Gasoline has become of such commercial and military importance that it is now practically indispensable. This product is of special interest because, in addition to realizing its value, the Nation is learn- ing that the raw materials from which gasoline is obtained are not unlimited. ACTIVITIES OF THE BUREAU OF MINES IN PROMOTING EFFICIENCY IN THE PRODUCTION AND UTILIZATION OF GASOLINE. The Bureau of Mines has directly and indirectly worked for the conservation and efficient utilization of this important product. Some of the bureau's activities have been along lines widely different from those reported in this bulletin. The work of the bureau toward the increase in efficiency of processes for the production and refining of crude oil is too well known to need mention here. Another line of activity in which the bureau has engaged is the collection and publi- cation of statistics on refinery operations. Finally, as immediate preparation for the present bulletin, two surveys of the gasoline mar- keting situation have been made. The primary object of this bul- letin is to make available to the public information obtained in con- nection with these surveys. PURPOSE OF THE GASOLINE SURVEYS OF 1917 AND 1919. Shortly after the United States declared war on Germany the bureau collected gasoline samples in the retail market throughout various parts of the country. Information regarding the sources of these gasolines and the details of marketing them was obtained, and they were subjected to analytical tests which furnished conclusive informa- tion regarding their properties. The information obtained through this survey proved of inestimable value both to the bureau and the United States Fuel Administration, particularly in drawing up speci- fications and in ascertaining the best means of obtaining supplies of particular types of gasoline that were needed. A similar and more extensive survey was made in the months of April and May, 1919, in order to obtain data needed for the revision of the Federal motor gasoline specification. The specification adopted during the war had been the subject of numerous complaints, and it seemed desirable to determine whether or not these objections were valid before attempting revision.

The lignite deposits of the United States represent a huge potential source of fuel for power generation. It has been estimated that lignite constitutes about 24 percent of the remaining National reserves of solid fuel on a tonnage basis and about 15 percent of the reserves on a B.t.u. basis. (See sec. 3, part 1.) The major portion of these reserves is in North Dakota. Lignite has been used locally for domestic heating since the first settlers burned it at forts and fur-trading posts as early as 1855. Some of the first studies of the use of lignite in steam boilers were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines from 1910 to 1920 (15, 19) 1/ However, the commercial utilization of lignite as fuel for producing power developed slowly. Not until about 1925 was any really successful lignite industrial fuel-blaming equipment developed. Since then the commercial use of lignite as a fuel for producing power has been increasing steadily.

The Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior is increasingly concerned with the safety and health of personnel engaged in coal-mining operations, particularly below ground. The Bureau is also concerned with improving the utilization of domestic mineral resources, and reducing the environmental impact of mineral operations. One obvious way to improve safety and minimize health hazards would be to eliminate coal mining entirely by bringing the energy value of the coal to the surface in some other way, such as by partially burning it underground to form combustible gases and bringing these gases to the surface, where their energy content can be put to use. This technique might also improve the utilization of the coal resource. ? Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines, interested in re-evaluating underground coal gasification technology in terms of current and expected conditions in the United States, requested Arthur D. Little, Inc., (ADL) to appraise the technology to determine: ? Whether the current (1971) state of the technology offers a technically feasible method for gasifying coal underground that is applicable to the reserves of bituminous and lower rank coals in the United States. ? Whether a program of research and further development of the technology could ultimately make it a technically feasible alternative to current open-pit and underground coal mining operations. ? What the nature and cost of further research and development work in the technology should be.

The objectives of the Continuous Shaft Lining (CSL) System are to reduce the costs, safety hazards, and time currently required in lining mine shafts with concrete. The CSL will line machine bored shafts downward from the shaft collar on a continuous basis using an inverted, pressurized slipforming technique. The technique for slip-forming downwards has been demonstrated and refined under this program. The approach taken involved laboratory scale testing of key features of the CSL concept. These feature tests included concrete distribution, concrete sealing, concrete slipforming and development of a reliable concrete mix. Based on these results, a full scale above-ground test facility and CSL were designed and fabricated. The objectives of these tests were to demonstrate the viability of the basic concept; to establish operating limits; and to provide input data and information for the design of a second generation shaft lining system. The results of the program have led to a CSL design and operational philosophy which will need to be tested in an underground environment before industry will accept the technology. However, the next generation CSL promises to meet all the original program technical objectives.

Real output expanded at a 3.0% rate worldwide in 1987, a slightly lower pace than the 3.2% rate in 1986. The decline was accounted for largely by slower growth in the U.S.S.R. and the East European countries, as well as in the developing countries (table 1). According to the International Monetary Fund, output of industrial countries output grew 3.1% and rose most strongly in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada (table 2). U.S. economic growth remained at 2.9%, the same as in 1986. Consumer and government spending declined in industrial countries, while gross fixed investment: rent increased. This increase in fixed investment expenditures could be attributed partly to lagged results of some 1986 developments: the fall in oil prices, declining interest rates, and exchange rate changes. The U.S. budget deficit, as well as the large external deficits and surpluses among major industrial countries, hindered further growth .2 A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicates that the impact of the October stock market crash was short-lived because it hit economies that were growing strongly, anyway.3 The growth of output in the developing countries slowed in 1987; however, output declined in the fuel-exporting developing countries. These countries have been adversely affected by weakness in oil prices and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The weighted average of inflation rates in industrial countries--as measured by the [ ] GNP deflator, was 2.9% in 1987, down from 3.4% in 1986. Prices rose 3.0% in the United States, up from 2.6% the previous year. Inflation for 1988 is expected to remain slightly higher in the United States than in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany because of recent exchange rates changes and the elimination of slack productive capacity and labor in the U.S. economy. The mining industry of the United States has-long been severely criticized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, net only as compared with other major industries-in the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries particularly Europe. Statistics (often not of strictly comparable nature) indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These figures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in. the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. This picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that. on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar types of mines in Europe, particularly England and Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. However, these foreign accident statistics should be carefully analyzed before we become very mush concerned about them, because they are clot strictly comparable owing to several considerations, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions axe definitely dissimilar to ours in many if not most phases, and numerous ether factors affect the comparability of foreign mine-accident statistics with ours. Unquestionably it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 130,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United. States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, throe, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favorable mine-accident rates than those of the United States. Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity- rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little mere, favorable than the comparable figures in the United States, namely, that mining-has an accident-severity rate about seven times that of the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

"INTRODUCTION During the first phases of the war emergency the shortage of aluminum prompoted the Bureau of Mines to investigate methods for using low-grade bauxites of high silica content and also clays as raw-material sources of this strategic metal. The Bayer process treats low-silica bauxites to provide the industry with a major portion of the purified alumina, which contains very low percentages of silica and other impurities. One of the methods investigated in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for low-grade materials is the lime-soda sinter process, which was studied on a pilot-plant scale. In this process, the alumina content of the alumina-bearing minerals Bs made water-soluble by sintering the raw material with limestone and soda. Simultaneously, the siliceous material is rendered insoluble. The sinter is extracted with an alkaline liquor, and the resulting extract liquor is treated as follows to recover the alumina: (1) Autoclaving with lime to remove silica as a zeolitic complex and (2) treatment with CO2 to precipitate alumina as the trihydrate (A1203.3H20). Figure 1 is schematic flow sheet of this process.As the process is cyclic, it is necessary that nearly all of the soda and alumina remaining in the plant liquors after carbonation be recovered. Upon passing through one cycle, these liquors contain 14 to 15 percent NaCO3 2 to 5 percent NaOH, 1 to 3 percent A1203, minor amounts of silica, and, with certain materials such as Pennsylvania diasporic clays, 0.5 to 1.0 percent Na2S04. Approximately 50 percent of the Na20 in these liquors must be returned, as soda ash, to the dry-grinding and raw-materials blending operations. Previous work (6)5/ on sulfate-free solutions demonstrated that two methods for recovering Na20 were feasible, namely: (1) Salting out Na2C03.H20 by evaporation of the carbonated solutions and (2) crystallizing Na2C03.10H20 by cooling the concentrated carbonated solutions."

This is one of a series of reports describing investigations made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines, Minerals Division, Region II. The primary purpose of these investigations is to provide basic information to agencies of the Department of the Interior and other agencies concerned with the planning of power and other water developments in the Missouri River Basin. This report contains only such factual data as have been authorized for public distribution. Special precautions have been taken not to reveal any information or data considered to be confidential. The field investigations for this report were made during the fall of 1948 and the summer of 1949. Virtually all of the known metallic mineral deposits and some nonmetallic (industrial) mineral deposits within Judith Basin County were investigated. Most of the mines and prospects have been inactive for many years; most of the old underground mine workings now are inaccessible or only partly accessible. Consequently, much of the information on many of the mines and prospects necessarily has been obtained from available U. S. Government and State publications and from owners and local residents.

Modern mining consistently faces controversy. Public sentiment impacts the permitting and development of mines, so a quality public relations (PR) program for mining companies may improve society’s impression of the mining industry. Developing mines face more permitting challenges than operating mines, which stems from a lack of societal trust given the history of mining and its impact on the environment. Two case studies were selected based on the type of public controversy they face to demonstrate how pervasive permitting issues are in industry. Both Pebble Mine, owned by Northern Dynasty Minerals (NDM), and Black Butte, owned by Sandfire Resources America Inc (SRA), experienced difficulties with their water permitting due to potential risks their mine developments posed to local fish populations. Pebble has, to date, failed in all of their attempts to become permitted due to concern for the water and the fish. Black Butte dealt with the same problems, on a smaller scale, but was able to become permitted. These two mines will be discussed in detail including local history, mine setting, mining history in America, prevalent culture groups, technology development, and intercultural communication competence (ICC). The mining industry needs to evaluate its ICC skills since ICC directly determines the effectiveness of PR. Based on Barna’s Stumbling Blocks for intercultural communication, methods for improving the mining industry’s PR will be suggested in the hope of easing the permitting process for future mines by developing ICC.

THE solid nonmetallic inclusions present to some extent in all commercial steels have been variously designated. In early references they were usually called slag inclusions, and this terminology is still retained to some extent. On the premise that all nonmetallic matter produced in a metallurgical process is slag, this can be justified. We have come to think of slag, however, in a more restricted sense, and calling these particles slag inclusions is further objectionable because it fosters the erroneous concept that they are actually incorporated portions of furnace slag. Rarely is this true. The term sonims (coined from solid nonmetallic impurities) was proposed many years ago but never came into common use. In general, the term non-metallic inclusions seems to be satisfactory and adequate. NATURE AND CONS1lTUTION OF NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS From the standpoint of origin, inclusions fall naturally into two classes: (1) those occurring as a result of reactions taking place in the body of molten or solidifying metal and (2) those resulting from mechanical incorporation of refractories or other materials with which molten steel comes in contact. The former are by far the more numerous and have been called indigenous, natural, or native inclusions. The latter are by their very nature sporadic in occurrence and have been called exogenous, accidental, adventitious, or foreign inclusions. They are often referred to as the "slag-stringer" type, though here also the material is not likely to be furnace slag. Substances Found in Inclusions. Nonmetallic inclusions are composed principally of oxides and sulfides but carbides and nitrides sometimes play an important role. In the case of indigenous inclusions the reactions by which these particles are precipitated from molten or solidifying steel may be caused by: (1) oxidation such as may occur during refining or during tapping and teeming, (2) deoxidation by added alloys, (3) change

This paper deals with concentration of hematitic-limonitic iron ores. The ore sample obtained from Karakuz (Turkey) contain:. about 40-46 I Fe. First, a low intensity magnetic separation process was employed to separate the strongly magnetic particles cf "-10+2 mm" and "-2+0.075 mm" size fractions and magnetic concentrates with 59.1 % Fe aid % 58.0 Fe were obtained respectively. The non-magnetics of both fractions were then fed to a nigh intensity permanent magnetic separator. The Fe contents of "-10+2 nun" and "2+0.075 mm" size fractions were increased from 28.2 to 51.13 and from 35.4 7. to 43.25 respectively after single pass. Easing on these results, it was concluded that the high intensity permanent magnetic separator could he used as a pre-concentrator f.7.1- hematitic-limonitic Karakuz iron ore.

The vast majority of valuations produced for mineral properties using the net present value method provide an estimate of Investment Value or Use Value. Such an estimate can be a long way from the price that the property would sell at if placed on the market. Indicators from the market need to be used to validate or modify the net present value calculation. The comparable sales and replacement cost approaches used in the appraisal of urban buildings generally fail us in the appraisal of mineral properties. Other methods of sales analysis are introduced. Guidelines for what a minerals appraisal report should contain are presented.

LIABILITY OF RAILROADS, ETC., FOR BURIAL EXPENSES.-When any railroad company, stage or any steamboat, propeller, or other vessel engaged in whole or in part in carrying passengers for hire, brings the dead body of any person into this State, or any person dies upon any railroad car or in such stage, steamboat, propeller or other vessel in this State, or any person is killed by cars, or machinery of any railroad company or by accident thereto or by accident to or upon any such stage, steamboat, propeller, or other vessel, or by accident to or in or about any mine, mill or manufactory,* the company or person owning or operating such cars, inachinery, stage, steamboat, propeller, or other vessel, mine, mill or manufactory shall be liable to pay the expenses of the coroner's inquest upon and burial of the deceased and the same may be recovered in the name of the County in any court of competent Jurisdiction. NOTE--The original Act of February 15, 1855 (Laws 1855, p. 170), makes no reference to the dead bodies of persons killed" by accident to, in or about any mine."

"From 2010, the dolomite concentration in the ore fed to the Usoke Plant increased, resulting in a significant increase in the gangue acid consumption and Mg build-up in the circuit, and thus an increase in the Mg:Co ratio in the plant solutions. This affected the Co salt grade, reagent consumption, filtration and drying capacity. Efforts were put in place to minimise the acid consumption and consequently the Mg dissolution (such as use of pre-diluted acid), but the benefits were negligible. Various efforts were then initiated by CHEMAF to improve the cobalt plant productivity (quantity and quality) by process changes, dual precipitation and seed recycle. The positive results obtained in the laboratory were successfully implemented on plant scale. A change in the process from a single-stage precipitation with Na2CO3 to dual precipitation using a combination of Na2CO3 and NaOH improved the capacity of the Co salt filtration by 30%, the Co salt grade and drying capacity by 50%, and reduced the reagent consumption by 22%. Implementation of precipitate seed recycle increased Mg rejection by 40%, improving the Co salt grade from 20% to 25%, and yielding a further drop in reagent consumption. INTRODUCTION CHEMAF (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2003. The Usoke hydrometallurgical plant treats the Cu-Co ore from the Etoile pit to produce Cu cathodes via a leach–solvent-extraction (SX)–electrowinning (EW) circuit and Co salt via a selective precipitation process. The plant was designed to treat run-of-mine (ROM) ore grading 6% Cu and 1.5% Co; but, in 2008, due to a decline in grades, a heavy-media separation (HMS) plant was commissioned to enrich the low-grade ROM (3.5% Cu and 0.5% Co) up to 8% Cu and 1% Co before feeding it to the hydrometallurgical plant. Co is recovered by precipitation of Fe and Al with limestone, followed by Co precipitation as Co carbonate using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), also known as soda ash. 85% of the final effluent from cobalt precipitation is recycled back to the plant as process water; the balance, 15%, is bled out and compensated for by fresh water top up to control and retard the rate of sodium sulfate build up."

"The wide range of length and time scales found in solidification processes are outlined and discussed. Methods for Direct Microstructure Simulation (DMS) are introduced. Key features in sharp interface and phase field models are presented. Concepts in micro-macro solidification modeling are covered. Basic details of microstructure and segregation models are provided. A description of a recent segregation micro-macro model is presented in detail.IntroductionA solidification process involves the containment of a liquid region, which, due to cooling, transforms over time to form a fully solid product. The development of the solid microstructure and the segregation of solute components during this transformation are controlled by phenomena that occur across a wide range of length and time scales. A ""successful"" model of a given solidification process needs to account for these phenomena. Standard models of solidification employ a discrete grid of node points and associated volume elements in the special domain, with a discrete time step to track the transient changes of nodal values, describing the composition and microstructure. Through the use of such models significant progress has been made towards a complete understanding of solidification process and phenomena (see the conference proceedings in Refs [1-9]). As solidification models become more sophisticated, however, they all run into the problem of resolving the full range of disparate space and time scales.Two approaches can deal with this problem1. Direct Microstructure Simulation (DMS) where the grid size and time step are chosen to scale with the smallest length and time scales of the given problem.2. Micro-macro modeling where the grid size and time step scale with the macroscopic process scale and phenomena at smaller scales are accounted for via sub-grid modeling and volume averaging.Currently full DMS of solidification is beyond the reach of available computer power and the application and development of micro-macro models is an important and critical research area."

El presente trabajo describe la realización del monitoreo de zonas revegetadas de cierre de minas utilizando técnicas de teledetección espacial. El estudio evaluó las áreas iniciales del programa de revegetación final de la minera Yanacocha. Las áreas de estudio son Maqui Maqui y San José, se localizan en la zona este de operaciones y se encuentran en cierre desde el año 200 y son restauradas dentro del programa de revegetación de áreas finales de la empresa. Como parte de la medición del éxito del programa se realiza el monitoreo de las mismas utilizando estas nuevas tecnologías. Por ello, es aplicable como parte de la conducción de los programas de revegetación de los planes de cierre de minas.

Patterns of species colonization, biochemical interaction among species, and competitive phenomena were studied in four reclaimed areas in western North Dakota ranging in age from one to four years after mining, along with a site from a native mixed grass prairie for comparison. Early successional changes in floristic composition and soil chemistry were quantified. The mined sites had been contoured, topsoiled, fertilized and seeded. Despite seeding of agronomic species, initial colonization was by fugitive species; analysis of the seed bank in topsoil showed that the most dominant colonizers immigrate after topsoiling. Of the 95 species encountered, Kuchia scoparia was the most dominant in the first two years following mining. Kochlo had relatively low densities in the first year (50-80 plants m-2), but was robust and attained heights of 88 cm with a biomass of about 400 g m-2 In the second year, the plant densities increased to over 10,000 plants m"2 but the height and biomass were reduced to 15 cm and 90 g m-2. However, during the third and fourth years Kochia density declined and was practically non-existent by the fourth year, while the planted Agropyron grasses had concomitantly increased. Other pioneers like Amaran thus retroflexus, Chenopodlum album, Helianthus annuus, Salsola spp. And Setaria spp. showed a less abrupt but similar decline. Chemical analysis of the soils over the same time period showed decreases in electrical conductivity (E.C.), and in the concentrations of P, Ca, Mg, Na, Li, Sr, and SO4 (due to leaching), while N increased. Field studies were conducted on the competitive relations between the dominant species - Kochia scoparia and Agropyron spp. - during early succession. It was found the Kochia acted as a "nurse" crop for several months during the first year of Agropyron spp. establishment, but then began to shade heavily by late July, thus reducing grass tillering. Field and growth chamber experiments on the intraspecific competition relations of Kochia demonstrated that its density and dry matter production, per plant and per unit area, conformed to several laws of plant population biology. Autotoxicity or the depression in growth of a species by its own degradation compounds, in Kochia, appears to be the main factor causing the decline in its growth. Results from a field experiment indicated that thinning dense second year Kochia stands to the density of first year stands did not alter the growth of Kochia, providing strong evidence for autotoxicity. Similarly, several growth chamber experiments demonstrated that small amounts of decaying Kochia leaves and especially roots were toxic to Kochia growth, but not Melilotus officinalis or Agropyron canlnum, Chemical analysis of the soils and plant tissues indicated nutritional im¬balances as shown by P/Mn and P/Zn ratios may be responsible for autotoxicity. In addition to Kochia, a bioassay experiment showed allelochemics to be important in several other colonizing species. Although our results indicate that later stage species generally have greater toxicities than first year colonizers, autotoxicity in the very initial stages seems to be accentuated by harsh habitat conditions. Several practices (mowing. fire, etc.) are used to manage grasslands. Mowing of the first year erect, annual, colonizing vegetation was shown to be beneficial in the growth and establishment of wheatgrasses after mining in western North Dakota. Plots containing Kochio predominantly were mowed in mid-and late-July, and in mid-August, during the first year of growth after recontouring, replacing topsoil. seeding and fertilizing. It was found the Kochia densities were reduced to two percent of the control and its biomass reduced to less than one-third when the area was mowed in mid-August. On the other hand, wheatgrasses showed increases of 23% in stem density and 860% in biomass production over the controls when mowed in mid-August. The mowing of Kochia just before seed-set apparently reduces interspecific competition between Kochia and Agropyron spp. during the following growing season. The method is highly recommended for use in hastening the establishment of planted grasses.

In view of decreasing head grades, the relatively high gold price, and recent developments in metal evaluation, an exercise was initiated to determine the extent of gold concentration, the mode of occurrence, and the areas of concentration within the run-of-mine milling circuits of Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The total gold content of three of the thirteen run-of-mine mils in the Group was measured as a typical lock-up of approximately 200 kg per mil. The majority of this gold was concentrated either behind the grid-type body liners or within the pockets of the body liners. This paper is an account of the experimental procedure and the results obtained, and highlights possible means of limiting gold lock-up in future.

Components of bulk explosive products include ammonium nitrate, water, fuel, stabilizers, and calcium nitrate. The physical attributes include prill/emulsion ratio, density, and viscosity and in the case of prilled ammonium nitrate, hardness, size distribution and fuel oil absorption. These components and attributes in conjunction with ground conditions determine all aspects of explosive performance including the risk of fume. This paper presents a fume risk assessment matrix of explosives components and physical attributes as a function of a simple description of ground conditions. Instrumentation to provide a measure of the quality of the explosive product are also described and these include both “on bench” physical measurements and laboratory analysis. “On bench” methods include “in hole “density, velocity of detonation (VOD), detonation pressure and detonation temperature. Part of the quality control process involves a mobile laboratory unit which at this stage can provide measurements of water content, ammonium nitrate content, calcium nitrate content, fuel content, prill characteristics and prill/emulsion ratio. Though the burning of fuels extends far back into antiquity, and though fuel beds are the most common and widely distributed example of chemical actions and engineering practice, there has been little attempt to group fuel beds by types or to define the principles associated with them. This paper does not profess to cover completely the subject of fuel beds. It suggests some of the over-all principles of the two more common types. No new investigational data are included, but the deductions are largely based on a recent publication of the U.S. Bureau of Mines'. Definition of Types There are three primary types of fuel beds: (I) Underfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in the same direction; (2) overfeed, in which the fuel and the air move in opposite directions; (3) crossfeed, in which the fuel and the air move at right angles to each other. The principle that fixes the type is the relation between directions of the flow of fuel and of air. Fig. 1 shows the three types diagrammatically. All other types are compounded of these three in a simple or more or less complex manner. It does not follow that these three type designations are limited to the methods used in representing them in Fig. 1; they may be turned in any direction, and as long as the relative directions of the fuel and air are the same the type is not changed. For example, A as shown .resembles a pot-type stoker, but the air and fuel can move downward as in the so-called smokeless heating boiler furnace. Also, C can be placed horizontal, as in chain-grate stokers. For this reason, the terms used to designate the three types are not all that could be desired; more logical ones could be coined, but those used probably are satisfactory until the discussion of fuel-bed types becomes more common.
