methods as well. This leads to high-quality and almost pure separated plastics and rubber products, easy to sell on recycling product markets.

Despite the fact that mined minerals and gemstones have allowed human beings to continuously improve their standard of living throughout the ages, mining has also been implicated in violent conflict for two principle reasons. The first is that mineral resources have been used or traded to conduct or finance violent conflict from small to large scales. The second is the substantial social, economic and environmental changes that occur in a community or a region as a result of mining activity which can either precipitate or re-awaken latent conflict. A modern complication of mining-related violent conflict is the trend for activists, international NGOs and intergovernmental organisations (e.g. the United Nations) to regard any human consequences of resource extraction in terms of Human Rights violations. Acknowledging but not labouring the Human Rights implications of mining-related violent conflict, this paper explores whether or not there is a relationship between the actual or perceived value of mineral resources and the level of violence that occurs in mining-related conflicts. Key to the investigation is a mapping exercise of mining related conflict from 2005 ? 2012: to see where mining related conflict is happening; to identify precipitant causes of mining related conflict; and, to discover what correlation ? if any ? there might be in the degree of violence and the value of the mineral(s) implicated. Findings of the analysis are presented in this conference paper.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential availability of chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite asbestos from 42 properties in market economy countries. This resulted in the development of tonnage-cost relationships indicating the quantity of grades 3 through 7 asbestos at various average total costs of production at 0% and 15% rates of return on invested capital. The availability of grades 2 and 8 was also evaluated, but since each is produced at only one property, no analytical results were given. Total demonstrated recoverable chrysotile fiber potentially available of grades 3 through 7 from the 42 properties evaluated follow: 1.59 million t, 21.00 million t, 16.74 million t, 15.54 million t, and 19.27 million t, respectively. The total amount of crocidolite is 1.69 million t. Owing to the good potential for discovery and development of new deposits, long- term availability of fiber of all three types is not in jeopardy. However, many of the crocidolite properties evaluated in the northern Cape crocidolite field of South Africa have relatively small demonstrated resources, and new deposits will have to be exploited by the late 1990&apos;s to sustain projected levels of production.

MANY fields have been zoned by nature with shales and intermediate waters between oil zones. Limitations thus imposed have been the basis on which the field was developed. In contrast thereto, in the Ventura Avenue Field, nature proved more generous. Always expecting to find such similar limitations, operators drilled deeper and deeper into the oil zone without finding any distinctive shale bodies other that the Gosnell shale and only one intermediate water, which became the point below which the final water shut-off of each well was made. Thus, on top of the structure, about 3300 ft. of oil-bearing zone has been penetrated below this intermediate w9ter-a distance of 4000 ft. below the Gosnell shale. Beneficiation of magnetite is an integral part of the future of iron ore processing. Historically, the focus of Western Australian producers has been on exporting direct shipping ore (DSO) namely haematite. The future for new DSO resources is limited so companies are changing their emphasis into processing the very large, undeveloped magnetite ores in Western Australia (WA), using beneficiation to produce shippable magnetite concentrates. These magnetite resources require higher cost processing techniques such as fine grinding and beneficiation to produce saleable concentrates. This distinct difference, from the DSO ores, has led to the development of a number of new technologies. This paper reviews: the different techniques used for magnetite beneficiation and provides some case studies in the WA industry; the use of mineral liberation analysis (MLA) to describe the nature, grain size, occurrence and associations of the mineralisation;the consideration of coarse cobbing as a critical upgrading; the application of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) to save energy; how the field of magnetic separation has resulted in new machines with higher field strength (SLon Separators); ultra fine grinding requirements of magnetite concentrates; andthe application of reverse flotation to reduce silica in the concentrates.

Batch tests of coals and coal-derived materials were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine their effectiveness in removing organic contaminants (COD or chemical oxygen demand, comprising those organic compounds that can be chemically oxidized, and ABS or alkylbenzene sulfonate, common household detergents) from the final effluent of secondary-treated waste waters. The adsorptive capacities of flyashes, coals, including at least one sample of each rank found in this country, pretreated coals, and miscellaneous materials including commercial chars and coke, were determined and compared with that of granular activated carbon. The coals, though not as effective as activated carbon, possess an economic advantage--they are relatively inexpensive, and they can still be burned as fuel without any loss of fuel value after use in waste¬water treatment. A hvcb coal was found to be one of the best, having about one-fourth the capacity of activated carbon for COD, adsorbing about 4 percent of its weight before it became saturated. Several coals contained constituents that added to the COD content of the treated water. Thus knowledge of the performance of the coal is necessary to insure selection of a proper coal as adsorbent.

As set forth in the decision of the Trail Smelter Arbitral Tribunal, dated April 16, 1938 This Tribunal is constituted under and its powers are derived from and limited by the convention between the United States of America and the Dominion of Canada signed at Ottawa, April 15, 1935, duly ratified by the two parties and ratification exchanged at Ottawa, August 3, 1935 (hereinafter termed "the Convention") . . . The duty imposed upon the Tribunal by the Convention was to "finally decide" the following questions: (1) Whether damage caused by the Trail Smelter in the State of Washington has occurred since the first day of January 1932, and, if so, what indemnity should be paid therefor? (2) In the event of the answer to the first part of the preceding Question being in the affirmative, whether the Trail Smelter should be required to refrain from causing damage in the State of Washington in the future and, if so, to what extent? (3) In the light of the answer to the preceding Question, what measures or regime, if any, should be adopted or maintained by the Trail Smelter? (4) What indemnity or compensation, if any, should be paid on account of any decision or decisions rendered by the Tribunal pursuant to the next two preceding Questions? This two volume report addresses slope stability of surface mine spoils within the Interior Coal Province. Sixteen (16) mines were visited, pertinent data and samples collected, and reported spoil instabilities back-analyzed. Laboratory test results are compared to back-analyzed material properties. Available methods of slope stability analysis are reviewed and evaluated with respect to application to mine spoil stability evaluation and prediction. Correlation and tentative relationships among spoil material properties, highwall conditions, mining equipment and procedures and empirical observations are presented. Slope stability sensitivity plots illustrate the relative significance of various input parameters on stability. Slope stability input parameters are correlated with site and mining conditions to identify the primary factors controlling spoil stability. Investigative methods, spoil stability enhancement techniques, spoil stability prediction procedures and future study areas are discussed. Appendices include a glossary of terms, annotated bibliography, details of mine visits, and detailed laboratory test procedures and results.
